Letter from the Vicarage

Hello everyone, During September and October we gave thanks for the bountiful harvest that God had given us. God has given us so much more than just food on our plates. “In the beginning God created the world”. We have also been given freedom. November brings with it not only colder weather and darker evenings, but also the season of Remembering. On the 8th of November (Remembrance Sunday) as a community we will gather to stop, and through acts of remembrance give thanks for the freedom which we enjoy, and for which others gave their lives. (There will be a Remembrance Day service in each church please see separate notice for more details). Two of the causes of the First World War were Nationalism and Imperialism. At the beginning of the 20th Century nations were squabbling about who was the best, and trying to grab as much land for themselves as possible, setting up colonies in Africa. At the Harvest services I talked about Trusting God, knowing that he will provide for our needs and as a result sharing what we have with others. During the Israelites time in the wilderness, God provided for them with manna every morning. Each person would get up and gather what they needed for that 4 I Saxonwell Group Parish News

day. There are a couple of things to note from this story. Firstly this pericope begins with the Israelites (on the fifteenth day of the second month after leaving Egypt) grumbling that they had all the food they could eat in Egypt, and now they were starving. It had taken only 45 days for the Israelites to forget the slavery! Secondly, each morning everyone got up and collected what they needed, some gathered lots, some little, but when measured each had what they needed. A hundred years on from the “War to end all Wars” sadly much of the world is still at war. Even sadder is perhaps the fact that two of the biggest causes of these wars are still nationalism and imperialism. Today it is important that we remember that we are all children of God and that God has provided all that we need, so we don’t need to grab at and horde the worlds resources. Today thousands of people are fleeing countries torn apart by war, hoping for a life of freedom. Politicians are debating how to share the resources of the European Union out fairly, so that no one country has to bear too much or too little. As individuals such situations can seem miles away and beyond us, however through the work of organisations like Samaritans Purse and their Shoebox appeal, we can share what we have with others. Heavenly Father, help us to remember that we are all your children and to see your face in the faces of others. Help us to trust that you will provide for all our needs, and in doing so help us to share all that we have. Help us to honour our past by building a better future. Amen Harriet

Harvest Festivals

Thank you to everyone who helped in any way with the Harvest celebrations in each of our churches, to those who helped at a our wonderful Harvest Suppers, through to everyone who brought gifts. Thank you to the parents and children of Allington School for their harvest baskets, bringing a smile to many local people. Methodist Church News Long Bennington Methodist Chapel The Sunday Service is at 10:30am The Minister: Rev Mark Roberts Chapel Secretary: Mrs E Eggleston Chapel Treasurer: Mr M Gledhill There’s too much breakfast cereal in our kitchen at the moment - it’s taken over the surfaces as well as the cupboards. We aren’t buying any more than we’ve always done, it’s just that we are not eating as much. This excess of cereal is one of the tangible signs that life in the Manse has changed. At the end of September our eldest daughter (and her healthy appetite) headed off for her first term at University. She’s settled in very well and seems to be having a wonderful time, with life full of activity, study and new friends. Her life goes on, as does ours, but here at home there is now a partial emptiness. One room is not being used and there is a space at the dining table. At least that emptiness is temporary. The plan is to go and see her at the end of October and she will be home for Christmas. Many homes though live with a permanent sense of partial emptiness. Children will eventually move on, but there are other reasons for the emptiness too. I’ve been thinking about the funerals I’ve done so far this year. In my churches, including Long Bennington, we have lost a number of faithful members

who are still missed. November is a special time for remembering those who have gone. On Sunday November 8th we will be holding our annual Remembrance service which this year is at the Methodist Church. The list of names of those who died in the First and Second World Wars will be read and we will be reminded of the impact on individual households and the village as a whole. All Souls Day at the beginning of November also provides an opportunity for remembering in many places. In special services, the names of those who have died are read and remembered, candles are lit, and prayers are said. In Long Bennington this service is at St Swithun’s at 2pm on Sunday 1st November. The Christian hope expressed in these services is that any emptiness caused by death is temporary too. God’s love through Jesus Christ goes on beyond death and we shall one day know the fullness of God’s love. Mourning, crying and pain will be no more. Until then, we wait and remember. Mark

Prayers for October The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never put it out John 1:5

Father God as the long dark nights of November begin may we never lose sight of the light of hope which shines ever before us as we approach the season of Advent. As this month also brings a significant time of remembrance we think of those who over the years have laid down their lives through war and conflict so that we may enjoy lives of freedom and peace - help us never to forget their cost. Caring God comfort all who grief at this time and we ask you to be especially close to everyone during our All Soul’s Day Service or Remembering, when we will give thanks for the lives of all our dearly departed loved ones, lighting a candle in memory of them and being reassured ourselves that they now dwell in the perpetual light of Heaven. We also ask you to hold in your loving arms all those amongst us for whom this time is particularly dark, the sick in mind body or spirit, any in hospital, the lonely, weary or

sad. Our Prayer for them is that you will reach out, touch and refresh them with your divine love. Dear Father whenever the way ahead in life is unclear, however dark our lives may seem remind us once more of your Advent promise - the coming of Jesus into this world - He alone can truly illuminate, and should be a constant guide before us and whose glory will light our way. In His name we Pray. AMEN Suzanne Hartle Whilst I find it a great honour to be asked to write your prayer page each month I am also very aware that this is a community magazine and would like everyone to feel free to use this page as an opportunity for prayer requests. I would consider it a privilege to pray with you and for you, so if you would like prayers to be included either for yourself or others, for a place or situation I would love to hear from you. Flintham Show comes to LB

Just over one hundred years ago a bet took place at Flintham’s Boot and Shoe public house that would be the beginning of the Flintham and District Ploughing Match. A race was organised between the young lads of the village to see who could plough an acre of land in the best manner. That race still goes on, and this year it took place at Gablestock in Valley Lane. It was the 95th Flintham show and competitors and visitors turned out in great numbers to watch tractors and horse ploughs compete for the titles. Trade stands showcased farming equipment and supplies along with a wide range of products for the visitors; from pies and fudge to paintings and clothes. Local food producers cooked burgers and sausages to feed the hungry crowds. There was a wide range of events from horse ploughing to scarecrow displays,

livestock judging to hedge laying. An educational tent displaying bygones from farming through the years brought school children in their droves. Kids could also enter a painting competitions and the horticultural tent had with competitions for everyone. From home baked goods to vegetable growing and wine making to flower arranging. The craft marquee was brimming with innovative stalls selling and making all types of handiwork. A range of displays and classes performed in the centre ring throughout the day giving spectators the chance to view rare breeds of cattle and carriage driving. Local farmers bought along their cattle and sheep to compete alongside one another and there were even some alpacas. The show moves on to a new home next year but it won’t be far away and is definitely worth a visit.

Long Bennington VPA Gardening Club September Monthly Talk

Sue Stephenson came on 29 September, together with her husband who had to put up with a certain amount of fun at his expense, to talk about their trials and tribulations in establishing Puddle Paddock. Puddle Paddock is their “Good Life” dream brought to life at their home and smallholding on the other side of Holbeach. Here they grow plants and look after a menagerie of animals. It was a very entertaining evening and any problems we might have experienced in moving home were as nothing compared to theirs!

Christmas Social

On 24 November at 7.30pm in St James’s Hall VPA will be having their Christmas Social, with some lovely food and drink, and a talk from Doug Stewart. If you have any questions or would like to join the Club call Bev Gledhill, Secretary on 01400 282239 or 07753 709513. 10 I Saxonwell Group Parish News

Long Bennington Parish Council The Parish Council meeting on 5th October was attended by four members of the public. Councillors discussed ongoing action regarding the recent flooding in Long Bennington and it was reported that following a drop in session held by Lincolnshire County Council, approximately 30 properties have now been reported as having experienced internal flooding following the storm in August. It was agreed to hold a public meeting to discuss proposed/required actions and preferred outcomes. It is intended a public meeting is to be held at 7.30pm on Thursday 26th November at St James’s Hall, Long Bennington. If you are interested in attending, please contact me for further details or see the Parish Council Noticeboard for further details/ confirmation nearer the time. Councillors agreed to arrange a meeting with Anglian Water, as a preliminary meeting to the public meeting. Neighbourhood Plan – a drop in session at the village hall was held on Saturday 3rd October where residents could view, discuss and comment on the Draft Neighbourhood Plan. All residents in Long Bennington should have received a questionnaire (delivered with the last

Parish News) and I would urge everyone to provide comment/input. Further copies of the questionnaire are available on the Parish council website. The consultation period will continue until 13th November. Councillors discussed the Speed Indication Devices (SIDs) and in particular the short battery life and the practicalities of regular charging of these heavy devices. A few Councillors have agreed, informally, to undertake this task. Hopefully many of you will now be aware the SIDs, purchased by the Parish Council in the attempt to help reduce the increasing problem of speeding traffic through the village. These are being rotated between a small number of different locations around the village in accordance with advice/information from Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership. PLEASE NOTE THE DATE FOR NEXT MEETING - MONDAY 2nd NOVEMBER VILLAGE HALL 7.30PM As always, if you have any issues or concerns you wish to raise with the Parish Council, please contact me on 01400 282716 or email parishclerk@ longbenningtonparishcouncil.gov.uk Jane Evans Parish Clerk

Nativity Festival at St Peter’s Church On 12 and 13 December residents and groups are invited to display their nativity sets in Foston church. These can be in any format but as they will be on display for two days a live set is not an option! There’s already some great ideas for homemade ones; a mini nativity in a shoebox and ones made from Lego or paper. The church will be open that weekend so please come along and join in this different community celebration of Christmas. There’s a Nativity Celebration Service for the whole family at 4pm on Sunday

Carols at Allington Manor

Thursday 3 December at 7.30pm The Loveden Quartet plan an evening of carols, old and new, along with mulled wine, mince pies and log fires - an ideal launch for our Christmas festivities. Each of the quartet live locally - hence our name - and bring a rich musical experience. One claims to have sung in nearly every cathedral in the country, another brings years of singing in Southwell Minster, the other two have sung all their lives in groups large and small and we all bring, and hope to share - our

love of music making. We are entirely unaccompanied. The programme, which will last for less than an hour, includes the very new to the very old, mixed with wellknown, loved carols, some lesser known and a few for everyone to sing. Tickets cost ÂŁ7 (all money including the raffle - is given to the MS Society) and are available from Allington shop and the Manor. For more information go to www.allingtonmanor.co.uk

Copy deadline for the December/January issue is 15 November News, stories and advertising should be sent to Sue Baggaley at parishnews.saxonwell@gmail.com

Long Bennington Local History Society 29 September 2015

The members of the society gathered in anticipation of an address about dirigible airships over-flying Lincolnshire. Sadly they were disappointed when the speaker failed to materialize; they might have missed their September talk altogether. Happily, Colin Deeley stepped forward and volunteered to provide an address about Gunby Hall, a National Trust property situated in Lincolnshire, near to Spilsby and seven or eight miles from the coast at Skegness. The Hall was constructed in 1700 for the use of the Massingberd family who traced their family line back to Saxon times. As a consequence of judicious marriages the early 17th century found the Massingberds as considerable landowners, loyal enough and wealthy enough to receive a baronetcy some time during the reign of the early Stuart kings. The second baronet, Sir William, decided the family deserved a better house and initiated the building of Gunby Hall. It is described as “William and Mary” in style and, with no ridged roof covering it, its façade looks almost as if it were designed as a cube pierced by windows and a door. When Sir William died his successor in the baronetcy and Gunby Hall was his son, also William. This third baronet remained unmarried and died without issue. His sister Elizabeth who inherited the Hall and estate was obliged to assume the name Massingberd as a condition of ownership. The name Massingberd could not be allowed to slip away from Gunby Hall while ever descendents of the second baronet lived in it. Amongst others we have Meux Massingberd, Langton Massingberd, until in 1944 the Montgomery Massingberds presented the Hall to the National Trust and the covenant ran out. For 150 years the Massingberds were quite content with Sir William’s house and it wasn’t until the 1850’s that an extension was added to the Hall. Two bays, two storeys tall, were tacked on to the North end of the building. Forty years after that three more bays were added as further improvement, destroying whatever was left of the 28 I Saxonwell Group Parish News

symmetry of the façade. Mr Deeley showed an edited photograph of the Hall (without the “leanto” extension) which demonstrated quite clearly the deleterious effect of this later construction on the aesthetic of the building. Moving into the interior of the Hall we were presented on the ground floor with delightful rooms complete with very well-kept furnishings. Some clocks of remarkable age and appearance were noted in passing. Most noticeable were the oak staircase and the family portraits covering a large proportion of the walls. The staircase had barley twist spindles whose weight implied earlier rather than later 17th century design. Perhaps that was because late 17th century Lincolnshire was a little provincial. The proliferation of portraits showed how the family clung on to their contacts. Two snippets of poetry, one by Tennyson and one by Kipling indicate that the family had some literary connections. A copy of Boswell’s “Life of Johnson” is unique in being inscribed with a dedication by its author. A well worn grand piano which had travelled to India and back provided an indication that there were musical interests from the late 19th century onwards; these developed into a series of concerts which were celebrated sufficiently to be broadcast often on the BBC Home Service. In the basement were the kitchens, pantries and stores which provided sustenance for the Massingberds. All these are effectively empty, devoid of the hanging game in the game store, of the wine in the cellar, and the pots and pans and staff in the kitchen. After emerging from this subterranean gloom the views of the gardens gave a bright prospect. Flower gardens, vegetable gardens, hothouses, all were there, all producing appropriate quantities of flora. Their output provided an indication of the effort required to maintain even a relatively modest house like Gunby Hall. The most impressive vista of the gardens was, however, the view from the front door of the house down the drive running directly from the door straight to the horizon.

Perhaps by some freak of nature, maybe by judicious planting and pruning, the bushes and trees on either side of the drive showed mirror image symmetry. Amazing, astonishing, aweinspiring, it created a sense of pleasure and relief that the Victorians had not improved it as they had the house. It fostered also a twinge of regret that the Hall had not been left alone as well. It’s intriguing that amongst all the Massingberds who owned the Hall over two and a half centuries there was only one maverick, Algernon, who intended to use the estate to pay off inter alia his gambling debts. Fortunately for his successors his ambition was thwarted when he went on an expedition to the Amazon and failed to return. It was reported that he had been shot and died at a village on the Brazil-Colombia border; he was declared dead in 1855 at the age of 27. In spite of his depredations the estate was still substantial and formed a foundation for some expansion. On the Gunby estate is the unusual

Monksthorpe Chapel. This was constructed by a Baptist sect at the same time as the Hall was built. These non-conformists sought to avoid persecution by making their chapel identical in form with an agricultural barn. This allowed them to avoid brushes with authority until their activities were permitted by law. It seems quite plausible to assume that the Massingberds turned a sympathetic blind eye to their doctrinal deviations from the path defined by the established church. On that thought-provoking note Colin Deeley corralled his audience back into the Village Hall. He had resolved the crisis of the absent speaker and given a talk which commanded the attention and stimulated the interest of all present. He received a great deal of wellmerited applause and deserved the thanks and “Bravos” of his audience. The next meeting of the Society will be on November 23rd when there will be festive refreshments.

Foston Book Club

In October the club’s chosen book was The Hundred Year Man who Climbed out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. All agreed it was an amusing and good read, even if somewhat flippant and ridiculous in places! The choice for November is The Tea Planter’s Wife by Dinah Jeffries – a step back in time to the landscape and culture of Ceylon in the 1920s. Perhaps tea

will be served at the next meeting! The club is next meeting on Tuesday 17th November meeting from 8pm (the 3rd Tuesday of the month is the usual meeting date). The club welcomes all newcomers so if you would like to learn more, please contact Lucy on rnj.bliss@ btinternet.com or (01400) 282661 for more details.

Sedgebrook Harvest Service St Lawrence’s in Sedgebrook would like to to offer its grateful thanks to all those villagers who contributed time, effort, food and wine to make the Harvest Service on 4 October such a success. Particular thanks to the pupils of Allington and Sedgebrook school for their magnificent harvest display. John Pike said: “For a couple of hours, we could forget our damaged roof and organ”.
