e’ve been following Jade & Dave’s wedding planning journey on the blog for over 6 months, so we couldn’t wait to hear all about their big day which took place this summer at Shustoke Farm Barns in Warwickshire and it certainly hasn’t disappointed. The newlywed’s wedding was ridiculously gorgeous and it’s full of dreamy details and decorations that will seriously inspire you. We’ll hand you over to Jade, so you can get the complete lowdown… “From start to finish the whole day was perfect and we couldn't have asked for more, it was completely relaxed and personal to us. After a short and sweet but personal ceremony, we had reception drinks in the courtyard in the afternoon sunshine followed by our wedding breakfast and the incredible heartfelt speeches by my dad, Dave and his Best Man, which at one point also included an unexpected game of Mr & Mrs! The evening reception was set to the soundtrack of The Good Habits band who had us dancing all night long in between toasting marshmallows and visiting the photo-booth and the Cookie

Wall. The night ended with our shoes off, singing our hearts out... the perfect end to the perfect day. We wanted a relaxed and rustic feel for the day and our venue fitted that perfectly. From the minute we drove up to the barn and saw the beautiful oak and glass doors we began to fall for its charm but when we walked in and saw the bare brick walls, the courtyard and the incredible high vaulted ceilings we knew that was it! Sat within the Warwickshire countryside with nothing else around we felt completely private and we were also able to make use of the fields around the barn for our sunset wedding photos which was a really special moment. We wanted the dĂŠcor to be quite simple and let the rustic features of the venue speak for itself, so we chose foliage for the dĂŠcor and I made a lot of the decorations myself, like collecting and spray painting gin bottles and creating our DIY polaroid frame table plan. A friend of mine designed our wedding stationery, my nan made our wedding cake and another friend created hand-painted signs featuring the lyrics from one of our wedding songs. I found my wedding dress at Tilly Trotters Brides in Leamington Spa. My dream wedding dress was a combination of two beautiful pieces by the designer Charlie Brear paired with the most delicate silk tulle veil, gold hair vine, a vintage style belt and a pair of Jimmy Choos (which was a childhood dream come true!). In my bridal party I had my sister and two best friends, dressed in embellished dusky pink ASOS bridesmaid dresses while Dave, his best man and ushers were kitted out in navy suits with tweed waistcoats from Peter Posh suit hire in Birmingham. I gifted Dave a floral Paul Smith tie and engraved tie pin on the morning of the wedding for an extra special touch to his outfit. Our wedding breakfast meal consisted of barbecued beef which was carved at the table by our nominated guests - we placed a chef's hat and apron on one seat at each table - finished off with the most delicious chocolate brownie and ice cream, a true crowd pleaser! In the evening our guests enjoyed pizzas made fresh in the wood fired oven in the courtyard, marshmallows toasted over the fire pits and our incredible Cookie Wall made by Ruby Lou's Cakes. Our band, The Good Habits definitely got the party started and had the dancefloor full all night long. We also had a photo booth to entertain our guests, but mostly to entertain ourselves when we looked back through the photos the following day!

When it comes to planning tips, you can never start planning too early! It will seem like you have loads of time but trust me when I say that it will come around quicker than you can imagine! Save the Date The most important thing you can do is set a rough date – whether you want to tie the knot in a few months or a couple of years. Once you’ve got a date in mind, you can book your venue and sort out your photographer. These are the two suppliers that will get booked up well in advance, so be quick before your wedding date gets snapped up. You’ll find oodles of talented, creative suppliers and awe-inspiring venues on our Cream of the Crop Wedding Directory.
2
Set the Budget You need to set your budget straightaway – this is probably the most stressful part of wedding planning so get on that Excel Spreadsheet and get organised! You’ll avoid spending-disasters later on down the line and it’s a great way to keep things in order. We’ve written a blog post all about how you can set your budget, so grab a coffee and a notepad, and visit www.savethedatemagazine.co.uk.
3
Time to Prioritise When it comes to keeping within your budget, we always recommend that you both choose three aspects of your wedding day that are the most important. This could be the venue, catering and music – this way, you know where to allocate your budget and spending.

Feeling Frazzled? Wedding planning is time-consuming, tiring and can often be overwhelming. Make sure you have one wedding-planning free day once a month where you put everything to one side and remember why you said ‘YES!’.
8
It's YOUR Day If your mother-in-law wants a three-course wedding breakfast but your dad likes the idea of the BBQ, thank them for their suggestions but stay true to yourself and what you both want for your wedding day. You’re marrying the love of your life and that’s the most important thing, not the colour of the chair covers!
9
Aisle Style When it comes to bridal trends for 2019, it is impossible to ignore the Meghan Markle effect! We are expecting to see tiaras, capes, chic gowns with simple silhouettes and plunging necklines. We can’t wait to be a part of your wedding planning journey!

elebrating over 30 years of award-winning wedding dress design, Lyn Ashworth is one of the UK’s leading British bridal labels renowned for crafting beautiful and stylish gowns. Each and every dress is designed and created at the newly opened design studio and showroom boutique on the Duchy of Lancaster Estate in Staffordshire by creative director Sarah Barrett and her talented team. On a chilly October day, we at Save the Date Magazine drove to the beautiful converted barn boutique to meet with Sarah and her team and discover what makes the Lyn Ashworth dress experience so very special. Having arrived, one of our immediate impressions was the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Best described as a hidden treasure trove, we admired the gorgeous gowns hanging perfectly and chatted to owner Sarah and discovered all about the ethos behind this iconic brand.

Originally owned by Lyn Ashworth herself, Sarah took over the reins of the brand in 2010 when Lyn emigrated to New Zealand. Having worked alongside Lyn for many years, Sarah had gained a wealth of experience (not to mention lots of funny stories!) and was the perfect person to take this thriving business into the next chapter. Renowned for attention to detail and signature corsetry Sarah has continued to uphold the quality and couture ethos established by Lyn and is as passionate as ever about the ever-evolving bridal industry and the exciting developments which lay ahead. Whether it’s an off the peg, specific dress collection brides are searching for (Lyn Ashworth stock the most elegant, dreamy dresses designed with the modern bride in mind) or a totally personalised, completely bespoke creation, Lyn Ashworth can deliver. Sarah and her team pride themselves on their craftmanship and all dresses from the initial pattern to the toile, the sewing, alterations and everything in between is done at their boutique in Staffordshire. We were given a tour of this unique place and were blown away by their professional and seamless design process – everything had a place and Sarah was incredibly proud of the way in which she and her team give their brides the most personal service. The best way to get a real feel for the Lyn Ashworth experience is to make an appointment and go and see the team doing what they do. We can assure you, if you haven’t found ‘the one’ yet, you’ll be heading to the right place. You can thank us later!

Let’s talk about the most important outfit of the day, the bridal look. A boho-luxe aisle style needs to look effortless and natural yet still exquisite. Think relaxed glamour and you’ve nailed it. Australian bridal designers are a fabulous choice for your wedding dress – you may have spotted Abbi (one half of Save the Date Magazine) rocking that amazing Grace Loves Lace wedding dress. Lots of fringing, lace and embroidery is the perfect fit for this theme, simply finish the look off with a foliage or flower crown and you’re good to go.
When it comes to a boho-luxe wedding theme, florals will play a huge part in helping your day come together. Use an abundance of wild, foraged foliage along your tables, around the entrance of your venue or to decorate a vintage car. If you’re having an outdoor wedding ceremony, entwine foliage and florals around a wooden archway. An oversized bouquet overflowing with blousy blooms and lots of greenery will go beautifully with your boho-inspired gown.

For your wedding reception, we recommend using reclaimed wooden trestle tables adorned with foliage and macramé runners. Brass, copper and brushed metallic details will help to give it a luxurious edge. Use candlesticks, gilded plates and golden cutlery. Mismatched tableware will offer a relaxed vibe. Vintage armchairs, footstools and Persian rugs will look fabulous dotted around your venue space and can be used around the dance-floor to create a lounge area. Create a fabulous backdrop for your wedding photographs by using macramé or dreamcatchers. The contrast of wooden details and the rustic setting will look wonderful against vintage furniture and metallic accents.
Matt Horan Photography | www.matthoranphotography.com
When it comes to your wedding catering, we think a grazing table will make your guests’ mouths water! A wooden table covered in cheeses, cured meats, bread, nuts, olives and more will make a wonderful alternative to a traditional three-course wedding breakfast. We can’t get enough of this ridiculously dreamy wedding theme! Don’t forget to visit www.savethedatemagazine.co.uk where you can get your next dose of wedding inspiration… 31

Meet the Maker BLACKBIRD COFFEE & FIZZ
B
much a match made in heaven and from there on in, we knew we had to see this one through.
Tell us about Blackbird Coffee & Fizz and where it all began?
And so it was at the start of 2018 that the idea to wrap up the concept under the business name of Blackbird Coffee & Fizz was born! 12 months on and we've quite literally hit the road running. We have an amazing mobile business, operating from a beautiful classic Italian vehicle with onboard fixtures and fittings to die for and fabulous produce to serve for any occasion.
ased in the heart of the Midlands and established in 2018, Blackbird Coffee & Fizz is a family run business that was born out of a love affair with coffee and Prosecco. Featuring a subtle Italian theme, the team serve an array of scrumptious hot drinks, sparkling cocktails and the finest Italian lager out of their stylish vehicle. We’re chatting to the owner, David, so you can find out all about Blackbird Coffee & Fizz…
Following extremely successful careers working in the service sector and retail industry, my wife and I decided to pool our business experiences and start up a brand-new venture of our own. We’ve always had a special love affair with all things coffee and have always dreamt about sharing our passion beyond our family and friends. We’d often thought about opening our own café bar, but we never really seemed to find the right time to kick start our ambition. After a lot of thought we just kept coming back to what we have a serious passion for and what makes us happy: coffee and fizz. The combination seemed all to obvious, very 32
W W W.
What services do you offer as a mobile bar? Barista Coffee (Lattes, Cappuccinos, Flat Whites etc), Pure Ceylon Teas, Hot Chocolate, Prosecco, Frizzante, Poretti Lager and Sparkling Cocktails. Our clients have the option to choose whatever service they like, they can have hot drinks only, alcohol only or a combination of the two. All hot drinks are served in 100% biodegradable cups and lids, while cold drinks are served using recycled plastics.

What do you feel makes your service stand out from the crowd? The ability to offer barista coffee along with very high-quality teas & hot chocolate gives our bar a much wider appeal alongside the alcoholic favourites. There is essentially something for everyone and we have the ability to meet the needs of a fully equipped drink service throughout the day in the most remote of locations. What do you love most about being involved in the wonderful world of weddings? Having had an amazing wedding ourselves we appreciate how important, how special and how personal the day can be. Being part of someone else’s day is a fantastic honour and one that we really respect to ensure everything runs smoothly. Being the point of difference is our speciality.
Coffee & Fizz
How would you describe the style and ethos of your mobile bar? The overall design and finish of our bar is very high end. It most definitely lends itself to an Italian theme – given the vehicle, the Prosecco and the Poretti but it’s totally classic. Dressed in Black and White, with white walled tyres it’s the perfect colour to accommodate any wedding. What are your most popular coffee and fizz choices? Couples can’t get enough of lattes infused with caramel syrup and our rich hot chocolate – an indulgent taste all the way from Amsterdam. When it comes to cocktails, guests are always sipping our Bellini cocktail, served with a hint of peach juice and a dash of Chambord. What are the most commonly asked questions by brides & grooms? Couples often ask how much our services cost. Indicative prices can be found on our website, blackbirdcoffee.co.uk, but for a more personal service and quotation, it's best to contact us by phone or email. Lots of clients ask us how far we travel. In truth we have no boundaries on where we can go. ith over 15 years of experience catering for weddings you could be forgiven for assuming that Gail Dandy might simply be going through the motions these days, but this isn’t the case at all: ‘I still get so excited about each wedding we do, because everybody always has a unique idea of what would make their day special and I love working with people to create a menu that reflects that.’ With a passion for great food, at the heart of Gail Dandy’s success over the years is a desire to always be developing and improving the approach to catering. This has recently led to bringing in a new head chef, Nathan Jackson. Having trained first at Langan’s Brasserie he then moved to learn under Jean Christophe Novelli and

work at his Michelin-Starred Maison Novelli. He took this experience and began working in prestigious venues such as Hush in Mayfair, catering for VIPs at the London 2012 Olympics and even cooking for royalty at the Monaco Grand Prix. Nathan has joined Gail to take the food to a new level: ‘When the opportunity to work here came up I jumped at it as there is such a great foundation and wealth of experience within Gail Dandy Catering, and I saw it as a place where I’d have the chance to innovate and bring new ideas.’ Nathan has joined at a busy time, as the company is finding itself increasingly busy at a number of wedding venues, especially at The Pumping House in Ollerton, a beautiful Victorian Grade II listed venue which has been lovingly renovated and recently won The Wedding Industry Award for Wedding Venue (Countryside) Of The Year. The coming year looks to be an exciting and busy one for Gail Dandy Catering.
GAIL, TOM AND THE TEAM DID A SPECTACULAR JOB ON OUR WEDDING DAY. THE FOOD AND SERVICE WAS AMAZING! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE AMAZING JOB - WE ARE SO APPRECIATIVE FOR EVERYTHING YOU DID FOR US. WE LOOK FORWARD TO FINDING AN EXCUSE TO USE YOU AGAIN IN THE FUTURE!

e’ve been big fans of The Hummingbird Card Company for many years. Their ethos of ‘you dream, we create’ is something they are so proud of and rightly so. Their clients come to them with a vision and they turn that vision into a reality. Born out of a love for all things paperie, Hummingbird Cards was founded by Sally-Ann and their stationery is not only beautifully bespoke but original and a real talking point. Here, we chat with Sally-Ann to find out more; Sally-Ann, why did you decide to start The Hummingbird Card Company? Having worked in fashion and lingerie design, I fell in love with paper cutting while in Tokyo and was looking for a new adventure. Finding laser cutting was the start, which at the time was new to the world of paper! It’s delicate and fragile nature was perfect for weddings and so I combined my passions and started to create stylish wedding stationery. The rest is history and now we create; greetings cards, wedding accessories and precious gifts, along with our new-found love, Letter Press Foil printing! How does the process work from the client giving you the go ahead until the big day itself?
W E TA L K S TAT I O N E RY & UPCOMING TRENDS
We have a sample service, so couples can see, touch and feel the invites before they order. Once a design, colour and font are chosen we create a proof for approval before we go to print. Couples love this part, seeing their names in print really makes it all seem so real and keeps them involved throughout the process.

For those looking for something truly personal and exclusive Hummingbird Cards creates bespoke stationery, to tell a couple’s story, allowing them to work the theme of their wedding into every element of stationery. Initially we have a free chat design consultation over the phone or couples can visit our showroom to go through all their ideas. We then send initial sketches and artwork which is the exciting part, as they start to see their design come to life!

individual finishes that only the precious delicate nature of laser-cutting and the opulent richness of letter press foiling can give, we’re not just printers. We’re loving a touch of shimmer with gold, rose gold and silver right now! We adore trying out new processes and playing with finishing touches, and are spell bound with wax seals and vellum paper right now too. What products do you offer? We create stylish save the date cards, invitations with all the ‘must have’ additional items and those oh so desirable pretty finishing touches such as envelope seals, ribbon ties and handmade envelopes. Also, all the ‘On the Day’ stationery such as Vow booklets, Order of Service / Day cards and booklets, menus, place cards, table plans, table names and numbers, message boxes, guest books and beyond to thank you cards. We also create gifts and keepsakes, styling accessories and decorations for those who desire something a little different for their special day. There are wedding cards for all the wedding party, bridesmaids’ cards, hand-made brides garters, wooden artworks, photograph albums, bride books, keepsakes, and so much more! Tell us about your most popular designs? We keep our main studio collection small and unique from season to season. A design is only ever popular if it fits within a wedding theme or personal story. Couples love to be able to personalise a design so it’s uniquely theirs, by adding a detail such as a monogram. Any invite that is carefully chosen, feels truly special and memorable and gives guests a sneak peek of the exciting day to come is the best ever. What do you love most about working in the wedding industry? We want all couples to be inspired and join us in our whimsical world of designs, created to tell a story, spark the imagination and delight the receiver! We love working with a couple months before the big day and then being lucky enough to see the photos from the big day… it’s a real treat to spend this precious time creating something so special with them. What upcoming wedding trends do you anticipate for 2019? We’re feeling a return for super stylish glamour and an elegant desire for super simplicity. We’re working on a new monochrome collection and love the effect of printing in white. Silver and pewter to be the new gold!!? W W W.

So, what’s the concept behind the Hidden Hive and where did you get the inspiration from? The Hidden Hive is the brain-child of the passionate little ‘expert’ Tipi team here at Peaktipis and was born purely out of our desire to provide affordable Tipi Weddings and Events in an accessible and picturesque location in our home county of Derbyshire. Having the Tipis erected semi-permanently on a specific site, allows us to strip out the labour costs associated with erecting and dismantling the Tipis and then pass that saving on to the end client(s). It also allows us to include lots of wow-factor features within the price of hiring The Hidden Hive such as a solid wooden floor, a giant mirror ball, a dance-floor, a cake stand, fire-pits, bar sections and giant peacock chairs – all of which are optional extras in our and all other Tipi rental business’, again creating unique added-value and differentiation for our client(s). A catering tent, luxury toilets, a generator, heating and all of the behind-the-scenes essentials are also included – it might be The HIDDEN Hive but there’s no hidden costs here! What kind of weddings do you feel are best suited to the Hidden Hive? The Hidden Hive is a secluded rustic, outdoor venue in the heart of the National Forest, surrounded by nature. It’s ideal for couples who

are searching for a relaxed, almost bohemian vibe, but with the added bonus of warmth, glamour and style with our beloved Tipis. Our first year of weddings certainly confirmed its blank-canvas characteristics, allowing couples the freedom to express their own personality and tastes. You’ve also the freedom to plan your day, your way at The Hidden Hive. Other than the fully-managed bar service (which is included in the hire price) you can choose your own suppliers (caterers, florist, photographers etc), or we can recommend our trusted supplier friends who share the same standards and professionalism as us – the choice really is yours! Is the Hidden Hive a seasonal venue? The Tipis will be pitched at The Hidden Hive from April right through to October (inclusive), with bookings available mid-week, weekends – whenever you want your special day to take place! We think spring and summer are undoubtedly the most magical seasons for outdoor weddings, with mildness of climate and all of that beautiful flora and fauna to swoon over. Regardless of the weather, we’ve hand-crafted a solid wooden frontage to the Tipis with doors and large windows, to keep all the warmth inside, whilst still being able enjoy the views out across the meadow.

Are guests allowed to stay over and camp/glamp to make a celebration out of a wedding? We’ve joined forces with our fabulous friends at ‘Tinkers Bells’ to provide luxury glamping bell tent packages. PLUS there’s beautiful glamping pods available at Beehive Woodland Lakes campsite (adjacent to The Hidden Hive) and the ability to pitch your own tents too! All come with the use of warm shower and toilet facilities at the campsite included. Don’t fancy the full festival experience? Don’t worry as The Hidden Hive is just a 5 minute drive from Swadlincote and a 15 minute drive away from Burton-on-Trent, where there’s plenty of local taxi firms available to take you and your guests to a more traditional Hotel, B&B or group accommodation. Whereabouts is the Hidden Hive located? The Hidden Hive is situated in the most southerly part of rural Derbyshire, a very special corner of the National Forest in the leafy suburbs of Rosliston. It is conveniently located off the A38 and a short drive from Derby, Burton upon Trent, Lichfield, Tamworth, Leicester, Nottingham and Birmingham. How do we arrange to come and take a look around the Hidden Hive? Give us a call on 0344 411 3460, or email us on info@thehiddenhive.co.uk and we can arrange a suitable time for you to ‘come take a peek’ at the stunning surroundings and grounds at The Hidden Hive for yourself with our friendly venue coordinator, Danielle. As our Tipis are all tucked up for the winter, if you want to see those too, our next Open Day will be in the Spring on Sunday 28th April, 11am – 4pm. e’ve always had a soft spot for Rachael and Ian (Rachael Connerton Photography). Not only are their images always dreamily stunning, they are two of the nicest, kindest people you could wish to meet. Here’s Rachael talking all about a recent wedding she had the pleasure of shooting, Sarah & Matt; “We’d looked forward to Sarah and Matt’s incredible day for a LONG time. When our cameras are down (which isn’t very often!), we can be found listening to, enthusing about or dancing happily to all things music – other than photography, it’s what we’re both ridiculously passionate about. So when we discovered that Matt owned Bloomsbury Music and Sarah explained the extent to which music would feature in their day, we were just a little bit excited. They travelled down from Manchester to meet us and, we started to talk about music even before we touched on photography.....They then described a music-packed day, a stunning walk to church, and a pole-
55
marquee reception (overlooking a cricket match!). In reality, the day itself was so much more – we lost ourselves in the beauty of the music played during the ceremony, giggled as we climbed over high gates to a stunning boathouse and shot the pure romance of the stunning golden hour alongside pretty festoon lighting as Bloomsbury music started to play. When I asked them both what were their stand-out moments, this was their response”: Matt – “It sounds cliché but my stand-out moment from the day was seeing Sarah for the first time walking down the aisle – wow! Music was always going to be a huge part and it didn’t disappoint, the performance in the ceremony really did blow us away, it was mesmerising. And finally, after our first dance when I could really let my hair down!” (Ray Charles, Hallelujah, I Love Her So) Sarah – “I’ve always wanted to walk to church with my Dad and closest friends. The weather was amazing and so it became a reality. The 0.2 mile walk really calmed any nerves before walking down the aisle. Like Matt, the music in the ceremony really was magical and this set the scene for the day. I felt the day was so perfect that it’s almost impossible to pick a favourite moment!” And over to Sarah for a few more details.... “I’d always dreamed of having an element of the day at my parents’ home. Ashford in the Water is such a pretty village and, as my parents’ home is set within a water mill, it seemed like the perfect setting. The field where the marquee was positioned overlooked the village cricket ground which certainly added to the beautiful English village scene! To really top off the location of the wedding, a neighbour allowed us to use his stunning gardens for a few of our wedding photos. Through a gate (or in our case, over the gate!) was the most beautiful and picturesque grounds with a lake and restored boathouse, the setting was just perfect. Pinterest was just brilliant for my planning. It’s amazing the inspiration you can find on the internet and especially on social media. Our aim was to focus on a country theme with a hint of southern France as this is a place we have spent a lot of time. We’re both creative characters and decided that there were several elements we could design or make ourselves. For example, I made the lavender and sea salt candles for the favours, and, for the boys, it was flavoured macarons. The table themes were French vintage postcards
56
collected on a recent holiday in the South of France. We also had that idea that we’d love a handmade bar; a few scaffolding planks, pallets and cladding and Bob’s your uncle (or in our case, Bob, my dad who very kindly built it!). We wanted quite a natural feel so much of our marquee styling was with flowers, candles and rustic pallets. And finally.....Rachael and Ian. They were incredible from the very initial phone call right through to designing our Queensberry wedding photo album. We couldn’t have imagined a more perfect couple to photograph our wedding and they were both such a calming and positive influence, putting everyone at ease throughout the day. Rachael has also been amazing to work with behind the scenes and we feel so lucky that they were able to shoot our day. We instantly connected with them and our mutual love of music certainly helped!! Rachael and Ian have a real talent for capturing the atmosphere and feeling of the day and presented our wedding story perfectly from start to finish. We both feel like we’ve made two new friends and were blown away with the final photos. Rachael and Ian, thank you for photographing our day and providing us with a stunning collection of all the best moments and memories. We couldn’t be happier and we will definitely be using you again in the future!”

Here he chats to us about a recent wedding he shot and the unique way in which he managed to steal a moment with the bride and groom, with amazing results. "I don’t love taking people away from their loved ones for photos on their wedding day; it feels like an imposition. On the flip side, it is a great idea to step away from the hubbub every now and then and I get my best work when the two of you are alone. At Jo & Al’s wedding they had to get from the ceremony to the reception somehow, and when there is a steam train that does that journey, it seemed as good a way as any. If you can make some time to take in the scene from a distance, and you’ll permit me to come along, it can be awfully pretty. Jo and Al are both artists. "Booking our honeymoon was a tough decision, feeling like it’s one of the most important holidays you’ll be booking and wanting to make it full of memorable, once in a lifetime experiences, I felt the pressure! The only thing I knew is that we wanted to go long haul and with so many amazing places to choose from in the world, the options where endless and a little overwhelming at times. We delayed our honeymoon for a year, so we could save a few more pennies following the expense of our wedding, so this gave us plenty of time to research.
HONEY MOON T I PS !
o, the wedding plans are all ticked off that long list and it’s time to start thinking about your honeymoon. Abbi (one half of Save the Date Magazine) has recently enjoyed a blissful 10 days in the Maldives and is here to tell us all about it this paradise place …
Don’t spend a fortune on shoes. In fact, I was barefoot the whole time! Take a waterproof cover for your phone or camera to capture those amazing underwater moments – the sea life is out of this world! Check if they have any special extras for honeymoon couples. Lots of the resorts offer a special private dining experiences, breakfast in bed and some even offer complimentary honeymoon photo shoots.

After visiting various travel websites, stalking resorts on Instagram, asking lots of friends and family, we decided upon the Maldives. Being that typical person who wasn’t sure if they’d ‘get bored’ being on such a small island in the middle of the turquoise, Indian Ocean, how wrong was I?! The Maldives is the epitome of paradise and I soon realised this within a few minutes of arriving on our first island. Before our stay, I didn’t know much about the Maldives at all and I didn’t realise there were so many islands to choose from, there are 129 in fact! Flying over these small islands in our sea plane is an image that will stay with me forever. It really is true paradise.

Trying to find a resort that felt right for us was a tough decision when they all look so amazing! After chatting to ‘Visit Maldives’ we confirmed our stay at two resorts. The first being the Fushifaru located in the east part of the Maldives. This special island, home to just 49 villas opened just over a year ago. A 35-minute transfer via sea plane from Male (the main airport in the Maldives) to Fushifaru really is a piece of tropical paradise. On arrival, we were greeted with the sound of the traditional Maldivian horn, drum players and were given flower garlands. Whisked into the main reception, we were handed cold towels to refresh (which was much needed after the long journey) and their signature welcome drink. Within minutes of arriving we both felt super relaxed. We were introduced to our host for the week who would cater for all our needs and would be on hand if we had any queries. Escorted to our beach villa which was literally 8 strides away from the sea, we couldn’t believe that this would be our home for the next few days. There are 3 room categories at Fushifaru which all have outdoor bathrooms, with free standing baths and not 1 but 2 showers! For the first hour, we sat on our decking area looking out at the still, calm sea, a little overwhelmed with how perfect it was. Even though Fushifaru is only 1 year old, the giant green palms and island vegetation make it feel like it’s been established for many years. At times I felt like I was walking through a tropical rain forest (without the rain!) which ends with soft white sand at every point. As this is a new resort, the rooms, restaurants and bar area all have exceptionally stylish décor but with a modern Maldivian twist. We were super excited to explore the island, home to a stunning infinity pool, 'Fanihandhi' which is the relaxed poolside bar and 'Korakali' restaurant, offering scrumptious breakfast buffets and international cuisine. Each morning we would stroll around the island at sunrise which took approximately 7 minutes and we would visit the cool #instagramspots which gives this island an edgy, on trend feel. With hanging hammocks, vintage bikes and

We spent our days chilling on the white, powder sands, listening to the relaxed vibes at the Fanihandhi whilst lounging around the infinity pool making our way through the cocktail list. When feeling a little more energetic, we would snorkel around the island looking at all the amazing tropical fish and turtles, explore the ocean on one of their glass bottom kayaks and we even had a little trip to their own private sandbank, where they offer castaway overnight experience! Another once in a lifetime experience. The Heylhi Spa is situated in the heart of the island. Entering the spa, with piped music but still hearing the sea (you can constantly hear the sea on an island this small, it’s so nice) you instantly feel relaxed. Complete with various treatment rooms and plunge pool, I enjoyed a full body coconut soother massage which after a long journey, was a great way to start off the honeymoon relaxation.

The service at Fushifaru is impeccable. All the waiting team remember your favourite tipple, your name and even your favourite bar snack! One evening we dined at their grill restaurant (Raakani) and the chef personally came out to announce each dish in hand. It was exceptional and such a romantic setting. There was various entertainment in Fanihandhi in the evenings, one night we enjoyed a cinema night with popcorn and ice cream! This resort already has returning guests which is without a doubt due to the amazing setting, laid back atmosphere and service. This intimate resort really does have the right balance of luxury, style and relaxed vibes. Their motto of ‘visiting our home’ and ‘creating your own style’ really does ring true and after a few days, the island feels like home and the staff feel like friends. We were sad to be saying bye to Fushifaru after a few days. The island had become like home and we waved to all the staff as we boarded the sea plane to begin our next adventure.

Arriving back into Male, we were greeted by a representative from Huvafen Fushi and taken to their exclusive airport lounge to await our transfer to our next paradise island. We boarded our private speed boat and started the 30-minute transfer. Arriving at sunset was the perfect timing to start the next chapter of our honeymoon. As we docked at Huvafen Fushi, we were super excited to explore another perfect paradise island. We were greeted by the resort staff, and our Thakuru (butler) who would look after us for the next few days. Huvafen Fushi means Dream Island and that it is! This established resort oozes in style and luxury. Our Thakuru escorted us to our room which was just a dream and felt totally luxurious. From Bang and Olufsen speakers, to the outdoor bathroom which was huge! Complete with plunge pool, free standing baths, rainfall shower; we had arrived in paradise. This established resort is in the top 10 resorts to stay in at the Maldives and has a collection of 44 rooms; A mixture of beach bungalows and stilted suites at sea, Huvafen Fushi also has the ‘Play Pen’ (the newest addition to the island) which is the most expensive and luxurious penthouse in the whole of the Maldives. It really is breath-taking! The resort even has a unique cave (called the Vinum) located 8 meters beneath the heart of the island which has 6,000 wines across more than 900 labels with rare vintages and hidden gems! On our first evening we experienced one of their themed taster menus on the beach. It’s here that we had our first taste of the cuisine at this resort and we were totally blown away. This relaxed atmosphere, with lit trees, flaming lanterns and sand between our toes added to the romance of this island.

Breakfast in Celsius each morning was a great start to each day. A round building perched above the sea with stunning views. We loved starting off each morning here, excited for the day ahead. With a waited service, we enjoyed choosing from the largest selection of breakfast options I’d ever seen on one menu! We often started with a detox juice, followed by fruit, a selection of cakes, breads and then onto the main. It was a true feast and we enjoyed working our way through this vast menu. I had the best ricotta pancakes and still dream about these today! The Huvafen Fushi & Pearl, is the resorts stunning Spa. ‘The Pearl’ is the first and ONLY underwater spa in the world! Yes, in the world. On the morning of our couples’ massage, our Thakuru escorted us to the spa. Walking down the stilted wooden walkway I was excited to be experiencing this unique, once in a lifetime experience. Greeted with a welcome drink, robes and slippers we were taken down to the treatment rooms underwater. Totally overwhelmed by the aquarium like feel we both felt truly mesmerised as we watched such an array of fish. It was like being on the set of ‘Finding Nemo!’ We enjoyed a relaxing couple’s massage and a refreshing drink after our treatment in this underwater area. It really was a surreal, dream like experience. Our days at Huvafen Fushi were spent chilling around the infinity pool, enjoying lunch at Forno which has a rustic, boho vibe to it. They made the most amazing stone baked pizzas, made with the lightest of doughs, which Ash enjoyed daily! Whilst we lounged around the pool, the staff were so attentive, bringing us cool water, refreshing towels, fruit kebabs and even rearranging our umbrellas if needed. Their attention to detail is second to none! There is plenty to keep you occupied at this resort, with diving trips and escorted snorkelling trips to their house reef. They even have stingrays

feeding each day on one part of the island which is such a memorable experience. It was lovely to be up so close to these creatures in their natural environment. The resort also has a couple of Dhoni boats (traditional Maldivian sailboats) which we got to experience one evening. We boarded the stunning wooden boats and enjoyed champagne and canapés as we circled our island and watched the sunset on what had been a perfect day. On our last evening, we had cocktails on the stingray beach and then dined at Feeling Koi. This restaurant offers Japanese dining in amazing surroundings; a stilted restaurant out in the ocean. As we walked down the long wooden jetty, we approached Feeling Koi which was lit with pretty lights. Feeling a little apprehensive about Japanese food (as we don’t eat fish or sushi), however, within minutes of our arrival we were assured by the chef that although it’s a Japanese restaurant it is a ‘quirky’ take on this style of cuisine. He talked us through the menu and the food he would be cooking for us shortly. It all sounded amazing, from wagyu beef nachos to truffle salad, ending with a bento box of Japanese desserts. I can honestly say this was the best food we’ve ever tasted and the whole experience was magical. Perched above the sea, the restaurant has open sides and the most luxurious of champagne bars attached. There is something quite magical about the sea at night and with the ocean floor lit, you could sit and watch all of the sea life below. It was the most romantic evening and like being on the set of David Attenborough at the same time! Huvanfen Fushi is a luxurious, timeless resort which offers impeccable service and cuisine but also has a relaxed rustic, Maldivian vibe. I don’t think we’ll ever experience luxury and this level of service again but that’s what made our stay even more memorable. A perfect ending, to a perfect honeymoon.
