Uncommon Beauty

From whimsical to museum quality and collector creations, there is something fresh and inspiring for everyone. - Z Jiroutova, ZFolio Owner

Voted Top Retailer for Designer Jewelry in the United States by the JCK Design Center, ZFolio thrives in two artful retail gallery locations - one in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley’s quaint Danish village of Solvang and the other on Cannery Row in Monterey. What began as a suitcase filled with optical crystals from owner Zdena’s native Czech Republic, is today ‘the place to go’ for distinct, unusual and hard to find creations. “Z,” as she is known, and her husband Michael Mendizza, who also happens to be an accomplished photographer, curate their award-winning contemporary gallery with museum quality art glass, wood, designer jewelry, nature photography, home decor items, and personal accessories. ZFolio represents over 100 American and international designers. For over a decade, discerning clients return time and time again, often with first-time visitors in tow, to to explore and discover unusual, intriguing, and enchanting creations. ZFolio, surrounding our lives with uncommon beauty.

INTERVIEW WITH AMBER LEASE OWNER OF

Wildflower Women Amber Lease is one busy woman. She’s a mother of two, personal stylist, and owner of Wildflower Women and Sandbox Kids. And she still manages to artfully curate a covetable collection of clothing, accessories and lifestyle goods for women, babies and girls for multiple stores - one in the Santa Ynez Valley wine tasting hot spot Los Olivos, another in Santa Maria and a new location in Pismo Beach. Here she offers insight into her growing brand. THE INSPIRATION As a busy on-the-go mom of two boys, I understand the need to develop a fashionable yet effortless look. I have always been a fashion enthusiast, so I took my mid-western values along with my California girl approach to life and started creating stylish wearable looks for everyday women. A LITTLE HISTORY I grew up in retail. My family owned a clothing store called Johnson's For Children. There I learned the ins and outs of the retail world. Because children’s clothing was second nature to me, I first opened Sandbox Kids in 2009 and a few years later developed the women’s concept, which became Wildflower Women. THE GOODS I do all the buying for the stores and am very selective regarding what I bring in. As a personal stylist, I know how to edit each collection to include a wide array of women. I typically go for the classics - earth tones, simple cuts, and timeless fits. THE GOAL My goal is to offer a taste of the experience of a bygone era - like the traditional department stores and women’s boutiques my mother and grandmother used to take me to. They were kind, sweet, and unique to their time and respective places. I hope to offer a sense of what it was like to shop at these stores in their heyday. FRESH BLOSSOMS Being a Wildflower means allowing yourself to grow places you never knew possible and that’s a reflection of what we are doing this year. In addition to opening the Pismo Beach location, we are launching an online store and adding girls clothing sizes 7-16. We now cover newborn girls all the way through young and seasoned women. Our in-house personal shopper and stylist Lauren Condit joined the Wildflower family last spring. She offers complimentary services and a keen eye to help customers find the best fits and looks for their individual style. Email Stylist@ wildflowerwomenboutique.com to book an appointment.

#ShopSmall Talk 3 In a world of big box stores and corporate chains, our local business owners are working hard to preserve the distinctive character of Santa Barbara. These independent establishments reflect our community, bring variety to our retail experience, and vitality to our neighborhoods.

quick questions with thriving local retailers

Shannon & Albert DiPadova

Riviera Towel Company

Tell us about yourself and your business. We always joke you have to be Italian to work with your spouse because we’re really good at yelling at each other by day then kissing and making up by night. While traveling abroad, Shannon fell in love with the colorfully striped towels called “peshtemals" or “foutas" which are found all over Europe. About three years ago we decided to launch Riviera Towel Company to bring these stylish towels and textiles factory-direct to Santa Barbara. We donate a portion of sales to marine organizations working to protect our oceans. What’s the best part about owning a business in SB? We found the perfect space in what many locals refer to as the HUB. Here you can start and end your day only shopping local - breakfast at D’Angelo’s Bakery, lunch at Backyard Bowls, a class at Yoga Soup, or peruse the goods at Chocolate Maya, EGG Galleries, Hayward’s and other great independent retailers. And I love the sweet smell of coffee from SB Coffee Roasting Company wafting through our space all day long.

Jill Johnson

Loveworn Give us some background info about yourself and your business. I have been designing and creating all of my life and have a relentless passion for doing what I love. My latest endeavor is Loveworn. The retail boutique is a snapshot of my vision for the brand and a haven where we create and test a lot of product. It’s a casual store with an edgy, couture vibe. A lot of the clothing is produced locally by my partner Wallace and me. We also offer one of the bestcurated selections of vintage denim in California. Was there a specific moment or event that inspired you set up shop in SB? Yes. I wasn’t even thinking of starting another business, but when a friend showed me this commercial space near the beach that was about to become available I jumped on it! I immediately had a vision and a feeling that was just so strong. What’s your current in-store obsession? Our cashmere sweaters for sure. Each one is so unique and soulful, I get attached to them. Also coveting - any painting by Wallace (we have a gallery in the back of Loveworn) but my cottage is tiny, and you need some serious wall space for his art.

What are you most coveting in the store right now? Albert - We didn’t intend to sell the striped deck chairs with pompoms featured as a prop in our catalogues, but we’ve have been asked so many times if we sell them, we ordered some for our customers. Shannon - The Santa Barbara Towel is still my fav. Proceeds from the sale of this particular style support the Channel Keepers, a local organization who patrols our harbors to make sure the Cruise ships are on their best behavior.

Genny Cummings & Chili

Indigo Interiors Tell us about yourself. First and foremost I’m an Interior Designer, as confirmed by fantasies of alternative living spaces - tiny houses, earthen coil houses, and tree houses. For over 37 years my husband Tom and I have shared our home with family, four dogs, 3 cats, and a vast community of wildlife. Hiking with our pooch, practicing yoga, fantasizing about homes, and a good book over a glass of cabernet balance my busy work week. How did you come to own a small business? I always had fond memories of working in this very small, interesting store in the Chicago suburbs when I was in high school, but eventually ended up in advertising. However, between falling in love with the Japanese design aesthetic, constantly daydreaming about houses, and becoming a bit disillusioned with my job in advertising, all it took was a little encouragement from my family and viola, I opened my own business. At what point did you know that SB was the place to be? I developed a love of the Japanese aesthetic and their vintage furniture when my sister lived in Japan. When a small space opened up down from my advertising job, I seized the moment! Soon after, Indigo, a Japanese furniture and folk art store, was born. Over the past 34 years and 2 moves within the neighborhood, Indigo evolved into the current, more contemporary manifestation of the original store. I’ve discovered that longevity requires retail recreation about every 7 years.

LUCKY’S: B e c a u s e G r e a t n e s s A l w a y s Ta s t e s G o o d T

hey say you can never have too much of a good thing, so what about a great thing? Lucky’s is that, and its loyal army of locals and regular Santa Barbara visitors declare daily - whether they come for weekend brunch, a working lunch, evening cocktails or special occasions ranging from an intimate wedding proposal to a big birthday blowout - that they can’t get enough of their favorite hang. It’s no wonder. They come because they know what matters - the best ingredients treated right, friendly professional service, and an inviting, convivial ambience. They know, too, that Lucky’s provides it, day in and day out, as reliably as the sun shines during the Santa Barbara summer. Do a thing well, why change it? Lucky’s does its enduringly stable menu extremely well, with classic appetizers like shrimp and crab cocktails and French onion soup, arguably the best (USDA Prime) steaks in town and a zillion classic side dishes including eight potato dishes alone, creamed spinach and fresh corn. And for a place that is largely dedicated to animal protein from terra firma, Lucky’s treats super-fresh local seafood just right, has vegans covered with their own burger plus sautéed tofu with Japanese vinaigrette, and rounds it all out with about a baker’s dozen of to-die-for desserts. Since you can’t get enough, Lucky’s will continue to invite you back for more. LUCKY’S • 1279 COAST VILLAGE ROAD, MONTECITO • 805.565.7540 • LUCKYS-STEAKHOUSE.COM

A Taste of the Santa Barbara You Love

W

ITH SO MUCH HAPPENING in the bustling Funk Zone, it can be easy to forget the peaceful, small-town feel that has been attracting folks to downtown Santa Barbara forever. For a revivifying old-school dining experience where farm to table has always been “in,” head to Louie’s Bistro in the Upham Hotel. At lunch or dinner, you can enjoy appetizers and a glass of local wine or a cold beer at a leisurely pace, either in the cozy dining room or on the wraparound veranda, surrounded by lush gardens. Either way, Louie’s invites guests to slow down and relax while relishing the friendly service and terrific food that have made it a locals’ favorite for more than thirty years. Owner Anne Rizzoli and Chef Marco “Tony” Manzaneres serve what Anne refers to as “Santa Barbara wine country comfort cuisine” partnered with terrific, primarily Central Coast wines and a few steak-friendly Napa Cabernets. Parking’s easy, the pace is relaxing, and the menu doesn’t require a thesaurus of food words from the current culinary zeitgeist. Grilled meatloaf, rack of lamb, pork chop or filet mignon; cioppino; pizza and pasta; the best fresh local fish, desserts, and more - it’s all familiar food done right. And it just might make you remember the Santa Barbara you fell in love with first. LOUIE’S BISTRO • 1414 DE LA VINA STREET • 805.963.7003 LOUIESSB.COM

Renaud’s in Montecito

A Playful New Take

In all his years as a chef, French-born patîssier Renaud Gonthier has never lost sight of what brings him joy: they include a colorful salad that stands tall on the plate but doesn’t overflow, a delicate rolled (not folded) omelet, a golden-crusted croissant, the idiom of French baking for which he’s locally famous. Now he has brought that sensibility to a new location in Montecito. The space reflects a traditional bistro design with a gleaming, modern display case for his desserts and other treats. This Renaud’s is open for breakfast and lunch like the others, but also for dinner, and Gonthier is having fun with the familiar here. He gives his croissant a savory turn as a pressed French Cubano sandwich with smoked ham, Gruyere cheese and cornichons. He makes a croque monsieur on a large slice of bread, cuts it into squares and serves it as snack fare at the beer-andwine bar. He uses pâte à choux, the light éclair dough, to make Parisian gnocchi. He makes croquettes “because they’re fun and I like them.” There’s even a hangar steak cooked Sous-vide to perfection and then quickly seared on the grill. Of course, the newest Renaud’s has all the usual pastries, macarons, cakes, pies, tartlets, cookies and other divine treats that have made Renaud’s everyone’s go-to for an authentic taste of Paris. LOS ARROYOS Welcomes a New Member To The Family TONY AND MARIA ARROYO opened the first of four Los Arroyos restaurants

in 1999, and Tony has since opened others in Montecito, Goleta, Camarillo and even Carmel, Indiana. These are truly “family” restaurants. At every one, family members are there to make the experience fun and friendly and the food fresh, authentic, excellent and super-satisfying. Tony’s two brothers work with him, and so does Tony and Maria’s 15-year-old son, Diego. Laplace Wine Bar & Shop

Owners Betty Dunbar

N

ewcomer Laplace Wine Bar and Shop has reinvented the Funk Zone wine-tasting experience by inviting customers to “travel the world in a glass.” The inventory of more than 400 wines, representing legendary producers from France, Spain, Germany, Italy, California and beyond, was assembled by international wine collectors and experts Betty Dunbar, the creative force behind Laplace, and her co-proprietor, Dennis Peterson. During Dunbar’s many years in the wine industry, she has been a wine importer and distributor, has managed Brander Vineyards, and has extensively explored the wine regions of France. Laplace, as a result, sells only quality, whether it’s an exclusive high-end collectable wine or one of roughly 60 wines priced under twenty dollars. Laplace’s highly trained staff can direct you to the perfect bottle to enjoy with charcuterie and cheeses in the spacious outdoor terrace. Customers are also invited to join one of their four unique wine clubs. Don’t miss the gift shop, their champagne/caviar black tie event in November or the open house in December.

Once you’ve made wine, dug trenches in a vineyard, and studied the geology of the soil in ancient vine-producing regions, you see why people become obsessed with the word “terroir” she says. “It gives wines a sense of place, and our goal is for customers to have a bottle of wine in their hands that has a sense of place without having to spend a lot.

MODERN AND FUNCTIONAL A designer collaboration for a WOW result

A

S AN INTERIOR DESIGNER, MELISSA BASSETT, Director of Wow at Shubox Modern Armony Wine Country, recognizes exceptional quality when she sees it. Melissa recalls a moment from her visit to the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show last year, “I saw the Armony cabinets with their clean lines, warm materials, and beautiful lacquer finishes, and I immediately knew this was the look and quality I’d been searching for. The clincher was getting to meet the talented team at Armony Cucine USA. While designing and building her new custom home in the Napa Valley, Melissa worked hand in hand with Armony’s lead

designer, Michel Clair, and Romain and Myriam Doussineau of Reed Interiors, to finalize the exquisite design for her state-of-the-art kitchen. Melissa's expert eye allowed her to incorporate complementary materials in fresh ways. A rich wood veneer was selected for the tall units

and a warm Visone lacquer for the island. These materials were paired with Carrara marble backsplashes and Wirbel steel countertops - a bold move that perfectly mixed sleek, yet traditional elements to complement the vineyard setting and modern lines of this showcase home. The result is an impressive kitchen that is clearly the centerpiece of the house. To achieve a cohesive and harmonious flow throughout the house, she also selected Armony cabinetry for the laundry room, wall-hung bathroom vanities, and custom drawer units for the walk-in closets. The beautiful textures, warm materials, and crisp lines complement the stunning modern architecture of this resort-like vineyard property. “Every moment, since that day I first met with this incredible team, I’ve been delighted with my choice to work with Armony Cucine USA. Collaborating with a talented designer like Michel was an added benefit that brought the kitchen to another level and exceeded (my already very high) expectations.”

MID-CENTURY MODERN muse An Ojai retreat undergoes a major makeover to reveal its Zen nature.

Deborah Campbell’s clients set out to find a house that could A Phoebe Brunner painting of “The Pink Moment” commissioned by the designer, hangs accommodate a yoga studio, the moment or rather the “pink above a George Nakashima console in the entry. moment” they laid eyes upon the mid-century Ojai property, an offer was in the works. The wife, a geophysicist and yoga practitioner and her husband, a retired CEO, couldn’t resist the allure of the brief period when sunlight bounces off of the Topa Topa Mountains at dusk and bathes the valley in soft pink hues. The home’s floor to ceiling windows provide picture-perfect viewing of this daily occurrence known locally as “The Pink Moment.”

“The use of teak and Ojai sandstone showcases the natural beauty of the area and creates a tranquil Zen retreat that so mirrors my clients’ sensibility. - Deborah Campbell Although the couple wished to honor the home’s roots they didn’t want mid-century modern to dominate the design. So, when the word “Zen” popped up in the initial design discussions, Campbell seized upon it to set the tone and the project got underway. The result is a thoughtful convergence of organic materials and textures, pops of color, luxurious teak wood, and judicious use of Bohemian paisley, which warms the interiors without compromising the clean lines and timeless appeal of mid-century modern design. There are lots of moments in this house, some Zen and others pink, and they all add up to tranquil time at a beautiful home retreat. FOR INQUIRIES: DCID • 805.969.9657 • DEBORAHCAMPBELLDESIGN.COM

DINING & DESTINATIONS

FALL/WINTER 2018

I

first came across this wonderful sauce in Rome several years back on a stopover on the way to visit my family in Tunisia. Amatriciana is a well-known and muchbeloved sauce in central Italy, much like its sister sauces Carbonara and Cacio e Pepe. Its simplicity and unctuousness leave you wanting to lick the bowl or at least grab a piece of bread for a scarpetta (cleaning the bowl with bread). It gained popularity amongst chefs worldwide in 2016 just after the tragic earthquake in Amatrice. Chefs and restaurateurs everywhere featured it on their menus and donated the proceeds to relief efforts. I recently taught my 9-year-old daughter, Lulu Miel, how to make it, and it is now her favorite pasta.

Pasta all’Amatriciana 2 tablespoons good quality olive oil 4 ounces thinly cubed guanciale, unsmoked bacon or pancetta 1 large shallot minced 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1 anchovy fillet (optional) 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1/2 tablespoon red pepper flakes 2 cloves garlic minced 1 tablespoon fresh thyme 2 bay leaves fresh or dried 1 cup dry white wine 1 28 ounce can of peeled San Marzano tomatoes with juices crushed by hand 1 cup of Sungold or any small sweet tomatoes like grape or cherry tomatoes A handful of kosher salt to flavor the boiling pasta water 1 pound of Gigli pasta (you can also substitute with Bucatini) 1/2 cup finely grated sheep's milk pecorino Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, more pecorino and a drizzle of olive oil Heat olive oil in a large heavy skillet. I like to use a large 12" cast iron. Add guanciale or the pork product of your choosing, and saute until golden and starting to crisp. Add shallot, salt, sugar, anchovy, tomato paste, chili flakes, garlic, thyme, and bay leaves and fry together for 1 or 2 minutes. Add the white wine to deglaze. Allow some of the alcohol to cook off. After 1 minute, add the hand crushed canned tomatoes and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the fresh tomatoes (whole if small or halved if larger). Simmer together for another 20 minutes until tomatoes soften and melt into the sauce. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to boil. Season with salt, add the pasta and cook, occasionally stirring. Cook two minutes less than the package cook time so the pasta is al dente. Drain, reserving a cup of the pasta water. Toss the pasta in the saucepan on low heat, gradually adding a bit of the pasta water until sauce and pasta are incorporated; note you may not need the full cup of pasta water. Turn off heat and add 1/2 cup of the pecorino. Serve with fresh parsley, olive oil, and more pecorino or freshly grated Parmesan.
