From the SHA Office

Marilyn Charlton, General Manager

July 10, 2016 was the date of the Saskatchewan Hereford Association Annual General meeting that was held at Prairieland Park, Saskatoon, Sk. There continues to be a positive interest in the Hereford breed in our province and this has been seen in the strength of the fall production sales and spring bull sales.

The new Breeder Directory is completed and has been distributed at the SHA annual meeting, Bonanza and the field days this summer. Thanks to all of the breeders who supported the directory. If you have not got your copy I will have them available at the booth during Agribition. Stephen Myer and I had the opportunity to attend Bonanza and the Canadian Hereford Association annual general meeting at Olds, Alberta in August. We were also part of the Marketing Committee and the Show Committee meetings that are held during Bonanza as well. Congratulations to Doug Mann, Swift Current, Sk who was elected Canadian Hereford Association President and Albert Rimke, Oak Lake, MB who was elected Vice President. Nels Nixdorff, Airdrie, AB was re-elected as Pedigree Chairman. The new executive term will take effect on January 1, 2017. Congratulations to Dick and Lorraine Braun, Braun Ranch, who were presented with their 50 year pin by CHA Board member Murray Andrews at their annual Ranch Ready Bull Sale held in March. James Blakley of Consul, Sk purchased lot 43 - BR 126W Dandy Girl 182C for $5,000 at the sale and the funds were donated to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. This marked Braun’s 40th year of ranching in Simmie and the first year for the sale to be held at the ranch. STARS Air Ambulance received $11,000+ from the fundraising pony at Carlrams Ranching Ltd. Bull Sale. Thanksto Hillsvale Colony, Fenton Hereford Ranch and private donations for their generous support! Cattle Call - October 2016

The highway sign is up! Watch for the sign as you are driving on highway #1 (north side), 5 miles east of Chaplin, Sk. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Walter Bieber on his passing. We send our condolences to the Horn family on the passing of Dale Horn. The Saskatchewan Hereford Association will be again hosting the National Hereford Show at Agribition. Judges for the show will be Dawn and Lee Wilson of Bashaw, Alberta. Red Coat Classic tickets are on sale, so if you would like to purchase your ticket early or you will not be able to attend, just give the SHA office a call. You do not have to be in attendance to win. In July, Agribition announced the hiring of their new Chief Executive Officer Chris Lane. Chris grew up with an agricultural background in Northern Alberta and has over a decade experience in leading teams and organizations. Chris previously held the position of Senior Producer at CBC. We look forward to getting to know Chris and working with him. Enjoy a safe and successful fall show and sale season and we hope to see you at the Hereford Show at Agribition! Until next time ....

SHA President’s Report -

Stephen Myer

I would like to start off by introducing myself to all of you Cattle Call readers that may not know me. My name is Stephen Myer and I have recently been elected as the President of the SHA. My wife Chrsitine, our three children, and I run a herd of 250 purebred cows, half Hereford and half Angus, North East of Maidstone, SK under the banner of Standard Hill Livestock. I am a second generation Hereford breeder and admire the breed for its fertility, docility, and hardiness. I attended the University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture where I received a degree majoring in Animal Science. I volunteer with 4-H, as a leader to our local beef club, and on the purebred beef committee for Lloydminster Stockade Round-Up. Almost ten years ago I became involved with the North West SK Hereford Club and shortly thereafter became a rep from that organization to the provincial Hereford Association, and I now have been President for both. Thank you to my fellow board members for electing me and to outgoing President Dale Shillington for his efforts for the Association. We have many exciting events coming up in the province. The fall production sale run will soon begin. This is your opportunity to accelerate your breeding program, be it purebred or commercial, by selecting seedstock from our most progressive breeders. I know the work that goes into these sales and I commend my fellow breeders for their efforts and wish them success. One of the best places to see large groups of Hereford cattle is at Canadian Western Agribition. Annually there are more than 250 head of Hereford cattle on display in the halter show plus more in “the Yards” and Bull Pen Alley in the commercial barn. The SHA also hosts the Red Coat Classic show at CWA, which is always exciting for the winners, and an important fundraiser for our provincial association. It’s no secret that the Hereford breed is gaining back some clout in the cattle industry. You should try to attend some Hereford events to see why. Check out Cattle Call or visit our webpage saskhereford.com for an up to date schedule. We have a few items of interest from the provincial board. We are looking to create some learning opportunities for young Hereford breeders by creating our own mentorship program. This is a newly tasked initiative that is still in planning stages and we would entertain any suggestions before rolling it out next year. In an effort to improve attendance at our provincial annual meeting we are looking for suggestions from the membership in regards to time of year. We hope to survey all the members on this so keep it on your mind. The cattle market seems to be in a constant downturn as of late. We knew this would come after the records set in the recent past, however, we were hoping there would be a few more of the fruitful years no doubt. The current trend just serves as a reminder that things rarely stay that easy for long. The primary producer is only one part of the beef industry and people need to keep buying beef. The things we control most are our own inputs so keep your pencils sharp and be prepared to take the opportunities given. With feed grain prices currently lower than I can ever remember it might be a perfect year to background some calves and sell into a bullish market at a later date.

The O’Connor’s ... Supporting Juniors! Rob and Dawn O’Connor have been farming together for about 17 years under the name of Lone Pine Cattle Services. They have always recognized the important role 4-H and the Junior Hereford Association play in providing positive experiences to future Hereford enthusiasts. Rob and Dawn both participated in the 4-H program for 11 years each. As a junior Hereford member, Rob was a Bonanza chairman and Canadian Junior Hereford Association President. He won Bonanza Grand Aggregate award three times and Bonanza Champion female once. Dawn participated in light horse 4-H and was awarded High Point horse and rider.

18 Page 18

Rob and Dawn have always cultivated new talent. The people they hire to help at shows generally consist of young people and a couple of experienced fitters. They enjoy working with young people especially those new to the Hereford breed. They enjoy providing them an opportunity to show cattle and to gain knowledge. Rob and Dawn take great satisfaction watching youth who started with a basic interest in cattle then blossom into great young show people and fitters.

Before they had children, they had discussed organizing a youth event like a fitting camp. They intended to organize an event to advance youth in our industry but with two jobs and a growing herd, it was impossible to carve out the time. When their daughter Lexie turned five years old and started to show real interest in the cattle, they made the decision and commitment to reviving the Saskatchewan Junior Hereford Bee-A-Rama! They wanted to give kids, even small ones, the opportunity to try showing cattle in a relaxed atmosphere. Dawn started the first year with sponsorship inquiries. Rob understood well how to approach companies so he helped develop a sponsorship package which was very well received. Collecting sponsorships and budget planning is a large part of the event’s work. In the first years, Dawn had a fair amount of corporate support but recently most of sponsorship comes from fellow cattle breeders. Everyone who has supported the show financially or as a volunteer, does it for the same reason ... the kids!

The first Beef-A-Rama took place in 2011 with 15 exhibitors and 34 head of cattle. Rob and Dawn hosted the show that year and expecting the show to grow, partnered with the Glenavon Agricultural Society for the next three years. The show returned to Rob and Dawn’s farm in 2015. The 2016 edition of the show had 47 exhibitors and 91 head of cattle. The show has grown steadily through the years. They have had some great times and some exceptional cattle have shown here. Many Western Canadian Hereford Champions have started the summer show run at BeefA-Rama! The show has created a buzz in the youth cattle circuit. It’s beginning to attract youth cattle enthusiasts from outside the breed who have begun to invest in Herefords because there is a place they can participate with them at a youth level. Recently while Rob was exhibiting cattle in Prince Albert, Sk, he had three Simmental families ask about bow they can participate at the show!

Cattle CattleCall Call- -October October2016 2016

Dawn and Rob say its been their absolute pleasure organizing and hosting the show for the sixth year and look forward to many more. They want to also recognize the commitment from the sponsors and volunteers. They feel that they could not do it without the financial support from the sponsors. Every sponsorship and donation is extremely important to the event. It’s this commitment that provides the ability to purchase the beautiful banners, the large custom t-shirt order and all the prizes and treats which makes their event THE best junior show around. Thanks to our incredible sponsors! The support of volunteers on show day needs to be recognized as well. They have friends who lend them panels, help prepare academic entries for judging, serve food, mark cattle placings, marshal cattle, ring men and of course the judge. It is a very full day and all this help makes the day run smoothly and safely for the kids. Not only do they support juniors, but Rob has been instrumental in organizing the Canadian Red White and Black Bull Sale when the Regina Bull Show and Sale discontinued and the Hereford Harvest Sale in the fall selling females. Both of these events have provided a venue for those breeders not connected with a production or bull sale of their own. Thank you Rob and Dawn for your commitment to our juniors and the Hereford breed here in Saskatchewan!

Beef-A-Rama has cattle classes, showmanship, grooming and bred and owned classes. The show also has public speaking, cattle judging, art work, photography and literature classes too. The exhibitor who accumulates the most points in all classes wins the Grand Aggregate custom trophy belt buckle.

g o t o d e o ! e d

All sponsorships and donations are spent on the show. The majority of the expenses are carefully planned and dedicated to things such as t-shirts, banners, ribbons and buckle. Some of the sponsorships are specifically ear marked for participation prize “Bucket of Fun” where EVERY exhibitor (big or small) gets a pail full of prizes, treats, candy and cattle supplies. This truly is a highlight for the organizers and exhibitors!! Not everyone is going to win a banner or take home the buckle but everyone goes home with something to remember the day.

100 days away and we are gearing up for another great show. We are excited about the new International Trade Centre that is under construction and is on schedule. We will be using the building for this year’s event and are looking forward to its Grand Opening in 2017.

That project will mean a few changes to Agribition 2016 but we assure all of our stakeholders that it is “business as usual”, and CWA will again be the world-class event our exhibitors and guests have grown to expect. We also have been upgrading our existing facilities to ensure that Agribition continues to be the “can’t miss” cattle show of the year. We look forward to seeing you here in November for another full slate of shows, sales and entertainment. For an update on the programs and entry information, visit www.agribition.com or call our office at 306-565-0565. Stewart Stone, President

44 Annual Honor Roll The headquarters of Elberfeld Polled Herefords Farm are located on a quarter section of land three miles north of Rosthern, Sk. homesteaded by Erwin’s grandfather, Wilhelm K. Lehmann in 1894. There have been cattle on this farm for 122 years. In about 1936, Erwin’s father, Herbert S. Lehmann, the youngest of seven brothers, took over the homestead. In 1950, Herb bought his first polled Hereford cow from H.H. Henschel of Rosthern. At the time of Herb’s death in 1992, every one of the purebred cattle he owned traced back to that first cow, Mischief Domino A32nd. Sometime between 1950 and 1960 the farm was officially named Elberfeld Polled Hereford Farm and registered as such. The name was chosen from the local school Purebred Honourees district, Elberfeld, which Wilhelm had been instrumental in establishing and naming. Erwin & Linda Lehmann Elberfeld Polled Herefords In 1972, with his parents talking about selling and no one interested in moving home, Herb’s son Erwin and his wife Linda decided to resign from his teaching position In Leask and move home. They have been there ever since. Another reason to move home was to farm and to raise their family on the farm.

C

c q b a a M p c

Erwin married Linda Blixrud from Sandwith, Sk. in 1968. They have four children. Troi and Jackie Lehmann have three boys and live near Hague, Sk.; Amber and Collin Neudorf have a daughter and three sons and live near Rosthern, Sk.; Marc and Arlyss Lehmann have two daughters and two sons and live near Lashburn, Sk.; and Kris and Maureen Lehmann have two daughters and one son and live near Vermilion, AB. All of their children own cattle and are involved in the Elberfeld operation. Ever since the inception, Elberfeld has been a purebred and commercial herd. Numbers have been very high. The maximum number of purebred animals at one time was probably higher than 100 but more often around half that number. Erwin was a leader of the Rosthern 4-H Beef Club for many years, besides his own children being in 4-H, many town kids also had 4-H calves out at Elberfeld. Though they have shown occasionally, even at Agribition, their goal is to produce good, solid, functional breeding stock for the commercial producer. They used to sell bulls as yearlings but with later calving, now they sell mostly two year olds. They also sell bred heifers every fall. Erwin says that over 75 percent of their breeding stock sales go to repeat customers, often having a list of interested buyers in advance. In 1969, Elberfeld had a downsizing sale. Jim Postnikoff of Marcelin bought several cows including Elberfeld Wilhelmina the mother of Dynamo the bull of Jim Postnikoff and Bobby Hull’s fame. Elberfeld had Reserve Champion Bull at Saskatoon Bull Show and Sale in 1981 with Elberfeld Lemky 8L, a bull way ahead of his time. Over the years Elberfeld has purchased many herd sires from Remitall as well as other polled breeders. Some of the best as far as Erwin is concerned were: Remitall Majestic from Highway, Remitall Baron from Keynote, Remitall Stampeder from “stick” STLBRK Gilead, Remitall Rusty from Justamere Brigadere, Harvie Revolution from Online purchased from Harvie Ranching, WLB Shepherd from Haroldsons WLB Mutumbo from Bill Biglieni, Beau Mode 23T by Tizhome Beau Mode from Powell Bros. Guernsey, Elberfeld Zetterberg 8Z from Neon (home raised). Because of the drought in 2002, some cattle were sent to Marc and Arlyss (Top 50 Livestock). They manage most of Erwin’s purebred cow herd. Most of the other cows are at Troi and Jackie’s. Some cattle are at Watrous and Marcelin on lease. At weaning most of the heifers and bulls are brought to Elberfeld where they are wintered and marketed.

1950 to 2016 makes 66 years of polled Herefords. With all four children and their spouses out on their own but still involved with Elberfeld, along with 14 grandchildren all being involved with cattle in some way. Ready and willing and able to help add “excitement” to the operation maybe someone will take over and give Erwin and Linda a rest. Erwin says he’s already getting the help, but not ready for retirement. “Excitement” is good and with those 14 grandkids there is no shortage of it. Cattle Call Call - October 2016 Cattle

The main yard of Allan and Margaret Chisholm farm at Turtleford, Sk. was originally settled in 1907 by Allan’s father Earl. Earl had come out west from Paris, Ontario with his father and two brothers. Their first cattle were straight Horned Hereford and were brought in between 1912 -1914. Allan married local girl Margaret in 1970 and they took over his father’s six quarter farm shortly after in 1972. They were blessed with four children, Tammy in 1971, Sherry in 1974, Priscilla in 1984 and Malcolm in 1987. They girls are now in Saskatoon or Sherwood Park and Malcolm has become involved in the farm full time. The Chisholm’s have always made the change to keep the operation working for them. For a time, Allan custom sprayed to make some extra money. They used to calve in Commercial Honourees - Montrose Farms February and they moved back to April, and they have moved from horned to polled Allan & Margaret Chisholm cattle. They have dabbled with other breeds of cattle but always came back to the docile Herefords that one person could work. A few years ago they made the tough choice to reduce their herd of 120 cows down to 30. The farm now encompasses 26 quarters of land, of which are three of the original quarters from when the family moved into the country in 1907. They still believe in breeding their heifers as two year olds, standing by the importance of calving ease that first year. There are thoughts of getting back to a larger number of cows, possibly purebreds, and of course Herefords. Allan remembers back when he was younger, horned Hereford bulls had been bought from George Olding at Turtleford, many of the Wetmore line. There were also polled bulls bought later on from a prominent breeder at Spiritwood, Tony Myer at Maidstone and Ted Morin of Edam and Mac Creech at Lloydminster. They always kept their best home raised heifers and also purchased some groups from Morin’s and Myer’s. There have been many changes in the farm over the years but a few things remain constant. The fourth generation is working on the Chisholm farm and they have had Hereford cattle for more than 100 years. 2016 Young Gun Award Marc and Arlyss own and operate Top 50 Livestock located eight miles north of Lashburn, Sk. Both Marc and Arlyss grew up on Polled Hereford farms. Marc is the son of Linda and Erwin Lehmann of Rosthern, Sk., Elberfeld Polled Hereford Farm and Arlyss is the third daughter of Doreen and Murray Coolidge of Lashburn, Sk., Coolidge Bros. Polled Herefords. Marc and Arlyss were both 4-H members for a number of years and also registered polled Hereford cattle years past. Marc works with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as an Animal Health Inspector and Arlyss helps her parents in the catering business. Their children, Paige, Blayde, Jaryn and Jett are all a huge part of the cattle operation. The kids are hands-on helpers in everything that happens at the farm: chores, halter 2016 Young Gun Award breaking, branding, baling and moving cattle to name a few. The kids have been Marc & Arlyss Lehmann - Top 50 involved in 4-H for seven years, have shown at summer fairs, junior shows and will be Livestock attending Bonanza in Olds this summer. At the fall shows, if they aren’t displaying their own cattle, they can be found at numerous other breeders stalls lending a hand where needed and hoping that someone will ask them to fit a leg or show an animal. Along with their four children, they manage a cow herd of both purebred Hereford and commercial cows. Marc and Arlyss enjoy showing cattle in the fall, showing primarily at the Lloydminster Stockade Roundup. In the fall of 2015, they were awarded Champion Horned Hereford Female with Big Gully V9 Venerable 320A as a two year old pair with her heifer calf at foot. Paige and grandma Lehmann purchased her from Big Gully Farm as a heifer calf. They were invited to attend Agribition in Regina as a RBC Supreme qualifier. They decided to take a total of 4 head to Regina and enter them in the National show as well. Their cattle never placed lower than a second in any class entered. They only have 16purebred cows themselves and manage the purebreds of Elberfeld Polled Hereford Farm. Although the purebred herd is small, they are of high quality. Marc and Arlyss both took the A.I. course at Lakeland College which enables them to use some of the top bulls in the breed to improve and manage the genetic and EPD profiles in their cattle. They include the use of both polled and horned genetics and are beginning to see the values in both in the quality of their calves. Besides the purebreds, they like to experiment with commercial cattle and club calf semen in hopes to raise steers for the kids to us in 4-H.

Page25 25

Cattle CattleCall Call- -October October2016 2016

All members of the family are also actively involved in both minor hockey and minor ball where Arlyss sits as the president for Lashburn minor ball. The kids are active in school sports and in their spare time they like to visit with friends and family. Over the past few years they have enjoyed attending the North West Hereford Field Day for camaraderie and fellowship with fellow Hereford enthusiasts. They are always welcome to visitors and any one of the family can tour you through the herd.

During the CHA Board meetings elections took place for President, Vice President and Pedigree Committee Chairman. Dr. Doug Mann (SK) was elected President, Albert Rimke (MB) was elected into office as the Vice President and Nels Nixdorff (AB) was re-elected as Pedigree Committee Chairman. These changes to the CHA Board Executive will take effect on January 1st 2017. During the Bonanza Banquet the Keith Gilmore Foundation (KGF) awarded over $30,000 in scholarships to CJHA members and young leaders in the beef industry. With the help of Auctioneer Bob Baylog, Baylog Auction Services, the auction raised over $23,000 to help fund future scholarships from the KGF. A special thanks to Blair-Athol Herefords, Remitall-West Polled Herefords, Braun Ranching, Harvie Ranching, YV Ranch, HerefordBreeder.net and Livestock Media Plus for your sponsorship and donations that made this auction possible. CHA News and Notes Is an animal registered? What is its registration number? A quick and easy way to tell if your animal’s registration is complete is by the unique identification number assigned to it by the CHA registry system. If that number starts with “C0” (ie: C0123456), the registration is complete and will be visible on the website under the animal inquiry tab. (This appears 24-36 hours after the registration is completed via the online system or through the office.) When you submit animal details to the office or through the online system and do not request to register the animal at that time, that animal will be given a number beginning with “W” (ie: W123456). If you apply to register the animal through the office and more information is required, it will be temporarily assigned a “?” number. Numbers beginning with “?” indicate there is more information required but once received, the animal will be processed for registration. For example, missing birth date, mating clash, semen certificate, duplicate tattoo, etc. Breeders will be sent a “Request for Information” form for any animal with a “?” number. Simply respond to the request and return the completed form to the office by fax, scan/email or by regular mail. All outstanding information must be received by the CHA in writing. Other numbers you might see could be for foreign animals. For example, a number beginning with “A” (A43214853) would be an American registration number. If you only have an American number, try including an “A” at the beginning of the number. The online system will often convert these to a Canadian number. Canadian Hereford Association DNA Testing Laboratory Update Over the past year, you may have noticed some changes in how the CHA has been dealing with DNA samples. The CHA has been involved in a project funded by the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA), along with most of the other beef breeds, to “Bio Bank” all historical DNA samples from each breed. This project will ensure that all DNA that is stored is accessible and organized for years to come. Delta Genomics of Edmonton, Alberta, was the lab selected to undertake this project. By the end of this summer, all historical Cattle CattleCall Call- -October October2016 2016

What is a MOE Show? A Mark of Excellence Show (MOE) is a Hereford Show given special status by the Canadian and Provincial Hereford Associations to promote the development of purebred Herefords through the show ring. MOE shows achieve and maintain their status by upholding specific high standards of competition, as determined by the Canadian Hereford Association. To be deemed a MOE show, a show must maintain a minimum of 20 head participating in the show, the identities of which are individually verified before entering the show ring. In the ring, exhibitors are expected to conform to the required dress standard of a red shirt or jacket. The CHA provides assistance to Fair boards and Hereford Show Committees with event organization and promotion of MOE shows. MOE shows are designated annually in February and include the Canadian National Junior Show Bonanza and three National shows - the Canadian, Western and Eastern National shows. Each province has its own designated MOE shows for which the same MOE show rules apply. Animals shown at a MOE show are awarded points based on their placings, allowing the association to recognize outstanding animals, based on performance at these shows. Individual animals that have accumulated 30 points are eligible to receive a Silver MOE Award. Dams whose progeny have accumulated 35 points may receive a Gold Dam Award and Sires whose progeny have accumulated 50 points may receive a Gold Sire Award. However, Please note that for shows with 75 head or fewer shown, only half points are awarded for each respective placing. Once an animal has the required points, a recognition award may be purchased from the CHA and presented at association events.

THE All-Star Breeders This program is to recognize those breeders who fully comply with the THE (Total Herd Evaluation) mandate of complete and accurate reporting of performance data on their animals. Listed are the Saskatchewan breeders. Cattle Cattle Call Call -- October October 2016 2016

Hereford DNA samples will be housed at Delta Genomics in this Bio Bank. The CHA has also been involved in a federally funded genotyping grant. This grant subsidizes the cost of genotyping an animal. The CHA gets an annual allotment of funds from this grant and has been passing those savings along to its membership. In 2016-2017 the CHA plans to randomly upgrade over 2,000 animals that have been submitted for basic parentage by breeders, to a low-density genomic panel, at no extra charge to the breeder. These animals will receive parentage verification, genetic abnormality profiles and Genomically Enhanced EPDs.

Honour Roll

Christian (Spence) Sutter

Spence Sutter was born in Arcola, Saskatchewan January 6th , 1950 - the second of five siblings. His grandfather, Christian B. Sutter arrived from Minnesota in 1906 to file a land claim and start farming the virgin prairie. The First Herefords were purchased in 1919 and in 1926, ten polled Herefords were added to the herd. After returning from WWII, Spence’s father Christian Tyndall took over and named the farm Aqua Hollow Polled Herefords. The family has been farming the same land for 110 years and Polled Herefords have been an important part of the operation for 90 continuous years. Spence’s grandchildren are the fifth generation of Sutters to live on their land. Spence was always interested in the farm and was active in 4-H as a youngster. After completing a Business and Commerce degree at the University of North Dakota in 1972, he spent a brief stint at an accounting firm before returning home to farm with his brothers. On December 31, 1973, Spence married Janice Fraser, and together they expanded the cow herd when his brothers decided to go straight grain. They raised four children and have two grandchildren. Spence was active in many shows and sales including the Regina Bull Sale and Agribition, the Southeast Saskatchewan Hereford Sale, the Southern Supreme Sale, the Sale of Distinction, Premium 7 and the Distaff Production Sale with Cleggs and Johnsons. He has found success in the show ring with many local and provincial champions. He has also judged many 4-H and purebred cattle shows throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Spence was one of the founding directors that helped to initiate the All-Breed Test Center north of Regina, Sk. Spence has been active for many years on various Hereford boards and committees. He has been President of the Southeast Saskatchewan Hereford Zone, Board member for the Saskatchewan Hereford Association and Canadian Hereford Association and was the Canadian Hereford Association President in 1997. He was always a strong presence at any and all Hereford activities, lending a hand wherever needed at events and sales in southeast Saskatchewan. Spence hosted many tours, including the 2012 World Hereford Conference Tour and has exported both cattle and semen to numerous countries including England, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republuic, Japan, South Africa, Australia and the United States. In addition to his involvement in the Hereford Community, Spence is also deeply involved in his local community. He has been a part of many large projects including chairing the local Recreation Board. Spence was President of the Minor Hockey board as well as coach and was instrumental in bringing artificial ice to the local rink. He was also on the United Grain Growers board, is the current Rural Municipality of Antler #61 Councillor and he chairs the Redvers and District Health Foundation.

New National Check-Off study shows increased benefits to Canadian Cattle producers The Canadian Beef Cattle Research, Market Development and Promotion Agency (the Agency), in partnership with Canfax Research Services is pleased to release a study evaluating the economic benefits from the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off. The study, prepared by Dr. James Rude and Dr. Ellen Goddard, is an update on the 2010 Cranfield Study which had reported results ahead of the 2010 merge of the Beef Information Centre, Canadian Beef Export Federation and the National Check-Off Agency. The new study reports that on average from 2011/12 to 2013/14, every check-off dollar invested in national research and marketing activities resulted in a benefit cost ratio of 14:1 or $14 of benefit for Canadian cattle producers. This is up from the $9 average between 2005 and 2008. In addition, the average benefit cost ratio grew steadily between 2011 and 2014. This implies that despite positive benefits, there has been under-investment in research and marketing activities for the Canadian beef cattle industry. Newly elected Agency Chair Linda Allison is confident that setting goals based on the study results will ensure that the industry moves forward together. "The 14:1 benefit seen from each National Check-Off dollar confirms the value of producer investment," said Allison. "However, with the declining purchasing power of the National Check-Off and reduced marketings in recent years, under-investment is evident. It is imperative that we continue to find ways to optimize the return for our producers across the country." The change in benefit cost ratio for research, overseen by the Beef Cattle Research Council dropped from $46 to $34.50 during 2005 to 2008, while marketing, managed by Canada Beef, had a benefit cost ratio of $13.50, up from $7.55 in the previous study.

34 Page 34

Generally, an inverse relationship exists between the amount of money spent on a promotion or research activity and its marginal benefit cost ratio. It is this diminishing marginal return that helps explain why as investment has increased for research over the past five years, that the

benefit cost ratio has declined, just as marketing dollars have declined and the benefit cost ratio has increased. While the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-off provides the core industry funding for research and marketing programs, it does not fully cover the costs of all programs and activities. Supplementary funding is obtained by leveraging the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-off, attracting on average $3 for every $1 for research and $1 for every $1 for marketing between 2011/12 and 2013/14. Melinda German, General Manager of the Agency, spoke highly of the research and marketing organizations responsible for investing check-off dollars. "The work that the Beef Cattle Research Council and Canada Beef carry out, continues to show great returns for our industry," German said. "By ensuring a sustained and increasing benefit cost ratio, we can continue to work towards common industry goals laid out in the National Beef Strategy." The Agency is dedicated to continually monitoring the benefit cost ratio of the National Check-Off through ongoing studies, and ensuring that extra value is derived from producer check-off and import levy investments. Along with the full study from Dr. Rude, the Agency and Canfax Research Services developed two supplementary documents to pinpoint the highlights of the study and how they are applicable to the Canadian beef industry. The Canadian Beef Cattle Research, Market Development and Promotion Agency manages the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off. Through the National Check-Off, Canadian beef cattle producers collectively invest in research, market development and promotion to achieve the industry’s longterm vision of a dynamic and profitable Canadian beef industry, with Canadian high-quality beef products recognized as the most outstanding by Canadian and world customers.

We are pleased to announce that the ninth annual T Bar Invitational golf tournament was again, an overwhelming success, surpassing the 2015 tournament and raising over $50,000.00 for youth in the beef industry. Eight national junior breed associations, representing nearly 2,200 members, will reap rewards because of the generosity of sponsors. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Canadian Western Agribition, Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup, Summer Synergy, Stockade Roundup and the Young Ranchman’s All Breeds Livestock Show which all host junior interbreed events. A successful social sponsored by Alta Genetics was held on the night of June 28th at the office of T Bar C Cattle, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The next morning, golfers of all ages and skill levels took to the course for golf, fellowship, and good cheer. The day concluded with an awards banquet and presentation of the T Bar Invitational champions trophy. “We are extremely happy with this year’s event which surpassed our expectations. With the ongoing commitment of the tournament participants and sponsors we have raised over $400,000.00, which has positively impacted a great amount of youth” said Bryan Kostiuk, co-chairman of the tournament. “The tournament encompasses people from all segments of the industry as well as those who supported a great cause.” Plans for the tenth annual T Bar Invitational have begun. Watch for updates at www.tbarinvitational.com for further information on this year’s sponsors and more information on next year’s event. Traceability poised for next step: Auto tracking of cattle By Jeff Melchior

integrity, and reduce industry’s administrative burden.”

The Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) is tapping into new technology to make traceability fast and easy. Automated tracking of cattle may soon be a reality. During the coming year, the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) will be experimenting throughout the province with data loggers installed at farms, feedlots, and auction markets to track cattle as they move through the value chain. “Movement is very difficult to track, especially when animals are commingling at a feedlot, an auction market, or on farm,” said Gordon Cove, CEO of the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency, which is helping to fund the project. “If this project is successful, whenever the animal goes somewhere the data logger will be triggered, the information will go into a network, and we will see there has been animal movement. It’s pretty exciting.” The data-logging project is just one component of a larger CCIA initiative intended to prepare the beef industry for the possibility of future federal legislation that may require all industry players — including ranches that sell locally and producers importing cattle — to report animal movement from one premises to another. “We’re looking at ways to reduce the administrative burden for industry and producers with respect to animal movement data,” said Paul Laronde, tag and technology manager for CCIA and the project’s designer. “Our goal is to make the reporting process easier for producers and other industry players by using technology to increase data privacy, improve data integrity, and reduce errors.” “This is a key part of a larger, more complex traceability pro-ject underway at CCIA,” added Leigh Rosengren, a veterinarian and consultant who is the pro-ject’s lead epidemiologist. “We will be presenting an update on this research at Traceability Symposium 2016 in Calgary this November.” Currently, the cattle traceability process requires several steps before traceability info reaches the Canadian Livestock Tracking System (CLTS) database, said Laronde. “Right now, if a member of the value chain wants to report a sighted event, the individual needs to record and report the animal’s unique radio frequency identification (RFID) and the unique premises ID for the source premises with a specific date. Those three points connect and give us a sighted data event,” he said. “A sighted event records the sighting of an animal at a certain location. With enough sighted event records, we are hoping to synthesize animal movement data that will meet proposed reporting requirements, increase data

Currently, RFID readings are downloaded to a computer, imported into a spreadsheet that the CLTS database can understand, and then uploaded — a process that is complex and often very time consuming, said Laronde. “Data processing time ranges from a few minutes to six hours, depending on the number of submitted events in the CLTS database queue,” he said. “If there are any errors to the submitted data, it must be resubmitted. “Technologically, it’s a bit of a challenge if you’re not computer savvy or if you don’t have a family member or friend to help. We’re trying to make the reporting process quicker and easier to use.” The hope is the new data loggers will eliminate those headaches. The data loggers — electronic devices about the size of a deck of cards — are already being used in the petroleum industry to autonomously monitor product conditions in remote areas. The data loggers can not only send information directly to the CCIA via a cell signal but also “sorts out any garbage data and redundancy,” said Laronde. “For example, if a cow happens to stand in front of the reader for a little longer than required and you get 10 reads instead of one, the technology will sort it down to one,” he said. “If we’re successful with this pilot project, all users should have to do is switch on the reader and technology should be able to take care of the rest of the automated data collection process. “We are proposing to pull reportable data from commingling sites rather than have industry push it to CCIA.” The new system should also be more secure. “There are no third parties handling the data — it goes from the RFID readers to the CLTS database,” said Laronde. “So privacy is increased; timeliness of data reporting is increased; and the workload for the producer is hopefully reduced if, in fact, we can make this work the way we think we can.” The CCIA has contracted a Calgary-based company to develop a data logger specific to its needs and the installation process should begin this fall, he said. But there is one big challenge — lousy cell service in many rural parts of the province. “There are areas in Alberta where cellphone coverage is spotty so we’re working with more than one telecom provider to see who gives us the best coverage,” said Laronde. “We’re also experimenting with various-size antennas. “That’s another piece of the project we’re trying to figure out: Is it going to work everywhere in Alberta or just within 50 miles of Calgary?”
