What started as two beekeepers (and business partners) on a mission to save the bees and educate the community on their importance has blossomed into SANTA BARBARA HIVES . The recentlyopened second location, in the former Instrumental Music space on Upper State Street, is an enchanting general store filled with healthy and sustainable products that are good for skin, body and mind, all made from honey, beeswax and other natural ingredients, many of which are made in-house or locally. Additionally, you’ll also find a well-curated selection of eco-friendly lifestyle and home goods. The store is also a resource for beekeepers offering "nucs" of bees, queen bees, supplies and other equipment. WHERE TO EAT
Tre Lune
ONE FROM THE HEART What makes it work is simple: “It’s not a gimmick. It’s from the heart,” Montesano says. Of the hundreds of loyal customers honored with wall-mounted mini-chairs bearing their name, he adds, “It’s as much their place as ours.”
A LOCAL HANG Many visit Tre Lune daily, even twice a day. They return for the familiar ambience, reminiscent of something out of the Godfather; lovingly prepared food from an approachable, wide-ranging menu—and the genuinely warm welcome that never gets old.
THE ‘YES” BUSINESS “We like to say yes,” Montesano says. “If a customer wants something that’s not on the menu and we have the ingredients, we’ll make it.”
HOUSE BRANDS The house-label olive oil served with the bread is from Tuscany; the balsamic vinegar, from Modena. All the wines are from Italy, except the house pinot noir, rosé and pinot grigio, all from Santa Barbara County.
STONE COLD GOOD Save room for another house brand: Black Market Gelato. Flavors include espresso, salted caramel, and vanilla bean; among the sorbets are passion fruit, lemon and strawberry. Don’t forget the heavenly tiramisú.
A sign by the front door has those words, and for twenty years, Gene Montesano has made his Italian dining room a welcoming haven beloved by many.

Los Arroyos
QUALITY MEXICAN FOOD FOR 24 YEARS
SERVING
Since 1999, Los Arroyos has earned a loyal following for its fresh, homemade Mexican food, which is served with friendly hospitality at its three locations in Santa Barbara, Montecito and Goleta.
FAMILY TRADITIONS Many of the dishes at Los Arroyos were inspired by owner Tony Arroyo’s mother, who shared her secrets for making the most flavorful, authentic Mexican food when Los Arroyos first opened its doors 24 years ago. Today, those original recipes continue to be the foundation of the menu.
ALWAYS FRESH “Fresh” and “homemade” are more than just buzzwords at Los Arroyos, they’re a way of life. Special care is taken to ensure everything on the menu is as fresh as possible, from the made-from-scratch salsas and salad dressings to the freshly prepared rice and beans.
MOUTHWATERING FLAVORS There’s a reason Los Arroyos has been in business for so long: the food is consistently delicious. The Arroyo Molcajete, a substantial dish of chicken or steak, chorizo and nopales in a smoky salsa; Maria’s Enchiladas, featuring organic Jidori chicken and salsa verde; and the Chili Relleno stuffed with queso fresco all remain fan favorites.
A TRUE FAMILY OPERATION Los Arroyos is a true family owned and operated restaurant, but to Tony Arroyo and his kin, “family” extends beyond the bloodline. The majority of employees have been with Los Arroyos for over 10 years—a few of whom have been with the restaurant since the beginning—so it’s not surprising that staff at Los Arroyos are considered part of the family.

BLUE AGAVE GONE BONKERS With more than 300 tequilas, approximately 60 of which are añejos, a long shelf dedicated to “extra” añejos and another covered exclusively with mezcals, this bar is a biblioteca of agave. No library card necessary; just an ID.
HOUSE LABEL TEQUILA
While researching how to avoid a repeat of the Thomas Fire and the 2018 mudslides, owner Berkeley “Augie” Johnson learned that blue agave makes a good fire break. That got him into tequila and mezcal, and into planting agave. Now, for every case of “Fire Break” house-brand tequila sold, he plants one of the blue beauties to bolster the local firebreak he created.
IT LOOKS DIFFERENT If you’ve been around Santa Barbara long enough, you’ve seen Jeff Shelton’s cool idiosyncratic flights of architectural fancy. He designed Augie’s, which is why the room is so darn cool.
BAR NONE Walk through Shelton’s exaggerated arched entrance and you’ll notice immediately the enormous bar running along one wall. Spacious, audacious, libationally outrageous, it is THE place to be for blue agave at its best—plus top-shelf vodkas, bourbons, etc.
MEXICAN FARE STEPS UP Chef Eduardo Gonzalez’s innovative menu features appetizers like Tuétano—bone marrow, radish and hoja santa chimichurri. Or try ceviche rojo, with California yellowtail, prickly pear tea, avocado and jicama. Entrées include Mayan octopus with carrots, romanesco and diablo foam. After dinner, homemade churros are calling.

Corazón Comedor
SOULFUL STREET FOOD
Inspired by the streets, markets and homes of Mexico, Chef Velazquez has created a menu that showcases the traditional street foods of Mexico City, made with the same amount of love and soul as if your own grandmother had cooked it.
MULTIGENERATIONAL
COOKING Chef Velasquez is thrilled that his mother, Imelda—who has over 40 years of experience making tamales—is bringing her cooking skills to the Corazón Comedor kitchen. You can’t go wrong with her Tamale Puerco en Mole or Tamale de Pollo, but for something a little different, try the Vegetariano, made with butternut squash, poblano pepper and cheese. We think her tamales are some of the best you’ll find outside of Mexico, and bet you’ll agree.
SLOW-COOKED
GOODNESS Besides tamales, Corazón Comedor’s other signature is the guiso, a traditional Mexican braised or stewed dish served with homemade tortillas. Whether opting for one of the chicken, beef, market veggie or seafood versions, the delicious flavors of these homey guisados are sure to transport you to an abuela’s kitchen in Mexico.
WASH IT DOWN WELL
While the mouthwatering food and relaxed ambiance of the restaurant may draw you in, you won’t be doing yourself any favors if you overlook the drink menu. Margaritas, imported wine and beer from Mexico, and Agua Frescas are all wonderful choices, but we recommend trying one of the specialty hot drinks to conclude your meal, such as the warming Oaxacan Chocolate or the Champurrado—a delightful blend of chocolate, corn and cinnamon.

Trattoria Vittoria
FAMILY FIRST If Trattoria Vittoria feels a bit like home, it might be because three generations of the Comin family are involved, including Giovanni “Lucky” Comin, the patriarch of the family, which traces its roots to a small town in the Veneto region of Italy.
THEY KNOW YOUR NAME You know what they say about dining when traveling: “Dine where the locals do.” This restaurant—and especially the bar—is loaded with people who know each other and the staff.
A GENEROUS BAR Cocktails, wine (from Italy and California) and beer are reasonably priced. Drinks are, as the website says, “stiff.” The $13 La Mozza Sangiovese from Tuscany is as food friendly as it gets. And now they’re open for lunch from 11:30-2.
A FEAST OF TRADITIONS The menu is filled with favorites, such as bruschetta and bresaola for appetizers, pastas ranging from linguine with clams to spaghetti aglio e olio to the “homemade” selections that incorporate house-made noodles in lasagna, ravioli with prime rib in a pink cream sauce, and tagliatelle with mushrooms in a cream sauce, and entrées like veal scallopini and seafood soup.
END GAME What’s the most famous Italian dessert? Tiramisú, of course, and their version is gooey good, just as it should be. There are also plenty of after-dinner drinks, grappas, Cognacs and rare Scotches available as accompaniments.

This standard bearer for great easyto-love eats and drinks is perfect for a quick pre- or post-event bite in the heart of Santa Barbara’s entertainment and arts district.
FAST, CASUAL AND GOOD Heading to the opera or a film festival flick? Refueling after the beach or taking a break during a State Street shopping spree? Whatever it is, here you’ll find prompt, friendly service, great drinks and familiar fare that’s a cut above.
CAN’T MISS MENU The Benchmark menu is loaded with favorites: burgers (with condiments and pickles on the plate) and sandwiches (like the grilled chicken pesto or grilled salmon), diverse salads and flatbread, from simple cheese to pork poblano, to name a few.
BENEATH THE TREES Benchmark has long had downtown SB’s best patio, with lots of space, great views of the State Street action and plenty of shade when the warm weather sets in.
WITH GENES LIKE THESE… Benchmark thrives because it’s well run, its people care, and it’s part of a terrific family of equally friendly service-centered Santa Barbara restaurants that includes Brophy Bros., On the Alley and Farmer Boy
SANE SIPPING While cocktails sell for $16 and up around town, Benchmark’s spirited beverages range from just $9 to $13, craft beers are about $7, and no glass of wine costs more than $12. Best deal in town!

L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele
THE FOOD AND SPIRIT OF NAPOLI
ROOTED IN ITALIAN TRADITION L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele is renowned for its Neapolitan pizzas, made using the same centuries-old recipe and imported ingredients as at its origin restaurant in Naples, established in 1870. Staying true to its roots, L’Antica’s new location in Santa Barbara continues the tradition of serving delicious Neapolitan-style pizzas and other Italian fare inspired by the authentic flavors and age-old techniques of Italy.
A SLICE OF NAPOLI The treasured Naples brand has been specializing in Neapolitan pizzas for nearly 153 years, so naturally, they know a thing or two about making good pie. In fact, Head Pizzaiolo Michele Rubini trained under the Executive Chef from the original Naples location, and every pizza maker at L’Antica is a professionally trained Pizzaiolo. So, regardless of whether you’re noshing on the spicy Diavola Pizza or the famed Margherita (as seen in the movie Eat, Pray, Love), you’ll be instantly transported to the streets of Napoli—no passport required.
MADE WITH TRADITION AND LOVE Michele’s food philosophy is simple: to make delicious, quality food—made with equal parts love and tradition—that sparks joy with each bite. Given this, it’s not surprising that all of L’Antica’s pizzas, pastas and breads are made in house; special care is taken to source quality ingredients from Italy and locally; and simple, yet mouthwatering dishes let the flavors and traditions of Italy shine.
A WELCOMING DESTINATION Inspired by his hometown of Naples, owner Francesco Zimone’s mission for L’Antica is to bring to life the authentic gathering spots of Italy—where diners can feel welcomed to linger over a quality meal and enjoy genuine Italian hospitality. And at L’Antica Santa Barbara, you can do just that. Located in a historic Spanish-style building in downtown’s Arts District, the relaxed, convivial nature of the space makes it an inviting place to eat, drink, and savor La Dolce Vita in Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara is where the mountains meet the ocean, and a world-class, no-car-required wine tasting experience is just a few steps in almost any direction. Given Santa Barbara’s proximity to the Santa Ynez Valley and the Santa Maria Valley, two of the best wine regions in the US, it’s no wonder that a variety of wineries and tasting rooms now populate hot downtown spots, the perennially poppin’ Funk Zone, and other bustling nearby neighborhoods. And thanks to the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, navigating the wealth of options has never been easier.
WINE TASTING in Santa Barbara dates back to 1962 when Santa Barbara Winery first opened its doors in a warehouse near the city’s oceanfront. In 2005 the Trail began to organically develop around this forerunner, and by 2007 eight of the original downtown wineries joined forces to officially create the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail. The goal was to offer everyone from oenophiles on serious tasting missions to novices simply looking for a day of fun the opportunity to learn about and taste the wide range of varietals and styles crafted from the county’s best vineyards.
THE TRAIL is populated with dozens of wineries and tasting rooms sprinkled throughout several districts, each with a distinct personality and vibe: the iconic Funk Zone, the historic Presidio Neighborhood, the Haley Corridor, and to the north in the “Goodland” of Goleta, and to the south in upscale Montecito, and laid-back Summerland Explore the Trail on foot, hop on a shuttle, cruise it by bike, or catch a ride-share. Along the way, be sure to stop and sample the eclectic assortment of restaurants, breweries, cocktail joints, art galleries, coffee bars, retail shops and even a distillery.

GREAT SKIN IS IN AT TMA
Facial Plastic Surgeon Allison Pontius, MD and Jamie Flanigan, Aesthetic RN give their expert advice on skincare.
Is there anything you take, or do, religiously every day?
AP: Exercise is an essential part of my day and supports healthier skin, and I never skip wearing sunblock.
JF: I eat healthy food and drink plenty of water every day. A balanced diet and hydration are essential for our overall well-being, including our skin health.
What is the one product you cannot live without?
AP: I use a retinoid (AlphaRet by Skinbetter) every single night. It’s a nonnegotiable part of my regimen.
JF: Vitamin C+ Correcting Complex by Revision Skincare. It brightens my complexion and helps prevent oxidative damage from the sun and environment.
What is the single most bang for the buck treatment women and men can do for aging skin?
AP: Mineral-based sunblock is a no-brainer. Nothing will benefit your skin more for the price. As far as treatments, I think Sculptra is an amazing way to stimulate the production of collagen.
JF: Daily mineral sunscreen and sun avoidance is the best way to prevent skin from prematurely aging.
If you could only have three products which three would they be?
AP: 1. Retinol/retinoid, 2. Vitamin C/antioxidant, 3. Mineral-based sunblock
JF: 1. Vitamin C+ Correcting Complex by Revision Skincare, 2. Skinceuticals 3% Retinol, 3. Le Mieux Bio Cell Rejuvenating Cream
If you could wave a magic wand and fix one problem for patients what would it be?
AP: I would like a magic wand to erase brown spots/sun damage. It often takes multiple laser treatments or peels to lighten brown spots and also requires a commitment from patients to minimize sun exposure and consistently use the proper skin care at home. A magic wand would be much easier!
JF: I would help people to see their beauty instead of focusing on their flaws. My goal when treating patients is always to help them address their concerns so they can feel confident and positive about their appearance.

HONEYBEE ALCHEMY
Meet the co-owners of Santa Barbara Hives and avid apiarists (a fancy term for beekeeper), Barnaby Draper and Ashley Farrell. When not at one of their two stores, they're likely hard at work developing natural products, focusing on sustainability and tending to honeybee hives scattered across the county. This business duo started beekeeping several years ago, fell in love with bees and all they do for our planet and then decided to put their "honey" where their mouth is! The inspiration behind their business and product development comes from being protectors of the bees, with a goal of providing the local community an opportunity to learn about the magic and importance of bees.
The Santa Barbara Hives flagship store in Carpinteria is replete with a plant-based Café and Market, which offers organic coffee, cashew cheeses, ferments and other plantbased foods. The second location (housed in the former Instrumental Music Store on upper State Street) is more mercantile, offering eco-friendly lifestyle, home goods and wellness products made in-house. There's also a wellcurated selection of glassware, linens, household goods, toys for the wee ones and other quality eco-friendly wares, along with a section dedicated to gourmet pantry items. And attention chocolate lovers, the Jean Michel Carré Chocolate Caramels made with Santa Barbara Hives honey are a must-try! Santa Barbara Hives, a resource for beekeepers, offers "nucs" of bees (a "nucleus colony," or a small-sized hive), queen bees and other equipment. An added bonus to shopping at Santa Barbara Hives is that for every item purchased in-store or online a mangrove tree is planted in Madagascar to support the efforts to combat climate change—literally, a win-win for all!
We recently popped into the new Santa Barbara Hives Upper State Street location, where the proprietors gave us some sweet insight into the wonder of bees and the rich bounty of goods made from honey, beeswax and more from their enchanting world.
Supurb Suds
Our mission is to curate natural, healthy, sustainable wellness products like lip balms, salves, scrubs, bath bombs and these long-lasting allnatural soaps.
Bees pollinate a large portion of the world’s food crops. It is imperative that we protect and cultivate them so they may continue their mission of supporting plant and human life.
Sweet Spot
Come in and sample our raw, unfiltered honey. With flavors like Avocado, Chaparral, Sage or Wildflower, you’re sure to find one or more you can’t resist. And a jar of it makes a perfect hostess or housewarming gift.
Secret sauce
Customers love our unique selection of pantry items from small companies that have a focus on restorative and regenerative agricultural practices. Grab a tangy sauce or some finishing oil to make a next-level dinner.
Burn bright The candle of choice by royalty and nobility for centuries because of its sweet smell and warm glow, beeswax candles are considered the cleanest, brightest and longestburning candles. All of our beeswax candles are hand-rolled or hand-poured right here on the American Riviera.
Everyday Earth Savings
Every little bit counts, especially when it comes to things we use and consume on a daily basis. We love these toothpaste “bites” that come in a refillable glass bottle!
Workshop it
We host workshops at the State Street location on topics from beekeeping to gardening, crafting and more.
Making scents
You can’t go wrong with one of our cleanburning, made-in-house soy candles or subtly fragrant scent diffusers.

There's a standing invitation at the downtown Santa Barbara showroom and design studio Celadon House to pop in, stop for a minute and take a deep breath. The soothing vibe in the showroom is palpable, and you'll feel it the moment you step through the door. Guided by a mission of creating spaces that fuse ancient serenity with coastal modern, owner and lead designer Kelli Thornton and her team collaborate with clients to create home and commercial interiors that are relaxing and welcoming. Clean, simple lines, calming colors and textures, and tranquil spaces that prioritize fewer but higher quality pieces made of organic, eco-friendly materials fuel their signature style.
The well-organized showroom is brimming with a unique assortment of eco-friendly upholstered furniture, a significant collection of organic and vintage textiles, home accents and hand-picked art from around the world. Captivating vignettes inspire and enable customers to envision the scenes in their own homes. Furniture from Cisco Brothers—a sustainable furniture line known for its exceptional quality, comfort and commitment to social awareness and the environment— anchors many of these very livable vignettes. Their collection of sectionals, sofas and occasional chairs is made to order by local craftspeople in Los Angeles using responsibly harvested wood, water-based stains and certified organic textiles. Having partnered with the line for over 20 years, Celadon House features one of the largest selections of Cisco Home furniture on the Central Coast.
Since opening in 2001, Celadon House has grown into a leading home furnishing and interior design business, now with two retail stores on California's central coast. Running the business is a family affair, with the owner's daughter Allie, son Rick, long-time assistant Jorja La Barre and several additional design and retail specialists working together to create an environment and an aesthetic known by many as "Celadon House Style”. In addition to the retail experience where customers can purchase directly from the showroom floor and place custom orders, Celadon House also offers comprehensive interior design services for commercial and residential projects, including new development and construction, space planning, color selection, custom upholstery and room design. Here the team shares what's new for the season, some expert advice and tips for infusing your living space with a refined mix of global goods.

Elizabeth Gordon Gallery , a.k.a. E.G.G., invites guests of all interest levels—from art connoisseurs to curious passersby— to transcend the ordinary and delight the senses with their diverse roster of contemporary artists. Established in 1984, E.G.G. presents one of the most exciting collections of contemporary art in the United States, making it well-established as a premier destination for contemporary art collectors and enthusiasts. With stunning paintings adorning the space and a focus on fostering a dynamic artistic community, the gallery continues to be a vital cultural hub for Santa Barbara and beyond. A deep commitment to emerging artists and an accessible location just off State Street, near the Funk Zone, makes E.G.G. a must for anyone exploring a love of the arts. We recently popped into Elizabeth Gordon Gallery to meet the new owners, Juan and Talissa Gil. Here's what Mr. Gil had to say about their artist-driven vision, commitment to community-building, the future of E.G.G. and more.
Round trip from Santa Barbara
I am a Santa Barbara native who traveled extensively using photography to capture the beauty of the places I encountered. After years of roaming, I settled in Milan, Italy, in the '90s, where I met my beautiful wife, Talissa. Combining our passions for art and photography, we opened up what was originally a high-end darkroom and print shop for the local fashion market. With the advent of digital photography, it evolved into a "lightroom" with fine art giclée printing on cotton papers and canvas and eventually the first conservation frame shop in Italy. After 25 years in Milan, my wife and I felt it was time to move back "home" to Santa Barbara with our four kids. We purchased Santa Barbara Art & Frame Co in early 2021, bringing our years of fine art design and conservation framing experience to the area. Our latest exciting endeavor is assuming Elizabeth Gordon Gallery's operations as managing partners/owners alongside longtime proprietor Heidi Ferguson.
Engaging, interactive and expanding
Since taking the reigns last fall, our main priority continues to be our commitment to engaging the local community through events and exhibitions and making the gallery for everyone. We've also expanded our online presence, making it more interactive by highlighting videos of the artists. Our social accounts provide a portal for sharing behind-thescenes glimpses of the creative process and giving the audience a personal connection to the artists.
Curated in color with a side of passion
Being a small, intimate gallery, we rotate the art frequently and use light to enhance the beauty of each piece. The artwork creates an uplifting ambiance; we are just there to share the artists' stories and layer on an emotional connection. The space, filled with pops of color, exhibits many different mediums, from magazine cutout collages mixed with spray paint to works that use more natural materials. We love working with artists who live and breathe art and are passionate about sharing their stories.
From California cool to international awesomness
We recently welcomed multidisciplinary Californian artist Greg Miller into the gallery. His work examines the momentary beauty in the fleeting parts of American culture, and his head-turning pieces fit well with our other artists
America Martin, Sherri & Gino Belassen, David Matthew King, Stanley Boydston, Rafael Gaete and Dan Lencioni, among others. Apart from our continuing commitment to discovering new local artists, we'll go international this year, creating an exciting worldwide experience.
An 'Egg-cellent' outlook
We want E.G.G. to become a creative hub offering educational and interactive experiences through community outreach. We look forward to hosting events and exhibitions involving meet-ups with the artists and creating a community feeling we all long for in Santa Barbara. We're excited to explore many more different mediums in the world of art-making. This is just the beginning! 15 W.

SPRING/SUMMER 2023 74 DINING & DESTINATIONS
The Crafter's Library is the ultimate place to nurture your creative spirit and learn something new. With an entirely refreshing concept for entertainment and socializing built around making things and meeting people, this unique gathering space hits the sweet spot for those seeking a departure from traditional food and drink-centric mingling. Located in historic La Arcada Plaza in Downtown Santa Barbara, this co-working, community-focused space hosts classes and workshops, including basic sewing, glass etching, macrame and other modern craft projects. The Crafter's Library also boasts a burgeoning retail section featuring giftable goods made on-site by local artisans, members and staff. You'll also find an excellent selection of yarn, craft books and kits, puzzles, quilting supplies, journals and other makerinspired merchandise.
A range of membership options designed to meet the needs of both locals and visitors allow guests access to some of the newest and most sophisticated craft machinery available. And, of course, friendly, knowledgeable, and talented team members assist and instruct users on operating the cutting-edge technology. Come for the fun and community; leave with a new skill, a hand-crafted treasure and perhaps another friend.
Here's what owner and consummate crafter Andrew Rawls had to say about how The Crafter's Library has evolved since opening, current happenings and what's in store for the future.
Take a pass at it
When we first opened, we imagined that crafters of all sorts would flock to us, get a membership and use our space as an extension of their craft room. Many members do this, and we found our store perfect for people who want to dip their toes in the crafting pool. Our classes are great for people who want to sample various crafts. That is why we created our Class Pass membership. This 30-day membership gives the member access to all our classes at no additional cost. The only exception is if we have our community instructors teaching the course, then they get 50% off. No matter how much time you're spending in Santa Barbara, you can take advantage of all that we offer here with singleday, week, month or annual membership options.
Party on
We are so excited to have expanded our private event capabilities. We love hosting corporate team bonding events, baby showers, bachelorette parties, kids' parties and more! We can be a one-stop party shop, handling food and drinks, decor and activities for folks too.
Make mine a one-of-a-kind
One of our favorite things to do is to customize items for guests. We have all the fun toys, like a laser etcher/engraver, a commercial embroidery machine, and computerized die cutters, to name a few. We can customize pillows, bags, shirts, hats and more. We also do commissions and have helped folks create unique pieces—everything from baby announcement pillows to custom-etched glassware for conferences. One of my favorite collaborations was with a local mother who had a memory quilt made from her daughter's high school t-shirts, which was given as a graduation present.
Individual instruction
We offer private lessons for anyone who needs more guided instruction on any craft we offer. Any class on our calendar can be booked as a private lesson. From our introductions to sewing, macrame, knitting and crochet to our ocean resin or floral arrangement classes, we can offer a unique experience catered to your schedule.
Mobile makers
We are working with a variety of different hotels, senior centers and local businesses to bring The Crafter's Library to the community by offering onsite classes.
A strong foundation
I am most excited about the 501(c)3 non-profit we established, called The Crafter's Library Foundation. All donations to the Foundation help its mission to increase access to arts and crafts education. Through it, we hope to offer scholarships for classes. 9 EAST FIGUEROA STREET • 805.770.3566

Great, great outdoors ideas
It's easy to break a sweat outside when the reward is a spectacular sunset or a sparkling ocean water view. I enjoy hiking the trails in Montecito, cruising the path by the Andrée Clark Bird Refuge, strolling along Shoreline Park and walking around the Santa Barbara Harbor or Stearns Wharf
My Santa Barbara
There’s always more to do and see in S.B., even for local blogger Betsy O’Brien. Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Betsy still knows how to play “tourist” in her hometown. Here she shares recommendations for the perfect picnic spots, can’t-miss attractions, marvelous margaritas and more. Read on to learn more about Betsy and to view the American Riviera through her eyes.
Just add water
It’s always a treat to get on the water (especially on a hot day). Book a sunset sail with Santa Barbara Sailing Center and appreciate the stunning coastline and mountains from a different perspective. For a bird’s-eye view of downtown, visit the gorgeous Santa Barbara County Courthouse and take the elevator to the clock tower for postcardworthy photos. If possible, try to catch a show at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Go early and take the extra steps to the top—I promise the workout is worth it!
Soak up the sun
We’re lucky to have such temperate weather here. After living in different parts of the country, I can assure you I don’t miss scraping my windshield or shoveling my sidewalk. I never take the blue skies and 70-degree winter days for granted. We really do live in paradise!

g I am passionate about traveling and exploring other parts of the world, but I genuinely think there is no place like home. It’s hard to beat Santa Barbara!
g I created “The Bets Life” in 2020 and haven’t looked back. Whether it’s writing a “Real Talk” post, creating a funny video, interviewing a podcast guest or offering glimpses of California living, I delight in sharing and connecting with my online and local community.
Cocktail classics
You can’t go wrong with a Pacific Spritz (or the scenery) at the Rosewood Miramar Beach Bar. I’m also a fan of a more casual drink at The Nugget in Summerland. Lucky’s Honor Bar, and Los Arroyos are Follow @thebetslife on Instagram or visit thebetslife.com for Betsy’s latest writing, podcast episodes, S.B. adventures and life happenings.
g I believe in the power of storytelling, eye-watering laughter and life’s inevitable and relatable, “Oh, no” or “Heck, yes” moments.
Play dates
Plan a park picnic! While known for its beaches, S.B. also has beautiful parks. The Mission Rose Garden, Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden, and Manning Park are a few of my top picks. A visit to the Funk Zone is a guaranteed good time as well—go for the murals and street art, shopping, art galleries, restaurants and wine tasting rooms.
Savor a sunset
Douglas Family Preserve, S.B.’s largest coastal open space area, offers an incredible, panoramic ocean lookout. Bring a chair or simply sit on the wall at my classic go-to spot, Butterfly Beach, for golden hour and picturesque sunsets.
