IMAGE: Vicki Wilson and Parkes Mayor, Ken Keith, unveiled a tribute to Vicki’s late husband, Robert Wilson at the official opening of the Robert Wilson Terminal at Parkes Regional Airport.

Air of Grandeur in New Terminal

With a roof like the wing of an airplane and a spectacular view over the runway, the newly refurbished gateway to Parkes was officially named the Robert Wilson Terminal last Friday. It was an auspicious day with more than 100 guests and family members of the late Robert Wilson OAM filling the new terminal. “Council believes it is fitting to dedicate the Parkes Regional Airport terminal to our former Mayor Robert Wilson OAM,” said Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith OAM; “With 43 years of service in local government, 23 of which were as Mayor, he was a great mentor to many. He was the Donald Bradman of local government.” Ben Wilson, son of Robert, said the family was greatly honoured and proud to have the

new terminal dedicated to their father. “Dad did not do what he did with the hope that one day he would have something named after him. But to have something that recognizes his many years of service to the community is a wonderful gesture, and will stand as testament of his commitment.” Michael McCormack, Member of Parliament for Riverina, who opened the $3 million terminal with the Parkes Mayor, said Robert Wilson was a fighter and a truly great campaigner. Parkes Shire Councillor and Chair of the Airport Committee Alan Ward said passenger demand for services from Parkes Airport has grown from 8,000 to over 30,000 passengers a year in a ten-year period. 65% Of Child Restraints Checked Incorrectly Fitted

MAYORAL NOTES Our Shire has certainly needed gumboots and winter woollies with the significant drop in temperature and wet weather this past week. Let’s hope all this lovely rain is setting our farming community up for a bumper spring. Parkes polling for the 2016 Federal Election will commence from the 27th June at the Parkes Business Enterprise Centre. Opening hours are outlined on Council’s website or you can visit the Australian Electoral Commission website aec.gov.au for more detailed information. Parkes Shire Council is currently upgrading the Parkes Waste Facility to make it more user friendly for customers as well as to allow for increased diversion of materials from landfill. Construction is underway to improve the efficiency, safety and environmental aspects of the facility. A comprehensive tree planting program is also planned for the perimeter of the facility to screen the operations from roads and nearby residences. The construction phase is scheduled for completion at the end of August 2016. As part of the upgrade of the facility, Council will also be implementing fees and charges at the site. The fees and charges that will be applied once the new facility is operational will not be significantly different from current fees and charges. Many of the waste fees and charges have been reduced to encourage greater diversion of waste from landfill. Enjoy a happy and safe weekend. Yours Faithfully, Cr Ken Keith OAM

The free Child Restraint Checking Day held recently, a service provided by Parkes Shire Council, Col Fletcher Ford and Kia along with Parkes Tyrepower and Mechanical Repairs, discovered that 65% of the child restraints checked were incorrectly fitted. The service provided free child restraint inspections at RMS Authorised Child Restraint Fitting Stations in Parkes and 18 child restraints were brought in by parents, grandparents and carers for checking. Parkes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Logan Dolbel, said that research shows that two out of three child restraints are not being used properly and this puts children at risk of sustaining injuries if they are involved in a crash. “Most of the child restraints that were checked only had minor problems that needed fixing to ensure the safety of the child. The correct fitting and adjustment of child restraints is vital. Child restraints that are not correctly fitted put children at risk of injury in the event of a crash,” he said. The most common mistakes were related to the use of the lap sash seatbelts and the straps on the child restraint; they needed tightening, they were too tight, they were twisted or they were incorrectly anchored in the vehicle. Many of the restraints checked also needed additional parts like gated buckles to ensure the safety of the restraint and the child. “It is important to make sure that your precious cargo is safe and buckled up every

Information and advice was also available about the types of child restraints, the national laws and when to move children from one restraint to the next. SNIPPETS...

IMAGE: How do you improve a truck? Add bigger wheels

Monstrously Good! Get ready for world class monster trucks roaring their way into Parkes on 2nd July for some ultimate monster action. Parkes Showgrounds is the place as one of Australia’s most successful recording artists, Adam Brand, hosts this massive family entertainment spectacular featuring USA Monster Trucks, FMX, Jet Car, fireworks and lots of other crazy high octane stunts. No stranger to the world of Monster Trucks, Adam is excited to be heading to Parkes for this family entertainment event. Gates will open at 1.30pm with feature acts including USA Monster Trucks performing from 4.30pm concluding with a massive fireworks finale around 6.45pm. Nice Weather for Ducks: The rain has shown no sign of relenting over the past few weeks and now the ground is showing the strain, with rivers and roads flooding throughout the area. The Lachlan and Belubula rivers along with the Mandagery creek have all experienced a significant rise in levels over the week. However, at this stage both Nanami and Forbes are expected to remain below the minor flood levels. The SES would like to remind locals

never to drive, ride or walk through floodwater and to keep an eye on the updates. For emergency help in floods and storms, call the NSW SES on 132 500. Forbes Eisteddfod Fun: More than 2 000 children and adults graced the stage for the five days of the Eisteddfod. Every session had a packed Town Hall to capacity with about 200 parents in attendance. Participants not only came from Forbes but from all over the Central West and even further afield, including Grenfell, Parkes, Bathurst, Griffith and Leeton. The individual categories were open to participants of all ages. The competition started on Saturday with piano, and vocal on Sunday. On Monday the first school groups on stage in the instrumental category, while the speech and drama section was on Tuesday. The most popular category this year, school dance groups, had its turn on Wednesday. Many schools entered for this competition. Other categories for groups were for bands and school choirs. The idea for an Eisteddfod dates back to the 12th century in Wales when it was a Welsh festival of literature, music and performance. The current format comes from an 18th century revival of the Eisteddfod.

What’s been your most memorable (good or bad) flight experience?

Adele Hawke, Adele’s Salon and Skin Clinic: “I love flying and had a flying lesson once, but just don’t have time to do more. I had a bad experience was once on a flight to Los Angeles and it was really rough. The pilot announced that in his 30 years of flying he’d never experienced it that bad. The meal trolley went ‘flying’ down the aisle!”

Marcia Scally, Parkes GP: “I had a nightmare experience when my twin boys were 23 months old. Our Air France flight from Lisbon to Paris was delayed by weather and then we missed our Emirates flight to Sydney. We were left stranded and had to upgrade to business class to get a flight in three days or wait six weeks for economy seats. To make matters worse, just before the flight home Ashton accidentally slammed a door on Tomas’ thumb, severing it.”

OAM Honour For Scientist Living His Dream

A picture of the Parkes Radio Telescope on the cover of his maths textbook in Year 9 often had John Sarkissian daydreaming in class of working there one day. “At age six I was fascinated with Neil Armstrong’s landing on the moon, and by age ten I wanted to do astronomy.” One thing John, who is today Operations Scientist at the Parkes Radio Telescope, never gave any thought to was being awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM). “It came as a complete surprise!” So much so that when he received the email to inform him he was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, he immediately thought it was a prank. “I had to give it time to sink in and after a few days I felt it was an honour and would be very happy to accept it” he said. John feels strongly that he cannot lay claim to this honour in isolation but recognises the contribution of friends and colleagues over the years to his work. For John his work is his passion and joining the Parkes Radio Telescope in 1996 was a highlight. “The telescope was the first really big science project in Australia. We have made big discoveries here, and 55 years later it is still considered to be one of the best radio telescopes in the world.”

Another highlight for John was the making of the movie The Dish. “Originally we thought they were coming to make a documentary, but soon realised it was going to be a movie, in fact a comedy.” John feels the movie managed to reintroduce the Parkes Radio Telescope to a new generation and made The Dish the iconic symbol it has become. He said before the movie visitor numbers were 50,000 per year. After the movie it reached a peak of 130,000 in 2003, and has averaged out to 100,000 per year. “It has given us a platform to stand on and talk about what we do.” While the movie has focused on the moon landing, and “so many of us have dreamed about being an astronaut”, John said he soon realised that problem solving behind the scenes was much more rewarding. “It is like a hunter and his prey. Once you have caught your prey (solved a problem), it is a really good feeling.” John has met many astronauts, including his childhood hero, Neil Armstrong. He said Neil stood out from the rest. A prize possession of John is a framed copy of an email from Neil in recognition of his work to recover the tapes of the Apollo 11 mission.

For the Year 5 student who had to search the library to find out what NASA stood for, and today has an office with a beautiful view of the Parkes Radio Telescope, his dream for the future is to keep the telescope going and use it as a productive instrument as “you never know what you might find”.

My House My Home Be A Fire Starter With Parkes Landscaping

Cutting Edge Design To me when I think of cutting edge design it conjures up images of a sleek and so-phisticated look that pushes the boundaries of design and style to a new level. It sets you apart from the rest and perhaps creates a space that has you featuring in your home the latest trends and choices available in the marketplace that may have not been fully adopted by the majority of the general public yet due to their newness in the world of design. It is a constantly changing world with advances in products, building materials and styling finishes happening so often that it takes a keen student to stay in touch with these changes and to embrace them within their own home. I like to think of this approach to design and to including advancements into my work to make my life and my client’s life easier throughout our design process. Make a style file or Moodboard when you start the process of beginning to style your home and at that point collect all the information about what products are available and how you would like to incorporate them into your design. This allows you to do all your research and evaluation early in the project and you will save valuable time in the long run as when the contractors need speedy decisions you will be ready to go. So here are my favourite ways to incorporate great design into your world: • Adopting a minimalistic approach to your design will always give you an amazing result that has cutting edge design all over it. • Introducing different building materials into your mix will give a designer edge to your final style. • Metallic finishes scream designer chic at the moment. • Incorporating a true eco friendly element to your home’s design is a must in making your home cutting edge in design and proactive in saving the impact we have on the environment. • Embrace the theory that true cutting edge design allows us to incorporate old with new seamlessly. Decorating and styling your home can really give you an opportunity to express your own inner style in a really tactile way. And I think true cutting edge design is discovering and combining the things that you treasure into a home that you absolutely love.

If you have a wood burner or stove in your house, you’ve probably started the perfect fire only to find it’s completely burned out a few minutes later. A few methods to burn wood efficiently can help you get a roaring fire crackling and keep you warm this winter. It’s essential that your wood heater is cleaned, particularly the flu that draws smoke form the fire. Pay close attention to the wood you burn too, there’s no point carefully stacking logs if they’re wet, green or rotted! Therefore it’s important to also have the right materials. A combination of softwood and hardwood kindling and firelighters will provide your base. Conventional wisdom suggests you start burning underneath your logs however there’s good evidence that you should build your fire from the top down layering smaller pieces on top of a base made layer. This way, the fire grows hotter and hotter, gradually working down to consume the wood. When being a fire starter many things can go wrong such as insufficiently seasoned wood that has been dampened by snow or rain. This sort of wood will keep on smoking until it becomes charcoal. Even good wood can be arranged so a fire never reaches its full potential so make sure you have the basics to get your fire started today with wood and kindling now in stock at Parkes Landscaping Supplies at Lot 1 Back Trundle Road.

My House My Home What Makes a Splashback? Glass splashbacks are a sure way to enhance the appearance of your new kitchen layout. And not only do they look great, splashbacks also make the job of cleaning in the kitchen heaps easier and much faster. When the staff at Glassplace measure a kitchen for a new splashback, we check the size of cupboards, benches, work areas and windows. Most splashbacks are made from Low Iron toughened 6mm glass or from special mirrored glass. It’s toughened to handle the heat from the cooktop. And we use low iron glass because ordinary glass has a very slight green tint, which is not noticeable until it is painted, but it can slightly change the appearance of the splashback when installed, especially if using light or white colours. The colour choice is totally yours. Some customers want a very plain colour to blend in with walls and cupboards, while others like to have a bold colour to enhance the look of their new kitchen. So after we have the size and shape of the splashback pieces confirmed, it’s up to our glass supplier to cut the pieces to size and shape, polish the edges, do cut outs for power points and then toughen each piece in a furnace. When the glass has cooled it goes through a chemical wash, gets dried and has 3 coats of paint applied on the back surface. When the glass comes to our workshop we unwrap it, check it for size and imperfections. Then we take it to your place and carefully fit each piece and seal it all to the wall with a sanitary grade silicone. That’s it – finished! That’s when you get to see what you have planned and dreamed of for a few weeks and show your friends and neighbours and enjoy what is often the focal point of your new kitchen. Call Glassplace on 6862 2346 and we can advise, measure and quote a glass splashback for you. By Col Lamrock

Bathurst Winter Festival

IMAGE: Ruby Wilson meets Michael McCormack, MP for Riverina in Parkes last week with her grandmother, Vicki Wilson looking on.

Following In Grandad’s Footsteps

Ruby Wilson is a seven-year-old with a mission: she wants to save the Great Barrier Reef! Last Friday she took the opportunity to present a poster she has made of the Reef to Michael McCormack, Member of Parliament for Riverina and Assistant Minister for Defence. When the year 2 student from Parkes Public School heard there was going to be an MP at the opening of the Robert Wilson Terminal in honour of her grandfather, she decided it was time to take some action. She started drawing the reef with her favourite animals, sea turtles. At the opening of the new terminal at the Parkes Regional Airport she spoke to Michael McCormack, who was happy to accept her poster and listen to her concern. Ruby’s mum, Angela, said her daughter definitely had inherited her drive and motivation from her grandfather. Robert Wilson was the Mayor of Parkes for 23 years and

was widely known for his commitment to the community. For children who would like to speak up for the Great Barrier Reef, there is a website of The Kids’ Party offering a new, fun way for young people to protect the magical Reef and the rest of the planet by talking to Australia’s leaders. “You might have heard there is an election coming up. You might not be old enough to vote yet, but that doesn’t mean you have to be quiet. If enough kids speak up, the grown-ups will listen!” You can get involved by creating artwork, poems, photos, songs, videos, animations or anything to ask politicians to do more to save the Reef and our environment. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system stretching over 2,300 km. It is located off the coast of Queensland and can be seen from space. By Maggi Barnard

Bathurst Youth Council will also run the YJam stage, featuring local young performers and local food and wine will be on offer. On Saturday 9th July ‘Brew and Bite’ will get underway from 4pm. The evening will again offer a range of food and entertainment for everyone including food trucks and regional brewers. There will be an ice hockey exhibition and market stalls featuring, selling winter woollies, jewellery, candles and clothing and the popular silent disco will return to Court House. Sounds, brr-illiant!

Forbes locals may have been wondering where The Party Shop has gone after a distinct lack of party shopping in the town… Well, wonder no more! Lin is back in brand new premises at Shop 6, Forbes Arcade, 113 Rankin Street in Forbes. But rather than continue with the Party Shop Lin now wants to concentrate on her love of sewing, and has decided that the time is right for her to sell all her party wear, costumes and accessories. “I’m offering a massive 30% off all stock so come in and get it before it’s gone!” said Lin. Her new business will now be called Linny A’s Sewing and Alterations. Lin will be available for all your sewing needs and those hard to do alterations in time for you to wear your gorgeous new outfit. If you need something done in a hurry, then Lin is the lady to see. Lin is at the shop from 9.30am to 3pm each day from Monday to Friday. Pop in and make the most of the great reductions on party products and get that unravelling jumper and holey sock darned while you’re there!

Anti-Virus software is essential for your computer. With different types of software and brands, it can be a bit of a minefield when choosing the right one for you. A quick search and you find many brands trying to get your money. Plus, you have the wide range of free versions that can do almost nothing, and can slow your computer down. There are some that make it very hard to remove their software if you change your mind. My recommendation is TrendMicro, which is available for different needs, such as PC, Android and IOS. The biggest thing to remember with all antivirus software, there is always a delay between finding new viruses and an update to fix it. So remember, when you’re online, make sure your antivirus is up-to-date and be careful searching the web as viruses can be anywhere.

Shop + Win In Parkes! An exciting new promotion launching in Parkes this June could be your ticket to an amazing holiday. Parkes Shire Council is excited to announce the ‘Shop + Win’ campaign for June and July to drive visitation and spend to local businesses. Customers will be given the chance to win a Royal Caribbean Cruise, simply by shopping in Parkes at any participating store until Saturday 16th July. Parkes Shire Council’s Brand and Marketing Manager, Katrina Dwyer, says; “The local shop and win campaign is an initiative designed to create destination awareness and increase spending in our local Parkes CBD. The campaign is designed to be simple and

flexible allowing all types of businesses to participate, which will reinforce to consumers that it all adds up in Parkes for quality shopping, cafes, accommodation and services.” Ms Dwyer went on to say, “Parkes boasts a dynamic calendar of events and promotions that traditionally fall seasonally in the warmer months of year. Following on from a very successful Christmas Shop Local Sparkles campaign in December, a winter shop local campaign was identified as an effective way to support local businesses.” The campaign’s prize incentive to consumers has been donated by We Know Travel in Parkes, a fabulous 8-night cruise

for two people sailing the beautiful Coral Sea to New Caledonia, Mystery Island and Lifou in February 2017. “With the generous support of We Know Travel Parkes, this is a great incentive to entice people to shop in Parkes during the local shop and win campaign. It also provides the ideal opportunity to capture qualitative and quantitative visitor data to enable more targeted marketing activity in the future” Katrina Dwyer explained. So, how do you enter? Simply look out for the posters in participating shop windows, or go to the special offers page at visitparkes.com.au for a full list of participating stores.

Introducing the Parkes Library Book Club…

IMAGE: Uncle Ralphy Naden welcoming Pastor Bill Mei and the Te Raranga Whanui group to Wiradjuri Country

Bulgandramine Festival Success Despite Weather! The Back to Bugandramine Cultural Festival held at Peak Hill was moved to the Koinonia Hall due to the threat of significant rainfall over the weekend. The rain held off on Saturday and a perfect winter’s day set the scene for the opening of the festival. The festival was originally planned for the grounds at the previous aboriginal mission site known as Bulgandramine where over 1,000 Aboriginal people lived and raised their families until the mission was closed. The weekend was opened with a smoking ceremony, acknowledgement of Elders, past and present, a welcome to visitors and the Maori group, Te Raranga Whanui who travelled from Sydney to be at the Festival. Te Raranga Whanui were represented by Pastor Bill Mei in an acceptance and the group responded to the welcome sharing their beautiful harmonies in song. Visitors were welcomed to the Shire by Councillor Ken Keith and the Wiradjuri performers escorted Cr Keith to the stage to show him some traditional dances which he happily joined in! After the welcome, kids enjoyed activities including face paint-

ing, jumping castle, craft and weaving with a special guest from Sydney, Kirri Morcombe. Rodney Powell entertained the crowds, while lunch was prepared by Bernie Peri and Te Raranga Whanui put on their main performance for the weekend. After lunch, Larry Brandy spoke about Aboriginal tools and clothes and local band Riff Raff performed during the evening. On Sunday everyone joined at the Koinonia Hall to finish off the weekends festivities with a church service as the rain came down outside. The community was fortunate to have Pastor Mark Naden talk about growing up in Peak Hill and how he came to be a preacher and he was joined by Pastor Tom Sloan and his wife Stella to lead the singing. The Parkes Fijian Group and Te Raranga Whanui performed filling the building with fabulous music. Thank you to the many sponsors, volunteers, guests and the Peak Hill community for providing such a wonderful event. By Marg Applebee

On Thursday 30th June Parkes Library will end the financial year with a bang! At 6pm it will host the inaugural meeting of its first every community book club. According to Manager Cultural, Education & Library Services, Shellie Buckle, the formation of a library book club has been a while in the planning. “Early 2016 the Parkes Library team invited the community to give feedback on what services customers and members would like the Library to introduce. High on the list was a book club. We carried out further research to find out when people would like the book club to be held, what things they would like to read and how often the club should meet” said Shellie. When the results were tallied it was decided to hold the meetings monthly, in the evening, on the last Thursday of the month. The first book being read by club members is ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. “Hornsby Library is kindly supporting the book club by loaning us book club kits, multiple copies of the same title” said Librarian Gillian Hunt, coordinator of the book club. Book clubs run on a simple formula: gather people, pick a book, read it and get together to discuss! If you are interested in joining the club, please call Parkes Library on 6861 2309 and register your interest.

PARKES SPORT each other as they would like to be treated themselves. The red belt is of special significance as these students are beginning to work through the ranking system of karate, it signifies their confidence, courage and commitment that they have shown in trying something new and sticking to it; working through a belt ranking system gives the student measurable goals to follow that are realistic to attain and increases their own self-belief and confidence. The sense of self-confidence and accomplishment the student feels when mastering a new technique or graduating to a new belt will follow them wherever they go.

PARKES KARATE MEMBERS PASS GRADING WITH FLYING COLOURS

Central West Kyokushin Karate Club painted the Parkes Dojo Red earlier this month when they held their first ever grading for the club. 26 students (21 juniors and 5 seniors) completed the grading on Thursday 2nd June. Tested in the presence of family and friends everyone was trying their best with all students performing outstandingly to successfully pass their grading. Most students who begin karate are nervous to start; am I fit enough? Will I get hurt? Will I embarrass myself? However, these students pushed past their doubts to discover that Karate is not only an opportunity to get fit and learn to defend yourself but it is also an opportunity to develop a wide range of life skills in a fun and safe environment that will be useful throughout their entire life. The students that participated in the grading have worked hard and put in many hours of practice to qualify to be tested for their belt and Sensei Michelle Kable was proud to see all students pushing them-

selves during their test; “A great effort and attitude was demonstrated by all students throughout their grading, it’s fantastic to see how much they have achieved so far this year, and I would like to congratulate each and every one of them on their commitment to Karate and their determination to do their very best throughout this semester, everyone did exceptionally well” she said. Kyokushin Karate is a fun and challenging martial art that gives children a jumpstart in life by providing them with practical and usable life skills from a very early age. Some of the benefits for anyone participating in karate include self-discipline; martial arts help instil mental focus– by learning how to develop concentration and complete tasks, the discipline taught in the dojo in regards to uniforms, customs, and techniques often transfers into other areas of life including school, work and home. Karate is also all about respect; punching, kicking and sparring are all secondary to the respect that is established from the moment a student walks into a dojo. Children learn to treat themselves, their parents, family, instructors and teachers and their fellow students with respect - to treat
