Letter from the Vicarage

Hello everyone, As I write this the sun is shining and today is one of those beautiful early autumn days. The sun still warms our backs, and the sky is a wonderful clear blue, reminiscent of summer days. October brings with it the darker nights and cooler weather, and if we’re not careful a focus on the coming winter. However we need to remember that right in the middle of the dark winter is the bright shining light of Christmas! Last month I wrote about the importance of giving thanks and how it can lift our mood. There are times when it can be very difficult to give thanks, for example when water has come rushing into our homes and we have to move out. However, we have a good God who promises those who put their trust in him wonderful blessings. Yes the rain and the flood came but then the sun came out, dried up the land and God set a rainbow in the sky to remind us of his promises. As the children’s song ‘Mister Noah’ says 4 I Saxonwell Group Parish News

“Whenever we see a rainbow remember God is LOVE.” There are many ways in which God expresses his love for us, creating the beautiful world in which we live, providing for our needs with the wonderful abundant harvests and other resources, such as wool for clothing, coal and oil for electricity. In love God sent Jesus to be our friend and Saviour, saving us from the things we have done wrong and showing us another way in which to live, loving others as he loves us. As an expression of loving your neighbour it was great to see the way in which the Long Bennington community came together to help each other and have continued to offer help and support for those affected - one of the many reasons why I really enjoy working in the Saxonwell parishes. With community in mind there are many events coming up over the next few months and we’d love everyone to get involved, so please check out the Dates for your Diary on pages 14 and 15. So come along to the Light Party (also celebrating the end of the Rugby World Cup), donate through the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox appeal (see opposite), and don’t miss out on any of the Christmas festivities. God bless Harriet

Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal A small shoebox can have a big impact. What goes into the box is fun, but what comes out of it is eternal. Be a part of changing children’s lives all over the world in Jesus’ Name through the power of a simple gift with Operation Christmas Child. Get an empty medium-sized shoebox for a girl or a boy wrapping the lid and box separately. Mark the correct age category 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14 and tape a label to the top of your box.
Now fill your box. Be sure to include a ‘wow’ toy such as a doll, ball, harmonica or cuddly toy. Then add other fun toys, hygiene items and school supplies. Here’s some suggestions: Include items that children will immediately embrace such as dolls or stuffed toys (with CE label), toy trucks, yo-yo, skipping rope, ball, small puzzles etc. Pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons or felt pens, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or notebooks and paper, solar calculators, colouring & picture books etc. Toothbrush and toothpaste, bars of wrapped soap, comb or hairbrush, flannel. Hat, cap, gloves or scarf, sunglasses, hair accessories, jewellery set, wind up torch, wrapped sweets (best-before-date must be at least March of the following year). Please do not include: used or damaged items, war related items such as toy guns, play soldiers or knives; chocolate or other food items; liquids or lotions of any type

including bubbles; medicines; hand-made or knitted stuffed toys; anything of a political, racial or religious nature; playing cards (of the 4-suit variety); sharp objects; glass containers, mirrors or fragile items; clothing other than as listed above. Please help cover shipping and other costs by donating £3 for each box you prepare. If you can give online at Follow Your Box you can discover the destination of your box. Or, you can write a cheque to Samaritan’s Purse or enclose cash by placing it in an envelope on top of the items inside your shoebox. If you are preparing multiple gifts, please make one combined donation. Note: Follow Your Box is only available through online giving. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift. You can also include a personal note and photo of yourself or your group. Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox and take it to the Saxonwell Vicarage between 1st – 18th November or you can call 01993 770620. So, spread the love of Jesus and make a child’s Christmas very special this year. Methodist Church News Long Bennington Methodist Chapel The Sunday Service is at 10:30am The Minister: Rev Mark Roberts Chapel Secretary: Mrs E Eggleston Chapel Treasurer: Mr M Gledhill I resisted for a long time, but I am now hooked on the Great British Bake Off. I’d managed to avoid the whole of the first four series, but ended up watching last year’s final when we were staying with my parents. This year I’ve not missed an episode and Wednesday night’s have become Bake Off nights. First we watch as a family, then we decide what we are going to bake over the weekend. Since it’s started we’ve managed a baked cheesecake, strawberry meringue, a couple of cakes and several loaves of bread. I’ve particularly enjoyed the bread. I know there will be some reading this who have years of bread making experience, but it is over 25 years since I last had a go at baking my own. It is amazing what can be achieved with a few simple ingredients. We haven’t perfected our techniques yet, but our flawed attempts still taste far better than any shop bought sliced white loaf. It has also been hugely

01636 706264 01400 281439 01400 282239

satisfying to do all the mixing and kneading and then to watch the dough rise. Left for an hour in a warm place, then if you have got it right, the dough will at least double in size. In Matthew’s gospel Jesus tells us that the kingdom of heaven is like bread making. Mix a handful of yeast in with a large amount of flour and see what happens, he says. In this simple illustration we are reminded that sometimes God’s work can appear unimpressive, like the yeast. Given time, that work becomes a life giving force, which cannot be ignored. I wonder if that illustration has something to say to us? Maybe we need to celebrate a new beginning, even if it currently feels small and unimpressive. Perhaps we need to be reminded that when God gets to work a little can become great. Do we need to have a little bit of patience to allow enough time to let God do his work? Mark

Prayers for October Jesus said: “Love one another” John Ch13 v34 Dearest Father, as we celebrate our Harvest Festival services during this month we praise and thank you for the rich variety of food all around us. We pray for farmers and all who produce good quality food especially those who are finding it hard to make a living in the present economic situation. May we never take our blessings for granted, always being aware of those less fortunate than ourselves, remembering families who need to rely on food banks and charities for extra help and all who live in other countries desperately wanting food, clean water and sanitation. Lord be ever near them. Compassionate Father, our thoughts turn now to those in our own communities who have been affected by the recent flooding, still struggling with the clearing up. May they be aware of your strength supporting them in the weeks ahead and may we ask that your loving presence will surround all who are ill or grieving at this time. prayers the awful plight seen daily on our television screens, of all in refugee camps and of migrant families risking their lives fleeing from war-torn countries. You have made everyone in your own image and given different gifts and talents to each of us. In the sacrificial love of Jesus help us to accept and respect one another and use your gifts and resources together so that everybody can live the quality of life you intended for us and reconciliation, peace and love can be found by all. In the mighty power of our Risen Lord hear these our heartfelt prayers Amen Suzanne Hartle Whilst I find it a great honour to be asked to write your prayer page each month I am also very aware that this is a community magazine and would like everyone to feel free to use this page as an opportunity for prayer requests. I would consider it a privilege to pray with you and for you, so if you would like prayers to be included either for yourself or others, for a place or situation I would love to hear from you. 2015 Flu Campaign

It’s almost autumn and we are just about ready for this year’s flu campaign. We will start immunising patients, who are eligible for the flu vaccine, on Saturday 17 October. All patients aged 65 and over should be immunised and we wish to notify those patients who will be 65 by 31 March 2016 that they should also contact us about having the flu vaccine. Patients aged 6 months to 65 who are in one of the Department of Health ‘at risk’ groups are also eligible for the flu vaccine this year. Further information about who is eligible for the flu vaccine can be found on page 38 of their Flu Plan Winter 2015/16: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/ system/uploads/attachment_data/file/418038/ Flu_Plan_Winter_2015_to_2016.pdf

Patient Participation Group (PPG)

A couple of months ago we met with a few interested patients to discuss our Patient Participation Group (PPG). Minutes from the PPG meeting are now available to read on our website http://www. longbenningtonmedicalcentre.nhs.uk/ppg.aspx. One of the main outcomes from the meeting was about communicating the services we offer and how patients can find out more about what we do. We plan to produce a regular newsletter which we hope will be seen by most of our patients that live in the surrounding 24 villages 8 I Saxonwell Group Parish News

If you have completed a Friends and Family Test recently, you join 10 million other patients who have also done so. On 20 August the NHS announced they have now received 10 million Friends and Family Test responses - this is an impressive number for a service that is only just 2 years old, but what is the Friends and Family test? The NHS Friends and Family Test (FFT) was created to help service providers and commissioners understand whether their patients are happy with the service provided or where improvements are needed. It is a quick and anonymous way for a patient to give their views after receiving care or treatment across the NHS services. You can rate the services provided by your dentist, doctor, hospital department, maternity service, patient transport, emergency or community health care immediately after you have received it. Your patient response is a very important instant measure showing how services are being delivered and enables services to act quickly to make any necessary improvements. So next time you visit us please don’t forget to complete a Friends and Family Test survey which is available on reception whenever you pop into the surgery, or click on ‘Friends & Family Test’ on our website to complete the survey online. There are only two questions to answer and your response is appreciated. You can also give feedback on the NHS Choices website.

New Co-op Store Opens it’s Doors A new £1.2m Lincolnshire Co-op food store opened in Long Bennington on Friday 11 September. The outlet, on Main Road, has created 15 new jobs. To celebrate the store’s first 50 customers shoppers received a free bunch of flowers and there were free pastries and orange juice. The store was opened by Lincolnshire Co-op President Amy Morley and Bob Wall, who is Chairman of Long Bennington Village Hall. Children from the Long Bennington PreSchool also helped to cut the ribbon. The new food store will be open from 7am until 10pm, seven days a week. The 3,000 sq ft store has 21 car parking spaces, an ATM and in-store bakery. Customers of the store will be able to raise money for local good causes through Lincolnshire Coop’s Community Champions scheme. This links dividend card-holders directly to a charity from that area – every time they shop, the group gets a donation. Long Bennington Village Hall is the new food store’s first Community Champion and the group has received an initial donation of £250. A joint venture between Lincolnshire Co-op and

Lindum is currently underway to create The Limes; a housing development of seven executive bungalows on land adjacent to the food store, with only three now remaining for sale.

Long Bennington Parish Council

The Parish Council meeting on 7th September was attended by 12 members of the public, including a reporter from the Grantham Journal. A number of residents shared experiences of the recent flooding in the village and urged the Parish Council to take action. Councillor Wood confirmed he has been in contact with various authorities and investigations are underway into causes and actions required. Councillors agreed that it is vital that the relevant authorities take appropriate action to resolve the issues to prevent this occurring again. It has been agreed that a public meeting is to be arranged, allowing time for some investigations to be carried out and a date for this will be agreed at the next Parish Council meeting on 5th October. Representatives from the various authorities will be invited to be present to answer questions from residents. In the meantime, residents are urged to report personal incidents of flooding to Mark Heaton, Lincolnshire County Council, District Council Offices, Kesteven Street, Sleaford, Lincs NG34 7EF or email LCCHighwaysWest@lincolnshire.gov.uk The date and details of the public meeting will be posted in the Parish Council noticeboard and various places around the village. Councillors agreed to a further spring bulb planting exercise around the village. This is to be part funded by a donation from Cllr Dawkins as a tribute to his late parents. It is planned that daffodil bulbs are to be planted as a continuation of those planted last year at the southern entrance to the village and at a couple of other locations. Snowdrop bulbs are to be planted in the Memorial Garden. This is an ongoing project and any suggestions for areas for future planting will be most welcome.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – there is drop-in session at the village hall on Saturday 3rd

Steffie Shields visited on 25 August to show some of her photos of Capability Brown landscapes - particularly those in Lincolnshire, and to talk about his life and the celebrations which will be taking place at various venues up and down the country next year to celebrate the Capability Brown Ter-centenary. It was fascinating to hear all about how his career developed and Steffie said there was a possible link with the Manor House in Long Bennington.

The Summer Show on 5 September organised by Show Secretary Jackie Claxton was a great success. There were so many entries that extra tables were put out to display them and this was despite the challenges of the Summer weather including the terrible deluge on 24 August. Entries in the fruit and vegetable classes were of superb quality, the flowers and plants attracted high numbers of excellent displays and the children’s section was dominated by a wonderful display of paper plates painted as ladybirds. St Lawrence’s Church, Sedgebrook

Between the 16 and 23 August, a considerable quantity of lead was stolen from the roof of St Lawrence’s in Sedgebrook. The entire north roof area, as well as the ridge of the aisle roof, was stripped and several alarm sensors were either removed or damaged. As a result, recent heavy rains have penetrated the church interior, rendering the organ inoperative, damaging walls and soaking carpet and pew areas. The cost of the damage has yet to be assessed but it will be considerable, given the extent of the roof that needs attention and the damage to the organ. The very limited funds remaining in church accounts will be inadequate and alternative sources of funding are being explored. The lead on the roof had been treated with SmartWater but Lincolnshire Police has commented that this is of little protection, as stolen metals are often packed into containers and shipped overseas almost immediately. Thanks to prompt work by local resident Tim Cullington, the church roof now 16 I Saxonwell Group Parish News

has excellent short term weather protection and is again functioning. We are also grateful to other parishioners, particularly Sybil and Mike Hubbard and Christine Hicks who have pitched in to help thoroughly clean the building and remove the mould caused by water ingress. However it will be some time before the church is fully dried out and the full extent of damage to this Grade 1 listed building can

be assessed. Despite this, we are intending to have refreshments in the church following our Harvest Festival service on Sunday 4 October, which starts at 10.30am, led by Janet Rogers from St Anne’s Church, Grantham, and we shall be collecting produce for the Grantham Food Bank. In the absence of an organ, Bob, our organist from Long Bennington, will bring his keyboard. Please come and support us. John Pike

Nativity Festival at St Peter’s Church On 12 and 13 December residents and groups are invited to display their nativity sets in Foston church. These can be in any format but as they will be on display for two days a live set is not an option! There’s already some great ideas for homemade ones; a mini nativity in a shoebox and ones made from Lego or paper. The church will be open that weekend so please come along and join in this different community celebration of Christmas. There’s a Nativity Celebration Service for the whole family at 4pm on Sunday

13th. The church is looking forward to a real spectacle of special nativities. Contact Rev’d Harriet Orridge on 01400 281281 or Debbie Starr on 01400 282719 for more information.

Long Bennington Twinning Association

LBTA held their AGM on 16 September. The minutes from last year were confirmed as a true record. The Chairman’s report was a resume of a very successful year for the association; there was a Christmas social and an extremely well attended Valentine’s dinner and dance. Fifty-one French friends visited in June. The members took them to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight museum and then on to Woodhall Spa. There was a fun-packed line-dancing evening in the Village Hall. On the Saturday everyone spent the day in Rufford Park and in the evening there was a meal and disco at the Wyndham Garden Hotel. In April there was the annual Brains of Bennington Quiz. There was the election of officers for the coming year. Kim Roberts was elected to remain as

Chairperson, Ian Askew to continue as Treasurer and Amy Barnett to remain as Secretary. Gill Askew, Ros Cherler, Jacob Florijn and Anne Laine were elected to the committee. The committee then discussed their plans for the forthcoming year. On 4 December the association will have a stall in the Village Hall for the lighting of the Christmas tree. On March 18th there will be a black tie St. Patrick’s dinner and dance. From 1 to 5 June members will be visiting Bretteville via Honfluer and Montreuil-sur-Mer, not far from Calais. Anyone interested in going to France please contact Kim Roberts on 01400 283370 or email lbt@email. com. All Twinning events are open to everyone. Anne Laine

Alpine Adventures of a Mamil (Middle Aged Man in Lycra)

John Orridge has just finished an an epic cycle ride in aid of Hope Against Cancer (a Leicester based cancer research charity). Joining rugby legend Martin Johnson and seventy other intrepid riders, John rode from Geneva to Milan over four days at the beginning of September. The route covered 360 miles and had over 25,000ft of climbing. Iconic climbs the Grimsel Pass, the Furka Pass and the San Gotthard Pass were all conquered on one day. The Furka Pass is particularly famous for being used in the James Bond film ‘Goldfinger’.

After the mountains came a long descent towards Milan, which included a stop at Monza and an unexpected opportunity to do a lap around the famous motor racing circuit - almost as fast as Lewis Hamilton!

The grand finish was at the magnificent Duomo Cathedral in Milan. The group is hoping to raise over £160,000 for this fantastic Charity which is undertaking such important work. If you would like to give, please visit John’s fundraising page at http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ JohnOrridge1, or visit Hope’s website (www.hfcr.org). They’ll be looking for more volunteers for the next challenge in two years. Time to start training! 26 I Saxonwell Group Parish News

On 1 September LBWI met for their first meeting after the summer break. The speaker was Mary Elmer who gave a talk entitled ‘From fleece to finish’. She demonstrated how she began with a fleece, combed the wool, spun it with a drop spindle or a spinning wheel and then either knitted or wove the yarn into finished garments. She made it all look so easy. Her finished items were much admired. On 3 September members and friends went to Harrogate to the Centennial Fair organised by the National Federation of

Foston WI

Women’s Institutes. It covered a wide range of interests ranging through cookery, craft, home and gardening. The next meeting will be on 6 October when Irene Roddam will give a talk on ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) an organisation working on aid projects in various areas of the world. Do come and join in at 7.30pm in St. James’s Hall. Jean Higgs For details of membership contact Jeanne Day on 01400 282873.

Foston’s Neighbourhood Development Plan Foston has been working on its Neighbourhood Plan for the past couple of years and it has now reached a key milestone. A formal consultation period has now been launched which is the beginning of the formal submission of the Plan and its associated documents. All information is available from the website:

www.fostonvillage.org.uk (select the Neighbourhood Development Plan section) or can be requested from the Chair to Foston Parish Council, Christina Lees: (cmlees@btopenworld.com). Additionally the documents will be available for viewing at many village events (full details on the website). The consultation period remains open until 4 November 2015 – do feedback any comments you have by this time.

Foston Book Club An autumn chill seemed to have set in for the September meeting, and it almost reflected the group’s view of the books. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee was enjoyed by all. It was agreed you had to go back to that time to understand the full impact of reading through a child’s eyes, something we do quite often now. However the second book Elizabeth is Missing by Emily Healey received very mixed views. One thing was agreed on; it is very difficult to know if this is a true reflection of dementia.

The choice for October is The Hundred Year Man who Climbed out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. This is quite a different book to recent reads but is said to have you laughing out loud! The club meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 8pm and the next meeting is 20 October. The club welcomes all newcomers. Contact Lucy on rnj.bliss@btinternet.com or 01400 282661 for more details.
