Price increases from 30th June 2017 MAKING TRACKS… Brenton Hawken delivered his adjournment debate in the Old Parliament House in Canberra. He was one of 50 young Indigenous Australians selected to attend the National Indigenous Youth Parliament.

Brenton Is A Young Man On A Mission

Brenton Hawken is an impressive young man. He has already accumulated an enviable portfolio of scholarships and nominations and he hasn’t even finished university yet. Last month he added another achievement to his already glowing CV when he was selected to attend the National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP). The Parkes Wirradjuri man was amongst 50 other young Indigenous Australians invited to participate in the week-long program, which was held at Old Parliament House in May. “This had been a six-year goal of mine,” he said. “I was overwhelmed with joy when I was selected.” Brenton admits that he is a very goal driven person. “I set myself a lot of little tasks and challenges and work towards them.”

He can cross meeting the Prime Minister off his to do list. During the NIYP program he had the opportunity to speak with both Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten. “The real highlight was delivering my adjournment debate in front of Tony Smith, the Speaker of the House of Representatives,” he said. “I learned a lot about Australian democracy and the parliamentary system.” Brenton said the experience has definitely helped clarify his ambition, and possibly helped shape it as well. “I’m very passionate about education, I wouldn’t be where I am without access to such quality education. I can’t speak highly enough of the teachers who helped me succeed. “My ultimate goal is to be the minister for education one day.” By Raen Fraser

EDITOR’S NOTE...

MAYORAL NOTES We welcomed Daryl Lawrence from the Department of Industry - Lands and Forestry on Monday to officially switch on the new floodlights at Jock Colley Field at Pioneer Oval. The new lights will allow Parkes to host larger carnivals at night, and facilitate a more flexible timetable for matches and training. I thank the Department of Industry for its contribution of $29,000 towards the $70,000 project. The popular Parkes Picnic Races will kick off the long weekend in style tomorrow. This is a staple event in the social calendar for many locals. There will be plenty of trackside entertainment, live music by One Non Blond and the popular Fashions on the Field. Tickets available at the gate. On Sunday the Parkes Spacemen meet neighbouring rivals Forbes Magpies at Jock Colley Oval. It is sure to be a stellar match with a tremendous display of local talent.

Eliza Scarpellino, Jemima Siddall and Amy Burrows have recently joined the Parkes Shire Concert Band as new members after moving here from Sydney.

Music Is The Key: The Parkes Shire Concert Band (PSCB) has welcomed three new members. Amy Burrows, Eliza Scarpellino and Jemima Siddall are from Sydney and came to Parkes for work. Amy and Eliza are at the RMS and Jemima at the Department of Education. It has been a busy time for the band over the past few months with performances at Anzac Day, the Trundle ABBA Festival, the Sunrise to Sunset Heritage Day and the Southern Cross Village Fete. Seven of the band members also played in the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. “We are keen to musically support the fantastic team who organise the shows at the M & D Society. It’s a wonderful opportunity to become part of a great group of people who all volunteer their time,” said Elly Tom. Rehearsals for the band are on Tuesdays 7 to 9pm during school term, above the pool complex in Dalton Street. Bernie Baker is very proud of the fact that a B61 locomotive has been named after him. “I worked on a B61 in the Hunter Valley years ago, and then my current employer SSR bought one.”

Bernie’s Train Of Thought Takes Him Places

All he ever wanted to be was a train driver, but at 54 he has become the unofficial ambassador for the Australian railway. Parkes resident Bernie Baker is not only the star of Australian Railroad, the highest rating local series in the Discovery Channel’s history, but also can’t keep up with the Facebook friend requests streaming in. “It is hard work being popular,” said Bernie who had over 800 requests since the second series went on air four weeks ago. Bernie has taken me to his favourite locomotive, a 1951 Streamliner, and standing in the crisp winter sun he is quick to point out “I just take it all in my stride. It is quite surreal at times,” he says having a giggle about some of the ‘requests’ he gets from women. “I used to live a nomadic lifestyle working

all over the country and loving parties, but I met my wife in Parkes and we have three kids – it’s the best thing that has ever happened to me.” The same passion for the railway that has made him such a popular character in the first series, drives him and his devotion to Parkes. “I love the town so much I want to be the Mayor.” But Bernie nearly did not make it into the railway. Growing up “down south in Mexico”, all he ever wanted to do was to follow in his father’s footsteps. “I could not get through school quick enough, but they did not want me at first because I was wearing glasses. So I joined the army.” He did realise his dream and Bernie remembers his starting date on 28th December 1982 very clearly. “Who starts a new

Friday 9 June 2017 Page 5 job between Christmas and New Year?” When a friend showed him 34 years later they were looking for volunteer train drivers for the Railroad Australia program, his love of trains was still pumping strongly in his blood. “I got used to having the cameras around all the time real easy,” said Bernie. “The only thing I needed to be mindful of was swearing, as I did not want to be a ‘beep’ on TV.” For Bernie it is not about being a reality TV show star, he genuinely loves being a train driver and enjoys everything about it: the sounds, smells, phenomenal views, “especially of sunsets with a toasted sandwich in your hand. It is a wonderful job.” Like a true ambassador he hopes his passion would inspire young people to become train drivers. “It is a good, honest career.” The second series of Railroad Australia is currently screened on the Discovery channel on Thursdays at 7:30pm. The first series is on YouTube. By Maggi Barnard

The exhibition runs until 16th June. At the opening were at the back (L-R) Jeff Anderson, Josh Cornelissen-Birch, Sean James Cassidy, Cr Bill Jayet and Cr Neil Westcott. In front are Kelly Charlton, Jake Atienza, Scott 'Sauce' Towney, Mayor Ken Keith and Shellie Buckle.

1. Brushing habits Keeping your teeth and gums healthy is the best way to avoid dental diseases, which can lead to tooth loss. For adults this can reduce this risk of tooth movement and tooth loss, which is a common side effect of gum disease. For children this can reduce the risk of early tooth loss due to tooth decay. Baby teeth are very important for maintaining the spaces needed for adult teeth to develop and erupt into the mouth. 2. Avoid thumb sucking and dummies The pressure associated with sucking thumbs, fingers or dummies for a long period of time can lead to altering how the jaw and teeth develop. This can affect the shape of jaw and tooth positioning, which can cause the teeth to develop crooked and distort the appearance of the natural jaw shape. 3. Early intervention Genetics play a major role in tooth and jaw development. Attending regular dental appointments will not only reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, but will also allow your dentist to observe and monitor the growth and development of the teeth and jaw and provide intervention as needed. If you have any questions or concerns, or need to book an appointment, call Richardson dental surgery on 6862 1261.

Major Projects Near Completion Two of the largest projects ever to be delivered in the Parkes Shire with a combined cost of $70 million are nearing completion. Contractors at both the new Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) sites are completing the internal fit out of the buildings, as well as the mechanical and electrical installations in preparation for commissioning. “This is an exciting time for the staff and contractors on site as we prepare to switch over to the new systems in the coming weeks,” said Parkes Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure, Andrew Francis. “Council is planning to host a public open day to provide Parkes Shire residents the opportunity to tour both sites and learn about the benefits of the new systems.” Parkes residents may experience some changes with the commissioning of the STP at the end of May, and the WTP towards the end of June. Andrew warned there might be disruptions to potable water services with the change over from the existing Water Treatment Plant to the new plant, but said advanced warning would be given to residents affected. “Once commissioning is complete, residents can expect superior water quality and optimal pressure.” He expected “no disruptions to household sewerage systems”. John Holland Project Manager, Peter Stark, said the team had enjoyed working on the projects over the past 12 months. “We’re proud to have partnered with the Parkes Shire Council to deliver such a vital project.” The new $40 million WTP will supply safe, secure and reliable water for the Parkes and Peak Hill communities, while the $30 million STP will replace the existing facility that was constructed in 1936.

COMMUNITY WORK...High school students of the Parkes Christian School helped out the Salvos with their Red Shield Appeal last Wednesday!

PARKES Historical Society

Child Labour In The Industrial Revolution The work of Year 9 students of the Parkes High School will be on display at the Henry Parkes Museum for the next month. The panels on exhibit are the end result of a study of the Industrial Revolution undertaken by the students as part of their history course. The Involve Special Program is designed to provide students with a project-based aspect to their studies. The Year 9 students chose to focus on child labour during the Industrial Revolution as their project. Their research lead to a series of collaborative mixed media collages combining archival images, factual information and personal reactions in the form of creative writing, to the working conditions endured by children during this period. Parents and family members of the Year 9 students are encouraged to go and see the exhibition of the panels at the Henry Parkes Museum.

One of the panels made by Year 9 history students of Parkes High School.

Twelve students from Holy Family School joined other students from the Diocese to form the Wilcannia-Forbes touch football teams. They travelled to Port Macquarie to compete in the Polding Touch trials last Friday against teams from Armidale, Bathurst, Broken Bay, Lismore and MaitlandNewcastle. A total of 67 girls and 27 boys played five games against each other competing for 12 spots per team. It was a fantastic opportunity for the Holy Family students to build new friendships, watch some super touch teams and to show what great sports they can be. Congratulations to Jorja Simpson and Bronte Thomson who made it into the possibles and probables. Many thanks to Sue McGrath (Parkes Touch Association), Kate Hillston (boys team manager), Julie Herring (girls team manager) and all the parents who travelled, and offered support and praise to the players.

SAY NOTo Plastic! Every day, Australian’s buy and use products made of plastic. It is estimated that marine waste, mostly plastic, is killing more than a million sea birds and 100,000 mammals every year. Recycling plastic saves energy, wildlife and the environment. The energy saved by recycling one plastic drink bottle will power a computer for 25 minutes. You can go one step further and think twice before buying products packaged in plastic, such as bottled water, or packaged fruit and vegetables.

OUR Gal Helen Huntly How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like about living here? Since I married 63 years ago. I am part of a friendly, supportive community. Parkes has been a great place to rear and educate my family of four. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I am a retired nurse. Being in health was a rewarding experience, being part of a team that mostly produce good results for the majority of people. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I started with art in my later years. Painting takes me into a positive and creative thought process that in turn revitalises my spirit. What are you really good at? I believe I am really good at communicating with most people. If you could have a super power, what would it be? To be able to bring peace into hearts, homes and country. What is your pet hate? The word ‘hate’. Tell us about your best holiday ever. About four years ago I went with family and friends on an off road camping and some motels holiday to the Gulf country sunset over the Gulf, the savannah plains, the Lawn Hill National Park and Gorge, the lovely small towns and the incredible vastness of our beautiful country are memories never to be forgotten.

Splitting headaches, dizziness, sickness, dehydration – we all know the symptoms and why they’re there - ALCOHOL! While there are many myths surrounding hangover cures, this is pretty much all they are – myths! Alcohol is a diuretic, so it removes water from the body. This is what causes most of the nasty symptoms. As well as dehydration, alcohol can also upset your stomach and give you a bad night’s sleep. And you must remember, the more you drink, the longer it takes for alcohol to vacate your body. So, no driving or operating machinery until you’re alcohol-free. As a general rule, your body metabolises alcohol at a rate of .005 per twenty minutes, i.e. having a BAC of 0.08 would take about five hours and 30mins to be eliminated. Now, obviously a healthier liver will work better, so over-estimate to be on the safer side! Useful information, right? Well here’s some more… Tips to avoid a hangover! • Don’t drink on an empty stomach! Heard the phrase, ‘eating’s cheating’? Well, let me say this, you will be the one suffering! • If you’re sensitive to them, stay away from dark-coloured drinks. They have natural chemicals that irritate blood vessels and tissue in the brain that can make a hangover worse. • Drink water in between alcoholic beverages. Carbonated drinks can speed up the absorption of alcohol, so stick with water. • Keep some Hydralyte® handy. This is the best way to rehydrate your body and if taken before bed, you’ve got a good chance of waking up hangover-free! Now, if you ignore our tips, and your head is pounding when you awake, you’re on your own.

New floodlighting has been installed at Jock Colley Field at Pioneer Oval to increase the use of the field for night time matches. The oval is part of Parkes’ largest sporting precinct, including Northparkes and Spicer Ovals, and is home to Rugby League. The club has 75 senior and 150 junior players, and it is hoped the new lighting would enable the sport to continue to grow and attract larger competitions, carnivals and professional grade games to Parkes. The new lighting has replaced secondhand lights from Parramatta Stadium installed over ten years ago. The venue will now also be available for other sports that require the use of floodlit grounds. The Department of Industry Lands and Forestry contributed $29,000 towards the $70,000 project under the Public Reserves Management Fund Program. Minister for Lands and Forestry Paul Toole said at the official launch on Monday: “This facility is so important not just to the Parkes community, but to regional NSW as well, and it’s great to see the commitment of the community and the Government enhancing and preserving Jock Colley Field.”

LEGAL Eagle

New Motor Accidents Statue The NSW Parliament has passed the Motor Accident Injuries Act, 2017 which changes and limits what claims maybe made on your green slip insurance policy. The new statue will commence on or about 1st December 2017 and will apply to motor vehicle accidents occurring after its commencement. The existing statue applies until then. People sustaining a personal injury as a result of a motor vehicle accident will now only have access to statutory benefits regardless of fault, unless they have been charged with or convicted of a serious driving offence. No common law damages will be recoverable for so called minor injuries and a new Disputes Resolution Service will be established. Serious injuries may still enable some common law claims but they are limited. The time for making and serving a claim will be reduced from six to three months, and if you are losing income and do not serve a claim within 28 days of the accident, you may lose your right to back claim lost wages. Statutory benefits for minor injuries and those at fault may cease after 26 weeks. In short, most claims benefits will be limited and green slip costs will no doubt increase the profitability of the insurers to the detriment of benefits. If you have a personal injury claim that is very complex, we can assist in this or any other legal problem. Please contact any of our Solicitors at Matthews Williams.

PARKES SPORT Harry Rows Into World Junior Championships

TRY FESTIVAL…Ash Adams dives over for a try for the Boars.

Parkes Boars Stomp Over Dubbo Rhinos

With two straight losses each, the Parkes Boars defeated the Dubbo Rhinos 59 – 7 at Caltex Park on Saturday. The Rhinos appeared to dominate the opening play with Ross Gilmore crossing for the first points plus a successful conversion. Not long after Boars full back Lloyd Rogers crashed through the defence to score wide. The conversion missed. Sam Standen collected a great pass from the sideline run of Rogers to find the line on the wing, but the conversion went wide again. Flanker Ash Adams was next to score after a fumble by the Rhinos. Ben Powlay and winger Dyllan Phillis combined to run the ball 60m with Phillis taking it across the line. Lock Toby Baigent scored his first of three. Israel Symington was the last to score in the first half. The Boars took to the break with a handy 34-7 lead. It took Baigent five minutes to find the line for his second try. The Rhinos tried to assemble their defence but the Boars kept finding a way through. Joe Nash was the next to crash across after dominating the centre field play for the best part of the match. With ten minutes to go, Baigent crossed for his third. Aron Peters on the wing had a strong run-

ning game, while Rogers took a cheeky inside pass and ploughed across the line for his second, and converted his own with five minutes to go. The Boars still attacked taking the ball within 15m, when right on the final minute Symington put the ball on his boot and dropped it neatly over the posts to add three points and take the match. The second grade Boars followed the lead and put on a clinical display of rugby to take the match off the Dubbo Rhinos. Inside centre Dyllan Phillips, in his 100th senior club game for the Boars, crossed the line two minutes in. Number 8, Matt Parker added the extras. Two minutes later full back Pat Jones crossed for his first and Parker added the extras again. On the 10 minute mark, Jones finds himself with the ball on his chest and he sprints 25m to cross on the wing. The conversion went wide. The Rhinos found a small gap and crossed beside the posts and converted. Half time score Boars 19-7 up. The Boars kept the Rhinos scoreless in the second half. Pat Jones crossed for his third with three minutes to go and sealed the match for the Boars. By Cath Ryan

A 16-year-old Condobolin boy has been selected to represent Australia at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Lithuania in August. Harry is the son of Bernadette and Phillip Crouch and grandson to Julie Harris of the Southern Cross Village in Parkes. Harry will row in the two seat of the under 19 men’s quad scull with three Year 12 rowers from Sydney. Harry competed at the Sydney International Regatta Centre achieving a personal best time in a 2k erg test of 6 minutes 15 seconds. This placed him third overall on weight-adjusted ranking out of more than 80 rowers from all over Australia. He then went through a series of sculling races, in which he ended up ranked 4th overall in a very high quality field. This ranking helped Harry to be placed in a strong crew for the remainder of the trials. To make this feat more remarkable, Harry had to train on his own before the trials when he went home to Condobolin for the holidays. He had to travel considerable distances in order to row each day. Long rows were done at Lake Cargelligo and shorter rows at Gum Bend Lake or on Bundaburah Creek near Forbes. Harry moved to Newington College in Sydney last year to chase his dreams to row for his country. Harry’s uncle in Forbes, Wilbur Harris is selling $100 tickets at Parkes Mensland to help support him.

Harry Crouch (16) will represent Australia in rowing in August.
