Broad Street Oyster Company
Get to know Santa Barbara's newest kids on the block.
BROAD STREET OYSTER CO. Come for the lobster rolls that rival any served on that “other” coast, and stay for the rest of the menu, which features raw oysters, whole spiny lobster, fresh local uni, caviar service and other deep sea delights. Founder Christopher Tompkins first tested the waters with a successful foray into the pop-up world which lead to a permanent home in Malibu in 2019 and fortunately for Santa Barbara seafood lovers, a second location just behind Shaker Mill on State Street. The vibe here is surfer 80's-style with a blazing blue and yellow neon sign next to the walk-up window that heralds the bright, fresh flavors and good times to come. 418 State Street, 424.323.4401, broadstreetoyster.com DYLAN STAR Funk Zone go-to for women’s and men’s clothing and accessories, as well as gifts and lifestyle goods and locals’ fave Dylan Star has added another location in the heart of Downtown Santa Barbara in Paseo Nuevo shopping mall. The shop, located in Victoria Court in the newly designated Arts District of Santa Barbara, showcases items for the home, highlighting both traditional and contemporary craft with products that strike a balance between beauty and utility. Their collection, which specializes in baskets from around the world, also includes handmade ceramics, woodwork, clothing and design books, and the best collection of international design magazines outside of LA. 1221 State Street, 805.324.4971, domecil.com

WYLDE WORKS What happens when a group of artists, beekeepers, fermenters and creatives get together? At Wylde Works, the result is unique, delicious and authentic drinks crafted from nectars and botanicals foraged from Santa Barbara’s mountains. We’re talking beer-style meads, honey wines and hard jun kombuchas made with the likes of elderberry and hibiscus and local orange, lavender or wildflower honey. Lucky's Steakhouse
THE BEAT GOES ON
SINCE 2000, this inviting destination has been serving pure pleasure in the heart of Montecito. THE THING THEY DO: You don’t go to Lucky’s for trends; you go for great drinks, superb classic steakhouse fare, great wines and the kind of genuinely friendly and attentive service that can seem to have disappeared during the previous century. ONE SPOT, MANY PLACES: Enjoy brunch in the courtyard, the patio or the parklet; an elegant supper in the dining room; or drinks (and access to the full menu) at the casual bar while catching a (muted) game on TV. PRIME TIME: That’s anytime at Lucky’s, where aged USDA prime beef reigns in many forms — as filets, as a bone-in New York, as a Delmonico or a 28-ounce Porterhouse for two, among many other choices. The seafood, including fresh abalone and live Maine lobster, is outstanding. CLASSIC HARMONY: The Beatles had Sgt. Pepper’s; here, it could be “Lucky’s classic gastronomic band,” which includes favorite accompaniments like shrimp and crab cocktails, an iceberg wedge salad, creamed spinach and eight potato dishes. THE SPECIALS: Lucky’s daily specials will warm your soul, from Monday’s chicken pot pie with morels, to Thursday’s Market Street meatloaf and Saturday’s prime rib with Yorkshire pudding. SAME AS EVER, BUT BETTER: During the pandemic, Brophy’s upgraded its décor, improved its acoustics, expanded its music, and connected with all the app-based delivery options.

EARNING CUSTOMER LOYALTY: Too many waterfront restaurants rely on location alone. Not Brophy’s. “We take it seriously, and we’re in it for the long game,” says operating partner John Bennett. “We want to continue to make sure we keep giving customers what they want.” THE SAME, A BIT SOUTH: The slower pace of the pandemic allowed the family to put the final touches on sister properties Brophy’s and On the Alley in the Ventura Harbor. OTA — THAT GOOD CALI FEELING: Order at the counter of this super-casual spot, then pull up a picnic bench outside to enjoy fish tacos, salmon salad, a fried chicken sandwich or other choices from the something-foreveryone menu.
THE 35-YEAR-OLD waterside favorite and its younger sibling continue to offer great food, friendly, caring service and world-class views. FAVORITES AS YOU LIKE THEM: From amazing succulent fish ’n’ chips to crisp and tender fried calamari, to the signature cioppino, steamers, crab cakes and fresh local fish filets, Brophy’s doesn’t dress it up; it just does it right. FARMER BOY If you grew up in Santa Barbara’s San Roque neighborhood, you know Farmer Boy restaurant - it’s the classic American diner with all the standards. The fresh take on this beloved local diner maintains the essence of the original. 3427 State St., San Roque Plaza, 805.687.6584 SPRING/SUMMER 2022
GOING FOR IT: The display cases brim with inventive baked beauties. Guehr calls them “eye candy,” while pastry chef Jordan Pilarski says that his goal is “to make classic things modern by pushing the boundaries.” TWEAKING WHAT YOU LOVE: All the familiar favorite flavors are here, but different. “We might make a pear dessert that’s colored and shaped like a fresh pear,” Guehr says. “Our desserts have multiple textures and layers that, we hope, leave guests in awe and wanting more.” BOLD ADVENTURES: Try the chanterelle, black truffle and ricotta Danish; the baklava croissant combining pistachio-almond paste and nuts with rose and orange waters; or the signature “candy bar,” a dazzling stack of feuilletine cocoa-nib crunch, brownie Bisquit, caramel, and a hazelnut milk-chocolate mousse. BREAKFAST STYLE: Whether dining outside or seated in the dining room’s white leather chairs, your breakfast here can include lemon-ricotta cheese blintzes, a classic French omelet, a blue crab crepe or brioche French toast, among the inviting French-California mix. Wine Cask
P R E S S PAU S E . . . R O C K YO U R S E N S E S !
REDONE AND READY: One meaning of “intermezzo” is a pause between musical movements. After its long pause, Intermezzo re-opened recently as a light-filled, energy-infused, vibrant reinvention of its former, familiar self. HEY, PUNK: For many, the play lists and the black-andwhite rock photographs will recall the ‘80s punk ethos. It’s intentional. O’Neill played bass during Boston’s punk explosion, and while he no longer hits the stage, he hits all the right notes in echoing that iconic era. A GREAT SPACE: Partner and designer Diane Garmendia imagined the new “rock n’ roll elegant” Intermezzo, where the tall, now-operable industrialstyle hopper windows usher in mountain views, and courtyard and sidewalk tables bring the capacity to nearly 200. THE WINE CASK IS NEXT: With Intermezzo now filling with locals and out-of-town visitors, look for the Wine Cask to make a big splash following its remodel, expected to be completed during summer 2022.

SHELLING OUT AND BEYOND: Given the name, it’s no surprise that Broad Street serves up enticing offerings like oysters, clams, uni, crab and lobster. And don’t miss the novel combination of caviar with potato chips. PARTY ON, GARTH: “We’ve immediately felt welcomed into the Santa Barbara community,” says proprietor Christopher Tompkins, adding, “What could be better than enjoying pristine seafood in a town right next to the beach? We’re in paradise, and the party’s just getting started.” FRESH, GOOD: Menu signatures include the seafood tower (with samples of their best raw dishes), crab claws, their beloved, iconic and, well, perfect lobster roll, awesome fish ‘n’ chips and a downright delicious burger.

LOCAL SPIRIT: The beach-party vibe of the Malibu original (it started life as a popup) continues in Santa Barbara. The colorful décor features elements like a shark head and fishing nets, and when the fun gets started, no one will tell you to “keep it down.”

THE HEART OF A FAVORITE
Toma
THE X FACTOR: What’s the formula for restaurant success? For nine years at Toma, one key ingredient has been bartender Raul Alarcon. He was here on day one — and for the 15 previous years when the restaurant was Emilio’s. TOMA STAPLES: Toma is known for great food-and-wine pairings, regional European dishes, fresh local seafood, farmers market produce and, above all, a warm welcome that makes everyone feel like family. Then, there are Raul’s signature cocktails. MIXING WITH AGAVE: Raul has invented many food-friendly tequila and mezcal-based libations, such as the Salud to Baja (Casa Nobles organic blanco tequila, mango puree, fresh lime and lemongrass syrup, shaken over ice) to go with crispy-skin Skuna Bay salmon. RAISE THIS GLASS: Raul’s favorite original? The Vida Old Fashion. The combination of reposado tequila, Vida mezcal, serrano simple syrup, chocolate, and orange bitters over ice is, he says, “balanced and smoky with a little spice.” Try it with the grilled Spanish octopus starter!

Wharf TASTE YOUR WAY THROUGH WINE COUNTRY—IN THE HEART OF SANTA BARBARA!
J. Wilkes
Santa barBARA
is where the mountains meet the ocean, and a world-class, no-car-required wine tasting experience is just a few steps in almost any direction. Given Santa Barbara’s proximity to the Santa Ynez Valley and the Santa Maria Valley, two of the best wine regions in the US, it’s no wonder that a variety of wineries and tasting rooms now populate hot downtown spots, the perennially poppin’ Funk Zone, and other bustling nearby neighborhoods. And thanks to the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, navigating the wealth of options has never been easier. WINE TASTING in Santa Barbara dates back to 1962 when Santa Barbara Winery first opened its doors in a warehouse near the city’s oceanfront. In 2005 the Trail began to organically develop around this forerunner, and by 2007 eight of the original downtown wineries joined forces to officially create the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail. The goal was to offer everyone - from oenophiles on serious tasting missions to novices simply looking for a day of fun - the opportunity to learn about

Co-founders Professor Paul Hansma and Alex Proctor pictured above and below is the hand held device for the Bone Score™ procedure.
Until now, bone-health assessment has been one size fits all. Bone Score™ ushers in a new era of accurate, individualized care.
1999, UC Santa Barbara physicist Paul Hansma set out to determine what made an abalone shell so strong, despite being composed of 97 percent calcium carbonate, or “chalk,” and only 3 percent organic material, or “glue.” This small amount of organic glue, Hansma discovered, makes the abalone shell 3,000 times stronger. It turns out that this same glue is found in other calcified materials, including human bones. Several years and many clinical trials later, that discovery has led to FDA clearance of an invention that promises to usher in a new era in bone-health assessment. Roughly 60 million Americans are at risk of suffering a “fragility” fracture, the result of low bone density, a measure of how much bone there is, or a deficiency in bone quality, i.e. how good the bone is. About one in three women and one in five men will suffer a such a fracture, which often results in permanent impairment or even death. For decades, a bone-density scan was the only widely available method for assessing bone health. But it provides a limited picture, estimating only bone density and missing the important quality component. As a result, people can have weak or fragile bones and also normal bone density. Conversely, someone with low bone density may have perfectly healthy bones, as seen in certain athletes, such as cyclists and swimmers, as well as in petite women. Lacking a way to measure bone quality, bone-density assessments involve a lot of well-intended guesswork. That is changing, thanks to a new tool that provides physicians with previously missing insights into the quality of the bone. Currently available only in Santa Barbara, the simple, accurate assessment tool is attracting health-minded tourists from across the country. The procedure (Bone Score™) is the clinical refinement of Professor Hansma’s glue discovery. The quick, radiation-free, in-office measurement involves a small, acupuncture-like tip that passes through the skin to press against the shinbone. A sensor records the softness of the bone and outputs a simple score, providing physicians unprecedented insights into the quality. The procedure can be performed regularly, either to monitor a patient’s reaction to drugs or other interventions, or as part of a regular checkup. Bone Score™ is available at Turner Medical Arts, Alta Orthopaedics, Discover Health and Montecito Concierge Medicine. To find a clinic and learn more, please visit bonescore.com/learn. WO R K I N G S T U D I O and retail showroom Jess Conti Leather Goods is the kind of place that feels like a rare find - old-school, authentic and inspired. Here, you'll find L E AT H E R G O O D S leatherworker and long-time local Jess Conti hand-crafting the one-of-a-kind luxe leather bags, belts, backpacks, jewelry and decor items that populate her small but impressive boutique - impressive because every single piece is made just on the other side of the counter at her hide-stacked and tool-loaded workbench. The designs and patterns are original and hand-cut from cow, American Bison or deer hides. Of course, this allows for made-to-order customer collaborations that yield fabulous things like buttery suede leather bucket bags, custom-fitted belts and perfect wrist wraps. We recently caught up with Jess in her unique shop and workspace, which is housed in the back of a Funk Zone "OG" Quonset hut building, and here's what she had to say about her early artisan roots, source of inspiration, new creations and love of owning a local business.
JESS CONTI
Genesis of Jess
Tell us a bit about yourself and the origin story of your business. I learned the basics of sewing and pattern construction from my grandmother, a dressmaker. After college, the job market was lean, and I took a part-time job with a tailor. I was introduced to an industrial sewing machine and had an opportunity to work on some leather pieces there. It just really piqued my interest and developed from there.
Form & Function + Fashion
What drew you to leatherworking and leather as a medium, and what inspires your designs? I'm inspired to create functional pieces that still feel fashionable. I'm also really enjoying creating fun one-off pieces. I want to make things that people actually use in their everyday life. To me, the greatest compliment to my work is knowing people use their bags.
Letting The Leather Sing
How would you describe Jess Conti Leather Goods style? I like to think of my style as accessible. I aim to emphasize the natural beauty of the leather in my designs without overdoing it on hardware or excessively complicated design features.
Ready to Wash & Wear
Are there any new designs that you are especially excited to produce and introduce into your collection right now? Yes! I'm working on a new collection of washable suede wraps, ponchos and capes, as well as a specialty line of these silhouettes in dreamy soft cowhide leathers.
Funk Zone Fervor
What is the best part of owning a local business in Santa Barbara's Funk Zone? I love the zeal of the Funk Zone; it feels like it has a pulse all its own tucked right here in Santa Barbara. I am surrounded by creative people, and I get to welcome travelers and locals alike into my working studio, where I make each piece by hand.

STAR-STUDDED STAPLE > No wardrobe is complete without a versatile leather jacket or two. For an easy, classic day look, I love to pair them with jeans, sneakers, a tee-shirt and a casual bag or layer your leather over a dress for an evening out. Add some jewelry, a small clutch bag and a great pair of heels and voila - you're ready to go!
MAKE MINE CASUAL WITH A SIDE OF BLING > Santa Barbara living is so conducive to casual dressing. Most days, my go-to is a good pair of denim and a soft sweater layered over a perfect tee. I sometimes elevate a casual look by adding accessories like this studded headband, glittery sneakers or crystal cuff. They provide the perfect finishing touch.
"I wanted to build a place where women of all ages and shapes could feel heard, secure and leave feeling better about themselves." Erica Brown on the inspiration behind Dylan Star

Erica Brown, the owner of Dylan Star, infuses both fun and functionality into the shopping experience at her clothing and lifestyle boutiques. Both locations - one in the heart of the Funk Zone and the other in downtown Santa Barbara's Paseo Nuevo shopping mall - are brimming with a diverse trove of on-trend goods, including women's and men's clothing, accessories, gifts and lifestyle items. According to Erica, creating an environment that boosts a customer's confidence when they look in the mirror is a top priority for her and the team of in-house stylists. The team also has a reputation for routinely converting even the most skeptical of shoppers, um, especially those who frequent the men’s department, if you catch our drift. Dylan Star also hosts private parties for up to ten guests if you fancy shopping with friends. And speaking of parties, the Funk Zone location often hosts parking lot events with pop-ups and live music. There's so much to discover at Dylan Star - looks for everything from dressing for a day of wine tasting or winding down at home to beachy days or business meetings. Here, Erica shares a small sampling of her favorite seasonal finds that embody effortless Santa Barbara style. 110 ANACAPA STREET & 317 PASEO NUEVO 805.242.8086 • DYLANSTAR.COM

MARISA MASON T H O S E W H O H AV E Y E T
to discover the wonders of Marisa Mason Jewelry located in downtown Santa Barbara's Arlington Plaza are in for a delightful treat. The showroom and boutique, replete with beautiful hand-plastered walls (by the designer herself), antique display tables sourced from her father's Montecito-based antique gallery and displays constructed by her woodworker husband, is exquisitely populated with not only her eponymous collection of hand-hewn, brass, silver and gold creations but also a melange of other artisan jewelry, accessory and lifestyle collections. With a strong aesthetic in her DNA (more on that in the Q and A), Marisa Mason is no stranger to good design. This interior designer turned self-taught, advocational jewelry maker and now career jeweler has built a solid brand that effortlessly weaves a soulful thread of themes into a diverse yet cohesive assortment of both fine and more affordable fashion jewelry. Read on to learn about Marisa Mason's full circle back to Santa Barbara, her love of all things handmade, the beauty of owning a small business and more.
JEWELRY
Tell us a bit about yourself and the origin story of Marisa Mason Jewelry.
I grew up here in Santa Barbara with small business owning parents and always had the idea that I would start my own business. About 11 years ago, I started my jewelry line on a shoestring with no formal training and very little money! I had a tiny open studio in Oakland's Temescal Alley that acted as a type of retail store as well. I loved what I was doing, worked round the clock, and fairly quickly, we hit our stride.
What inspires and informs your design aesthetic and motifs?
I grew up as the daughter of an antique dealer here in town (Michael Haskell), and our house was filled with design books and antiquities. I always loved the character, textures and imperfection of so many of these handmade objects and the story they told. I think that informed my aesthetic growing up.
How do you go about curating other designers and goods to sit beside your collection?
I love finding outside designers who are doing something unique and outside of my personal area of design practice. I love curating the balance that can come from pairing one-of-a-kind, handmade items alongside everyday staples and easy giftable goods. Jewelry stores can feel formal and uninviting, and we are creating a casual environment in which folks feel at ease shopping.
What new designs or collections are you excited to introduce into the mix right now?
I am really excited about expanding my fine jewelry collection, engagement and wedding offerings. For outside lines I am loving Celine Daoust. Her jewelry integrates gorgeous unique stones with symbolic, one-of-a-kind designs that are even more stunning on. Clients have been excited about our permanent jewelry offerings as well - gold chain bracelets and anklets welded on- delicate with no clasps!
It seems you've come full circle, having grown up in Santa Barbara, spending time away and now planting your roots here. What drew you back to the area?
We have two young daughters and wanted to raise them near family, in a place where they can play outside and go a whole day without wearing shoes. My husband and I love trail running, surfing, and generally being outdoors, so coming back home has been a dream.
What is the best part of owning a local business in downtown SB?
I love our location- we are surrounded by incredible small businesses and have a view of the historic Arlington Theatre. The beauty and ease of being in our neighborhood rubs off on you, and our clientele always seems to be in a great mood!

#SHOPSMALL TALK
In a world of big-box stores and corporate chains, our local business owners are working hard to preserve the distinctive character of Santa Barbara. These independent establishments reflect our community, bring variety to our retail experience and vitality to our neighborhoods.
BEAU LAWRENCE Founder/Owner of Ace Rivington
Tell us about your design process and how you source your denim. The first step of my design process is driven by practical use. It doesn't belong in my closet if I can't wear it as part of my Santa Barbara uniform. Next, the fit and fabrication have to be perfect (which honestly can take years of working and re-working a product until it is just right). All of our denim is sourced exclusively from Candiani Denim Mill in Italy.

friends who have had the same crazy idea to build a company, and we support each other. We also all happen to make some pretty cool goods. What cut and wash are you rocking right now? Lol...it has been "dad vibes" all the way for me over the last few months of living in our Slim Taper Medium Vintage wash. It's going to be a bit of a time warp back to the early 2000s for me when our "Cowboy" Athletic Straight in Dark Clean becomes my daily driver as we head into summer. For you personally, what is the most important thing about being a business owner in Santa Barbara? Santa Barbara is a magical place sandwiched between the ocean and the mountains, and the magic isn't just the land; it's the people who live here and those who visit our special world. As a business owner in town, I look at it as my responsibility to make sure folks learn about the best that we have to offer through food, drink, experience and obviously customtailored denim.

SMALL SIZE DOES MATTER I am especially excited to offer a selection of small-batch, locallymade products, including these tasty shrubs and this line of organic artisan apothecary oils.
“When customers shop at Folly, they are supporting over 30 local and Californiabased artists and shopping ethically-made goods from selected artisans from Mexico and India. My customers love knowing they are getting small-batch, handcrafted goods that are made to last and to be handed down to future generations.” Aylssa Remington, owner of Folly
CURATED FOR KIDDOS The kid's corner is filled with magical treasures like felted mushrooms handmade by local artist Mary Stanley, beautifully illustrated books and the most cuddly lions, tigers and bears - oh my!

owner of home decor and lifestyle boutique Folly. With charming yet humble beginnings in a 1957 Boles Aero trailer, this petite emporium is now thriving and in full bloom with roots firmly planted in downtown Santa Barbara’s Arlington Plaza. Almost entirely curated with vintage wares, handmade goods from wellestablished local and international artisans and other singular surprises, the light-filled location houses items that run the gamut from fanciful to practical and most often both. The merchandise mix includes home decor, art, children’s gifts, a tight edit of clothing and jewelry, along with some smallbatch hot sauces, shrubs and apothecary items. Upon entering the shop, visitors are treated to a visual feast of color, texture and pattern, masterfully merchandised by Alyssa and her talented friend, Roe Warren. It’s no wonder an exquisite, yet unpretentious sense of home permeates the inspiring space, as Alyssa only brings what she truly loves into the store instead of speculating on what she thinks other people want. This strategy is likely what generates some of the magic of Folly that allows antique clay bowls and just-knitted baby bonnets to sit side by side in perfect harmony - and by all accounts, it’s proving to be a very successful one. Here Alyssa highlights a few of her favorite finds. 1324 STATE STREET SUITE E • 805.770.3328 @FOLLYHOME

RANSFORMATIONAL, INVITING, AND JUST SO BEAUTIFUL
is what you hear when friends and family discover this new kitchen. The homeowners and Sophie Paolino, REED INTERIORS designer, worked in close collaboration to ensure every detail’s perfection. The homeowners love to cook and entertain, and this design is exactly their dream come true. From the choice of appliances featuring state of the art Gaggenau ovens, to the flawless integration of the refrigerator, freezer, hood and cooktop - nothing was left to chance. The choice of Italian lacquer cabinets with handle-less doors created an elegant and aerial touch. Choosing the same indoor/outdoor large format tile achieved a seamless integration with the outdoors. The final touch was matching color tones of the living room and bar area, which were redesigned by Sophie uniting the spaces as one. It takes experience and skilled workmanship to arrive at this result, and this is what the team at REED INTERIORS strives for every day. REED INTERIORS

SPRING/SUMMER 2022
AH, THE SIMPLE PLEASURES OF A PICNIC, BE IT A SUNNY DAY AT THE BEACH, A GRASSY PARK OR ALFRESCO JUST A FEW STEPS OUT OF YOUR BACK DOOR. WITH A BIT OF PLANNING, THESE DO-AHEAD RECIPES MODERNIZE PICNIC CLASSICS LIKE FRIED CHICKEN AND COLESLAW WITH NEXT-LEVEL TANGY FLAVORS AND JUST THE RIGHT HINT OF HEAT.
KO R E A N F R I E D C H I C K E N 1 whole chicken (ask your butcher to cut it up in 8 pieces, removing the backbone and specify “bone-in, skin-on”)
In a heavy Dutch oven or cast-iron skillet, heat 1 ½ quarts of neutral vegetable or sunflower oil. Allow it to heat up to about 360 degrees (usually 5-7 minutes) while you dredge your chicken in the flour mixture.
MARINADE FOR THE CHICKEN 3 - 4 cloves of garlic 4 tablespoons fish sauce 1 tablespoon sriracha 1 small bunch of cilantro 1 tablespoon coconut sugar ¼ cup fresh squeezed lime juice 2 scallions, chopped 1 stick of grated lemongrass Blend all of the above ingredients in a food processor. Place the chicken and the marinade in a resealable bag and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours, preferably overnight. When you are ready to cook the chicken, remove from the fridge blot the excess marinade off the chicken using paper towels. Let the chicken come to temperature on a baking sheet or cooling rack for 30 minutes before frying.
Fry the chicken in batches, browning on each side before turning. Total fry time is about 10 minutes per batch (don’t overcrowd the chicken in the pot!). Remove chicken when browned and put it on a paper towel-lined rack. Once you’re finished frying all the chicken, remove the paper towels, place the rack on a cookie sheet, and bake in a preheated 425-degree oven for about 10 minutes. While the chicken is in the oven, whisk together 1 tablespoon honey and 2 tablespoons of tamari or soy sauce. Once the chicken comes out of the oven, brush this mixture onto the chicken and serve.
ON THE SIDE BOK CHOY SLAW 4 or 5 baby bok choy, chopped into ½ inch pieces 1 small head of Napa cabbage, shredded 4 scallions, chopped
SMASHED CUCUMBER SALAD 8 small Persian cucumbers (pound with a rolling pin or meat mallet) DRESSING 2 tablespoons fish sauce 1 tablespoon coconut sugar 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 1 clove garlic, grated The juice of 2 limes, squeezed 1 tablespoon chili sesame oil ¼ cup mint, chopped ¼ cup cilantro, chopped
MISO DRESSING 1 small shallot 2 cloves garlic 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 1 tablespoon coconut sugar 2 tablespoons fish sauce 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger 1 heaping tablespoon white miso ½ cup of vegan mayonnaise (or mayonnaise) Mix the above dressing ingredients in a food processor or blender. Toss the vegetables with the dressing and allow to marinate a bit. Optional - garnish with some toasted sesame seeds or more sliced scallion. ABOUT
Put all of the dressing ingredients in a bowl and whisk together. Pour the dressing over the cucumbers and marinate for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.

FAVORITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITY:
Running along the waterfront in the early morning clears my mind. I run out on the pier and then through the harbor. Seeing all the familiar faces and the stunning scenery always gives me that “I get to live here” moment.
MY SANTA BARBARA
MY GO-TO Jill Johnson, long-time local and owner of Funk RESTAURANT: Zone anchor Loveworn, knows her way around We are fortunate to have such diverse, top-notch, locally-owned culinary hot spots town. Having spent almost four decades living in in SB. I love trying new restaurants but the Santa Barbara makes Jill somewhat of an expert on classics are my faves; brunch and dinners Lucky's, anytime at Brophy Bros. and all things SB! Here she shares a bit about herself, at Arigato is perfection. Say "hi" to Daryl a little native knowledge and a few of her favorite when you're there! things to do, see and experience in our slice of paradise. BEST PLACE FOR A SUNSET COCKTAIL: Thanks to Santa Barbara’s south-facing beaches we have breathtaking sunsets! I love to join friends upstairs at the waterfront restaurant OKU for stunning views, Old Fashions and their amazing sushi lollipops - try them!
BEST THING ABOUT LIVING IN SB:
Everything - the natural beauty, stunning architecture, the rich history and culture. The mountains are so comforting, like living in a hug, while the ocean feels vast and liberating. Also, Santa Barbara is small enough to run into someone I know every day and big enough to meet someone new every day, including some of the nicest people from all over the world!

PLACE TO PLAY TOURIST IN MY HOMETOWN: The Funk Zone is full of energy, creativity, innovative boutiques, art galleries and the tastiest restaurants and wine bars - it’s the best! My other favorite touristy activities include a sunset cruise off the coastline or climbing to the top of the clock tower in the historic courthouse for the 360-degree view.
TOP ACTIVITY TO SHARE WITH FRIENDS:
Anything beach-related! It’s the perfect place to decompress, be in nature, and hang out. I love the smell of the ocean and could walk for miles in the sand and waves. Cruising along the coast with friends in my ’69 Barracuda convertible is also tops of my list!
Name: Jill Johnson Profession: Owner, LOVEWORN Years in SB: 38 > When I was a kid I moved to Santa Barbara from a tiny town in Illinois and felt like I had won the lottery! I remember seeing my first palm tree and tasting my first avocado here. > With my best friend Wallace, I opened my first retail store in Santa Barbara in 1991. It’s a dream come true to continue to be creative every day and make a living at it. > I love to travel and explore other places and countries, but no matter where I go and how wonderful the experiences are, I am always happy to come home. > My passion is vintage denim. It’s the canvas of life through so many generations and iterations. It tells a story, and I love the history and the smell of old indigo.
