WHERE TO EAT

TUCKED OFF STATE STREET in downtown Santa Barbara, D’Angelo Bakery has remained a cherished locale for freshly baked breads, delectable European-style pastries, and mouthwatering madeto-order breakfast and lunch favorites. Proudly operating for 30 years D’Angelo has become a benchmark for artisanally made bread, from Country Wheat Sourdough to Rosemary Lemon and even special weekend-only selections like the popular German Farmers Rye. Pastry fans will also delight in the wide selection available to take to-go or to enjoy on-site, including flaky croissants, delicate danishes and indulgent scones—all made from scratch daily.

WHETHER DINING OUTDOORS on the sunny patio, or inside the casual interior of the restaurant, you can’t go wrong with any of the mouthwatering menu items. Such popular dishes include the savory Huevos Rancheros, the hearty Egg Salad on Pumpernickel Rye, and the sinfully delicious Bananas Foster’s French Toast, which is—you guessed it—flambéd with rum.

D ' ANGELO BAKERY prides itself on being more than just a bakery—it's a family. Many staff members have been part of the D’Angelo team for over 20 years, each contributing their passion and skills to create an extraordinary experience for patrons. D’Angelo’s dedication to freshness and quality ensures that every visit is a special way to start the day.

Taqueria La Unica

JOIN THE FAMILY La Unica is the Luna family’s eighth superbly run restaurant. They also have Santo Mezcal and Flor de Maiz downtown, plus five Los Agaves locations in Santa Barbara, Goleta, Oxnard and Westlake Village.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE The food is intended to “transport guests to the streets of Mexico, where the flavors are bold, the spices are fiery and the tacos are always fresh,” says Luna. “Taqueria La Unica is a celebration of the vibrant culture we grew up with and traditions that inspire our authentic Mexican cuisine.”

GOTTA HAVE IT In addition to the familiar al pastor (pork), sirloin, and pollo adobo (chicken), La Unica offers unusual meats, like cabeza (beef’s head) tripa (tripe), and labios (lips). Don’t miss the enticing appetizers and other dishes, plus house-made horchatas and aguas frescas

TWISTS ON TRADITION La Unica’s chefs draw inspiration from all over Mexico, experimenting to create new spins on favorite dishes. The result: a menu that offers seemingly endless opportunities for exploration. Beer and wine will be coming soon.

A Belmond hotel

LOOK OUT There is, quite simply, no view like El Encanto, a Belmond Hotel. Let your eye roam down the foothills and across Santa Barbara to the harbor, the wharf and the Channel Islands beyond. Take it all in from the veranda or the perfectly situated infinity-edge saltwater pool.

JUST STOP HERE The luxurious gardens emit scents of citrus, jasmine and herbs. Spanish revival architecture soothes. Easy elegance invites relaxation. Enjoy the moon rise. Watch the stars come out. Don’t worry if you find yourself taking a full stop until it’s time to go home.

DON ' T MISS HIGH TEA featuring Ojai brand Magic Hour custom blended teas, herbs and adaptogens for your sun sign, along with perfect sandwiches and lemon-zest scones.

DINE CLOSE TO THE LAND Avocados, tomatoes, and the citrus and herbs in your cocktail come from the garden. The prix-fixe plant-based dinner menu continues the healthful theme. And if you’re hungry after a spa treatment but comfy in your robe, enjoy dinner in the Spa Gardens

ART SPACE El Encanto, a Belmond Hotel has long inspired artists, who have written books and music here, and actors who stayed here while filming at Flying A Studios in the 1920s. Santa Barbara International Film Festival selections are always shown just across the street at the Riviera Theatre

COMMUNITY OFFERINGS Special events open to the public are held frequently, from a monthly immersive “sound bath” by the lotus pond, to meet-the-author sessions with New York Times bestselling authors.

Stella Mare's

French Roots Run Deep

“COME AND ENJOY “ For 27 years, proprietors Kym and Philippe Rousseau have served up the French view of dining as a celebration, a time to relax and talk. “That’s the ambiance we’ve tried to create,” says Kym Rousseau, “I love warm summer nights with the doors open and the candles flickering.”

MULTIGENERATIONAL ENJOYMENTS Stella Mare’s does a LOT of events and has many loyal customers. The result: some couples have celebrated their weddings here, then had baby showers for their children and then dinners to celebrate those children graduating from UCSB.

A MENU FROM THE HEART OF FRANCE Many dishes are inspired by those that Philippe grew up eating in France, such as executive chef and partner Roth Ironside’s innovative tweak of a classic: Cabernet-braised Short Ribs à La Bourguignon.

A CLASSIC DINNER Start with the grilled artichoke, then the endive and apple salad, mussels in a white winePernod cream sauce with braised leeks and shallots served with crispy frites. Finish with chocolate ganache torte with a walnut-pecan-almond crust.

THE DUCK ' S DIVINE People drive from far away for both the crispy duck leg confit with a tangy black cherry gastrique sauce, and for the equally delicious “los patos” (duck) burger, served on a brioche bun with goat cheese, arugula, black cherry gastrique and Dijon sauce.

Stealing the culinary show are certainly the Detroit-style pan pizzas. Featuring creamy cheese and quality ingredients atop thick and fluffy pie crusts, these pizzas are true masterpieces – with witty themes, to boot. Don’t miss the Notorious P.I.E., featuring pepperoni, Burrata and hot honey, or the Jalisco Rodeo, with its rich birria, chorizo and salsa verde combo.

TAPS & TIPPLES

Living up to its name, Corner Tap offers an array of beers on tap, but the drink menu has something for every palate. Be sure to try one of the specialty cocktails, such as the Prickly Pear Paloma or Spicy Blackberry Mint Margarita. Need a caffeine kick? The Lighthouse Martini, infused with espresso from nearby Lighthouse Coffee, won’t steer you wrong.

GET YOUR FILL OF FUN

Enhancing Corner Tap’s appeal are the regular live music performances, sports events and comedy nights, which promise an exciting and entertaining experience for everyone who walks through their doors

Santa Barbara is where the mountains meet the ocean, and a world-class, no-car-required wine tasting experience is just a few steps in almost any direction. Given Santa Barbara’s proximity to the Santa Ynez Valley and the Santa Maria Valley, two of the best wine regions in the US, it’s no wonder that a variety of wineries and tasting rooms now populate hot downtown spots, the perennially poppin’ Funk Zone, and other bustling nearby neighborhoods. And thanks to the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, navigating the wealth of options has never been easier.

Wine tasting in Santa Barbara dates back to 1962 when Santa Barbara Winery first opened its doors in a warehouse near the city’s oceanfront. In 2005 the Trail began to organically develop around this forerunner, and by 2007 eight of the original downtown wineries joined forces to officially create the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail. The goal was to offer everyone from oenophiles on serious tasting missions to novices simply looking for a day of fun the opportunity to learn about and taste the wide range of varietals and styles crafted from the county’s best vineyards.

the trail is populated with dozens of wineries and tasting rooms sprinkled throughout several districts, each with a distinct personality and vibe: the iconic Funk Zone, the historic Presidio Neighborhood, the Haley Corridor, and to the north in the “Goodland” of Goleta, and to the south in upscale Montecito, and laid-back Summerland. Explore the Trail on foot, hop on a shuttle, cruise it by bike, or catch a ride-share. Along the way, be sure to stop and sample the eclectic assortment of restaurants, breweries, cocktail joints, art galleries, coffee bars, retail shops and even a distillery.

ADDRESS SIGNS OF AGING WITH DR. ALLISON PONTIUS

TURNER MEDICAL ARTS’ ALLISON PONTIUS MD IS A BOARDCERTIFIED DOCTOR WHO’S DEDICATED THE LAST 15 YEARS OF HER CAREER TO HELPING WOMEN AND MEN MAXIMIZE FACIAL BEAUTY. A MASTER INJECTOR AND ANTI-AGING EXPERT, HER UNIQUE PONTIUS TECHNIQUE COMBATS AGING EFFECTIVELY AND NATURALLY. HERE, DR. PONTIUS SHARES MORE ON HER APPROACH.

Tell us about your approach to the face and what it involves. I like to thoroughly analyze a patient's face and develop a comprehensive plan first. Then I use conservative injections of dermal fillers to contour and shape the face with the goal of creating a rejuvenated, balanced, and natural look.

Who can benefit from this approach?

Almost everyone can benefit from an objective analysis and facial balancing. Patients in their 40s-50s or with mild-moderate aging tend to see the best results.

Is there any downtime?

There’s very minimal downtime – typically only some mild bruising or swelling. The filler will settle in and you’ll usually see results within a week or two.

What is the relationship you try to have with your patients? Having great, lasting relationships with my patients is incredibly important to me. I want them to trust me to guide them through the

aging process, and to know that I am here to address aging concerns at whatever stage of life they’re at.

For someone who has never visited, what would you say makes Turner Medical Arts stand out?

At TMA, we take a very thoughtful approach to aesthetics. We really try to cater to our patients, cultivating a safe place where they can trust they’re being well cared for. We put effort into going the extra mile to offer the best possible care and expertise.

What are you most excited about in the aesthetics industry?

I’m happy to see a push toward regenerative aesthetics, using different growth factors and bio-stimulators to restore our own body’s collagen and elastin.

THE VAGINA DOCTOR

Duncan Turner MD, founder of Turner Medical Arts, is making sexual health a less taboo topic through his podcast, The Vagina Doctor. Uniting mavericks in medicine and in life, The Vagina Doctor delves deep into anti-aging, sexual health, the historical silliness of medicine, and more. Stream it now on all platforms.

BODY BY POLY

Thinking of removing your implants? Turner Medical Arts’ Breast and Body expert Alain Polynice MD says it’s a growing trend. “I’m seeing patients wanting a more natural look to fit in with their active lifestyles, and I am removing more implants right now than putting in,” he shares. “Some of this is due to breast illness complications with breast implants, other cases are just moving on from their breast implant days and wanting to go back to their body before implants.”

the corner room at Carlyle

AN EXPERIENCE ABOVE THE REST

Carlyle Salon and Style Bar owner Lisa Gaede and her accomplished team of stylists and makeup artists have spent the last 12+ years building the business into a well-respected, full-service hair salon and a much sought-after destination for brides-to-be. An a la carte menu of services— blowouts, haircuts, color techniques, makeup and, of course, bridal styling— caters to each client's specific needs and price points. The elegant salon in the Sevilla Square shopping district radiates an old Hollywood glamour that meets a modern vibe.

The recent addition of the Corner Room at Carlyle, a luxurious private suite adjacent to the main salon, designed especially with brides and their bridal parties in mind, provides the ultimate setting to prepare for the "big day." It's the perfect backdrop for wedding photographers to document the most memorable "getting ready" moments that precede the main event. The beautiful space boasts multiple styling stations, huge windows for abundant natural light and a relaxing seating area where guests can indulge in champagne and pastries for a truly elevated experience.

Brides can select from packages that offer a variety of beverages, sweet treats or even a meal. And you don't have to be "headed to the chapel" to book the room, as it's open to the public and available for freelance hair and makeup artists bookings. It can be reserved by the hour, day or week.

Whether you're in the market for a fresh trim or want to go big and get bangs or get hitched, Carlyle Salon and the Corner Room are here for you. We recently chatted with Lisa at the Corner Room, and here's what she had to say about her start in the industry, great guest expectations and more.

GLAMOROUS GOALS I grew up in Colorado and moved to Santa Barbara in 2000. My husband Peter and I raised our two, now college-bound, sons here. I started in the hair industry 30 years ago but have always been inspired by style, soft colors and classic Hollywood glam. I created Carlyle Salon 12 years ago with this inspiration in mind. My goal has always been to support the growth of new talent in the industry, provide excellent styling services and create a warm, friendly and professional environment for our clients.

BRIDAL PARTY ON Our reputation as a bridal party salon has really grown over the years. We are now on the "wedding map" and have become a hot

destination spot to get ready. This is because our atmosphere offers something beautiful, and our stylists are well-trained and confident in the services they're providing. We do over 130 weddings a year and can accommodate various group sizes. It brings us joy to launch the new room, as it allows for another option that truly makes for a memorable experience.

EXPECT EXCELLENCE Our clients can expect warm, friendly encounters with our staff members, along with top-notch customer service. We want our guests to be more than satisfied—we want them to return again and again!

LOVE AND LESSONS I believe in running the business from my heart and am grateful for what I have learned along the way. I love my staff—everyone who has been a part of our team has made Carlyle what it is today. It's a beautiful thing to build so many relationships, and those relationships have everything to do with our success!

Sands Boutique EXCEPTIONALLY

Sands Boutique owner, Lana Sands, dove into her sustainable swimwear collection a few years ago and last spring opened a one-stop shop for sustainable resort-inspired style. Located in downtown Santa Barbara on Canon Perdido, down a short corridor between State Street and the historic Lobero Theatre, this barely off-the-beaten path is becoming wellworn as more conscience consumers of fun fashion learn about the little brick-paved enclave, which is also home to several other indie shops with like-minded eco-ethoses.

With a commitment to sustainability, quality and ethical highend fashion and several decades of retail and buying experience under her belt, Lana has expertly curated her boutique with a well-edited assortment of swimwear, clothing, accessories, hats, sunglasses and very wearable jewelry— including her own elegant creations—along with body products that are not only luxurious but clean. A modest selection of first-rate men's shirts and shorts rounds out the vacation vibe offerings.

Shopping at Sands Boutique provides the opportunity to look great and feel great about what you are wearing, knowing that you are supporting businesses aiming to make the world a better place. We recently popped into the shop to meet Lana and hear what she had to say about bringing fun back to the retail space, her personal wish list for fall and more.

Sands and Time When I first designed my swimwear collection, Sands Swim, I knew I wanted the line to be eco-friendly without compromising quality and style. The goal was to make sustainable swimwear that also feels amazing on your skin. After the launch and subsequent success of the collection, it felt like a natural step to open Sands Boutique and offer more than just swimwear. As a seasoned buyer and retail manager for over two decades in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, it was time to focus on my mission of offering sustainable, luxury clothing brands for men and women.

Color Us Happy The current retail landscape is saturated with what I've come to call "uniform beige." It's an all-too-common monotone palate devoid of color, vibrancy and energy. I sought to disrupt this status quo with Sands Boutique. I believe fashion should be playful, whether you're traveling across Europe or enjoying a day in our place of paradise. I like to think Sands Boutique has a Parisian vibe and hopefully makes you feel happy when you walk in. It's not just about the clothes; it's about the emotions they inspire.

sustainable style I have always loved Cleobella and its mission to support women and sustainability. I'm also excited to have Dick Moby out of the Netherlands. Their ecofriendly, stylish sunglasses for men and women provide stellar protection with UV400 Zeiss lenses. I also love sharing my personal jewelry brand Mi Playa, which is a client favorite! It's handmade with diamonds, semi-precious stones and a collection of curated pieces.

Currently Coveting I love our clean beauty and home products by Pirette, Heretic and Saint by Ira Dewitt. They're all non-toxic, plantbased and smell like heaven!

Shop and Smile After the pandemic, I wanted to bring the fun back to shopping! There's nothing like leaving the house, trying on clothes and treasurehunting for your soon-to-be new favorites. I enjoy showing customers how to mix high-end pieces with more affordable goods, like pairing a designer jacket or purse with a vintage David Bowie graphic tee or comfy jeans topped with your favorite accessories.

Local Love I have always felt connected to the ease and comfort in my hometown. Maintaining relationships with my local clients and welcoming visitors makes me happy, and I strive to provide a service that embraces that and makes the lives of my customers happier and healthier.

MONTECITO COLLECTIVE A

Virginia Barlow and Daniel Heald, the owners of the lifestyle shop Montecito Collective, are on a mission to boost body positivity and conscious consumption within the fashion space. All too often, clothing purchases are driven by an unrealistic effort to look a certain way without regard to comfort or where or how the goods are made. Montecito Collective offers a welcome respite from this construct with a carefully edited selection of women's and men's goods that hit the sweet spot where casual, classic and ontrend meets comfort. Launched in 2020 as an e-commerce business selling candles, the company soon evolved into a clothing collection and then a clothing store. The brand's philosophy embraces the notion of "reinforcing true beauty" and impacting the fashion industry by redefining beauty standards and offering apparel that everyone feels comfortable wearing.

In addition to the in-house collection, the boutique, located in the heart of Montecito's Coast Village Road retail and restaurant scene, houses an impressive array of women's ready-to-wear from premium denim brand Pistola, Splendid and other contemporary designers, along with a sizable section dedicated to Eberjay— best known for their indulgent, yet affordable loungewear and lingerie. Men can shop tailored looks from designer Jason Scott, Naadam cashmere sweaters and more. The retail offerings are elegantly woven together by a common thread of fairlypriced, high-quality pieces focusing on either woman-owned or environmentally-conscious brands that are body-positive and include a wide size range.

Customer service is always a top priority, as the Montecito Collective team takes a personal approach with customers by finding pieces that truly fit each individual. Their robust following is a testament to the friendly relationships established with local customers and weekend visitors alike.

Here, Virginia and Daniel share a few of their top fall picks for stepping out in elevated, casual and comfortable Santa Barbara style.

“We want people to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin by accentuating their true beauty through our clothing. Growing up, there was this idea that women had to fit a certain beauty standard that seemed unattainable. I want to change this mindset by instead embracing one's true beauty and unique identity.“

We also carry wide-brim suede hats in a variety of colors, a fun selection of greeting cards and, of course, our exclusive candle collection that started it all.

Charlotte's of Santa Ynez

ALL THAT GLITTERS IS SILVER

Those who say diamonds are a girl's best friend have never been to Charlotte's of Santa Ynez, where the stones are semi-precious, but the extraordinary collection of vintage turquoise and silver pieces for both women and men is wholly magnificent. In her light-infused showroom, proprietress Charlotte Becerra has curated a veritable retail mine of highly collectible indigenous, artisan-made silver and turquoise rings, earrings and necklaces, along with a tight edit of hats, antique rugs, pottery and sophisticated Western art. Frequent trips to the Southwest and impromptu stops along Old Route 66 keep the inventory fresh. Charlotte heeds the call from other collectors and colleagues who provide tips about recently discovered troves of turquoise treasures.

The shop's client base encompasses loyal locals, low-key A-list "industry types" and "regulars" from all over the state. As a case in point, one customer enjoys an annual stay at The Alisal and always has a Charlotte's stop at the top of her list. The shop is also on the radar of accomplished equestrians and cowboys who shop from the recently expanded selection of men's goods, including bolo ties, belt buckles, hatbands and cufflinks. Thanks to Charlotte's bona fide vaquero husband, Ramon Becerra, the entire back wall of the shop is dedicated to high-quality new and vintage horse tack—headstalls, reins, bits, chaps and other gorgeous goods— that'll put a giddy-up in your step. We recently made the short (40-minute), scenic and oh-so-worth-it trip over the pass and popped into the showroom between wine tastings to chat with Charlotte. Here's what she had to say about the origin story of the shop, owning a Santa Ynez Valley business and more.

SILVER WITH A SIDE OF SADDLES My husband, Ramon Becerra, had a saddle shop called Santa Ynez Saddlery for five years, which quickly became the largest saddle shop in California. As the shop grew, it became too big for us to manage, so I took the best things out of it and opened my boutique. That is why my shop is a combination of silver bits, romal reins, spurs and other equestrian accouterments, as well as vintage sterling silver jewelry, primarily from the U.S. but also Mexico, Italy and other countries well-known for their jewelry.

SIMPLY SHINE My criteria for curating the showroom is simple: I'll buy it for my boutique if it's shiny and good quality. When I was young, my mother had a chain of houseware stores, and when I opened a "toy corner" in two of her shops at age 12, she told me that it was my job to deliver a good quality product at a fair price to my customers. I have never forgotten that.

CURRENTLY COVETING Oh goodness, there are so many great pieces in the showroom, each unique, so it’s hard to choose a favorite! I have some great Navajo cuff bracelets from the 1940s that are amazing but too big for my wrists, so they stay in the boutique.

LOCAL LOVE The best part of owning a local business in the SYV is the people here. We are the "local's town" of the Santa Ynez Valley, so we know our customer base well; they are our neighbors and friends, our kids go to school together, etc. This Valley is full of wonderful people, and it's a joy to go to work each day and have them pop into the boutique. As my husband says, "If there is a heaven, Santa Ynez is the gateway."

“I am incredibly grateful to have Charlotte's in Santa Ynez, best known as a locals “quaint, western“ town. It attracts a certain type of person that appreciates craftsmanship and quality. I love my customers and I try to make sure that everyone has a smile on their face when they walk out of my door.“

TOP HATS

“My atelier is very welcoming and has a friendly ambiance. Our customers are the backbone of our business, so they have our undivided attention the moment they walk through the door.“

Owner, Edgar Alvarez Vargas

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: The owner in his studio showroom; a colorful stack of wool hat bodies; custom-shaping with the tools and techniques of the trade; embellishing with silk ribbon and feathers for a custom finish; a hand-painted sample adorned with gold thread embroidery, silk fabric and turquoise beads.

The American Dream is alive and well at Grand Central, as is the opportunity to customize the hat of your dreams. Owner and hatmaker

Edgar Alvarez Vargas, who immigrated from Mexico in 2016 and launched his unique business in 2019, collaborates with customers to create wearable works of art. The showroom, which shares a space with Santa Barbara Shoe Repair, is also a working studio where traditional hatmaking techniques from the oldschool era are fully embraced. Vargas and his team of artisans pride themselves in offering customers a personalized experience whether they've booked a private design consultation or walked in off the street. Customers seek Grand Central's creations for various reasons—some want to commemorate a special occasion, pay tribute to a loved one or family culture or have a one-of-a-kind statement piece.

Be it a classic cowboy, a fashionista with flair or a rock and roll rebel look, it all starts with an idea and the selection of a traditional Western hat body—made from some of the world's finest wool. The chosen hat is steamed, stretched and custom-shaped for a perfect fit. Original designs may be achieved with a variety of "next-level" adornments—fine silk taffeta ribbons, feathers or charms—and embellished with artfully splattered paint or intricate embroidery. Hats are strategically nicked with a sharp blade and patinaed with flames for a well-worn look.

The atelier also boasts a wall of handmade ready-to-wear hats and highquality, handwoven Panama hats from Colombia and Ecuador. And for those who have an old favorite or family heirloom hat that needs a little love, Grand Central offers full renovation services. Over the past year, the brand has continued to expand with placements in a growing number of exclusive boutiques across the country, a second location in Mexico and a collaboration with legendary bootmakers Lucchese. Here Vargas shares how he honed his hatmaking skills, the tools and techniques that make each design distinctive, the importance of customer service and more.

LIVING THE DREAM I immigrated to the U.S. in 2016 to pursue the American Dream, leaving my wife and two kids in Mexico. Grand Central was founded in 2019 because I wanted to create a product that allows me to work for myself so I can spend more time with my family.

LIFE'S LESSONS Becoming a hatmaker was one of the biggest life lessons I have ever had. When I created the brand, I realized that making hats required a lot of craftsmanship. I learned the basic skills from another hatter and eventually started making my own hats to offer something different and unique.

MAGIC HATS Grand Central offers an impressive variety of customizing techniques, including hand shaping, dying, embroidery, leather accents and more. Every hat is unique, from a traditional hand-shaped hat to a fully embellished piece.

GLOBAL GOODS I believe in supporting the local economy and, whenever possible, sourcing American-made premium products or goods from U.S. suppliers. Our wool originates in Bolivia, Argentina and Australia, and we source beaver 100X and rabbit fabrics from Ukraine and silk ribbons from London and Tokyo.

PASS THE HAT I had the opportunity to refurbish an 80+-yearold hat passed down from generation to generation. It originally belonged to the great-grandfather, then the grandfather and finally the grandson who asked me to restore it. It was very rewarding to bring this heirloom hat back to life after so many years of use.

ACE RIVINGTON BRAND ON A RUN

Meet Beau Lawrence, storyteller, designer and founder of men’s and women’s premium denim and lifestyle brand Ace Rivington. Lawrence’s jean line—the bread and butter of the brand— set sail in California in 2013 using Italian-milled Candiani Denim, one of the most sustainably-focused denim mills in the world. The initial denim assortment was quickly followed by other straightforward, high-quality goods. Signature Homespun French Terry sweatshirts, classic and branded graphic tees, plaid and flannel button-ups and hats soon rounded out the burgeoning collection.

Given the cool vibe and the low-key, but superior customer service served up at the storefront, located on State Street in the historic La Arcada Plaza shopping center, guests are inclined to relax and hang out for a while. Sitting alongside the Ace Rivington goods is a carefully-selected supporting cast of outside designers, a broad assortment of Diadora Heritage footwear, printed bandanas and USA made socks to style customers from head to toe. An ample selection of travel bags, wallets and backpacks from Santa Barbara leather workers Parker Clay spreads a little local love.

The Ace Rivington Team in the shop is on deck to custom-tailor jeans for customers who are always pleased to learn their denim purchases are backed with lifetime warranties. And if the spool on the sewing machine isn’t spinning, then Lawrence is likely spinning a yarn about the shell on the wall that was once rowed in the 1948 London Olympics, the handmade maps and banners adorning the walls or one of the many other meaningful props and decor items that breath a spirit of adventure into this brand experience venture. Read on to get to know a bit about the man behind his beloved brand.

Tell us a bit about yourself and Ace Rivington

I’m Nashville born and was brought up around the storytelling of Hollywood. I came to Isla Vista to “cause trouble” after high school and then left to build a career as a global denim designer. In 2013 my wife, Yasmin, and I settled in Carpinteria and launched Ace Rivington in our garage on Kickstarter.

What is the inspiration behind the brand?

Ace Rivington is a character I made up who embodies the spirit of adventure found in travel, food, culture and escape. The thread that ties Ace Rivington's story and our collection together is effortless style—something very hard to achieve, but iconic when done right.

Congratulations on the launch of your women's line! What sets Ace Rivington apart from the rest of the denim market? Years of effort in perfecting our women’s high-rise classic straight-leg fit and a global exclusive on our Italian comfort stretch fabric (that won't grow on you throughout the day), along with our free custom tailoring and a lifetime warranty on every pair puts Ace Rivington denim in a very unique market position.

Besides your own, is there any collection or item on the store floor you are currently coveting?

Diadora Heritage is an important brand partner for us. Born in 1948 in Caerano di San Marco, Italy and grown from sport, it has been incredible to re-introduce Diadora's authentic, rooted-in-history footwear styles–from the B.560s that Jennifer Capriati took on the world wearing to Bjorn Borg's B. Elites at Wimbledon in 1978.

What is the best part of owning a local business in downtown Santa Barbara "Where did you have dinner last night...and where are you having dinner tonight?" That's my first question for just about everyone who walks through our door. Knowing we have a town full of incredible creators (food, art, music and otherwise) who care about their craft as much as we do is what makes being here so special.

What's the most important thing potential customers should know about your business?

We're not happy until you are; whatever it takes, we will put in the effort. Our goal is to make sure you have the best denim experience you've ever had, and if we happen to catch you at the beginning of your stay in our great town, we're happy to guide your food path too!

santa ynez valley

Uncorked!

For a memorable day trip that feels worlds away from the verdant flora and sandy beaches of Santa Barbara, head to the Santa Ynez Valley, or the "SYV," as the locals call it. A mere 35 miles north of SB, via a scenic coastal route along Highway 101 or over the San Marcos Pass on Highway 154, discover the six thriving towns of the Valley—Los Olivos, Ballard, Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Alamos. These communities, all within a short drive of each other and each with its unique character and a relaxed and authentic vibe, attract visitors from all over the world. With more than 120 wineries, world-class wine, incredible food, shopping, outdoor adventures and special events, planning the perfect itinerary can be overwhelming, so we've removed the guesswork. Here’s our take on the top 10 list of things to do, see, sip, savor and shop, along with a few of our favorite stops for an unforgettable experience in the Santa Ynez Valley.

1. WORLD FAMOUS WINE The Santa Ynez Valley is famous for its wineries. A unique, transverse mountain range funnels cool air from the Pacific Ocean, creating micro-climates and terrains that result in one of the most diverse grape-growing regions in the world. Take a day to explore the wineries and see the vineyards firsthand.

2. SOLVANG SELFIES This quaint little village, famous for its Danish bakeries and architecture, is filled with photo-ops. Perfect the art of the selfie in front of the giant red wooden clog or one of windmills.

3. CULINARY CRAVINGS There are so many great places to dine in the Santa Ynez Valley it can be hard to choose! For serious foodies desiring a fine dining experience, families looking to fill up the kiddos or those seeking a quick bite between wine tastings, the SYV culinary scene has got it covered.

4. CULTURAL PEARLS Drop in and visit one of the Valley's museums to discover local history and lore, nature inspired art, vintage and rare motorcycles, one of the west coast's largest petroliana collections, the rich history of the Chumash culture and more.

5. PARTY ON From food and wine-driven celebrations and familyfriendly festivals to painting workshops in the vineyards, live music and world-class theatrical productions under the stars, the Santa Ynez Valley experience is synonymous with fun!

6. LOCAL LIBATIONS Sample some of the superb award-winning local craft beers, or tour a few SYV microbreweries and artisanal distilleries to see brewmasters put their unique and innovative spin on handcrafted beer and spirits.

7. HOME SUITE HOME Santa Ynez Valley hotels offer an intimate and distinctly local experience— some with a unique Danish feel, some pamper with casual luxury, while others offer modern glamping. With over 30 unique lodging properties, the Valley has a price and vibe suitable for all.

8. THE GREAT OUTDOORS Take in the fresh air and spectacular views and enjoy some of the rolling hills, live oak trees and beautiful countryside. Picnic, hike, play at a local park or hop on a horse to find your Valley adventure!

9. TREASURE HUNT With specialty shops in almost every town, you're bound to discover a hidden treasure. The many stores, boutiques and galleries that line the streets of the Santa Ynez Valley are well-stocked with local artisanal goods.

10. SAY SPAAA Combine the pleasures of wine country with the holistic benefits of spa treatments and wellness activities for a perfect pairing. The natural beauty and slower Valley pace make it an ideal place to restore mind, body and spirit. Unplug for the day, or book a stay at an area inn that combines accommodations with spa services

A Winter Squash Galette

Kick off the season with this simple savory tart that packs some serious fall flavors! Pair it with a dark rosé or chilled light red wine. Add an arugula salad for a light lunch, or enjoy it as a starter.

Instructions

Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and sauté for about 20 minutes until golden brown and caramelized—season with ½ teaspoon of salt and set aside.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Wash and de-seed the winter squash and cut in one-inch thick half moons. Then place it in a large mixing bowl and toss with the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons of browned butter (recipe below), 1 clove of microplaned garlic and 1 tablespoon maple syrup. Place the squash single-layered on a parchment-lined baking sheet and cook for 20 minutes or until golden and tender—season with the remaining ½ teaspoon of salt. Allow to cool before topping the pastry.

In another small frying pan, brown 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat, add sage leaves, gently cook for 1-2 minutes and set aside.

Roll out one sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and transfer it to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Use a fork to pierce several rows of holes to aerate the pastry. Scatter the cooled caramelized onions and roasted squash, leaving ¼ inch border on all sides of the pastry. Top with goat cheese, sage leaves and grated pecorino Romano or Parmesan cheese.

In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg. Use a pastry brush to "paint" the border of the puff pastry with the egg wash. Bake at 420 degrees on the middle rack for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

HOW TO BROWN BUTTER:

Put the cut up pieces of butter in a skillet over medium heat, stir occasionally until the milk solids separate and turn golden brown and there's a slightly nutty smell (usually about 4-5 minutes for 2-3 tablespoons).

HOMETOWN TOURIST

My husband, Ben, and I love to go to Stearns Wharf for micro-vacations and pretend to be tourists visiting for the first time. It’s a great way for me to get out of the everyday grind and feel my gratitude for calling S.B. home.

My Santa Barbara

Madi Manson, artist, entrepreneur and owner of Loud Flower Art Co, loves to play tourist in her hometown. When this creative entrepreneur is not busy screen printing messagebased tees and totes and running makers markets, she’s out and about exploring all the area has to offer. Read on to learn more about Madi and her favorite things to do, see and experience in S.B.

DIVE IN

My go-to coffee spot is Santa Barbara landmark and staple Elsie’s Tavern, a dive bar at its absolute best. Cash only, incredible staff, great coffee, strange murals, Top Ramen, Pop Tarts and free pool—what more could you ever want?

ALL THE RIGHT STUFF

Art From Scrap is such a creatively magical place! There are always wild and strange new things to explore. Visiting Nicole and the rest of the crew is a great way to reconnect with the joyful part of creating that can sometimes get left behind when making art is your job.

Name - Madi Manson

Profession - Founder and owner of Loud Flower Art Co

Years HERE. - I was born and raised in Ojai and have lived in Santa Barbara for seven years.

I am an avid podcast listener. If you ever need recs, I’m your gal.

My first business in town was Snack Gallery, a vending machine that sold art—hoping to make a grand return this fall!

I love reading and watching anything Fantasy.

SALUTE!

Eating Arnoldi’s homemade pasta on the patio next to the bocci ball court and drinking a Negroni with friends on a summer evening is perfection.

CREATIVE COMPANY

I love all the incredible makers markets we have here. There’s one almost every weekend! I host one myself every 2nd Saturday in the garden across from Dart Coffee in the Funk Zone. Markets are the lifeblood of the creative community here in S.B. I am honored to participate in and host these events.

TAKE A DIP

Thanks to our wet winter, the swimming holes along almost every hike in town are perfection! I love to get up into the hills for a quick plunge before I head to my studio for my days of designing and screen printing.

Loud Flower Art Co makes emotionally screen-printed apparel to help folks engage with their mental health and be their most authentic selves, all with a little goofiness. Follow @loudflowerartco for the latest designs.
