WHAT HAPPENS when two great local places for food and drink collide? In this case, the happy crash has resulted in The Project. The restaurant-taproom mashup at the edge of the Funk Zone offers a tantalizing food-and-drink experience for lovers of fantastic Mexican street food and a range of familiar, exotic, and experimental craft beverages. It’s the essence of 21st-century Santa Barbara dining: everything is well-defined and made with purpose and integrity, but also mixed, matched and intermingled. The food vision is an extension of Corazon Cocina in the Public Market, beloved for its upscale, habit-forming Mexican street food. Shared small plates are the norm here, but there are also steaks, whole grilled fish and even burgers. The Project’s liquid component, Taproom, has the signature of the popular Captain Fatty’s in Goleta but goes beyond. It

One reason for our longevity is that we strive to offer a premier experience to our clients. A little over thirty-one years ago, we were fortunate enough to open the first of our two Occhiali - which means “eyeglasses in Italian - shops. Coast Village Road continues to be an excellent central location for the Santa Barbara and Montecito communities. Also, shout outs to our wonderful nationally-acclaimed staff of nine licensed opticians and our longtime graphic designer/photographer, Kim Reierson - they are huge contributors to our enduring success.

A SHARED VISION

Salli, my business partner and wife, and I have separate designated responsibilities. She handles all the business parts and oversees both stores. I manage the day to day operations of the CVR shop. There are moments of disagreements, as we see operations from different angles, but both recognize our goals are the same.

The fun part is deciding which collections ultimately make the cut and into our inventory of top international designers. We annually attend shows in New York and Las Vegas and have recently witnessed a growth in new independent eyewear designers who are rocking it, with superb quality and artistry. These small manufacturers in France, Japan, Germany, and even the US take such pride in their collections.

Tell us about yourself and your business. I’m a proud Southern California native, single mom of two boys in college, beach girl, paddle boarder, runner, and I love empowering women to feel good about themselves. And I just celebrated my fourth “birthday” as the owner of Rowan Boutique on Santa Claus Lane Padaro Beach. How did you land in retail? I started working at Nordstrom in my early years in college and soon discovered that sales came easy for me. Also, I loved creating my own unique clothing pieces, like taking plain denim jackets and adorning them with a little bling. Once I started wearing them all of my family and friends wanted their own blinged-out jackets, so I started making and selling them. And while not exactly fashion retail, when my kids were growing up, I owned and ran a family construction company, which provided invaluable business experience.

What’s the best part about owning a business practically on the beach? My amazing customers! I love the vibe on Santa Claus Lane, and the beach just makes everyone happy. I also adore all the businesses on the “Lane” - we all complement and support each other. This area is very special and has a lot of fun history. Was there a specific moment or event that inspired you to set up shop in SB? I lived inland, had one boy in college and the other one on the way and knew once the nest was empty, I wanted to live near the beach. I searched for months before finding Rowan and the moment I did, I quit my medical sales job. My younger sisters and I had a successful weekend pop up boutique here, with clothing and my sister Jill’s hand-made jewelry line. We had a great time, so when the opportunity to create a full-time boutique came up we went for it! And seven years later, here we are in the same great space.

The boutique, along with my life, has evolved so much since opening. We love keeping up with the latest styles and trends while still maintaining our special Chapala & Parker vibe. Also, I was seven months pregnant with my first child when we opened, and I now have two kids with my husband, who by the way, is a lifelong SB local. We love raising our family here and continue to grow, thrive, and enjoy the ride!

GOING LOCAL We recently met up with Montecito-based interior designer, MARC GELINAS in his new Upper Village antique gallery and design studio to discuss antiques, aesthetics, and his harmonious design philosophy. With an impressive vita - a BFA from Pratt Institute, working with renowned designers in New York, time in Paris, and projects from coast to coast - how did you eventually land in Santa Barbara? Simply for a change of lifestyle and a need to get out of the snow! What informs or inspires your design aesthetic? Historical architecture and antiques, plus the use of luxury textiles, blended with sturdy textiles for comfort, wear, and opulence. How do you strike a balance between form and function when designing with fine antiques? Antiques can drop into any environment, from a very modern glass house to a traditional home. I often use them for additional seating or special walls. How has your design philosophy evolved throughout your career? My taste has changed a bit to be a little more sparse, but overall, my training is in scale, form, and function. As long as these principles are in harmony, the overall look will always be correct. What is your favorite project to date and why? A penthouse in NYC, where I discovered, after removing a dropped ceiling, a twentyfoot from the floor to roof gorgeous vaulted gothic ceiling. It was once used as a private chapel when the penthouse was part of a triplex apartment. What else should people know about Marc Normand Gelinas Interior Design? I work around my clients' tastes and preferences, so their home reflects who they are. I never cookie-cutter my taste into projects. What are you most coveting in the store right now? I live in fun, stylish, beachy-casual looks in soft fabrics. This pretty much describes all of the collections at Rowan, but if I had to choose one, I’d say it would be something from our new line Xirena. I love their easy shirting, colorful sweaters, and super sexy, yet comfy underpinnings.

Tell us about yourself and your business. In my early 20’s while at home raising my kids, I spent endless hours flipping through decor and design magazines. I had no money at the time, but plenty of inspiration and passion and knew that I wanted to one day own a home store. Fast forward to 2016 to when I opened Home Santa Barbara. It was a dream come true. Magnolia Home Furniture by Joanna Gaines provided the initial motivation and still remains an integral part of our story, but over the past two and a half years we’ve added so many other great lines - a little of everything, from Modern Farmhouse to Boho. How did you land in retail? A few years ago, when I was ready to take on a new challenge I googled “the next big thing” and up came an article about Warren Buffett partnering with Joanna Gaines to bring her new furniture line into his furniture marts. And that was that - I knew instantly that I wanted to open a store, anchored by her collection. I immediately sent off the application to carry the line, and after an initial rejection and several months of pleading phone calls to their headquarters, I finally got a yes! What’s the best part about owning a business in Santa Barbara? That it allowed me to go into business with my daughter, Lynsey and her husband Jason Trueman, who live here with their two kids. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know my Santa Barbara clientele. When you spend time on the store floor, you build a relationship of trust with your customers, and they want to come back and buy from you. Was there a specific moment or event that inspired you to set up shop in SB? As I mentioned, my daughter and her family live here, and ultimately, I wanted to partner with her in business. So when this beautiful light-filled Sevilla Square space became available, we jumped on it! And also, who doesn’t want to be in Santa Barbara!

What are you most coveting in the store right now? Well, everything, but especially our selection of sofas. My favorite furniture line right now is Spectra Home. They make high-performance, washable slip-covered pieces with amazing fabrics. I can’t get enough of their twill/linen and cotton/jute. When you have something like a cotton/jute blend, it’s like a pair of blue jeans, and it’s just going to bet better with time.

A COMPLETE BATHROOM REDESIGN

aving entrusted Reed Interiors for their full kitchen renovation three years prior, a Summerland couple expanded their cottage’s renovation with a beautifully redesigned master bathroom. At the helm of the project was the renowned French designer, Gilles Clauss, who joined the Reed Interiors' team two years ago. Addressing the task of redistributing the master bathroom’s space with a comfortable and minimalistic atmosphere, Gilles incorporated his client's modern taste while respecting their budget and timeline. The client's priorities included separating the “water closets” from the main space to create more intimacy, and the division

of a “dry” area for the vanity, and a “wet” area with an Italian shower and freestanding bathtub. Utilizing only a wall of glass for separation between the dry and wet areas, Gilles' solution was effective, elegant, and efficient. For the bath vanities, medicine cabinets, countertops and integrated sinks, Gilles selected the new European supplier, PuntoTre. The result is a sleek, modern, and seamless design. Ever mindful of the complexities and disruptive nature of a bathroom remodel, Gilles and the Reed Interiors team maintained a precise attention to detail every step of the way, resulting in a beautiful renovation exceeding the client's expectations.

I N S P I R AT I O N P O I N T: Santa Barbara's close proximity to the Santa Ynez Mountain Range makes for some great hiking opportunities. The most popular trails are found in the front country. Try a local favorite, Inspiration Point via Jesusita Trail. At around 2.5 miles round trip, this hike is doable for most hikers and rewards with one of the most stunning views of the city and Pacific. Take Tunnel Road all the way to the end - parking is limited. The trail begins on a paved fire road and at the end of this road, head straight up the dirt road. o W B L L oF GoLD U F L U o S A Lablabi, known as “poor man’s stew” in Tunisia, is anything but - Chef AYDA ROBANA’S take it’s bursting with rich flavors, bright ingredients, and promises to satisfy the fiercest of fall appetites. This dish speaks to my heart in more ways than one. It's a hearty and satisfying one-pot meal. In Tunisia, it's known as the "poor man's stew" because the ingredients are simple. I first had it with my dad in my grandmother's neighborhood at a sandwich shop called Ammi Nasser. I remember smelling the spicy cumin-filled broth and devouring the chickpeas and leaving the garnishes to the side. As a young adult, my friends and I would stop for a 3:00 am bowl of Lablabi on our way home from a night of dancing at the clubs. Now it's a nourishing meal I make in the fall and winter months for my family, friends, and clients. I've added a few unconventional twists, starting with tomato paste and ending with kale. Lablabi is a great vegan dish, but as an option, you can add an egg or a bit of good quality tuna on top when serving.

IngreDients 1 pound dried chickpeas (garbanzo beans), soaked overnight (or 4 15-ounce cans of chickpeas, rinsed and drained) 1/4 cup good quality olive oil 2 carrots, finely chopped 1 medium yellow or white onion, finely chopped 2 stalks celery, finely chopped 6 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons cumin 1 lemon, juiced 1 tablespoon tomato paste 2 tablespoons Tunisian harissa 2 bay leaves 1 tablespoon salt (optional) 8 cups of water or stock 2 cups of stemmed kale, finely chopped

Garnish opTions • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped • An extra dollop of harissa • A squeeze of lemon • Handful of capers • Raw egg yolk or coddled egg • A scoop of good quality tuna • A drizzle of olive oil

Directions Soak chickpeas overnight. Drain and rinse. In a large stockpot or Dutch oven, gently warm the olive oil and add the carrot, onion, and celery. Soften for 5-10 minutes. Add garlic, cumin, lemon juice, tomato paste, and harissa, and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes. Add rinsed, drained chickpeas and 8 cups of liquid (either water or stock). Add two bay leaves and salt to taste. Bring to a boil and simmer for 1-2 hours. If substituting canned chickpeas for fresh, simmer for about 30 minutes. Add kale and garnish with your choice of toppings. Enjoy!
