JABEL MILA

‫تل‬-‫أبيب‬ ‫אביב‬-‫תל‬

TEL AVIV FALL 2018-SPRING 2019

Considering the necessity for public services in the realm of public space to displaced populations and the ongoing Israel- Palestine conflict, we’ve designed a library for the spoken word. word This library will not only allow for self education, (as libraries have done for centuries) but it will be devoted to the learning of Arabic and Hebrew, as communication language is key to communication, (and the understanding of cultures) particularly for two populations, that although are in peace, still carry resentment and distrust. The building itself will physically for a new landscape in order to blur the concept of a singular ownership of the actual land, allowing for a thoroughly symbiotic cultural exchange. * Jabel Mila meaning “mountain of words” is derived from the Arabic word JABEL meaning “mountain” and MILA which is Hebrew for “word”

JABEL MILA The architecture becomes disorienting as it is a transition point from a dense urbanistic area that leads to an open space and the beach.

MUTATIONAL MEDIUMS Using the Arch and Dome which are universally known, as well as the Tent typology, which is in particularly of great importance to Jewish and Arab cultures, a methodology was developed that allows for both the structural stability of the dome and arch, and the spatial and programmatic fluidity of the tent.

JABEL MILA Eliminating the concept of a front and a back provides an unfamiliar experience, only to the point of which any visitor could feel equally as foreign.

ECOSCORE Lawrence Halprin’s RSVP cycles were used as a reference to developed a system of “scores” and sequences that would further the design by guiding and expressing how the occupant completes the spaces designed for them, in other words: Designing conditions of occupation rather than designing the occupation itself.

PANKOW SPIELHAUS PANKOW, BERLIN SUMMER 2018

The area of Pankow consists of two neighborhoods separated by train tracks. Though the separation does not seem so grand, there is much difficulty traversing from one side to the other. In an attempt to unify the neighborhoods physically as well as socially, we propose a cultural center in which users of all ages and socioeconomic standing may come together in the form of leisure.

PANKOW SPIELHAUS One of the main concepts that we incorporated within our program was that of the bottom up or “do it yourself design. The modules allow users to take control of the design and scale to which they desire, as well as regulating the capacity at which they can design.

SOCIAL BRIDGING BROOKLYN, NY FALL 2016

Freshman Dormitory proposal for Pratt freshmen encompasses three main concepts: Bridging, Layering, and Sharing, to better facilitate social Sharing interactions. Each has a relationship to an area of the final scheme and incorporates this in a variety of scales that take place throughout the process of exploration.

ANALOGUE In determining the layout of the dormitory, we studied the analogue of an eroded rock. rock The porosity, and ability to be aggregated allows for plenty of access points and seamless flow, prioritizing shared spaces rather than units.

UNIT LOGIC The basic unit aggregation is based on the shared spaces. spaces The communal space on each floor serves as the center around which the units surround the space. Each unit includes the two separate unit spaces (for two occupants) and the mid-space that is shared between four occupants.

04 CONTINUOUS R I B B O N Structural element transforms while linking four designed urban interventions

CONTINUOUS RIBBON SPINA OF ST.PETER’S ROME, ITALY SPRING 2018

Walkway structure design inspired by the structural continuity and industrial aesthetic of the rail system at Testaccio Slaughterhouse. This cultural complex, located in the central Spina of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, uses an existing Roman industrial precedent, redesigned for the eye of the public. The use of testaccio rails is intended to create a sense of familiarity for occupants, rather than the disconnect that a new intervention may cause.

DESIGN JUSTICE A common theme in my work in the expressed interest in urban interventions as well as cultural spaces that encourage diversity, and thus foster community exchange. Emphasizing shared spaces and occupant centered design, is something I find to be key in designing these spaces of collaboration. Consistently using architecture as a tool for further understanding history, infrastructure, and the role of design in re-defining the city’s landscape, regions, and ecosystems to meet the challenges we face, including climate change, rapid urbanization, and social inequality.

Portfolio cover page explained: The image I have used for my cover page is the line work extraction from form finding research and experimentation. In the early stages of my thesis proposal, I worked with a series of materials, one of which was foam cubes that I melted and later 3D scanned to extract the lines that created cascading crevaces and nooks.
