e at Save the Date Magazine adore Matt Horan. Not only is he an awesome photographer who captures the most stunning images, he’s a great guy too. So, we couldn’t wait to share some of his latest work with you in the form of this romantic, dreamy photo shoot. Over to Elle ( The creator of the fabulous doughnut cake on the front cover) to tell you more about the shoot... “The idea for a styled shoot evolved from a conversation between a group of creative friends. The plan was to bring together, compliment and showcase our individual talents - from photography to calligraphy - to share with engaged couples looking for a little inspiration. From this the Wedding Collective was born. This was the first time we’ve all worked together. A collaboration that felt just right - an exciting and enthusiastic meeting of creative minds, with a shared sense of style and fun.
flowers and a little bit of patisserie magic. Kayleigh’s contemporary hand-lettering added finery and delicate detail to menus and signs with a focus on simple craftsmanship. Rachael’s beautiful cinematography was the icing on the cake - ethereal and dreamlike, the short film has captured the magic of the afternoon perfectly (You can watch the film over on the blog very soon at savethedatemagazine.co.uk). Our model Selma wore a stunning, simple, and sophisticated sheer slip dress from Ghost. The make-up by Joella, enhanced Selma’s natural beauty, with berry stained lips and smokey eyes. While hairdresser Elle, added soft flowing waves combined with an elegant floral headpiece. And of course Mother Nature played her part - we were blessed with soft light and a gentle breeze. If only we could promise good weather for every wedding we worked at!”
A beautiful garden in Nottingham provided a serene, natural woodland backdrop for our shoot. With a focus on seasonality we wanted to create and capture a soft, tonal, romantic stage for our bride, in the dream-like quality of late afternoon light. Simple, beautiful, but with a touch of the theatrical. Matt’s photography is all about storytelling. His use of detail and strong emphasis on using the available natural light captured the atmosphere of the day. Louise’s fluid and unstructured approach to floral design offered a wildly romantic selection of rustic pastels and greenery with roses and peonies billowing within textured greenery and foliage. I created a collection of show-stopping cakes for a dessert table, combining seasonal flavours with elegant decorations of edible

A T R U E TA L E O F R O M A N C E . Where did you get married and what was it about the venue that sealed the deal? We were married in my local village church. It’s really special to me because it’s where I was christened and remember being a bridesmaid at my godmother’s wedding there when I was younger. I love the walk up to the church in particular, which is at the top of a small hill – although on the wedding day it was quite interesting to negotiate with heels! Our reception was held in the grounds of my parents’ house. This was brilliant as it gave us a blank canvas to create exactly what we wanted! How would you describe the style of your wedding and what made you decide to go down that route? We decided to style the day as an English country fair, fairground and all – complete with swingboats, a strong man striker, ice cream stall and coconut shy! I also love bunting so we put up over 1km of it around the garden and marquee…. All made by my mother in law and her team of bunters! We also asked our guests to send personalised pieces of bunting to wish us good luck. This was hung all around the marquee and was a great talking point for everyone. Talk us through the suppliers you used for your wedding from stationery to cake, flowers to cars - was there anything quirky or creative which will inspire future brides? Finding the perfect photographer was crucial to us both. We asked Rachael Connerton to take our photos and can’t recommend her highly enough! From the word go, we got on really well with Rachael and her husband Ian, which was so important in helping us feel at ease in front of camera. As well as being lovely people, they took exactly

the type of wedding photos we wanted: natural and never posed. We used the wonderful Hummingbird Stationers, and their amazing personalised stationery. Sally-Anne spent time with Giles and I so we could create a beautiful laser cut invitation with personalised designs that illustrated our lives together in Paris and London. I am in the extremely lucky position to have one of the most talented mothers in England. I left the cake design completely up to her and she produced a masterpiece. We used Blossom Tree Flowers based in Melbourne. I loved the idea of flowers that looked like they had just come from the garden and Kerry really understood the style of wedding we were going for. She was brilliant on the day and even gave my mum and mother in law seeds of the flowers used in my bouquet so that they could grow their own in their gardens - a really thoughtful touch. We used Simon Bond marquees, but he does so much more than just marquees! He had the perfect old fashioned pole marquee in keeping with our country fair theme and knew just how to add the finishing touches. We cannot praise him, his wife and his brilliant team enough! After a disaster and our original band pulling out with six weeks to go, we happened upon the superb Coverups! They truly were testament to the saying: everything happens for a reason! Not only did they prepare for every eventuality to ensure that the entertainment went smoothly in the run up to the day they also had an amazing playlist which got everyone on the dance floor. As well as having a very talented mother, I also have an equally talented mother in law who

designed and made my younger bridesmaids dresses. My aunt made a ton of strawberry and champagne jam for favours and the gents were given my dad’s famous piccalilli! Red Olive Caterers were simply amazing. The food was impeccable and Charlie really did look after us on the day. My grandma said that on your wedding day you should try to “look like yourself on a really good day,” that’s what I would advise any other bride, there is nothing worse than a bride who looks like a totally different person, they only end up feeling uncomfortable. That and don’t forget your flip-flops!” Suppliers: All images courtesy of Rachael Connerton Photography www.rachaelconnertonphotography.co.uk www.hummingbirdcards.co.uk www.theblossomtree.co.uk www.bondmarquees.co.uk Catering – www.theredolive.co.uk

t our last Wedding Event with a Difference (#WEWAD) in February, Nottingham based jewellers Temprell launched a competition to win your wedding rings. And here, bride to be Nicola describes what it feels like to find out you are the lucky winner…
noticed an email from Temprell with the sub heading ‘Competition Announcement’ as I clicked it I said to my mum ‘Temprell have announced the winner of their competition’ quickly followed by ‘EEEEEEpppp I’ve WON! it says my name!!’ We jumped up and down frantically in our seats squealing!
Congratulations on winning this amazing price at WEWAD Nicola, what was your first reaction? ‘EEEEEEEEpppppp!!!’ I was on the train with my mum on mother’s day and decided to check my emails on the way there as I hadn’t checked them for a few days, I remember the conversation well because I said to my mum ‘Sorry mum I’m being anti-social its Mother’s Day and I’m checking my emails’ as I scrolled through I
Talk us through the process so far …. For me our first consultation at Temprell was the easiest process of our wedding planning so far as I’d already fallen in love with my ring. Leanne warmly welcomed us into the beautiful store whilst Lee and I tried so very hard to control our excitement! Aaron kindly greeted us with congratulations and the conversations between us all began to flow. I just remember being sat there thinking am I actually about to

Lee tried on several designs and fell in love with a particular style adding a touch of rose gold to his design. Aaron digitally demonstrated how our rings will be made from start to finish which we filmed using our phones for an extra special keepsake. The day I photographed the diamonds being set into my ring was truly incredible! I can’t thank the team enough for allowing me to stay in their workshop from start to finish. Art the goldsmith at Temprell was just amazing! The entire team allowed me to wonder around their workshop capturing the entire process from start to finish. Two of the many highlights was when Aaron handed me the bag with my diamonds in to have a play around with in the workshop and when Art sized my ring to my finger during the process of him sizing my ring so it really is a perfect fit!! I watched my ring transform from what can only be described as a mechanical looking object to a beautiful bespoke diamond wedding ring sized to perfection. Lee and I recently collected our beautifully presented bespoke rings to take home and we could not be happier! The entire process at Temprell has been incredible! We cannot thank the amazing team Aaron, Raun, Leanne, Charlotte and Art enough for all their time and effort spent with us in making our wedding ring journey so enjoyable and memorable. Can you describe your ring? Sparkly! I had no idea what wedding ring I wanted until I attended the Save the Date Wedding event in Nottingham when I met Raun from Temprell. I browsed the wedding rings on their stand and it really was

love at first sight. I tried on a sparkly diamond white gold wedding band that sat perfectly with my engagement ring and I didn’t want to take it off! Raun kindly let me take a photo of me wearing the wedding ring then my heart sank when he revealed the price. I had no concept of how much wedding rings cost as I’d not been looking having been pre occupied with other aspects of our wedding planning. Raun introduced me to the competition Temprell were running and suggested I should enter, so before I left the stand and finally gave back the ring I scribbled my details down on the card and handed it in. I’ve never won a competition before so I wasn’t holding onto any hope that I would actually win. Lee also fell in love with a wedding band during our consultation at Temprell. Lee fell in love with the idea of a two toned wedding band choosing a white gold band with a rose gold running through the middle of the band, it’s stunning!! How have you enjoyed your experience with Temprell? The entire team at Temprell are just incredible! They have made our wedding ring experience so memorable. Not only do we have two incredibly beautiful bespoke wedding rings we have a special story attached to them. I never imagined that our wedding ring process could have been as amazing as this! Lee and I are extremely sentimental and we will treasure the photos and entire process that Temprell have given us. Our wedding bands not only symbolise the eternity for our future they also hold a very special story. om Browns is a stylish wedding venue sat on the banks of the River Trent. Here we chat with their wedding coordinator Becki; Becki, what is your role at Tom Browns? My role at Tom Browns is Assistant Restaurant Manager & Wedding Coordinator How would you describe weddings at Tom Browns? If I could describe weddings at Tom Browns it would be that we are a picturesque venue with beautiful surroundings that create a bespoke tailor made wedding day. What makes Tom Browns stand out as a wedding venue? With over 30 years’ experience, we stand out for a number of reasons, we create a bespoke menu designed by you. Serving you and your guest’s fresh local 2aa rosette food in a beautiful modern Victorian school house. What’s the most popular comment or feedback you receive from wedding guests or couples who get married at Tom Browns? ‘We had our wedding reception at Tom Browns on 9.9.14 which, as luck would have it, was a gloriously sunny day. My husband and I
wanted a venue that was relaxed and represented a little of what we are about and as we are both foodies we thought we would look into Tom Browns. We couldn’t have been happier with our decision: the riverside setting was perfect, the staff were second to none in making everything flow perfectly and the food was beautiful. Personally, I liked being able to offer our guests menu choices. I will say I was a little apprehensive about the wedding being set across essentially 3 rooms but I needn’t had as the atmosphere was fantastic throughout which the attentiveness of the staff helped massively to foster. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this venue to other brides and grooms and would like to say a massive thank you to Sarah who helped organise the event with such genuine warmth that the whole experience was made much more enjoyable. Clare and Stefan.’ Describe the style of wedding which you see fits the Tom Browns signature style? Our signature style is creating bespoke weddings with a modern twist using our beautiful terrace for arrival drinks overlooking the river treat while enjoying our Canapés while talking with your guests. Moving into the old Victorian school house for a delicious 3 course wedding breakfast designed by yourselves. Finishing the night with fantastic music to dance your first night as newlyweds away. www.tombrowns.co.uk Trentside, Gunthorpe, Nottingham NG14 7FB 0115 9663 642

Over to Elizabeth; “It’s like stepping back in time!” exclaimed one guest as she stepped through the village hall. In the background she could hear dream a little dream and the bustle of the other guests taking their seats at tables full of delicious food served on stunning vintage china. The scent of freshly picked flowers filled the air as the handmade bunting gently blew in the breeze … this was three years ago, on my wedding day, that everything stops for tea was born. Here at everything stops for tea we offer everything you could need to make your day truly special. Nothing says elegance and style like the quintessentially classic Afternoon Tea. re you inviting children to your wedding? If the answer is yes have you thought of ways to make them feel special when they arrive at their table? You could make each child a little gift bag, this will not only make them feel special but will also keep them entertained throughout the wedding breakfast and speeches. If you are inviting a number of children to your wedding, it could be a nice idea to have a childrens table. Sit all the children on one table and decorate it especially for them, with games and activity books at each place setting for them to play with during the wedding breakfast. Here we have come up with some ideas for what to include on your children tables, we styled it with pink and white striped runners as well as activities, books and games all available from our children’s activities collection online at www. theweddingofmydreams.co.uk All images courtesy of Daffodil Waves Photography Styling + Childrens Activities: The Wedding of my Dreams

MY AIM IS TO MAKE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF MY CAKES AS INVITING AS POSSIBLE
H
ere, we meet Lindsey, founder of the incredible Smiggle Kitchen to talk eggs, Downtown Abbey and Taylor Swift!
Lindsey, your cakes are amazing! What is your secret to making them so big and WOW!? My aim is to make each and every one of my cakes as inviting as possible. I want the guests at a wedding to leave with a great big slab of deliciousness, not your average inch square piece of dried up cake. I use 98 eggs to create some of my bigger cakes and have a real passion for what I do which I feel shows in my cake creations! How would you describe your cakes? One of my brides recently said ‘There’s a naked cake and then there’s your naked cake’. That pretty much sums my cakes up really. I’ve taken the naked cake concept but rather than being stripped back and bare, it’s a spectacle. My cakes are around 18” wide and between 1.5ft and 2ft tall. I use all local produce and focus heavily on flavours – there’s no point in the cake looking amazing if it doesn’t taste amazing too so I take a lot of time perfecting the taste. I like to think my cakes wouldn’t look out of place on the table at Downtown Abbey! What do you feel makes your cakes stand out against other wedding cakes? I’ve not seen anyone do what I do. I would have to say the size of my cakes makes me stand out, the amount of ingredients and
W W W.
fruits that I use plus I like to use flowers from the brides bouquet to give the cake that extra special touch. What made you decide to start making cakes for a living? Following a terrible family tragedy, I see cakes as a way of coping and having something lovely and wonderful to focus my energy into. I am the eldest of 37 cousins so I feel like I’ve spent my entire life either baking or cooking for people so it’s just something I love to do! How far in advance should people book you for their wedding? It varies really. I have taken bookings for the end of next year but then I also have brides book me who get married the following month. I try to be as flexible as possible. Who would be your dream wedding to provide a Smiggle cake for? Well, I would love to see Taylor Swift finally settle down and how amazing would it be for me to design a cake creation for Taylor and her new flame, Tom Hiddleston! Wedding Showcase Day On Sunday 17th April 2016, we opened our doors to prospective wedding couples to be the first to look around our beautiful venue. After we set up our rooms, our recommended suppliers Dyl&Co and Riverbank Floristry came and dressed each room for a wedding to showcase the venue in its natural beauty. On the day itself, The Frangipani Tree & Kayleigh Read Hairstylist used models for hair and makeup tutorials to give tips to our brides, and we had delicious cupcakes courtesy of Amy at The Sugarpod Cakery. As we showed our wedding couples around the venue with their glass of bubbly, we had a harp and flute duo perform at the grand staircase to set the scene.

laire and Paul recently enjoyed an amazing tipi wedding with catering supplied by the talented team at Thomas the Caterer. Here we talk to Claire all about her big day and her experience with this fabulous company; Congratulations Claire, how would you describe your big day? Our big day was the best day ever! :) To be surrounded by all the people we care about and experiencing the love and laughter from all our guests truly was an incredible feeling. We wanted our wedding to be relaxed and informal with everyone at ease, so Bridge House Barn, the Tipi and the style of our wedding menu all contributed to this atmosphere. We were also lucky enough to have a glorious day of sunshine from start to finish, which for an outdoor style wedding was just the icing on the cake. All our guests were absolutely blown away with the whole setting in the beautiful English countryside so we couldn’t have asked for anything more! What was the highlight of your wedding? We have to say our ceremony at St Wilfrids Church in Kibworth was such a special moment during the day. Our Vicar was wonderful and quirky and after getting to know him through a marriage preparation course we attended, the ceremony was so personal. When announcing us as husband and wife, the Vicar bound our hands together in fabric which we hadn’t seen before and really was a ‘butterfly moment’ for us both. Talk us through your catering … After travelling to various countries as a couple, we wanted to incorporate some of the flavours we’d experienced on our travels into our wedding menu. Thomas was definitely the man for the job as he
W W W.
had a very different approach to other caterers we’d been in touch with and really delved into what we both liked and wanted to achieve in a menu that was personal to us. Our Canapés really reflected our travels and tastes, including; Asian, South American, as well as home British flavours. We were a little unsure about what to have as the starter, simply because the Canapés we’d decided on with Thomas were so great! But we tasted Thomas’s arancini and straight away that was our starter decided. For the main course, we said to Thomas that we would really like to go with sharing platters to make it less formal, and again Thomas came up with some absolutely delicious dishes...the most amazing shin of beef which some of our guests are still talking about now, herb crusted turkey, salmon and an array of salads and vegetable sides which were so creative and full of flavour. For pud, we decided to have our wedding cake double up as a dessert purely because we hadn’t had a single piece of cake at previous weddings we’d been to. A personal favourite cake of ours is Nigella’s chocolate Guinness cake and this being my signature bake for family and friends, we thought it only right to have it as our wedding cake. Paul does love a good pint of Guinness too as do many of our Irish friends. Thomas offered to make this for us too, so we snapped his hand off. We are both also great cheese lovers, as are a number of our family and friends. So to accompany a hog roast in the evening, Thomas provided us with a cheese platter along with biscuits, breads, fruit and chutneys which all went down a treat - it was also conveniently positioned next to the dance floor too so very wellreceived by all the party goers!

How would you sum up your experience with the team at Thomas the Caterer? From start to finish the whole experience has been so smooth and easy! Thomas and Lynsey have answered all our questions throughout the planning stages so promptly and have offered tips and guidance when needed. The team setting up and serving on the day were absolutely brilliant and so attentive towards our guests. We really do feel like we have been offered a very personal service throughout and have loved all the extra touches which Thomas offers - a congratulatory card at the start of January for our 2016 wedding, email updates, a lovely card at our wedding, as well as a thank you gift of homemade jam through the post after we returned from our honeymoon. It really has been a completely second to none service and we’re so pleased to have had Thomas and his team help make our day so special. What would you say to any bride or groom considering booking Thomas the Caterer for their wedding? Definitely book Thomas the Caterer!! Thomas and his team are an incredible bunch of people who are clearly passionate about what they do. Their food creations are so delicious and really will be the talking point of your wedding. You couldn’t ask for more to have top notch food, as well as excellent, personalised customer service. They are awesome! e love it when we stumble across a gorgeous photo shoot. Even more so when it takes place at one of our favourite wedding venues. The West Mill is a rustic blank canvas and we think you’ll agree, the perfect backdrop for this stunning bohemian shoot. Here, photographer Gemma of The Wardette Studio tells us all about it;
something young and fresh. I wanted it to be classic and accessible to most brides, but with a dash of something a little alternative and unique. We needn’t make a wedding a pinterest replica; let’s take some risks with our inspiration shoots, and offer up ideas which best reflect the versatility of our work and creativity!”
“The boho look is such a popular bridal style, and something of a goto for the more laid back bride. It is no coincidence that it matches my own approach. I built this look around my own ‘Rock n Rose’ ankle cuffs.. the sound of which are magical when you walk; heavy and metallic and musical. This barefoot bride, was where the inspiration began. Set at the stunning The Westmill Venue, Derby, our team of suppliers set about creating a boho look inside an industrial venue. It doesn’t sound like your typical match, but it really worked. I wanted this to be a little alternative and edgy, like the setting, so our skateboarder groom brought his skateboard! The styling was decadent yet rustic, with mountains of white flowers, and beautiful calligraphy work; everything from the glassware to the table settings were all suitably vintage and chic. The Westmill’s ceremony room is a textural industrial backdrop, which was softened by an abundance of unique floral designs and ideas. A sweet little wood, found in The Westmill’s grounds, was dressed as an alternative ceremony space; it was almost festival in feel, with multicoloured ribbons fluttering about in the natural space. And who can resist a little woodland for couple photos? It’s always helpful if you can leave the wedding party for a few more intimate photos on the day. ‘Barefoot Bohemian’ is hoped to work alternative bohemian wedding inspiration; something to think about besides the barn or farm wedding. As art director and photographer, I wanted to shoot W W W.

an Bursill shares a little more information with us about how being invisible on the wedding day doesn’t mean wearing all black and skulking around in the corner of the room not talking to anyone. “There’s been a lot written about the subject of being ‘unobtrusive’ when photographing weddings, both by myself and many other photographers who consider themselves to be ‘documentary wedding photographers’ or ‘wedding photojournalists’. However, a lot of these photographers miss the point. It’s not about going unnoticed, lurking in the shadows, skulking around and trying to snatch pictures without being seen, or using telephoto lenses to pick off people from a distance. It’s about blending in, becoming a part of the day and building up a rapport with your subjects. This allows you to get close and get more intimate, dynamic and interesting photographs. These three pictures are a great illustration of that. There are brides, bridesmaids, mums & wedding vendors in these pics and I’m there with them all with quite big, obvious, professional cameras. But there is no sign of my influence in this picture - everyone is acting naturally
W W W.
and getting on with their own thing. I can’t just turn up and shoot pictures like this straight away. With all of these images, I’d already been there for at least two hours or more, chatting with the bride and bridesmaids, passing the time of day with mum, talking with the vendors, and taking pictures and letting everyone get used to me being there. So when it came time for me to record each of these three moments it wasn’t awkward or weird, it was just natural that there were pictures to be taken and that I was there to take them. Obviously if there had been any indication from any of them that they didn’t want me there, then I would have left. But it was just accepted that I was in there doing what I was being paid to do - document each of these wedding days and provide the best & most emotive pictures possible. Knowing when to shoot and when to hold off is a vital skill that only comes with experience. You have to be able to read the situation and act appropriately. And that’s not something you can learn from a book or a workshop or an internet video. It’s something that comes gradually - the more you shoot, the better you get. www.bursill.com
