Thank you for taking the time to review our winter catalog. I think that you will find exceptional offerings in all disciplines. Because our directors are dedicated to their craft, I have asked them to use this space to inform our community about their programming and the communities within.

Jessica Tefft came on board as Digital Arts Director about a year ago, after serving on our Board of Directors. In the short time that she has been on staff at Sawtooth, she has revamped our Digital Arts department, adding new classes and technology.

Jessie also served as Interim Photography Director, later taking on both roles. Jessie’s background as a photojournalist brings a new dimension to her work as an artist and artistic director. We are fortunate to have her expertise and enthusiasm at Sawtooth. http://www.jessicatefft.com/

I’m constantly amazed at the ways technology has created innovation and experimentation in art-making forms and processes. As a program director at Sawtooth, my fascination with new technology has motivated me to bring these new mediums through our doors.

Thanks to the time and effort of an incredibly dedicated staff we are offering classes in Virtual Reality Illustration for the first time this winter. We’ll provide students with Oculus Quest headsets and Google Tilt Brush so they can learn to create their own 3D art. It used to be that walking through a painting was something for a Sci-Fi movie. Now you can walk through your own in one of our classrooms. The great thing about this new technology is that it is intuitive and easy to learn.

And these aren’t the only new classes in the digital arts department. We acquired six new Huion GT 190 drawing tablets. This has opened up vast possibilities. We now have classes in digital comics, illustrations and animation. Along with the new technology came talented instructors excited to teach these skills to the community.

Analog and digital can complement one another when you’re creating art.

One such opportunity is our class in Circuitry and Sewing. Students learn simple coding of a circuit, then sew it with conductive thread into interactive wearables. We also have another class where we design fabric using Adobe Photoshop and make a unique textile design. We then print the digital designs and sew a functional wearable art piece.

All of this is possible because everyday people support Sawtooth through volunteering, taking classes, teaching and gifts. We truly are a community school.

WORKSHOPS 2375. Portrait Sculpture in Terra Cotta Workshop Ever wonder if you could sculpt a portrait? You can! In this beginning portrait workshop, explore the anatomy of the human head using a well-defined process to successfully create a ¾ scale portrait of your choice. Join with a partner and sculpt one another or bring a friend to model for you! Otherwise, come prepared with black and white 8” x 10” photocopies of your image. (Profile as well as frontal images.) You will have use of open studio time during the course of the workshop.

Sculpt Your Dog in Terra Cotta Workshop Love your dog? We do, too! Learn about canine anatomy as you learn to sculpt your dog at rest or sitting loyally by your side. In this workshop, you will build a small clay sculpture of your dog and learn various ways to shape clay to create a fluffy, curly or smooth coated appearance. Please bring photocopies of multiple views of your dog on the first night of class as well as a close up of their head profile.

Experience the immediate gratification of pulling your red hot pieces out of the kiln and seeing the finished glaze results in fifteen minutes. Experiment with numerous glazing options. Firing space is limited. You may bring three bisque pieces no taller than 9” and no wider than 5”.

VISITING ARTIST WORKSHOP 2407. Demonstration Workshop with Jason Stockman This workshop will focus on form and surface with an emphasis on color. The design process from inspiration, prototyping, and creation will be discussed and demonstrated with wheel-thrown, hand-built, and simple slump mold making. We will show students how to make and use custom templates and tools for those unique shapes. Forms will range from utilitarian-ware like bowls and cups to more decorative pieces such as bottles. Using a process of replication will allow the creation of a form that can be explored with a variety of colors. We will also delve into the use of color and the psychological relation to emotion, identity and more.

Directly following graduate school at Edinboro University Pennsylvania, Jason continued in the academic world, becoming an Assistant Professor at a small liberal arts college in Ohio. After four years it was time for a change, so he moved to Florida for a warmer lifestyle that allows those long walks on the beach. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Ceramics and 3-D program head at State College of Florida in Bradenton, FL.

DIGITAL ARTS

1019. Beginning Rotoscope Animation Workshop Rotoscope animation is a technique that animators use to create animation from live-action video images.

Originally, animators projected photographed liveaction movie images onto a glass panel and traced over the image, frame-by-frame. Now it can be done on a computer. This is an introductory course in bringing a video clip into Adobe Photoshop and tracing over it. No experience required but basic computer skills necessary. Beginning Animation Workshop Students will be introduced to the 12 principles of animation and will be able to practice basic animation by creating a ball bounce looping animation, as well as a simple character walk cycle. Students will get to use Adobe Photoshop and the drawing tablets to create their animations. No experience required but basic computer skills necessary. COMICS & ANIMATION 118. Beginning Character Design Students will learn what makes for effective character design, and apply these principles to generate their own character, starting the silhouette technique and iterating on their design to create a finished character. They will design their characters using photoshop, drawing tablets and pen and paper. If we have time we will also create a character sheet for the finished character. No experience required but basic computer skills necessary. (age 16-adult) Instructor Natalia Lopes

Want to learn more about the world of illustration as it compares to fine art and graphic design? Narrative Illustration is the class for you!

Over the course of four classes, students will be tasked with creating an illustration or series of images, in the medium of their choice, that tells a story using only imagery. A great class to explore storytelling, composition and illustration.

This class also provides an opportunity for students to use the new Huion drawing tablets in the digital lab if they’re interested! The only requirements for students is to be passionate about drawing and have an interest in crafting stories. 1016. Making Digital Comics for Teens Workshop Learn techniques for planning and creating comics digitally. Familiarize yourself with Adobe Photoshop as well as digital tablets for illustration. Learn about different formats for comics and platforms for publishing them. Then learn of the positives and negatives for different file types, printing methods, and lettering techniques. Drawing Anime & Manga 101 Workshop Begin with an introduction to the Anime and Manga style. Learn about designing a character, how to draw in a distinctive manga style and begin to conceptualize a story for a character. Then focus on placing characters within a manga page or panel, storyboarding and thumbnailing, sketching the scene, and inking the artwork in the traditional manga style. At the end, you’ll have a physical inked piece of artwork that can be scanned into the computer for digital editing and the tools to continue future manga creation. Students need basic drawing skills and an interest in the manga style.

SOFTWARE & WEB DESIGN FOR ARTISTS 100. Introduction to Adobe Illustrator Adobe Illustrator is one of the most flexible design programs out there for anything from logo design to Vector illustration.

This class covers the benefits of working in vector, as well as some of Adobe Illustrator’s most powerful abilities such as the pen tool, creating shapes, and working with points to create clean, beautiful designs. You’ll leave the class with a better understanding of design, working in Illustrator, and how to make your ideas into actual design pieces. Supplies: Sketchbook/pencils/pens suggested. Make Your Own Magazine: Getting Started With Adobe InDesign - Workshop Have you ever wanted to create your own magazine, artist portfolio, or booklet? This beginner InDesign class will get you started laying out pages with text and graphics. You’ll learn the fundamentals to integrate text, pictures, and pages, as well as working with typography and colors. Students will first create a sample magazine layout using provided images/text and then will be able to create a custom project using their own images/ text. Students should bring a flash drive containing all of the images, text, and other content they would like to use for their custom project. A basic knowledge of computers and image editing is helpful, but not required to take this course.

Enjoy the new Intro to Vitual Reality Illustration Workshop 1060. From Photoshoot to Photoshop Workshop An introductory course into photoshop compositing.

Starting with how to light your subjects for composite use and image manipulation for digital artwork.

In this course you will explore how to use basic photoshop tools to cut out your subject and apply a new background, explore layers and commonly used blending modes for color and light matching and bringing it all together with the use of textures and color. A basic knowledge of Photoshop and the tool panel as well as a basic understanding of photography lighting. Students may bring their own Wacom tablet or use the Sawtooth’s Huion drawing monitors.

NEW! 105. Experimental Collage Techniques Workshop Learn experimental collage techniques using additive and subtractive paper methods, digital photocopying, and digital editing. Design collages with found paper materials and create decollages by cutting or tearing away layers. In the final class, learn how to scan in collages to create a digital image which can be manipulated even further using the computer. Materials are provided but please bring any papers or magazines you like for collage. Come ready to explore, experiment, and play! No experience necessary.

Girls and Production (GAP) at Sawtooth GAP’s mission is to equip young women who possess a passion for filmmaking with the awareness, skills and confidence they need to compete in a male-dominated industry. During this 11-week course, students will meet on Wednesdays between 4-6pm in the Sawtooth’s Digital Arts studio to learn filmmaking concepts such as shot composition, camera movement, script writing, and nonlinear editing techniques. Students will write, direct and shoot their own three-minute short film using iPhones and minimal equipment with the help of their peers. Final films will be edited by the students and screened at a/perture cinema. New students must apply via our online application at Sawtooth.org. Once accepted, they will be emailed with registration information. Returning students (students who have participated in a/perture’s Girls and Screen program this past fall or those that participated in our pilot program in 2018) are eligible for the spring portion of GAP. DR AWING+PAINTING 333. Landscape Made Simple Workshop In this hands-on workshop Viktoria will demonstrate ways of approaching painting in the studio from photos or studies. This will be a paint-along class with individual attention to each student. Viktoria will bring in a plein air landscape study and demonstrate the effective methods she employs to transform it into a larger scale studio painting. The students will be able to bring in an own reference material- a landscape study or a high quality 8x10 inch landscape photo and turn it into a beautiful landscape painting or use the study material provided by Viktoria. It will be re-composed for maximum impact and transformed into a complete landscape painting. The focus of this class will be on composition, drawing, value and color. This is an all-level workshop demonstrated in oil but, you have the option to bring & use your own acrylic paints if you wish.

PAINTING 452.Introduction to Acrylic Painting This class is for beginners. Artist Craig Richards teaches the fundamentals of the acrylic medium and painting through an easy 5 step process called, “The Hand.” Students will find encouragement, friendship and the joy of painting. Acrylic paints and supplies provided.

Independent Study for the Visual Artist The advanced independent study course is designed to help students start and finish one major project in the course of 8 weeks. The course will be dictated by your interests and specific project goals. Students will arrive ready to discuss 2-3 possible project concepts, and will pick one at the end of our first session. The instructor will act as your guide as you refine your skills, discover new techniques, and complete a major project over the course of 8 weeks. Each week will be dedicated to studio time, meeting with your mentor, and spending time developing your concept and working on your project. Project examples might include anything related to the visual arts. For example, students might choose to develop a painting series, an illustrated book, a short film, etc.

Getting to the Essential - A Pathway To Abstraction Through Landscape - Workshop In this class, we will learn how to distill what we see to its essential elements and translate this experience with paint. Using the landscape as our muse, we’ll learn how to create dynamic compositions, how to find (and lose!) edges and refine our sense of color. We’ll work from reference photos to learn how to use photography as a jumping off point to make a painting rather than making a copy of a photo. (The instructor will project photos for the whole class to work from together.) You’ll develop skills that you can apply to plein-air and studio painting.

For effective learning, it is required that students have previous drawing and painting experience. Students will need to bring their own oil painting supplies and panels or canvases on which to paint. A supply list will be sent to students beforehand.

4520. Studying the Masters: John Singer Sargent at Reynolda House - Workshop Students will explore the painting methods of the 20th Century master, John Singer Sargent. Students will make studies of John Singer Sargent’s painting “Marchesa Laura Spinola Nunez del Castillo” at Reynolda House and through the exploration of Sargent’s style gain essential tools, a robust color palette, measuring, and depicting 3-dimensionality.

At Sawtooth students will complete between 3 and 4 oil portraits, and are always invited to explore their own methods and style.

4031. Colored Pencil Workshop (16 to Adult) Colored pencils are a surprisingly flexible, rich, and professional medium; they are not just for kids and coloring books! This workshop will first introduce you to the basics of handling colored pencils; how to mix your own colors using only 5 pencils (so that you don’t need that expensive set of 120!), how to choose the right paper for your project, what the color wheel means to your colored pencil work, and how to draw one fruit.

514. Lost Wax Casting Learn to carve hard wax and model with soft waxes to create rings, pendants and more that will be cast in sterling silver or bronze. WORKSHOPS NEW! 5131. Galvanic Etching Workshop Learn how to use electricity to etch copper, nu-gold, silver and mild steel. Galvanic etching is a process redeveloped by Andrea Kennington as she spent years experimenting with the techniques. She has been utilizing it in her work since 2004 and has been doing etching of metal since 1976 with traditional methods.

Advantages of galv-etch over acids are many, and resist options are plentiful. Safely etch light to deep images and explore the possibilities of etched metal.

VISITING ARTIST Christopher Darway 5135. Steam Casting in the 21st Century

Low tech in execution but sophisticated in theory steam casting is a fun way to do lost wax casting without much equipment. There are several methods to cast metal.

Gravity works if metal mass is heavy enough. Centrifugal casting is used for small amounts of metal. Vacuum casting pulls the molten metal into the mold. Pressure casting includes both compressed air or steam to push the metal into the mold. The flask is both mold, melting crucible and steam generator. To make this work the sprue cannot be larger than 14g or else molten metal can drip into the mold. Once the metal is melted in the “button/crucible ” area of the flask a jar cap with wetted paper attached to a wooden handle is pressed against the hot mold and melted metal. The heat of the mold and melted metal produces steam which forces the metal into the mold. That’s it! Students will carve hard wax for rings and we’ll make hot glue gun rings.

Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in New Jersey he received a BFA in craft design from the Philadelphia College of Art. Over the years he has sold and exhibited work through galleries, shops and craft shows including ACC and Smithsonian Craft Shows. He is a two-time recipient of the New Jersey State Council of the Arts Award. Work has been exhibited in Germany, Japan (International Pearl Design Contest, prize winner) and England. He has taught at the University of the Arts, University of Delaware, and Montclair State University, NJ. He’s been a senior PMC instructor for Rio Grande, former president of the Pennsylvania Society of Goldsmiths, and writer at Art Jewelry Magazine. He currently teaches at the Wayne Art Center, Wayne, PA and the University of the Arts, Continuing Studies Program, Philadelphia, PA.

623.The Art of Photographing the Human Form This class explores the human form in photography, using light, shadow, posing and other techniques to show the beauty of the human body. Since communication is key when photographing models, we will learn the proper etiquette for working with your subjects and other photographers in a group setting. This class will teach students the basics of lighting, posing and working with models until the class is prepared to work with fully nude models. Learn how to direct your model, common posing mistakes to watch for, basic lighting set ups, how to use lighting to elevate your images, how lens choice and camera angles can change your images, and how to use props and creative concepts to create new work. VISITING ARTIST LAURIE SCHORR NEW! 6961. Holga and Lomography Workshop: The Poetry of Imperfection Visiting Artist Laurie Schorr is the Director of Education at the Light Factory in Charlotte. She is coming to Sawtooth for two Saturdays to share the creative freedom in making images with Holga and Lomo cameras. These low-tech plastic cameras (with plastic lenses!) are known for their dreamy, nostalgic imagery and the element of surprise in each frame due to lack of total technical control! Each camera has its own imperfections and sculpts light differently. We will be using medium format film for the Holgas and 35mm film for the lomo cameras. With the use of B&W film, we can layer frames in camera, process the film ourselves, and print from our negatives. Negatives can also be scanned and processed digitally. Day one will be an introduction to Holga and Lomography, a photo walk, and processing negatives. Day two we will continue to process negatives, print in the darkroom and scan our negatives. No prior experience is necessary!

680. Troubleshooting Workshop We’ve all experienced them, those pesky problems that come up when we are trying to get the perfect shot. In this class we will discuss some of the most common issues that come up as we try to get the shot: backlit subjects, too much light, too little light, yellow cast on indoor photography, sunsets that don’t turn out how we see them, dealing with bad indoor lighting, using filters, choosing lenses, and more. Students are welcomed to submit their own troubleshooting to discuss with the class. All skill levels. Sharpening for Turners - Workshop There is a direct relationship between sharp tools and quality woodworking, and one of the first skills woodturners need to learn is how to properly sharpen his/her tools. Learn how to use the Wolverine system for low speed dry grinders, and the wet wheel Tormek system to sharpen gouges, parting tools, and skews.

974. Five-board Bench In this class, the young woodworker will gain confidence and skill learning their way around the woodworking studio. Shop safety, fundamental types of joinery, finishing techniques, and more covered in the class. Class project will be a customizable 5 board bench. Middle school students from Carter G. Woodson discovered the power of creating self-portraits in a short photography workshop taught by local artist and teacher Diana Greene. The young women gained the skills to compose and create portraits based on clearly seeing what they see, how they see, and understanding how to translate their vision using a camera. Experiencing the creative process from wonder to exploration to refinement provided students with an opportunity to dig deeper, penetrating beyond the surface of a snapshot.

Registration should be made as soon as possible; class size is limited and spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure enrollment, please register at least one week prior to the start date of the class. Most classes keep waiting lists if the class is full. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled – you will be notified likewise.

PAYMENT: Full payment is due upon registration. Checks, cash and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) are accepted. A $25 fee will be charged for returned checks.

REFUNDS: Registration fees are refundable up until 14 days prior to the start date of the class, minus a $20 accounting fee. Refunds cannot be made after this deadline. To withdraw from a class and request a refund, advise the Sawtooth Registrar by email at registrar@sawtooth.org 14 days or more before the class start date. Failure to attend sessions and/or verbal notification alone will not be considered as an official notice of withdrawal. Refund policy does not apply to special events, symposiums or private group classes.

CREDIT POLICY: Students who notify the Sawtooth Registrar of withdrawal 14 days or more before the class start date may choose a credit for the full amount of the class in lieu of a refund. Credits must be used within 1 year of the original class start date, and cannot be redeemed for cash. Credits can be transferred to another student by notifying the Sawtooth Registrar at registrar@sawtooth.org.

CANCELLATION: Sawtooth reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes and to change class instructors when necessary. If Sawtooth cancels a class for any reason, each registered participant will be informed as soon as possible and will be extended the opportunity to transfer to another class. Any participant who elects not to transfer may choose between a full refund or a credit in the same amount.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Sawtooth School for Visual Art is dedicated to providing quality creative art instruction to a diverse student body. It is through the generosity of individual donors and public foundations that we are able to offer financial assistance to a broader range of students.
