n outdoor wedding can be a risk. But if you can be brave and pull it off, the result can be incredible .... just like this wedding. Here’s Esther to tell us more; “I scoured everywhere for our venue (it took me 2 years to find it). The venue suited us down to the ground, it is a real life working organic farm, which also caters for relaxed, bespoke, DIY, weddings. The venue put on a hog roast for the wedding breakfast, this was followed by pizzas late into the evening, we also had a pudding competition (most people brought a pud) that went down very well indeed. My favourite ‘makes’ were the sweet favour ‘flower pot’ with chalk board place names. Each pot was filled with layers of dolly mixture, popping candy, mini smarties and choc rubble- the guests loved them and most got taken home. I also had a thing for wellies on the day, I arranged flowers in them – it sort of carried the ‘garden’ theme on too. I spent hours and hours on the ‘garden theme’ by giving every guest a flower/plant name for their seating plan.- matching the guest’s personality or job to a flower/plant. Some of the outcomes were hilarious. The guest names were displayed on two white washed old doors and pinned to vintage French flower seed packets (I bought these off Ebay, I also photocopied them so people could take them home on the day). I also made a magnetic painted tree, where guests left a message on a leaf and stuck their leaves to the board. It is now up in our home on the wall displaying such lovely well wishes.” Wow, what a wedding. We’re sure you’ll agree Esther went above and beyond to create an utterly amazing wedding day under the skies – we hope it helps inspire you too. hen planning your big day, you’ll no doubt have a vision of what your wedding will look like. In this vision you may not have considered the smaller details.

However, these smaller details are what bring your wedding day together, from the centre pieces to favours they are all just as important. Place cards are an aspect of your wedding which all your guests will have a close look at. When designing place cards for a wedding reception we all want a design that is both practical and pretty. Folded cards and luggage tags are simple and cost effective, they can easily be ‘jazzed’ up with decorations that incorporate them into your wedding style. Having a token item such as a vintage door key tied to the place card is another great way to make sure the place cards are in-keeping with the overall style of the wedding. For a sweet touch, why not include a little message on the place cards thanking your guests for coming. Follow the rule that ‘less is more’ and you can’t go wrong!

hen initially looking for our dream wedding venue, the Walled Garden was just starting to launch. When we saw the place it was early April, the garden was only just starting to show signs of bursting into life, the marquee was very basic and bare and they were not yet licensed for ceremonies. But despite all this we fell in love with the place. It is fair to say that we put a lot of faith into Emma (the venue manager) and the team but we were so glad that we did. We went back several times over the 15 months prior to the wedding and every time we could see it coming together more and more. By the time our wedding day arrived it was just perfect, all of our guests thought so too, they had never been anywhere like it before. We were very conscious about not having a ‘themed’ wedding and ensuring it was more of a style. It was always going to have a vintage style but we wanted it to be different to the ‘Vintage Country Garden’ theme of birdcages and bunting and wanted it to be more classic and timeless which would fit perfectly with the Victorian garden. Having such a fantastic garden space, we wanted to ensure people would be able to use it during the evening and had the idea to create around 100 lanterns to spread around the garden using a vintage gardening flower book we sourced from a local charity shop and Nottingham lace to decorate jars that we had friends and family storing up for us. When we met with Lee Garland our wedding photographer, we saw the Vintage Booth and knew it would fit in perfectly. It was fantastic fun, all the guests loved it and it was a real ice breaker to help the guests mix a lot more easily with those they did not know and also gave them their own keepsakes to take away. The venue worked perfectly for the day. The marquee and gardens allowed our wedding to feel very relaxed which I never expected to feel on the day! The guests were able to come and go with ease to enjoy the garden and the time in the marquee. More importantly

W W W.

the young children were able to run around, play and enjoy the day as much as the adults by having the outdoor space and plenty of room in the marquee too. By having this outdoor space we were also able to set out some activities for the children to keep them entertained - skipping ropes, skittles, hula hoops and bean bags. The team at The Walled Garden could not do enough for us and were very accommodating to our requests. They also helped to create an Indian inspired barbecue for the evening so we could again incorporate this side of Jat’s culture into our wedding. There are also stunning photo opportunities in and around the garden which was another thing that was so important to us. All in all The Walled Garden really did allow the day to be totally relaxed, all of the guests have said not only how beautiful a place it was but that it was one of the most relaxed and most fun weddings they had been to. The best piece of advice I was given was to not get caught up with all the little things that aren’t quite right on the day, no one else will know and if you spend your time focusing on this you will miss out on making the most of enjoying the day. I am the sort of person that needs everything to be perfect but I am so glad I listened to and followed this advice. Finally, make the most of the Save the Date Magazine and Wedding Event with a Difference. I first went to a national wedding fair and came away feeling totally overwhelmed. When I visited the Walled Garden I was given a copy of the Save the Date magazine and it really was a life saver, I became a little obsessed with it! Save the Date became my ultimate ‘go-to’ for everything from inspiration to suppliers. You can see from the supplier list that most of it is made up through Save the Date recommend suppliers. The quality of all suppliers is second to none and they can all be worked with on a variety of budgets. I really do think I would have been lost without Save the Date, the team we pulled together from suppliers were fantastic and I don’t think we could have pulled it off without them.”

1. You’ve picked a photographer you trust; get the most from them by giving them space to explore your wedding. And by space, we essentially mean time. The best reportage and storytelling comes from an unhurried photographer. After the ceremony, people are seeing one another for the first time and catching up, kids aren’t yet cranky, hugs are happening, people haven’t ditched their jackets, no one’s broken the lawn games. It’s key time.

5. Obviously you don’t want to leave people getting bored and hangry waiting too long for dinner. Just try to have a sit down and think about leaving yourself enough time to do all you want to, without feeling rushed. If you’d like confetti, some ‘you’ time, some chatting time, maybe some groups - allow yourself time to enjoy it rather than rush it. An unhurried photographer takes better photographs, and you will thank yourselves when you get the photos back.

2. Make sure you get some time just for the two of you, letting the awesomeness of what you’ve just done sink in. The time you are off with your photographer shooting portraits is ideal for this. Having some breathing space to just enjoy being absorbed in one another on your wedding day makes for the best shots.

By contributor, Lee Garland. www.weddings.leegarland.co.uk

3. Allowing yourselves a little more time between ceremony and meal offers you some decent time to socialise with your guests; so you don’t sit down for your meal realising you haven’t spoken to half of them yet. Bathe in compliments and do some serious hugging. Hugs = great photos. 4. You’ve probably spent a good while making everything look as nice as possible for the wedding breakfast, and we ideally need a chance to take photographs in there before everyone descends on it. Having some shots of the room as people see it when they first walk in makes all that effort worthwhile. Before they put their jackets on the chairs and bags on the tables.

W W W.

There is a lot of ‘received wisdom’ associated with wedding days. You don’t have to heed it. Perhaps you’d like to do a First Look? Portraits before the ceremony? Family groups before the wedding? All of this is totally contrary to convention - but interestingly, only in the UK!

aving recently relocated to the Focus Gallery in Nottingham, Rachel Helen Designs is going from strength to strength. With a dedicated workshop and an inspiring space in which to work, Rachel can enjoy doing what she does best – designing and making bespoke wedding and engagement rings for her discerning clients. Rachel says, “From my new workshop, I am able to create pieces in Fairtrade Gold, recycled platinum, palladium and sterling silver and supply most gemstones including diamonds. Recycled metals do not lose any of their quality in re-cycling - the metal is melted down, refined and re-formed as if it were made from new. This prevents new material being dug out of the ground. As of the 1st January this year I made the decision to create all new commissions (where possible) using Fairtrade Gold or recycled metals. This prevents a drain on the earth’s resources, gives people decent jobs and regulates the use of harmful chemicals. It also gives the pieces a story to tell.” A unique approach means that Rachel has the opportunity to create pieces of jewellery totally bespoke and tailored to the individual client, for example re-working old jewellery into new sentimental metal and gemstones. Locally sourced and British suppliers is also an important part of the business ethics, and where possible Rachel will ensure that British based suppliers are used. So, if you’re looking for a piece of jewellery to stand the test of time and tell a story, Rachel Helen Designs will ensure you are in safe hands

WELCOME TO THE WEDDING OF LOUISE AND ANTHONY “

W

e married at the Carriage Hall in Plumtree. Apart from being so close to home, we loved the Carriage Hall as it offered us an intimate venue with beautiful surroundings. The building itself is perfect… A converted hall with a contemporary twist. From the minute we looked around we thought it would be ideal, and Mel and her team were so knowledgable and friendly that we knew our day would run smoothly! Having visited Perkins restaurant many times, we knew the food would be superb too! We were keen for the day to be as relaxed as possible, we didn’t want a strict time schedule and lots of pomp, we just wanted an informal day with our favourite people. Set in beautiful grounds in spring time we were keen to keep it light and fresh, with lots of neutral colours and pretty details. My dress was by Justin Alexander, from beautiful brides on Bridlesmith Gate. I had done a ridiculous amount of Pinterest searching, and knew I wanted something fitted but classic, with some lace detail. I only went to one bridal shop and tried on three dresses, as I had a really good idea of what I wanted before we started! Having got to know my worst and favourite body bits over the years, I was keen to hide the bad, and flaunt the less bad, so I went for a fish tail shape to try and keep a nice feminine silhouette. The wedding stationary was courtesy of ourselves! Again I’d seen a similar design on Pinterest… We downloaded the font and designed our own, and had them printed with an online company! This turned out much cheaper than the normal route. The cake was courtesy of my family and friends… My gran, my mum and I spent hours

W W W.

making a giant fruit cake from my grans trusted recipe, and the top two tiers were courtesy of my baking extraordinaire maid of honour… We were so pleased to have some personal touches in the wedding, and it was a huge bonus that they looked and tasted great! The flowers were from Slades on Melton road; although they looked slightly apprehensive when I presented them with my Pinterest board of ideas, it gave them a really good idea of what I was trying to achieve. Most of the details were DIY… from the chalkboard, to the place settings and the table plan. Hobby craft was a mecca of great wedding decorations, and again it was an area we were happy to do ourselves so that we could spend money on our priorities… Photos and music! My hair was done by Emma Major at Real Salon on Melton Road, who was a star as always, and make up by Jenni Hughes, who did a great job of our ‘face transplants’. The star of the show was undoubtedly our photographer Razia… We will be forever grateful for her incredible pictures. There is no denying that our wedding was a culmination of my Pinterest obsession, but in principle I think having loads of visual brainstorms really helps put all the different bits of the day together. I was able to make boards of flowers and cakes and colours schemes and dresses and play with what all matched well. Personally I felt so much happier knowing that we had loads of personal elements to the day, from the cake to the stationary to the DIY flowers… I think our main advice would be just to relax and enjoy it, it goes by too fast!”

peeches - Love them or hate them, they are undeniably a huge part of a wedding day. Whether it’s a touching speech by the proud father of the bride, a sentimental anecdote by the groom or a cheeky, laugh out loud dose of hilarity from the best man, most guests enjoy taking their seat and listening intently to the stories told by the wedding party. So, it comes as no surprise that those given the responsibility of a speech (usually the father of the bride, groom & best man, sometimes the bride) like to make the most of the opportunity and deliver something which not only engages the guests but touches them, makes them laugh and keeps them entertained. The pressure is on. Those brimming with confidence and poise can deliver a speech without very much preparation at all. Their casual, laid back nature and witty personality help them to tell stories and tales in such a way that the guests become swept away with the emotion of it all. Those less confident, more nervous and apprehensive can find a speech a very daunting task, an element of the day which they put so much focus on, they begin to dread. So, for those who find public speaking a rather terrifying prospect, here are a few words of wisdom from previous brides, grooms, best men and wedding industry experts to help tackle those wedding speech jitters...

• Be prepared. Write notes, think of what you want to say far in advance and practise the speech over and over • Always have a drink of water with you • Props, videos, pictures and slideshows are a great way to get your feelings and stories across without the constant sound of your own voice • Avoid Google - You are never going to find original material on the internet and a personal speech is an original one • Get Feedback; Rehearse to someone you know will give you an honest opinion • Less is more. It’s much better leaving the guests wanting more than seeing them yawning and checking their mobile phone • Enjoy it! It’s an honour to be able to speak at such a memorable occasion and something you will remember forever so deep breath, clear your throat and have fun!

BEST PHOTOGR APHER FOR THE EAST MIDL ANDS 2015

I

an Bursill, winner of ‘Best Photographer’ for the East Midlands region in the Wedding Industry Awards of 2012, 2014 and 2015 talks about 15 minutes that are vital in his approach to documenting the day. “There’s some essential groundwork I carry out before I press a shutter release on the day. It’s crucial in helping my subjects feel comfortable with me as their photographer. My couples often live long distances away from their Midlands venue and will book without meeting in person. I insist on at least a FaceTime meeting though as I need to be sure as well that we are a good fit for each others requirements. I’ll also ask to meet 5-8 weeks before the day to chat through timings. We can do this again via FaceTime if meeting up in person is difficult. This way, I will always have met my couples twice before the day. We’ll have built up a rapport, and I’ll have explained my approach, which is vital in getting natural and emotive images. As a storyteller, my coverage starts on the day with preparations. I love that transition from girl to bride. She’ll be more nervous than those previous times we’ve met and isn’t going to be the only person present. There will be bridesmaids, parents, relatives and makeup and hair there as well. Some will be in dressing gowns and curlers, some will be eating breakfast. They won’t know me at all - even if I’ve met my couple a hundred times before. Are they going to feel comfortable with a complete stranger walking in and taking pictures without making the effort to build up some rapport?

W W W.

These are the 15 minutes that are pivotal in me getting results from this intimate part of the day. I’ll often walk in without my cameras. If I have them with me, I’ll put them down. I’ll chat with parents, the bridesmaids, the other vendors. Find some common ground, talk about families. The more people present, the better. And the more outgoing folks are, the easier it is. After a short while, you see the barriers drop. People will feel less inhibited and I’ll pick up a camera and ease myself into the day. The rest of the day, I’ll blend in smoothly. At the church, they’re focused on the ceremony, and I don’t draw attention to myself as I work quietly, patiently and respectfully. I’ll lose myself during the reception by working close in and mingling with the guests. I’m less noticeable working like that.During the speeches, I’ll work low down, between the tables. People are relaxed now, and more interested in the jokes than a photographer. When it comes to the dancing, the guests won’t care less about me. I’ll be on the dance floor with them capturing their fancy moves. But those first 15 minutes. They are the foundations on which I build my narrative approach. The result? Natural, emotive and timeless photographs.” info@bursill.com www.bursill.com 07881 438 911

Emily says, “When the bride contacted me to work on her wedding stationery, she had a few ideas she definitely wanted to include (a massive Pinterest page full!) but wanted our professional guidance with the finishing touches. We worked mainly over email; Kerry & John live in Australia so needed a company they could trust to get all the bits together ready for their arrival, Whyte Weddings were recommended to them so they opted for us! We started by building some wedding invitation designs based on their chosen theme of travel, the obvious choice being a passport invitation. Kerry wanted to include maps where possible so we incorporated a vintage map into the invitation and used luxury linen wove card & paper, giving the invitation a gorgeous handle. She teamed these with mint envelopes to include their colour scheme. Once we had the invitations sorted, the rest came naturally! Finishing with luggage tags for name cards, a beautiful vintage map table plan & chalkboards with hints of gold the venue looked amazing! By far the most beautiful wedding we have had the pleasure to work on this year!” Kerry and John had this to say about Emily & the team at Whyte Weddings Stationery. “We couldn’t be happier with the service and products we received from Emily, she is a little wedding fairy! She brought our ideas to life, kept the process as simple as possible, as well as the pricing; nothing

was too much for her! She even helped out with the flowers on the day after a mishap with the florist! The invitations were loved by everyone and seeing the chalkboards at the entrance made me cry! Her attention to detail is flawless, we have recommended her to everyone we know getting married!” Emily at Whyte Weddings Stationery is happy to help you with your wedding, simply contact her with the details below.
