uilt in 1789, the magnificent Courteenhall has a rich historical feel to it, boasting a striking Arboretum planted from scratch by the owners. The team only hold a limited number of weddings each year, ensuring exclusivity and flexibility for each and every couple. Melanie and James are here to tell us a little bit more about their big day at Courteenhall. "I loved the idea of an outdoor wedding so a venue with a beautiful outdoor space and a marquee was top of the list. The Arboretum at Courteenhall House provided us with the perfect space for our ceremony. We wanted to have a really personal ceremony that was about us as a couple. We opted for a humanist ceremony to give us the flexibility to do that. Our celebrant helped us write our own vows which was a very special process to us both as it meant the words were unique and personal. We had two readings 'The art of marriage' and 'love is...'which fitted in perfectly as it goes on to talk about trees and roots entwined.

We wanted a soft and romantic palette to run through our dĂŠcor. I wanted lots of greenery and foliage in our floral design to complement the beautiful grounds the estate has to offer. For my wedding bouquet, I wanted something natural and free flowing in a soft romantic style. Being the perfect time for peonies I knew I would be able to get the delicate blousy feel. Sarah Harper Flowers was absolutely amazing and created the perfect arrangement for me. Scent was important to me as I wanted to carry on with the outdoor, romantic theme. We kept the structure loose and natural and used Kate Cullen's gorgeous silks to complement the shape and style. The centrepieces were similar to the bouquets; focusing on scent and elegantly understated. We used olive branches, and peach cotton napkins on the place settings and gold urns and candle holders with tall peach candlesticks to add some extra colour and style to the ivory table linen.

WE ALSO WANTED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE VIEWS OVER THE LUSH GREEN PARKLAND SO PUT SOME OUTDOOR GAMES ON THE LAWN FOR GUESTS TO PLAY.

I have quite a simple style so wanted a wedding gown that was elegantly understated. I loved my dress from Sweetheart Gowns. The back of

the dress was a deal breaker for me and offered a real feature to the dress. James wore a fitted, two-piece navy suit from Moss Bros. The bridesmaids were in peach and I was happy for them to have different styles that suited them as individuals. The groomsmen wore smart navy suits to match James. Our little 2-year-old flower girl (my niece) wore a cute ivory dress from John Lewis. During the cocktail hour, our live band played in the estate grounds. We also wanted to take advantage of the views over the lush green parkland so put some outdoor games on the lawn for guests to play. We chose to have a two-course seated meal for our wedding breakfast followed by a dessert station with a variety of sweet treats and options by Lemon Zest for people to choose from. We had a semi naked cake with three tiers each in different flavours; lemon, vanilla and white chocolate. It tasted as good as it looked! We prefer natural photographs, where spontaneous, candid moments are captured that show how much fun everyone had on the day. It was also important to have a fine art feel to the photos. Ferri Photography was very unobtrusive and captured the day perfectly. It's hard to pick out specific moments that made the day extra special as we had the most amazing day, but the ceremony was very special and exactly how I envisioned - even the weather held out for us!"

Make a statement on your special day with floral wedding centrepieces for your guest tables. Opt for a variety of spring blooms and foliage, and you won’t need to do much else in terms of decorating – let the flowers do all the talking!

Bridal BOUQUETS

Opt for a wild, unstructured bouquet that’s overflowing with greenery and pretty spring posies. We love the thought of using a mixture of pale pink, soft peach and subtle hints of lemon yellow throughout your bridal bouquet for a delicate and romantic feel.

BEAUTIFUL

Buonholes Add a touch of this fabulous season to the groom and groomsmen’s suits with a stylish spring-inspired buttonhole. Make sure it matches your bridal bouquet for an aisle style that is completely coordinated.

15

AWE-INSPIRING

Archways

If you’re lucky enough to be saying ‘I Do’ outdoors, embrace the natural beauty of the setting by asking your florist to create a floral archway. Adorn a wooden or metal archway with your favourite spring flowers. You could add in soft draping curtains for an extra dash of romance – your guests will be talking about your ceremony long after your special day!

Stuck for ideas for your chair covers? Pretty floral garlands look beautiful draped across the back of wooden chairs. You could even tie ‘Mr’ and ‘Mrs’ signs to the back of your chairs to make them stand out.

JARS OF

Flowers Flowers can effortlessly transform any wedding venue so make the most of spring and use delicate jars of blooms throughout your wedding venue décor! Dot them along windowsills, fire places or on your gift table for a nod towards the season. So pretty!

Whether you’re getting married in the glorious sunshine, in a picturesque church or in a chic warehouse, use florals to add a pretty touch to your aisle. You could use them at the entrance of your ceremony, tie small bunches of flowers to the end of the pews or sprinkle soft petals along the floor. The choice is yours, it’s time to get creative!

LUXURY

Romance If you want an ultra-romantic wedding day that oozes luxury, we suggest using oversized statement blooms that are bursting with colour – they’ll be the focal point of your wedding décor, and they’re a fab alternative to traditional spring colour palettes.

Add a floral touch to your aisle style by swapping traditional bridal accessories for a boho-inspired flower crown. It's perfect for a spring celebration and will effortlessly add a hint of colour to your wedding day look. If you're planning a botanical or minimalist celebration, we suggest opting for a foliage-based hair vine.

here’s nothing more flattering on your wedding day than gorgeous, glowing skin (not least because we saw it ALL over bridal fashion weeks). We’re moving away from the ultra matte look of 2017 to a more flattering and hydrated style and I’m here to give you my top tips for getting your skin glowing! Develop a good skincare routine – and stick to it! Your skin will make the biggest difference to the overall look of your makeup so if you only listen to one piece of advice – make it this one! At the very minimum you need to be cleansing, toning and moisturising, morning and night. If you can add an exfoliator in (twice a week) and a serum – even better! Your skin will truly thank you!

THE

When applying skincare, make sure you really work the products in to you skin. Don’t be afraid to be a little rough - rolling on the cheeks with your knuckles and finishing up at the temples will really help to get your blood flowing and since blood carries oxygen – get ready for some serious healthy, glowing vibes! If you really want to give your skin a boost I recommend giving microdermabrasion facials a go. They’re the holy grail of skincare in my opinion! Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive and chemical free form of exfoliation but the removal of dead skin, sebum, oils and blocked pores can’t be a bad thing. Plus you’ll get a collagen surge around three days after – win, win! I love using a radiating primer to give me a glow before I apply my base and this is a good trick for oily babes who are a little bit worried about applying too many hydrating products, which will add to the problem. My favourites for a glow from within (without being greasy) are Illamasqua Radiance Veil and Becca Backlight Priming Filter. I prefer to stick to cream blusher if I’m creating a dewy look as powders can get rid of that gorgeous glow you’ve worked hard to create. I always apply cream blushers to the padded part of my palm as it's the warmest part of the hand and will make the blush easy to work with. Roll your hand up towards your temples for a gorgeous, natural flush. Of course no glowing look would be complete without a bit of highlighter. I’ve got to be honest I’m a bit of a fusspot when it comes to highlighters as I don’t like them to be too obvious and fake looking. Try to pick a highlighter that’s very finely milled so that you don’t get big, obvious glitter chunks. Apply to the top of the cheekbones, nose and Cupid’s bow initially and then do a quick sweep over your entire face to get a real glow. Mac Vanilla Pigment Pot is one of my favourites and suits virtually anybody as it has both golden and pink tones to it! If you’d like to chat some more about your big day beauty, feel free to get in touch.

ow to navigate your way through the wedding dress buying saga; Julia, owner of Frances Day Bridal in Southwell tells us what we should expect ‌ "Whether wedding dress shopping is something you have always dreamt about or not, it is more than likely to be the single most expensive clothing purchase you will ever make. I often think that being a bride is like being promoted to CEO of a huge organisation. You are the boss. You are in charge. You call all the shots. Now on paper this sounds incredible – but the reality of this can often be rather daunting and this is why you need the best team of industry insiders up your sleeve ready to impart all of their wisdom.

Most bridal boutiques operate by appointment only so in the first instance, it is always wise to get in touch and book your slot.

Appointments generally last for an hour and a half, unless you are shopping in London where it is common to only get an hour. During your time in the boutique, you will be guided through the designer collections on offer and be asked to select around five gowns to try on to start with. When our bridal consultant sees you in a gown and understands your body proportions, they will select some ‘wildcards’ for you. It is always really beneficial to keep an open mind during this process. Not every dress is blessed with hanger appeal but with a body in it, it can really make the couture detailing come alive. ‘The Feeling’ – Hollywood has made us all believe that you don’t know it is the one until every member of the bride tribe has had an emotional breakdown and you have seen the bottom of the third box of tissues. This is a myth and rarely/never happens! The best way I can describe the feeling is that you just don’t want to take it off. You often also start subconsciously spinning from side to side in it – this is the loveliest moment to witness. It is common practice that your bridal boutique will need a payment of 50% as a deposit with the remaining 50% being due when your dress arrives. In the case of Frances Day Bridal this is around three months prior to your wedding date. You will be invited back to the boutique around two months prior to your wedding to begin your alterations. The majority of brides need around three fittings. Then finally, the week prior to your wedding we ask you to come and try your dress on for one final check. At this point your dress and veil will have been pressed and packaged ready for you to take home and get married! And one final myth to bust is that you have to have bought your dress nine months to a year prior to your wedding… Rubbish! Well it is at Frances Day Bridal anyway as we are lucky to work with leading bridal designers. We have provided & fitted brand new made to measure gowns in as little as six weeks in the past. Although if everyone did this I would be left with a heart condition… but my point is where there is a will, there is a way! Meet the Maker ELDER & WILD

H

omegrown, natural looking, wild flowers have definitely made a big comeback. Brides are keen to explore a more laid back approach to their bouquets and wedding day blooms so it’s lovely to work with passionate flower growers like Becky at Elder & Wild. Here, we meet her and chat all things flowers … “Our lovely little floristry business was founded my myself, my husband Samuel, who is also an architect, and our fat little tabby cat Margot. We are farmer-florists which simply means that we grow flowers as well as arrange them. We have a cut flower garden where we grow most of the beautiful and unusual flowers we use in our work and what we don’t grow we source from other British growers.

34

W W W.

I have always loved to grow things, particularly flowers, but my background is in fine art. I would grow masses of flowers in our tiny rented garden and started to get hooked on certain flower farming blogs. I couldn’t believe that people could grow flowers for a living! And so the idea of a career change into flower-farming began and I eventually quit my job in the arts to start Elder & Wild. We bought a house with a modest plot that was overgrown with brambles and elderberry bushes (the inspiration for our name) and the cultivation of the garden began. We now grow and arrange seasonal cut flowers for weddings, events and the home from our little Nottinghamshire plot. It’s hard work but I wouldn’t change what I do for anything!

S A V E T H E D A T E M A G A Z I N E .CO.UK

S AV E

THE

DAT E

Our vision for Elder & Wild is to deliver something that is beautiful and sustainable. From seedling to bouquets, our blooms are grown, cut and arranged on-site the natural way; without the use of harmful chemicals or industrial processes. This is something we are quite passionate about, and constantly strive to be better at in each area of our business. Our style has a ‘just picked’, rambling and wild feel, which comes from our desire to work with nature and give it space to breathe. Each season brings its own cocktail of colours, scents and textures, and growing naturally means working seasonally. We design arrangements that make the most of the florals and foliage available throughout the year and so this means that when you come to us for flowers we will build an arrangement around those elements of texture, colour and style rather than specific flowers. Because, although the garden is bountiful, it delivers and blooms in its own time. The week of a wedding, I will walk the beds and pick what is looking its very best to the specific colour palette and style required; we let the season pick the flowers rather than the other way around which leads us to create unique floral compositions. This is what it means to truly arrange with the seasons.”

Growing

Floristry

Our growing season always starts in June when we sow biannual seeds for an early spring crop the following year. September brings with it the most productive time for our cutting flowers and the start of thinking about spring bulbs. Late autumn is for planting bulbs, winter is our down time. We take a break, catch up on admin and do all those garden maintenance jobs we just didn’t get the time for during the busy summer months. February is when the seed sowing begins again and carries on right through to March and May, repeat sowing seeds so that we have a constant supply of our favourites! Then after that, when the greenhouse is crammed full of little plants, we set about getting them into the beds. The process of sowing, and planting lasts all spring and into early summer by which point the garden is really starting to gather pace and there are flowers everywhere! I usually forget to stake some of the taller varieties so we literally have to wade through flowers during some months! Before we know it, it’s high summer, the dahlias are out and we start sowing seeds for the following year and it starts all over again. Somewhere amongst the chaos there are weddings and events!

"Bohemian styling is super hot right now, both in the wedding industry and also in the fashion industry and in homewares. The Boho Botanical shoot was inspired by these current global trends and from the offset we knew that we wanted to include lots of locally sourced macramé details, coloured cut glass, copper tones and highly textured and beautiful florals and greenery. It was important that the chosen venue let in lots of natural light to brighten up our overuse of greenery throughout the shoot and to enhance the moody tone image style by Magda K Photography and we found that the orangery at The Kedleston Country House really was the perfect venue to do just that. For the main wedding breakfast table we started with a macramé table runner base and topped it with a wonderfully lush and textured greenery garland by Mrs Umbels. We added vintage crystal cut candlesticks and coloured dinner candles to create some height and finished the long centrepiece off with coloured glass votives, copper geo touches and green pillar candles. We added feathers to the place settings, added copper charger plates and used giant succulents and English garden roses to really add some extra interest to the styling. We had two fabulous cakes for the shoot created by the wonderful Natasha at The Sweet Stuff. We wanted the first cake to be a simplistic semi-naked cake so that the main focus could be on the surrounding decorations which would in turn help to show off the gorgeous and intricate macramé cake table backdrop handcrafted by Clove & Hitch and the huge copper calligraphy cake signage. We added lots of visually stimulating elements to this cake table to keep the eye interested, including coloured glass bowls and miniature wooden drawers to display the copper painted macarons, and simplistic floral accents. Hanging owl feathers and a variety of dream catchers and ribbons really added to that bohemian vibe. The second cake was a real show-stopper and was a completely original design that was assembled in a real team effort. Natasha created a bespoke macramé cake holder to hang the cake from the orangery ceiling as well as baking the cake, Mrs Umbels added oodles of trailing green foliage and Amy Bailey designed a bespoke creation which was then printed onto icing and wrapped around the first tier of the cake. Gorgeous lace and tulle dresses were provided by Shade Bridal and our models were pampered by Mon Amie Hair and

rom your bridal bouquet to buttonholes, centrepieces to general venue dÊcor, your flowers can have a huge impact on your wedding day! With that in mind, we're talking to Rebecca of Twisted Willow Florist all about big day blooms. A member of our Cream of the Crop Wedding Directory, Rebecca has a huge passion for all things posyrelated, creating some of the most stunning floral arrangements you'll ever see! We've put Rebecca in the spotlight with our recent Q&A, so it's time to find out a little more about Twisted Willow Florist‌ Tell us about Twisted Willow Florist and where it all began?

What is your style?

I'd worked for a number of very talented florists over the years and gained so much valuable experience from it, but I'd always had the yearning to do things the Twisted Willow way. I never thought it would happen. One November while out walking my dog Bailey, I fell and broke my ankle. With hours to kill I started plotting a plan! After weeks of quite literally getting back on my feet I was on the case of getting Twisted Willow up and off the ground. This April we will celebrate our 7th birthday! I guess everything really does happen for a reason!

I love anything loose, rambling and a little bit wild! I'm a huge lover of colours and textures and I'll always add a little bit of willow given the opportunity!

46

W W W.

How do you use floral decorations to add the WOW factor? For me, anything bold and oversized is amazing! I always feel height creates a real impact and there are so many options available in terms of

using your budget wisely. I always try to encourage my couples to think outside the box! What services do you offer as a wedding florist? I love meeting new couples and working together on ideas, which is why we offer an initial consultation in our beautiful new shop, an itemised quote to ensure you know exactly what you are getting for your budget, on hand advice should you need it over the months leading up to your wedding & a guarantee our heart and soul will be put in to your wedding blooms! What do you feel makes your service and flowers stand out from the crowd? We are so passionate about what we do, often getting just as excited as our couples! We don't like playing by the rules and embrace and welcome anything slightly off the wall! Hopefully this comes out through our flowers! What do you love most about being involved in the wonderful world of weddings? Without a doubt making each and every wedding different from the next. What floral trends can we expect to see for 2018 / 2019 weddings? For our 2018 couples it's very much about the ox blood tones with mink and soft blush tones. We're also seeing a huge amount of Boho Tropics coming though for 2019‌we can't wait!! Which flowers are the most popular for weddings? The one I always get asked about is the Queen of blooms herself, the peony! It's such a shame she's not able to grace us with her presence all year round! I feel roses are often undervalued as being the "norm" but there are so, so many amazing and unusual colours, scents and variations out there to suit all styles and colours of weddings. What is the best way to get in touch with you?

registrar spoken to about how they want us to operate during the service. Photographing during the service can vary massively. Always professional, we sometimes have the blessing to operate fairly freely, other times we can only shoot the signing. We always ask our couples to check this out in advance. Before you know it, the newlyweds are up the aisle bursting into daylight. Amongst the excited chatter and celebrations, one of us focuses on the bride and groom, the other on candid and organising the confetti shot. Quick jump in the car and a drive to the reception. This is the time to get the images that the bride & groom love to see; the moments they miss as they mingle with their guests. Group shots next! Once that is done and dusted, it's our first chance to congratulate and share in the excitement as we whisk the newly weds away for a bit of quiet time and some considered stylistic portraiture work - we LOVE this time. Next it's the speeches. This is all about capturing the emotions, from tears to laughter. It's not the first time in the day that I have been brought to tears too. Get ready for the first dance by setting up our flashes and light stands and then PARTY TIME! People really let their hair down and have fun with the camera. Then it's home time! All our couples feel like friends by this point as we've witnessed the love and happiness between them and their guests all day long. We always drive home crazily happy and slightly wired, ready to start the download of our cards and the back up operations. And often can't help but have a sneaky peek of what we have created. No wedding is ever the same and that is what makes this job one of the best jobs ever!"

eaulieu Photography were on hand to capture Mel and Dan's charming wedding day at Grove Barn and we just knew we had to share it with you! Mel found many of her suppliers at The Wedding Event With A Difference (savethedateevent.co.uk) and we think you're going to be seriously inspired by their special day. We'll hand you straight over to the bride to find out a little more about their rustic yet romantic celebration‌ "As soon as we got engaged we knew we wanted to have a wedding that allowed us to put our own stamp on our day. We wanted to create a celebration that was modern, considered and very much us. Food was important to us and we had been recommended Goose on the Loose by a friend, so we knew they could deliver a unique dining adventure. We also knew Mike who runs Gorilla Events so we knew the bar was sorted, and now it was just to find the venue!

We stumbled across Grove Barn after a lot of searching and driving the length and breadth of the country to look at various dry hire venues. We fell in love with the character of the building, the exposed bricks and the space! We had our ceremony at Bridgford Hall. Our service was fun and personable, and very much us, being able to write our own promises was a lovely touch. While wanting to keep things rustic to be in keeping with the barn, we also wanted to make sure it still looked modern and considered - from the table settings to the bridesmaids, to the flowers and the vows. Marble and copper created a loose theme we had running through the wedding as our invitations were on marble paper. When it comes to floral centrepieces, we knew we wanted tapas dining and we knew it would require lots of plates and this meant it would take up so much space on the table. Only one thing for it, the flowers needed to be suspended! We decided to suspend some copper plumbing pipes. Ivy and eucalyptus were twisted around each pole, along with sprayed viles housing cream flowers which were then further suspended from each pole. We wanted our guests to have a great experience, we were getting all the people we loved together in one room and this meant a lot to us. For our favours we wanted our guests to have something to take away with them to remember the day. We love succulents and thought these would act as great dĂŠcor on the table settings too, the greyish green tones worked so well with the copper. Dan wore a Reiss Navy suit jacket with a grey waistcoat, a crisp shirt and pale pink chinos. My dress was from Hermione de Paula and it had our wedding date stitched onto one cuff, our initials stitched onto the other cuff and then around the hem I had the lyrics from our first dance Coldplay's - 'Something Just Like This'. The colour was a very subtle pink, with beading and embroidery. My bridesmaids wore a beautiful chiffon caped wide leg jumpsuit from Zara and they looked amazing on the day! We had a video compiled by Alice Goulding, and it would be the best piece of advice I would give to any couple, have a wedding video, we were blown away by ours! All in all, we loved our day, we were very proud of what we pulled together and that everyone had a fantastic time."

hether you've been dreaming about your big day since childhood, or always believed you'd never say, "I do", nothing quite prepares you for the extensive planning and organising that goes into the big day. With tens of thousands of venues and suppliers all claiming to do weddings best, navigating the planning minefield can be a daunting task. Here, Michelle Clarke, Senior Events Manager at Breadsall Priory Marriott Hotel & Country Club, reveals how you can have an unforgettable wedding day, courtesy of the stunning Derbyshire venue.

1

Your Wedding Your Way

The key to creating a wedding day to remember is establishing exactly what 'your wedding, your way' means to you. Properly understanding what it is that'll ensure your vision comes to life all comes down to thorough organisation. The wedding team at Breadsall Priory are all committed to helping brides and grooms achieve their fairytale wedding. Owed to their wealth of experience, they can offer expert knowledge and advice about the best suppliers and details to complement your wedding look book.

Utilise the Great Outdoors

S AV E

THE

DAT E

The 'woodsy' wedding theme has grown ever more popular of late, and fortunately, owed to the acres of lush greenery surrounding Breadsall Priory, it isn't a hard theme to achieve. Nature, and all its beauties, presents endless outdoor themed wedding opportunities, which can help to make your big day extra special. Think tipis, marquees, food vans and jumbo outdoor games.

Relax Beforehand with Spa & Golf

5

3

We know weddings can be stressful, and with all the planning and organising that goes into making sure the day runs smoothly, brides and grooms often forget to relax. We always encourage brides and grooms to stay with us prior to their wedding day and enjoy a fun-filled, stress-free afternoon with their respective wedding parties. With the hotel featuring two golf courses, a spa retreat and a restaurant, there is perfect opportunity to find an escape from any pre-wedding jitters.

Attend Showcases

Find the Best Spots for Photos

Big days can often pass by in a blur, so it's important to make sure the celebrations are captured in the best way possible. Luckily, Breadsall Priory's picturesque woodland backdrop and historical grandeur can translate superbly into photography; creating some of the most dramatic and - in some cases - award-winning photography in the Midlands. Since Breadsall Priory is renowned for being the oldest Marriott in the world, with rooms dating back to 1260, its historical intricacies offer unique photo opportunities, far from the traditional wedding image.

6

It can be such a scary prospect, not knowing how your wedding could look until the big day itself. Fretting about whether the venue can fit enough chairs comfortably, or whether your theme will go well with the venue's dĂŠcor, can be easily avoided if you take advantage of any wedding showcases that are organised before your big day. Breadsall Priory holds regular events throughout the year, where suppliers showcase their services and rooms are dressed for a big day.

4

Find the Right Deal There is no pride lost in hunting for exceptional wedding deals; particularly with the average UK wedding averaging a total cost of over ÂŁ27,000. Often, couples delay sealing their nuptials due to the soaring costs the celebrations can accumulate, which can be an upsetting fate. In an aim to make weddings less intimidating and more inclusive, Breadsall Priory often runs competitive wedding deals, quite like the current late availability package for 2018. With this, affianced couples can enjoy a 2018 wedding at a fraction of the cost.
