UNIT 24

Martin Klimas

LO1

is a German born photographer who studied a degree in Visual Communications at Fachhochschule Dusseldorf. After graduating he has exhibited his work in Germany and abroad. He has done projets using paint and speakers, birds, smashing flower vases and dropping porcelain figurines from three meters high and most recently exploding fruit.

Klimas’s main inspriation for this project was Hans Jenny, the father of cymatics and the study of wave phenomena. To do this the paint was placed on a scrim over a speaker and music with dynamic and loads of kick to it made the paint bounce and fuse with the other colours. This picture (left) was done to the song On the Run by Pink Floyd in 2011. Aswell as paint, Klimas has used water aswell to add more of an effect to show the difference in the consistancy of the paint compared to the water, a fast shutter speed would have been used to create this effect. The composition and colour link extremely closely in this picture. The lines created by the viabrations are very funky and very caotic linking with the colours used which aren’t basic and simple. The caoticness links to the painter Jackson Pollock with his painting ‘No. 5’.

Mr Toledano

was born in London in 1968 to French Moroccan and American parents. He studied in English Literature at university but his art education came from his father, a full time artist. He says he taught himself how to scuplt, paint and photograph and edit pictures. On his website biograph he says he considers himself a conceptual artist.

This picture is from one of Mr Toledano’s photograph collections called ‘Hope & Fear’. The purpose of the collection was to explore the desires and fears of people in America. The picture (left) is a naked women covered in a boob costume. This may be showing a desire American women have to have bigger boobs or possible a fear of exposed boobs. Like most of his images, they are all portraits in this collection. The simplicity of the background and the detail of the costume contract with each other and really bring the focus to the costume, making you wantto know the meaning behind it. This photograph would have most likely been tweaked a bit to make the boobs like more realistic and the colour of the costume and the skin even. It is unique because of the approach it has taken on the topic of hope and fear.

Miss Aniela

is an English based fine art and fashion photographer. She studied English and Media at university and was sought to speak for Microsoft and offere solo shows in Europe. Her work is exhibited internationally and has been published by the likes of; NY Arts, Vogue Italia and the BBC. Always as being a photographer she has published two books.

Most of her photography on surreal fashion takes a modern spin on classical art around and just after the 16th century. The picture (left) called ‘Portrait with Pigeon and Poultry’ was taken in 2013. Using the classical art effect, this picture looks like a painting and the clothing and bird used help that effect. The composition of the photograph and the way the subject is positioned are an acurrate interpritation on the position for classical art. The colours used are very traditional and even the slight sepia layer over the picture. The main focal point would be the subjects eyes but your attention is drawn to all the detail in and around the picture. All the textures (barring the background slightly) are in focus and very detailed so your eyes are mainly drawn to that. Miss Aniela has positio the women so there is not too much head room.

Denis Rouvre

is a French photographer who specialises in portraits. He studied at École Louis Lumière in 1987. His work has been published by many newspapers and magazines, for example; Elle, GQ, Télérama and particualarly the series of photographs he took of the tsumani survivors where published in the New York Times.

Rouvre took a series of pictures in New Caledonia of the French speaking Kanak people. The main focus for this project was staring. Rourve wanted to capture the rawness of the Kanak people. None of the subjects have any real facial expression. In this photograph (left) the subject is in the centre and his eyes (the main focus for the project) are in focus which follow the basic protrait composition. The direction of light looks like it is coming from the right because there is a bit of shadow on the left side of is neck and ear. The contrast of the black background and the dark navy blue shirt the man is wearing against his white hair draw your attention to his face and then further in to his eyes. There are unique characteristics to this picture because he doesnt look like any else in the collection. There are other elderly people but none like him.

Jim

Zuckerman

is a photographer that stopped studying medical studies to pursue photography. Most of his work is exhibited in America. He teaches photography courses at schools and universities and leads photo excursions all over the world. Zuckerman has been the contributing editor for Photographic Magazin for fourty years.

Zuckerman uses contrasting colours a lot so his landscape photographs are more interesting. The dull greyness of the trees and its branchs leading out to the full, bright yellows, greens, oranges, browns and red make his photographs very interesting to look at. The photograph (left) has been cropped but thoughout the whole picture, the main focal points are on the leaf colours and the tree right-centre. The structure of the photograph isn’t to busy because space is created by the grey tree bodies. Even though the colours contrast, they arent too far apart brightness wise. If the colour of the trees where too dull and the leaves too bright, the photograph would look to minipluated and unreal but keeping the palettes close give it a more natural look but still very interesting. The photograph is part of his collection taken in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Maciej

Duczynski

is a Polish photographer born in Katowice, 1975. On his website biography he says ‘while he was studying at Technical University in Gliwice, he discovered his first passion which was travelling and a few years later, he discovered his second passion which was photography.’ He specialises in landscape photography and all his photographs are now taken digitally.

In this picture (left) Duczynski uses a wide lens to capture foreground and background interest, the water at the bottom, mountains and sky. The purpoe of having a person in the photograph is used to show the scope of the landscape and how huge the mountain is compared to a person. Duczynski did this project in black and white people it is something he was said to have liked. By using black and white you can see the difference in the colour more and the texture of the rock faces look more detailed. We can see the clear difference in the tone of the water, the difference tones on the rocks and cliffs and the shading and different tones in the clouds. Black and white imagery has more of a dramatic effect, especially on landscapes photographs (like Ansel Adams). The technique used would have been one with a small apeture.

Andreas Gursky

born January 15th 1955 is a German born visual artist known for his landscape colour photographs normally taken from a high point of view. He specialises in photographer. In 2011, one of his painting called ‘Rhein II’ sold for £2.7 million and is the most expensive photograph ever to be sold.

This picture (left) by Gursky called ‘99 Cent’ was taken in 1999 and is part of a two part photograph. The photograph is of the interior aisles ina supermarket. The photograph was digitally edited to reduce perspective. The variety of colour used in the photograph have an interesting effect on the eye because there is no exact focal point. The choice to have people in the picture generate a series of questions about the picture such as; What are they buying? Why is the picture taken in a supermarket? Why this particular supermarket? By taking the picture from a high point of view we see the overall supermarket that we would never generally never see it from. It shows all the different brands and the vast variety of different items and colours in one frame. This would be classed as a landscape image but the content is very unique.

“

As part of the unit, I had to plan and take pictures related to a theme which I chose as buildings and using a scanner called scanography, a type of digital imagery. I used a range of materials, textures and colours also backgrounds.

“

photographs wil be in black and white unless th sun and light is bright then buildings will be in colour

focusing on paterns of brick work

old & historic buildings new & mordern buildings

offices

houses factories

BUILDINGS door frames

focusing on shapes

demolished & run down buildings

My plan for my photography shoot.

This is a scan of different sized measuring jugs.

This is a scan of the bottom of a group of cake sprinkles jars.

This is a scan of the bits of fruit and vegetables.

This is a scan of a fake plant.

These two scans are both scans of different overlapping materials. This one is edited to black and white.

LO3

The picture on the left is a scan of fruit and vegetables that have been manipulated to be fuller. I have added more cucumbers and a pepper.

From the original picture of the sprinkles this is a pop art version in which I added two layers of the same format inside the original arrangement and changed the saturation.

As part of the unit, I had to plan and design a digi pak for an artist accompanied by a poster advertising the artists album.
