If you are dreaming of an outdoor ceremony find a venue with an outdoor location, once you have found the perfect venue there are some super pretty ways you can style your outdoor ceremony. I love the idea of entering the ceremony through wooden doors, these remain shut until the bride and her father enter through them. To create the aisle, hang jam jars filled with pretty blooms from shepherds crooks, or if the ground is not suitable for shepherds crooks tie apothecary bottles to the chairs and add a flower. Guests will love all these pretty details. If you are not opting for an outdoor ceremony but are lucky enough to have some sunshine on your wedding day you will no doubt be wanting to make the most of it. There are lots of lovely ideas for decorating outdoor spaces, hang pom poms and bunting around the grounds. Choose a feature tree and hang apothecary bottles each filled with a flower from the branches or even long strands of ribbon in your wedding colours.

LIGHTING

Take the entertainment outdoors, a string quartet set up outside for an outdoor ceremony is always a lovely touch. Set up games outdoors, these will be enjoyed by children and adults! We have seen wedding guests enjoying sack races, giant jenga, croquet and children love piñatas. Guests will enjoy spending time outdoors right through to the evening, so don’t forget to enhance the gardens with lighting. Whether you choose tea lights in jam jars or larger lanterns, or opt for strings of light bulbs from the trees this will light up the grounds beautifully. Paper lanterns work perfectly for weddings and are easy on the budget, just add a long lasting tea light and they will glow for hours. At The Wedding of my Dreams we sell a collection of paper lanterns and especially love our JUST MARRIED lanterns which are fab for photos!

eet Ben and Hannah of HBA Photography, they live in a little village in Derbyshire and were voted Wedding Photographer of the year for the East Midlands in 2013 and here they tell us about one of their beautiful weddings and how they work. Our couples tend to be genuinely lovely people and Chris & Emma were no exception! Emma is from a little village in Staffordshire and met Chris when she went over to New Zealand during the ski season.

to know our couples, and an even better way of getting them to trust us and relax around the camera, especially if they’ve never had professional photos taken before. For their wedding they wanted a beautiful but relaxed day, nothing too formal and were keen to have fun and not take it all too seriously. This fitted in perfectly with the way we work, not too many group photos which take up loads of time and we’re always keen to capture moments as they happen rather than setting up anything too contrived and cheesy.

We’d met Emma & Chris again a few weeks before their wedding for their pre-wedding photo-shoot and they told us all about their plans. We love engagement shoots as its such a great way to get

On the day, the weather was gorgeous. We headed back to the marquee after the ceremony and it was time for a few family photos and then lots of more relaxed photography – standing back and just

photographing everyone talking, the children playing, guests listening to the ukulele player, Emma chatting with her Dad and Chris catching up with his family who still live in Australia. These are always the best photos, and the ones that people love to see over and over again. We of course captured all the details too… the gorgeous cake and macaroon towers, the centre pieces with influences from England & Australia – roses and eucalyptus. The raspberry jam favours and vintage ski postcards for the table names. After dinner, the speeches are a very important time, it’s a great opportunity for us to photograph people when they are at their most relaxed and have had a glass of wine - their reactions to the speakers are often some of my favourite images from the wedding day – all the laughter and the tears – it’s what weddings are all about!

Then as the evening draws in, it’s time for the party to start and again - it’s time for us head to the dance floor and photograph all the fun. ee Garland, photographer and founder of Vintagebooth.me tells the story of his incredibly unique vintage booth and the journey it’s taken so far; “Way back in Aug 2012 I photographed a wedding in France, for Bex + Mark. Bex really wanted a photo booth, something I didn’t have at the time. Nor, I have to be honest, did I really yearn to have one. I loved the idea of a photobooth, but all the ones I’d seen didn’t exactly make me swoon. It seemed as if the booth was a penalty the couple had to pay in order to get the fun shots of their friends and family, rather than something you’d really want to see at your carefully coordinated wedding. But to her credit, Bex was persistent and couldn’t find one in the Pyrenees - so I agreed to see what I could do. Two things I knew; I wanted their guests to genuinely be able to let loose in the booth, and I wanted the booth itself to look gorgeous. It couldn’t therefore be me with a camera on a tripod, a box of props - asking people to pose. The route to genuine inhibition lies not there - they needed to be on their own, taking their own photos. Secondly, I had to reinvent the booth, because what I’d seen at fairs looked like the ‘booth’ itself was afterthought.

34

W W W.

And so, vintagebooth.me was born. We coded the software from scratch, so that we didn’t have to rely on clunky LCD touch screens, and instead operated the whole thing through a single button, mounted in a church collection box. A view camera is hands down the handsomest camera to behold, and naturally makes you smile before you’ve even picked up a moustache. You’re only waiting 30 seconds for your big, black & white print to drop out, free from garish branding and clip-art. The booth went down a storm in France, and from a nervous start watching it sweep off on an airport conveyor belt we’ve now got three staff, two booths and two vans, bringing joy genuine hilarity to weddings and all manner of events. The cast of Downton have been in it at The Savoy, Bar Mitzvahs in the walkways of Tower Bridge and it’s been on tour with an entire replica of prohibition-era Cuba, for Bacardi. We achieved what I wanted - a photo booth I could be proud of, and one that you can be proud to have at your wedding. We hope to see you in the booth soon.” Lee, Thom + Vic x vintagebooth.me

elcome to the wedding of Elizabeth and Stuart at the beautiful Holme Pierrepont Hall.

Here, Robert Brackenbury, owner of this stunning venue tells us about this special day: “It was the 4th July 2013, American Independence Day and the first real warm day of the summer when the temperatures soared and the sun shone. The warmth in the air, along with the gardens which were in full flower, with the roses and lavender out in the Courtyard Garden, just added to what was a special wedding. The Matthews family who descend from an American branch of the Pierrepont family used the house for their daughter, Elizabeth’s wedding. The family ties were important and as they progressed through the day they were looked down on by pictures, many of whom were their ancestors. The Matthews guests, all from the USA came over specially. The Medieval Lodgings played host to the Wedding Ceremony. Their family and friends then entered the Courtyard Garden to the sounds of a string quartet playing as they drank champagne and ate canapés. The Long Gallery was set up with one long table for everyone to sit at covered in incredible flowers. In the evening, the East Garden was spectacularly lit up with a display of lights

under the trees. A magnificent fireworks display in the front park rounded the evening off. A perfect day here at Holme Pierrepont Hall.” The bride Elizabeth tells us her thoughts about her special day: “I frequently daydream back to our wedding day - I love thinking about the joy we felt, the sense of family and the beauty of Holme Pierrepont. I can’t imagine a prettier or more meaningful setting. Stuart and I were married in a civil ceremony at The Lodgings, the oldest part of Holme Pierrepont, followed by a Blessing of Marriage ceremony at St. Edmund’s, where my ancestors were married, worshipped and are now buried. The gardens were blooming, and our florist did a magnificent job bringing natural beauty inside. One of Stuart’s and my favourite memories was standing on the front lawn watching the fireworks with our family surrounding us. And playing croquet on the side lawn during cocktail hour was a big hit with our guests. Stuart and I feel very fortunate to have found each other and were delighted to have our wedding in such a beautiful place.” Images courtesy of Michael Penty Photography

ere, we bring you the wedding of Rachael and Alexander in the heart of rural Derbyshire;

“We were married in St Peter’s Church, in the village of Edensor, which is located on the Chatsworth Estate within the heart of the Peak District National Park. As a child, I undertook many walks around the Chatsworth Estate and so having my fairy tale wedding at St Peter’s was a dream come true. Our reception venue was Thornbridge Hall, Great Longstone, a large private country house with beautiful gardens. We used the amazing Carriage House for our wedding breakfast, complete with its own stage and dance floor for the live band. The Carriage House even has its own secret underground bar for those who had the stamina! I wouldn’t say we followed a particular style, but we wanted to achieve a look that felt both timeless and traditional, with some quirky additions to reflect our personalities, such as ushers in bowties, fun icebreakers on the table and a handmade seating plan which I painted. Music was also an important part of our day, with my sister’s piano teacher on the church organ, a very interactive and entertaining jazz band during the reception drinks, the father of the bride playing the first few bars of the first dance and an awesome live band for the party. I tried on over 40 dresses, and I hated wedding dress shopping by the time I actually found ‘the one’. I wanted something different, a little boho, but grand enough for our church and reception venue and totally timeless. I eventually found my dress in Kula Tsurdiu Lace Market Bridal Boutique in Nottingham. It was the second dress that I

42

W W W.

tried on in the shop, and the first dress that Kula ever designed. It was absolutely beautiful. Very ‘Grace Kelly’ in terms of style which nipped me in around the waist with a strapless top half with tiny buttons down the back. I designed the headdress myself with the help of Kula who handmade it for me – it really completed the look. Where possible, we wanted to use people that were as local as possible, so the evening food was a hogroast prepared by New Close Farm in Bakewell, our florist being the amazing Beau Blossom in Great Longstone and the musical entertainment for the wedding breakfast being the locally renowned Robert Ludlums band. Thornbridge Hall’s in-house wedding planner helped make our day run very smoothly. For the main band we stumbled across The Beatfactor who were simply fantastic. We also used Sarah Burke, the brides best friend and maid of honour, to design the wedding stationary, all of which looked divine. Our photos were taken by Ed Godden, who was a really friendly, down to earth but highly professional, photographer who took lots of amazing snaps. We travelled slightly further afield for the wedding car, Dennisson Classic Cars in Nottinghamshire, who were again really friendly and organised. We of course used our friends talents and skills where possible, to save a little on the cost, with Rebecca Horn making us her first ever wedding cake, which was simply stunning and Nick and Victoria preparing our wedding video. My advice for brides to be would be you only do it once, so keep calm, have a ball and try and enjoy every minute of it.” All images courtesy of Ed Godden Photography

A huge emerging trend in wedding-ville has got to be the flower crowns. Over taking the veil, the tiara and any other fancy headwear, the flower crown is the style to be donning on your big day. Making a bold and striking statement, an arrangement of beautiful blooms adorning your head can be a real show stopper. The look is bang on trend, gorgeous, creates a talking point and most of all, style icon, Kate Moss started the ‘flower crown’ ball rolling at her quintessentially English wedding in the Cotswolds.

Of course, children at weddings has its draw backs. You have to allow for the occasional shriek during the ‘I do’s’ and you have to be prepared for your friends not being able to let their hair down quite as much as they would should they be child free. But you also have to consider how close you are to the children you know. Perhaps you have nieces or nephews or even your own children who are clearly on the invite list. If you don’t want too many kids descending upon you, perhaps you could just invite a handful; maybe just family. Alternatively, you could leave it up to the guests themselves. Tell them that kids are welcome but if they’d prefer to arrange a baby sitter and come along for a boozy, dancing until the early hours affair then that’s fine too. I’m sure you’d be surprised at how many of your guests would take the opportunity for a day/night off to be foot loose and baby/kid free!

How do you envision your big day? Could you think of nothing worse than organising a kids area and making do with highchairs dotted around at your wedding breakfast and pushchairs parked outside your marquee? Or would you embrace having a bunch of little ones running around, making everyone laugh, looking adorable and adding to the fun atmosphere of the day?

ids at a wedding. A topic which strikes up serious debate time and time again. Do you invite them? Don’t you invite them? Do you risk offending your friends who have kids if you tell them they’re not invited? Do you risk your wedding becoming a crazy creche if you do decide to ask them along? Tricky.

nspiration for Rachel’s work comes from the natural world, antique jewellery and the Art Nouveau movement of the 20th century and this reflected in the style of her work which features free flowing natural lines and plant inspired forms. For those wanting a more ethical alternative to conventional wedding and engagement rings Rachel offers the option of the Fair-trade and Fair-mined gold, found in her Briar Rose collection, featuring a selection of limited edition rings that can be set with any stone. The Bridal Collection compliments the Precious Collection and features a series of must have pieces including handmade tiaras, chokers, bracelets and hair accessories, each piece has been individually crafted and designed to suit varying styles of bridal wear. Each collection created by Rachel incorporates the use of the wide

range of precious metal combined with the myriad of gemstones available to today’s modern jewellery makers. At the forefront of Rachel’s design work are ethical choices in materials that are registered with the Fair-trade Foundation for the Use of Fair Mined Gold; likewise locally sourced and British suppliers is an important part of Rachel’s business ethics, and this is reflected in her membership of the British Jewellers Association.

e wanted a venue where the ceremony would be walking distance to the reception, but also wanted to be married in a church. We liked the Riding School, as partly it is a beautiful and spectacular space in its own right, but it is also a ‘blank canvas’ which meant we could completely do our own thing. Finally, being able to go back and visit the place we got married for years to come, is something that is really important to us. The wedding had a rustic and vintage feel, but we really wanted some bright colours and textures to reflect the time of year. We used bright pastels most notably with the ceiling ribbons commissioned from Fabric Theatre. [www.fabrictheatre.co.uk] Ultimately, we wanted the feel of the day to reflect our personal tastes and everyone that knows us would recognise us in the final result. We put a lot of time into creating as many of the details

ourselves by hand. From wooden signs for the driveway, handstitched flags for people to wave, place names incorporating corks from the bottles of wine we’ve shared over the years, a chalk-board menu made from an old door, and DANCE lightup marquee sign letters, we spent countless hours preparing. Music was a big part of the day. David created some beautiful recordings of music which I walked down the aisle, and we left together to. A friend sang an original song during the wedding service, the maid of honour sang with another good friend (they go by the name ‘KaBen’ if anyone’s looking for some talented musicians) to kick off musical proceedings in the evening (including our first dance), a bigger band of friends put together a funky-soul set of music to really get people dancing, and finally the DJs (more friends) played the night out. TIME MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING ARE KEY

I’d seen Jolly Edition through their Etsy store a couple of years ago, and we instantly knew they were the stationers for us. [www.jollyedition.com] Natalie at Yummy Little Cakes was an absolute pleasure to work with from beginning to end. The cake table that resulted - 3 cakes, macaroons, meringue kisses, cookie cupcakes and more - was spectacular and a real talking point. [www.yummylittlecakes.co.uk] Helen at The Flower Mill instantly got the look and feel we were going for. This included bringing to life a particular favourite image we’d seen of flowers draped over a suspended beam above

the top table – the result was even better than the original and we completely loved it. [www.theflowermilldraycott.co.uk] What can we say about Lee Garland’s photography? His pictures speak for themselves. In our eyes, no-one comes close to capturing people’s special day so brilliantly. He’s also one of the friendliest and personable people, and working with him was one of the easiest and best experiences we had. [www.weddings.leegarland.co.uk]

Nottingham designed and made my dress for me. [www.kulatsurdiu.co.uk]. I couldn’t praise their work more highly. I always looked forward to my fittings, not only for the joy of seeing the dress developing each time but the chats with Laura, Kula and Jeff. I once spent 3 hours in the shop just sorting out my veil (which actually only took about 20 minutes) because we were chatting away. I will really miss seeing them every few weeks! In addition I have to mention both my hairdresser (Katie Layton – www.imamobilegirl.com) and make-up artist (www.Claire-Elizabeth.com) as they both did an amazing job.

Time management and planning are key – do not underestimate the sheer number of hours that a relatively minor seeming task can gobble up. We’re possibly not the most organised people in the world, but the few weeks leading up to the wedding were crazily busy. It will be stressful at times but at the end of the day you have to think about what you both want and why you’re doing it all in the first place.
