CREDIT POLICY: Students who notify the Sawtooth Registrar of withdrawal 14 days or more before the class start date may choose a credit for the full amount of the class in lieu of a refund. Credits must be used within 1 year of the original class start date, and cannot be redeemed for cash. Credits can be transferred to another student by notifying the Sawtooth Registrar at registrar@sawtooth.org.

Early Registration takes place through 7pm December 16. Register online at sawtooth.org or call (336) 723–7395. Please read all registration and refund policies carefully. Registration should be made as soon as possible; class size is limited and spaces will be filled on a first–come, first–served basis. To ensure enrollment, please register at least one week prior to the start date of the class. You will be notified if the class for which you are registering is full. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled – you will be notified likewise.

Cancellation: Sawtooth reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes to adjust for enrollment, and to change class instructors when necessary. If Sawtooth cancels a class for any reason, each registered participant will be informed as soon as possible and will be extended the opportunity to transfer to another class. Any participant who elects not to transfer may choose between a full refund or a credit in the same amount. Please note that credits must be used within 1 year of the original class start date, and cannot be redeemed for cash.

PAYMENT: Full payment is due upon registration. Checks, cash and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) are accepted. A $25 fee will be charged for returned checks. 219 Exploring Sculptural Forms in Clay This class will provide students an opportunity to explore a variety of handbuilding techniques used to create clay sculpture. Impromptu and formal approaches to sculpting will be incorporated, with human and animal forms used as the primary focus. Demonstrations of various finishing techniques will be included. WORKSHOP 2392. Intro to Silk Screen Image Transfer, part one Using prepared silk screens, experience the process of silk screening a colored ceramic pigment image onto newsprint and transferring that image to a wheel thrown or handbuilt piece of pottery. This process allows you to apply fairly detailed patterns and images to a piece of pottery, which can then be fired with or without a transparent or transluscent glaze over it. Materials included. VISITING ARTIST WORKSHOP 2391. Looking Lively! Altering with Freshly Thrown Clay Demonstration Workshop with Gay Smith Get inspired as you watch Gay work with soft clay to “make pots look like they can jump and dance.” Utilizing techniques she developed, Gay will demonstrate how to shape freshly thrown pots into squares, ovals, triangles, and more; and how to texture surfaces using faceting, fluting, and impressing. Thoughtful attention will be given to attachments, handles and feet, and finishing touches. Sparked by interests and demonstrations, conversations may range from raw glazing/ single firing and soda firing to making a living and making your pots your own. DIGITAL ART & DESIGN 104. The Principals of Design Understand the basic principles that make great design. Cover topics such as layout, typography, color theory, hierarchy and how to implement these to improve design abilities. Work in the Adobe Suite CS6 (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) to experiment with the principles being taught. 1091. Visual Storytelling: The Basics of Video Production Discover the foundations of effective and creative storytelling through moving and/or sequenced images. Learn how to compose a shot, basic approaches to cinematography, story-boarding, and various approaches to video editing using iMovie. Leave the class with two to three short videos and resources to create a basic video for commercial, fiction, or non-fiction purposes. Students should be prepared to work in a shared lab setting and bring their own storage device (external hard drive, or thumb–drive) and camera (videos can be shot on any camera, including phone cameras or iPads). Recommended for teens (16+) or adults with basic computer skills; basic to intermediate photography skills a plus, but not required.

481. Drawing for Beginners and Beyond A drawing course for those who feel they cannot draw but have always wanted to learn, as well as for those who want to learn new approaches to drawing. A variety of mediums will be explored, including pencil, charcoal, and ink. Observational and realistic methods will be taught, along with imaginative experiments with composition. 4001. Figure Drawing from Life: Intermediate Level A four-day intensive large-scale figure drawing class for intermediate level students. 4772. Intro to Drawing – Different Ways of Seeing A course in drawing what you actually see and not what you think you see. This means slowing down and paying attention to every subtle angle, every bump and groove, every shape that is happening. 4997. Winter’s Twigs in Tinted Ink and Watercolor From lichen covered branches to winter tree identifications, winter twigs and their buds are textured, detailed and intriguing to observe and paint. In this workshop, you will learn the technique of tinting ink and combining it with watercolor washes to create realistic botanical studies. WORKSHOP 4332. Right Where You Are! One Day Workshop Unleash your creativity and join writer, Jane Sobie, and mixed-media artist, Patty Pape, in this one-day workshop. We’ll intertwine these two creative arts in a booklet provided for you. Through music, photos, and prompts, Jane will get your creative juices flowing as you Write Where You Are. Patty will take you, Right Where You Are, to create one-of-a-kind pages with your writing and mixed-media techniques, using paint, stencils, spray inks, image transfers, and others. 491. Introduction to Artist’s Books Students will be introduced to image-making techniques such as trace monotype, pochoir, and embroidery. They will also be introduced to simple book structures such as the single sheet book, the french fold, and the accordion. PRINTMAKING

471. Drypoint and Monoprint Students will concentrate on making one of a kind prints using layered inks, found objects, and drawing, painting, or reduction methods on an inked plate. A dry point plate will be made to incorporate a matrix image into the monotype prints. Everything will be done on new PETG plastic plates. Chine colle will be introduced, as well as using textured wood boards. Students may produce a dozen or more different prints! All inks used are non-toxic, water-based Akua inks that can be cleaned up with soap and water. 4116. Screen Printing Workshop Create your own limited-edition artwork on fabric or paper while learning about screen printing. Artist Woodie Anderson walks you through the design and printing process and shows how some of the tools and techniques work. Students will create a nonphotographic stencil and print from a screen using the screen filler negative method - a method you can easily use in your own home using safe, non-toxic materials. WORKSHOPS 3889. Indigo Vat and Shibori Dyeing Workshop Indigo is one of the most vibrant and most used natural dyes throughout history. Students will learn more about the amazing chemistry of indigo, how to start and tend your own indigo fermentation vat. 371. Natural Dyes 101 Create a wonderful array of colors on fibers using natural materials. This class will explore natural dye techniques and different mordants on protein and cellulose fibers. We will use dye plants that you can grow, collect in the area, or purchase. While creating beautiful colors we will discuss why using natural dyes over synthetics is important. Each student will build a swatch book with test and recipes to continue using natural dyes at home. Please bring your own fibers to dye the first day of class. Beginning Tapestry Tapestry is an ancient form of weaving that has been practiced by diverse cultures around the world to make wall hangings as well as functional articles such as rugs, blankets, canopies. It is a weft-faced weave, meaning that the weft, or horizontal threads, completely cover the warp, or vertical threads, and pictures or designs are made by building up areas of different colored wefts, often based on a drawing or cartoon. You will learn several different methods of juxtaposing colors and then design and weave a small tapestry incorporating those techniques. Some supplies will be provided. 4777. Felted Flower Workshop Big, fat luscious flowers are our focus as we wet-felt rich colors of merino wool fibers into exotic 3-dimensional works of art. Embellish with Angelina fibers and lustrous silk threads before felting our wool bead center, a technique that can also be used to create jewelry. Finish with a gently curling vine tendril and add a pin-back so that it can be worn with your favorite sweater, jacket, hat or purse, or used to enhance your newest quilt or creative project. 3770. Table Runner in M’s and O’s Have fun experimenting with the Ms and Os weaving structure to create your own unique table runner. Using a thicker fiber (such as bulky yarn or fabric strips) in the crosswise direction makes the alternating block design POP. 5113. Champleve Enameling Workshop Champleve is an enameling technique in which troughs or cells are etched into the surface of the metal and filled with vitreous enamel. The piece is then fired until the enamel fuses, and when cooled the surface of the object is polished. Learn the process of creating beautiful enameled pieces to use as jewelry. Learn both in class and through take-home assignments about the basic controls of your camera, exposure, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and composition essentials. 659. Digital Photography III – Composition and Expressing your Vision using Photography Expanding on the basic photographic tools and techniques introduced in Digital Photography I & II. 627. Advanced Lightroom This class is intended for those who already have a basic understanding of Adobe Lightroom, or have attended ‘The Digital Photographer’s Workflow using Adobe Lightroom’. During this 6 week class students will delve deeper into Lightroom; using both Mac and PC operating environments, catalog file information, overview of all modules, panels, and drop down menus, common preference setup, customized view including panels, modules, backdrop color, identity plate and splash screen. Importing, exporting, and managing files, keyboard shortcuts, setting up collections, publishing services; culling, flagging, keywording and rating images. Comprehensive tuition of the developing module, including filters, brushes, gradients; saving presets, exporting to Photoshop, special effects and conversions; creating contact sheets and collages, watermarks and identity plates. Master Bowyer Dane Snodgrass will introduce the hand tools and techniques needed to craft such an historic weapon. 570. The Art of Fletching – Making Wood Arrows The traditional art of making arrows has always been highly regarded and the Fletcher has an important place in history. Fletching principles, skills and materials are easily understood. Students will make several arrows in different styles and have the option to create a final project showing their best effort in materials of their choosing. 9716. Sharpening for Turners There is a direct relationship between sharp tools and quality woodworking. This is no less true for those who desire to turn well, and one of the first skills woodturners need to learn is how to properly sharpen his/her tools. Bring your dull tools to this workshop and learn how to sharpen them and keep them sharp. Instruction provided on using the Wolverine system on a high speed grinder, and using a slow speed grinder like the Tormek system. Learn the techniques to sharpen gouges, parting tools, and skews; as well as the different grinds and bevel angles used for turning gouges and why they are used for different types of turning. Photographs Sawtooth School for Visual Art will occasionally document classes and student work using photography and video for promotional purposes only. If you do not wish you or your child photographed, please notify the school in writing. Parking The parking lot across Spruce Street for the Milton Rhodes Center is a self-pay system that takes credit/debit cards and cash but does not give change. The lot is owned and operated by The Arts Council of WSFC. Please be aware that you have other parking options such as at a meter on the street (25 cents per hour) and on numerous other pay surface lots and parking garages within one to two blocks

of the school. On weekends and after 6pm, there is no charge for on–street metered parking. Scholarships The Sawtooth School is dedicated to ensuring access to art instruction to students of all ages, skills, physical abilities, and economic levels. To that end, we offer a limited number of need–based scholarships to deserving youth and adults each session to pay up to half the cost of class tuition. To apply for a scholarship for the upcoming quarter, download the appropriate application from our website and return the completed form to the Sawtooth School. Funds are limited, and awards are made on a first come, first served basis. All applicants will be notified of our decision prior to the beginning of classes. Sawtooth’s Taste of Art Series Spend a fun couple of hours learning something new, meeting new friends, and create a lovely piece of art to take home! No experience necessary. Bring a beverage, bottle of wine, and/or snacks to these laid-back classes. $35 to $55 per person. Fee includes materials.
