The Day When Style And Elegance Rule The Parkes social event of the year did not disappoint last Saturday when a crowd of around 2,000 people, many travelling interstate, flocked to the annual Picnic Races. While the Coradgery Cup for the main race went to jockey Jamie Gibbons on Kijitsu, trained by Andrew Bourke from Boorowa, the competition on the Fashions on the Field stage was just as competitive. Main judge Jay Fisher and his fellow judges had to make some tough choices as entries for this popular event saw an increase this year. Jay, who is a model in Sydney, said he was very impressed with the effort people had put in. The winners in the eight categories were: Alexander Rawsthorne from Parkes (junior), Emily McQuie from Parkes (teenager), Maddie Leeming from Sydney (cutting edge), Lucy Stevenson and Anthony Lock

from Parkes (most stylish couple), Josie Anderson from Cobar (millinery), Paul Cooper from Newcastle (best dressed gent) and Sally Martin from Canberra (most elegant lady). Many people commented that the new stage made a big difference with a large crowd gathering to watch the judging. “It was a great day,” said Mick Craft, Vice-President of the Parkes Coradgery and Diggers Picnic Race committee. “We had about the same crowd as last year and took more than $23,000 at the gate.” He was very happy the weather, starting out windy and cold in the morning, turned and it became a beautiful afternoon with families and friends having a wonderful time. Coffee With all the Trimmings

The Mallee Hen’s Nest is driven by a hate of waste and love of repurchasing. It has been open for 18 months and has declared war on waste selling second-hand furniture and pre-loved clothing. “The name is what our mother used to call our cubby house 120 miles west of Bourke where I grew up – a mallee hen’s nest is always pretty random and thrown together,” says owner Libby. “We want to create a harmonious space with good quality, quirky and well made pieces at reasonable prices.”

Opening early July, Jespresso Coffee is a wholesale coffee supplier with passion based in Wellington. They will offer a range of different services including coffee cart hire, barista courses and training, catering, servicing and spare parts. “We pride ourselves on our outstanding service and quality products.” Their signature little coffee cart has been doing the rounds making good coffee, and will be on site before the opening brewing their signature blend, Lily’s Blend.

Wayne and Julie Shepherd are the new managers and inspired by the breathtaking views of the property and its history, their aim is to bring it back to life. In 1904, Wellington was a flourishing town that expressed its confidence in the magnificent hospital it built for the townspeople. Constructed in the highly detailed Queen Ann style, no expense was spared with beautiful detail throughout the building. Today, the old hospital beds have been wheeled out and a glamorous makeover has turned it into a grand boutique accommodation, function centre and restaurant. The accommodation options include the Duke and Duchess Suite (Blue Stone

cottage) decorated in an English colonial style with four-poster king sized beds and elegant bathrooms. The building is made from locally quarried blue stone in craftsmanship to be admired. Aim To Reduce Waste To Landfill The upgrade to the Parkes Waste Facility is nearing completion with a new waste management system to be introduced. The new system will include the implementation of waste disposal charges for domestic waste loads starting 1st August ranging from $3 to $34. Chair of the Waste Facilities Committee, Councillor Alan Ward said: “With more waste than ever being produced, Council recognised the need to upgrade the site to deliver positive public health, and environmental and economic outcomes for our community”. The upgrade includes an undercover drop-off area with well sign-posted directions and bitumen sealed roads, as well as

a new custom built gatehouse and weighbridge. “Staff will be available on site to provide face-to-face advice on how to best sort and dispose of materials in order to minimise waste charges,” Alan said. There will be no charge for recyclable items. Steven Campbell, Parkes Council’s Director Planning & Environment said research had shown that charges did not increase illegal dumping. He added though that the public should report any dumping to Council. “We will investigate to find evidence, clean up and take measures to prevent any further dumping in that area. It is an issue that needs to be addressed quickly.”

He said Council worked with the Environment Protection Authority’s Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) squads. The aim of the new system is to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfill and improve the waste diversion rate by reducing, reusing and recycling more efficiently and sustainably that will extend the life of the facility. Steven said the more waste that could be diverted and recycled, the better were the chances Council would not have to resort to introducing a levy on waste as metropolitan and coastal councils have started doing. Most people probably think caves and Lake Burrendong when the town of Wellington comes to mind, but with a population of 8,850 our neighbour has many other interesting items on its menu for visitors. The town celebrates its bicentenary this year as it is 200 years since John Oxley first crossed into a beautiful glen he named Wellington after the Iron Duke of Wellington who had defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo two years before. Only 110km from Parkes, the second convict settlement over the Blue Mountains was an important point on the Cobb & Co Trail. You can explore the town’s history with a self-guided walk or guided tour. The Oxley Museum contains a wide range of memorabilia including a replica period classroom from the Windora Bush School circa 1851. If you need a nature fix, the Mt Arthur Reserve of 2,100 hectares has six marked walking trails ranging from 30 minutes to a half day trek. There are also parks and gardens to explore with the Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum a nature lover’s paradise. Fern gully is a man-made rainforest situated beneath an enormous suspended, thatched canopy. In the heart of the town is Cameron Park where you can have a picnic and dare to cross the unique suspension bridge over the Bell River. If you have not been to the caves and phosphate mine, you will be amazed by the 15m high crystal formation in the Cathedral Cave, while you can find out what miners were up to 100 years ago on the phosphate and fossils tour. Wellington is surrounded by rural villages, each with its own history and experiences. Geurie boasts Australia’s biggest Fuzzy Box tree. Mumbil has the famous Black Wattle Fair and the unique ChuckAkubra competition. Stuart Town was originally known as Ironbark and was made famous by the Banjo Patterson poem, The Man from Ironbark. You can also go gold panning in creeks on the village common. It’s worth taking a drive to Wellington to explore its treasures.

Parkes Has A Spark To It The NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events flew into Parkes last Friday to look at plans for the further development of the airport. Minister Adam Marshall said the plans to extend the apron and develop the business park at a cost of $3 million starting in September would mean a huge economic boost and opportunity for future growth at the Parkes airport. “With the development of the Bankstown airport in Sydney, all those businesses forced to move will be looking for other locations. Parkes is perfectly positioned with plenty of land, good infrastructure and communications technology.”

The minister heaped praise on Parkes saying it is a vibrant place with a spark to it. “You know what you are and where you are going. Parkes is not just talking the talk, but also walking the walk with worldclass facilities. When asked about Council’s pitch to Amazon to establish its fulfilment centre in Parkes, Adam said it was a terrific idea. “There is no reason why it could not be done here.” Parkes Shire Council’s Director of Works and Services, Ben Howard said there was a big demand for more hangar space at the airport and six new lots would be developed in the first stage.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Adam Marshall (second right) was given a special Elvis welcome at the Parkes Airport last Friday by (L-R) Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton, Mayor Ken Keith and Parkes Elvis Festival Director, Cathy Treasure.

Living and Lifestyle A Big Weekend Of Fluffing

13 Saleyards Rd, Parkes 2870 Tel (02) 6862 2545

Tomorrow we have some very special VIP guests visiting our store. TV stars and Brand Ambassadors for Furniture One, Ayden and Jess are visiting the Central West for two special reasons. Firstly, they will make their in store appearance in Parkes, but the second event brought them all the way from the Gold Coast. Furniture One ran a nationwide competition offering the winner a $10,000 room makeover and a barbeque with Ayden and Jess and 12 of their family and friends. The lucky winners come from Dubbo, and as we are the nearest Furniture One store, I had the pleasure of organising the logistics of the day. The truck will be loaded with all the goodies that Jess has selected and we will arrive in Dubbo tomorrow for an afternoon of fluffing! Once the room is complete we will be continuing on to the family barbeque and media commitments with the Dubbo press. The lucky couple were so excited and I can’t wait to see the smile on their faces when we have worked some magic in their room. They beat a huge

array of entrants that came from all over the Eastern States of the country. I will feature the final results in the next column and on Facebook. To give you a sneak peek of the pieces Jess has selected. We are going for a peaceful, relaxing and tranquil feel for this busy couple’s bedroom to give them a sanctuary from the outside world. They will be enjoying a new AH Beard king size mattress and a beautiful upholstered bed with underbed storage. Large chests and a huge tallboy will complete the look. Two lovely lamps and a plethora of bedding, quilts, pillows and cushions will add extra luxury and style to the room. By Karen Creith

How To Train Your Brumby

Skiing isn’t the only thing winter brings to the Snowy Mountains; the colder weather also heralds the start of brumby season. It’s a bleak environment for horses; with little feed on the ground most are in a pitiful condition, many perish. National Parks runs a passive trapping program through winter to reduce the feral horse population; it is seen as preferable alternative to culling. While a handful of foals and yearlings are saved by rescue organisations, the older mares and stallions were inevitably sent to slaughter because no one would take them on. Until now. A family from Cobar have set out to save the Kosciusko brumbies. Joe Hughes, along with his wife Mel and their four kids, take all the surplus brumbies in a bid to rehome them. They truck them from the holding pens in Tumut to their homestead in the heart of New South Wales. The mares are spelled in the back paddock to give them the opportunity to foal, and the stallions are gelded by a team of veterinarians. The ultimate goal is to train them for new homes. The Hughes’ offer a week-long clinic to show new owners how to train their own brumby; not only giving the horse a second chance at life, but also teaching the owner Joe’s incredible training methods. It might sound like a rugged cowboy experience full of lassos and bucking broncos, but in practice it’s more like “How To Train Your Dragon” - only with brumbies. Joe’s training technique is as simple as it is spectacular. In just a matter of minutes he can tame an untouched horse using nothing but the clap of his hands and an averted gaze. In a matter of hours a brumby could be ridden around the yard, or stand calmly while someone slides off its rump.

LET’S Play

Minecraft is a creative block game. In creative mode you have unlimited resources and blocks, plus you can fly and mobs won’t hurt you. In survival mode you have to build with limited resources and blocks, while mobs will kill you and you have to survive through the night. There are also online servers where you can play mini games and fractions, which are fun for the whole family. What I like the most about the game is what other people do with Minecraft. For instance you can have a building competition, and if you have two people on your team, imagine what you could build and how awesome it could be. I hope you have as much fun playing Minecraft as I do! By Adam Barnard (9)

Ankle Sprains Lateral ligament sprains of the ankle are one of the most common sports injuries and because they are so common they are often managed too casually and many go untreated. From a clinical point of view the problem with a lateral ligament sprain of the ankle is that they have a very high incidence of recurrence. Gribble et al, 2016, Attenborough et al, 2015 and Tanen et al, 2014 (references can be supplied upon request), found 30-50% of the athletic population and 20% of the general population will go on to suffer from chronic ankle symptoms. These symptoms are often referred to as chronic ankle instability and include pain, swelling, laxity and instability. The contributing factors to the development of chronic ankle instability include; Not seeking medical attention for the primary lateral ankle sprain and return to sport when pain has decreased but function has not been fully restored. The absence of pain does not mean that you are ready to return to sport. Decreases in strength, range of movement, proprioception and balance need to be restored. Doherty et al, 2016 found that exercise therapy when performed in high doses (5 x 30 mins per week for 6 weeks) reduced the chances of recurrent lateral ligament sprains in the ankle by 42% and bracing/taping reduced the risk by 62%. It is currently recommended that you brace or tape your ankle for every game and training session for at least 6 weeks. The decision to return to sport after a lateral ligament sprain should be based on strength, balance and hop tests rather than time or absence of pain. For the fitness of you Linda Reilly

WHAT’S On 17 Jun 17 Jun 17 Jun 21 Jun At the World Health & Safety Day at the Parkes Solar Farm on Tuesday were (L-R) Damian Brandon (senior HSE coordinator Bouygues Construction), Nigel Smith (guest speaker) and Anthony Gollan (HSE superintendent SCEE).

Solar Farm Safety A Priority

The Parkes Solar Farm stopped work on Tuesday to join approximately 50,000 Bouygues Construction employees, temporary workers and subcontractors around the world for the company’s annual health and safety day. Guest speaker Nigel Smith, representing icare and the Australian Paralympic Committee, related his story of when he worked in Newcastle and got caught in a chain conveyor at the age of 25 and lost a leg as a result. It brought a dramatic change in his life - as a very active and keen sportsperson before the accident, he became angry and felt sorry for himself after the accident. He eventually started playing social volleyball and in 2000 he represented Australia at the Paralympics in Australia. “Words don’t come easy to express what I felt. It was one of the proudest moments of my life representing my country in my country. It was just the most phenomenal experience.” Nigel’s message was that workers should always be looking out for each other, as the impact of a major injury on your own life and others around you, is very hard to deal with. He said even someone who had just witnessed an accident could be severely affected. Wiradjuri elder Rob Clegg who did the welcome to country, had the same message for the 70 odd workers saying family always comes first, and “at work your fellow workers are your family”. “In the Wiradjuri culture we take care of self and others, we have been here for thousands of years and we are still healthy.”

More than ten Parkes members of the Mitchell Conservatorium’s Lachlan Regional Orchestra embarked on a musical adventure with the Sydney Youth Orchestra (SYO) in Dubbo recenlty. It was an adventure designed to encourage, challenge and grow the local musicians. Members attended workshops with the Peter Seymour Orchestra and the Sydney Youth Orchestra Wind Ensemble, which are two branches of the SYO over two days. They worked on performance pieces with the SYO members. The end result was a combined concert with the SYO to treat the audience with a performance that was exciting and filled with enjoyment – both for the audience and the orchestras. This event was not just valuable for the chance it provided for participants to perform with SYO kids, but more importantly, it was a wonderful opportunity to grow in the skills necessary for playing together with other musicians. Playing in groups such as the Lachlan Regional Orchestra, the Parkes Shire Band and the Forbes Shire Band gives young musicians the chance to develop maturity in areas such as: • Listening to the other members of the group and learning to play in time with them. • Companionship and the encouragement of collaborating with those playing at a similar level as themselves. • Combining tone, pitch, dynamics and precision through working together and responding to cues and direction from the conductor to make many sounds become one unified and wonderfully textured sound. It was a fantastic weekend and all who went, came away with much more knowledge and skill. Thank you to the Sydney Youth Orchestra for making this event possible! For more information on the Mitchell Conservatorium’s Lachlan Regional Orchestra, contact James Whalan at james.whalan@ mitchellconservatorium.edu.au By Pam Parkin

The young musicians who went to Dubbo to play with the SYO were (L-R) Eliza Kelly, Antonella McFadyen, Isabella McFadyen, Graciella McFadyen, Simeon Kelly, Heidi Parkin, Matthias Kelly, Reuben Kelly and Luka Parkin.

Baker And Conroy Shine

Victories by Tim Baker and Glynis Conroy were some of the highlights of a day of fun filled golf last Saturday. Tim won the Denis Howard-sponsored 18 hole Stableford for men, while Glynis not only won the Ladies 18 Hole Club-sponsored Stableford, but was also victorious in the second round of the Handiskins qualification. In the men’s premier event Tim not only surprised himself, but he dented the reputations of his fellow playing partners Peter Dixon, Robert Hey and Mark Kelly when he fired a brilliant 38 points to win the prestigious Cooke Cup. He was just one point clear of runner-up Anthony Riach. Ball winners from the competition went to 37 Laurie Wakefield, 36 Justin Sutton, Peter Boschman, Tim Burke and Peter Bristol, 35 Rod Luyt, Ron Hetherington, Mark Kelly,

Brian Hogan Snr and Col Barker. In the ladies competition Glynis Conroy and Sue Holman shared the limelight as Conroy relied on Holman to gain victory after recording 39 points. Conroy was also one of a good contingent of ladies who contested the second qualifying round of the Handiskins Championship. The other highlight from the round was the performance of Sue Holman in the nearest the pin awards as she not only took out the Parkes Services Club-sponsored 11th hole for consecutive weeks, but she managed to add the Railway Hotel 15th hole to her collection. Other nearest the pin victories saw Cathy Kelly take out the Lyn Rogan-sponsored 1st hole, Lorraine Maxwell the Parkes Pharmacy 4th hole and Glynis Conroy the Telescope Tyres & Batteries 6th hole.

Successful Dragonboat Season The Forbes Dragonboat Club had a very successful and busy season with regional and state championship representation and some outstanding performances by club members competing at several regattas. The Mulwala challenge with a team paddle of over 20km was described by several members as an event not to be missed The club coach Carmen Stephens has been an outstanding find this year. Her ability to train and coach the team in all the required technique and skill is great. The club is very grateful for the sweeps Neil Stephens, Kathryn Sweeney and Bill

Thomas. Without these accredited sweeps the club would be unable to operate. It’s also good to see Michael Green and Chris Favell having a go at sweeping. The club’s annual general meeting is on 6th July at 6:30pm at the Forbes Sports & Recreation club. If you are interested in dragon boating and would like to come and try, go to Facebook or the website. Serious training will resume in August in preparation for the next season’s regattas and the Kalari–Lachlan River Arts Festival in September. By Chris Sweeney

The No 2 Pennant team went to the Regional playoffs in Dubbo and defeated Gulgong, but went down to Dubbo City. Liz Byrne scored two points on the last end to win her game 22-20 in a great game to watch. Pictured are (L – R) Pat Cooney, Betsy Johnstone, Rhona Went, Rosemary Mitchell, Liz Byrne, Elaine Miller, Robyn Morgan and Maree Grant.
