FRIENDLY STAFF… Tricia Trim, Margaret Marshall with her friendly alien, and John Sarkissian in the Parkes Observatory Visitor Centre.
Science Is Cool At The Dish!
“This is the coolest place to visit if you’re a lover of science and history.” This is one of hundreds of positive comments on the Trip Advisor website about visitors’ experience at the CSIRO Parkes Observatory Visitor Centre. In fact The Dish have consistently earned great reviews from travellers and was awarded a Trip Advisor 2016 Certificate of Excellence recently. Another feather in the cap of the centre was a drastic increase in numbers over the 2015/2016 financial year with more than 95,000 visitors compared to just over 73,000 visitors for the previous year. “This is fantastic and makes us the number one outreach site of the CSIRO nationally,” said John Sarkissian, Operations Scientist. While these numbers are still below the record of 130, 000 in 2003 after the release
of the movie The Dish, John said he anticipated renewed interest when work on the Breakthrough project starts in October. Keeping so many people entertained means constant renewal, such as the upgrade of the 3D shows with a new high definition projector, screen and seats, while the Swinburne University of Technology is working on a Parkes specific 3D show. Margaret Marshall, a staff member, painted friendly aliens taking a selfie, which is now for sale on t-shirts, postcards and other items. If you have not been out there for a while, you will be amazed and might agree with this comment: “The view of the radio telescope as you first enter is nothing short of breathtaking.” By Maggi Barnard

Scholarships For Students With Engineering Dreams
COUNCIL MESSAGE Council has taken advantage of the break in wet weather this week getting our crews out-and-about for maintenance and repairs on our roads. Council thanks the community for reporting damage caused by recent rains. Parkes Shire Council encourages local businesses to apply for an exciting opportunity to develop and expand their online presence. The Building Business Capacity (BBC) Program will offer advice to utilise e-commerce and digital marketing. Make sure to attend one of four free workshops and one-on-one coaching sessions to be conducted by local consultants JPA Business and Adloyalty. Over 20 people attended the two councillor information sessions to learn more about local government. The Returning Officer received a healthy number of nominations, which bodes well for a quality field of candidates for the 2016 Local Government Election on Saturday, 10th September. Today Parkes’ students are painting the town Flame REaD! Commencing in Cooke Park with an opening ceremony and arrival of the Book Relay, the day celebrates reading in all shapes and sizes. Children will participate in reading activities, verse speaking, baby competition, rhyme hunt and games along Clarinda Street. Parkes Shire residents are encouraged to get behind our local Olympians in Rio. Hopes of a medal have slightly dwindled for our local Hockeyroo, Mariah Williams, with the Australian women’s hockey side going down against Great Britain and the USA this week. Scott Westcott’s Olympic campaign only kicks off on 21st August, as the men’s marathon is one of the final events of the Games. We wish both Mariah and Scott all the best in their individual pursuits. Enjoy your weekend. Parkes Shire Council

Three students received scholarships from Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania (SMMO) last week. Mihran Sarkissian, Peter Lindsay and Eloise Clayton were awarded the scholarships, which are supported and administered by Northparkes Mines. SMMO Managing Director, Hitoshi Ito, said: “Sumitomo has been a partner of Northparkes since its very beginning in 1993. We have provided SMMO scholarships to students for the past three years to demonstrate our commitment to Northparkes and our wish to work with the local community for many years to come.” Northparkes Managing Director Stefanie Loader said: “We are pleased to have the opportunity via SMMO to support local students pursue a career in mining.” Eloise attended Trundle Central School and is now studying a Bachelor of Science at Western Sydney University. Eloise is excited about the possibility of a work placement at Northparkes, and would like to return to the region when she completes her studies. Mihran and Peter are both Year 11 Students at Red Bend Catholic College. Mihran said: “My dream is to study electrical engineering, and I hope to participate in the Honeywell Engineering Summer School this year via the University of NSW. The support from SMMO will help me achieve this.” Peter plans to become a mechanical or electrical engineer. “I appreciate the ongoing support from SMMO, and the opportunity for work experience through Northparkes Mines”. The two Year 11 students will receive $500 for successful completion of Year 11 and $1,000 for successful completion of Year 12. There is also a $2,000 grant to scholarship students who enter and successfully complete their first year at university in a mining related course.

Jack Mulligan and Eric Schulze with a finished bird nesting box.
Men’s Shed working for the birds: The Parkes Men’s Shed have been making several hundred bird nesting boxes for mining companies in the region and the Roads and Maritime Services over the past couple of years. They currently have a contract to build sugar glider nesting boxes, which is keeping a group of the men busy on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. While this work is going on there is always a group of men sitting at the table of knowledge discussing the problems of the world. There are also members who use the vast selection of tools to make toys for their grandchildren or to restore furniture. Morning tea at 10:00am is an important time in the shed when all work stops for half an hour and the men enjoy tea, coffee and nibbles. For $15 membership per year, this is a golden opportunity to enjoy a chat and make use of all the available equipment to be creative. Help Kris walk 35km: On 4 September Kris Kent, Spinifex Regional Manager, is taking on a 35km Bloody Long Walk challenge from Palm Beach to Manly in Sydney for the Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (AMDF). “I am taking on this challenge to raise money to help find

a cure for mito - a debilitating genetic disorder that robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure and potentially death,” said Kris. One Australian child born each week will develop a severe or life-threatening form of mitochondrial disease. Kris aims to raise $100 for every kilometer walk to raise a total of $3 500 and gives a shout out to businesses to support her. Please follow the link below to make a donation on her fundraising page: https://blw-sydney-north-2016.everydayhero.com/au/kristie All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you will be sent a receipt after you make your donation. New Tourism Destination Networks in NSW: Six new Destination Networks have been created throughout NSW. The Parkes Shire will now form part of the Country and Outback NSW network. Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events, Stuart Ayres said the new networks would work closely with local government, tourism organisations and operators, as well as collaborate on campaigns with Destination NSW. Tourism produces $58 million gross regional product per year, with the tourism and hospitality industry employing around 6% of the Parkes Shire workforce.

How often do you visit The Dish or when last did you go?
Deval Patel, Pizza Hut: I moved to Parkes from Sydney two years ago and go to The Dish about twice per year. Whenever we have friends visiting from Sydney we show them The Dish as there is nothing like that to see in Sydney.
Lisa Taylor, Southern Cross Care: I have just moved to Parkes from Canberra and haven’t been there yet. I knew about The Dish long before moving here, and still plan to go and see it.
Kristy Fletcher, Big W: I haven’t been out there since I was nine years old. I would like to go again to see what changes they have made there over the years.

20 years
This year Leading Edge Computers Parkes (LECP) celebrates 20 years in business, servicing the Central West and beyond. In July 1996, Greg and Marisa Liebich started Parkes Computer Scene. It was a small shop in Clarinda Street, selling computers and servicing businesses. After a year of being independent, they decided to join the Leading Edge group as one of the first members of Leading Edge Computers. Today the group has more than 130 independently owned stores nation wide. The group provided a space where Greg and Marisa could share their ideas and pull from the wealth of support that the group offered. In May 2003, the store could no longer fit in their small shopfront, and they decided to relocate across the road into a larger premises. With a new workshop, the team grew and the business flourished. In November 2006, Greg tragically died in a light aeroplane accident. This was a difficult chapter in the life of LECP, however the team rallied with the support of the local community. The business continued, with Marisa taking up the role of sole owner and becoming the face of LECP. Today she is supported by Luke Williams, John England and Jason Murchie. As Greg had always been a proactive member of the Leading Edge Group, and following his loss, an award was named after him. The Local Hero Award celebrates the group member that has been voted most willing to lend a hand to the rest. The award is presented after a vote from all the stores as to who they best think fits this role, and is presented at the yearly Leading Edge Computers conference. With the combined total of over 50 years of experience in the industry, the Parkes team is always striving to be on the Leading Edge of technology and provide the right solution for our customers. Times Have Changed
Times have changed in the last 20 years, and technology has changed dramatically. Twenty years ago the internet was still only being introduced to the world through dialup at a speed of 56kbit/second. Since then we’ve watched it grow into ISDN, ADSL, ADSL2, 3G, 4G, and now Leading Edge Computers have partnered with a local Internet company, BitWave Networks to provide high speed fixed wireless broadband to households and businesses all around Parkes. This network has speeds up to 100Mbit/second, which is nearly 2, 000 times faster than the older dial up network. Another development is our new managed services allowing us to remotely manage sites via the internet. From powering on a server, to installing a program, it can now all happen remotely without even leaving the shop. Twenty years ago, Intel had just released
their new processor: The Intel Pentium Processor, which had a 200MHz single core. These days we have the new core processor range with the newest i7 processor featuring 10 cores and 20 threads that can all run at 3.5GHz, which is around 350 times faster. Laptops have gone from being expensive and heavy, to sleek, lightweight and powerful. Where in 1996 laptops were few and far between, these days they rival the desktop in power and price and far out sell the bigger desktop personal computers (PCs). Times have changed, but Leading Edge Computers Parkes always strives to be the leader in new technology. We are always there to provide the latest advice on all that is new to the market, and can quote on anything that your home or business needs.

Thank You For Your Support!
The last 20 years have had many highlights for the team at Leading Edge Computers.
• In 2003, the shop was able to move out of their smaller premises, and buy the shopfront where the shop is now. • In 2011, through meeting sales and service goals with our suppliers, the store was awarded a brand new car. • Through our new partnership with BitWave Networks, we are now able to provide highspeed fixed wireless broadband to businesses and homes in Parkes, Forbes and surrounds. • Always being on the cutting edge of new technology, and providing solutions to any home or business system. Leading Edge Computers Parkes would like to thank the community for getting us to where we are today. Without the support of the Parkes, Forbes and surrounding communities, LECP would not be where we are today. And to the support team at the Leading Edge Group and all of our suppliers, who have created a community in the group that is always ready to lend a hand with information on new technology, support queries, and just about anything that you need to know to run a store. Here’s to the last 20 years, and many more to come!

Re-Awaken Your Sense Of Wonder…
Each year in September, Parkes Shire Library celebrates literacy, science, art and creative play, by dedicating the month to exploring Curiosity + Wonder! “We are known in Parkes for our engaging interactive programs, cultural events and variety of workshops offered,” said Manager Cultural, Education & Library Services, Shellie Buckle. “The Library Team and I have drawn upon the community’s enjoyment of meeting authors and excellent response to art workshops when arranging the first Curiosity + Wonder events,” she said. The celebration kicks off with two exciting events: a visit from a best-selling Australian author and a weaving workshop from a well-known Central West artist. Karen Viggers is the award-winning internationally best-selling author of three novels: The Stranding, The Lightkeeper’s Wife and The Grass Castle. She writes contemporary fiction set in wild Australian landscapes, and her work explores connection with the bush, grief and loss, healing in nature, death, family, marriage and friendship. Karen is a wildlife veterinarian who has worked and travelled in many remote parts

of Australia, from Antarctica to the Kimberley. Her novels are known for their evocative portrayal of Australian people and landscapes. Karen is joining the Parkes community for lunch at Parkes Library on Tuesday, 6th September. Her talk is titled “Finding Stories in Australian Landscapes”. Weaving artist Lanny Mackenzie from Orange, enjoys using naturally sourced and recycled materials for her works. Lanny started weaving in 2002 in Condobolin and found it quite therapeutic, cathartic and a great artistic outlet. Lanny often travels around the central west of New South Wales to pass her skills on to others, and will be at Parkes Library on Sunday, 4th September holding a weaving workshop. Bookings are required for the weaving workshop as there are limited places, and to ensure there are enough sandwiches for lunch the Library team would like to know if you are coming to the author talk. Call Parkes Library on 6861 2309 or email library@parkes.nsw.gov.au. Re-awaken your sense of wonder... Let curiosity lead your life.
Greenlight Collectables have a new home in the Parkes central business district at 240 Clarinda Street between Miller’s Clothing and Domino’s. Greenlight is a local, independent retailer and second hand dealer of mostly retro collectable items focusing on vintage gaming, records, toys and comics. It is all about fun and nostalgia. Gaming supplies and electronics are also for sale. If you are a Batman fan, make sure not to miss the celebration of International Batman Day in September with Greenlight running special promotions and specials on its Facebook page in the build-up to the day. Make sure to pop in regularly as the store’s inventory is constantly changing and take a trip down memory lane to the 1980’s for instance. Do you remember the Intellivision? Released in 1979 by Mattel Electronics, it was a widely popular console until the early 1980’s. Games included Frogger, Astro Smash and Zaxxon. It is currently available at Greenlight.

Travel is a part of our lives, but it can be stressful, especially when travelling with a hearing loss. It is essential to inform your airline at the time of booking or at least 48 hours before if you require assistance when boarding the plane or during the flight. Due to aviation safety regulations, when booking your seat ensure that you are not allocated to an exit row seat. Please advise the airline staff if you require the staff to face you, speak louder/ slowly or lipread. If you are travelling with a cochlear implant you should take your identification card or letter from your audiologist. There is a chance that your cochlear implant may activate the security system at the airport. You may hear a buzz or hum when you walk through security, this is normal. If you are carrying a loan processor, ensure it is off and put it in your carry-on luggage or bag. Do not place the loan processor in your checked-in luggage as this could expose it to X-rays, which may damage the map. Hearing aids are not affected by security systems at airports. It’s a good idea to explain your hearing loss to the cabin crew. They can keep you informed of any important messages, like delays or emergency landings. When the plane is taking off and landing you may be required to turn off your coch-

lear implant to minimise interference with the electronics on board the aircraft. Hearing aids can be left on for the whole journey, including take off and landing. To access a plane’s audio system, some airlines provide loop headphones or headsets, which can be accessed via your telecoil program on your hearings aids and/or cochlear implant. Make sure you have enough batteries for your trip, including some spares. If you are travelling anywhere humid or tropical, ensure that you pack a dehumidifier pack and puffer, which minimises the chance of corrosion. If you have rechargeable hearing aid batteries or an FM, then don’t forget to take the appropriate charger(s). For international travel you will require an adaptor for the country you are visiting. If you want to take your service dog on the plane you must tell the airline about this in advance. The dog must be registered as a service animal and you must present a recognised Service Dog ID card or documentation when checking-in. Service dogs usually travel free of charge in the passenger cabin with you. When traveling internationally you will need to check out the airline’s policy and quarantine restrictions. If you would like advice or more information, call 131 797. (Source: Australian Hearing: www.hearing.com.au)

The Children’s Author And The Geocache
Children’s author Susie Sarah visited Bogan Gate Public School at the end of July to conduct a two-day workshop. Students travelled from Tullamore Central School to join in for the first day. Everybody worked together with Susie to explore the process of character development and to gain insight into how authors gather inspiration. Students made friendship murals, brainstormed ideas, wrote poetry and had a great day of learning and writing together. The Bogan Gate students enjoyed working with students from other schools. On Susie’s second day Bogan Gate students learned about geocaching. Afterwards students had the opportunity to create the school’s very own geocache, setting the
teacher the task of being the first to find it! If you would like to find Bogan Gate Public School’s geocache, the instructions are on the school website at www.bogangate-p. schools.nsw.edu.au. Geochaching is like creating your own Pokemon Go game. It is a treasure hunt with something for everyone. You use map coordinates and a GPS enabled device to find a geocache near your home, in the city, in the bush or even in Antarctica. Geochaches come in all shapes and sizes and some might even have exciting treasures inside. Susie Sarah is the author of children’s books like Playing Possum, Mother McGinty’s Goat, Emily Emu Chick, The
Big Green Tractor, Jumping Jack Jones, Snug Cove Sam, Bob the Bakery Cat, and Wilberforce the Wombat.
Students attending Susie Sarah’s workshop were at the back from the left Daniel Smith, Keeley Towne, Zac McDonald and Jack Smith. At the front are Hayleigh Smith, Koby Towne, Susie Sarah and Xavier McDonald.

How To Manage A Dry Mouth Last week was Dental Health Week and the theme was Women and Oral Health. A dry mouth is one of the side effects of menopause. If you’re going through menopause, you may have noticed a pronounced decline in your hormone levels. This may lead to a range of oral health effects including inflamed gums, burning sensations, altered taste sensations and dry mouth. Dry mouth (officially called xerostomia) occurs when you don’t have enough saliva in your mouth which naturally makes eating and swallowing difficult, as well as increasing your risk of tooth decay and acid erosion. Saliva is the body’s primary defence against decay, buffering the acid attack that follows every meal.
TREAT your FEET!
You may also be using over-the-counter medications for other health related concerns and many of these have the side effect of creating a dry mouth. These include medications for anti-allergy, asthma, cough and cold, cardiovascular, antidepressants and antipsychotics, sedatives, and central acting analgesics, e.g. codeine. Fortunately, a dry mouth and potential consequences can be managed. Dentists can help you and you can try chewing sugar-free gum, drinking more water, decreasing caffeine intake, dry mouth products like Biotene™, and preventive products like Tooth Mousse™ or high fluoride toothpaste. If you have any questions please contact the team at Richardson Dental surgery on 6862 1261.

It is an Australian film that tells a somewhat fictionalized story of the Parkes Observatory’s role in relaying live television of man’s first steps on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. It was the top grossing film in Australia in 2000.

Gail Smith has been a music teacher for more than 25 years and is excited to be able to expand on her teaching to offer specialised programs for Early Childhood. “I discovered whilst working in childcare, that there were no music programs out there for children under eight years of age,” said Gail. “My aim is to introduce a love of music to children as young as 15 months whilst still continuing to teach classes in Voice, Guitar and Piano, and now adding Ukulele as well.”

JUST FOR THE health of it!
Protect Your Hearing Loud noises can damage the structures of the inner ear, which can lead to hearing loss that is irreversible. The harm to your hearing is cumulative, so it’s important to know that loud noises don’t have to be physically painful to cause the damage. The louder and longer the exposure, the more damage is likely to occur and if you do damage your hearing, it won’t come back! If you need to raise your voice or shout to have a conversation, then the noise around you is probably too loud. If your ears are ringing, you may have damaged your hearing. Pay attention to the following tips to protect your hearing: • Avoid loud noises or if you can’t, protect your ears with earplugs or earmuffs. Try not to use cotton wool or tissues as it’s not very effective • Avoid sudden, intense noises, like gunshots. These can cause immediate permanent damage • Use hearing protection while at music events • Give your ears frequent rest from noise. Limit your time in noisy areas and take regular breaks in quieter areas • Set the volume of your stereo or portable music player to a moderate level - don’t try and drown out background noise. On Thursday, 25th August the Parkes Pharmacy will be hosting a hearing check clinic with Australian Hearing. We will be taking appointments for pensioners between the hours of 10am and 1pm. This is a FREE service so reserve your spot today, call us on 6862 2411. Limited spots are available. Remember, one in six Australians have damage to their hearing. The sooner you address a hearing loss, the better the outcome. Take it from the experts and make your health a priority!

Students are invited to get creative and design an electrical safety-inspired poster for a chance to win a $1,000 donation for their school’s P&C Association as part of an Essential Energy competition for Electricity Safety Week 2016. Regional Manager Northern, Mark Summers, said the Be a Safety Star school poster competition was open to all regional and rural NSW primary schools registered for the popular state-wide electrical safety awareness program. “As part of the interactive education program that we run across regional and rural NSW, we are encouraging students to use their imagination and creativity to come up with an original design for promoting an important electrical safety message,” Mark said. “Use artwork, illustrations, words, graphics or poems to share your safety story and help keep everyone safe around electricity in the home, at school and in the wider community.” Electricity Safety Week is held from 5th to 9th September 2016 and is presented by Essential Energy, Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, in partnership with the NSW Department of Education and Communities, to educate students about electrical hazards and how to avoid them. “As we rely on electricity for nearly all aspects of modern life for food, washing, hygiene and entertainment, it’s of paramount importance that we teach children how to stay safe around it,” Mark said. The poster competition is open to all primary schools within Essential Energy’s network footprint and will run from 8th August until 16th September 2016. Schools can submit their electrical safety posters online, by email or post. For more information and full terms and conditions, visit: www.essentialenergy.com. au/postercomp.

All players will participate in a round robin followed by a BBQ and presentation for our Super8’s and Net-Set-Go players. Prostate Cancer The Big Winner
The annual Prostate Cancer and Awareness Charity Golf Day last Sunday had 20 teams contesting the 4 Person Ambrose event. Major winners on the day were the team of Guy and Brendon Bennett, Blake Janssen and Adrian Whittaker who returned a very impressive 51 3/8 nett. The team of Mitchel McGlashan, Kasey Fay-Rice, Robert Hey, Alec Maclean and manager Sarah McGlashan finished runner up on 51 7/8 nett after firing a brilliant 59 off the stick for the day’s equal best scratch score with Cameron and Wayne Butler, Lachlan Buesnell and Cherrie Phillips. The minor placing was taken by Phil Bishop, Dub Rodgers, Paul Applebee and Rod Kiley with a 53 ½ nett in the Men’s section. Margaret Hogan, Frankie Cock, Lynne Guise and Kaye Jones dominated the Ladies section with an impressive 63 7/8 nett. More than $5,000 was raised to help the Parkes branch of CanAssist. President of
the Parkes branch of the Prostate Cancer and Awareness Foundation, Michael Lynch, thanked all players and the day’s sponsors, particularily Northparkes Mines and Central West Credit Union, Radio 1400 2PK & Rock FM and the Parkes Services Club. The final of the ultimate game for amateur golfers Handiskins will be played this Sunday at the Parkes Golf Club. Cameron Butler, Robert Cheney, Wayne Butler and Ian Phipps will battle it out for $1, 200 of club vouchers in a game that sees the four players go head to head over 18 holes off handicap of skins golf. The players all qualified for the final after being the leading players from the five qualifying rounds where the best three rounds counted. Despite Sunday’s result, all four players will receive an invitation to attend the National Final at Hamilton Island. By Paul Thomas
Spacecats Move To Top Of Log The Parkes Spacecats moved into the number one spot on the Group XI leader board after a convincing win of 16 – 4 over the Dubbo CYMS last weekend. Taking to the Jock Colley field at the Pioneer Oval for the Group XI second last round against the number one placed CYMS were 1. Claire Barber, 2. Brittney Ryan, 4. Hannah Kelly (C), 6. Ella-J Harris, 7. Sally Dwyer, 8. Demi-Joyce Winter, 10. Sami Afele, 11. Emma Bayley ,12. Sam Cox, 13. Codie Wakefield, 14. Louise McAneney, 15. Nat Gardiner, 16. Emeline Lavaka, 17. the Spacecats had the Fishes rattled from the first kick. It was a tough game from the onset with the Spacecats controlling their game. Parkes scored twice to Sally Dwyer and Shayna Male, and Claire Barber with two lots of extras. The CYMS’ only try had the half time score at 12 - 4. The pace did not slow in the second half with the Spacecats applying pressure in defence and attack. The Spacecats’ one try to Nat Gardiner stayed unanswered by the CYMS to bring the final score to 16 - 4. The final round of the competition is in Forbes against the Magpies on Sunday. By Kim Ryan
