Letter from the Vicarage
Hello everyone, Christmas adverts are now showing on a TV set near you. The advertisers have come up with a wide range of ideas to entice us into buying things at Christmas. To know that we are loved and cared about by others far away, is a wonderful thought, as in the John Lewis “Man on the Moon” advert. Whereas Burberry have paid homage to 15years of Billy Elliot in their advert. Others have drawn inspiration this year from children’s books such as Sainsbury’s Mog the Cat advert. Mog accidentally wreaks the family home on Christmas morning, burning the turkey, destroying the tree. However the neighbours joining in the festive Spirit share their Christmas saying “If the Thomas’ and Mog can’t have a Christmas, they can share ours.”. The final scene is of the whole community coming together to celebrate, sharing their dinner together. Mog even gets an egg! The penultimate line “In fact there was no Christmas at all” suggests that Christmas is only about the celebration, the Christmas
tree, with it’s lights, and presents, and of course the sumptuous dinner of turkey and all the trimmings. Out of all the adverts this year the one that has struck me the most is the Mulberry advert. Which, if you haven’t seen it, you can find at http://www.harpersbazaar. co.uk/culture-news/staying-in/the-bestchristmas-adverts-2015 It opens with a couple in front of a fire, surrounded by packing boxes. The man gets up and retrieves a box and presents it to the lady saying “I know we weren’t going to do presents but…”. Upon opening she exclaims “it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life”. Immediately shepherds arrive and admire the gift, followed by three men (apologising for being late - saying the traffic was a nightmare, and bearing gifts). As they look on at the present they proclaim it is “A thing of wonder” and “Quite stupendous”. The thing they are all admiring … a red handbag! On the 2nd weekend of December Foston church is hosting a Nativity Festival. Various people have very kindly lent or made nativity scenes. However I suspect most people would be horrified if instead of baby Jesus they discovered a Red Handbag in the manger (especially one costing £900). But the advert niggles at me, making me think about what I/we replace Jesus with? However you celebrate Christmas this year, I hope that the holiday will be full of joy and peace. Yours in Christ Harriet Saxonwell Group Parish News I 5
Remembrance Sunday Thank you to everyone who came to pay their respects to all those who gave their lives so that we can live in freedom. In Long Bennington Ted Gascogne lead the service in the Methodist Chapel, and Phil Owen lead the Act of Remembrance by the Memorial, with Victoria once again playing the “Last Post” and Reveille. The Brownies started prayers adding pinwheel poppies, as we prayed for all those affected by war, asking for God’s peace to be with them. In Foston the Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts paraded their flags for a special All Age service lead by Debbie Starr, who talked about using our hands to talk, and in particular how we use our hands to reach out in peace, and make friends. In Allington John Swallow lead the “Act of Remembrance “ at a special morning prayer service, giving double thanks as all their service men returned home from both World Wars. Over at Sedgebrook Rev’d John Bruce took the service reading out a special poem written by Bob Tufnell based upon the two minute silence.

A bugle sounds, then silence holds sway, Quiet we stand, our respects to pay, We think of peace, hard won by dying, The lives long lost, their hopes denying, A minute gone, we yet stand still mute, One minute more, of our deep tribute, Reveille sounds, as Earth keeps turning, At sundown then, and in the morning, We will - we will remember them.
Across the four parishes approximately £400 was raised for the work of the Royal British Legion.

Methodist Church News Long Bennington Methodist Chapel The Sunday Service is at 10:30am The Minister: Rev Mark Roberts Chapel Secretary: Mrs E Eggleston Chapel Treasurer: Mr M Gledhill I had to meet someone in Costa coffee in early November. As I went in I saw that the Christmas menu was already on offer. It was far too early for me to feel even a tingle of the Christmas mood, even with the flashing Christmas tree to help. I chose a plain coffee instead of a gingerbread and cream latte or a salted caramel cappuccino. The next day I found out that from a health point of view this had been a wise choice. An article in the Daily Mail revealed the sugar content of various festive drinks. If I’d gone for big Caramel Fudge Hot Chocolate in Costa then it would have contained nearly 700 calories and 100g, over three ounces, of sugar (in the interests of balance I should also note that another review also said it is ‘sooooo good and the best hot chocolate we’ve had’). Christmas in Costa, and in shops in general, begins early, but it also finishes early. By the beginning of January I expect that the gingerbread lattes and Caramel Fudge Hot Chocolates will be a sweet memory and the menu will have

moved on. The only evidence that they existed might be a couple of extra pounds on the scales for those who drank them. But Christmas has the potential to last a lot longer than this. In our churches this Christmas we will be telling again the strange, but familiar story of a child, born to a young mother in a stable, attended by shepherds and exotic travellers. It’s a good story, but it too could be forgotten for the rest of the year if it were not for the fact that the child in the manger is God’s son. That changes everything, for God has come to live among us through the birth of Jesus. He is working in our world and because of this, hope, joy and peace have been offered to all. When we allow this to really touch our hearts then nothing will be the same again. So do come and join us for all or any of our services in December, and let your heart be touched by Christmas. Our special services are the Carol Service on Sunday 6th December at 3pm and Sunday 20th December at 10.30am which is a Christmas communion with carols. Mark
Prayers for Christmas and the New Year “A virgin will become pregnant and have a son and he will be called Immanuel” which means ‘God is with us’ Matthew Chapter 1 verse 23 Immanuel - God is with us - Oh Heavenly Father what a comfort and joy the name Immanuel brings. You came to this, your created world, through the birth of the baby Jesus Christ, to dwell with your created people. As the angels announced to the shepherds not only a baby but a Saviour our precious Saviour. What a real cause for celebration this Christmas having you here with us – Hallelujah! Lord for some this Christmas will bring a quiet sadness, maybe facing their first Christmas without a loved one, or sick and in pain, families whose relationships have broken down and all who will be alone. Some are victims of violence, conflict or war, the unemployed, homeless or displaced. Our prayer for them is that they may each experience their own Immanuel and be comforted knowing you are there for them. We thank you Father for the year that is now coming to a close and ask you to help us to continue hearing the word Immanuel
ringing in our ears and hearts as we enter the unknown future of the New Year. Believing your promise to be with us, may we follow you, committed to serving you and caring for one another in love and peace. We ask these prayers through the innocence of the child in the manger, the vulnerability of the man on the cross and in the power of our risen Saviour. Amen Suzanne Hartle I would like to wish you all a very blessed Christmas and a peaceful New Year Whilst I find it a great honour to be asked to write your prayer page each month I am also very aware that this is a community magazine and would like everyone to feel free to use this page as an opportunity for prayer requests. I would consider it a privilege to pray with you and for you, so if you would like prayers to be included either for yourself or others, for a place or situation I would love to hear from you. Foston Book Club
On a very windy November evening the Book Club met to discuss the previous choice, The Tea Planter’s Wife by Dinah Jeffries. It was decided that the book was a fairly easy read with a formulaic plot although some readers didn’t pre-empt the twist! The next meeting isn’t until January so two books have been chosen to take the group over the festive period. Firstly Slade House by David Mitchell – as a supernatural thriller this is not for the faint hearted! Mitchell’s clever storytelling apparently builds the tension and suspense. The second choice couldn’t be more different in its description: a heartwarming story - a funny, moving and uplifting tale of love and community 10 I Saxonwell Group Parish News
which leaves you with a spring in your step. It is A Man called Ove, Fredrik Backman’s debut novel. In usual festive tradition, the Book Club will meet for its post-Christmas dinner on Friday 15th January. Please let Lucy know if you would like to attend by Tuesday 12th January. Everyone is welcome – level of attendance through the year doesn’t matter. Generally the club meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 8pm and this will resume in February 2016. The club welcomes all newcomers so if you would like to join, please contact Lucy on rnj.bliss@btinternet.com or (01400) 282661 for more details.

Long Bennington VPA Gardening Club October Monthly Talk Roger Pykett heroically stepped in at fairly short notice to be our speaker on 27 October after our planned speaker David Thornton was unable to come. (David will be coming in March now). After Roger experienced a short-lived technical problem, sorted out by Fiona Shilling our resourceful Chairman, he gave us a fascinating and funny insight into modern farming and how he has developed the farm at Hawton into a multi-stranded business. Not only does the farm produce food for us but also for a wide range of wildlife and Roger welcomes anyone who wants to appreciate the birds and animals by enjoying the lovely walks through the farm. A really enjoyable evening.

We are looking forward to getting this project underway in the New Year, and hope we can create an attractive addition to the site. We haven’t finalised routes yet, but are aiming to set out on the afternoon of Saturday April 2nd, finishing at the Village Hall for BBQ and drinks, so save the date and look out for more details on village notice boards nearer the time. Long Bennington Parish Council The Parish Council meeting on 2nd November was attended by five members of the public. Councillors were made aware of damage being caused to public open space at Elm Close by a horse being ridden on the grass. It was agreed enquiries are to be made by the PC to establish ownership of the land and confirmed that no permission has been given for use of the land for horse riding. Concerns were expressed over the damage to a pleasant grassed area that the Parish Council maintains. Residents were urged to report further instances under the Public Order Act. The availability of allotments was also discussed, Gareth Dawkins agreeing to undertake further investigations and establish the costs of getting a water supply to Witham Meadow. Anglian Water and the Environment Agency are to be contacted. If anyone has an interest in having an allotment and/or assisting with the establishment, please contact me. Councillors discussed a letter from NHS England regarding an application for a pharmacy in the village. No exact location was given and it was agreed to comment on the application, in liaison with the Medical Centre, expressing concerns over the potential adverse effects on existing services/businesses. The Parish Council agreed to co-opt a
new Councillor to fill one of the three current vacancies. Martin Wright is welcomed to the Parish Council. If any other residents would like to join the Council, please contact me. I will be happy to speak to anyone who would like to find out a bit more about what being a Parish Councillor entails. I am pleased to confirm that bulb planting has been undertaken this month with 225kg of daffodil bulbs being planted in verges at three different locations around the village and 500 snowdrops planted in the Memorial Gardens. Hopefully we should have a good spring display of flowers at the various locations. If you have suggestions for locations for similar planting next year, please let me know. PLEASE NOTE THE DATE FOR NEXT MEETING - MONDAY 7th DECEMBER As always, if you have any issues or concerns you wish to raise with the Parish Council, please contact me on 01400 282716 or email parishclerk@ longbenningtonparishcouncil.gov.uk With very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year, Jane Evans Parish Clerk

Since we’ve been back we’ve been working towards our Science Investigators badge. Funding for Allington Village Hall
The community in and around Allington is set to get improved kitchen and ancillary facilities in the Village Hall, thanks to a £10,916 grant from funding body WREN. The money, awarded by WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, will be used to refit the kitchen to give more storage cupboards, a fridge, a commercial dishwasher and new sinks; refurbish the outside storage sheds to provide much needed secure, dry, storage, and renovate the utility area with a new roof, dampproofing, new door and new lintel, at Allington Village Hall in Side Street, Allington. Cathy Green, Chairman of Allington Village Hall Management Committee, believes the new facilities will make a huge difference to the community using the Village Hall and will also attract more events and parties. She said “The ability to complete 24 I Saxonwell Group Parish News
washing up after an event in a few minutes rather than the two hours it can take now will be wonderful. This project will provide a real boost to Allington residents. It’s fantastic that WREN has awarded us this money and we’re really looking forward to our Village Hall’s improved facilities taking shape over the next six months.” WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s grant manager for Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, says: “We are delighted to be supporting the village hall project and pleased that our funding will provide such a fantastic facility for the people of Allington and the surrounding area. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really looking forward to seeing this one take shape soon.” Cathy Green hopes the renewed kitchen, utility area and storage sheds will be opened on the weekend of 23rd April 2016, (St George’s Day) when the Village Hall plans to hold a community celebration to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday, which falls on Thursday 21 April.

Around 100 BCE an Iron Age family settled down choosing a spot at the base of a steep hill near a pool in the river. Needing a postal address for their Amazon orders they called the place “Lindon” meaning “The Pool,” fortunately Liverpool was 13 centuries in the future else there would be such confusion. The area became Lincoln, the river the Wytham with Brayford Pool; but I am getting ahead of the narrative “Royal Visits to Lincolnshire from Edward II to Elizabeth II” which was delivered to a large audience by historian, writer and broadcaster Mr Chris Hewis. The Romans built a fort at the top of the hill Lindon became “Lindum”; the Emperor Domitian established a Colonia for retired legionnaires: Colonia Domitiana Lindensium became the capital of the largest Roman administrative area. Lincoln’s history is one of ups and downs from wealthy strategic importance to a poor backwater and back; its position in the civic hierarchy being reflected by the frequency of visits made by royalty. Throughout the medieval period Lincoln
welcomed most of the kings of England and a queen or two. William I built the castle in 1068: Richard II “loaned” a sword, James 1 gave a silver cup and Charles II a mace. Others fought; Stephen was defeated, Henry II victorious, later he met with Alexander of Scotland. John visited seven times. Edward 1 wife Eleanor died at Harby, her heart enshrined in Lincoln cathedral. Henry VIII was grumpy with Lincolnshire being “a brute and beastly shire”. William II was the last to visit, Victoria was absent. In the 20th century Lincoln fared no better than any other city; Edward VII, George VI and our present Queen came on purely utilitarian tasks of opening things. An exception, was George V in 1918; acknowledging the construction of the Sopwith Camel and the world’s first tanks. A long and illustrious history then with more to tell. Nativity Festival at St Peter’s Church On 12 and 13 December residents and groups are invited to display their nativity sets in Foston church. These can be in any format but as they will be on display for two days a live set is not an option! There’s already some great ideas for homemade ones; a mini nativity in a shoebox and ones made from Lego or paper. The church will be open that weekend so please come along and join in this different community celebration of Christmas. There’s a Nativity Celebration Service for the whole family at 4pm on Sunday 13th.
The church is looking forward to a real spectacle of special nativities. Contact Rev’d Harriet Orridge on 01400 281281 or Debbie Starr on 01400 282719 for more information.

Carols at Allington Manor
Thursday 3 December at 7.30pm The Loveden Quartet plan an evening of carols, old and new, along with mulled wine, mince pies and log fires - an ideal launch for our Christmas festivities. Each of the quartet live locally - hence our name - and bring a rich musical experience. One claims to have sung in nearly every cathedral in the country, another brings years of singing in Southwell Minster, the other two have sung all their lives in groups large and small and we all bring, and hope to share - our
love of music making. We are entirely unaccompanied. The programme, which will last for less than an hour, includes the very new to the very old, mixed with wellknown, loved carols, some lesser known and a few for everyone to sing. Tickets cost ÂŁ7 (all money including the raffle - is given to the MS Society) and are available from Allington shop and the Manor. For more information go to www.allingtonmanor.co.uk

Patient News from Medical Centre system/uploads/attachment_data/file/418038/ Flu_Pl an_Winter_2015_to_2016.pdf Health Screening We regularly review our health screening targets such as bowel cancer screening, cervical screening, diabetic eye screening and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening. Whilst our patient attendance in these groups exceeds local and national averages we seem to have a low uptake for breast screening. Dear Patient, The minutes of our last Patient Participation Group (PPG) meeting have been published on the Practice website http://www.longbenningtonmedicalcentre.nhs.uk/ppg.aspx. If you live in Claypole, Foston or Marston we would like to hear from you because we currently don’t have any PPG members in these villages and we would like you to get involved. 2015 Flu Campaign We have successfully managed to vaccinate about 55% of our eligible patients but we still have a way to go to reach the 75% national targets. If you are in one of the following patient groups and still haven’t booked your flu jab please contact the surgery on 01400 281220 as soon as possible: Aged 65 and over, or will be 65 by 31 March 2016 6 months to 65 years in a clinical risk group Pregnant women 2, 3 and 4 year olds Carers Further information about who is eligible for the flu vaccine can be found on page 38 of the Flu Plan Winter 2015/16: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/
Breast screening The major aim of the NHS breast screening programme is to reduce mortality from breast cancer. Breast screening is a method of detecting breast cancer at a very early stage and women in the target age group of 50 to 70 should be screened every 3 years. Encouraging non-attenders to begin going to screening can be a challenge but we want women to be informed about the risks and the importance of cancer screening. For more information about breast cancer screening please go to the NHS Choices website: http://www.nhs. uk/conditions/breast-cancer-screening/Pages/ Introduction.aspx Feedback As always, we welcome your feedback so please don’t forget to complete a Friends and Family Test survey which is available on reception whenever you pop into the surgery, or click on ‘Friends & Family Test’ on our website to complete the survey online. There are only two questions to answer and your response is appreciated. We would also like to thank those who have given us positive feedback on the NHS Choices website recently.
