Top Squash Players In Parkes

The Parkes and Forbes Squash Clubs are making history this weekend by hosting the first ever NSW Junior State Age Squash Championships to be held in a regional centre. To make the event even more spectacular, it will be one of only two gold ranked events to be held in the State this year, which means top players from around Australia will be competing because of the ranking points on offer. About 100 players will be in action, including 12 players from Parkes and four from Forbes competing in divisions from under 11 through to under 19 for both girls and boys. The Parkes players are Ned Hunter (under 19’s), Liam Pope and Chester Kelly (17’s), Brenden Trim (15’s), Lockie Miller (13’s), Henry Kross (11’s), Jolie O’Shannessy and Naomi Kent (17’s), Bronte O’Shannessy and Kacey Nightingale (15’s), Marley O’Shannessy (13’s) and

Hana Kim (11’s). The Parkes and Forbes Clubs have had some fantastic local support, with Parkes Services Club going above and beyond to make the event a success and ensure the facilities are top class. All four courts in Parkes have been renovated in the past six months, with a complete renewal of front walls, floors sanded and the entire centre painted. Western Road Liners are offering bus services between the two centres for the tournament. Parkes Diagnostic is a major local sponsor, with three local motels, All Settlers, Henry Parkes and the Astro Dish. Parkes Shire Council and Northparkes Mines have been generous in lending marquees, temporary fencing and other items to extend the Squash Centre into the car park to house the large expectant crowd. MAYORAL NOTES The Australian Federal Election was held on Saturday 2 July with Riverina voters returning Nationals MP Michael McCormack for a third successive term in Parliament. We congratulate Mr McCormack and look forward to working with him to foster development and growth now that the Parkes Shire is part of the Riverina electorate. Congratulations to local Parkes athlete Mariah Williams who will realise her Olympic dream after being selected in the Australian Women’s Hockeyroo’s team for 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Mariah will be Parkes’ second hockey Olympic (player) representative and Parkes’ first ever female hockey Olympian. Parkes Hockey will have a strong representation at the Rio Games with Stephen Davies and Ben Bishop appointed as Assistant Coach of the Hockeyroo’s and Kookaburra’s respectively. Parkes will have four representatives at the Games, including Scott Westcott who will be competing in the marathon at Rio. It is truly remarkable for a regional shire to have such a strong representation at one Olympics and is testament to the strong sporting culture of the Shire. I encourage all residents to stop by the new Council information hub in Clarinda Street at the former CBA building. The information hub provides information about events, Council’s programs and projects as well as what’s happening within the Shire. Drive carefully in the wet weather, and enjoy a happy and safe weekend. Yours Faithfully, Cr Ken Keith OAM, Mayor of Parkes Shire

To the Editor, Re Cooke Park, Parkes A number of citizens are worried about the future of Cooke Park under the new CBD plan. We feel that the plan is a very basic plan with green bits here and there, not a complete artistic representation of what the Park would really look like. Every town has a small park that is dedicated to the history of the town by commemorative areas and Cooke Park is one of these. What concerns us is that we’ve lost so many of our Heritage buildings recently. Spicer Park grandstand is to be pulled down. Is Cooke Park next? Cooke may not be demolished, but by removing it’s historical items isn’t this the same? Is the plan to rename it too? Cooke Park was named after Henry Harry Cooke an early miner who lived and mined in Currajong, he owned our first newspaper, was a Parliamentarian, friend and associate of Sir Henry Parkes, first Mayor and was involved in the first school at Currajong. The park was known as Cooke Park but wasn’t officially opened until 18th Nov. 1928. A fitting person for us to name our first public park after. The Band Rotunda was an integral part of the Park for many years, built in 1912, it was paid for by donations and used by the Parkes Town Band, Parkes borough and Peak Hill Bands were among many visiting ones to use the Band Rotunda. It was sad to see it go and not be returned. At one time the Rotary Club were going to restore it. The Swan Pond feature, including Henry Parkes’ concrete statue donated by former

The Office Dilemma

When buying a new computer, it’s important to note that Microsoft Office (that’s Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher and Access) are rarely included. There are now 2 different ways of purchasing Office. Perpetual, and subscription. The perpetual licence is a once off payment, and you then own the software to install on 1 computer. You can change computers, but cannot upgrade to the latest version without buying the software again. These versions generally do not have the

full suite of apps available to you. The subscription licence (or 365) is the full suite of office apps, and you are licensed to use them all for a year, before renewing the subscription. The great thing about 365 is that you can always have the latest version of Office by upgrading to the new version of the software during the subscription. 365 also gives you options of installing on multiple computers. Bogan Gate School’s Generosity Recognised Bogan Gate Public School has been recognised with the second highest award, a Platinum Award, from Stewart House for fund raising efforts in 2015. They were one of only ten schools across the state to receive this award. Students from Bogan Gate are now aiming for the highest award, a Diamond Award, and hope to achieve this in the next three years. Stewart House in Sydney provides a residential program for public school students. It gives children opportunities to participate in a great variety of experiences not usually available to them. As well as participating in educational programs, students are also provided with dental, optometric and medical assessments and urgent treatment. Carefully planned activities encourage and promote respect for self and others, develop positive learning behaviour and social skills as well as behaviour that supports healthy living. Students take part in constructive learning activities and experiences which include Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk, Crab Hunting, City Tour, a trip on a Sydney ferry and Taronga Zoo and Aquarium visits.

Kaylene Clark, Harvey Norman: I don’t have kids at school any more, but my four granddaughters would probably work out when I have a day off and come around. They are eight, seven, four and two years old and like to do some cooking, feeding the ducks and taking the dog for a walk.

Wrap With Love

There are millions of people in the world suffering extreme cold, so if knitting and chatting make you happy, and helping others in need gives you a warm feeling, mark Thursday, 21st July on your calendar. This is the date for this year’s annual Knit ‘n’ Natter Day organised by the Craft Corner to help as many people as possible by providing warm wraps to ward off hypothermia. The Craft Corner has been supporting the Wrap with Love program for the past eight years. Brooke Daniels from ABC Radio visits Parkes every year. The idea is to send her off with as many knitted squares and wraps as possible for delivery to the warehouse in Sydney. Rugs made from the squares are sent

around the world, including Australia. Wrap with Love was started in 1992 and in the past 23 years more than 400,000 wraps were sent to people in more than 75 countries. Craft Corner members and anyone else are encouraged to drop off their knitted squares at the Craft Corner. The squares should be 25cm square, knitted in 8 ply yarn with no. 8 (4mm) needles in garter stitch all plain rows. A completed wrap is four squares wide and seven squares down. If you have left over 8 ply yarn lying around at home, feel free to drop that off at the Craft Corner, to keep the knitters busy. Members and the wider community are invited to come and share a cuppa with Brooke at the Craft Corner in Clarinda Street from 10:30am on 21st July. By Maggi Barnard

Your Local Recruitment Service

IMAGE: The Meals on Wheels team: Fiona Graham, Gillian Kinsela and Deborah Wren.

Volunteer For Meals On Wheels

Meals on Wheels now have two new faces, Fiona Graham and Gillian Kinsela, to help ensure this vital service keeps on meeting the needs of the Parkes community. Fiona is the new service manager and Gillian has joined as an administration support to help Deborah Wren. Fiona assured all families and clients that the service would continue as normal and made a call to any new volunteers to join this organisation that is at the heart of the community in Parkes and the villages of Peak Hill, Bogan Gate, Tullamore and Trundle. Fiona recently moved back from Gundagai and is looking forward to this new experience. “I love Parkes and the community. The role brings something different every day while we make a difference in people’s lives. Meals on Wheels represent helping hands, teamwork and looking out for each other.” Volunteers do not only deliver a meal

to clients, but also fulfil a monitoring role. They receive a lot of training to be able to recognise changes in clients. “This gives families peace of mind,” said Fiona. In Parkes an average of 45 meals are delivered per day. The meals are cooked at the RSL. About 25 clients in the villages have a wide selection of frozen meals to choose from, while Parkes clients also receive frozen meals for weekends. According to Susan Terry, Network Support Consultant for the Western region based in Sydney, the Parkes service is very unique as it includes the villages too. She said the 160 volunteers in Parkes were doing an amazing job. “They are the back bone of the service.” Volunteers work in pairs and can choose how often they would like to work. Fiona welcomed everyone, whether a new client or volunteer, to visit the office at Neighborhood Central. By Maggi Barnard

If you don’t take care of your teeth and gums, you could suffer gum disease. No big deal, you might think, but ongoing gum disease is implicated in chronic low level inflammation which is now linked with 7 of the top 10 most debilitating diseases including heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and kidney disease. It’s also linked to preterm low birth weight and osteoporosis. Chronic low-level inflammation often has no symptoms but it can reflect other chronic health problems. Gum disease is characterised by bleeding gums. Healthy gums look firm and pink and shouldn’t bleed when you brush or floss your teeth. There are more than 500 different microorganisms in the oral cavity. Plaque or biofilm is comprised of many different species of microorganisms and sticky glycoproteins. If you eat a healthy diet and maintain good oral hygiene, these micro-organisms remain in balance, the healthy bacteria are dominant and don’t cause tissue damage or tooth decay. Poor oral hygiene and diet allows the more destructive bacteria to proliferate causing inflammation and a periodontal pocket to form, which is impossible for you to clean with regular teeth brushing. It’s why professional cleaning every 3-6 months by a dentist or hygienist is so important. Bleeding when you brush or floss is a sign of chronic inflammation and should not be ignored! When the gum is chronically inflamed

and bleeds easily, bacteria called bacteraemia can enter the bloodstream. It’s the reason blood donors are asked if they’ve visited a dentist or hygienist in the last 72 hours. If your gums are inflamed, the body produces inflammatory chemicals and can result in systematic effects, affecting other parts of the body, like the heart or the joints. Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults and the main reason for bad breath. In 70 to 80% of cases, bad breath is caused from a build-up of biofilm or plaque, but it can also emanate from nasal passes, sinuses, the throat or lungs. Bad breath can occasionally indicate an undiagnosed disease. A sweet smell may indicate diabetes, a fishy smell may indicate kidney disease and a rotten egg smell suggests liver disease. Rather than masking bad breath, which is a $10 billion a year industry, it’s much better to discover the underlying cause. We are often asked which toothpaste is best to remove plaque and biofilm. Despite the advertising claims, there is no magic bullet, toothpaste or mouth rinse. The most important practice is eating a healthy diet and removing plaque/biofilm by carefully brushing and flossing. A regular check-up with a dentist to carefully remove calcified biofilm, called calculus or tartar, is also crucial. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your oral health we encourage you to contact the team at Richardson Dental surgery on 6862 1261. By Dr Khazima Riaz

Health Smart Keep On Top Of Diabetes National Diabetes Week runs from the 10th -16th July, putting the spotlight on Australia’s battle with this disease. Diabetes is a serious, complex condition which can affect the entire body. Diabetes requires daily self-care and if complications develop, can have a significant impact on quality of life. While there is currently no cure for diabetes, you can live an enjoyable life by learning about the condition and effectively managing it. The three main types of diabetes are type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Diabetes can be managed well but the potential complications are the same for type 1 and type 2 including heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, limb amputation, depression, anxiety and blindness. With 1,250 New South Wales residents set to lose a limb this year due to diabetes, Diabetes NSW urges communities to act now and visit their GP to find out how they can prevent themselves from developing

diabetes or how best to manage it. This year, National Diabetes Week is the ideal time to act. “We are urging the local community to help us spread the word about the seriousness of diabetes, and the complications – such as amputations – that are associated with it,” said Sturt Eastwood, CEO, Diabetes NSW; “There is no such thing as ‘mild’ diabetes and living a life minus a limb has serious consequences.” Diabetes NSW educators are urging those diagnosed or undiagnosed to pay close attention to any minor cuts or flesh nicks that are slow to heal, as this could be a sign their condition is worsening or is poorly managed. Any concerned residents should visit their GP immediately to seek professional advice. For more information about diabetes and activities and events for National Diabetes Week please visit diabetesnsw.com.au.

Farming Fun in Mudgee IMAGE: Michael McCormack celebrates the election victory on Saturday night with daughter Georgina, wife Catherine and sons Alexander and Nicholas, along with National Party supporters and volunteers.

McCormack Riverina Member For Third Term The Nationals’ Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, has thanked the people of the Riverina and Central West for endorsing him to serve as their representative in Canberra for a third term. “I am humbled the people of the Riverina have placed their trust in me once more to be their strong advocate in Canberra,” Mr McCormack said; “With the Riverina’s new boundaries, many people in the electorate have put their faith in me for the first time to deliver for them as their Federal Member. I am delighted with the result in Riverina and I will continue to be a strong advocate for the region in the next Parliament.” Mr McCormack also paid tribute to the hard-working volunteers who worked on his successful campaign, as well as the other candidates who stood for Riverina for a hard-fought and respectful contest. “I want to thank my volunteers who gave up countless hours of their time to stand out in the cold helping me at polling booths,

both at pre-poll and on election day,” Mr McCormack said; “The other candidates in the race for Riverina have generated a genuine contest of ideas during the eightweek election campaign and our communities are stronger for having such passionate people wanting to represent them.” While it will still be a number of days before the nationwide result is finalised, Mr McCormack said the election had delivered a resounding result for The Nationals elsewhere in the country. “Though some results were close, the people of regional Australia have overwhelmingly endorsed The Nationals as the party to represent the needs and interests of their communities,” Mr McCormack said; “I want to congratulate the Deputy Prime Minister, Barnaby Joyce, on a toughly fought and successful campaign in New England, as well as Damian Drum in Murray, who pulled off a spirited victory in a tight three-cornered contest.”

For almost 40 years, the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days has been putting people living on the land in touch with the latest information, best practices and hundreds of exhibitors. Small farms, hobby farms, tree changers and small family holdings have been a focus, as it is often these ‘new chums’ that need a ‘leg up’ in dealing with all those things that need doing on the land, be it fencing, rain water storage, choosing livestock, machinery and implements or a robot drone to go fetch the sheep. Equestrian activities have been growing in popularity at the event, reflecting how horses are increasingly the focus of many rural holdings. Come to the new display areas and enjoy talks from presenters such as Mark Langley and Merje Summiloff who will talk about horse starting and equine psychology. Events this year include three times a day fashion parades, displays from craftsmen such as Roy Davi the Leura bodger and a new permanent feature, the Festival of Yesteryear, a celebration of how things were done in the good old days. The Founders Pavilion is also packed with gourmet treats, private schools, health and home wares to satisfy the neediest shopper. See you at the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days 15th and 16th July, for more information see www.mudgeefielddays.com.au

Monster Show A Blast!

The six giants came and they conquered thousands last Saturday at Parkes Showground. More than 2,500 people braved the cold weather for the first Ultimate Monster Action show to be held in Parkes. The seriousness of the day’s voting soon evaporated with the spectacular after burn mode of the jet car. “The crowd was wowed by the jet car fitted with a helicopter jet engine,” said Professional Monster Truck driver and part owner, Troy Garcia. Bennie the Clown had the children in stitches with his attempts to ride or climb on everything out of bounds for him. Country music star Adam Brand, who hosted the show, had to enlist help from the children to keep an eye on Benny’s antics. Benny did manage to get into the Old Skool monster truck and performed some stunts. This truck is one of the original monster trucks built 40 years ago in the United States to

crush cars. When it came to the action stunts, a monster truck flying three to four metres through the air and crashing down on old car wrecks, sent tingles down many spines. But it was the motocross bikers doing backflips that had everyone holding their breath. “It was the best of the night,” a young spectator summed it up. Troy said it was a bit touch and go for the bikers. “They still did the backflips, which is their most difficult stunt, but the wet weather made it harder to do.” The show ended on a high with a stunning firework show. Troy had lots of positive reaction to the show. “The Show Society was rapped. They were worried about the grounds getting messed up with the trucks as the annual show is not too far away, but it was all good.” Troy said they planned to be back in Parkes every couple of years.

Bluebird Early Education Parkes recently opened our doors to offer care for children from nursery, toddler, pre-kindergarten to preschool age. The preschool class for children aged four to five has Chelsea Neems as their teacher. Chelsea has a Bachelors of Teaching and more than 15 years of experience. She is there five days per week to work closely with pre-school families in the transition to school process. “In preparation for school we are working on social skills, gross motor skills, pre numeracy and literacy experiences, self-help skills and looking after our belongings,” said Chelsea; “We include lots of excursions around the community in the daily program of our transition group. We often make biscuits to take to nursing homes, the Police and other community workers.” Another project staff focus on is friendship and what it entails: appropriate ways of expressing emotions, ways of building positive relationships, discussing personal qualities in each of us, and social and emotional wellbeing. In providing an excellent and engaging early childhood education experience, the Bluebird Parkes centre has stimulating indoor and outdoor learning environments, and applies an engaging, playbased early learning program that focuses on successful learning for life skills. The team have a bus to offer a pick up and drop off service; all nappies are provided, as well as meals. Just like the bluebird, Bluebird Early Learning continuously reach for the sky. The staff look forward to helping your child’s IMAGE: Chelsea Neems with some of the transition greatest potential take group kids. From the left are Archie, Callum, Riley, flight. Jackson and Ava.

SPACENEWS

Address:

The Spacecats travelled to Nyngan to face the Tigers at Larkin Oval. Claire Barber began the game with a deep kick to Nyngan’s right winger and Parkes began defending early. Sally, who has made a great comeback after a few weeks off, made a great run in what was shaping up to be a fast paced game. Nyngan played well but Shayna managed to tag a runner, averting a Tiger try. Captain Hannah Kelly had a great run with Ella J Harris going under the posts to score the first points of the game. Quick play by Parkes caught Nyngan unaware, with Shayna and Emma managing to tag Tiger players. Diving tags seem to be a speciality of the Spacecat defence and Sally and Ella demonstrated that multiple times. A bad bounce from Nyngan allowed Shayna to make a run and get over the line, taking Parkes to 10 with Nyngan still scoreless and a quick turnover allowed Ella J over the line again with Claire converting, adding to the score for Parkes. Just before half time Nyngan were trying their best to put points on the board however Spacecats Captain Hannah Kelly sprinted 60 metres to dive under the posts making the half time score Parkes 20 Nyngan 0. The second half began with Nyngan possession before Sarah took the Spacecats

lead to 24-0 after a try in the corner before Claire goes over again and successfully converts the ball to add 6 points to the score for Parkes. Another try was scored by Demi with Claire adding the extras and Hannah also went over with only 2 minutes remaining. Final score Parkes 42- Nyngan 0. This Sunday, the Spacecats are at home on Jock Colley field taking on Macquarie, please come and support our girls.

DIFFICULT CONDITIONS FOR GOLFERS

Once again the course got the better of members as they took part in the Telescope Tyres & Batteries July Monthly Medals last week. In the premier grade it was Justin Sutton who fired a solid 4 over par 75 to edge out Cameron Butler on a countback while Robert Cheney blitzed the handicap section with the day’s best nett score of 3 under par 68. In the minor grades doubles to Michael Smith (B Grade) and Ray Griffith (C Grade) were in complete contrast to recent golfing performances as both players have been struggling. Smith in taking the B Grade double returned a solid 84 off the stick for a 72 nett while Griffith bounced back to his brilliant best in returning a great 89 off the stick for 70 nett in the handicap section. In other awards Ian Phipps capped off

Email: Phone:

a great day by being awarded the Veterans award with a 73 nett and Phipps also received the Griffins Leading Edge Putting competition after requiring just 25 putts for the 18 hole event. At the presentation of trophies both club Captain Paul Thomas and Robert Cheney on behalf of the winners congratulated the sponsors and all members and visitors who contested the event. The ladies also contested their Monthly Medal with the 4th Golf NSW and Club Medal with an 18 hole Stroke round for trophies provided by the Parkes Golf Shop. Despite the heavy conditions it was Cherrie Phillips who topped the leaderboard with a 79 nett. This weekend, male members will contest the annual 18 hole 4 man Team Stableford competition for the Frank Smith/Champion Post Memorial Trophy and in conjunction will be the 4th qualifying rounds of both the Handiskins and Pybar Handicap Challenge whilst the ladies play an 18 hole Stableford for Cath Kelly’s trophy. On Sunday it’s the annual Holden Scramble 4 Person Ambrose which starts at 10.30am with players to report no later than 10am.
