MAYORAL NOTES Thank you to everyone who supported this week’s Anzac commemorations across the Parkes Shire. It was wonderful to see such a big turnout, a reflection of community spirit. Guided by the feedback received during the Parkes 2030 Community Consultation Workshops, Council has prepared the draft suite of strategic plans. These documents outline the programs and projects Parkes Shire Council will undertake over the next four years, and how these will be funded. Residents can view the draft plans at www. parkes.nsw.gov.au. Council welcomes and encourages your feedback. Last week we welcomed Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester MP who announced a $1.3 million dollar investment towards the construction of two new rail bridges along the Melbourne to Brisbane rail route. On Sunday, residents and visitors have a rare opportunity to go inside some of Parkes’ majestic heritage homes as part of the 2017 Australian Heritage Festival. The Sunrise to Sunset - Parkes Heritage Houses open day will see the doors of six grand homes open. LEST WE FORGET... Parkes ex-servicemen pay their respects during the civic Anzac commemoration service.
Parkes Remembers
There was no rain on the parade as hundreds of Parkes residents turned out for the Anzac Day March on Tuesday. The Parkes Shire Concert Band led the procession. Exservicemen and women fell in behind, and a contingent of relatives, school students and community groups bolstered the parade in a show of support for the service men and women who have served our country. Many braved the threat of rain to stay for the official civic commemoration service and wreath laying at the Cooke Park Cenotaph. Guest speaker Captain Anthony Klenthis of the Royal Australian Navy reminded the audience that Anzac Day honours the sacrifice of Australians in all wars. “This morning the last post sounds for them all,” he said. Local youths gave rousing Anzac addresses. Libby Pepper, a Year 7 student from Parkes Christian School, extolled Flight Sergeant Middleton’s legacy. Her speech highlighted the bravery and sacrifice that earned him the Victoria Cross, and emphasised the values that young Australians should take from such deeds.
“Standing together in the good times and the difficult times was a part of life for our service men and women, may we learn from them and make it an integral part of our lives also,” she said. Parkes High School Captains Yasmin Potts’ and Ross Collins’ combined speech examined the Gallipoli campaign. They gave an emotive imagining of a young soldier’s perspective, noting that they were the same age as many of the soldiers who landed on those distant shores. They spoke of the incomprehensible toll of war, and of the lessons learnt from the Anzacs. “We feel the loss of war deep in our hearts and spend late nights wondering about what could’ve been with their lives, the potential they withheld,” Ross said. “Stories of strength, determination, intelligence, compassion and Australian mateship still echo our walls today,” Yasmin said. “As the youth of today, we will strive to uphold the Anzac spirit.” By Raen Fraser

QUESTION of the week Sunshine Clubs: The Parkes and District Historical Society is celebrating Heritage Week this year celebrating 80 years of 2PK and 2PK/ROK FM. As part of the topic Speaking Voices, the successful 2PK Sunshine Clubs will be included, which formed part of the radio station and raised so much money for the Royal Far West Health Scheme. The Historical Society would like to make contact with the Sunshine Clubs at Forbes and Trundle. Please call Yvonne Hutton on 0418674 261.
David Wilson wore his grandfather’s dress medals on Anzac Day. Harold E Cooke was medically discharged after being gassed in Gaza. His great-uncle George Herbert Cooke wasn’t as lucky. He rode with the Light Horse Infantry, but was shot in the head. David holds the 102 year-old chaplain’s letter explaining the circumstances of George’s death.
Nearly 100 adults and children saw the Splash Theatre Company’s Chris John perform Henry Lawson’s explosive yarn The Loaded Dog at Parkes Library last Thursday. The performance celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Henry Lawson. Chris used tiny props and old-fashioned storytelling skills to recreate the much loved Australian story. Seen with Chris (middle) are Kurdie Butler (left), Matthew and Dan Fredericks (right) and Jospeh Tanswell and Thomas Fredericks at the back.
Debutante Ball: The theme of the Anglican Debutante Ball on Friday, 5th May is Glitz and Glamor to be held at the Robert Wilson Auditorium of the Parkes League’s Club. The 20 Debutantes and their partners invite the community to St. George’s Anglican Church at 15 Church Street, for the viewing at 6pm. The Debutantes will support the Starlight Foundation this year. Gold coin donation entry to the viewing will assist this charity. From the church they will be driven to the League’s Club in vintage cars provided by the Parkes Antique Motor Club. The debutantes will make their time-honoured and traditional entrance into society at the ball. The debutantes and their partners will be presented to Reverend Ron Spindler, Anglican Rector of St. George’s Parkes. The Matron for the ball is Norma Garment, while the duties of flower girls will be carried out by Lilly Phillips and Daisy Rice.
Teigan Miles and Dan Warren arrive on the red carpet at last year’s Anglican Debutante Ball.
Two New Rail Bridges Between Parkes and Narromine Two new railway bridges will be build between Parkes and Narromine to support the delivery of the Inland Rail project. Two timber bridges at Tomingley West and Narwonah on the Australian Rail Track Corporation’s (ARTC) national rail network will be replaced by reinforced concrete culvert structures at a cost of $1.3 million. Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester made the announcement in Parkes last week. He said the upgrades were particularly significant as the new structures would meet the Inland Rail standard to future proof the bridges for longer, heavier and more efficient trains. “The Inland Rail project will provide a rail freight connection between Melbourne and

Brisbane, connecting regional Australia with global markets. The region will play a major role in the delivery of Inland Rail, with the Central West region of NSW set to see $480 million in economic benefits,” the minister said. “One Inland Rail train will support the movement of approximately 2,500 tonnes of freight in a single trip, equivalent to taking 110 B-double trucks off the roads.” The Parkes to Narromine section of the Inland Rail project involves upgrading the existing 107km of track. Overall, the Inland Rail project takes advantage of 1,200km of existing rail corridor and will involve the construction of around 600km of new track. Whose medals are you wearing and why do you think it’s important to commemorate ANZAC day?
Nicayden Greenwood with Noni Greenwood: My great-grandfather Harry Bede Kirk served in the RAAF in New Guinea. It’s important to respect what the ANZACs have done for us.
Tianna Simpson with Trish Simpson: My greatgrandfather Francis Raymond Simpson served in New Guinea. I think ANZAC day is important because the things these people went through for our country is something that shouldn’t be forgotten.
Ben Berry: My grandfather Walter Berry served in New Guinea, and my great uncle Henry Gault served in Singapore and was a prisioner of war. I think it’s important to pay respect to those who have served and are serving for our country.

The Sandwich Generation The Sandwich Generation are people in their 40s and 50s caught between the demands of aging parents and dependent children. Caring for two generations at once can create new financial pressure on your household — so here’s how to lighten your load. The financial juggling act
Running a household is tough enough on its own. You’ve got bills and school fees to pay, and groceries to buy — not to mention repayments on the home and car. So how do you manage to keep your head above water when you’re taking care of children and parents at the same time?
Making the most of family benefits
The good news is there is a wide range of benefits and allowances to help ease the financial burden of looking after your loved ones. And you may be entitled to more than you’re currently receiving — so it’s worth doing a little research to make sure you’re not missing out on what you deserve. Providing for your parents
First, make sure that your parents are receiving all the benefits that they are eligible for, such as the age pension, pharmaceutical allowance and seniors card discounts. If they’re still living at home, they may also be eligible for a range of subsidised in-home care services — see myagedcare.gov.au to find out more.
Then check if you’re able to claim any benefits yourself — particularly if you have a parent living with you. For example, the carer payment and carer allowance give ongoing financial support to people who are unable to work full-time because of their care role. In addition, the carer supplement is a lump sum payment to offset some of the costs of care.
If your parents have assets, then it can be worth finding out whether they can be structured differently to maximise their age care benefits and pension eligibility. However, this can be complex and will be different for everyone, so be sure to seek professional help. Caring for your children
The family tax benefit and the parenting payment can provide you with added income to help cover the costs of raising your children. And while your children are still young, you may be eligible for the child care benefit or child care rebate, or child care fee assistance to support you through work, training or study. If your children are older and considering their study options, they may be able to apply for an Austudy allowance — so they can cover their own costs throughout their education. Getting professional advice
It’s not easy trying to figure out the best financial options for your family on your own. To find out more you can contact us.

My House My Home Make This Mother’s Day Present A Hit Mother’s Day is a really special day for me. Mothers are truly wonderful nurturing creatures, especially my mum, and they are definitely worth an enormous amount of spoiling. Here are some ideas to make this Mother’s Day present a hit. It is all about the gesture not the price tag. At Parkes Furniture One we have gifts that will suit anyone’s budget or taste. Most mothers like to create a home that is inviting, comfortable and welcoming. Maybe mum would love some faux flowers in a vase to brighten up a corner of the room or maybe some new cushions to update the sofa. Decorator pieces such as statues, candleholders or a pot or urn will also prove a hit. If you really want to pull out all stops, why not buy mum her own chair or recliner so she can relax in a quiet corner and catch up on her reading.
There is also the option of a Parkes Furniture One gift voucher, or an in-home consultation with me. I would love to help her bring her decorating dreams to life! Come and see our enormous range of homewares and decorator pieces. We would love to help you pick the perfect gift for your mum. Happy Mother’s Day to all! Love Karen xx

War Correspondent Commemorated On Stamp Australia Post has issued a new World War I commemorative stamp issue honouring war correspondent Charles Edwin Woodrow Bean. Australia Post Philatelic Manager Michael Zsolt said: “This year’s issue is the fourth in a five-year program commemorating the centenary of WWI. Correspondent Charles Bean was a key non-combat figure, who recorded Australia’s part in the war and initiated our national military heritage collection. We hope his place in this stamp issue reminds all Australians of his significant legacy.” The photograph in the stamp design was taken by Herbert Baldwin on 26th February 1917. It shows Bean as the keen observer he was, watching the Australian advance through a telescope near Martinpuich, France. Bean won the Australian Associated Press ballot in 1914 to become Australia’s official war correspondent. He departed for the war in November of that year with the first contingent of the AIF, which disembarked in Egypt. The war would come to dominate his career and life: as well as writing dispatches from the front, he wrote the multi-volume official history of Australia’s part in WWI, commenced the Australia’s WWI collection, and conceived of the Australian War Memorial as a place to house our national military heritage. The stamps also represent four other thematic strands: the Australian Flying Corps, which entered the skies above the Western Front in late 1917; the Third Battle of Ypres, which cost so many Australian lives; the Sinai–Palestine campaign, which waged in the East; and the crucial home-front support for the troops by an army of mainly women. The five domestic base-rate ($1) stamps are designed by Phil Ellet of Castlemainebased Creative Ethos.

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like about living here? All my life – 84 years. My family has been in Parkes since 1862. I am a local girl, Parkes is my home. I went away to do nursing and came back. I just love Parkes and Forbes. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I am President of the Historical Society. I work at the Henry Parkes Museum every day. I love the history of our area and to see the old machines working. It tells the story of our gold mining and agricultural history. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I spent most of my life teaching swimming, but not this year. I like to read, do crossword puzzles and look after my seven cats and the five kittens I saved from the gutter. What are you really good at? Talking, but I’ll have a go at everything. I would say I am an all round person and love being a sticky beak. If you could have a super power, what would it be? I believe we live in such an absolutely fabulous world: from growing up in the war as a child when we had very little to today where we have the internet. This ability to communicate with people instantly anywhere in the world is like having a super power – that is just incredible! Tell us about your best holiday ever. As children we went to Rose Bay in Sydney during the war time. The Japanese submarines were in the harbour and we saw the soldiers at the golf club. It left a big impression on me – I was about eight years old.

PARKES SPORT
Hard And Fast Match Against Kangaroos The Parkes Boars had to face the hard running Dubbo Kangaroos without key first grade players on Saturday, which favoured the opposition to win the match 26-22. The Boars opened the scoring when fly half Lloyd Rogers ducked, dived and ran through the Roos defence to plant the ball under the posts. Rogers converted his own. Kangaroos kicked to restart – the crowd appreciated Israel Symington’s AFL style jump to take the ball. The match began to settle, but an infringement by Parkes gave Dubbo a scrum feed on the 5m and enough go forward to cross the line. The conversion was successful. Dubbo crossed twice more during the half with Parkes restricted to taking a deep penalty kick. The half time score Boars 10 Kangaroos 19. The second half was as physical as the first with the Boars lifting their game. Lock Toby Baigent took a screamer and returned the ball 25m through the Roos defence to be brought down under four defenders. His quick pass sent the ball safely into the hands of the inside centre Ben Powlay. Powlay crossed wide. Parkes cross the line again through the
kick, run and chase of newest team member hooker Bobby Waititi. Rogers added the extras and the Boars had the lead at 22-19. With 5 minutes to go inside centre Billy Sing of the Roos found the line and crossed next to the posts. The extras were added and the Roos took the lead 26-22. Referee Richard Madden described the match as hard and fast for so early in the season. By Cath Ryan
