Greg Miller 48" X 48"
Since 1984, Elizabeth Gordon Gallery has been an esteemed presence in Santa Barbara's art scene, showcasing a diverse collection of contemporary works while supporting both established and emerging artists Our gallery is a space where creativity flourishes, and artistic excellence is continually celebrated
Greg Miller is a neo-pop artist known for blending language, story, and image to foster a dialogue between the audience and the painting. Embracing the term “contemporary cave painter,” he creates realistic images based on films, old magazines, and books. Inspired by the 1974 film noir Chinatown, Miller’s recent painting TRUE portrays a woman in a heroic light. Unlike other artists, Miller aims for clarity in his work, leaving little room for interpretation
Alberto Valdés, although a private artist, is one of the greatest Chicano artists of his generation. Born in El Paso Texas and raised in Boyle Heights, he was deeply influenced by Chicano culture and the Civil Rights Movement. His abstract figures, characterized by bold contours and colors, draw from pre-Columbian designs and modernist pioneers like Picasso and Rufino Tamayo.
Join us on September 5th, 2024 from 5-8 pm to witness Valdés’ never-seen-before artwork, the show will run through October 5th at regular gallery hours.

Chef Caudillo is a stickler for highquality local ingredients, including those in Terra cocktails. The Sexton Margarita, for instance, begins with ultra-pure artisanal mezcal and includes citrus, hibiscus and other botanicals.

THERE’S JUST SOMETHING
ABOUT A BURGER: Caudillo’s version is made with Wagyu short rib and chuck, “new age” American cheese, jalapeño-and-caramelizedonion “jam,” housemade pickles, tomatoes, and lettuce on a brioche bun. No wonder it’s the most popular item on the menu. MAKE IT

THIRD WINDOW BREWING CO.
Brews and burgers with a connection to the land
SINCE OPENING IN
2016, Third Window Brewing Co. has become a beloved destination for craft beer enthusiasts and food lovers alike. Cofounded by Kris Parker, this Santa Barbara brewery blends old-world, Belgian craftsmanship with a locavore ethos, driven by a desire to craft exceptional beer and create fantastic experiences around it all.
Growing up in a wine family, Parker learned the importance of terroir and artisanship from a young age, instilled by his winemaker father, Eli Parker, and grandfather, actor-turned-vintner Fess Parker. In 2006, eager to explore the art of brewing, Parker received a gravity-fed all-grain home brew system as a birthday gift. He soon set up a makeshift brewery in an abandoned winery, where he and a friend experimented with brewing Saisons and obscure German beers, laying the groundwork for his future in craft brewing.
Now, at Third Window, Parker continues to hone his craft, producing a diverse range of acclaimed brews from inside The Mill, a historic barn and feed mill from 1904. For Parker, the brewery is more than a business; it embodies the pursuit of perfection over profit, with a constant focus on enhancing the quality of the brews each year. “I love Belgium’s Trappist breweries and the ethos around their work, making beer for hundreds of years from a viewpoint that isn’t strictly about optimizing profit,” says Parker. The name “Third Window” is a nod to the legendary story of St. Barbara, symbolizing a spirit of defiance and staying true to one’s beliefs. This philosophy is evident in Third Window’s commitment to crafting unique, high quality beers using foraged ingredients and grains grown on the Parker family ranch. “We’re dedicated to pursuing terroir in beer, growing our own barley, wheat, and soon, hops,” shares Parker.
In addition to Third Window’s diverse beer selection, ranging from lagers and hoppy Pales to IPAs, Lambics and Witbiers, visitors will find a variety of beer-friendly dishes to enjoy within the airy indoor-outdoor space. On the menu: Ranch oak-fired sourdough pizza, bbq's each weekend (Texas-style Wagyu brisket (limited quantities) on Saturday and Santa Maria tri-tip on

Sunday) and the brewery’s iconic smashed cheeseburgers. “During the pandemic, my wife and I made smashed cheeseburgers at home using Wagyu from the ranch,” shares Parker. “When we reopened the brewery we started serving these smashed cheeseburgers.”
Though Parker aims to “make the best beer in the world,” it’s his connection to the land that truly defines his approach and commitment. “Making these beers with grains we grow on the ranch and using those grains to feed the Wagyu cattle, creating flour and sourdough from the ranch’s microflora and utilizing downed red and white oak for our barbecue and pizza—this participation in what feels like a family evolution is why we do this,” he says. “The terroir of it all is what keeps me coming back every day.”
The legendary story of St. Barbara depicted on the Third Window Brewing Co.’s labels. From right to left: St. Barbara as a young woman; St. Barbara locked in the tower by her father; St. Barbara’s father beheads her because she put a “Third Window” in her tower representing her faith; St. Barbara’s father is struck by lightning for his injustice; St. Barbara is bestowed into sainthood.

Santa Barbara is where the mountains meet the ocean, and a world-class, no-car-required wine tasting experience is just a few steps in almost any direction. Given Santa Barbara’s proximity to the Santa Ynez Valley and the Santa Maria Valley, two of the best wine regions in the US, it’s no wonder that a variety of wineries and tasting rooms now populate hot downtown spots, the perennially poppin’ Funk Zone, and other bustling nearby neighborhoods. And thanks to the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, navigating the wealth of options has never been easier.
Wine tasting in Santa Barbara dates back to 1962, when Santa Barbara Winery first opened its doors in a warehouse near the city’s oceanfront. In 2005, the Trail began to organically develop around this forerunner, and by 2007, eight of the original downtown wineries joined forces to officially create the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail. The goal was to offer everyone from oenophiles on serious tasting missions to novices simply looking for a day of fun the opportunity to learn about and taste the wide range of varietals and styles crafted from the county’s best vineyards.
The trail is populated with dozens of wineries and tasting rooms sprinkled throughout several districts, each with a distinct personality and vibe: the iconic Funk Zone, the historic Presidio Neighborhood, the Haley Corridor, and to the north in the “Goodland” of Goleta, and to the south in upscale Montecito, and laid-back Summerland
Explore the Trail on foot, hop on a shuttle, cruise it by bike, or catch a ride-share. Along the way, be sure to stop and sample the eclectic assortment of restaurants, breweries, cocktail joints, art galleries, coffee bars, retail shops and even a distillery. For more info, go to

FABULOUS FOUNDATION
ANNA JANELLE JEWELRY
Meet Guest editor Anna Janelle Cardenas, founder and owner of beloved local brand and boutique Anna Janelle Jewelry. This talented jewelry designer, who has over a decade of design experience, adores adorning customers with her sophisticated and wearable jewelry.
Cardenas’s elegant yet playful boutique showcases her selection of 14K yellow gold-filled and semi-precious jewelry. Alluring gemstones like labradorite, rainbow moonstone and Herkimer diamonds find their way into the detailed designs, all of which are meticulously handcrafted in Santa Barbara. You'll also find a tightly edited luxury line of 14K solid gold, precious gems and diamond jewelry and a new collection of shining sterling silver pieces.
The brand's dedication to au courant offerings like permanent jewelry and a mix-and-match customizable collection reinforces the unique and interactive Anna Janelle Jewelry shopping experience. The recent addition of a charm bar— the first of its kind in Santa Barbara—allows customers to unleash their inner designer to build one-of-a-kind charm necklaces and bracelets. Shoppers will also find an enticingly curated assortment of beach hats, artisan-made bags, hair accessories, crystal points, jewelry organizers, candles, cute greeting cards and other giftable goods. Here, Cardenas shares some tips for building a jewelry wardrobe, a few of her favorite new pieces and gift ideas for the holiday season.
ENDLESS LOVE
Build a jewelry wardrobe starting with a few everyday pieces—a classic chain necklace, bracelet, stud earrings and hoops. Then, add layers of different necklace lengths and chain sizes, introduce pops of color with semi-precious stones or different metals to your “arm party” and infuse your burgeoning collection with a few personal or meaningful touches like charms and birthstone.
Our Permanent Jewelry Program offers a unique way to wear fine jewelry without a clasp. Chains are custom-fitted and microwelded for a seamless look. People often get them to pay tribute to meaningful milestones or to honor special bonds with loved ones.

MICROBLADING SANTA BARBARA
The world of beauty esthetics is vast, but at Microblading Santa Barbara, it’s all about the brows, and for good reason. As one of the most prominent facial features, eyebrows accentuate the eyes and help define the shape of the face. And for those of us who were not born with lush brows or perhaps never fully recovered from the aughts pencil-thin trend, Microblading Santa Barbara offers a beautiful brow-building solution.
In 2016, owner Kamren Morton-Smith opened her stylish Funk Zone studio, combining her artistic background and passion for perfect brows with the skills she acquired while training with leaders in the permanent makeup industry. Since then, Morton-Smith and her colleague, Camille Harris, have framed hundreds of happy faces with elevated eyebrows.
During a recent visit to Microblading Santa Barbara, we had the pleasure of chatting with the busy owner between appointments. Read on to see what she had to say about her start in the brow arts, a bit about the process and advice for the microblading-curious.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you entered the beauty esthetics and microblading worlds. I've been an artist my entire life and have been obsessed with eyebrows since I was a teen. I never thought it was possible to combine the two to form a career, but here I am, and I'm as passionate as ever!
Clockwise from top left: Owner Kamren Morton-Smith with brow artist Camille Harris; A blonde client before and after; Morton-Smith mid-procedure; the selection of customizable inks to match any skin tone or hair color.
REASONS TO CONSIDER MICROBLADING
Creates a more youthful appearance
Cuts down on “getting ready” time
Provides facial balance
There are many different types of permanent makeup. What sets microblading apart from other forms of cosmetic tattooing? Microblading is unique in that it mimics real hair instead of makeup. We create 3D hair patterns by following your natural hair and matching the coarseness and color (with customized pigment) of your eyebrows, giving you a natural result. This method can be done both manually (blade) or with a machine (single needle). Discomfort is minimal, as a numbing cream is used to ensure a relatively painless procedure.
Is every person a suitable candidate for the procedure, or are there specific criteria for determining who would benefit best? Microblading works best on dry, healthy skin. However, with the latest nano technique (machine instead of a blade), ALL skin types are suitable for hair strokes. Your artist will determine which method is best for you.
Do you have any advice for people who desire a little brow enhancement but are hesitant to try permanent makeup? Come in for a consultation. We will draw on the "hairs" the same way we tattoo them. Once our clients see this, they immediately fall in love and want to move forward.
Is there a particularly rewarding situation or memorable person for whom you provided services? I have many clients who experience hair loss due to chemotherapy, Alopecia, and trichotillomania (pulling out hair). There is no better moment than revealing new brows to clients who finally feel like themselves again.
What is the best part about owning a business in Santa Barbara? I am incredibly proud to be a Santa Barbara native, and owning a small business in this beautiful town is a dream come true. I love our community; I wouldn't be where I am today without it.

LET'S ROLL To keep the endless summer vibes alive, I always have a bottle of this roll-on fragrance in my bag for a mellow hit of coconut, amber, orange and tonka bean. And our natural, vegan Starry Night soaps smell as good as they look!
Meet Guest Editor Jules Kramer, founder and owner of local lifestyle boutiques Jules by the Sea. With one location in the Funk Zone and the other Uptown on State Street, Santa Barbara shoppers don't have to go far to find dreamy home decor, beachy clothing and Jules's handmade collection of ocean-inspired jewelry. Here, she shares what's new in the stores, a few top holiday present picks and tips for capturing her captivating version of Santa Barbara living.
ABOUT JULES BY THE SEA: Jewelry designer Jules Kramer describes her Santa Barbara lifestyle brand as a little boho, a bit of Baja and a touch of rancho. The magical melange of goods available at her two lifestyle galleries— including everything from crystals, blankets and leather-bound journals to candles, bath and body treats and more—is built upon the foundation of her handmade jewelry. The business, which started as a humble atelier in 2012, has since evolved to include a small collection of 14k and diamond fine jewelry, a premium collection of sterling silver and gold-fill with semi-precious stones and a casual line of "fashion jewelry" for price-conscious customers. Jewelry takes center stage and is supported by a tight selection of gifts, housewares and permanent jewelry services at the OG Jules By the Sea boutique, which is located in a 1950s Quonset hut alongside other local artisans a few blocks from the ocean. With easy access, plentiful parking, convenience for popping in for a quick gift, the newer spacious Uptown location houses a more extensive selection of gifts and decor items and boasts the square footage to host painting, jewelry-making classes, birthday parties and friend gatherings. Look for seasonal goodies like wreaths and ornaments during the holidays, and head to the website for more information about Jules By the Sea's curated individual and corporate Santa Barbara-styled gift baskets.
NO CARE REQUIRED These little handmade-in-Mexico metal cactus sculptures thrive in the living room or patio and add a nice pop of color to any space.

BUNGALOW WEST
Meet Guest editor Brooke Hansen, owner of Bungalow West—a unique shop filled with an eclectic mix of casual chic and sometimes cheeky goods that embody the essence of coastal living. Here, she shares some of her favorite picks for cozy dressing, gift-giving, and keeping the beach vibes going year-round.
ABOUT BUNGALOW WEST: Owner Brooke Hansen had over 25 years in luxury design and beauty manufacturing, catering to resorts, luxury hotels, salons and retail stores when she started designing candles with a specific vintage cabana vibe. Her burgeoning candle business led to a year of hosting successful pop-up events and taking in honest customer feedback. This prepared her and her husband, Don, to take a leap and launch their beloved brick-and-mortar boutique, Bungalow West, when the perfect downtown State Street location became available. The initial line of candles quickly evolved into a fully curated mix of East Coast preppy and West Coast lifestyle goods featuring exclusive in-house designs and global gifts, resulting in a masterful blend of elegance and casual comfort. And although the boutique's beach vibes are strong, there are plenty of sophisticated goods that work well for a landlocked lifestyle.
Each visit to Bungalow West promises to be a unique experience. The enticingly merchandised open-air alcove at the store entrance, which harkens back to the business's outdoor market beginnings, sets the tone for the fun found inside the shop. The welcoming and joyful atmosphere of the space is reinforced by the playful selection of home decor, clothing, gifts and games that range from perfect picks for those with a well-developed sense of humor to sweet sentiments on ceramic mugs and uber-soft baby blankets and sweet board books. Olfactory treats in the form of clean-burning candles and aromatherapy bath steamers abound, along with the tactile pleasures of cushy linen pillows and super-soft sweatshirts. There's also jewelry, tea towels, coffee table books and even cute tees for the doggos you adore.
The mingling of international visitors, loyal locals and friendly staff members often creates the air of an impromptu party. Pop in and experience the charm of Bungalow West, where all are welcome, and no invitation is required.

SLICE OF LIGHT GALLERY
Since its inception in the summer of 2023, fine art photographer J.K. Lovelace's downtown gallery, Slice of Light, has been a magnet for astrophotography and nature photography enthusiasts and all visitors who appreciate the beauty of his world-renowned, uniquely shot landscapes, seascapes, nightscapes and deep sky art. His stunning images make the inaccessible accessible, the real surreal and the ordinary extraordinary.
Lovelace's photographs, all of which are available as limitededition metal and giclée prints, reinforce his mastery of visual storytelling and drive home the notion that every picture is worth a thousand words. The business offers free virtual fine art consultations so clients can preview what potential purchases will look like in their own space, as well as professional delivery and installation services and custom framing for gallery prints.
Between photoshoots in far-flung locations across the country, Lovelace occasionally holds in-house talks that both delight and provide insight into his artistic process. Slice of Light joins other local galleries in celebrating monthly First Thursday evenings of art and culture-centric activities. This is a great time to mingle, have a glass of wine and meet the welcoming staff. Explore this low-key, high-reward gallery, take respite from the sometimes chaotic outside world and immerse yourself in the stunning "worlds" gracing these gallery walls.
We were fortunate enough to catch up with Lovelace recently, and here's what he had to say about his inspiration, what catches his eye, planning the perfect shot and more.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your start in photography and Slice of Light Gallery: I have pursued landscape and astrophotography since 1988 when I studied under local photography legend Everett Weinreb. Slice of Light Gallery is an idea I have had for decades, and I am delighted it is finally a reality.
With subjects ranging from deep space to lava flowing from the Earth's core, what "scape" most inspires you? I don't have a favorite. Though each genre requires specialized techniques, landscapes, nightscapes and astrophotography are all a continuum. Landscapes are lit by the nearest star, our sun. Nightscapes feature our Earth beneath distant stars, galaxies and Earth's Moon. It's all about this moment in this unique spot within the vast universe.
When you head out with your camera, do you have a specific vision for "the shot," or do you leave space for serendipity and spontaneity? I do a lot of scouting, looking for something that catches my eye. Then, I plan when the lighting will be optimum, the moon will be in the correct position, etc. When I return for the planned shoot, I often discover even better shots nearby.
Of the thousands of moments you capture, what do you look for when curating the fine art images that eventually fill the gallery space? I want our clients to own original prints that not only look beautiful in their homes or offices but also spark appreciation and conversation with guests. I want images that impart emotion, narrative, a sense of wonder or mystery, calm or maybe even confusion, pieces that the owners can perceive in new ways as time passes.
What is the best part about owning a business in Santa Barbara? Just being in Santa Barbara, there's no place like it. But also, it's a very diverse community with a variety of visitors. “This simple but delectable pairing is perfect for a cozy Fall evening or festive holiday gathering. I especially love to make this apple galette as it reminds me of Fall on the East Coast, where I spent my childhood.”
– Chef Ayda Robana

Elegant, Indulgent & Easier Than Pie
Apple Galette + Mulled Wine = A Cozy Pairing
For the Dough
(This recipe makes two pie crusts, so you can wrap and freeze one to have on hand or make two galettes at a time.)
2½ cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted European-style high-fat butter straight from the fridge
1 heaping tablespoon of Greek yogurt
½ cup ice cold water
Pulse the dry ingredients in a food processor. Cut the butter into dice-sized cubes, add to the dry ingredients in the food processor and pulse until it is broken into small pea-sized pellets. Then add a heaping tablespoon of yogurt, and while pulsing, slowly stream into the feed tube the ice cold water until the dough comes together. It will still be a bit dry, but don’t be tempted to overdo it. Immediately shape the dough into a ball, cut it in half, wrap the separate halves tightly in cling wrap and refrigerate for 6 hours or overnight.
Galette Assembly and Baking
After the dough has been in the freezer for at least 6 hours, lightly flour your work surface and rolling pin and roll the ball into a somewhat even 13-inch circle. Then, transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Spread the applesauce over the dough thinly, leaving a 1 ½ inch border around the edges. Cut the apples in half, remove the core and cut into thin slices (about ten per half). Arrange the apple slices on the dough, again leaving a border around the edges. Fold up the edges of the crust to hug the apples. Brush the outside of the crust with egg wash. Sprinkle turbinado sugar over the eggwashed crust. Sprinkle the cinnamon and sugar mix over the apples, and be sure to get some in the grooves. In a saucepan, melt down the apricot jam, add the lemon juice and set aside.
Bake in a preheated 425-degree oven for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and brush the jam glaze on top of the apples. Lower the oven temperature to 375 degrees and bake for another 20-25 minutes.

JUST RIGHT The best thing about living in SB is that it’s not too big or too small. After growing up in Northern California and living for a while in LA, I think it’s the perfect union of the
My Santa Barbara
Get out and about with local waterman, photographer, artist and new gallery owner John Baran. When this “wave whisperer” is not out on dawn patrol, you’ll find him in his studio transforming the magical moments he spends in the woods and on the water into nature-inspired art. Here, he shares a few of his favorite haunts for superb sunsets, local landmarks, divine inspiration and more.
TOURIST TIME Heading to the Harbor, hitting Brophy Bros. and then walking along the breakwater always makes me feel like a tourist in my hometown. It’s great people-watching, and you never know what you might see swimming by out in the ocean.
OUTDOOR OFFICE When I am not working, I am somewhere in nature—the ocean and mountains are my “office.” I feel truly blessed, as almost every morning, I am in the water catching the first waves of the day with my camera.
NAME: John Baran
PROFESSION: Artist and Photographer
YEARS HERE: I am a 20-year resident of Santa Barbara
• Mother Nature is the inspiration for all the art I create
• From September to February you can find me in the ocean somewhere along the Santa Barbara coast at sunrise
• I have shared space with tiger sharks, orcas, elephant seals, rhinos, lions, wolves and grizzly bears
SUPER SETS There are so many incredible sunrise and sunset spots in SB, but I really enjoy driving up the coast to catch the long, rocky, cliff-laden shoreline with colorful clouds. Thousand Steps at low tide is also incredible.
TASTY ROTATION You can usually find me at either Lama Dog Tap Room, Handle Bar Coffee or Dart Coffee. The coffee and drink selections are great at these places, but what really makes them special are the employees and community.
