Q&A

Honeysuckle and Castle

We at Save the Date magazine have enjoyed working with sisters Helen and Sally at Honeysuckle and Castle since we began and have watched their lovely business flourish. Here, we catch up with the girls: So girls, what’s new? Goodness, where do we begin?! 2012 and 2013 have been two amazing but crazy years for us. One of us had a baby!! The beautiful Louie joined the Honeysuckle & Castle family in early May (2012). That same week we were incredibly lucky to announce our partnership with the National Trust and introduce the gorgeous Calke Abbey into the world of weddings. And then, finally in the last few weeks, we have updated, refurbished and expanded our showroom.

Tell our readers a little bit about what to expect from the refurbishment and expansion of the H&C showroom…. We moved into our current premises over two years ago now however, it has only been recently that we have expanded our showroom over two floors. With a wider range of venue decorations, floral displays and wedding stationery etc etc, the ‘ground floor’ is used as our showroom. We have a quiet consultation area all within touching distance of a full table mock up. This is a lovely touch to our showroom as it allows our clients to see, touch and even smell their décor before the big day. We both have such a passion of all things weddings, this expansion has allowed us to create this Aladdin’s cave of wedding décor and unique styling with that extra touch of gorgeousness!

of how they want their wedding to look, it keeps us on our toes (smiley faces)

From a venue styling perspective, what new, exciting and popular trends do you think are in for 2013/14?

What can couples expect from you on their wedding day?

We feel that 2013/14 is all about ‘complement and coordinate’ …a beautiful wedding need not match! Vintage is still very much in and will continue to do so for a few more years yet as there are so many different elements to it. We have noticed that this year’s vintage is ‘simple rustic’. Theming is being stripped back and with more of a soft and minimalistic approach that oozes with ultra-feminine.

In the run up to their wedding day, couples can expect us to save them time, energy, effort and money as well as offering personalised, creative and unique ideas. We can offer help and advice on any pre-nuptial problems and ensure perfect theming. On the big day itself, nothing is left to chance. Their day will be stress free and love filled. With thanks to Oehlers Photography.

This year we have found that the majority of our weddings have differed away from the tight, architectural floral arrangements and are choosing the ‘home grown garden’ look that have a good mixture of colours and textures. What particular styles/trends do you personally like at the moment? Trends are forever changing and there’s lots to consider when a couple pick theirs e.g the interior décor of chosen venue, the dress etc however I (Helen) personally love the ‘eat me shades’ with a very natural and romantic look and collection of pastel colours. On the other hand I (Sally) love a more vibrant colour palette with a real fresh and vivacious feel. We love how every wedding, which we are involved in, are so different from one another. Every couple have their own image

y winning the Save the Date competition, it really helped with my planning - I couldn't wait to share the good news with my husband to be- Matt. My next step was to contact save the date, who confirmed I was the winner. I squealed with excitement but still couldn't take it all in!

hen we at Save the Date magazine run a competition, we do it in style. And use the absolute best suppliers in the industry. So, here we have Lucy Halstead who was the lucky winner of the most amazing Save the Date competition...

W

e also had a large tag of the same style to hang from a large birdcage and used this for guests to post cards. Michele visited several times to discuss designs and her service was absolutely fabulous.

"I

t was a relief to know that the suppliers of the prizes were all people I had met at the Wedding Event with a Difference and had on my wish list to consider for our special day on May 4th 2013. It was the most amazing feeling, our day would be magical.

Theming by the creative Michele Gledhill www.michelegledhill.co.uk The Cake by the fabulous Yummy Little Cakes: www.yummylittlecakes.co.uk

I

ncluded in the competition, I could have a beautiful 3 tier cake to the design of my choice from Natalie at Yummy little cakes which was beautifully displayed on a high table throughout the wedding breakfast. Natalie came up with some designs and colours; we chose a simple design with scalloped icing that looked like lace with a simple pink peony.

H

aving professional help and ideas with my table plan and name cards from the amazing stylist, Michele Gledhill, lead to me ordering all my wedding stationary (invitations for day and evening reception) and bunting for my vintage sweetie table which saved me time sourcing alternative suppliers. We chose a trunk for the table plan with lace strung across with the table names hanging, very pretty, simple ivory luggage tag style trimmed with lace. All table name cards and table names were of the same style (tag, lace, ivory.) The name cards looked very pretty tied with ribbon to a little white bird cage with tea light candles for the ladies and for the gents a miniature whiskey.

Entertainment by the amazing Just Ben www.justben.co.uk

T

he competition meant we could have live back ground music for when guests arrived and throughout the ceremony, drinks and canapés whilst photos were being taken. Our many guests commented on how entertaining Ben was and enjoyed his choice of music. Our day wouldn't have been the same without Ben!

Beautiful flowers by the Greenery www.thegreenery.uk.com

I

had already chosen to use the Greenery to supply flowers for our wedding day so when I won the competition prize of bridal bouquet, groom button hole and bridesmaid flowers I was over the moon! The Greenery played a big part in our day, and when I finally saw my flowers it was overwhelming - they were so colourful. My bouquet and arrangements were to look as though they had been freshly picked from the garden. The colours really lifted everything with the colour theme all being so neutral.

When I received the email telling me I had won a competition with prizes towards our wedding day I couldn't believe what I was reading. I’ve never won anything in my life so you can imagine how delighted I was!

B

aroque Couture provided me with a thousand pound prize towards the wedding dress of my dreams. The whole dress experience was amazing. Elaina did a sketch of my dress, I knew immediately this was the design for me.

D

uring the months that followed, the dress was made to measure, very fitted with lace and pearls, scalloped hem and neck line with a low back. The finishing touch to the top of the zip was an Art Deco style crystal brooch. Every visit to Elaina at Baroque Couture was an experience I will always remember, nothing was too much trouble.

E

laina had done the most fabulous job in making my dress and the time and effort she took in putting it together and making it so perfect for me, I felt like a princess.”

Are you torn between two styles for your wedding?

Perhaps you like the idea of a laid back rustic look but are worried it won’t be glamorous enough for your wedding day. Well who says you can’t mix them both together to create rustic glamour.

Here is Gemma Morgan from the Wedding of my Dreams to show you how:

27

Start with the venue If you ve chosen a rustic styled venue, say a converted barn or farm then you ll need to glam it up with your décor. Alternatively if you have chosen a glamorous manor house or marquee, you can still create this look, you ll just need to tone it down with the décor you choose. Photography by: Br aedon Photography Photography by: Belmaged Photgraphy

Save The Date | Issue Nineteen

28

Styling the tables It is up to you whether you choose long or round tables for your guests to sit at, this will depend on the size and shape of your reception venue. Adding hessian table runners over the plain linen will instantly change the look of the tables giving them a rustic feel. For a more rustic style keep to rustic centrepieces such as birch bark containers filled with natural flowers, bottles with single stems, jam jars covered in hessian or lace, add the glamour by using mercury silver candle sticks, tea light holders and lanterns. Alternatively keep the centrepieces glamorous, use crystal glass vases, decanters, mercury silver bottles or even candelabra on the tables which will be toned down by the hessian table cloths and rustic barn setting. Pay attention to small details, napkins can be folded flat and tied with hessian and gold ribbon. Chair backs could be kept simple with ribbon hanging from the chair backs, or even a luggage tag on each chair with the guests name on.

Photography by: BeImaged Photography

Which colours work well? A metallic mix of gold, silver and bronze with highlights of clear glass as well as neutral tones of ivory soft pink and mint green.

Wow factor

Photography by: Mark Brooke Photography

Candle light You can never have enough candle light at a wedding, add the romantic glimmer of candle light to your tables, in the form of tea light holders, candle sticks or lanterns. Lanterns and candles look great running along window sills and mantle pieces.

Add that wow factor with large chandeliers. These look amazing hanging from wooden beams within a barn and will dramatically transform your venue.

At www.theweddingofmydreams.co.uk we have a whole range of rustic glamour decorations, pop over and have a look if you are searching for inspiration.

A & Q

Rachel Helen Designs

Talented jewellery maker, Rachel, talks to Save the Date Magazine about her creative talent and thriving business; Rachel, how did your business begin and what inspired you? I first began making jewellery as a child. Following university, I took on a full time office job and decided to enrol in evening classes for silver smithing & jewellery. I have now been in business for 8 years - I started out building up slowly, working part time from home and finding my feet before moving into Shed 2 Studios four & a half years ago. My bespoke commissions have sold nationally and internationally. Describe your jewellery and style I would describe my style as vintage inspired with a modern twist. I'm inspired by nature and the things that surround me. My customers and their style also influence the designs I put together and I can create any piece from simple and subtle to intricate and fancy.

I love to make jewelley with meaning and a story to tell, particularly sentimental pieces. I have recently made several wedding rings using metal from reformed sentimental family jewellery. What do you offer to brides to be when planning their wedding? I offer honest advice and a unique design service. Choosing the right rings for your wedding can be a daunting task. As a symbol of marriage they are designed to be worn everyday for a lifetime so have to be right. I work closely with both bride and groom to help create the perfect rings for their style and budget whether that be a one off design or an off the shelf ring. Customers can visit me at my workshop in Ilkeston (by appointment only) or I am happy to discuss commissions via email and telephone. It's always a good idea for the bride and groom to have a rough idea of what it is they are looking for before visiting, but I am always more than happy to offer help and advice where needed.

Getting to know

Ian Bursill

Save The Date | Issue Nineteen

35

Leicestershire based wedding photojournalist Ian Bursill was the winner of the UK Wedding Industry Awards “Best Photographer” for the East Midlands region in 2012. He was also listed in the top three of the WPJA's “International Photographer of the Year” competition in 2009. Ian profiles the kind of couples that hire his services for their wedding day. “My couples are fun-loving, laid-back and friends and family are extremely important to them. They like great service, quality products and want their whole wedding experience to be totally stress-free. They appreciate good photography – it's high on their list of priorities and it's something they won't compromise on. They're not overly keen on having their photos taken and don't want to be posing for photos for hours while they could be celebrating with their guests, so they want a photographer who will just get on and work quietly in the background, observing and documenting real and emotive moments. My couples want images that show how they stumbled and giggled during their vows, how much in love with each other they are and how their friends and family laughed uncontrollably during the best man's speech. They want to see real photographs of real moments with real people. They don't want images of people with cut-off heads, contrived moments and endless details, because those really aren't the kind of shots that will evoke the memories of their day in the future. In years to come, they'll want to be able to look back at their photographs and relive those real and emotive moments. To my couples, it seems that a lot of photographers think that the most important things to photograph at a wedding are the decor, the details and the style. I think differently, I think a lot deeper than that... I think the most important things to photograph at a wedding are the people.” Save The Date | Issue Nineteen

Welcome to the incredible wedding of Caroline & Gareth We decided to get married at our local church and have our wedding reception at home. We live on a dairy farm in Caunton, near Newark and we transformed one of the cow sheds just across the yard from our home into our dream wedding venue! Save The Date | Issue Nineteen

41

H

aving our reception on the farm meant that we could choose exactly what we wanted the venue to look like, what we wanted to eat, and add all the little touches and details that we’d been dreaming up. It also allowed us to create a day that was 100% unique to us, and we loved that about it!

W

e didn’t want our wedding day to have any of the traditional, formal, wedding day feel to it so the style was most definitely a handmade, relaxed, informal country wedding and just a jolly good knees up really!

W

e loved the idea of a vintage inspired, country village fete feel to the day, and that fitted in really well with the informal and relaxed environment we wanted. Someone described our wedding as a bit of a community project which we thought was brilliant (and so true) – so many of our friends and family were involved in one way or another, from making the bunting and the cushions, to fluffing nearly 100 pom poms, baking cakes, making

chutneys, flower arranging, collecting jam jars and tying raffia around the necks of 130 of them for our welcome drinks – the list goes on and on! We borrowed straw bales from a local farm for seating, and over the year I collected lots of old crocheted and knitted blankets and gorgeous old floral curtains to cover them with.

W

e had over 450 metres of bunting, and 400 metres of fairy lights which were the main decorations for the barn, together with nearly 100 pom poms, and a crepe paper back drop which I think my bridesmaids never wanted to see again after spending hours and hours constructing the day before the wedding – it looked absolutely amazing though so thank you girls! We made the table names from vintage cow postcards, all tables names based on breeds of cows and staked them in potted up cowslips. For the table favours I made all the ladies a recipe book including some of my favourite baking recipes that I have collected along my travels (the men had mini pork pies

which were sourced locally). We used little luggage labels for place names and to label all the food and stamped them with a tiny cow stamp that I bought from Etsy. We made lace edged hessian table runners for all the trestle tables and cushions and blankets for the bales made from vintage table cloths. When we first got engaged I was determined that I wasn’t going to spend a fortune on a dress that I would only wear once – I was a bit scared of going to a posh dress shop and falling in love with a £5000 wedding dress that I could never afford, so I just hot footed it to monsoon, found a lovely wedding dress that was actually in the sale and that was it, job done. Or so I thought.

A

s spring came and the wedding drew a bit nearer, I started wondering if I had made the right decision. Because everything about our wedding was handmade and we had a bit of an eco theme running through it, I began to think that having an

‘off the rails’ wedding dress wasn’t quite right for me. Therefore one night I was on my computer drooling over some amazing Jenny Packham dresses, that I knew I could never afford, and I somehow stumbled across an ebay listing for a ‘Jenny Packham Aspen’ style wedding dress. I LOVED it as soon as I saw it, and though I know it was a bit of a big gamble, I just went with my gut and bought it. Absolutely the best decision I have ever made (apart from marrying Gareth of course!) I also found the most stunning hair comb at the Save the Date Wedding Event with a Difference in April, it was made by Bennett and Bates, and was just so pretty!

I

strongly feel that small independent businesses need support and we’re so lucky where we live to be surrounded by some amazing local businesses. It was heaps of fun to source all the food for our picnic lunch from local producers – and we had lots of tasting sessions for everything!

I

nstead of a formal sit down meal we decided to have a picnic lunch. All the milk for our farm goes to a local dairy to make Stilton cheese, so we knew the food had to have a bit of a ‘cheese’ theme, so we collected picnic baskets and filled them with local goodies. We even had a local ice cream parlour ‘Newfield Dairy’ outside the church with their Ice Cream van serving us champagne and strawberry ice cream after the ceremony!

W

e enlisted the help of the lovely and brilliant Karen and her Darby and Joan team, having met her at a ‘Save the Date’ wedding event in Derby - both to provide us with all the pretty vintage china and to help everything run smoothly on the day – we really couldn’t have done it without her! She kept me calm and worked like an absolute Trojan from the crack of dawn on the Friday and the wedding day itself, hanging pom poms,

dressing tables, arranging the flowers and just generally making everything look beautiful.

C

atkin flowers, a local florist in Lincolnshire with an amazing cutting garden, put together our bouquets. All the flowers for the tables and jam jars came from Flower Pod, and we supplemented them with some greenery and lots of dried flowers for a friend who has a small wildflower meadow in the next village along from us.

O

ur stationery is one of the most special parts of our wedding. Designed for us by a friend of mine with a small sewing business, ‘Upsticks Boutique’, Sally created a unique embroidery for each part of our stationery. Sally is just setting up her business and is offering 10% discount for new wedding stationery orders at the moment too.

46

T

he best bit about it is having the original embroidery to frame and keep. An amazing memento of our wedding, we now have a ‘wedding wall’ in our dining room filled with Sally’s special work. Some friends of ours bought a beautiful apple green VW camper van ‘Alfie’ last year, and our wedding was his first outing as a proper wedding car – he was amazing! Decorated with flowers and with a vintage suitcase on his roof rack, he fitted in perfectly.

O

ur photographers were Rebecca and Stacey from Milestones photography. I LOVE their style, and they just seem to capture moments and emotions perfectly, so I knew straight away that I wanted Rebecca to be in charge of our wedding photography. We also had a videographer which was a totally last minute decision,

and I am so glad we did. James from Digi-scope was brilliant, I hardly even knew he was there, and it’s so lovely to have everything caught on film.

W

e had so much fun planning our wedding day, and the only way I can describe the day itself is absolutely the best day ever! By making it so unique to us and including so many of our family and friends we have a mountain full of special memories that we will treasure forever. You’ll always have the best day ever, surrounded by all the people you love the most and at the end of it all you’ll be Mr and Mrs, and at the beginning of an amazing adventure through life together - and that’s really what it’s all about".

Lets take it outdoors!

Love a good festival? Enjoy the fresh outdoors and really fancy saying ‘I do’ in a unique and original way? Then look no further than Tinkers Bells; beautifully furnished bell tents for unique weddings and accommodation. Save The Date | Issue Nineteen

Here, owner Ali gives us a little background on Tinkers Bells..

“I

n early 2009, like so many prospective Brides and Grooms around the country, we began to make plans for our May 2010 wedding but immediately had the stumbling block of how we could make our wedding unique to us on a small budget. Ideally, we didn’t want a village hall or a traditional wedding venue for the reception, we wanted to find something that suited our personalities and wanted everyone to be relaxed and not constrained by the surroundings of four walls. So, after lengthy research and planning we opted to bring the day outdoors with a festival tinged celebration with Canvas Tipis and Bell Tents as the backdrop.

T

he gorgeous wedding tent for your first night as husband and wife is furnished with the obligatory bunting, luxurious rugs and more and if that’s not enough and you think you might need some extra secret space for guests to kick back and relax in, why not consider a Chill Out Tent! Tinkers Bells have teamed up with the fabulous Peak Tipis to be able to offer you the complete Festival package with mismatched tents, tipis and a whole host of extras to complete the look.

T

he Bell Tents can also be hired out for your Glamping & Hen weekends!". So, if you fancy taking it outdoors and want your wedding to be the most talked about nuptials since Wills and Kate, look no further than Tinkers Bells:

T

ogether with eclectic musical sounds, the ‘back to nature’ festival atmosphere meant there were no heirs and graces on the big day....just great fun! It was from this that more than just a marriage was born, the dawn of our business emerged - Tinkers Bells. As a husband and wife team, with a background of fashion buying and design we decided to ditch our jobs in Manchester and move back to Staffordshire, where we both grew up, a scary decision but one we are so glad we have taken!

W S

e are now very excited to see our business grow and be a part of the most special day of people’s lives!

o, if you’re considering a Festival Style Guest Village, why not opt for the unique bell tents and allow your guests to soak up the relaxed atmosphere of your wedding pitched at a location of your choice. The luxury canvas tents are simply furnished and perfect as a backdrop to make your photographs look even more amazing.

T

his is what one of our brides Fiona, had to say about her experience at Mimi Toko; "When we got engaged, I have to admit I didn't even know where to start to look for dresses so I asked friends and family for recommendations. Mimi Toko was recommended to me by my cousin and I happened to like her dress so thought it was a good place to start! On our first visit, my bridesmaid and I were greeted by the lovely Alaine and I began choosing dresses to try on it eventually turned out that all

of my favourites were Ian Stuart dresses. I actually tried on THE dress on my first visit. I visited a few other boutiques and went to another Ian Stuart designer weekend, trying on the original dress in a different colour- this was when I realised it was the one! However, I knew Mimi Toko had an Ian Stuart weekend coming up and I wanted to buy my dress from them as I had been so impressed with their friendly service. So, I returned that weekend and bought my dress there and then.

W

hen the dress arrived, I was quite nervous as I had changed the neckline and ordered it in a colour I had only seen once but I loved it! It was also a perfect fit! A week or so before the wedding was my final visit I had my hair and make-up done and brought all my accessories in to try on. Again, Alaine was brilliant helping with my hair, veil and shoe decision! I was actually quite sad to leave the shop on my final visit as I had enjoyed the whole experience so much."

Having been on the wedding scene for over 15 years, Marcus knows a thing or two about what it takes to create long lasting memories for his brides and grooms with beautiful wedding photography. With great relationships in place with a range of venues across the East Midlands including the highly regarded Langar Hall, Marcus shoots both locally and internationally having just returned from shooting a wedding on the glamorous Amalfi Coast. Mixing classic, posed shots with natural, reportage style photography, Marcus’ flair and style has given him a well earned reputation for fantastic wedding photography within the industry. Here is a recent wedding album which he shot in September 2012 at Langar Hall. Marcus says,

The couple were so relaxed and easy to

work with. I love how natural the pictures are and how the couple’s beautiful day is so apparent by just looking at a few of the pictures. The details of the wedding, the incredible dress and the glorious weather all combined to make a fantastic day which I’m proud to have been a part of”. By Marcus Holdsworth

Introducing STUART WOOD

I

f you’re in search of classic, romantic photos to cherish forever then look no further than award winning Stuart Wood.

W

ith experience of shooting commissions for national magazines for 20 years, Stuart has worked for the likes of Grazia, Cosmopolitan and Radio Times and therefore boasts an exceptional portfolio of impressive work.

H

is artistic and creative flair means that when Stuart is capturing your wedding day, no two weddings are the same and he goes above and beyond to create the WOW factor. His experience combined with his infectious enthusiasm and passion for weddings ensures that he delivers incredible results, every time.

S

tuart says “I noticed the way that wedding photography had moved on, especially overseas with fabulous photographers like Jerry Ghionis and Yervant and recognised a gap in a very overcrowded wedding photography market in the UK, where I believe the standards are often very low and also where some individuals make unrealistic claims about their abilities, despite having absolutely no experience at a level anywhere near high enough to justify them.

H

aving years of experience as a people photographer shooting to the standards needed for some of the biggest magazines and TV shows in the country, that I still regularly shoot for, I recognised that working quickly under pressure and connecting well with my subjects made me ideally suited for photographing weddings.

Save The Date | Issue Nineteen

71

I

always avoid taking my couples away from their weddings for long periods of time and much prefer to have small time slots of a few minutes only. Because I'm experienced at working like this, we are then free to concentrate on moving the photography on and capturing the real emotions of the day in a way that people looking at the picture later, often never realise that the situation is actually set up, as it looks so natural.

B

eing also known for my speciality lighting, which has led to being sponsored by brand leaders Elinchrom and of course, documenting the day from bride and groom getting ready up until first dance, I truly feel that I can now offer a service to my couples that is of a standard that is increasingly uncommon.”

W

ith three years worth of national awards under his belt, recommended by the likes of the Four Seasons Hotel and running ‘sell out’ photography courses, Stuart Wood is a name to remember.
