INTERVIEW WITH AMBER LEASE OWNER OF

Wildflower Women Amber Lease is one busy woman. She’s a mother of two, personal stylist, and owner of Wildflower Women and Sandbox Kids. And she still manages to artfully curate a covetable collection of clothing, accessories and lifestyle goods for women, babies and girls for multiple stores - one in the Santa Ynez Valley wine tasting hot spot Los Olivos, another in Santa Maria and a new location in Pismo Beach. Here she offers insight into her growing brand. THE INSPIRATION As a busy on-the-go mom of two boys, I understand the need to develop a fashionable yet effortless look. I have always been a fashion enthusiast, so I took my mid-western values along with my California girl approach to life and started creating stylish wearable looks for everyday women. A LITTLE HISTORY I grew up in retail. My family owned a clothing store called Johnson's For Children. There I learned the ins and outs of the retail world. Because children’s clothing was second nature to me, I first opened Sandbox Kids in 2009 and a few years later developed the women’s concept, which became Wildflower Women. THE GOODS I do all the buying for the stores and am very selective regarding what I bring in. As a personal stylist, I know how to edit each collection to include a wide array of women. I typically go for the classics - earth tones, simple cuts, and timeless fits. THE GOAL My goal is to offer a taste of the experience of a bygone era - like the traditional department stores and women’s boutiques my mother and grandmother used to take me to. They were kind, sweet, and unique to their time and respective places. I hope to offer a sense of what it was like to shop at these stores in their heyday. FRESH BLOSSOMS Being a Wildflower means allowing yourself to grow places you never knew possible and that’s a reflection of what we are doing this year. In addition to opening the Pismo Beach location, we are launching an online store and adding girls clothing sizes 7-16. We now cover newborn girls all the way through young and seasoned women. Tell us about yourself and your business. We always joke you have to be Italian to work with your spouse because we’re really good at yelling at each other by day then kissing and making up by night. While traveling abroad, Shannon fell in love with the colorfully striped towels called “peshtemals" or “foutas" which are found all over Europe. About three years ago we decided to launch Riviera Towel Company to bring these stylish towels and textiles factory-direct to Santa Barbara. We donate a portion of sales to marine organizations working to protect our oceans. What’s the best part about owning a business in SB? We found the perfect space in what many locals refer to as the HUB. Here you can start and end your day only shopping local - breakfast at D’Angelo’s Bakery, lunch at Backyard Bowls, a class at Yoga Soup, or peruse the goods at Chocolate Maya, EGG Galleries, Hayward’s and other great independent retailers. And I love the sweet smell of coffee from SB Coffee Roasting Company wafting through our space all day long.

Loveworn Give us some background info about yourself and your business. I have been designing and creating all of my life and have a relentless passion for doing what I love. My latest endeavor is Loveworn. The retail boutique is a snapshot of my vision for the brand and a haven where we create and test a lot of product. It’s a casual store with an edgy, couture vibe. A lot of the clothing is produced locally by my partner Wallace and me. We also offer one of the bestcurated selections of vintage denim in California. Was there a specific moment or event that inspired you set up shop in SB? Yes. I wasn’t even thinking of starting another business, but when a friend showed me this commercial space near the beach that was about to become available I jumped on it! I immediately had a vision and a feeling that was just so strong. What’s your current in-store obsession? Our cashmere sweaters for sure. Each one is so unique and soulful, I get attached to them. Also coveting - any painting by Wallace (we have a gallery in the back of Loveworn) but my cottage is tiny, and you need some serious wall space for his art.

What are you most coveting in the store right now? Albert - We didn’t intend to sell the striped deck chairs with pompoms featured as a prop in our catalogues, but we’ve have been asked so many times if we sell them, we ordered some for our customers. Shannon - The Santa Barbara Towel is still my fav. Proceeds from the sale of this particular style support the Channel Keepers, a local organization who patrols our harbors to make sure the Cruise ships are on their best behavior.

Indigo Interiors Tell us about yourself. First and foremost I’m an Interior Designer, as confirmed by fantasies of alternative living spaces - tiny houses, earthen coil houses, and tree houses. For over 37 years my husband Tom and I have shared our home with family, four dogs, 3 cats, and a vast community of wildlife. Hiking with our pooch, practicing yoga, fantasizing about homes, and a good book over a glass of cabernet balance my busy work week. How did you come to own a small business? I always had fond memories of working in this very small, interesting store in the Chicago suburbs when I was in high school, but eventually ended up in advertising. However, between falling in love with the Japanese design aesthetic, constantly daydreaming about houses, and becoming a bit disillusioned with my job in advertising, all it took was a little encouragement from my family and viola, I opened my own business. At what point did you know that SB was the place to be? I developed a love of the Japanese aesthetic and their vintage furniture when my sister lived in Japan. When a small space opened up down from my advertising job, I seized the moment! Soon after, Indigo, a Japanese furniture and folk art store, was born. Over the past 34 years and 2 moves within the neighborhood, Indigo evolved into the current, more contemporary manifestation of the original store. I’ve discovered that longevity requires retail recreation about every 7 years.

A Playful New Take

In all his years as a chef, French-born patîssier Renaud Gonthier has never lost sight of what brings him joy: they include a colorful salad that stands tall on the plate but doesn’t overflow, a delicate rolled (not folded) omelet, a golden-crusted croissant, the idiom of French baking for which he’s locally famous. Now he has brought that sensibility to a new location in Montecito. The space reflects a traditional bistro design with a gleaming, modern display case for his desserts and other treats. This Renaud’s is open for breakfast and lunch like the others, but also for dinner, and Gonthier is having fun with the familiar here. He gives his croissant a savory turn as a pressed French Cubano sandwich with smoked ham, Gruyere cheese and cornichons. He makes a croque monsieur on a large slice of bread, cuts it into squares and serves it as snack fare at the beer-andwine bar. He uses pâte à choux, the light éclair dough, to make Parisian gnocchi. He makes croquettes “because they’re fun and I like them.” There’s even a hangar steak cooked Sous-vide to perfection and then quickly seared on the grill. Melissa recalls a moment from her visit to the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show last year, “I saw the Armony cabinets with their clean lines, warm materials, and beautiful lacquer finishes, and I immediately knew this was the look and quality I’d been searching for. The clincher was getting to meet the talented team at Armony Cucine USA. While designing and building her new custom home in the Napa Valley, Melissa worked hand in hand with Armony’s lead

designer, Michel Clair, and Romain and Myriam Doussineau of Reed Interiors, to finalize the exquisite design for her state-of-the-art kitchen. Melissa's expert eye allowed her to incorporate complementary materials in fresh ways. A rich wood veneer was selected for the tall units

and a warm Visone lacquer for the island. These materials were paired with Carrara marble backsplashes and Wirbel steel countertops - a bold move that perfectly mixed sleek, yet traditional elements to complement the vineyard setting and modern lines of this showcase home. The result is an impressive kitchen that is clearly the centerpiece of the house. To achieve a cohesive and harmonious flow throughout the house, she also selected Armony cabinetry for the laundry room, wall-hung bathroom vanities, and custom drawer units for the walk-in closets. Try a local favorite, Inspiration Point, via Jesusita Trail. first came across this wonderful sauce in Rome several years back on a stopover on the way to visit my family in Tunisia. Amatriciana is a well-known and muchbeloved sauce in central Italy, much like its sister sauces Carbonara and Cacio e Pepe. Its simplicity and unctuousness leave you wanting to lick the bowl or at least grab a piece of bread for a scarpetta (cleaning the bowl with bread). It gained popularity amongst chefs worldwide in 2016 just after the tragic earthquake in Amatrice. Chefs and restaurateurs everywhere featured it on their menus and donated the proceeds to relief efforts. I recently taught my 9-year-old daughter, Lulu Miel, how to make it, and it is now her favorite pasta.

Pasta all’Amatriciana 2 tablespoons good quality olive oil 4 ounces thinly cubed guanciale, unsmoked bacon or pancetta 1 large shallot minced 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1 anchovy fillet (optional) 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1/2 tablespoon red pepper flakes 2 cloves garlic minced 1 tablespoon fresh thyme 2 bay leaves fresh or dried 1 cup dry white wine 1 28 ounce can of peeled San Marzano tomatoes with juices crushed by hand 1 cup of Sungold or any small sweet tomatoes like grape or cherry tomatoes A handful of kosher salt to flavor the boiling pasta water 1 pound of Gigli pasta (you can also substitute with Bucatini) 1/2 cup finely grated sheep's milk pecorino Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, more pecorino and a drizzle of olive oil Heat olive oil in a large heavy skillet. I like to use a large 12" cast iron. Add guanciale or the pork product of your choosing, and saute until golden and starting to crisp. Add shallot, salt, sugar, anchovy, tomato paste, chili flakes, garlic, thyme, and bay leaves and fry together for 1 or 2 minutes. Add the white wine to deglaze. Allow some of the alcohol to cook off. After 1 minute, add the hand crushed canned tomatoes and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the fresh tomatoes (whole if small or halved if larger). Simmer together for another 20 minutes until tomatoes soften and melt into the sauce. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to boil. Season with salt, add the pasta and cook, occasionally stirring. Cook two minutes less than the package cook time so the pasta is al dente. Drain, reserving a cup of the pasta water. Toss the pasta in the saucepan on low heat, gradually adding a bit of the pasta water until sauce and pasta are incorporated; note you may not need the full cup of pasta water. Turn off heat and add 1/2 cup of the pecorino. Serve with fresh parsley, olive oil, and more pecorino or freshly grated Parmesan.
