welcome
Welcome to this terms edition of what’s happening. We’ve put this together to help you get an overview of what’s going on in our church community. It would be impossible to capture all that is going on in a growing church like ours, so we focussed on some stories and areas of church life that give you a taste of what’s happening. We’ve grown significantly over the last term and we are always wanting to make space for anyone who wants to be involved. That’s why we are looking for a larger premises for our Sunday services so we can take the next steps in our adventure together - see page 10-11 As we follow God, his presence is at work in our lives and our church community. His presence and the convictions and values that we have, help shape the spiritual climate of our church. We want to keep growing and develop an excellent church culture that helps those seeking find truth, the hurting find help
and the hungry get fed. We believe that every person in our church is valuable and has a part to play. That’s not a catchphrase, it’s actually what we believe. This term through our Sunday services we’ll be looking at those things that make for a real faith and a healthy church culture, so that as we grow it’s on good foundations. Our students from different universities will be gathering for “furious love”, an urban camping experience in Birmingham! The youth are all excited about Dreaming the Impossible in April and we have plans to plant new cell groups too. The women have a day together and the guys have gatherings in the diary as well. Looking forward to a great term together.

We aim to be a church where anyone can come, feel welcomed and find their way in at their own pace. Our desire is that everyone can experience God’s life and love and find a place to belong. A great way to find out more about the church is to attend a connect event. These happen on a regular basis and are an opportunity to share some food, hear our story and see how you can be involved. First, pick up a connect card. Pick up a connect card on a Sunday from the information desk or the offering basket. Second, fill it in and give it in. Fill in your connect card and either put it in the post box in the information desk or give it to one of the welcome team. Third, come along. Check the date of the next connect event and come along.

my story
MY BECKY GREENHALGH
Tell us a bit of your story? I can’t remember a time I didn’t believe in God. When I was little I believed God to be more like Father Christmas; someone who would give me good stuff if I behaved myself. I remember when I was about six I asked God for a million toffees. I was pretty disappointed when nothing happened! My parents started going to church when I was quite young, and I went to Sunday school. When I was about ten they decided to give their lives to Jesus and got baptised. I remember being interested in this but as I got a bit older I started playing sport competitively on Sundays and went to church less and less.
p6
Then, at 13 my Uncle passed away and I watched my cousins struggle with losing their Dad. I didn’t stop believing in God but I was so angry with him. Around this time I started drinking with my friends and doing stuff I’m not proud of now. I felt very distant from God. In 2004, I agreed to go to Soul in the City with my older brother. I knew it was a christian event but I was excited about the stuff we would be doing, such as kids clubs and gardening. In the mornings, we had talks and worship and I remember being blown away by what was being said about God. It left me with a lot to think about as we served the city in the day. Then in the evenings we would go to
or different events. One night, I saw the gospel being portrayed through drama and dance and nothing’s ever spoken to me so clearly. Jesus died for me. Jesus died for me, what was I going to do in response? That night I broke down and gave my life to Jesus.
I wish I could say that event - completely changed how I lived my life, but it was more of a gradual process. I had some messy relationships in my late teens but the amazing thing was that every time I messed up I felt God near me and felt his forgiveness. Gradually, I began to learn that God wanted the best for me and when I left school and joined Youth for Christ’s theatre company, I really began to give every part of my life over to God. How did you first out about the church? I moved to Birmingham in 2010 and was certain that God would guide me to the right church and that would be it. However, I think I church-hopped for the first couple of months. I really enjoyed the other churches but didn’t ever really feel at home. I had been told about Vineyard by some friends from Youth for Christ, and when I met some girls that went there at the university’s gospel choir, I decided to give it a go.
What was it like when you came? The first Sunday I went, I felt so welcomed and at home. I remember the eagerness for everyone to get involved and serve, and this really excited me. I also remember seeing how the kids and the young people were so on fire for God and it was clear how much the church had invested in them and encouraged them to have real, personal relationships with Jesus. Having worked with young people who had felt let down by the church, I felt it was really important that my home church highlyvalued young people. What has changed as you have got to know
more about God? As I’ve got to know more about who God is, I feel like I’ve got to know more about who I am and what my purpose is. I love that Vineyard really encourage you to listen to God, worship him with your life, speak words of prophecy to each other, and so much more that has really helped me connect with God on a more intimate level. I used to be such an independent person and hated relying on other people, but now I’ve learnt that really I am so weak and God is so strong, and I’ve learnt that if I’m completely dependent on Him anything is possible, because it is God in me at work and not me trying to do it on my own.
y
How would you describe your faith now? If I said I’d got it all sorted that would be a lie, but I think it is fun, the whole growing process that I think faith is. I picture it like a person who can’t see very well, and they’re fumbling around a bit but God is clearly guiding them and every time they take a step forward in the right direction they have the greatest sense of excitement and peace. I really respect and love learning from people who are further along on the journey than me and I hope that like them, my faith can continue to grow every day.

Our Be Positive scheme has been developed OUT REACH in response to local schools asking Networkfour to support individual children at school. Be Positive engages and mentors children with key-skills issues, that leave them finding the normal school environment challenging. Likewise our meet JO (Job Opportunites) is an open Job Skills advice clinic run to support the surrounding communities, working alongside Stanhope Community Centre, Chandos Junior School and Vineyard Church. This encourages local residents to venture into education, training and future employment .
COMMUNITY
Networkfour is a charity that has grown out of a desire to see deprived and vulnerable young people given the chance to see hope and transformation in their lives. We aim to establish networks of compassion within the community, offering individuals the chance to access and find the tools they need to build a foundation towards a brighter future. Practically this comes about in a variety of ways.
NETWORKFOUR Networkfour has teamed up with Business In the Community, Bournville College, West Midlands Police and Inspire to Independance to deliver an exciting West Midlands Social Enterprise that will provide hospitality training to serve our community. This exciting development and training centre will offer up to 30 apprentice opportunities for young people aged 16-24 years old, undertaking the day-to-day running of the hospitality and catering requirements of the ‘Tally Ho’ West Midlands Police Training centre. It will also support and help establish a number of small catering businesses and create employment opportunites for others.
FOOD
NETWORKFOUR The heart of Networkfour Change is to get alongside hard to reach individuals and give them a chance for change. We hope to positively reach young ofenders and vulnerable adults to access education, training and employment. Primarily this is achieved through one-to-one mentoring with a focus on helping participants see past the negativity from the world that has so ofen held them back and realise their potential.
CHANGE
THE ADAVU At The Adavu Project, we believe that each and every human being is a person of value and potential, not a commodity to be bought and sold. The Adavu Project is working with local and national partners to develop support for men and women who have experienced exploitation and trafficking, to enable them to take small steps towards a better future. We also provide training that aims to help church, faith and community groups in the West Midlands to be aware of the main issues around human trafficking.
PROJECT
NIGHTSTOP Network Nightstop Birmingham is a scheme which helps to prevent young people from falling into the downward cycle of homelessness, providing a safety net at a moment of great vulnerability. When a young person is on the verge of becoming homeless, the frst few nights are massively important. Often, accomodation cannot be found within this small timeframe. This is where Nightstop can help. It provides safe emergency overnight accommodation in the homes of trained volunteer host families, to young people aged 16-25 who are at the point of becoming homeless. Accommodation is offered on a night at a time basis until more permanent and appropriate accommodation can be found. Young people access the scheme after being referred by a youth or homelessness agency across the county. We currently have around a dozen volunteer hosts which is fantastic! But we are looking to expand to a team of around 50 which would enable us to cover the needs of the Birmingham/ Solihull area. So if you think you could provide a room for at least 1 night a month or would simply like to know more then please get in touch.
There are currently real opportunities for you to positvely impact vulnerable people’s lives, and your time and support will make a real difference. You can become a host family, prayer supporter, driver, mentor, job-support coach or support us financially. We need your support to reach many more lives. To fnd out more go to www.networkfour.org or call the office on 0121 622 1922 or mobile 07793914440.

Because our church community is growing we are looking to find a larger premises to enable the life and ministry of the church to expand. On a typical Sunday morning nearly every available room is used and we don’t have much space to grow. Network House is a currently a hub for so much activity in the church and is used around 70-80 hours a week . The vision however can’t be contained to one place, that’s why we place so much emphasis on cells, communities and other ministries. A larger premises will act as a strong hub to serve the vision for the whole church going forward.
The Call to Men
MEN
Breakfast & Teaching
Saturday 4 February & 14 April 2012 @ Network House Joshua 1:9 ‘... be strong and courageous do not be frightened, ans do not be dismayed, for the Lord you God is with you wherever you go’ The call to all men, awakening the warrior within! Worship and teaching, with a good hearty breakfast for men, will be taking place throughout the year. We are living in dark and difficult times where Christian men, face many pressures. The call is for men, young and old to be the men that God has destined them to be.
who in the face of adversity stood their ground for what they truly valued. They knew what was worth fighting for and in the face of opposition they demonstrated courage and overcame. The format of the semniars will include an overview of David’s life, his minghty men and the battles they won as well as looking at the life of Jesus and the call to discipleship.
We can learn from the men in the Bible
We also know that church is called to “seek the peace and prosperity of the city”. We are to pray and work for its well being and the welfare of its inhabitants (Jeremiah 29:7). This vision of transformation encompasses all of life: the spiritual, relational and physical realm. We want to play our part by developing all the communities we are in as well as being catalysts for employment and training. This term we are in discussions with senior members from the City Council about redeveloping a derelict property in the close proximity to Network House. The idea would
be to create a excellent cultural destination, significantly improving the physical environment in this part of Birmingham. We need God’s provision in so many ways, so we are calling you to pray every step of the way in this adventure of following God together.

SOCIALS Youth is the best age group in the church :) We love the church, we love having fun and we love each other! There are a few things that define us such as going to DTI and Network Camp but what we’re really about is serving the church, being friends to each other and learning about our awesome God.
These range from movie nights, to dancing, to pizza nights, you name it, we do it! We sometimes do single-sex socials to really build strong friendships. It’s the best way to bring your friends along to youth; it’s easy and they’ll definitely enjoy it.
CELL We’re the biggest cell in the whole of the church! Boom!!! We meet every second Friday from 7.30 to 9.30pm. We worship, pray, learn and eat cake! Youth cell is for everyone in youth and sometimes we split into age groups to talk about different things, so that we can discuss things with people of our own age group.
NETWORK CAMP This happens about once a year and it’s an opportunity to pray, worship and have fun overnight. We arrive at church on Friday night and we camp over until Saturday morning, We go to sleep at about 4am just to make sure we maximize our time together! We all come out totally buzzed and we learn loads about God, prayer and the Bible and the work of the holy spirit.
SERVING On the first Sunday of the month all of the youth serve the church in some way. There are now so many youth serving in kids work that Zara can’t accept any more! It’s fantastic seeing so many red t-shirted youth upstairs! Other members of the youth serve doing on the welcome, media and worship teams as well as other areas of church life, so look out for us!
p16 p12
On week 3, we go upstairs to have Adam Pipe teach through the bible. We’ve just done a bible series on the armour of God, and Adam is fantastic because he relates it to modern day life. It’s great having a mix of being downstairs and upstairs because we get to learn in lots of different ways.
WORSHIP We do worship at cell and this is really valuable; It is the youth leading worship for the youth. Some of us are being trained to be worship leaders, a great opportunity to grow in God and to serve the church. We love all styles of music and we think the newer and cooler the better!

FRIENDS We are all best friends in our youth. We have a huge range of different people and different ages but we all get along really well. When new people come to youth, it may feel quite intimidating because we’re all so close, but we really work hard at making them feel included and soon enough they feel like family.
We spend a whole weekend with other Vineyard Church youth groups and last year there were about 300 youth there. It is amazing worshiping and learning with so many other youth. However, we return absolutely exhausted! We come back with millions of ideas though and we all deepen of our connection with God.
DEAD ANT This was introduced a few years ago and it is so funny! When Jake calls “dead ant”, we all drop to the floor, arms and legs in the air, looking like dead ants. If you’re the last to fall or if you don’t do it at all, there is a forfeit which the rest of the youth decide!
GROWTH Growth is a big part of youth, we want to get bigger and bigger! We want to reach out and help other people know about God. We want to take up the whole of the right hand side of the church. We’re already moving back!
Discovery Zone is the children’s ministry at Vineyard Network Church. As a church we believe that children are the church of today as well as the church of tomorrow and therefore they play an important role in the life of the church. The vision of Discovery Zone is: Putting Jesus first (Point up) Getting to know God better together (Thumbs up)
Showing our friends how to live God’s way (Open hands)
Living a life full of God’s power (Jazz hands) There are six different age appropriate groups in Discovery Zone: • Parent and Baby Room: 0-18 months – S3 • LaunchPad: 18 months- 3 years – S1 • Rockets: 3 – 5 years – F3 • Explorers: 5-7 years – F1 & F2 • GForce: 7-9 years – F1 & F2 • Voyagers: 9-11 years – F1 & F2

Making contact:
All that we do in Discovery Zone is based around our vision and the Parent –Partnership Agreement. We are very aware that parents have the ultimate responsibility to raise their children in such a way, that when they are old enough they can make their own decision to follow Jesus. Our prayer is that every child chooses to follow Jesus and that they will never turn their back on that decision. We want to partner with parents in seeing their child(ren) becoming followers of Jesus. We therefore commit to: • Pray for you and your children • Practically follow the vision of Discovery Zone • Personally treat your children as individuals and to learn about their needs, desires and giftings • Praise God and your children We invite you to: • Pray for us • Practically find out what has happened in Discovery Zone • Personally let us know the ups and downs in your children’s lives • Praise God for the blessing your children are Practically One of the things we invite you all to do is to find out what has happened for the children in Discovery Zone. We are aware that not all children can actively communicate this and some just forget. So we have started a termly booklet for the over 5s and a weekly sheet for the under 5s to take home which will help you as parents follow up what has gone on on a Sunday and to help bring the message into everyday life. In the under 5s as a team, we are really enjoying watching friendships develop between the children. It is part of “getting to know God better together”. We see babies recognising each other and stopping

In the Parent Partnership we commit to pray for your children. We make a habit of trying to pray at the start and end of every session. You’ll see us all in our red and blue Tshirts coming down to pray at 10:10am before the morning service. Do come and join us and all the others who faithfully pray for the service. We want to see God move in all areas of our to serve. Watch out for stories in the months to children’s lives and join their parents in praying come of how the prayers of the church have made specifically for the children’s needs, so we have a difference. PRAY
their friends crying, 2 year olds encouraging their friends, by name, to participate and the 4 year olds being so excited to see each other. It is community in action! Recently, I heard of a lady who encouraged her children to ask God every day questions to help them get to know Him better, like “What’s your favourite colour?” and “What game do you want to play?”. Her point was that so often we jump into the deep stuff with God when He is also a God of fun so let’s get to know him on all levels. So we asked the 5-11s and team leaders, what game does God want to play with you and why? The response was beautiful and staggering, all completely natural and unforced; everyone was obviously moved. Children who said that God never speaks to them heard from God and so I thought you’d like to hear some of the things God said to the children and helpers
that day. But before I do, why don’t you ask God “What game does he want to play with you and why?” • Hide and Seek – Because I can’t hide from God • Keys under a chair – Because God can do anything – i.e. he can get the keys without making them jangle • Football – Because God wants to have fun with us • Twister- Because God can untwist us from any situation we get into • Stuck in the mud – Because there is no problem God can’t unstick • Tig – Because God loves watching me do things I’m good at • Liar Dice – I can’t lie to God, he knows what I’m thinking • Port and Starboard – Because even when life seems crazy, God knows where he’s going

cell groups So what’s the big deal about cell groups? Being involved in genuine community is at the heart of what it means to follow Jesus and to be in this church. We’re called to love God and love one another. One of the ways we facilitate this is through our cell groups and communities. We look to reach out to friends and neighbourhoods, deepen our friendships and care for one another and in the process grow stronger in our faith. Community is about noticing. Noticing what’s going on in your neighbourhood or in a person’s life. Noticing what a person likes or dislikes, noticing what’s happened in a person’s day or week. It’s being aware enough to care, to encourage, to be there. We’ve seen that people grow best when they’re in consistent relationship and community with others. The first thing Jesus did when he started his ministry on earth was to start a small group. His disciples were friends who prayed together and laughed together. They shared meals and they shared their lives. We want everyone who is part of our church family to know they belong and be around people who can help them grow. Our cells are often grouped together in cell communities. These groups meet on the 4th Sunday in each month, community sunday. In a large and growing church like ours the communities are small enough to care yet big enough to make a difference locally. The building blocks of healthy communities are new cell groups. Intentional planting and development
of cells and communities is our best way of reaching out to our neighbourhoods across the city. What’s next? If you’re not in a cell...... get involved. The first thing we encourage you to do is find one. We don’t “assign” people to groups but will do all we can to help you find one that you’ll relate to. Maybe you’ve got questions about something you’ve read in the bible, or what it means to follow Jesus. In a cell you can talk things through with others who understand your questions and are for you. If you’re in a cell step up! What can you do to serve others in the group? Whats next for you as you grow in your faith? Could you host the group or invite people over for a meal? Can you commit to pray for your friends in cell each day? Maybe you’ve thought about starting a new group. We need to plant many new cells this year and we always offer training and ongoing support to all our group leaders. We also need teams who can work together to plant new groups together. If your a leader, pray and ask God “what’s next” for your group. Could you help with planting a new group? What does God have in mind as you follow him and seek to express the cell values? What can you thank God for and what qualities does God want to develop in you group?

ROGERS
How long have you been a trustee? I’ve been a trustee for 3 years now and have been coming to the Vineyard for 16 years. What it the role of the trustee from your perspective? As a trustee I want to be able to help take care of the more practical matters to do with running a church and allow the pastoral staff to get on with their work, which is the whole reason the church is here in the first place. Those practicalities range from checking the chairs we sit on every week do not collapse, making sure we are compliant with the latest charity legislation and planning the budget for next year. What’s your day job and what particular experience do you bring to the role? I have worked for Jaguar Land Rover as a development engineer for the last 16 years. During that somewhat turbulent period we have had 3 parent companies (BMW, Ford and Tata). We have worked with quite a few other car manufacturers and been though a number of peaks and troughs. As a result I have experienced a whole raft of work situations and emotions, not to mention languages and cultures. I am able to bring some of this to the trustee role.
What’s good about being a trustee? It involves working with a great bunch of people and learning all the time. I really value their wisdom and experience in other fields of work. I enjoy the challenge of getting involved in different areas to my work and working towards goals that I can align myself with completely. What would you say to those who give to church? Thank you for your generous support. As the church gets no other funding other than that given by its members, your help is invaluable in allowing us to be the church that God has called us to be. Your generosity is key in helping to bring the kingdom of God to be more of a reality in Birmingham. What would you say to those who haven’t started giving? I would urge them to think and pray about the opportunity that giving brings to share in the spread of the gospel through the work of our church.
