ARA the fine art of fine jewelry

ARA Collection is known worldwide for its beautiful, hand-hewn 24k gold jewelry. Stunning adornments for the neck, ears, wrists, and fingers are forged using molded coins, sparkling diamonds in a rainbow of colors, oxidized silver mixed with yellow gold, and an array of brilliant gemstones and other mineral forms collected from all around the world. The origins of ARA Collection trace back to Bodrum, Turkey, the hometown of brothers Cuneyt and Ali and location of the original waterfront retail boutique and workshop. At an early age the creative force behind the now global brand began molding, crafting, and collecting gems and gold and in 1987 the family entered into the jewelry making business. The flagship boutique, located on Coast Village Road in Montecito, is also home to a full workshop, replete with a state-of-theart laser machine. DENIM TAILORING LANDS IN SANTA BARBARA Beau Lawrence introduces his Ace Rivington collection of made in USA denim, tees and sweatshirts, along with a full selection of lifestyle goods and gifts at Santa Barbara’s La Arcada shopping center. N NOVEMBER 7TH, 2013 after arriving home in Carpinteria early for a typical workday, Beau Lawrence announced to his wife Yasmin (who was six months pregnant with their second child at the time), “Sweetie, I just quit my job, and this piece of fabric is our future.” Every brand has a story, and this is how local Men's Lifestyle brand, Ace Rivington, got its start. SANTO MEZCAL brings a welcome infusion of first-rate, authentic regional Mexican food to lower State Street. Located next to the Indigo Hotel, on the edge of the Funk Zone, the newest addition to the Los Agaves family of restaurants is a bit more upscale than its siblings, with table service, a modern interior and a full bar fronting a wall of mezcals and tequilas. Santo Mezcal continues the family tradition of great food and friendly service and even shares some menu items, like the kids favorites taquitos and queso fundito. But while more-complex dishes can be challenging in the fast-paced Los Agaves kitchens, here no one minds waiting a couple of minutes while sharing appetizers or one of the signature ceviches with a beer or a house specialty drink in hand. The food is colorful and delicious, with an emphasis on seafood. Try the tacos with grilled octopus, hummus, avocado and pepper oil; the crab enchiladas; any of the moles, or shrimp with a mezcal cream sauce. PLANTS MEET PLATE Three years ago, Mesa Verde brought a vibrant new world of plant-based cuisine to Cliff Drive. Since then, the casual spot has become a locals’ favorite for delicious vegan food blending vibrant Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. Chef de Cuisine Chris Rayman talks about the need to “build flavor” in vegan dishes, and build he does. Polenta fries come with smoked patty pan squash, white beans, and za’atar, a thyme-based Middle Eastern spice mix with toasted sesame and cumin. Caramelized fried Brussels sprouts team with pickled red onions, pumpkin seeds, fava bean puree, za’atar, sherry vinegar and tamari. Zucchini “pasta” comprises strips of the raw vegetable with warm heirloom tomatoes, ovendried crimini mushrooms, fresh basil, and Rayman’s macadamia nut ricotta cheese and grated cashew parmesan, plus gluten-free breadcrumbs. Regulars love the cheeseboard - two kinds of nut cheese with condiments such as blackberry-red wine jelly, pickled apples and mustard seeds, local honey, and tamari almonds. The uniquely delicious desserts include a superb baklava. One local forager calls whenever he has a haul of chanterelles, and Rayman turns them into a special, and every week, another local forager delivers a box of edible flowers that adorn a wide variety of dishes. Loyalty has its dangers. Ca’ Dario chef-owner Dario Furlati jokes that if he changed his menu, he might get in trouble with his customers. “They come in for certain favorite dishes,” he says, some of which he’s been serving since the restaurant opened in 1997. Of course, who can blame the chef ’s regulars for holding him hostage to his own cooking? He’s from Lake Cuomo, and his menu reflects his northern roots in classic dishes like homemade ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta and drizzled with sage butter; whole ovenbaked branzino, an identity element of Italian cooking; and a 24-ounce bone-in rib-eye steak that’s a $36 bargain. “Authentic,” Furlati says, describing his food in a word - which is why it never gets old. But while the regulars might own the main menu, Furlati uses the daily specials to introduce rare regional dishes. From Rome, there’s baked gnocchi topped with butter, sage and Parmesan, and from Trentino, he might serve canerderli, a kind of dumpling made with bread, eggs and speck (smoked prosciutto). He also taps local sources for spot prawns, halibut, duck, quail and even venison - maybe grilled and finished in the oven with shallots, garlic and rosemary. S E V E N FA L L S This hike is no stroll in the park, but

well worth the effort, especially after a good rain when the water is flowing, and the pools are full. The trail begins on a paved access road and after about a mile turns to dirt. Follow the road just a little more toward the turnoff to Inspiration Point and instead of making the turn to Inspiration Point (which is another fantastic hike) turn right and start making your way up the creek to Seven Falls. The hike is about 3.3 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 800 feet. Parking at the trailhead is limited, with strict parking rules. You must park behind the white line or risk a ticket. potpourri of fresh ingredients to put a North African Twist on classic Seafood Bouillabaisse. This savory medley includes clams, mussels, shrimp, chorizo, aromatic herbs, and local vegetables.

Seafood Bouillabaisse with a North African Twist Serves 4-6

For the sofrito 1 small leek 1 medium carrot 1 large shallot 1 piece celery ½ bulb fennel 1 small Thai chili 2 tbsp. olive oil 2 tbsp. butter 2 tbsp. olive oil ¾ cup diced chorizo seco or pancetta 5 new potatoes, cut into small pieces 1 pinch saffron 1 tbsp. tomato paste 1 tbsp. Tunisian harissa 2 sprigs of thyme 1 handful chopped parsley 2 bay leaves ½ of a preserved lemon, finely chopped 5 cloves garlic, minced 1 tbsp. of salt 5 cups chicken stock 1 cup lobster or clam juice 1 cup dry white wine 1 lb. each of little neck clams, Manila clams, mussels, shrimp 1 cup heavy cream

This recipe is inspired by my travels in southern Spain and North Africa. The rich and f lavorful broth has an Andalusian and Moorish feeling and incorporates two of my favorite ingredients chorizo seco and preserved lemons. It pairs perfectly with a cold White Ale and crispy grilled bread on a cozy winter night. - Ayda Robana

Make a sofrito* from the veggies listed in Step One. Fry in 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once softened and translucent (5-10 minutes) take them out of the large stock pot and set them aside. Add remaining olive oil and fry chorizo and potatoes for another 5-10 minutes until crispy and golden. Add aromatics (saffron, tomato paste, harissa, thyme, parsley, bay leaf, preserved lemon, garlic, salt) and the liquid (stock, lobster or clam juice, wine). Bring to a boil. Add scrubbed and debearded shellfish. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until all the shells have opened. Add heavy cream and stir. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and lemon wedges. *Sofrito is a sauce used as a base in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Latin American cooking. Preparations may vary, but it typically consists of aromatic ingredients cut into small pieces and sauteed or braised in cooking oil.
