membership Sawtooth School for Visual Art is a non-profit community school. We count on our members to support our mission. We ask that you consider becoming a member this year and every year! Annual (12 month) membership term.
My “Love Note” to JoAnne I met JoAnne Vernon when we both joined the Sawtooth staff in June of 2012. We spent the next six months “drinking from a fire hose” as JoAnne often said to learn everything we could about the School. I soon realized that the Sawtooth board could not have chosen a better leader for this organization. The School faced significant challenges when JoAnne took the helm as Executive Director, but she was undaunted. She quickly developed a strategic plan, began cultivating relationships with donors and funders, assembled a supportive and knowledgeable staff, and started making Sawtooth a better place day by day. Fueled by her burning passion for visual art and her undying love for Sawtooth, JoAnne established aggressive goals that she invariably met and often exceeded. She held herself and others to a high standard. She not only led us, she inspired us. Along with the rest of the staff, I discovered that JoAnne was more than just a good boss. She was – and continues to be — a truly good person and a dear friend. Sawtooth has continuously improved over the last four years because she pushed us all to think bigger and do better. When JoAnne stepped down at the end of the year due to health reasons, I moved from Assistant Executive Director to Interim Executive Director. Believe me when I say no one misses her more than I do! The Sawtooth Board is currently searching for a full-time Executive Director, and hopes to have that person in place sometime this spring. (Knowing my own strengths and weaknesses, I respectfully declined to throw my hat in the ring for this position.)

WORKSHOP 2384. Mason Stains, Colored Slips and Underglazes Confused about how and at what stage to use various decorating materials? This is an opportunity to unlock some of the mystery and expand your decorating vocabulary. Students will learn the properties of various materials and how they can be used in combination with glazes to add variety to your work. 2315. Raku Workshop Enjoy the fun of raku firing with its lively colors, crackled glazes, metallic finishes and rich black clay surfaces. Experience the immediate gratification of pulling your red hot pieces out of the kiln and seeing the finished glaze results in fifteen minutes. Experiment with numerous glazing options. Firing space is limited. You may bring three bisque pieces no taller than 9” and no wider than 5”. 2394. Splish, Splash, I’m Making a Birdbath! Treat your feathered friends to a cool summer respite by making a small handbuilt birdbath for your yard. Create the pedestal and bowl using the slab technique, incorporating pattern and texture for an interesting surface. Sculptural additions of birds, bugs, critters, etc. can be added. VISITING ARTIST 2393. Demonstration Workshop with Steve Kelly Get inspired as you watch Steve demonstrate a variety of techniques from throwing, faceting, and altering pots; to trimming, assembling and decorating surfaces. According to Steve, “I try to manipulate the clay at each stage in the drying process, because the clay gives you something unique at each point along the way.” In a hands on portion of the workshop, you can explore one of Steve’s signature techniques, a surface etching process he developed himself. Expect to gain new insight on the throwing process while engaging in conversation about balance, form, and texture. 400. Intro to Figure Drawing from Life A four-day intensive large-scale figure drawing class for intermediate level students. The class will build on the methods introduced in the introductory level figure drawing class; gesture and long poses will be used to further the student’s experience and understanding of relating the observed figure to large-scale (3 ft. x 4 ft) drawings, using charcoal sanguine and Conté crayons. 408. Botanicals in the Growing Season The fascinating world of botanical art is one where art and science meet. Learn the techniques used by botanical artists to realistically depict plant life in watercolors as well as the artist. Activities include developing drawing accuracy while working from live plants in currently in season, color matching, watercolor techniques such as controlled washes and dry brush used for creating realistic images. Drawing for Beginners and Beyond A drawing course for those who feel they cannot draw but have always wanted to learn, as well as for those who want to practice or learn new approaches to drawing. A variety of mediums will be explored, including pencil, charcoal, and ink. Observational and realistic methods will be taught, along with imaginative experiments with composition. Beginning and Intermediate Watercolor Learn a variety of European techniques to mix and mingle colors on a wetted surface in order to create deep, rich and vibrant colors unmatched by other mediums. 444. Calligraphy A common sense approach to calligraphy. Introducing a variety of tools and acknowledging the power of pattern. We will take a close look at the 15th century italic hand in pursuit of a method of study a way of seeing. Combining stroke, repetition, rhythm and texture, we will build our relationships and work with families of letters. WORKSHOPS 4333. Landscape Made Simple - Workshop In this hands-on workshop Viktoria will demonstrate ways of approaching painting in the studio from photos or studies. This will be a paint-along class with individual attention to each student. Viktoria will bring in a plein air landscape study and demonstrate the effective methods she employs to transform it into a larger scale studio painting. The students will be able to bring in reference material - a landscape study or a high quality 8”x10” landscape photo and turn it into a beautiful painting or use the study material provided by Viktoria. It will be re-composed for maximum impact and transformed into a complete landscape painting. The focus of this class will be on composition, drawing, value and color. This is an all-level workshop demonstrated in oil but you may bring your own acrylic paints if you wish. Visiting Artist
4119. Oil Sketch from the Life Model Often used as a preliminary study, the poster study (or oil sketch) is a simplified interpretation of a subject. Using poster studies, participants will explore compositional design and color relationships; the “Big Picture” of painting. By limiting our investigations to the large shapes and masses, and subordinating details, we can more easily examine issues of color, light and design as distinct from other aspects of picture making; particularly those associated with drawing. Practicing the poster study will provide the student with a practical, hands-on approach to understanding the essential elements of a subject. Each three-hour session participants will develop a new piece while working from the life model. Topics to be considered include composition, color analysis and theory, the tone and key of color relationships and paint handling. Various color palettes and technical issues regarding the painter’s materials will also be considered. This class is suitable for the beginning, intermediate and advanced student of oil painting. He continued his studies in DŸsseldorf, Germany and in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In pursuit of the mastery of his craft, he attended the Gage Academy of Art (formerly the Seattle Academy of Realist Art). In January of 2001 Raynolds moved to New York to study at the Water Street Atelier and at Studio 126. Nick has taught at Penland School of Crafts, among other venues.

4888. Travel Journal/Sketchbook Workshop There’s no better way to document or remember a special trip than to write or sketch about it. This class will take away the intimidating aspects of keeping a travel journal or sketchbook and offer methods and techniques for making it your “own.” Pencil, pen, watercolor and photographs will be used. 4242. Successful Color Mixing Workshop Color plays a very important role in painting, it brings out the emotional response to what we see. Each student will learn how to mix and control color by using only the three primary colors and white. Students will also learn how to use the color wheel successfully, including the steps of mixing a whole range of landscape and skin tone colors. Color charts will be created for future reference. 40111. Text, Image, and Chance Operations Students will play with text, image, and games of chance to create series of small books or prints. We will use prompts, the newspaper, a typewriter, and various printmaking techniques to create unexpected artwork. 406. Introduction to Printmaking This introductory class will cover multiple printmaking techniques, including intaglio, relief, monoprint and embossing, while covering supplies and studio practice. Two of our printmaking instructors will be teaching the fourweek course, giving students a sampling of our printmaking practices and instruction, in one class. 4022. Linoleum Block Printing Learn basic techniques of relief printing on linoleum blocks, using water-soluble inks and gelatin on fine rag paper. Linoleum block is easy to cut and easy to capture a range of designs from very simple to very complex. Projects include single color prints and multi-color reductive prints. All levels encouraged. 4991. Gelatin Printmaking Workshop This class will be using “gelatin” plates to print on without the use of a press. Rolling on ink with brayers, we lay down pre-cut silhouette images as well as other flat items for a variety of impressions. This form of printmaking is conducive to “happy accidents” and playful combinations. Water soluble inks are used for easy clean up. We will be able to produce several layers on one piece of paper for more complex compositions! 4116. Screen Printing Workshop Create your own limited-edition artwork on fabric or paper while learning about screen printing. Artist Woodie Anderson walks you through the design and printing process and shows how some of the tools and techniques work. Students will create a nonphotographic stencil and print from a screen using the screen filler negative method–a method you can easily use in your own home using safe, non-toxic materials. Bring a t-shirt or pillowcase to print on, if you’d like. Printmaking is a wonderful art form that is accessible to all levels. We will talk about the difference between “original” and “reproduction” and how you can tell the difference. In addition to talking about and looking at prints, we will make marks and print them in order to illuminate for you the mysteries of the printed image…Try your hand at turning the press or wiping the plate. 483. Woodcuts In this four-week class we will learn to utilize the natural grain of wood boards to enhance the printed image. Edition of prints will be made using reduction and/or multiple board methods. Students will take home wood boards and cutting tools to carve the boards and return to class to ink the boards and pull prints. 371. Natural Dyes 101 Create a wonderful array of colors on fibers using natural materials. Explore natural dye techniques and different mordants on protein and cellulose fibers. Use dye plants that you can grow, collect in the area, or purchase. Build a swatch book with test and recipes to continue using natural dyes at home. 4777. Felted Flower Workshop Big, fat luscious flowers are our focus as we wet-felt rich colors of merino wool fibers into exotic 3-dimensional works of art. Embellish with Angelina fibers and lustrous silk threads before felting our wool bead center, a technique that can also be used to create jewelry. Finish with a gently curling vine tendril and add a pin-back so that it can be worn with your favorite sweater, jacket, hat or purse, or used to enhance your newest quilt or creative project. Basse Taille Enameled Earrings Workshop French for “low cut,” in this enameling technique a pattern is created on the metal surface before enameling, so that when the transparent enamel is laid over it the pattern shines through the glass. Visiting Artist Lisel Crowley: Cuffs and Rings in Sterling Silver Metal Clay One of the most exciting new developments in metal clay, sterling silver clays offer wonderful new possibilities to metal clay artists. The added finished strength and the ability to form items such as rings and cuffs flat and shape after firing allows for more creative freedom and flowing designs. During this two-day workshop, Lisel will introduce you to best practices for working with the sterling clay. She will cover forming, firing and finishing and help you create your unique designs from start to finish. 5343. Tiny Boxes with Andrea Harvin-Kennington This 3-day workshop is an investigation into the making of tiny containers. For thousands of years humans have incorporated small containers into their lives as tokens, spiritual pathways, sculpture, idols, and practical storage of things. Learn the ins and outs of design, elements and fabrication of miniature boxes in non-ferrous metals. This workshop will incorporate many techniques to create small intimate containers. Traditional forms (square, round) as well as micro shell forms will be demonstrated. Many surface texturing styles will be incorporated as well as mechanisms for closures. An Introduction to Darkroom Photography Without a doubt, learning darkroom techniques is one of the best ways to improve your photography skills and create a photographic legacy for your family. Whether you are a beginner, old pro, or looking to reconnect with your darkroom roots, this class is for you. Landscape and Nature: The Backcountry Photographer’s Toolbox The very best landscape photographs are taken by the photographer who has spent some time building three distinct areas of expertise. The first class will examine the mindset of the photographer; a mindset that is open to visualization before reaching for any camera or equipment. This is the ‘eye of the photographer’. The second class looks at the photographic skills necessary for making an extraordinary photograph. The third class will focus on preparation. This includes equipment selection for both photography and safe travel in the backcountry, scouting, and an introduction to the outdoor skills of navigation and survival. During this class, students are encouraged to begin planning their own backcountry photographic expedition. In the final class we put everything together to make the expedition a reality. This class is aimed at photographers who already know their camera, and are comfortable with the syllabus taught in Digital Photography I or above. 6122. Photo Expedition with Julian Charles This spring we continue our series of photographic expeditions with a 2-night trip into the mountains of western North Carolina. The expedition is aimed at those who are familiar with their cameras and are able to hike short to moderate trails in the backcountry. From our lodge accommodation, we have close access to nature trails, an observation deck and further backcountry opportunities nearby. Landscape and nature photography instruction with backcountry guiding provided. Workshops during the ‘golden hour’ will be available Saturday morning, evening, and Sunday morning, weather permitting. 593. Introduction to Bowl Turning Explore the art of bowl turning! Covered are the use of a scroll chuck for mounting and reverse mounting a wood blank to complete a bowl, the techniques involved in using a gouge on the interior and exterior of a bowl, and finishing on the lathe. Bow An Asian Horse Bow is a type of recurved composite bow used in Mongolia and other Asian cultures. 9716. Sharpening for Turners There is a direct relationship between sharp tools and quality woodworking. This is no less true for those who desire to turn well, and one of the first skills woodturners need to learn is how to properly sharpen his/her tools. Bring your dull tools to this workshop and learn how to sharpen them and keep them sharp. Instruction provided on using the Wolverine system on a high speed grinder, and using a slow speed grinder like the Tormek system. Learn the techniques to sharpen gouges, parting tools, and skews; as well as the different grinds and bevel angles used for turning gouges and why they are used for different types of turning. Sawtooth is proud to offer specialty art camps for our teen students. These studios provide hands-on learning experiences that encourage individual creative exploration in an intimate collaborative learning environment.
Our Summer Arts Immersion program is one the finest visual art experiences for teens in North Carolina. Bringing talented rising 9th-12th grade art students together with professional artists and art educators, we offer exceptionally creative and high quality art studio classes tailored for students with a passion for visual arts. Small class sizes combined with tailored instruction offers students the ability to explore an art form appropriate for the novice or for those with some experience.
Studio camps run the weeks of June 26th through August 11th from 9am - 12noon and 1pm - 4pm as one-week, half-day classess. Students may sign up for multiple classes to receive a multiple class discount. This is an excellent opportunity for students to explore new art forms or enhance the ones they have interest in. We encourage repetition of these studio classes as projects, teachers and learning experiences change each summer. Studio Offerings: Digital Photography, Digital Art, Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, Wood, Metals/Jewelry, Printmaking, Comics/Cartooning, Animation, Fiber Arts/Sewing, Glass, and more. Amalgamated Transmutations: Sanctuary and Safekeeping
Sawtooth Photo League
Artists Nicole Uzzell, Millicent Greason and Woodie Anderson present new work examining spaces where comfort, safety and authenticity can be found. The third in their collaborative series, this exhibit will include three large-scale installation pieces built onsite, inviting visitors to contemplate their own feelings of safety and belonging.
Enjoy selected works created by members of the Sawtooth Photo League. The League offers a chance for Sawtooth photo students and instructors to meet and stay connected once class is over. The group participates in multiple activities including movie nights and photo walks.

Sawtooth is also proud to present the award winning entries from Speedball’s New Impressions National Printmaking Competition as part of this exhibition.

In her oil and acrylic paintings, Jessica Singerman uses color, shape and line to explore the connection between the landscape, maps, and memory. In her finished paintings, she looks for a sense of history to the layers of paint, and a balance of awkward and delicate.

registration Early Registration takes place through 7pm March 17. Register online at sawtooth.org or call (336) 723–7395. Please read all registration and refund policies carefully. Registration should be made as soon as possible; class size is limited and spaces will be filled on a first-come, firstserved basis. To ensure enrollment, please register at least one week prior to the start date of the class. You will be notified if the class for which you are registering is full. Classes with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled – you will be notified likewise. PAYMENT: Full payment is due upon registration. Checks, cash and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) are accepted. A $25 fee will be charged for returned checks. ON OUR SECURE WEBSITE: Go to sawtooth.org and browse all our class listings. When you find the one you’d like to take, simply click on “register now” and you’ll be guided through the online registration process. BY MAIL: Send a check or money order for the full amount of the tuition with the registration form, available in our catalog on page 27. For credit card payments, please fill in the complete charge card number, expiration date, v-code and the cardholder’s name on the registration form. Our mailing address is: SSVA Registrations, 251 N. Spruce St., Winston–Salem, NC 27101. IN PERSON: Office hours are 9:00 am to 6:30 pm, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday. Fees may be paid using check, charge card or cash. BY PHONE: Registrations with credit card payments may be made by phone. Call SSVA (723–7395) with class information, charge card number, expiration date, v-code and cardholder’s name. REFUNDS: Registration fees are refundable up until 14 days prior to the start date of the class, less a $20 accounting fee. Refunds cannot be made after this deadline. To withdraw from a class and request a refund, advise the Sawtooth Registrar by email at registrar@sawtooth.org 14 days or more before the class start date. Failure to attend sessions and/or verbal notification alone will not be considered as an official notice of withdrawal. Refund
policy does not apply to special events, symposiums or private group classes. CREDIT POLICY: Students who notify the Sawtooth Registrar of withdrawal 14 days or more before the class start date may choose a credit for the full amount of the class in lieu of a refund. Credits must be used within 1 year of the original class start date, and cannot be redeemed for cash. Credits can be transferred to another student by notifying the Sawtooth Registrar at registrar@sawtooth.org. Cancellation: Sawtooth reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes to adjust for enrollment, and to change class instructors when necessary. If Sawtooth cancels a class for any reason, each registered participant will be informed as soon as possible and will be extended the opportunity to transfer to another class. Any participant who elects not to transfer may choose between a full refund or a credit in the same amount. Please note that credits must be used within 1 year of the original class start date, and cannot be redeemed for cash. SCHOLARSHIPS: Sawtooth offers need-based scholarships for adults and children of all ages. Seniors aged 60 and over may qualify for tuition assistance from the Bealle Family Scholarship Fund. Photographs Sawtooth School for Visual Art will occasionally document classes and student work using photography and video for promotional purposes only. If you do not wish you or your child photographed, please notify the school in writing. Parking The parking lot across Spruce Street for the Milton Rhodes Center is a self-pay system 24/7 that takes credit/debit cards and cash but does not give change. The lot is owned and operated by The Arts Council of WSFC. Please be aware that you have other parking options such as at a meter on the street (25 cents per hour) and on numerous other pay surface lots and parking garages within one to
two blocks of the school. On weekends and after 6:00 pm, there is no charge for on–street metered parking. Scholarships The Sawtooth School is dedicated to ensuring access to art instruction to students of all ages, skills, physical abilities, and economic levels. To that end, we offer a limited number of need–based scholarships to deserving youth and adults each session to pay up to half the cost of class tuition. To apply for a scholarship for the upcoming quarter, download the appropriate application from our website and return the completed form to the Sawtooth School. Funds are limited, and awards are made on a first come, first served basis. All applicants will be notified of our decision prior to the beginning of classes.
