없어 보이는 요소들을 연결해 새롭고 유익한 결합을 이루어내는 능력을

해변의 연인들
처음 철사를 이용한 작품들을 시작했을 때는 물체들에 눈, 코, 입 않을수록 캐릭터의 감정을 더 감동적으로 전달할 수 있다는 것 을 깨달았습니다. 이제는 캐릭터가 느끼는 감정을 캐릭터의 포
두 개의 과자가 포옹하는 순간을 담은 이 작품은 고대 그리스의
두 개의 털실뭉치에서 풀려 나오는 털실 한 올 한 올을 엮어 사랑
운 것처럼 보였어요. 감자 칩 색의 차이를 대비시키려고 연인들
�사랑이란 인간과 인간을 결합하여 본래의 모습으로 돌아가게
한 결합을 상징합니다. 그 어떤 고난과 역경에서도 사랑의 매듭
이 여름 날 해변에서 피서를 즐기는 모습으로 연출했어요. 모래
즈와 주변 배경을 통해서 표현하려고 합니다. 너무 설명적이고
사장은 놀이용 모래를 사서 만들었고 감자 칩에 철사를 붙일 때 는 에폭시를 조금 사용했습니다.
구체적이면 상상력이 발휘되지 않거든요. 그래서 미래학자인 스
텐 데이비(Stan Davis) 도 �상상력의 힘이야말로 예술세계에서
사랑의 매듭
현대인의 인기 간식거리인 감자칩의 색깔을 비교해보았어요. 바
비큐 맛이 나는 포테이토칩은 마치 선텐을 심하게 해서 살을 태
등을 표현했어요. 작품을 계속하면서 얼굴을 자세히 표현하지
백마디 말보다 한 번의 포옹
의 매듭을 짓습니다. 털실은 포근하게 감싸는 사랑, 매듭은 영원
철학자 플라톤의 저서 <향연>에 나오는 구절을 떠올리게 해요.
은 결코 풀리지 않을 겁니다.
하는 것, 두 사람을 한 몸으로 만들어 최초의 몸을 되찾으려는 갈 망입니다.�

Made for Each Other
Remember to Wear Sunscreen I�m comparing the color of potato chips (a popular snack in the U.S.). The ones with the Barbecue flavoring look like they�ve gotten too much sun. I bought some play sand for the beach, and used some epoxy to attache the wires to the chips.
Peanut Butter and Jelly is an iconic sandwich for Americans, and to say two things go together like peanut butter and jelly is to say those two things were made for each other. Sometimes two people are said to be made for each other because they get along so well. So here is a representation of that. I had a person request a print of this photo so he could have it with him when he proposed marriage to his girlfriend. (She said yes.) My most popular children�s book (the one has been translated into Korean), �Peanut Butter & Cupcake!� was based on a slice of peanut butter bread looking for a friend and finally finding jelly. This year, the book was adapted into a stage musical. So, you can tell people really enjoy peanut butter and jelly!

Spoolish Love
Once again, one object needs another to be <complete>. I always saw the creamy filling as a mortar that holds the two sides of the cookie together, so the filling stands for love in this scene. Without it, the two cookies can�t stay connected.
When I happened upon the two old spools of thread in my late grandmother�s sewing kit, they were already quite old, and had spent many years together in an old box. �Tying the know� is a saying for getting married. �Spoolish Love� rhymes with �Foolish Love� in English, and I think all love can seem foolish at one time or another.

�샘과 엘라� 라는 이름의 부부 새는 닭다리 두 개로 만들었어요.
사비나미술관에서 한국산 곶감을 미국에 있는 제게 소포로 보내
두 새의 이름은 식중독의 원인이 되는 살모넬라균과 비슷한 발
왔어요. 한국에서 최초로 열리는 저의 개인전을 기념하는 의미
있어요. 토스트가 스스로 토스트라고 외치는 모습이 너무 재미
로 들리겠지만 깊은 뜻이 숨겨져 있어요. 살모넬라균의 주요 감
라고 보내온 거죠. 생감을 익기 전에 따서 껍질을 벗겨 건조시킨
품으로 만들려고 하다니�라고 여길 정도로 우스꽝스런 말장난
품의 메시지는 �사랑은 병을 치유한다.�입니다.
앉아있는 곶감 새 한 쌍이 태어난 거죠.
느끼는지 충분히 알 수 있습니다.
기 안에서 구워지고 있는 빵들이 와인 잔을 들고 건배를 외치고
음이 나는 단어들을 의도적으로 골라지었어요. 일종의 말장난으
있지 않나요? 이 작품은 사람들이 �설마 이런 썰렁한 유머를 작
로 명절이나 제사 때 쓰는 과일인 곶감을 작품의 소재로 사용하
염원이 병든 닭인데 닭의 부정적인 면을 없애고 싶었어요. 이 작
중 하나입니다.

When I receive the package of these persimmons from Savina Museum, they reminded me of ugly birds because of their stems. What if they were able to escape their packaging and make it back to where they had spent all of their lives? I�m sure that�s where they would go, because that is the only place they have ever known.
chicken legs. The names of these two birds were deliberately picked for words that sound like the illness Salmonella, which causes food poisoning. It sounds like a pun, but there�s more to it. The major source of the Salmonella is the sick chicken and I wanted to get rid of such negative aspect of the chicken. The message of this piece is �Love heals sickness.�

두 대의 바이올린을 위한 협주곡
일상의 사물들을 대략 10번 정도 관찰합니다. 그러다가 어느 날
바나나가 밤에 침대에 들어갈 때를 상상해보았어요. 만약 바나나
가끔 서양 배 모양의 몸매를 가진 여자를 발견하게 됩니다. 저는
협주곡(協奏曲)을 뜻하는 �콘체르토(concerto)�의 어원은 �합
�왜 내가 진작에 이런 생각을 못했지?�하고 반문하게 돼요.

Some women are called �pear shaped�, so I turned another pear over to be it�s partner and become �man shaped,� complete with stem as a penis. As a bonus, in English �pair� standing for two of something, sounds the same as �pear� as in the name of this fruit.
The title is written to read like someone speaking with a French accent from an old american movie. The person is saying �We will make beautiful music together!� If violins were alive, a male violin might try to use it�s bow to �play� its lover, like they were making love.

제 작품은 우리가 잘 아는 일상 속 사물들의 숨겨진 이야기들을

저는 서서히 타 들어가는 두 개의 양초가 함께 늙어가는 커플처
반대 성향인 사람들이 서로에게 끌린다는 말이 있지만 그 말이
타깝게도 시간이 흘러가면서 둘이 지상에서 함께 할 수 있는 시
제로 들어맞는지도 의심하게 됩니다. 그러나 자석들의 경우는
을 주려고 합니다. 다이아몬드를 많이 가진 또 다른 킹 카드는
막 순간까지도 서로에게 사랑의 온기가 되어줄 겁니다.
과 S극이 서로를 강하게 끌어당기는 이 작품은 마치 두 입이 키
어느 것에 더 가치를 두는 걸까요? 퀸 카드가 사랑과 돈 중 어떤
담고 있습니다. 우리는 사물을 볼 때 그 사물이 우리에게 주는 의

Hearts over Diamonds
I feel these two burning candles represent a couple growing old together. They gather warmth from each other, but as time goes by their time on Earth grows shorter.
There is a saying about opposite kinds of people attracting each other romantically. I�m not sure if I believe that at all, and I doubt that it would work very well in a relationship, but with magnets it is scientifically accurate. To me, these horseshoe magnets remind me of mouths, which helped make this image work well.
A deck of cards has four kings and four queens. Which would a queen value more-a King wants to give her his heart, or a King with lots of diamonds. I�ve made several works starring playing cards, but I like this one best.

They Attraction to Bad Boys
If cake topping sprinkles fell in love with black pepper, I think sneezes would happen soon. This was one of my first Bent Objects pieces from 2006, when I thought the finished art was the sculpture and not the photo. It�s so early that I included eyes on the characters, which I very rarely do now. I try to show what the character is feeling by it�s pose and surroundings. Putting a face on them seems like it�s cheap to me, personally. It�s just not something I care to do.
When I was a young man, I was a pretty nice boy, but to my confusion and irritation most girls were attracted to bad boys. This was made even worse by the fact that the few girls who liked nice boys like me... I had no interest in them, so I deserved all of my unhappiness. The pretty flower is attracted to the bad and dangerous cactus. She yearns for him even though she knows she will end up getting hurt.

작품 속 초콜릿은 진짜이고, 포장지에 묻은 립스틱 자국도 그렇
저는 한 때 슈퍼마켓에 있는 빵집에서 제빵사로 일한 적이 있어
우연히 아내나 애인의 불륜현장을 목격한 감자 칩 남자의 비극
몬이 담겨있었고 그 옆 바구니에는 레몬 모양의 플라스틱 통에
로 겪었으니 남자는 얼마나 큰 충격을 받았겠어요. 외도 현장에
습니다. 그리고 저는 컴퓨터로 사진을 교정하는 작업은 거의 하

Caught Orange Handed
When I worked in the supermarket, the bakery which I worked in was very close to the fruits and vegetables. Quite often I would pass a table with baskets or real lemons and plastic lemons filled with lemon juice. I wondered what the real lemons thought of sharing their space with plastic ones. Were they offended? Then I wondered if a lonely lemon would buy a plastic lemon online, like a sex doll. The thing people find funny about this picture is that he has his door hel closed by leaning his chair against it. He needed absolute privacy!
These fried snacks are covered with an artificial, orange, cheese flavored powder which covers the eater�s fingers. My wife loves them, but I think less of their taste than the strange powder. I started thinking-if evidence remains on a person�s fingers that proves they�ve been eating the �cheese doodles� snacks, what if one of the snacks were alive, and groped their lover? Of course, evidence would be left of it�s efforts. In this photo, I see the potato ship�s father coming home and surprising the young couple.

A Horrific Yarn As to the title, a �yarn� can mean a long story in English, so the yarn looks horrific as a visual, and in the was of a story. The way most people store their needles after knitting is to poke them in the yarn like this, and it seems violent to me. In the U.S., knitting has become a hobby of many young �hip� people, and they like that this image has a dark feeling to it.

이 작품은 르네상스 시대 천재조각가인 미켈란젤로에게 바치는
로 남자가 초콜릿 여자의 달콤한 유혹을 거부할 수 있을지, 미인
영감을 얻곤 합니다. 저는 두 차례 로마로 여행을 간 적이 있었는
계략인 미인계(美人計)에 걸려드는 사람들이 있습니다. 마시멜
헌사입니다. 저와 아내는 예술을 매우 사랑하고 여러 명작에서
계의 희생물이 될지 궁금해집니다.
데 공교롭게도 두 번 모두 미켈란젤로의 <천지창조>의 소장처
저는 몇 년간 야채들로 영국의 헨리 8세 시대를 배경으로 한 단

페르세우스 감자
에드워드 웨스턴(Edward Weston) 사진집에 실린 겁니다. 저는 그 사진집을 도서관에서 빌려왔어요. 제겐 웨스턴이 찍은 한 개
이죠. 영화를 만들지는 않았지만 이 작품은 그런 영감을 바탕으로
의 녹색 파프리카 사진이 매우 에로틱하게 보였어요. 마치 두개
의 파프리카가 열정적으로 끌어안고 있는 것처럼 느껴졌거든요.
한 괴물 메두사의 목을 잘랐어요. 페르세우스는 잘린 메두사의 머
웨스턴이 야채인 파프리카로 에로티시즘을 표현한 점이 제게는 마술처럼 경이로웠습니다. 그는 �나는 비범한 대상을 찾아다니
이탄(Clash of the Titans)�에서 주인공 페르세우스는 메두사의
지 않고 평범한 것을 비범하게 만든다.�라는 유명한 말을 남겼어 요. 저는 만일 실제 파프리카 한 쌍이 작품 사진 속 파프리카를
머리를 이용해서 과물 크라켄을 무찌르는데 성공합니다.
보게 된다면 어떤 느낌일지 상상해보았어요.

Horror S�morer
My Ego Is Getting Out of Control
These sweet crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows are a famous combination in the U.S. and are usually made with the help of campfire. The�re called S�mores, as in �Can I have some more(s�more)?� Are these made in Korea? The hot, roasted marshmallow is place between the chocolate and the cracker and eaten that way. But what if the marshmallows didn�t want to be part of the trio, and had to be baited into it? In this picture, the cracker is hiding with a match, waiting for the chocolate to lure the marshmallow closer.
By the time I made this image, I had become known for doing what I do-bringing objects to a sort of life, pretending they were living. Also, I had gotten enough attention that it was starting to affect my decisions on what I made. Sometimes I had become too self-conscious in my work. So this is a reaction against that and a way of making fun at my own expense. The piece recalls Michelangelo�s painting of God bringing Adam to life.

Perseus Potato I�ve had an idea for several years to make a stop action short film about vegetables in England of Henry the Eight�s time. It would star a vegetable executioner beheading criminal vegetables, and not just beheading them, but chopping them up entirely and then dicing them and throwing them in a pot. I never made that film, but it was the motivation for this image about the Greek hero Perseus after he beheaded Medusa, the snake-haired monster. In Greek mythology, Perseus displayed Medusa�s head to Atlas and turned him to stone. In the recent film Clash of the Titans, he uses the head to defeat the Kracken.
Edward Weston Loved Produce I�m drawn toward all types of art, but since I studied photography at University and am a photographer, of course photographers have a special place in my heart. The black and white photo is by the great Edward Weston, and appears in a book of his art that I borrowed from the library. His photograph of a single green pepper appears to me as a pair of peppers in an embrace. It feels erotic to me, and for Weston to conjure eroticism from a single pepper is magical to me. I imagined how a pair of peppers would feel seeing it together.

저와 아내는 둘 다 예술을 사랑합니다. 특히 아내는 화가 빈센트
멕시코의 국보급 여성화가 프리다 칼로의 자화상을 보고 난 후
영어로 �being a nut - 땅콩이 되다�는 정신적으로 건강하지
이 작품은 거대한 고릴라가 등장하는 영화 킹콩(King Kong)과
우리는 매년 여름 집 뒤뜰에 해바라기 꽃을 심고 가꿉니다. 반 고
가 코 밑에 거뭇거뭇한 수염을 없애지 않았을까요? 저는 프리다
복수를 위해 미치광이 노릇을 해요. 햄릿은 말 그대로 땅콩인 거
했습니다. 제 생각에는 두 단어가 서로 각운이 맞기 때문에 킹콩
의 해골을 들고 이렇게 혼자 말을 하지요. �아아, 불쌍한 요릭…
각이지요. 제 생각에는 이렇게 실없는 농담을 구현하기 위해 제
천 번쯤 업혀 다녔건만 지금은 이렇게, 생각만 해도 소름끼치는
같아요.
반 고흐를 무척 좋아하지요. 아내는 해바라기 꽃도 좋아합니다.
엉뚱한 생각을 하게 되었어요. 왜 빼어난 미모를 자랑하던 그녀
흐라는 이름은 이 특별한 이미지의 아이디어가 어디에서 나오게
가 스스로 면도한다는 상상만으로도 무척 즐거워졌어요.
되었는지 거의 설명해줄 수 있을 겁니다. 사람들이 반 고흐라는
이름을 들을 때 �*화가, *해바라기, *그는 자신의 귀를 잘랐다.�와
못한 사람을 뜻합니다. 셰익스피어 희곡 �햄릿�의 주인공 햄릿은
핑퐁(Ping-Pong 탁구) 두 단어 끝이 같은 글자라는 점에서 착안
죠. 제5막 1장의 공동묘지에서 헴릿은 왕의 어릿광대였던 요릭
을 작은 핑퐁 공으로 대체하면 되겠다고 생각했어요. 썰렁한 생
가 열심히 노력을 했다는 점이 관객으로 하여금 웃게 만드는 것
끝없는 익살과 재치, 기막힌 상상력을 가진 친구였지. 그의 등에
같은 이미지를 즉시 생각해낼 수 있기 때문입니다. 그래서 우리
는 해바라기는 반 고흐의 재현이라는 것을 보여주려고 해바라기
군. 여기에 달려있을 입술에 내가 얼마나 자주 입을 맞췄던가. 모
가 이젤 앞에서 화가의 포즈를 취하고, 몇 장의 꽃잎을 칼로 잘라
든 이들을 웃음바다로 만들던 그대의 익살과 신명 나던 입담, 노 래는 죄다 어디로 가버렸는가?� 이 장면이 영감을 주어 땅콩과
붕대를 감아 반 고흐의 잘린 귀를 연출했습니다.
해골의 엽기적 조합이 태어나게 된 거죠.

My wife�s favorite painter is Vincent Van Gogh, and he is famous for one thing other than his art - he cut off his ear. Also, his sunflower paintings are some of his most famous. So here is a sunflower standing in for Vincent, and it has lost it�s own �ear.�
I respect Frida Kahlo�s choice not to shave her mustache, but I�m a childish person so I had some fun with her anyway. I bought the postcard from an art museum gift shop, and just had to do something with it. I wish it could have been smarter, but it is what it is. If I get an idea, I almost always follow through with it, good or bad!
In the Shakespeare play Hamlet , Hamlet holds the skull of a person he once knew. Peanuts are good objects for me to work with because they have an outside and a softer inside, which can have meanings comparable with humans. The title Hamlet Was a Nut has two meanings, in that in the photo Hamlet is actually a peanut, and being a nut in English menas being not well mentally. In the play, Hamlet seemed somewhat insane.
This work is simply based on the fact that the movie creature King Kong rhymes with Ping Pong (the table tennis game). I thought that since they rhymed, I could replace the monster with the tiny ball. It�s a silly idea, and I think it makes people laugh a little because I would go through all the trouble to make a photo from such a bad joke!

여자의 몸과 배를 비교한 작품의 아이디어는 �다운튼 애비
저는 현대 공포영화 팬은 아니지만 이상하게도 몇몇 공포영화의 스
두루마리 화장지의 갈색 휴지심은 제 작품 속에 종종 등장합니다.
가 항상 드레스처럼 보였어요. 하지만 컵 케익 드레스 자락은 위로 올
영국 귀족사회와 그들을 보좌하는 하인들의 생활상을 다룬 이
Texas Chainsaw Massacre)>이라는 공포영화가 미국에서 상영되
이지요. 이 작품에서 휴지는 붕대역할을 합니다. 거의 다 쓴 화장
을 보면서 많은 아이디어를 얻었어요. 제겐 컵 케익을 감싸는 유산지 라가지, 여자들의 드레스 자락처럼 아래로 내려가지는 않지요. 문득
(Downton Abbey)�라는 영국 인기 TV 드라마에서 얻었어요. 드라마에서 귀족여자들은 몸매 교정 속옷인 코르셋을 입었는
데 마치 고문 기구처럼 보였어요. 저는 배가 코르셋을 입은 작
컵 케익 유산지가 바람에 휘날려 위로 뒤집히는 순간을 상상하다가
전설적인 미국 영화배우 마릴린 먼로를 떠올렸어요. 1955년 개봉된
그럴 필요성을 느끼지 못했어요. 배경 속 가구는 모두 미니어
껍질을 뒤집어쓰면 어떨까 하는 아이디어가 떠올랐습니다. 이 작품
날리게 되지요. 영화사의 명장면으로 꼽히는 강렬한 이미지를 작품
처 인형가게에서 구입한 겁니다.
에 표현하고 싶었어요. 마릴린이 금발인 점을 고려해 노란색 설탕장
었습니다. 살인마 식인가족이 등장하고, 그들 중 한 명이 희생자의
무 끔찍해서 전혀 보고 싶지 않았고, 실제로 본 적도 없지만 영화의
제 평소 작품과는 달리 캐릭터의 팔다리를 만들지 않았어요.
만일 휴지심이 살아있는 생명체라면 휴지는 옷이거나 피부인 셈 지가 휴지심을 붕대처럼 너덜너덜 감싸고 있어요. 오래된 공포

Victorian Fruit
Marilyn I worked as a baker in a grocery store for several years, and many ideas came to me from seeing food objects around me all day. Cupcake wrappers always seemed like dresses to me, but when they are on Cupcakes, the dresses are up, not down like a woman would wear. But when I think of a dress blowing up in the ari, I think of the old American film star and icon, Marilyn Monroe. In the film the Seven Year Itch , her character walks on a subway grate as a train passes below. The train makes a strong breeze which blows her dress up into the air. The image is very famous now. I used a normal cupcake with yellow icing because Marilyn was blond, added the extra cupcake wrapper as her skirt, and simply posed her similar to the character in the film.

I�ve made no less than four works based on comparing pears and people. I believe I got the idea for this one after watching a British program called Downton Abbey . In that show I believe women are wearing corsets, which look like torturous devices. I thought it would be an interesting challenge to make one to look like it�s shaping a pear. It�s one of the unusual works I�ve made with no arms or legs. I just didn�t think it needed anything else. The furniture is all from a miniature dollhouse supply store.

The Mummy�s Curse? He�s Only 1 Ply
Banana Chainsaw Massacre I�m actually not a modern horror movie fan, but I find some of their stories funny in a strange way. In 1973, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was in American theaters, and it�s about a family of cannibals, with one wearing the facial skin of a victim. I don�t care to ever watch it, but just knowing of it�s existence gave me the idea of a banana wearing the skin of another banana. In my photo, the bad banana has made a ice cream based dessert that�s called a Banana Split because it contains a banana split down the middle. I made the chainsaw from a plastic sculpture material that is baked to make harden. The most difficult part of working with bananas is because they are so soft, they begin to bruise and brown quickly, and are very difficult to make to stand on their own!
Toilet paper tubes have appeared in a few of my works as characters. If toilet paper tubes were living beings, the tissue could be their clothing, or skin, or in this case bandages. And almost empty toilet paper tube looks similar to a mummy in old horror movies, with bandages hanging loosely around the body. I believe I came up with the idea after watching Boris Karloof in The Mummy, a film made in 1932. He plays and Egyptian Mummy who comes to life to the horror of archeologist. Making the background details was fun.

키위가 면도하는 이 작품의 주제는 체모에 관한 겁니다. 대부분
아침식사가 준비되었어요. 구운 빵 표면을 주목해보세요. 여름
저는 지난 몇 년간 살이 많이 쪘어요. 비만의 주된 원인은 맥주를
씨를 뺀 과육을 거울에 비춰보는 복숭아를 상상해보았어요. 실
제이죠. 저는 꽤 털이 많은 편이라서 해변에 가기 전에 제모에 대
니다. 저는 구릿빛 피부로 태운 효과와 하얀 속살의 대비를 강조
히 남긴 사과를 보면 마치 사과의 몸무게가 많이 빠진 것처럼
품에서는 여자의 벗은 엉덩이나 탐스런 젖가슴을 복숭아에 비유
일로 감싸주었어요.
저는 제 모습 그대로 사는 것에 만족할 수 밖에요.
의 아시아계 남성들은 별 문제를 겪지 않는 것으로 알고 있는 주
햇볕 아래 비키니 수영복을 입고 살을 태우면 이런 모양이 될 겁
한 부담감을 느끼곤 해요. 많은 남성들이 왁싱으로 제모를 하거
하기 위해 빵을 굽기 전, 비키니 수영복 자국 부분은 알루미늄 호

느껴졌어요. 살을 빼는 일은 참으로 고통스러운 과정입니다.
고 들었어요. 신라시대 진지왕을 배경으로 한 전설에 등장하는
도화녀(桃花女) 는 왕이 한 눈에 반할 만큼 절세미인이었다고 하
면서 말이죠.

Toast shows tan lines, which gives the feeling of nudity, and offers itself to the viewers as breakfast. I dressed the bread in an aluminium foil bikini before toasting it.
This is about something I don�t believe a lot of asian men have trouble with – body hair. I have a fair amount and I must admit to feeling pressured to get rid of it before I visited beaches. Many men get it waxed or otherwise removed, but I still have mine. Some day when having a hairy chest is back in style I will be ready and waiting!

I�ve been gaining weight for the last several years (mainly because I enjoy beer way too much), and I noticed that apples eaten with their ends intact look like they�ve lost a lot of weight. Quite a painful process to go through to lose weight though, so I�m happy to stay how I am.
I imagined a peach without the seed that looked at its pulp in the mirror. In fact, peaches look a lot like female bodies. In a legend or literary work, a woman's naked bottom or breasts are often described as peaches. I learned that in Korea peach blossoms symbolize beautiful women. The Dohwanyeo from a legend of the King of Jin-ji in the Silla era was said to be a matchless beauty that the king fell in love with her at first sight.

저는 오랫동안 주로 포장재로 사용되는 비닐 에어캡(Bubble

본 순간 그 생각이 떠올랐어요. 제 작업의 가장 큰 장점은 사진을

주름을 없애려고 �마스크 팩�을 붙이는 모습을 연출하면 재밌겠다
고 생각했어요. �Smooth as Glass�라는 제목은 �이 마스크 팩은 당신의 피부를 유리처럼 매끄럽게 만들어 줄 거�라는 광고문구에
서 착안했어요. 제겐 완전히 �외국적인 말�로 느껴졌어요.

It�s Difficult Not to Pot Them
Smooth as Glass
I had this idea of comparing bubble wrap to acne for a long while, but I couldn�t figure how to show it clearly. Then one day I realized that I should simply make a basic wire body, and the head should be a flat sheet of bubble wrap like this.
I did a little research on the jujubes after I ate a few (not that tasty!). I read that they are believed to have properties that keep skin looking young, which I found amusing because they can look so wrinkled. After also doing some research on the moisturizing masks that many in Korea wear, I thought it would be interesting if jujubes tried to solve their wrinkle problems with masks. I thought of the title after reading ads about facial masks saying they would help make skin as smooth as glass, which is an entirely foreign saying to me.

I�m interested in the details of this type of cheese. I find the holes interesting, even thought it�s one of my least favorites to eat. Along with tattoos, having oneself pierced in different parts of the body has been popular in the U.S. for a while now. It seems people are constantly searching for new parts of the body to pierce. So I wondered if this cheese got it�s shape from piercing. He�s raising his hands in a devil�s horns sign, further showing how edgy and cool his is.
This is a scene where a stylish girl is going out to the city for a walk with her two little puppies. With the nail polish bottle, I expressed the beauty and sophisticated fashion sense of the city girl. And the two nail clippers are used to represent the cute appearance of the puppies. The girl�s glittering beauty seems almost seductive like the red nail polish.

종 우승자였어요. 여러 개의 챕스틱 립밤을 사서 분해하고 때려
정도로 과학적이고 흥미진진합니다.
다는 것을 알았죠. 마트에 가서 2.95달러에 미니스케이트 보드
이라고 상상해보았습니다. 왕거미 스카치테이프가 작은 벌레 색 거미줄을 쳐서 먹잇감을 사냥하는 거미의 포획 기술은 탄복할

바쁘다, 바쁘다, 바뻐!
드디어 기다리고 기다리던 출발일! 마지막으로 빠뜨린 여행준비
로 만들어졌어요. 그는 제 블로그에서 진행한 아이디어 대회 최
물이 없는지도 모두 확인했어요. 지금 곧 바로 출발할 일만 남았
부수고, 자르기도 하다가 마침내 챕스틱 뚜껑이 헬멧처럼 보인
다고 느껴질까요?
이 작품의 아이디어는 �양초는 양쪽 끝에 동시에 불을 붙이면 안
된다.�라는 격언에서 얻었어요. 과욕을 부려 일을 하거나 동시에
죠. 저는 왜 여행을 떠나기 위한 출발과 골프 스윙이 공통점이 있

This Chap Sticks the Landing
Catching a Flight
On my blog I used to have people suggest things for me to use in my work. One time the object which received the most votes was Chapstick, a brand of medicated wax which is purchased in this form to use on lips to keep them healthy. You probably have this in Korea, but I�m unsure. Anyway, I purchased several of them and studied them for several hours. Finally I lost patience and began smashing the wax of one of them, and I realized that it�s protective cover was like a little helmet that it needed so it wouldn�t get hurt. The only question then was what could it be doing to accidentally smash it�s head, and I found this tiny skateboard in the toy section of a convenience store. When I speak to school children, I tell them this is why they should wear their helmets when skating!
Golf is mainly the sport of business men, so I made the golf ball look like an executive who is leaving on a business trip. I made his hat and luggage out of clay. He looks like he�s patiently waiting. Personally, I cannot stand golf.

This one is build on the saying �You shouldn�t burn the candle at both ends.� It�s a good saying, because so many people take pride about being busy these days, and some people would even feel guilty just relaxing for a bit. 저는 이 조그만 모래시계로 몇몇 사람을 창조했어요. 그들이 모

아이 계란 한 개가 엄마에게 드릴 감사의 카드를 들고 엄마 계란
예전에 한 브랜드 주방용품 회사 대표와 만난 적이 있어요. 그는

How Much Time Is Left
My Dad Can Pound Your Dad
One day I found an hourglass timer even smaller than the one I knew we already had. It looked like a child compared to the other one, so I decided to emphasize that relationship. I�ve created several people from these small timers, and I think they all say the same thing. Time is passing for all of us, so are we using it in the best way? The challenge of using these timers is that the sand is constantly falling, so I have to turn the characters upside down occasionally while photographing them. Also it was difficult getting the sand to be of the amount I wanted in both timers. I was proud of myself for being able to balance both of these characters as you see them.
The nail finally gets to be the bully, but will soon find out that the usual order of things is going to be restored. The tiny hammer was purchased from a miniature supply store. Building dollhouses, and creating and furnishing miniature room designs is a somewhat popular hobby in the U.S. If an object exists in a regular size house, chances are you can buy it in miniature form to decorate a miniature house. If something miniature isn�t already available, there are many artisans who will create it for a price. There are many times I will make something for my work, but if a good version of the thing is available for a good price, I have no problem buying it. I don�t consider my work about making objects, I consider my work creating pictures.

The Egg waits too long to visit his mother. In his hand he holds a card he was planning to give to her. I hardboiled the egg so it would hold the wires after I inserted them into holes I drilled in the shell. I stood him up on a table and set all of my photography lights, then took a few digital test photos. After I was all set, I went out and purchased a rotisserie chicken, then returned and put it on the table with the egg. After a few minutes, I was finished with the photo and we ate the chicken for dinner. It was still hot! I sometimes relate to the characters I create, and this egg was no different. I think it helps me to do what I do, but I felt sad as I looked at the digital photo on my computer screen the next day. I wondered if the image was too depressing, so I sent it to my brother and he replied that it was hilarious. So I put it on the internet and it became quite popular. It�s now one of my favorites, because of it being a bit bittersweet. To laugh at the image is something we�re not sure if we should do, but most of us do anyway.
Jump! I met the CEO of OXO brand kitchen implements at a conference, and he asked me to make a few email adds for his company. Here an OXO whisk asks an egg to jump into a mixing bowl, instead of talking him out of ending his life.

꼬마 흰 계란이 �Colored Only�라고 적힌 부활절 계란 바구니
땅콩 한 개가 다른 땅콩에게 껍질을 반으로 갈라 알맹이를 보여
예전에 작은 지역신문에 제 인터뷰 기사가 실렸어요. 처음으로 제
을 열어 보인 걸까요? 아니면 단지 땅콩 알맹이(his nuts는 고환
사를 읽으니 부끄러웠어요. 저의 쑥스럽고 민망한 기분을 표현하
콩은 겉껍질과 속껍질이 있는데다 껍질을 벗겨내면 부드러운 알
훈련 용도로 사용되는 신문과 개(dog)의 품종에서 유래된 핫도그
줍니다. 무슨 억울한 일을 당해 자신의 결백함을 증명하려고 속

역사에서 얻었어요. 미국은 과거 인종차별의 어두운 역사가 있

위장술
과거에 원시인들이 순록 가죽과 뿔로 위장하고 사냥감에게 살금
작업이 기사화되어 사람들에게 소개된 거죠. 제가 저의 인터뷰 기

Eggregation
Exhibition
The title rhymes with segregation, but begins with �egg.� Segregation was the standard way of things in the American southern states until the 1960�s. �Colored Only� and �White Only� were common signs marking which drinking fountains, restaurants, theater seats, etc were to be used by black and white peoples. �Colored Only� places and things were always the ones whites would rather not use anyway. During the holiday called Easter, hard boiled eggs are colored with paints or dyes, and placed in baskets, along with candy and given to children. No white egg would ever be put in an Easter basket, and this little white egg is sad he�s not colored. �Colored� is an out of date term for African Americans, but it�s what dyed eggs are called, so I think it all works okay for this piece.
A peanut ripping his shell open to show the other his insides. Is he trying to show his true self, or is he just showing nis nuts (another term for testicles)?

Some Self-Deprecating Humor
Primitive Citrus Were
In the past I�ve called this one �Some Self Defecating Humor� because of what the hot dog is doing to the article about me. A small, local newspaper interviewed me and it may have been the first time someone wrote about my work in print. It was embarrassing to read, so I used the paper to help train this hot dog on where to let his beans out.
Very Clever Hunters In this image, an orange takes the place of a hunter of 100,000 years ago. The banana is its prey. I remember seeing illustrations in school books showing primitive hunters sneaking up on antelopes and deer while hiding themselves the pelts of those animals. I always wondered how well that worked. Ijust can�t believe that it would. Anyway, the orange here is camouflaging itself in another banana�s skin.

잔 다르크 마시멜로
이 작업 중 바나나를 다루는 일이 가장 어려웠어요. 바나나는 굉
예전에 사람들이 당근에 구멍을 뚫는 것을 보고 재미있겠다고
마시멜로를 불에 구어 먹는 장면을 보고 15세기 프랑스의 여성
저는 변색된 바나나를 강펀치에 두들겨 맞고 KO 패 당한 복서의
면이죠. 그렇지만 이 사진은 또 다른 장면과 연결되는데, 아빠 당
을 당했지요. 나라를 구하고도 억울하게 죽임을 당한 잔을 불로
바나나 복서를 권투장 위에 세우는 일은 정말로 어려웠어요!
근 엄마는 무릎을 꿇고 아빠의 죽음에 충격을 받았을 아이 당근
장히 부드럽기 때문에 금방 멍이 들거나 갈색으로 변하곤 했어요.
생각해서 이 당근 아기와 엄마를 만들었어요. 아주 감동적인 장 근이 살해당해서 샐러드가 되어있는 아주 잔인한 이야기죠. 당
몸에 난 상처를 표현하는데 활용했어요. 붉은 색 권투 장갑을 낀
마시멜로의 최후
저는 이 머그잔을 작품에 사용하기 위해 특별히 구입했어요. 코
코아는 아내가 장인어른으로부터 크리스마스 선물로 받은 겁니
영웅 잔다르크를 떠올렸습니다. 잔은 19세에 마녀로 몰려 화형식
다. 어느 날 집안 식료품 저장실에서 작품에 사용할 물건을 찾다 가 큰 마시멜로 봉지를 발견했어요. 승자 마시멜로가 패자 마시
공격당하는 마시멜로에 비유한 점이 마음에 걸리네요. 미안해요.
멜로를 코코아 잔에 빠뜨려 익사시키는 잔혹한 이미지를 구현하
을 품 안에 꼭 감싸줍니다. 엄마 당근은 강한 모성애를 발휘해 꿋
는데 그렇게 많은 시간이 걸리지 않았습니다.
꿋하게 슬픔을 이겨내고 혼자서도 아이를 잘 키워냅니다.

Badly Bruised
Salad Is Murder
Just once explanation on how bananas get bruised. I think I�ve heard the sounds of crowds cheering coming from out kitchen in the middle of the night. The difficult part of photographing bananas like this is they are so soft and are difficult to make stand up (they are very lazy). The also bruise so quickly that I have to work very fast to make the image.
I made this to poke a little fun at vegetarians(which my wife is). What if the relatives of the vegetables used in a salad felt sad for the loss of their loved ones?

Joan of Marshmallow
Aaaargh-shmallows!
Joan of Arc was 19 when she was burned at the stake in France as a martyr. I know very little about Joan, but I know that being burned at the stake reminds me of roasting marshmallows over an open fire. Sorry Joan!
I bought this mug especially for this image. My wife received the hot cocoa as a Christmas gift from my father. One day while searching our pantry for an object to make into art, I found a bag of large marshmallows, and it didn�t take terribly long to figure out what kind of image to make. The title is a combination of �aargh�, a sort of sound we imagine old world pirates making, and the word marshmallow.

아직까지 저는 이런 종류의 라면을 먹은 적이 없었지만 한 번 먹
엉뚱한 발상이지만 이탈리안 음식과 이탈리아의 시칠리아 섬에
콘플레이크는 아침 식사용 시리얼로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 콘플
제가 아는 여자 분은 괴상한 수집품들을 갖고 있어요. 소의 태
물이 끓기 전까지 수면 위에 떠 있다가 물이 끓고 나면 쉽게 부서
파스타 국수, 케첩만으로도 총을 쏘는 인물과 총에 맞아 죽어가
않으면 시리얼이 축축하게 젖어 녹아버리거든요. 콘플레이크처
겨 있었어요. 마치 생물학 교실이나 박물관을 떠올리게 했죠. 그
품을 포함한 저의 다른 작품의 핵심은 음식이나 일상의 작은 물

The End of Relationship I had never had that sort of noodle soup, but I have several times now. I found it interesting that the brick of noodles floated in the water until the water becomes hot, and then it falls apart easily. It reminded me of a raft. Then it was only a matter of choosing which characters should be shown on a raft, and how the story would go.

Italian Food Is Serious Business
Cereal Killer
The American mafia was Sicilian and Italian families (think �The Godfather� movies). What if the cooking tools of an Italian kitchen were also criminals? Like the cheese of my piece �Bad Cheese�, I�m intrigued by the holes in the wooden spoon, and I wonder how they got there. This image is one possible explanation.
Corn flakes are a well known breakfast cereal in the U.S. Once milk is poured over them though, they must be eaten somewhat quickly or they will become soggy. Like cornflakes, people can come to bad ends while swimming. The key to this and many of my other works is finding something that can really happen to food or other small objects and how it can remind us of what happens in the human world.
Preserved Specimen Pickles, olives, and other whole vegetables remind me of my school biology classes where the teacher would have specimens of sharks, baby pigs, and other animals preserved in jars. After seeing it, that image stuck in my head. And one day I went to the supermarket and saw a pickle in these big jars. It looked like living creatures that were pickled. I had a lot of difficulties implementing it as a work, because moving the hand was hard. I was trying to make the hand, one way it looked like waving, one way it looked like sucking his thumb. I wanted him to looked like uncomfortable. This is the fifth shot.

마지막 작품
뇌를 먹는 땅콩 좀비
저는 자살과 관련된 여러 작품들을 만들었는데, 어떤 사람들은
그걸 마음에 들어 하지 않았어요. 사실 저는 몇 년간 우울증을 겪
땅콩 좀비들을 조각하면서 하루를 보냈던 적이 있었어요. 그 작

His Last Piece Was Very Cerebral
Zombies Are Nuts about Brains
I�ve made several suicide related images, and some people have a problem with them. The thing is, I�ve suffered from clinical depression over the years, and yes, have even had thoughts of suicide now and then. I�ve lived through those dark times and I�ll now quite happily make work about suicide, especially since I feel like I�m making fun of it. It�s not a brooding, romantic thing to do, it�s a stupid, unfortunate thing, and I�m glad if I can bring the subject into conversation.
I spent a day carving the peanut zombies, thinking the whole time how strange it was to be doing it. I believe I found the tiny axe at a miniatures store. I gave the zombies a light white wash with pain to make them look different than their victim. This is another rare time where I added faces, but they look good. As soon as I posted the photo online it was very popular. It may be the work I�m most known for. I like that each zombie has a little different look.

From the Bat Cave Having something visibly to others in your nose is knows as �having a bat in the cave.� I found a little rubber bat in a toy store, so I bought it and decided to make a photo about just that. I put one end of a piece of wire in the bat, and the other end in a tiny cork, which I put up my nose. If I have an idea, I�m not afraid to make myself look ridiculous to make it if I have to. You do what you have to do to make your ideas happen, no matter how strange. The key is to not take yourself so seriously.
I see the short one in the middle as the boss zombie, the one eating on the left his number 2 man, and the one with the axe in the head as the dummy of the three. Someone said that zombies are killed by hitting them in the head with an axe, so �how is he still going?� I really don�t know. Maybe peanut zombies are especially magical.

나는 언제나 카메라 뒤에 숨는다
폰-스타쉬로 알려진 특별한 종류의 콧수염이 있습니다. 1970-

작품은 여자들과 조그만 영화 스태프 피규어들을 인터넷에서 발
에 가장 유명한 사진은 안드레아스 피닝거(Andreas Feininger)
80년대 미국의 남자 포르노 스타들 때문에 잘 알려졌지요. 이
신의 얼굴 앞에 카메라를 대고 셀카를 찍습니다. 이러한 사진 중
견하고, 저는 피규어들과 미니어처 정원 풀밭 재료를 활용해 저
가 1955년에 찍은 이 사진이지요. 그의 셀카 이후로 사람들은
은 2016년 초, 얼굴에 난 이상한 털에 관한 이미지들 중의 하나
신하고 덜 지루한 무언가를 생각해내면 좋겠어요.
만의 폰-스타쉬 수염을 만들어 보고 싶다고 생각했어요. 이 사진
셀카를 멈추지 않았어요. 저는 사람들이 셀카 보다는 조금 더 참
입니다. 제 아내가 어시스턴트로 도움을 주었고 저는 모델이며
감독관 역할을 했고 딸이 사진을 찍었습니다. 가족과 한 팀이 되 어 일하는 것은 즐거운 경험이었습니다.

I Always Hide Behind the Camera
There is a certain kind of mustache that is widely known as the porn-stache, because it was popular with American male porn stars of the 1970�s and 80�s. When I was these little women online, and then saw the tiny film crew, I got the idea of wearing on my �porn-stache� made from the characters and a bit of material used for grass in miniature landscapes. The photo is from a group of strange facial hair images I did in early 2016. My wife was the assistant, I was model and over-seer, and my daughter was photographer. I was fun working as a team.
Once can see profile photos online of thousands of photographers holding their cameras in front of their face. The most famous of this kind of photo is by Andreas Feininger from 1955, and people have done it non-stop ever since. I wish people would try to think up something new and not be so damn boring.
