VALENTINES DAY DAY OF FUN… Twiggy McGirr was one of the local musicians to entertain the crowd. On the right is organiser for the Railway Bowling Club Lilian Thomson with Currajong Disabiity Service client Cherie Lovett.

Day On The Green Huge Success

True to its caring nature the Parkes community came out in droves to support the inaugural Day On The Green fundraiser for Currajong Disability Services at the Railway Bowling Club last Saturday. Almost 300 people attended the event, brainchild of Lilian Thomson and the Railway Bowling Club, to help Currajong raise much needed funds for a Care Chair. With over $5,000 raised the objective was achieved much to the delight of all concerned. “Currajong currently has three wheelchair bound clients and only one Care Chair. This means we can now arrange a second one for our clients,” said Currajong CEO Jeff Evans. “We are extremely grateful and can’t put into words what this means for us and our

clients who will directly benefit from the overwhelming generosity of the community. The support is fantastic,” said Jeff. The day featured a who’s who of the local music scene with Birdie and Georgie Sideris, Chris Orr, Jordie Dwyer, Twiggy McGirr and Tommy and Holly Orr providing entertainment. The auction and array of lucky door prizes added to the fun. For Marketing and Communications Coordinator Dane Millerd, the day couldn’t have gone any better. “I really must thank Lilian and the team at the Railway Bowling Club as well as Sue Maxwell and our own Indigo Kriedemann for their tireless efforts to make this day a reality,” he said. After the overwhelming success of the day the general consensus among attendees was unanimous: “When is it on again?”

MAYORAL NOTES This week Council launched the Parkes National Logistics Hub Business Attraction campaign, aimed at attracting major logistics, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution companies to establish operations in Parkes. Residents can learn more about the campaign via www.parkeshub.com.au or @ParkesHub on Facebook and Twitter. Congratulations to Yasmin Potts and Madeline Swan who are the 2018 recipients of the Jack Scoble Scholarship. The scholarship aims to financially assist Parkes Shire high school graduates to commence undergraduate studies. Council staff are gearing up to go headto-head with our Council counterparts in this year’s Local Government Touch Football Carnival at Cheney Park on Saturday, 24th February. Now in its 26th year, the carnival attracts teams from across the eastern states of Australia. Parkes has joined forces with other Central NSW tourism stakeholders to develop a regional tourism directory. Visitors will be able to search the information hub for key experiences in their chosen destination and neighbouring destinations thanks to an inbuilt geospatial feature. Local tourism operators are encouraged to get involved by listing their business with the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (ATDW), with Central NSW populating the directory from this national platform. Banjo Bush Poetry Festival Orange will be celebrating one of Australia’s most iconic poets for the fifth time this year with the Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival from 16th to 25th February. A.B ‘Banjo’ Paterson was born on the property “Narrambl” in the Orange region on 17th February 1864, and grew up to become one of Australia’s literary legends. “Banjo’s country childhood had a strong influence on him, being considered the bard of the bush for iconic poems such as Waltzing Matilda, The Man From Snowy River and Clancy of the Overflow,” said Justin Byrne, festival chairman. The Food & Wine Night Market on Friday 16th February will officially open the festival, and is one of six signature events: the

The Parkes Ladies Lounge had a good turn out at its first meeting of the year. Twelve women turned up to work on a craft and socialise. They meet every Tuesday from 1 to 3pm at the Community Hall in Cooke Park.

Is there something you’ve always wanted to do, but are too scared to do?

Colleen Mitchell: I would like to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but am scared of heights. They say you should overcome your fears, but I don’t know about heights, especially looking down.

Rosemary Prior: I have flown in helicopters, small planes and big planes (after I’ve taken a Valium…), but feel too scared to go in a hot air balloon. I am worried it will go puff and then fall to earth.

Rose Jones: I would love to go on a cruise liner to an island and enjoy all the onboard entertainment and being waited on, but being surrounded by so much water scares me. Probably because I am not a strong swimmer.

Let’s Talk About Bums

‘NO PARKING’ ZONES ‘No Parking’ zones are located near the entrances of most schools within the Parkes Shire to ensure the safe drop off and pick up of passengers. It is illegal to park or stop in ‘No Parking’ zones for longer than 2 minutes, and you must be within 3 metres of your car at all times. The fine for stopping within a ‘No Parking’ zone is $183 and 2 demerit points.

Help keep our Parkes Shire kids safe! A message from Parkes Shire Council and Parkes Primary Schools.

Running from the bottom of Tasmania to the tip of Cape York might sound like an impossible mission, but a resident of Birdsville in Outback Australia has set herself this challenge to raise awareness of bowl cancer. Parkes will be part of the Running for Bums challenge with Jenna Brook running through our town on 27th March. Jenna will be covering in excess of 4,500km and plans to complete the epic journey in around four months. Her aim is to start a lot of conversations along the way. Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in Australia, and not enough people talk about it. Jenna hasn’t always been a runner – in fact she has never really been a consistent one until this idea popped into her head. In 2012 she walked 435km across the Simpson Desert, and has since finished two 250km ultra marathons at a snail’s pace. Jenna will also be spreading the message of how moving and keeping active can play an important role in the fight against bowel cancer. Jenna is inviting local community groups, runners, or wellness groups to organise an event for when she reaches Parkes. Contact her on Facebook or on her website at https:// runningforbums.wordpress. com/.

Mouthguards are an essential item for people playing sport and can save your teeth from damage. Professionally fitted mouthguards are prepared in a dental laboratory from impressions made by your dentist. Almost half of all sporting injuries are dental-related. The injuries, sustained by collisions, include chipped or broken teeth, teeth concussion, avulsion (separation by pulling or tearing) and subluxation (fracture or partial dislocation). Custom-made mouthguards are more expensive, but conform exactly to your teeth structure and offer the best protection. Mouth-formed mouthguards, also known as “boil and bite” mouth guards, are immersed into boiling water and placed in the athlete’s mouth to shape it around the contours of the teeth. Ready-made mouthguards are an overthe-counter (OTC) product and the least expensive option, but also the least comfortable and effective. Benefits of a custom-made mouthguard:

Dental injuries caused by collisions often require significant repair that can potentially incur hefty financial and emotional costs. Many injuries can be avoided by wearing a custom-made mouth guard. These mouthguards not only offer optimum protection and cushioning against sudden impacts and collisions, but they also allow you to speak and breathe clearly during games. They are moulded after a dentist has evaluated and precisely measured your teeth structure. The mouthguard does not sacrifice oxygen intake, which is critical for comfort and proper breathing. The wearer is also able to speak clearly without any discomfort. The other options do not conform as well to the teeth and mucosa, resulting in lack of adaptability. They are unable to absorb and distribute the impact of the trauma, which defeats the purpose of wearing them. Avoid dental sporting injuries by wearing a dental mouth guard. Love is in the Air

Spoil Your Loved One Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year that is solely dedicated to love and companionship. For many this day involves spoiling each other with flowers, cards, teddy bears and chocolates while others prefer to surprise each other with a small gift or a night out to the movies or dinner. The day originated at the Roman Festival Lupercalia when women would put their names in an urn and have them drawn out by a man they would be committed to for the next year, and more often than not these matches ended up in marriage. Romance is a key factor to a healthy relationship and helps to keep the spark alive between couples. Even if you are away on the day a simple phone call or a card with your name and a small gift will still show your affection and commitment to the one you love. Some ideas to surprise your loved one this year would be to let them sleep in, bring them breakfast in bed. In the language of flowers a single red rose or a bouquet of roses says ‘I love you’. It is important to tell the ones we love how much they mean to us before it is too late. No matter what you do, just celebrate with your loved one and spoil them!

Let flowers do the talking this Valentines Day.

New Campaign To Attract Big Business With Parkes’ strategic location in the national transport network, a multi-media marketing campaign will target major logistics, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution companies to establish operations in our town. The campaign, supported by the NSW Government’s Regional Growth - Marketing and Promotion Fund, follows the start of construction on the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail project. “Parkes National Logistics Hub is set to be one of Australia’s largest and one of its most exciting greenfield developments,” said Parkes Shire Council’s General Manager, Kent Boyd. “This campaign will further highlight the great opportunities that exist in Parkes for importers, exporters and manufacturers. “We are delighted to have several major logistics operators on board to champion the campaign, including SCT Logistics, Pacific National, Linfox and ARTC – all of whom call Parkes home, as well as industry leaders from the National Farmers’ Federation, Australian Railway Association and the Australian Logistics Council.” The campaign integrates digital marketing, print media, video content, signage, social media and a new website to promote the benefit of Inland Rail and the opportunities for business to leverage from the Parkes National Logistics Hub to tap into new markets. The campaign follows on from Parkes Shire Council’s cheeky social media pitch to Amazon in 2017, which attracted close to one million views and highlighted the fact that 80 per cent of Australia can be reached by road from the town within 24 hours. The Parkes National Logistics Hub is a 600 hectare intermodal estate, uniquely positioned at the intersection of the East/West rail line, the North/South Newell Highway, and the new $10 billion Inland Rail. Potential investors can learn more about the Parkes National Logistics Hub and via Facebook and Twitter @ParkesHub, and download the Parkes Hub Prospectus via the website www.parkeshub.com.au.

OUR Bloke Paul Lewin How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like about living here? I moved to Parkes in 2005, so this is my 13th year. I love Parkes and the people here, it is a great county town and everybody is so friendly. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work at 1300 BUGMAN Pty Ltd. I’ve been a Pest Controller for over 15 years and I love the variability of our work. We could be spraying spiders in Forbes on one job and tracking down termites in Parkes on the next one. What do you do in your spare time after work and over weekends? I enjoy spending time with my partner Alice and of course, like all males, I enjoy time with the boys playing golf, lawn bowls, pool, Xbox or just relaxing with a drink or two. What are you really good at? Making mistakes lol… maybe FIFA on the Xbox! If you could have a super power what would it be? To make the world a happy place, I don’t know what my name would be but it would be awesome to have the ability to spread happiness around sometimes! What is your pet hate? Lying, I hate lying. Tell us about your best holiday ever? This is a hard one. I have had so many great holidays but it would have to be Tassie. Alice and I go to Tassie quite a bit. We went to the Mona Museum and participated in the Taste of Tassie and lots of other touristy things. My brother takes us cray fishing and we have done some tuna fishing. I’m not much of a fisherman but the whole experience was amazing!

Get Your Head Around Lice

It’s that time of year again so here’s a few facts and tips about head lice and treatments available. FACTS • Headlice are wingless insects that live, breed and feed on the human scalp. They have a 21-day life cycle. • Headlice can’t jump or fly. Infestation occurs through direct contact - this can happen through play, swapping hats and cuddling. • You only have to treat the affected child and not the whole family, unless they have headlice. • Itchiness may not disappear immediately after treatment so keep checking the hair. HINTS • Tell your kids to not to swap hats in the playground to prevent infestation through contact. • Long hair should be tied back. This makes it harder for lice to get access to the hair. If you have a girl, avoid sharing hairbrushes. • Do a quick check every night. The faster you get on top of an infestation, the easier it is to treat. TREATMENT • Head lice live in the hair and go to the scalp to feed. Therefore, head lice products must be applied to all parts of the hair. • Once treated, comb through the hair with a fine-tooth head lice comb. This will help to remove the dead eggs and lice, and possibly any eggs still living. • No topical treatment kills 100% of the eggs, so treatment must involve two applications, seven days apart. Insecticide resistance is common, so you need to check that the lice you comb out are dead. If successful, the lice will be dead within 20 minutes. If unsuccessful, the treatment has not worked and the lice are resistant to the product. For more advice, speak to one of our friendly team members in store.

THE SUPER SEVEN… The Forbes Dragon Boat Club members selected to represent Western NSW are (L-R) Warren Edwards, Chris Favelle, Claire Davis, Rochelle Smith, Donna Edwards, Beth Thomas and Bill Thomas.

Lachlan Dragons’ Magnificent Seven

Seven members of the Forbes Dragon Boat Club have been selected to represent Western NSW in the upcoming National Dragon Boat Championships. They are Bill and Beth Thomas, Warren and Donna Edwards and Rochelle Smith of Parkes; and Chris Favelle and Claire Davis of Forbes. The championships will be held at Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast, with Western NSW competing on 4th of March. The ‘magnificent seven’ have been training hard under State coach Deb Clarke, and assistant coach Lou Linke. They took part in a regatta against the top ACT teams on Lake Burley Griffin on Saturday with some of the crew competed in as many as nine races, all over a distance of 500 metres! “It was a fabulous day on the water,” said Coach Deb, “with everyone paddling so

strongly and with commitment.” It was a rewarding day as the teams made all finals and won one gold and one bronze place. “The feeling of being in a boat racing to first place is indescribable,” said Beth Thomas. “Paddlers are totally focussed on their individual part in the race, but are conscious as well of keeping perfect time and technique with their fellow crew members. As our boat cut through the water, we were very closely flanked on either side by the fastest of the ACT teams. Neck and neck. Stroke for stoke. Beat for beat. Then the Western team found their ‘inner mongrel’ (as the coach likes to quote) and we drew away in the last few metres to take the first place. It was an exciting end to a great day.” If you’d like to join up and become a dragon boater, practise times are on Thursday at 5:45pm or Sunday at 8:15am at Lake Forbes.

Several bowlers enjoyed a great day of bowling this week. In the triples games Kim Evans, Rosemary Mitchell and Minnie Riordan had a narrow victory over Chris Cox, Di Howell and Gwenda Carty 12- 11, while Isabel Svendsen, Brenda Davies and Joan Simpson defeated Valmai Westcott, Margaret Hawken and Cherie Frame 20 -12. Lorraine Baker, Frances Charlton and Robyn Morgan defeated Chris Curteis, Maureen Miller and Liz Byrne 18 -15. In a pairs game Marja Iffland and Rhona Went were too strong for Merilyn Rodgers and Betsy Johnstone 29 -10. Prize winners for the day were Marja and Rhona and runners-up Chris, Di and Gwenda. The draw for the Club Championship Singles, on or before 13th February, is: Cherie Frame vs Lorraine Baker. Marker Audrey Jones. Robyn Morgan vs Gwenda Carty. Marker Minnie Riordan. Maree Grant vs Liz Byrne. Marker Brenda Davies. Brenda Davies vs Kim Evans. Marker Marja Iffland. Nominations for the CWD Singles are open, names on board please. The next Trading Table will be held on 20th February and will be a Pick-a-Box table with items being extra special please. By Rosemary Mitchell
