1118. Healing and Horses Unique in their therapeutic nature, horses seek relationship, leadership, trust and respect in equal doses, often transferring those qualities to humans during interactions. Horses allow a person to be aware of all of his or her abilities, emotions and strengths at once. Horses often mirror human emotions through touch, breath, and energy and will allow connection to occur immediately. Just being around horses can change human brainwave patterns and create calm and focus. For the first time, Sawtooth students will have the unique opportunity to work with horses at Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center, combining hands-on time with the horses followed by a personal art experience on the farm. For the first hour, students will work with the horses through the guidance of Laura Pallavicini, program director and certified PATH Intl. instructor and equine specialist. In the second hour, you will have time to create your own personal art based on your experience with the horses. You may choose photography, drawing, writing: whatever method fits best for you to process your experience. In the last 30 minutes you will have time to process the day’s experience with Amanda Sullivan, counselor and Sawtooth’s Healing and Wellness Through the Arts coordinator. Open to all types of healing; no experience with horses required and all horse activities will take place on the ground. All classes will take place at Riverwood. For more information about Riverwood, visit http://www.riverwoodtrc.org/ Instructors Amanda Sullivan and Laura Pallavicini
Class registration fees provide only a portion of the funds required to operate The Sawtooth School. WORKSHOP 9707. Turning Two-Part Hollow Vessels on the Lathe For many woodturners, hollow vessels are the “holy grail.” However, turning hollow vessels may require extensive (and expensive!) equipment. This workshop demonstrates techniques for producing two part hollow forms that are both elegant and delicate – and do not require extra or specialized tools. During the course, two objects will be created to be used as a jumping off point for your creativity. All participants must have turning experience. Completion of Sawtooth’s course 590, “Beginning Lathe Turning”, fulfills this requirement. Lunch and breaks determined in class. Instructor Ross Pfeiffer Location: Wood Studio Early Registration $195 (member $165) Regular Registration $225 (member $195) 2 Fridays 7/17 & 7/24, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
PRIMITIVE WEAPONS 9701. Making Primitive Weapons - Selfbow Some of the oldest primitive weapons discovered have been Neolithic wood bows. Students will have the opportunity to build their own selfbow as the “homework” project. This fundamentals course is considered the first in a sequential skill building program. Students will purchase/provide some materials and tools which will be discussed at the first class session. Class limited to eight students. WORKSHOP 9708. Classic Weapons: The Atlatl As course instructor Dane Snodgrass says, “creating an atlatl – a transitional weapon between the spear and bow and arrow - is a very Neolithic introduction to both woodworking and a classic primitive weapon.” At the end of the workshop, students will have a historically correct, functioning primitive weapon. With a little practice, “they will be able to kill that saber tooth tiger in their backyard.” Atlatl and spear kits for building the weapon are covered in the course fee and provided in class. No woodworking experience required. Class size limited to eight students. Instructor Dane Snodgrass Location: Wood Studio Early Registration $150 (member $120) Regular Registration $180 (member $150) 2 Saturdays, 8/1 & 8/8, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
