eanne and Matthew opted for a relaxed, rustic wedding at The West Mill. Featuring subtly stylish industrial vibes, it's guaranteed to inspire your very own special day. These childhood sweethearts knew the venue was the perfect setting for their celebration as soon as they saw it. They wanted their wedding dĂŠcor to be rustic yet unforgettable, swapping flowers for foliage and styling their day with some seriously cool details - just wait until you see the huge pink roll top bath! We'll hand you over to real bride, Leanne, so you can find out a little more about the inspiration behind their wedding dayâ&#x20AC;Ś "The day was just incredible. It was so nice to see all the people we grew up with come together to see us move to the next mile stone. We got married at the beautiful West Mill in Darley Abbey, and as soon as we parked up in the venue I was sold. The building itself is absolutely stunning and the rustic feel inside was exactly what we wanted.

I loved the fact that everything is all in one place too, so our guests didn't have to travel throughout the day. For the style of our dĂŠcor, we opted for a rustic wedding theme, serving alcohol from a huge pink roll top bath. We had some big copper frames made by Grove Joinery which had Perspex boards hanging from them, made by Megan Catterhole Styling. When it came to floral design, we went for foliage instead of flowers as we felt it matched the venue and our colour scheme. We used sliced logs painted with chalk paint as our place settings, and hand wrote the names in copper ink. We used tree trunks for the table centrepieces, which were sourced from a friend who is a tree surgeon. Myself and Emma of Hello Cake made the wedding favours, which were little boxes of vanilla meringues. My dress was incredible, if I do say so myself. The designer was Allure Bridal and I literally fell in love with it before I even tried it on. It was a sweetheart neckline with an embroidered body and a huge organza ruffle train. I also wore a leather jacket that was hand painted with 'Mrs S' on the back by the amazing Bee Davies Illustration. Matt wore a gorgeous blue Ted Baker suit which we hired from Moss Bros. He had a pastel pink tie to match the dĂŠcor, while the best men and usher wore the same but with green ties to match the bridesmaids. Our bridesmaids wore a mint green bardot-style maxi dress. As I had seven bridesmaids, I felt that it was important to choose a style that suited all of the different heights and shapes. For our wedding breakfast, we chose feta cheese salad for our starter, chicken with stuffing. and vegetables for our main, and a lemon cheesecake with raspberry sauce for dessert - our favourite! We wanted to keep the entertainment as simple as possible and had our good friend Gareth DJ for us. Our advice for future brides and grooms? Don't get too stressed about the small stuff because on the day you won't even notice!" ow one of the East Midlands best loved wedding venues continues to bloom and flourish; we chat about the highs and lows of managing, running and developing the serene, idyllic Walled Garden with venue manager, Emma Davidson. "Having worked here at the Walled Garden for over 7 years, I have watched this venue become one of the most sought after wedding venues of its kind. Brides and Grooms are captivated by its english charm and quintessential style. And, it’s been amazing to be part of such a fantastic success story but it’s not been without its challenges! Managing such a busy wedding venue is tough. It’s hard work, there’s no 9-5 and we rely heavily on our team for their support. Finding the right team in hospitality is very difficult. It’s one of the lowest paid industries in the UK and not many choose it for a long term career! But working one of the happiest days of people’s lives is rewarding. You always feel valued in your job and it has its perks too. We often sit in the garden for lunch (sometimes with a gin), you don’t get that working at the bank!

One of the challenges that people don’t always consider is the weather. People just think about the weather on their big day but this year’s late and abundant snow fall has impacted all areas of our business. The garden is slow to flower this year, plus we lost many plants and we've spent a fortune on early flowering plants to ensure the garden's looking good from April. The ladybirds in England suffered which means their numbers are down and white fly is up! The hedges and roses are needing our intensive care with money and man power. The farmers suffered and our food costs on lamb especially have shot up. Investing in the team is the most efficient way to develop and maintain a successful venue. No one wants 3 different wedding coordinaters or ageny chefs putting their menus together. We develop them with training and fun days with financial pockets set aside each year just for them. They can come to me and ask to go anywhere if it’s going to benefit their careers. Recently we’ve enjoyed trips abroad for Christmas inspiration, calligraphy courses, garden tours and photography courses. We're also realistic about working in the modern world, the constant juggle of family life and people’s health. We often have the team bringing their children in during school holidays, and our dogs can be seen regularly trotting across the car park ready for a day at work. Our team love the flexibility and support and it’s returned with their dedication. Plus our customers love how relaxed the venue feels when they see our extended team! The running of the Walled Garden involves chefs, planners, operations and gardeners all working together covering 3 time spans. What’s happening right now, what planning is happening for the immediate future and how the business is shaping for the years ahead. Keeping an eye on developing trends but not losing your identity is key. The fashions come and go as they do on a high street. Vintage bunting, lace and afternoon tea worked perfectly in our English garden but the industrial look was going to be harder to incorporate. We decided to re-do the bar area at the start of last year and used oversized copper shades with matt greys and filament bulbs and we filled it with a wall of plants and chalked signs illustrated with flowers! Our uniqueness is our

location & the garden and it takes creative and intuitive minds in our team with lots of foresight, planning years ahead of time! We all absolutely love what we do and think that’s the key. We will all go above and beyond to ensure our weddings are nothing short of perfection and the ever increasing challenges help us to stay ahead of the game, never become complacent and soak up the wonderful experiences we’re lucky to enjoy at such a special wedding venue”.

We’ve recently welcomed several new key members of the team who have helped us to develop customer service and offer personal touches to make all of our guests feel welcomed and valued. What do you feel makes your wedding venue stand out? We are a truly unique venue in Derbyshire in that we offer a stunning countryside setting, within easy reach of Derby and it’s transport links. The house was designed in 1760 by Robert Adam, the noted Georgian architect who designed Kedleston Hall. In 2015 the building was renovated by Derby Brewing Company and restored to it’s former classical English country house glory. The light filled restaurant with it’s wooden parquet floors is a beautiful space to host your wedding breakfast, while the newly added orangery provides stunning views of the surrounding countryside while you say your vows. The house offers five stunning boutique bedrooms, including two large suites, so there is plenty of space for you and your loved ones to make a weekend of it. You are invited to ‘make the house your home’ for the duration of your wedding celebrations so just relax, sip on a cocktail, and enjoy yourself. What style of wedding do you think is best suited to the Kedleston? Country-boho style weddings look beautiful in the Orangery. The missmatch vintage chairs and tables only need a few wild flowers and hessian ties to make it look like a celebration. On the other hand, classic luxury weddings also look fantastic with the backdrop of stunning surroundings and classy interiors. Winter weddings are particularly special at The Kedleston, cosying up with mulled wine by log fires makes for an intimate and unforgettable gathering. Personally, what do you love the most about the Kedleston as a wedding venue? I like the fact that you can choose to have exclusive use which means you and your guests are the only people on the entire estate. You have the run of the bar, restaurant, lounge rooms, orangery, terrace and garden, and it feels like your very own country house. WITH APRIL DELIGHTS Tell us a little bit about your lovely cake business! What inspired you to start a wedding cake business, and have you always wanted to design and create cakes?

Floristry was my first passion, but after taking a short course in cake decoration, I soon caught the bug and I haven’t looked back. My first wedding cake was an all-chocolate masterpiece with a swoop of handmade chocolate roses. That’s when I decided I liked flowers but loved designing wedding cakes. What makes your service & cakes stand out from the crowd? All of our wedding cakes are completely bespoke and are designed to fit in with each wedding theme. Having a good background and knowledge of flowers means I can match the wedding flowers to the cake. When it

comes to weddings, I love hearing my couples talk about their big day dreams as each and every one is so different. We also offer lots of other tasty treats to add the wow factor to your wedding, including mini cakes, macarons, cookies, cake pops, rose pops and cupcakes. What is your favourite style / design of cake to create for couples? A tiered cake with some watercolour and gilding, finished off with large blooms. However, for 2018 and 2019 we can expect to see lots of stylefocused cakes using floral hoops, dramatic oversized blooms and cakes adorned top to toe with flowers. When it comes to choosing flavour combinations, my couples love classic flavours such as vanilla, jam and buttercream, chocolate fudge, lemon delight, red velvet and for those with a true sweet tooth – toffee cream! How would you recommend couples choose a style of cake, where should they start? If flowers play a big part of your wedding day and you would like to replicate these on the cake, ask your florist to create you a mood-board. I love nothing more than handcrafting flowers to add a beautiful, floral touch to a bespoke cake. Pinterest is also a great place to start if you need some inspiration for your cake design. You can also look to fabrics, flowers and textures – you’d be surprised where you can find ideas and inspo! How would you style a wedding dessert or cake table? A wedding dessert table can have a real impact at your reception – so make it stand out from the crowd! To style a cake table, I would use a delicious assortment of macaron towers, mini cakes adorned with delicate flowers, cookies iced with the bride and groom’s initials and cake pops covered in tiny pearls, finished off with a centrepiece cake. I would also use a variety of glass stands to display these delicious delights! Get creative with table runners and backdrops to add a magical touch to your dessert table. If you could create a wedding cake for anyone, who would it be and why? In the past, I have created a 7-tier wedding cake with a bottom tier of 300 handmade roses, each tier was a different style and it stood beneath a fresh phelanopis orchird arch.

However, I’d love to create a cake for Elton John, as I know he loves flowers as much as I do! Also, tell us about your vintage camper vans? Established in 2014, we also run a family-run campervan business alongside April Delights – the perfect way to arrive in style at your celebration! We have a number of vintage campervans, all of which are decorated with fabric bunting as well as ivory ribbons and bows. There is plenty of space in each campervan for your wedding dress too! When on the hunt for a long weekend away I came across this gem of a self-catering beach chalet (The Daydreamer) on the fabulous Unique Home Stays website *if you’ve not checked out their collection of what can only be described as AMAZNG homes to stay in, then do it now! www.uniquehomestays.com Perched on Freathy Cliff overlooking Whitsand Bay, this unique, luxury clifftop chalet looked idyllic. After a busy few months at work, we were ready to switch off from the world and that’s what we did! Greeted with a lovely hamper, the Daydreamer didn’t disappoint. The views in ‘real life’ were even better and the sun was shining too. It instantly felt like ‘home from home’ with all the usual amenities and with the stylish costal chic décor, it felt like a ‘daydream!’ (excuse the pun!)

With the never-ending views across the bay, we spent many an hour on the decking area, relaxing, reading, snoozing and feeling totally relaxed after our first day. We had a BBQ one evening (I told you it has everything!) and complete with its own hot tub, at dusk we listened to the waves and star gazed whilst sipping on fizz. The Daydreamer is in the perfect spot for exploring quaint, Cornish villages, enjoying coastal walks and sampling good food at trendy gastro pubs nearby (there is even a Michelin star restaurant nearby if you really want to treat yourselves!) This unique, luxury retreat couldn’t be more of a perfect place for a minimoon/honeymoon. We really didn’t want to leave, and it will be a weekend we remember forever. IAN BURSILL -

here are so many important aspects of planning your wedding day, but we wholeheartedly believe that choosing the right photographer to capture the magic and memories should certainly be at the top of your list. We’ve worked with the talented Ian Bursill for many years now and we just love everything about his work. We’re chatting to Ian about life as a wedding photographer, getting to know what it takes to capture a couple’s celebration on camera… So, why can’t couples have every picture the photographer takes and choose their favourites? "A videographer will be with you for 12 hours, will maybe shoot 4 hours worth of coverage but will only deliver a 5-minute highlight video and a 30-minute feature. Like the videographer, I’m shooting with the story of the day and an album design in mind. I’ll need certain shots to aid the narrative for each part of the wedding.

WHY DON’T WE GET ALL THE PICTURES? BEHIND THE SCENES

I typically shoot anything between 1500-2500 frames. All of those images will not fit in an album. OK, they would, but they would be the size of a postage stamp, or you’d have to have 4 or 5 wedding albums to fit decent sized images in. There would also be a lot of repetition as I will take more than one shot of any scene on the day to get the best expressions. I’ll also work a scene and will change angles or wait to see a situation develop. Once the images are downloaded, I’ll start the culling process, where I run through every single frame taken on the day and mark the pictures I’ll be keeping. A ‘keeper’ is a shot that tells a story, explaining what is happening during that part of the day. It may also be an image that will help to support another picture (or series of photos) on the page of an album. For example, I might grab a wide angle shot of the best man midway through his speech. The groom is behind with his hands over his face squirming in embarrassment. To support that wide shot I’ll be looking for close-up reactions of guests, and these pics would typically go on to the same spread in the album. I do 2-3 passes during this culling process, whittling the numbers down but strengthening the story by losing the weaker shots. Any image that doesn’t add significantly to the story of the day or is technically imperfect or is unflattering to the subject (blinks or strange expressions etc.) is rejected. If too many similar photos are shown from each moment on the day, it waters down the strength of the narrative. However, I will keep a sequence of images from the same part of the day if they tell a better story than a single image. Trust your photographer, it’s all in the edit. And remember; you wouldn’t sit with your videographer while he works through his 8 hours of coverage and crafts it into a 30-minute story." Between the bride's stylishly simple dress, the incredible fern filled sperry tent reception and the most gorgeous summery colour palette, we are ever so slightly obsessed with this insanely stylish, Northumberland wedding of Anna and Jamie. Anna has a strong sense of style, choosing a Calvin Klein wedding dress and colourful shoes, the latter of which were cast off immediately after the ceremony and photographs in favour of a pair of white trainers (all the better to dance in). Her bridesmaids wore dresses from Warehouse that tied in with the fern theme. The brief Anna gave her wedding planner, Katie Crichton-Stuart from Albion Parties, was to create a beautiful and stylish wedding, balancing being conventional in some aspects with being entirely relaxed in other aspects. With a keen eye for detail, Katie worked with Anna to develop a theme incorporating pink tones with dark green ferns and a touch of gold. The highly stylized tent interior focused on clean lines, with pink

flowers in the center of the tables surrounded by more whimsical ferns pouring out from underneath. A strong family feel came through the wedding, with Anna's younger sisters and brothers being her bridesmaids and pageboys, Anna's friend playing the piano, and her uncle officiating at the ceremony. Having a great band was really important to Anna and Jamie, and they chose The Faithettes, the backing band of Paloma Faith, followed by friends who DJ'ed late into the night. Guests were given the choice of staying in bell tents pitched in the next door field, where Katie had put "Hangover Packs" filled with essentials for guests. The morning after, guests who had stayed the night were treated to James Davie's brunch of bacon rolls, eggs to order, mini pastries, suckling pig with apple sauce, and large bloody marys. When a couple makes an initial enquiry, the first thing we have to do is check that we’re available and fingers crossed, once we have discovered we are, would invite a couple to come and meet with us at our HQ in Lincoln. During an initial meeting, we have a good old natter with our couple over a brew to really get a feel for the sort of day they are planning for – and of course giving them some of our signature samples to try. We then work with our couple to get a draft menu and quote down on paper which they then take away with them to consider.

We then arrange a site visit to their venue if it is somewhere we have never worked previously and also offer a complimentary tasting session (at their venue, wherever possible), approximately 6-9 months before their big day. At a tasting session, a couple will try their whole menu in full and also to size so they are completely reassured about the food they are going to eat on their big day. We then also use that time to make tweaks to the menu if the couple would like to make any changes which we are more than happy to accommodate.

We feel (and hear in feedback from our couples and clients), that we go above and beyond to ensure a couple is looked after by us from the minute they enquire until they leave on the day of the wedding and it’s that which sets us apart from all other caterers. We truly love what we do, and we feel that shows in the care and attention given to our clients, couples and most importantly in the food!”

The Big Day!

Then comes the big day! We always go to a wedding venue the day before to meet with our couples to go through any last-minute worries, set their tables and also the kitchen and will never leave until a couple is completely happy with everything. On the big day itself, we are usually the first supplier on site and the last to leave! By that point, everything is taken care of and the only thing we have to worry about is ensuring the bride, groom and all of their guests are fed, watered and just completely looked after… and generally speaking, that’s the easiest part as all the legwork will have been done from both ends in the lead up to the big day! That’s one of the big reasons that working with a couple on their wedding day is an absolute joy.

We’ll hand you over to the bride, Hayley, so you can find out a little more about their special day… “We chose to host an intimate, vintage-themed wedding, complete with afternoon tea served on crockery that we sourced ourselves, including cake stands, teapots, sugar bowls and milk jugs! We chose Sutton Bonington Hall as it is intimate yet elegant with the most stunning gardens. Privately owned, the owners made us feel completely at home and were so accommodating. A blank canvas venue, we could dress and style it to suit our theme. In fact, I cried the first time that I walked around, it took my breath away! A real hidden

gem, our guests were all speechless when they arrived at our sunny September wedding. On the morning of the wedding, I got ready in the Lady Elton Suite which overlooked the gardens; it was a beautiful way to start the day. Our wedding was very much a family affair, with people helping with DIY projects to bring our dreams to life. We made garden games for our guests to enjoy in the sunshine, including ring toss, bean bag toss and tin-can alley. We also had hula hoops that were enjoyed by guests of all ages! We filled the venue with over 100 candle lit hessian jars and bottles. One friend made our bunting while another created the most fabulous three-tier naked wedding cake. We even had personalised log centrepieces, it was the ultimate DIY wedding. Katie of 'The Vintage House That Could' was our amazing venue stylist. Katie was left with box after box of DIY items, helping to transform our venue into the wedding I had dreamed of for years. We opted for a grey and dusky pink colour scheme, which worked perfectly with Sutton Bonington Hall. As childhood sweethearts, Jaime and I had been together for 20 years before getting married. It had been a long time coming, so it wasn’t just about the day itself, it was about the build-up too. I wore a gown by Enzoani, with an altered neckline to make it unique. As soon as I tried the dress on, I knew it was ‘The One’. It featured head to toe lace, with a figure-hugging fit and a delicate sparkle. I complimented the beautiful train with a cathedral veil. My Maid of Honour and eldest bridesmaid wore dusky pink dresses from Debenhams, while my youngest bridesmaid wore a dusky pink and lace dress from Monsoon. The groom and groomsmen wore dashing grey suits from Jon Paul. Upon arrival, our guests had the chance to listen to our string quartet playing carefully chosen pieces. They also played after the ceremony, while guests enjoyed the sunshine in the glorious gardens. For our wedding breakfast, we spoilt our guests with a traditional afternoon tea that included warm canapés to start, followed by finger sandwiches, cakes and scones. This was washed down with tea, coffee, wine and prosecco. We chose the menu carefully to accommodate everyone’s tastes. We also wanted our wedding breakfast to tie in with the relaxed feel of the day. In the evening, we served fish and chips in cones and a range of petit fours, as well as our incredible wedding cake.

We had a live band and DJ – a guaranteed way to get guests on the dance-floor! Our advice to future brides and grooms would be to enjoy the wedding planning, even though it is stressful at times!
