In the coming year, we will be reserving this spot in our catalog for our Program Directors. Our Directors have their finger on the pulse of our school and the artists within. It is our hope that this will give our community an opportunity to hear first-hand about the creative culture within each studio/ department. Thank you, directors and faculty, for your dedication to the arts and to Sawtooth. - Amy Jordan Emily Ortiz Badalamente was the Graphics and Special Projects assistant from September of 2017 to January of 2018. She is now Director of Art + Wellness, Grants and Special Projects position in April of 2019. Art + Wellness Director Emily Ortiz Badalamente After studying art at Wake Forest University, Emily received her master’s degree in Art Therapy and Counseling from the George Washington University in Washington, DC and is a provisionally registered Art Therapist. She has provided art therapy and therapeutic art programming in mental health treatment centers, community outreach programs, with adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and with cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. She is passionate about the positive effect that artmaking has on wellbeing for all individuals. As an artist, Emily works in a variety of media, with a focus on textiles and painting. ________________________________________

Every Art + Wellness activity that I attend reminds me of how impactful the creative process can be, especially for those experiencing a medical crisis or supporting a loved one through a difficult time. When a caregiver tells me that our art programs are the only bright spot during her husbands’ oncology treatments, or a SECU House guest attends every Monday night art program during her four-month stay away from home, I am even more grateful to our community for supporting us in doing this impactful work. As the Art + Wellness program grows, I am excited to continue welcoming new artists into our Sawtooth community to experience the wellness that exists in all our studios. – Emily Ortiz Badalamente

Sawtooth School for Visual Art is a non-profit community school. We count on our members to support our mission. We ask that you consider becoming a member this year and every year! Annual (12 month) membership term.

As many in our community know, the studios here at Sawtooth are a place of community, learning, and creative expression. As an art therapist, I often hear from artists and students that the studio is a place of respite where they come to rejuvenate, connect, and escape. Every day, we see art and wellness coinciding in our studios. As the Director of Art + Wellness at Sawtooth, I am lucky to be able to see how we bring that wellness outside of Sawtooth’s walls as well. To me, the Art + Wellness program at Sawtooth is a perfect illustration of the symbiotic relationship between Sawtooth and our community. Our outreach and community support programs could not exist without the support that we receive. Our Art + Wellness outreach with local cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers is generously funded by the Greer Foundation. Partnerships with local institutions, including Wake Forest Baptist Health, Trellis Supportive Care, Cancer Services Inc., SECU Family House, Wake Forest University, and Novant’s Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center, allow our art programming to reach over a thousand individuals in our community each year. Our Art + Wellness instructors adapt instruction in pastels, printmaking, watercolors, fibers and other media to teach quality arts programming in hospitals, waiting rooms, and even the dining room of the SECU Family House. Every month, cancer survivors gather at Sawtooth to share community and learn new art processes in the studio environment. In our pilot program with Trellis Supportive Care, grieving adults met at Sawtooth for a seven-week grief support series focusing on creative selfcare.

Instructor Alex Norwood In August of 2011 we started the Artistic Rehabilitative Therapy (ART) at TFH. These are weekly informal guided art sessions to produce paintings or other mixed media artworks. One goal is to develop self-appreciation for the creative abilities of each participant. We also hope to create a quiet, introspective, unwinding place for men in the program. We hope this will provide a full exposure to materials and processes of the professional artist, from concept to exhibitions. - Alex Norwood September Opening Reception September 6th, 5 - 7pm by Mariyah Sultan Vietnam Photographs from North Carolina Veterans - The Memories They Brought Home Martin Tucker’s book of Vietnam photos from N.C. veterans started as a darkroom class at Sawtooth.
