FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT As someone who’s had a long-time relationship with Sawtooth from a wide range of perspectives, I marvel at the many ways Sawtooth involves and connects with its community. I’ve been a parent of youth camp students, a student in multiple departments, an exhibiting artist, a donor, a member of the Board of Directors and this year, President of the Board. In 1998 I signed up for a 4-week introductory drawing class. I started out with no drawing skills, but the instructor literally opened my eyes to see things in a way that allowed me to draw them, recognizing and capturing shadows and light. The koala I sketched in that class was selected for Sawtooth’s student show that year. Now Sawtooth is where I love to be for taking classes, meeting new and existing friends, learning new creative skills, and making art.

This year has been notable Sawtooth community in many ways. As always, we taught a wide variety of students throughout the year, as well as in a series of summer camps for schoolchildren. We offered full-scholarship art classes for children whose school does not offer an arts curriculum and whose parents can’t afford to send them to Sawtooth. We put on our very first Metal Clay Symposium that brought artists together from around the country to learn and collaborate. We offered regularly scheduled classes in many disciplines for a day, a weekend, or over the course of multiple weeks to students of all ages and presented seminars by visiting artists. We were able to serve thousands of people in our community.

We started the year by making tremendous progress on our Major Gifts Campaign. And now we are reaping the benefits by replacing outdated equipment – starting with the most requested item – new chairs for our classrooms. We know it’s not easy to sit for hours in an uncomfortable chair – we hope this first upgrade will benefit many students in their creative process. And that’s just the start. We have begun plans to make improvements to our class registration system and for special class opportunities for next year.

SAWTOOTH’S MEMBER MONDAY DISCOUNTS Is your Sawtooth membership current? Now’s a good time to check, because we’re holding MEMBER MONDAYS in the Sawtooth Shop. Sawtooth members will now get a 10% discount on all their purchases made from the Shop on Mondays throughout the year (except during Deck the Halls). This is just one more way for Sawtooth to say “thank you” to our members. If you’re not a member, now is a good time to buy. Registration discounts on classes and workshops combined with this discount on fine crafts and art produced by local and regional artists make it one of the best values in the City of Arts and Innovation!

Particularly difficult for us was the resignation for health reasons of JoAnne Vernon, our Executive Director. For those of you who know her personally, you can imagine the void this created in the building. Fortunately, Kevin Mundy, filling in as Interim Executive Director, and the rest of the staff have kept the school running and are looking forward and planning for our future. We are in the closing stages of our search for JoAnne’s replacement and hope to have an announcement soon. I want to thank you for the role that you played in this year’s efforts. Whether you took a class, enrolled your children, became a member, volunteered or made a gift, you contributed to our success. As we close in on the end of our fiscal year, I have a request to make. I invite you to renew your commitment to “Find the Artist in You”. Find a new way to make Sawtooth a part of your life -- try a new class, bring a new friend, sponsor a new student. Our community grows and is strengthened by your presence and involvement. I think you will find, as I have, that the rewards of creative expression are well worth the effort. With our deepest thanks, Elizabeth Repetti, President, Board of Directors

VISITING ARTIST WORKSHOPS

July 15 & 16, 2017 Visiting Artist Workshop with Christopher Darway 5311. 22K Gold Fusion on Copper or Silver This workshop will introduce a new method developed by Chris Darway that allows application of 22k gold (specifically the Aura 22 product) to fine silver, sterling silver and copper sheet metal. Using Aura 22 (containing 91.6% pure gold and 8.4% pure silver) requires no special equipment, just a simple handheld torch. Once fused to the surface, the metal with gold applied can be rolled, enameled, fold formed, soldered on, drilled, sawed, etched and more to create finished jewelry with 22k gold embellishments! Aura 22 was originally developed as an alternative to Keum-Boo. This new technique provides traditional metalsmiths with the perfect vehicle for economically adding gold to fabricated pieces. A kit fee will be collected during the workshop which includes the Aura 22. Jewelry fabrication experience is helpful. Instructor Christopher Darway Location: Metals Studio Early Registration $230 (member $200) Regular Registration $250 (member $220) Saturday and Sunday, 7/15 & 7/16, 9:30 am – 5:00 pm
