UNIT 24 JOURNAL
Wednesday 26th February 2014 What is a digipak?
A digipak is normally used for packaging for CDs and DVDs. Some are made out of cardboard and some have an external case and contain a paper book with a plastic holder for the actually CD inside it. It can sometimes contain multiple panels.
What are the ingredients (codes & conventions) of a digipak?
• Front cover – Album name and artist name both in bold font. So it will stand out on a store shelf and people will find it easier to see. A picture of the artist or band so even if people cant see the words, they could tell by a picture of the artist. • Back cover – A list of the songs that are on this album and who is featured in the song. Possible the time of the song. Copy write information and any other brief details if needed. • Booklet – Each of the lyrics for each song ad possible the odd picture on the page, with information about each song (producers, instruments, song writer/s). Website for artist on the last page.
Names of at least three real digipaks that you can study. (left) Rihanna - Talk That Talk
(above) Michael Jackson - This Is It
(left) Katy Perry - Teenage Dream
the picture is a gatefold section. it still links with the sweet and sugar theme and has another picture of herself because it works with the front cover. it is a seperate part of the album cover so it would be best to have a different picture. when it is opened you see the full picture.
the picture relates to the front cover very closely but is a different take on the picture because it is part of the front and back cover.
the front cover does not have Katy Perry’s name or the album title, but because you know who she is by face it is not needed. the layout and theme of the album relatesto the cute, sweet girly image that she is trying to portray on the album.
album gives off a sweet/ sugary feel to it and the album CDs stick to that theme by using one CD having a donut cover and the other one having a candy lollipop. another one of michael jacksons famous stances featuring the same internal images as the front cover.
the tracklist is on the back and the bonus tracks are seperated from the orginal ones.
the tracklist is on the black cover and the red font for the song titles compliment the pink background but also stands out and the blue background works with the sky. the blue wording are the bonus songs which seperate the normal album from the deluxe thats why it is different. this album cover has the artist’s name and the name of the album. the picture takes up more of the room on the cover because helps to identify who the artist is easier because he is well known.
the producers and record labels on the back and the distribution and copy rights are deplayed too.
the stance is one of Machael Jackson’s famous stances and even though it isnt an actual picture of him, the photos that are inside the sihiloutte are relatied to the album.
Wednesday 5th March 2014 For this digipak, the front cover will be of the floral and have a mid shot of the artist in the centre. • The floral pattern will be wallpaper that is scanned and edited so the hue and saturation is changed to suit either the pale or bright tone of the model. • A camera would be used to take a picture of the artist, on a plain white background, a scanner would be used to scan the floral patterned wallpaper and photoshop would be used to edit the photographs from the artist shoot and the colour of the patterns. Also to put everything together and make the digipak layout right. • My inspriation is taken from a few different places. The line across the eyes was taken from Tinie Tempah’s album Demonstration. The idea of have the floral pattern on the actual CD is from Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream album, whos album links to the idea of sweet things and has a donut and lollipop CD.
Wednesday 12th March 2014 For this digipak, the outcome of the final digipak I was able to copy my plan to ever detail. I was able to use the floral background on all three covers and for the print on the actually CD disc. The name of the album is flowers so I thought it would be good to have an actually flower background on the cover. Even though I have covered the artiss eyes like Tinie Tempahs album you still know who it is even though you can see his full face and I like the squirky style it adds to the cover and the colour of the line matches the flowers. Because the artist is fairly pale and wearing a white skirt, her bright blonde hair outfit and skin work well with the white background it is pure and simple. I manipulated everything as seperate documents on photoshop then placed them all on one photoshop document which was the digipak template, so I could also get the layout right. In the editing process, Because I had Chantelle on a white background and it was very similar to the colour of her clothes I did simple changes such as changing the brightness, hue and saturation so there was a clear different between the background and the artist. I did a few spot touch ups because the front cover of the digipak is a close up and I wanted her to look as flawless as possible. A lot of the picture is covered of by the flowers so I didnt have to do much. I kept to the pink colour screen through out and google a barcode to make it look real. I used the same flower pattern and cut out a section of the flower by using the quick selection tool and copied the layer to seperately put it on the back cover of the digipak. I used photoshop to edit the digipak and apply it to the template.
Wednesday 19th March 2014 The poster links closely with the design of the digipak.
