PINK DRIVE… The Pink Express offered rides from the camp ground to the Pink Night for a gold coin donation. Pictured are the two organisers, Carolyn Keep (left) and Debbie Veale with Tracey Grady the driver.
Tiny Town With A Huge Heart The recent Trundle ABBA Festival might have grabbed the headlines, but the night before an extraordinary event took place that put the town’s real heart on show. The Pink Night was not only filled with many moving stories, but raised an incredible $20,458 for women’s cancer. “We laugh a lot, and we always cry,” said Carolyn Keep, who organised the event with Debbie Veale for the fourth time this year. “It’s a night filled with emotion, compassion and determination to help in any way we can to end the loss from cancer,” said Carolyn, who was diagnosed three years ago. When Carolyn secured celebrity sports presenter Michael Cain from Channel 10 to host the night, she knew it was going to be great. Michael managed to collect some
amazing sporting memorabilia for auction with the NRL premium grand final tickets getting the highest bid of the night. A woman from Forbes, who lost her husband to cancer, bought it for $1,275. “And that’s how the night rolls - so many beautiful people all with a cancer story.” Another highlight was Janette Fry’s story about how dragon boating has become a big part of her life since surviving cancer. Carolyn could not thank her community and donors enough for the support. “We don’t ask for any donations or advertise for helpers, it just comes. Everything in the auction is dropped off leading up to the event. We had over 36 prizes and items in both raffle and auction.” Continued on page 2

Continued from page 1 The Trundle Central School’s student representative council joined in and held their very own Pink Day selling lollies and cupcakes and managed to raise $400. The school captain Harrison Williams presented the money on the night providing another “warm, fuzzy moment”. According to Carolyn the school principal also insists on printing its newsletter on pink paper every year. “Need I say any more about the true beauty of this event?” As live music played at the back of the Trundle Services and Citizens Club keeping the dance floor packed, the Pink Night has become a fun filled event for the community and ABBA fans with a five star feel good rating. “I feel so lucky to live in Trundle, the tiny town with the biggest heart on the planet,” said Carolyn. THUMBS UP... THUMBS DOWN
THUMBS DOWN To the motorists who think Kelly Road is a race track. Just because it’s on the outskirts of Parkes, it doesn’t give you licence to drive like maniacs. Kelly Road has a speed limit of 50km. Maybe time to consider speed humps?
THUMBS UP To everyone who remembers to take their own reusable shopping bags and not buy plastic bags.

At the Red Shield Appeal launch were at the back (L-R): Cr Pat Smith, Nicayden Greenwood, Lt Maryanne Lovering, Envoy Rosemary Richardson, Mayor Ken Keith, Lt Cameron Lovering, Robyn Hohnberg, Nyomi Pratt and Chris Symonds. In front are Cr Bill Jayet and Bill Atkins, and Nyomi’s children.
Crucial Appeal To Support Red Shield
There has been a significant increase in people coming forward needing assistance over the past 12 months. Lt Cameron Lovering of the Parkes and Forbes Salvation Army said at the launch of the annual Red Shield Appeal last weekthat they saw the effects of the drought on a daily basis. He said 80% of funds raised this year would go straight back into the local community. Parkes Mayor Ken Keith said lots of families were hurting and encouraged everyone to support the appeal. The target this year is to raise $9,000. Volunteers are needed to help out at two static points at Woolworths and Big W during the week starting 20th May, and volunteers to help the doorknock campaign on
25th and 26th May. Contact Maryanne Lovering on 0431 731 531 to offer assistance. Cameron said another way to support was to donate items to the Family Store. “The store is our primary source of income. The more donations we get, the more money we can raise.” At the launch community members, who had been offered assistance, delivered testimonials of what it had meant to them. Bill Atkins and Nyomi Pratt encouraged everyone to support “the wonderful cause”. Volunteer supervisor Robyn Hohnberg said it was such a good feeling to give back to the community. Parkes Family Store Supervisor Chris Symonds said it was wonderful to help out families in desperate need.

Reading Relay Rallies Round Australia The Perth to Pacific Book Relay rolled into Parkes, the birthplace of Paint The Town REad, to its biggest welcome yet. More than 500 children packed the Parkes Leagues Club last Friday to welcome Rhonda Brain and Barbie Bates on Day 46 of the relay. The two campaigners have travelled over 6,700km and visited 55 communities to spread the all important message of reading to your baby from birth. Rhonda said the relay had been incredibly worth it so far. “It’s been overwhelming. We’ve been so encouraged by the number of people who have caught onto the concept.” She said they had visited communities where they’ve already started and many others who are keen to start. “It is so exciting to see communities working together to get better ideas for the improvement of their kids,” said Barbie. She said in the small community of Bealiba in Victoria just about the whole town came to their event. Rhonda said they made sure that every place they visited in Western Australia, either the mayor or local member had been bitten by the reading bug. “Once you’ve been bitten you have to read books!” This is exactly what happened in Parkes when the reading bug bit Mayor Ken Keith and he read ‘We are going on a bear hunt’
with actions provided by members of the Parkes Community Choir. The event on Friday coincided with this year’s annual community reading day Paint Parkes REaD. There was lots of entertainment to make it a fun day. The Parkes Community Choir, acccompanied by Cr Neil Westcott on guitar, sang a special song ‘Books are great and fun and cool’. Neil and Cr Bill Jayet did a funny skit, Baby Bug caught up with her Mum the Reading Bug, and representatives from each school signed the Relay Book. By Maggi Barnard

LEGAL Eagle
Guarantees Given To A Bank
Guarantor loans have become prevalent in recent times as banks try to spread the liability for loans. These types of loans are usually structured in such a way that the loan is secured by both the property you are buying and the property owned by the guarantor. Here are some types of guarantees: 1. Security guarantee: First time home buyers with an excellent credit history but no deposit will use this type of guarantee. The guarantor, called an ‘equity guarantor’ by some lenders, uses real estate they own as additional security for the mortgage in question. If the guarantor has a loan on their property already, the bank can usually take a second mortgage as security. 2. Security and income guarantee: These guarantors are often parents helping their child who is a student or who has insufficient income to buy a property. The lender will use the parents’ property as additional security and rely on the parents’ income to prove that the loan is affordable. 3. Limited guarantee: The guarantor only guarantees a part of the loan. This is mostly used with security guarantors to reduce the potential liability secured on the guarantor’s property. Guarantees can either be limited or unlimited, depending on both the guarantor’s wants and the lender’s requirements. If you use a limited guarantee, then you are reducing the guarantor’s exposure to your mortgage although you may still be up for interest and charges by the bank in excess of the limit of the loan. Some banks require the customer to obtain independent legal advice from a solicitor. If we at Matthews Williams can help you on any legal matter, feel free to call us.

Currajong Claims Forbes Special Sports Day The Currajong Disability Services team were victorious in the 38th running of the Forbes Special Sports Day at Red Bend College earlier this month. Despite losing the marching section, Currajong rallied to take honours in the walking races, musical chairs and a dance-off. With Donna Apps, Thomas Davis and Jye Jeffrey dominating the walking races and Wade Cannon taking home the chocolates in musical chairs, it came down to the dance-off to decide the ultimate winner. Right on cue, Patty Nolan waltzed onto the dance floor and lit up the large friendly crowd at the Red Bend College Hall. Patty’s repertoire of flips, hand stands, moonwalks, foxtrots and lido shuffles stole the show in front of an enthusiastic gathering. Yet more important than the winning was the fact that everyone had a tremendous time at this iconic event. The Forbes Special Sports Day brought the disability community throughout the region together again for yet another outstanding event. “The day isn’t so much about who won as everyone is a winner here,” said Thomas Davis from Currajong Disability Services.
The victorious Currajong Disability Services team.
“Today is a celebration and a special day on the Forbes and disability calendar. We can’t thank everyone enough from the other providers to Red Bend for having us here today,” he said. “Can’t wait to come back next year!” If participation levels are anything to go by next year should be an even bigger spectacle going into the 40th edition in 2021. Congratulations to everyone involved for putting on a great day and participating in this flagship event. By Dane Millerd
Blake Huntly gives the thumbs up after claiming the walking race.
