PESTMASTER RAT AND MOUSE KILLER WAX BLOCKS 1KG $20.00 SUN POWER... Benoit Arsac, construction manager at the Parkes Solar Farm explains how the panels will be fitted on top of the structure starting in two weeks’ time. More than 200,000 panels will be fitted for the farm over an area of 210 hectares.

Parkes To Become Major Solar Power Harvester

The abundance of sunshine in Parkes will be harvested for power generation by the end of the year. Leading French renewable energy firm Neoen is busy erecting more than 200,000 ground mounted solar panels in a 210 hectare area approximately 10km west of Parkes. Parkes Solar Farm, as it will be known, will produce enough renewable energy to power more than 20,000 homes per year. It will be the biggest solar farm run by Neoen in Australia with a capacity of up to 80MW, and make a major contribution to Australia’s greenhouse gas reductions. Project Manager, Warren Woo said construction should be complete by October and he expected it to be fully operational by the end of the year.

“During construction, the project in excess of $100 million, would create up to 150 jobs for local people at peak times.” He said over the long-term contractors would be needed to clean panels, for vegetation management and electrical maintenance. He added the landowner, who is leasing the land to Neoen, were benefitting too. According to Warren the site near Parkes was chosen because of superior solar irradiance, and the land is relatively flat with low tree density and no or manageable flood risk. The site also has good proximity to the local substation. Neoen has there other solar farms in NSW at Dubbo, Narromine and Griffith and one operational in Western Australia, plus a wind farm in South Australia. By Maggi Barnard

EDITOR’S NOTE...

MAYORAL NOTES This week, Council staff joined members of the Parkes Rotary Club to complete the landscaping on the new Peace Precinct at the Rotary Arbotorium. Residents will soon be able to enjoy the space designed for reflection and to gather each year for world peace. Five wooden pillars, designed by local artist Sean Cassidy, have been installed along a dry creek bed representing Respect, Rejection of violence, Resolution, Reconciliation and Freedom. An official dedication ceremony is planned for 28th June at 11am and the community is invited. On Wednesday we acknowledged the important role local educators play in our community as part of National Family Day Care Week. Central West Family Day Care hosted a superhero-themed disco in the Coventry Room, providing an opportunity for the children, families and carers to celebrate the service. As part of Law Week, held from 15th to

Parkes is well known as a sports town, and many people would argue sport gets all the attention. But I would beg to differ as we continue to receive an influx of so many other wonderful stories every week. I would not like to single out anyone or any group specifically, but feel the Parkes M & D Society deserves a mention for putting on an entertaining, quality show of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with such a talented cast and band. To get back to sport, this week there was a lot of excitement at the PCYC when a professional basketball player from the US attended the newly-established basketball club’s training session. Who said nothing ever happens in Parkes? Enjoy Issue 63! Maggi Barnard Editor 21st May, Parkes Library hosted an event promoting community awareness around online scams. Cyber Safety for Older people outlined the common online scams residents may encounter, and provided practical tips on how to protect yourself. New Service Centre For Bypass The Parkes Shire has earmarked land on the west of town for a service centre, the ABC Central West reported on Wednesday. This is aimed at leveraging the economic potential of a planned road bypass. The NSW Government is planning a Newell Highway bypass and the local council has bought about 40 hectares of land on the proposed route. Mayor Ken Keith said businesses, including major fuel distributors, flagged a desire to have highway frontage at a potential service centre. He said such a facility would capitalise on the passing trade, and link in with the National Logistics Hub and mining developments to the west. “Those trucks will also need servicing and fuel and the drivers will need to eat, so we’re looking for a service centre, similar to what Yass has on their bypass, where you have your major services all available to the trucking and the traffic as they’re going down the Newell.”

Claim Your Placemark Online! Are you happy with your online profile as a small business operator? Set next week Tuesday aside as there will be a free workshop in Forbes that is all about boosting your internet profile in the online map services of Google, Apple and Microsoft. “It is all about claiming your placemark on online maps,” said Geomancia’s Managing Director, Angela McCauley, who is presenting the Building the Digital Economy workshops in Forbes and Dubbo. She said not many business owners realised they could claim the placemark which pops up when you do a Google search for a business. “By claiming the placemark you can add more information, such as business

hours and upload photos. This would give you much better search results.” The workshop is for two hours and during the first hour Angela will focus on changes in consumer behavior and the transformation to the digital world for businesses. The second hour will be a hands-on session where participants will start building a web presence. If you are already on the web, you will get tips on how to lift your search results. If you cannot make the workshop in Forbes, the Dubbo workshops are on 30th and 31th May. Google “Geomancia Digital Economy” for more information or see page 2 advertisement.

Scared Of The Dentist?

Kindred is about kind beauty. Every Kindred ritual is designed to take clients on a journey and show that beauty is more than skin deep. “After 13 years in traditional beauty, there came a point where I could no longer go on,” said owner of Kindred, Kim Boardman. “I needed to take responsibility for the message I was sending about beauty and for what I was putting on my clients skin. I start work each morning excited to educate my clients that there is another way and that a bathroom full of products does not equal beautiful skin!” Kim’s warm, caring nature and her passion for what she does shine through offering clients a true vision of just what Kindred stands for. “Kindred is to be kind to yourself – allowing yourself to reconnect and be taken care of; to be kind to the environment by using toxin-free products and to be kind to others.” All Kindred’s treatments are designed by Kim from her more than 13 years experience in the skincare and beauty industry. Offering clients holistic professional treatments using only small batch products, carefully selected by Kim, a Kindred ritual is prepared to get your skin glowing. TOPICALTrivia Australia’s first rail systems were built in the 1850s, however most states adopted different track gauges. New South Wales adopted the European gauge of 1,435mm, Victoria and South Australia built with the broad Irish gauge of 1,600mm, and Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia used the narrow 1,067mm gauge. This created incompatibilities that hindered efficient national transport. The standardisation of Australia’s interstate track was only completed in 1995. Which gauge became standard across Australian rail networks? a) Japanese standard narrow gauge 1,067mm b) European standard gauge 1,435mm c) Irish standard broad gauge 1,600mm See answer at the bottom of What’s On on page 10.

Parkes Library will be hosting an exhibition next month that has been ten years in the making. Erratic Symbiosis, Unearthing Past Voices - Sowing Future Visions, on show from 3rd to 16th June, explores the synchronicity, contradiction, intuition, rhythm and textures in relationships, according to curator Sean James Cassidy. “This collaborative exhibition responds to place as a composition of elements, experiences and narratives through studies in video, sound, soil art and painting. It is a visual and sound-based response to the elements found in nature and relationships. Erratic Symbiosis is an opportunity to reflect on the achievements and struggles of Ub Ubbo’s art-making process,” said Sean. Ub Ubbo Exchange, marking their tenyear anniversary, is a non-profit community that has been facilitating cultural exchanges, promoting art exhibits and organising projects in Australia and the Philippines. Ub Ubbo aims to use 100% local materials and involve local artists and craftspeople, and stands for integrity in art, coming from a greater respect for the gifts of our immediate environment. In creating Erratic Symbiosis the annual crop harvest was the catalyst for studying the land as an intrinsic element for biography and creativity. The exhibit will include a video installation by Jake Atienza, the launch of a Wiradjuri song by the Parkes Wiradjuri Language Group, Sunfield Records and eL Garahe, soil paintings and works by local artists Scott Turnbull and Scott ‘Sauce’ Towney, and members of the Parkes Painters, Parkes Potters and Craft Corner. The community is invited to celebrate the achievements made by Parkes Shire artists and their collaborations with regional Filipino artists at the official opening on Saturday, 3rd June at 11am at the Parkes Library. The celebration will continue at 1pm at the Railway Bowling Club with music and barefoot bowling.

& SPORTS INJURIES CENTRE

Keeping you fit for life

Corked Thigh If you have ever been hit hard in the thigh with someone’s knee or shoulder, you most likely know how painful and debilitating a corked thigh can be. A cork, or a muscle contusion as was more formerly known, is a common occurrence in contact sports, as well as sports like cricket and hockey when a player is hit by the ball. Contusions result from blunt trauma to a muscle such as when two players collide and one is hit in the thigh by the knee of the other. The underlying muscle and connective tissue are crushed without breaking the skin. This causes bleeding within or between muscles resulting in a haematoma. A cork may result in immediate pain, weakness, muscle spasm and stiffness. Most contusions are minor and heal quickly, however if you lose joint range or power in the leg, have trouble with explosive bursts or kicking, it is time to come off the ground and not return to play. It is important that treatment of a muscle contusion starts immediately, with the first 48 hours post injury the most important. Immediate treatment for a corked muscle should include ceasing activity, icepacks applied every two hours for 15 minutes, bandage the corked muscle with an elasticized bandage, elevate the injured limb above heart height whenever possible and avoid exercise, heat, alcohol and massage in the first 48 hours. Range of motion is a good indicator as to the severity of the injury. Difficulty flexing the knee past 90 degrees may suggest a more severe injury that requires physiotherapy assessment. Pro Basketballer Trains Kids In Parkes

The newly established basketball club in Parkes had an extra special training session on Tuesday when two very important visitors dropped in. Conrad Etchi, a professional basketball player from the US, and Rachel Herrick of Basketball NSW, attended the club’s second training session. “This is a big deal for us,” said Debbie Lasserre, who started the club with the help of the PCYC. “There was nothing in Parkes for young kids wanting to play basketball, so I decided to start a club.” She was very excited to get Conrad in-

volved, who is currently on a six-month stint with the Dubbo Basketball Association. He is in his first year as a professional player after graduating from a college in West Virginia last year. “I love it in Australia and it is good to see the sport getting bigger.” Rachel came from Sydney to introduce the club to Aussie Hoops, which is a program teaching young kids the basics of basketball. Debbie said kids could register online for the program and receive a basketball, bag and shirt. “We train every Tuesday from 4:30 to 5:30pm and all primary kids can join.”

Boars Victorious In Bathurst Despite having several key players out for the match, the Boars dug deep to beat CSU 33-22 in Bathurst last weekend. First points of the match came from a full team effort to get the ball to the winger Dyllan Phillips, who ran 35m down the wing to send a long offload to Joe Nash. Nash crossed under the posts. Ben Powlay added the extras. CSU responded with a try on the wing. The conversion missed. The game settled into the forwards with Israel Symington, Leo Havili, Rory Nock and Ben Ryan leading the charge. A strong driving maul put the ball within 15m of the line. Full back Josh Miles crossed under the posts, Powlay added the extras. Dyllan Phillips again found the ball in hand and crossed on the far wing after running through the CSU pack. Conversion was missed. At the half time Parkes had a handy 19-7 lead. In the second half thundering lock Tohi Tangi Nusipepa barged across under the posts dragging the defence with him. Pow-

lay added the extras. CSU were not done yet and in a blinding resurgence of skill they added two tries in six minutes. They were unable to find the posts to add the extras. Flying wing Marika Korivoui put on the move of the match when he collected a deep kick on the 15m line, then pounded back through the full team to be brought down 10m from the line. This move rallied the stunned Boars. Joe Nash again found the line wide of the posts. Powlay added the extras. Despite their determination CSU were unable to add any further points. Parkes took the match 33-22. Best and fairest points: 3 points Cody Bruce, 2 points Ben Ryan and Leo Havili, 1 point Josh Cornellison. Players player was voted to Rory Nock. This weekend the Boars are at home against the Bathurst Bulldogs. By Cath Ryan

Stoney Creek A Success Organisers of Saturday’s inaugural Stoney Creek Medley 3-ball stableford were delighted with the success of the day. Members enjoyed the event that was played to conditions that proved easy to apply but hard to succeed at. This meant any combination of players could succeed, but applying the playing conditions was vital as all players had to use the group’s low, middle and highest handicapped player on six occasions. In a brilliant display the team of Luke Clarke, Todd Jayet and Todd Barrow combined solidly to record 96 points. They will move on to the regional final. The Handiskins, described as the ultimate game of skins for club golfers, commences tomorrow with the first qualifying round. The Handiskins is played under stableford conditions over five rounds with players paying a one-off entry fee of $39 from which $4 is donated to the “Leuk the Duck” charity raising funds for kids with cancer. The competition runs over five rounds, and the leading four players with the highest combined three rounds of stableford scores will contest a skins final and the chance to win a share of the $1,200 in club and/or Pro Shop vouchers.
