BLANKA THE LABEL

MANIFESTING DESTINY & DESIGNS BLANKA BOUTIQUE OWNER AND PERSONAL STYLIST JENNIE STIERWALT ADDS FASHION DESIGNER TO HER RESUME AND GIVES US THE SKINNY ON THE LAUNCH OF HER PRIVATE COLLECTION BLANKA THE LABEL.

MADE IN L.A. We manufacture in Los Angeles. It’s so cool to produce locally and provide fair paying jobs in my home state! Because the fashion industry is one of the highest polluting industries in the world, we use deadstock fabric so that we are not part of the problem! So a lot of our fabrics are only available in small quantities and won’t be repeated, so each delivery is one-of-a-kind.

Vintage Bag

ABOUT BLANKA THE LABEL It’s inspired by classic vintage silhouettes reminiscent of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Our wrap dress, a best-seller, fits a variety of body types. Customers love the slightly sexy attitude, plunging neckline, and touch of feminine glamour it provides. Our two piece 50’s inspired pencil skirt and tank is one of my personal favorites - it’s classy and timeless.

Vintage Hat

Luna Earrings

DREAMS = REALITY Designing BLANKA the LABEL has been a dream come true. It’s amazing to see the sketches and designs I created in high school and college become a reality! It nurtures my faith that we really can create the life of our dreams. So thankful I have!

ON DESIGN I design pieces that are missing in the other collections I carry in the store. Some pieces are inspired by my personal styling clients who need classic basics - from the perfect blazer to the perfect tank, to the perfect tee (coming in spring ‘18)! Classic Wrap Dress

s i r e n a Making a Splash in the Funk Z one

Meet business partners and friends, Ariel Miller and Leah

Washuta, who recently opened Sirena - a little oasis of affordable fashion in the Funk Zone. These two know a thing or two about California cool having been born and raised in Malibu and Santa Barbara respectively. This insight is reflected in their boutique’s well-edited, elevated selection of contemporary clothing, jewelry, accessories, and shoes. Located on the second level of the building at the corner of Yanonali and Grey, Sirena - mermaid in Spanish captures effortless Santa Barbara style, while leaving money in your wallet for the wine tasting and dining below. The inspiration We wanted to bring a fresh, new, on-trend and sexy look to Santa Barbara, while still keeping it affordable - that’s why nothing in the store is over $150. For us, it’s all about blending a laid back beach vibe with a little more of a city aesthetic. The vibe It was also important to create a fun and relaxed vibe in store. One where our clients feel comfortable to stop by, chat, get inspired and enjoy a glass of rose with us...after all, it is the Funk Zone. currently on exhibit Elizabeth Gordon Gallery continues to push the envelope within the Santa Barbara art scene, offering works from accomplished

contemporary artists from all around the country. Current artist, Wallace Cleveland Piatt is certainly no exception. Wallace’s work is inspired by industrial environments, layers of old street art, vintage imagery, and chaotic issues in his life. His work is an eccentric combination of several vastly different areas of artistic vision - blatantly bold colors, audacious pop art-like graphics, and modern minimal settings, along with a generous side of social commentary. porch Where shelter and nature converge and community is created. FOR CALIFORNIA NATIVES Diana Dolan and Christie Boyd, nature is always the muse. When the two opened Porch in 2008 they wanted to share their common love of beauty and create a place where the local community could gather and be inspired. And after 9.5 years in business, it's apparent their connection to the community is as vital as the merchandise they sell. Their gorgeous home and garden store, housed in a loft-like space, opens up to an expansive garden. It has become a Mecca for customers seeking to create Porch’s distinctive indoor-outdoor, organic style in their homes. Loyal locals stop in weekly to see fresh shipments of indoor and outdoor furniture, lighting, dinnerware, textiles, and outdoor planters, both contemporary and Mediterranean style - goods that Porch owner, Diana Dolan lovingly refers to as “jewelry for the home.” Exquisite cactus and succulent arrangements, perfect for gifting or for the home, are available in a multitude of vessels and sizes. Porch has a dynamic Instagram feed which features new arrivals and the latest happenings, so shoppers don’t miss a thing! Out-of-area customers can still shop, as Porch will happily ship! The inviting garden got an update last spring and now boasts an open-air “shed” that accommodates ever-changing outdoor living vignettes, as well as regular workshops that bring the community together. Recent workshops included growing and cooking with heirloom tomatoes, adult summer camp (aka glamping & stamping), summer entertaining,

and planting tabletop cactus gardens. Another new addition currently parked in the garden is a gleaming vintage trailer, home to Folly, a tiny boutique filled with an interesting mix of vintage and handmade artisan goods, mostly from California. Porch hosts regular art shows and provides local emerging artists, like fine art photographer Will Pierce, an opportunity to share their work and launch burgeoning careers. Because supporting the community that supports Porch is of the utmost importance to owners Christie and Diana, 10% of art show sales is donated directly to the Carpinteria Arts Center. 3823 Santa Claus Lane, Carpinteria 93013 • 805.684.0300 • porchsb.com Instagram @porch_carpinteria

DENIM TAILORING LANDS IN SANTA BARBARA Beau Lawrence introduces his Ace Rivington collection of made in USA denim, tees and sweatshirts, along with a full selection of lifestyle goods and gifts at Santa Barbara’s La Arcada shopping center. N NOVEMBER 7TH, 2013 after arriving home in Carpinteria early for a typical workday, Beau Lawrence announced to his wife Yasmin (who was six months pregnant with their second child at the time), “Sweetie, I just quit my job, and this piece of fabric is our future.” Every brand has a story, and this is how local Men's Lifestyle brand, Ace Rivington, got its start. The fabric that would eventually be branded “Homespun French Terry” was an essential element in launching Ace Rivington's iconic crewneck sweatshirt on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. After a very successful campaign, Lawrence would return to his wife, this time asking her if they could sell their house to finance building a full collection. 110,000 catalogs later, the full Ace Rivington line of men's goods was born. Inspired by “a character 100 times cooler than me”, Ace Rivington is a fictional figure Lawrence dreamed up - half A River Runs Thru It and half Remington Guns (or typewriters depending on your likes). Denim, which Lawrence knows incredibly well after spending 16 years in Global Denim Design for Guess and other major players, is the foundation of the apparel assortment. Ace Rivington jeans are produced in Los Angeles from fabric imported from Italian denim mill Candiani. Take advantage of the on-site tailoring and alterations while you sip one of Ace’s famous mojito’s, and soak in the sounds of Buena Vista Social Club - a truly unique shopping experience. In addition to everything from well-priced button up shirts and tees to denim and sweatshirts, the lifestyle store carries other goods sourced from “friends around the US who are also following their dreams by building their own brands,” says Lawrence. Exploring new destinations in style and comfort embodies the Ace Rivington ethos, and a shopping trip here is a quintessential Santa Barbara retail experience. 1114 State St #25 • 805.881.2999 acerivington.com

T

HE REED INTERIORS TEAM ASSISTED A LOCAL SANTA BARBARA CUSTOMER designing, creating and installing their dream kitchen and floor. It was imperative to the customer that the kitchen be aesthetically stunning and functional at the same time. Clean lines and open spaces were essential to create the desired modern look, yet still maintaining a warmth for comfortable family cooking and casual gatherings. When visiting the space, Michel Clair, head designer at REED, suggested to open the space by creating large windows facing the beautiful oak trees. Bringing the outside in, transformed the entire space with a natural warmth and tranquility that only nature can provide. The kitchen features a balanced mix of white lacquer and dark oak with a modern and open design. Long counter tops, a large island, plenty of storage, and the luxury of invisible appliances. The flooring is a vintage European design, a collection crafted out of genuine French White Oak, a premier hardwood. For centuries, this wood has been used for everything from flooring to shipbuilding because of its stability. The floors generous widths and lengths is topped with REED's exclusive finish for a classic aesthetic. Custom stair treads helped beautify the staircase. There's nothing the REED's team enjoys more than seeing their clients happy, and seeing that "WOW" expression on their faces upon completion. CA DARIO Cá Dario has been one of Santa Barbara's favorite Italian food restaurant for many years. The food is excellent, the decor is inviting and lively and the staff is professional and attentive. TRE LUNE

Like a second home - with first-rate food

M

ontecito residents treat Tre Lune Ristorante & Bar like a second home, dining there several times a week. Many visitors do the same, becoming short-term regulars. Tre Lune is that kind of place - comfortable and classic with wood floors, white tablecloths, vintage paparazzi photos on the walls, and veteran servers. Guests are immediately presented with crusty artisanal bread, a bottle of fine spicy olive oil from the Puglia region, and a ramekin of spinach pesto. Add a cocktail or wine from the extensive, exclusively Italian list, annually recognized by Wine Spectator, and all is suddenly and soothingly well. The menu is a sweeping lineup of authentic, carefully prepared regional classics made with the best ingredients from Italy - tomatoes, olives, cheeses, and cured meats - and local farmers markets. The snappy grilled calamari with spinach is a fantastic alternative to fried calamari, also delicious here. The carpaccio is benchmark good. Whole branzino, cooked in the pizza oven, swam in the Mediterranean yesterday. There are diverse pizzas and pastas, veal scaloppini, and ossobuco - a braised veal shank with saffron risotto. “Humble” spaghetti and meatballs has become, at Tre Lune, a destination dish on its own. The main menu sticks to Italy, but breakfast (served seven days a week) is international, with egg dishes, waffles, pancakes, bagels and salmon, and much more. SANTO MEZCAL A delicious shot of Mezcal.

SANTO MEZCAL brings a welcome infusion of first-rate, authentic regional Mexican food to lower State Street. Located next to the Indigo Hotel, on the edge of the Funk Zone, the newest addition to the Los Agaves family of restaurants is a bit more upscale than its siblings, with table service, a modern interior and a full bar fronting a wall of mezcals and tequilas. Santo Mezcal continues the family tradition of great food and friendly service and even shares some menu items, like the kids favorites taquitos and queso fundito. But while more-complex dishes can be challenging in the fast-paced Los Agaves kitchens, here no one minds waiting a couple of minutes while sharing appetizers or one of the signature ceviches with a beer or a house specialty drink in hand. The food is colorful and delicious, with an emphasis on seafood. Try the tacos with grilled octopus, hummus, avocado and pepper oil; the crab enchiladas; any of the moles, or shrimp with a mezcal cream sauce. Whole fish emerge from the oak-burning oven, and there are great deals on rib-eye steak, which is served several ways, including with a cheese-stuffed pasilla pepper, a crab enchilada and beans. LOS ARROYOS

The Los Arroyos Mexican Restaurant & Takeout family of restaurants keeps growing, with outlets in Santa Barbara, Montecito, Camarillo and the newest, in Goleta, which opened in June. their Don't miss out on Here you’ll find the same lovingly crafted fare served at every Los Arroyos, which means the cajete, same handmade tortillas, the same great salsa bar, homemade everything, and rice that’s cooked outhwatering Mol m fresh up to ten times daily and never reheated. s del Mar. We had The comfortable, casual interior is a bit more modern here, with dark faux-leather banquettes, Pa zo le , & Ta co tile, and white walls adorned with black-and-white images of “ingredients,” from chiles to corn to try all three! to a tortilla press, taken by local photographer Silas Fallstich. There’s also a full bar with many interesting tequilas, a couple of big-screen TVs, and a spacious shaded outdoor patio. It’s the ideal setting for drinks and $6 appetizers, such as a langostino quesadillas, grilled bacon-wrapped shrimp with avocado, or a taco trio plate (chicken, steak and carnitas) during happy hour from 3-6 p.m., Monday - Friday. Maybe the biggest Los Arroyos “secret” is the Saturday and Sunday breakfast, with authentic Mexican dishes at prices ranging from $7.95 to a breakfast steak dish for $12.95. There’s rich, strong coffee to go with it, and to go with that, there’s a new kicker: homemade churros. PLANTS MEET PLATE Three years ago, Mesa Verde brought a vibrant new world of plant-based cuisine to Cliff Drive. Since then, the casual spot has become a locals’ favorite for delicious vegan food blending vibrant Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. Chef de Cuisine Chris Rayman talks about the need to “build flavor” in vegan dishes, and build he does. Polenta fries come with smoked patty pan squash, white beans, and za’atar, a thyme-based Middle Eastern spice mix with toasted sesame and cumin. Caramelized fried Brussels sprouts team with pickled red onions, pumpkin seeds, fava bean puree, za’atar, sherry vinegar and tamari. Zucchini “pasta” comprises strips of the raw vegetable with warm heirloom tomatoes, ovendried crimini mushrooms, fresh basil, and Rayman’s macadamia nut ricotta cheese and grated cashew parmesan, plus gluten-free breadcrumbs. Regulars love the cheeseboard - two kinds of nut cheese with condiments such as blackberry-red wine jelly, pickled apples and mustard seeds, local honey, and tamari almonds. The uniquely delicious desserts include a superb baklava. One local forager calls whenever he has a haul of chanterelles, and Rayman turns them into a special, and every week, another local forager delivers a box of edible flowers that adorn a wide variety of dishes. This is food with a firm modern connection to flavor and to good old Mother Earth. MESA VERDE • 1919 CLIFF DRIVE 805•963•4474 MESAVERDERESTAURANT.COM

Traditional Italian Cuisine

Loyalty has its dangers. Ca’ Dario chef-owner Dario Furlati jokes that if he changed his menu, he might get in trouble with his customers. “They come in for certain favorite dishes,” he says, some of which he’s been serving since the restaurant opened in 1997. Of course, who can blame the chef ’s regulars for holding him hostage to his own cooking? He’s from Lake Cuomo, and his menu reflects his northern roots in classic dishes like homemade ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta and drizzled with sage butter; whole ovenbaked branzino, an identity element of Italian cooking; and a 24-ounce bone-in rib-eye steak that’s a $36 bargain. “Authentic,” Furlati says, describing his food in a word - which is why it never gets old. But while the regulars might own the main menu, Furlati uses the daily specials to introduce rare regional dishes. From Rome, there’s baked gnocchi topped with butter, sage and Parmesan, and from Trentino, he might serve canerderli, a kind of dumpling made with bread, eggs and speck (smoked prosciutto). He also taps local sources for spot prawns, halibut, duck, quail and even venison - maybe grilled and finished in the oven with shallots, garlic and rosemary. Add wines from California, Italy, Chile, France and Argentina, and a dessert list of carefully made classics, and you’ll be defending the menu against change, too. 37 EAST VICTORIA STREET • 805.884.9419 • CADARIO.NET

BOTTLEST WINERY BAR & BISTRO Wine and Beyond in the Valley

Bottlest is a

is one-of-a-kind destination offering perhaps the most unique entertainment experience in the Santa Ynez Valley. The Buellton complex houses Santa Barbara County’s largest winery, a critically acclaimed restaurant with modern farm-to-table fare, and a full bar with live music every weekend night. Guests come in to taste wines available from the vast “Wine Wall,” where automated dispensers pour samples and full glasses of 50-plus wines. For those seeking more than wine tasting, Bottlest offers a full bar open, until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and featuring cocktails, pub fare and live music, as well as an upscale dining menu from 5-9 p.m. daily. Here’s a plan: reserve a table in the high-ceiling main dining room with views into the winemaking facility and the display kitchen. Join friends for a guided tour of the winery - you’ll begin by creating your own personalized bottle of wine, followed by tastings of three reds straight from the barrel and three whites from the stainless steel tanks. Follow that with a three to fivecourse dinner at Bottlest Bistro. Executive Chef Owen Hanavan turns organic produce and fruits, the freshest seafood, and the finest meats into well-conceived, beautifully presented dishes that let great ingredients shine, but with the right amount of flair. Save room for desserts like the Belgian chocolate rice tart, or California bay leaf ice cream.

DINING & DESTINATIONS

FALL/WINTER 2017

Ayda Robana of Om Sweet Mama uses a

potpourri of fresh ingredients to put a North African Twist on classic Seafood Bouillabaisse. This savory medley includes clams, mussels, shrimp, chorizo, aromatic herbs, and local vegetables.

Seafood Bouillabaisse with a North African Twist Serves 4-6

For the sofrito 1 small leek 1 medium carrot 1 large shallot 1 piece celery ½ bulb fennel 1 small Thai chili 2 tbsp. olive oil 2 tbsp. butter 2 tbsp. olive oil ¾ cup diced chorizo seco or pancetta 5 new potatoes, cut into small pieces 1 pinch saffron 1 tbsp. tomato paste 1 tbsp. Tunisian harissa 2 sprigs of thyme 1 handful chopped parsley 2 bay leaves ½ of a preserved lemon, finely chopped 5 cloves garlic, minced 1 tbsp. of salt 5 cups chicken stock 1 cup lobster or clam juice 1 cup dry white wine 1 lb. each of little neck clams, Manila clams, mussels, shrimp 1 cup heavy cream

This recipe is inspired by my travels in southern Spain and North Africa. The rich and f lavorful broth has an Andalusian and Moorish feeling and incorporates two of my favorite ingredients chorizo seco and preserved lemons. It pairs perfectly with a cold White Ale and crispy grilled bread on a cozy winter night. - Ayda Robana

Make a sofrito* from the veggies listed in Step One. Fry in 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once softened and translucent (5-10 minutes) take them out of the large stock pot and set them aside. Add remaining olive oil and fry chorizo and potatoes for another 5-10 minutes until crispy and golden. Add aromatics (saffron, tomato paste, harissa, thyme, parsley, bay leaf, preserved lemon, garlic, salt) and the liquid (stock, lobster or clam juice, wine). Bring to a boil. Add scrubbed and debearded shellfish. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until all the shells have opened. Add heavy cream and stir. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and lemon wedges. *Sofrito is a sauce used as a base in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Latin American cooking. Preparations may vary, but it typically consists of aromatic ingredients cut into small pieces and sauteed or braised in cooking oil.

HUSBANDS AND WIVES From the screenplay by Woody Allen Adapted and Directed by Jonathan Fox October 5 - 22, 2017

Ensemble Theatre Company opens the 2017-18 Season with world-premiere adaptation of Woody Allen’s 1992 groundbreaking film, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay. A witty and urbane comic-drama, Husbands and Wives follows two couples, facing middle age squarely in the face, who find themselves questioning their faltering marriages. Woody Allen’s sardonic humor and razor-sharp insight permeate this story of frenetic coupling and un-coupling.
