Letter from the Vicarage
Dear All It’s harvest season! Over the summer months the farmers have been busy harvesting the crops, and now, with all the crops safely gathered in, we celebrate God’s goodness. Gathering together for special harvest services and meals to say thank you for all he has provided. Studies have shown that being thankful improves our physical and emotional health. Holding on to feelings of thankfulness boosts our immune system and increases blood supply to our heart. Daily guided exercises or the habit of keeping a weekly gratitude journal can increase our alertness, enthusiasm, energy, and improve our sleep. People who describe themselves as feeling grateful tend to suffer less stress and depression than the rest of the population. For all its benefits, gratitude doesn’t come naturally to us. As Jesus passed through a village one day, he was spotted by ten lepers who desperately longed to be healed (Luke 17:11-19). They kept themselves at a distance as required by law but cried out to him, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” Instead of instantly healing the men, Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priest. As the ten lepers walked off to obey, their skin disease disappeared. One of the men turned around, shouting praises to God as he came back to Jesus. He threw himself at his benefactor’s feet. Jesus expressed amazement that only one man had thought to thank him. “Were not all ten cleansed?” he asked. “Where are the other nine?” He also pointed out that the only man who did respond was a Samaritan, a race despised by the Jewish people. For Christians, cultivating a spirit of thankfulness is more than a good idea; it’s a direct 4 I Saxonwell Group Parish News
command from God. In the Old Testament, God laid down specific guidelines for the Israelites to bring thank offerings. In the New Testament, believers are instructed to be thankful in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18). There are times when we are struggling with trials and difficulties, at such moments this sounds like a strange command. But God knows that when we focus on our blessings, it’s easier to keep our problems and concerns in the right perspective. Interestingly our brain is wired to remember more clearly past occasions when we had similar feelings to the feelings we have at any given moment. Therefore if we are feeling thankful, we will more readily remember other occasions when we were thankful and consequently remember the things we are thankful for. King David never lost his keen awareness of all that God had done for the nation of Israel and for him personally. Even though he experienced disappointment, pain, and heartache, David often poured out his feelings of thankfulness to his Creator and Lord. That gratitude became the foundation of his worship of God. Cultivating a spirit of thankfulness honours God and strengthens our faith. It also strengthens our relationships with other people. We can’t be in a right relationship with God or with anyone without a spirit of thankfulness. No matter what problems we’re struggling with, we don’t want to be like the nine former lepers who forgot to say “thank you” to their Healer. Psalm 86:12-13 (NRSVA) 12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name for ever. 13 For great is your steadfast love towards me This Harvest season what are you thankful for? Do come and join us as we say thank you to God for all that he gives us this harvest. God bless Harriet

Methodist Church News Long Bennington Methodist Chapel The Sunday Service is at 10:30am The Minister: Rev Mark Roberts Chapel Secretary: Mrs E Eggleston Chapel Treasurer: Mr M Gledhill How much would you risk for a greengage? In the corner of our garden we have a greengage tree. Over the last three years it has been producing some of the most beautiful fruit you could imagine. The problem is getting it all. So when I’ve got all the fruit that I can easily reach with a ladder, I have to consider how much further I am prepared to go. I am often tempted to reach just that little bit further than is truly sensible. Thankfully, though I have had a few wobbles, I’ve yet to come crashing down. This is about as hard as Harvest gets in our suburban garden. The greengages are lovely, but the livelihoods of my family does not depend on them. Like most people, the food we grow ourselves makes up only a small part of our diet. It has not always been like that. Not so very long ago the success or failure of the harvest meant the difference between poverty and riches for many communities. A Harvest Festival service in the Autumn was a chance to celebrate that another year had gone well. Despite the changes over the years, Churches continue to hold Harvest Festivals. Even if

we are not involved in agriculture and we have a small garden it is still an important service. More than anything, a Harvest Festival reminds us that we should be thankful people. It is far too easy in this day and age for us to take the ready supply of food for granted. So in the service we take time to notice the food that we eat. We marvel at the variety and beauty of natural products. We thank God for those who grow our food and those who are involved in getting that food to our tables. Farmers in this and other countries are remembered. For them a bad harvest can still mean poverty. Long Bennington Methodist Church holds its Harvest Festival at 3pm on Sunday 27th September. Why not come along and celebrate the harvest with us?

Prayers for September Rejoice in the Lord always Philippians Chapter 4 Verse 4a Generous and gracious Father, we praise and thank you for all your goodness to us. For summertime, sunshine, holidays and time spent with family and friends. For rest, being in your presence and renewing our bodies, minds and spirits. September is the month we try to adjust once again into everyday routine. As we do so we think of young people who have experienced joy or disappoinment with recent exams results, please guide them in the decisions they make. We pray for those who for the first time will start school, college, university or work. Lord be very near them. We also ask you to bless Mrs King as she settles into her new role as Head Teacher at Long Bennington school. Heavenly Father, whenever we pary in your presence we are reminded of those for whom this is not a pleasant time. In the love of Jesus send your Holy Spirit to comfort, guide and protect all who are ill, sad, anxious or have needs known only to themselves and you.

Patient Participation Group (PPG)
We recently met with a few interested patients to discuss our Patient Participation Group (PPG). It was agreed that we should keep the group to a reasonable size to be effective. Therefore anyone wishing to be involved in the PPG or who wants to know more will be given the opportunity of joining our ‘virtual PPG’ and further information will be available soon. Minutes from the PPG meetings will eventually be available to read on our website www. longbenningtonmedicalcentre.co.uk. One of the main outcomes from the meeting was about communicating the services we offer and how patients can find out more about what we do. We plan to produce a regular newsletter which we hope will be seen by most of our patients that live in the surrounding 24 villages that we currently cover. We also discussed the number 8 I Saxonwell Group Parish News
We know it’s still officially summer but we are already planning this year’s flu campaign. We aim to start immunising patients, who are eligible for the flu vaccine, from the middle of October but notices will be displayed soon to remind everyone. All patients aged 65 and over should be immunised and we wish to notify those patients who will be 65 by 31 March 2016 that they should also contact us about having the flu vaccine. Patients aged 6 months to 65 who are in one of the Department of Health ‘at risk’ groups are also eligible for the flu vaccine this year. Further information about who is eligible for the flu vaccine can be found on page 38 of their Flu Plan Winter 2015/16: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/ system/uploads/attachment_data/file/418038/ Flu_Plan_Winter_2015_to_2016.pdf

Long Bennington Parish Council
The Parish Council meeting on 6 July was attended by four members of the public and three members of the public at the meeting on 3 August. A resident raised continued concerns over the poor state of the road on Sparrow Lane and it was suggested that a formal complaint is now submitted to both Lincs CC, Highways and SKDC for failing to enforce planning conditions in relation to drainage on Sparrow Lane. Councillors recently undertook a “village walk” to identify areas of concern and/or needing reporting to Lincs CC. A list is to be collated and submitted to Mark Heaton at LCC, Highways. The recent Grantham Running Club Summer Solstice Race was referred to and it was agreed this was a successful event in terms of hiring of the local facilities and organisation by the event managers. It is hoped the event will take place in Long Bennington next year. Further discussion took place regarding a revised planning application for development of land at the rear of the Royal Oak. Councillors resolved to submit further comments together with reconfirmation of previous objections. Following co-option, I am pleased to welcome Nick Taylor to the Parish Council. This now takes the number of Councillors to 8, leaving vacancies for a further 3. If you have an interest in supporting your local community and have a bit of free time to attend meetings once a month, please contact me for further details. Councillors discussed, in some detail, a letter very recently received from Persimmon Homes regarding potential development on 15 hectares of land at the south end of village. The letter also proposes assisting with the installation of new slip roads on and off the A1 at the south end of the village, to alleviate the issue
of increasing numbers of HGVs driving through the village. The letter proposed the Parish Council establishes a working partnership with Persimmon Homes to explore this proposal further. Chairman, Gareth Dawkins advised the proposed development could potentially provide 350-400 houses and perhaps continue for approx. 10 years. Following a full debate, it was resolved to advise Persimmon Homes that the Parish Council is not willing to enter into discussion regarding this proposed large scale development as it is regarded as untenable, unsustainable and not in accord with the emerging Neighbourhood Plan or SKDC’s Core Strategy. COMMUNITY CLEANING – HELP NEEDED The Parish Council is now looking to replace the excellent service provided by David Shilling over recent years, in his capacity of Community Cleaner. Sincere thanks are extended to David, by Councillors, for his support and service to help keep our village clean and litter free. The Parish Council is now inviting quotes for undertaking litter picking in the village for between 15 and 18 hours per month. Please forward your quotes/ proposals to me by close of business 25 September 2015 and please contact me should you need further information/ clarification. PLEASE NOTE THE DATES FOR

Long Bennington VPA Gardening Club June Visit
On a lovely evening on 23 June many of the members of the VPA made their way to Allington to visit the gardens of five members there. The gardens were looking fantastic and showed how very different gardens can be depending on their design, planting and how they evolve over time. There were also some lovely refreshments available. A really enjoyable evening all round.
August Day Trip
38 VPA members and family and friends went north on a Day Trip to Martin Fish’s garden near Ripon and then to the RHS’s garden Harlow Carr at Harrogate on 6 August. Martin Fish has been in horticulture all his life and had previously been to speak to the Club some years ago. Since then he and his wife moved to Rainton in 2009 and created a lovely garden of about 3/4 of an acre from scratch. He showed us round the garden explaining how they had planned and put the various elements in place really inspiring! Harlow Carr was looking marvellous, helped by the sun coming out, and there were lots of lovely treats including the stream, the magnificent borders, the wildflower meadows and the kitchen garden to delight. As Wallace and Gromit might say A Grand Day Out!
Summer Show
It’s the VPA’s Summer Show on 5 September and again St James’s Hall will we hope be packed with flowers, cakes, fruit, veg and photos and crafts. Details are in the centre of this Parish News. All entries are very welcome - you absolutely don’t have to be an expert. But if you prefer do come and join us just to view the Hall looking its best and perhaps get a cup of tea and cake from 3.00pm to 4.30pm.
September Meeting
On 29 September at 7.30pm Sue Stephenson will be providing a light hearted talk about Puddle Paddock the garden she has developed since 1977. If you have any questions or would like to join the Club call Bev Gledhill - Secretary on 01400 282239 or 07753 709513.

Long Bennington Head Teacher Retires
On July 22 Mrs Eveliegh retired following 13 years as Head teacher at Long Bennington Church of England Academy. Sue has led the school through outstanding Ofsted inspections and a multitude of Local, National and International competitions and awards. She is moving to Wales for her retirement. The community gifts were used to send her on her way with sheep for her new garden and an iPad that we hope she will use to send pictures of the sheep in their new home. The remaining monies were used to purchase a John Lewis gift voucher so she can choose something for herself in her new home. Sue has never been someone who wants to draw attention from Presents the children and their An Autumn Concert successes. She did not want to have a Friday 9th October by the retirement party so a small afternoon tea was COLLINGHAM SINGERS held on the last day Preforming their “Top Twenty” of term for Governors A musical miscellany from medieval times to the 21st century and staff to attend. Foston Village Hall Fete
Foston Village Hall committee members would like to thank all those who contributed to their Fete held on Saturday 27 June; * Doctor Longfield who opened the event. * Allington School who gave a tremendous ‘James Bond’ themed gymnastics display. * Stall holders who supported it and the ladies who were kept busy supplying refreshments. * The many volunteers who helped run games, setting up the tents and bunting to make the grounds, festive; and most of all helping to take it all down again! * Those who bought and sold raffle tickets - the running of the bar and bar-b-que plus ice creams - all made for a splendid afternoon. * The much enjoyed ‘Tug-of-war’ is likely to become a permanent finale. Allington Pre-‐School – a hidden gem It’s been a busy 6 months for Allington Pre School. In January 2015 we welcomed a new highly experienced manager, Marie Harris, and under her supervision our team have taken the opportunity to bring in some new ideas and improvements. We have extended our outdoor provision following a two-‐day outdoor training session the team attended and we are focused on ‘Getting it right for 2 year olds’. All this hard work has been rewarded by staff and parents seeing engaged, motivated and happy children as well as a huge thumbs up from Ofsted who awarded us with a Good certification at the end of May 2015 -‐
In their words:
“Teaching is very good. Staff use accurate assessments to identify children's next steps in learning. They plan activities that promote learning, based on children's needs and interests. As a result, all children make good progress towards the early learning goals.” “Staff form warm and caring relationships with children and are sensitive to their needs. Consequently, children feel secure and have a strong sense of belonging”. “Staff liaise successfully with parents and other provisions children attend. This ensures they receive consistency in their care. As a result, children are well prepared for their future move, such as school.” What this means is that not only do we offer a fantastic educational, as well as fun, environment for children to flourish but our Good rating also means we are able to offer funding for eligible 2 year olds.
What’s special about Allington Pre School? -‐ -‐ -‐ -‐ -‐ -‐
Close links with Allington Primary School with regular visits in the term prior to starting school We are a small, close knit and very caring pre-‐school with low child to carer ratios We welcome children from the age of two (many local pre-‐school admissions start from 3 years of age) We offer ‘full day’ sessions (many pre-‐schools only offer morning sessions) as well as morning or afternoon only sessions (or a mix – whatever suits you) As we are a not for profit organisation, we are able to keep our session prices low for those not wishing to access funded hours We have close links with other settings for children who split their time allowing for continuity of learning
Looking to the future, we are extending our opening hours from September to 9am to 3pm Mon to Wed. However there is a fly in the ointment, in that his year, and last, we saw a number of our children move on to school so now we need lots of new children to join us. So please spread the word to your family and friends. Come and see us at a time that suits you. Take us up on our offer of a free taster session. The July meeting of the LB W.I. took place on Tuesday 7 July. There were over 30 members attending and they enjoyed a lively and interesting illustrated talk on Japanese Flowers, Festivals and Food delivered by Russ Yates, a garden consultant, who had lived and worked in Japan for seven years as an Embassy garden adviser. He explained that the Japanese celebrate something nearly every month of the year and his slides allowed an insight into the fascinating culture of that country. Instead of the usual meeting in August 40 members, partners and friends spent the evening of August 11th cruising down the River Trent at Nottingham whilst enjoying a delicious carvery meal. They could not have chosen a sunnier, calmer evening. The next meeting is on 1 September at 7.30pm when the speaker will be Mary Elmer, a talented spinner and weaver, whose talk is entitled “From Fleece to Finish”. Do come and join in the fun. Ladies, if anyone has any completed flowers please bring them along to the meeting. 2015 sees the 100th anniversary of the National Federation of WIs. See page 31 to find out how you can help to celebrate this event on Saturday 19 September. Jean Higgs For details of membership contact Jeanne Day on 282873.

Foston Book Club
The club last met in July when the majority had read The Boy that Never Was by Karen Perry. Most found it a good read and concurred with the excellent reviews – definitely a mystery worth reading. One reader had nearly finished The Miniturist by Jesse Burton but was not recommending it as a must-read. The next meeting is 15 September and the book choice is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The group felt it ought to read this Pulitzer prize-winning classic before potentially moving onto its new (and not as acclaimed) sequel, Go Set a Watchman. The club welcomes all newcomers so if you would like to join, please contact Lucy on rnj.bliss@btinternet.com or (01400) 282661 for more details.
Foston Harvest Lunch
The annual village Harvest Lunch is being held at 1pm on Sunday 13 September at the Village Hall. It is always a wonderful time to get together and enjoy lunch and a good catch up. The Harvest Lunch follows the Church Service which is at 3.30pm. Tickets cost £7 (£3.50 for under 12s) from Lucy Bliss (282661) or Debbie Starr (282719). Soft drinks will be served but feel free to bring your own wine. Numbers are restricted so reserve your space soon.
Foston Wine Tasting
Wine Tasting in Foston seems to have become a very popular annual event – and it is back on 30 October at 8pm at the Village Hall. Waitrose kindly facilitate the evening for us and provide different and interesting wines to tempt and stretch our tastebuds. It’s advisable to walk not drive. Tickets are priced £10 from Lucy Bliss (282661) or Pete and Rita Drury (281660). Tickets must be purchased before 23 October and profits go to St Peter’s Church, Foston.

Letters to the Editor Superfast Broadband for Sedgebrook
I have been informed by Online Lincolnshire that the cabinet which sources the majority of the phone lines in Sedgebrook village is Bottesford 5 which became ‘ready for service’ yesterday. This means that products can be ordered from it in two weeks and everyone within the village who is connected to this cabinet should be able to sign up to a superfast product. Residents need to know about the upgrade and that on around the 14August they need to be contacting their internet service providers. Beware of scammers
I was recently phoned by someone pretending to be from TalkTalk, who are my broadband suppliers. They had my account details so I believed them to be genuine. They said there was a problem with my computer and that I needed to pay £15 for it to be fixed. I gave them my bank details. I am recently widowed and I think I was deliberately targeted as another of my friends, again a TalkTalk customer and recently widowed, was phoned by the same person. As soon as I put the phone down I called my bank. They had already taken £400 from my account. The bank refunded my money and stopped any further payments. If this happens to you call Lincs Police on 0300 1110300. Name supplied upon request
