Pop into the Montecito store to see their soulful collection of kicks. 1268 Coast Village Road, 805.324.4194, baskecalifornia.com CAFFE LUXXE is on a mission to bring Northern Italian-style espresso to Montecito, with a focus on a classic dark chocolate and caramel base flavor profile with a hint of jasmine. Indulge in a seasonally rotating collection of small-batch single-origin brewed coffees, alternative dairy-free milks, and fresh daily baked pastries, including gluten-free options. 1014 Coast Village Road, 310.394.2222, caffeluxxe.com Local fashion designer CATHERINE GEE, who recently opened a flagship store at The Mill, is best known for variations of her signature silk slip dress and coveted collection of resort-driven pieces. Continually inspired by the southern California palette and climate, her designs are also informed by the light and tone of the Mediterranean. The result is a beautiful melding of flowing, feminine, and effortless Santa Barbara style with the clean lines of an understated European influence. 414 E. Calling all oenophiles and wine nubies alike, J. WILKES is set to open a State Street tasting room this fall. Stop by, swirl a pour, and taste the reason why they believe the greatest value and expression of a wine-growing area is the careful blending of vineyards and harvest dates. 35 State Street, jwilkes.com For a modern, non-conventional take on traditional Italian cuisine check out new State Street eatery OPPI'Z BISTRO. Owner Guido Oppizzi has reinterpreted the traditional concept of the pizzeria by designing a unique menu, including a novel assortment of gourmet pizzas, prepared with a secret recipe of naturally slow-24 hour-fermented dough. Try the black pizza dough, a delicious salad, savory cheesecake, or choose from a variety of vegetarian and glutenfree options. 1026 State Street, 805.770.7390, oppiz-sb.com The newest addition to the Funk Zone line-up is RODEO OF THE ARTS GALLERY. The warehouse turned art gallery featuring Wallace Piatt's Pop Americana works, is devoid of even the slightest hint of high-brow snobbery. Here, all lovers of art are welcome! Be sure to head next door to check out the gallery's sister store, Loveworn, where there's always something creative happening. 11 Anacapa Street,@wallaceisart
Rodeo of the Arts Gallery
Located on the outer edges of the Funk Zone, but every bit as happening and funky, is the restaurant-taproom mashup known as THE PROJECT. The food component is an extension of the wildly popular upscale Mexican street food restaurant CORAZON COCINA. And like a marriage made in heaven, the adjoining Taproom offers craft brews from CAPTAIN FATTY'S plus a mix of beers from other local breweries, as well as locally produced ciders, meads, and Juns. 214 State Street, 805.869.2820, theprojectsb.com

y Rosé, riesling, sparkling wine and an ice-cold rice lager - all go well with the spice and the diverse flavors in the Tyger Tyger mix.
PEOPLE’S CHOICE
Popular Khao Soi curry like you’d find in northeastern Thailand here with egg noodles and braised pork, garnished with chopped cilantro, red onion, bean sprouts and house-fermented mustard greens.
COCO-NUTTY
The chef ’s favorite ingredient? “Easy,” he says. “Coconut. Paired with lemongrass and lime, it makes a great base.” Try it here in a kaffir-lime-cured local rockfish, or the vegan Malaysian curried cauliflower served over housemade coconut yogurt.
A SIMPLE FINALE
Sticky rice with mango and coconut may be the most soothing dessert ever. You can also get it with Fruity Pebbles on top. (Hey, the chef digs it.) And don’t miss the organic Monkeyshine soft-serve ice cream served in a Korean-style koi-embossed waffle cone.
TYGER TYGER: HEART & SOUL OF SOUTHEAST ASIA
It’s the place for thoughtful, playful, highly flavorful food served with an utter lack of pretense in the heart of the Funk Zone. Just look for the pink lanterns in front. FLAVOR PROFILE Traditional ingredients are the big draw, says Chef Daniel Palaima. “I like how bright, healthy and diverse regional Southeast Asian cooking is, and we try to paint an image of that with our food.” Chef Daniel Palaima

THE PROJECT A NEW PULSE ON LOWER S TAT E
WHAT HAPPENS when two great local places for food and drink collide? In this case, the happy crash has resulted in The Project. The restaurant-taproom mashup at the edge of the Funk Zone offers a tantalizing food-and-drink experience for lovers of fantastic Mexican street food and a range of familiar, exotic, and experimental craft beverages. It’s the essence of 21st-century Santa Barbara dining: everything is well-defined and made with purpose and integrity, but also mixed, matched and intermingled. The food vision is an extension of Corazon Cocina in the Public Market, beloved for its upscale, habit-forming Mexican street food. Shared small plates are the norm here, but there are also steaks, whole grilled fish and even burgers. The Project’s liquid component, Taproom, has the signature of the popular Captain Fatty’s in Goleta but goes beyond. It

offers four permanent craft brews, plus a rotating mix of beers in many styles from Captain Fatty’s and other local breweries, as well as locally made ciders, meads and Juns. Corazon also has a full bar with a terrific mix of tequilas and smoky mezcals, and cocktails that complement the food. One, the Strawberry Fields, is inspired by the workers who pick the Oxnard strawberries featured in the drink, along with tequila, mint, elderflower, lime and agave. Best of all, you can roam freely between both places, landing where you will to enjoy food, drinks and friends. The Project Corazon Cocina & Taproom

CHILL SPOT: LOS OLIVOS WINE MERCHANT & CAFE CHASING YOUR FAVORITE varietal along rural roads in the Santa Ynez Valley can be a blast. But sometimes - like when it’s hot or raining or you just want to chill it’s nice to settle in someplace where the food is farm-to-table fresh, the welcome is warm, the pretense is non-existent, and wine offerings from Santa Barbara to Mendocino are right at your fingertips. Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café is just such a place. Choose from the wraparound bar, the comfortable dining room, or the shaded outdoor tables in front, and let the enjoyment begin. Proprietors Sam and Shawnda Marmorstein provide much of the produce from their organic family farm, about a mile away, adding a seasonal signature to “Mary’s chicken,” homemade gnocchi with seasonal vegetables, salads that are fresh-picked crisp and other dishes. Feel like having just a beer and fries? Then get that, or a dessert to share or a whole meal. “It’s about providing the experience the customer wants, whatever it is,” Shawnda says. “That and providing a place where people can meet local winemakers,” which happens here at special monthly events. Happy hour runs from 3-6 pm weekdays, with value-priced bar food, beer and wine. It’s a good time to try the Marmorsteins’ first Bordeauxstyle blend, bottled under the Bernat family label.
"It’s about providing the experience the customer wants, whatever it is."

LOCAL LIBATIONS DART COFFEE CO. IN THE GARDEN
Erika Carter and David Dart, the couple who own and operate Dart Coffee Co., are true Funk Zone locals. They live on the main drag, Yanonali Street, a stone's throw from their coffee shop and roastery. Erika, an accomplished artist, paints across the street from the coffee shop at Green House Studios, a space she shares with fellow artists Virginia McCracken and Liz Brady. Earlier this year her son, Carter Hallman, and his partner, Sami Weiss, established Funk Zone Farm on the property. The verdant plot, now known as The Garden @ Green House Studios, is maintained by friends and family. Dart Coffee Co.'s roasted-onthe-premises coffee is as good as it gets, and it's a fine thing to sit at the shop and enjoy a perfect cup and a pastry. Now, there is a new perk to the experience. When ordering, you might be told, "The Garden is open." That means you can order your goodies, carry them across the street, and choose a table under the trees among the raised beds loaded with seasonal organic produce and flowers. Sit back, settle in, and listen to the birdsong while connecting with friends in this unexpected urban oasis.

BIEN NACIDO AND SOLOMON HILLS
LOCAL LIBATIONS
Visitors enjoy a delectable pour in the Los Olivos tasting room; Tasting Room Manager Jason Villalobos; Four of the many award-winning vintages produced by Bien Nacido.
Anyone familiar with Santa Barbara County wines knows the magic words “Bien Nacido”, the name of the renowned vineyard located in the Santa Maria American Viticultural Area (AVA). It’s also the name of the venerable Bien Nacido & Solomon Hills Tasting Room in Los Olivos. In 1973, brothers Bob and Steve Miller, whose family had been farming the Central Coast for 100 years, planted 300 acres of cool-weather-loving Burgundian varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These many years later, grapes from the acclaimed vineyard — now 900 acres and including Syrah as well — remain in tremendous demand. Consistently highly-rated varietal wines born of the vineyard are available at the tasting room in Los Olivos, a
relaxed, pedestrian-friendly town focused on wine, food, antiques, art and good times in the heart of Santa Barbara wine country. Novices can gain wine knowledge in the tasting room, experts will find benchmarks of the Santa Maria AVA style, and on Saturdays, everyone can enjoy music that enhances the experience. If you’ll be gathering with friends, consider reserving the back room, which seats 15, for a private tasting. With a pedigree that includes the Ritz-Carlton Bacara, new Tasting Room Manager Jason Villalobos is infusing the tasting experience with a full dose of Southern California energy and style.

CEBADA WINERY & TASTING ROOM
Cebada Estate Vineyard, Winery and Tasting Room are the realization of proprietor Sandra Newman's dream. This owner, winemaker and horticulturist takes an Old World approach to producing beautifully aged wines that have clean flavors and are low in alcohol. Enjoy Cebada's Sparkling Blanc et Noir (with no added sugar); the bright, crisp Rosé of Pinot Noir; Chardonnays created in the style of France’s Chablis region, and balanced Pinot Noirs you would think come from Burgundy. FALL/WINTER 2019
GOING LOCAL Since launching The Shopkeepers two years ago, business and life partners Patti Pagliei Simpson and John Simpson, have developed a proven formula for their experimental retail, art, and event gallery. It goes something like this. First, secure a premium Funk Zone location, then fill the space with locally made goods and gifts from afar. Next, host artists, musicians, writers, and invite community members and visitors to join in on all of the fun. And voila - you've got one of the most exciting and enjoyable retail concepts between L.A. and San Francisco. Below, the duo talks a little shop and gives us some insight into this sweet spot. TRIED, TRUSTED, AND TRUE
The Shopkeepers concept is built around the idea of being a trusted community hub that carries mindfully curated merchandise from locals and other brands, that represents and resonates with the SB vibe and lifestyle. The store, also designed to host special events, is where good memories are made and knowledge and ideas exchanged.
EPIC EPICENTER
The Funk Zone and shop itself is just an easy place to be all day long - it's right at the center of everything. The people coming through our doors usually enter in a pretty good mood and if not, after hanging out with us for a while definitely leave in a better one!
ON CURATING A DIVERSE GALLERY OF GOODS
It took us a while to zero in on the different categories that fit well together for our kind of customer. We have generally found that people respond to goods that intrigue, inspire, and surprise. We work hard to make sure our inventory is continually evolving and consistently awesome.
SPOUSAL SUPPORT
Being business partners and life partners comes pretty naturally. You have to be good at going with the flow because there are so many plates spinning. And you need to know when it's okay to invade the other's space with a business concern - or not!
CURRENTLY CRUSHING ON
We are totally coveting locally-based, international surf and travel photographer Seth de Roulet's amazing and inspired photos. Wardrobe updates are ongoing as we shop from the store for our clothes all the time! The new collections from Taylor Stitch and Anine Bing also top our list for the season. And, we can't do without our Marvis toothpaste!
REAL COMMUNITY
The Shopkeepers serves double duty as the Waxing Poetic flagship store - the jewelry line Patti founded in 2002 - replete with the entire collection.
We build community by keeping it real, yo! Everyone wants to hang with our staff and be a part of the energy and honesty of all involved. Plus, our Waxing Poetic jewelry line has a great following and keeps people coming back for more. 137 Anacapa St., Ste A • 805.883.3122 • theshopkeepers-sb.com

FALL/WINTER 2019
GOING LOCAL For over 30 years and counting, Irwin Eve and his wife Salli, owners of the fine eyewear gallery OCCHIALI, have had a significant impact on how their clients see Santa Barbara and the world. Below, Irwin talks about his favorite frames, fabulous staff, and finding the perfect pair. LOCAL LONGEVITY
One reason for our longevity is that we strive to offer a premier experience to our clients. A little over thirty-one years ago, we were fortunate enough to open the first of our two Occhiali - which means “eyeglasses in Italian - shops. Coast Village Road continues to be an excellent central location for the Santa Barbara and Montecito communities. Also, shout outs to our wonderful nationally-acclaimed staff of nine licensed opticians and our longtime graphic designer/photographer, Kim Reierson - they are huge contributors to our enduring success.
A SHARED VISION
Salli, my business partner and wife, and I have separate designated responsibilities. She handles all the business parts and oversees both stores. I manage the day to day operations of the CVR shop. There are moments of disagreements, as we see operations from different angles, but both recognize our goals are the same.
A FEAST OF FRAMES
The fun part is deciding which collections ultimately make the cut and into our inventory of top international designers. We annually attend shows in New York and Las Vegas and have recently witnessed a growth in new independent eyewear designers who are rocking it, with superb quality and artistry. These small manufacturers in France, Japan, Germany, and even the US take such pride in their collections.
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
We help clients find the perfect pair by asking questions. Our staff is very good at assisting in the selection process. Also, getting to know each client makes it a lot easier. There is a trust generated with the collaboration.
CURRENTLY COVETING
I am a huge fan of the eyewear collection, Jacques Marie Mage, which is produced in small batches in Japan's Fukui prefecture. On my radar for the NY show is Piero Massaro, a new collection from Italy. I always reach for anything by Oliver Peoples, Mr. Leight, and Theo. Salli loves frames from Anne et Valentin, Lafont, and Sospiri.
FAMILY TIES
"On my radar from the NY show is Piero Massaro, a new collection from Italy." Irwin Eve
Salli and I are both UCSB graduates, and we raised our children here. Our daughter, Samantha, returned to Santa Barbara 10 years ago and is the artistic director of Out of the Box Theatre Company. Noah, our son, currently works close by in Los Angeles with Horizon Media.

Rowan Boutique
Tell us about yourself and your business. I’m a proud Southern California native, single mom of two boys in college, beach girl, paddle boarder, runner, and I love empowering women to feel good about themselves. And I just celebrated my fourth “birthday” as the owner of Rowan Boutique on Santa Claus Lane Padaro Beach. How did you land in retail? I started working at Nordstrom in my early years in college and soon discovered that sales came easy for me. Also, I loved creating my own unique clothing pieces, like taking plain denim jackets and adorning them with a little bling. Once I started wearing them all of my family and friends wanted their own blinged-out jackets, so I started making and selling them. And while not exactly fashion retail, when my kids were growing up, I owned and ran a family construction company, which provided invaluable business experience.

What’s the best part about owning a business practically on the beach? My amazing customers! I love the vibe on Santa Claus Lane, and the beach just makes everyone happy. I also adore all the businesses on the “Lane” - we all complement and support each other. This area is very special and has a lot of fun history. Was there a specific moment or event that inspired you to set up shop in SB? I lived inland, had one boy in college and the other one on the way and knew once the nest was empty, I wanted to live near the beach. I searched for months before finding Rowan and the moment I did, I quit my medical sales job. I then committed to investing in myself and took a leap of faith to pursue my true passion - and the rest is history! (continued on page 68)

Meet KATIE KOSKI, owner of beloved clothing boutique CHAPALA & PARKER. Her commitment to style and offering au courant goods at an easy price point turned a weekend pop-up shop into a permanent locale. Below she talks about her light-filled, Sevilla Square store, how she defines Santa Barbara style, her favorite fashion season, and more. Pop Up to Permanent
My younger sisters and I had a successful weekend pop up boutique here, with clothing and my sister Jill’s hand-made jewelry line. We had a great time, so when the opportunity to create a full-time boutique came up we went for it! And seven years later, here we are in the same great space.
Enjoying the Ride
The boutique, along with my life, has evolved so much since opening. We love keeping up with the latest styles and trends while still maintaining our special Chapala & Parker vibe. The collections we bring in continue to get better and better. Also, I was seven months pregnant with my first child when we opened, and I now have two kids with my husband, who by the way, is a lifelong SB local. We love raising our family here and continue to grow, thrive, and enjoy the ride!
The C&P Experience
The first thing most customers notice is how beautiful and inviting the store is. Everyone loves the large windows that perfectly frame the cross street corner and our namesakes, Chapala and Parker. Next, they notice the selection of surprisingly affordable, easyto-wear clothing and our helpful and friendly girls. Our sweet spot is airy, stylish, and always on-trend without feeling trendy.
Luxe Not Bust
With years of experience attending trade shows and developing relationships with showrooms in L.A. we’ve not only learned how to source high-quality items with reasonable price points, but also how to spot one-of-a-kind well-priced luxe pieces not seen at other area boutiques. At Chapala & Parker, you can buy one of the adorable wallets we carry and still have money left to put in it!
On SB Style
Santa Barbara is a unique, eclectic place, and I think the style here reflects that. How each individual expresses that differs, so we strive to have items for our diverse clientele. But, if we are talking about an overall vibe, the outdoor lifestyle and beautiful yearround weather here play into how people dress. It’s relaxed and California beachy but in an SB specific lifestyle way. Everything, from the surf and equestrian cultures, Farmer’s Market Saturdays, to casual dining and wine tasting, mix to make it feel bohemian and even a bit hippy, but with classic and polished elements.
Fave Fall Look
The fall/winter fashion season is my absolute favorite! I love all of the chunky knits we currently have - don’t ask me to choose just one - paired with some fabulous dark wash jeans, and cute booties. Of course, I’d also throw some stripes in there somewhere.

GOING LOCAL We recently met up with Montecito-based interior designer, MARC GELINAS in his new Upper Village antique gallery and design studio to discuss antiques, aesthetics, and his harmonious design philosophy. With an impressive vita - a BFA from Pratt Institute, working with renowned designers in New York, time in Paris, and projects from coast to coast - how did you eventually land in Santa Barbara? Simply for a change of lifestyle and a need to get out of the snow! What informs or inspires your design aesthetic? Historical architecture and antiques, plus the use of luxury textiles, blended with sturdy textiles for comfort, wear, and opulence. How do you strike a balance between form and function when designing with fine antiques? Antiques can drop into any environment, from a very modern glass house to a traditional home. I often use them for additional seating or special walls. How has your design philosophy evolved throughout your career? My taste has changed a bit to be a little more sparse, but overall, my training is in scale, form, and function. As long as these principles are in harmony, the overall look will always be correct. What is your favorite project to date and why? A penthouse in NYC, where I discovered, after removing a dropped ceiling, a twentyfoot from the floor to roof gorgeous vaulted gothic ceiling. It was once used as a private chapel when the penthouse was part of a triplex apartment. What else should people know about Marc Normand Gelinas Interior Design? I work around my clients' tastes and preferences, so their home reflects who they are. I never cookie-cutter my taste into projects. On the next page see a selection of fine antique finds, previous projects, and presentation inspiration that imbues Marc Normand Gelinas Interior Design's divine aesthetic.

What are you most coveting in the store right now? I live in fun, stylish, beachy-casual looks in soft fabrics. This pretty much describes all of the collections at Rowan, but if I had to choose one, I’d say it would be something from our new line Xirena. I love their easy shirting, colorful sweaters, and super sexy, yet comfy underpinnings.

Home Santa Barbara
Tell us about yourself and your business. In my early 20’s while at home raising my kids, I spent endless hours flipping through decor and design magazines. I had no money at the time, but plenty of inspiration and passion and knew that I wanted to one day own a home store. Fast forward to 2016 to when I opened Home Santa Barbara. It was a dream come true. Magnolia Home Furniture by Joanna Gaines provided the initial motivation and still remains an integral part of our story, but over the past two and a half years we’ve added so many other great lines - a little of everything, from Modern Farmhouse to Boho. How did you land in retail? A few years ago, when I was ready to take on a new challenge I googled “the next big thing” and up came an article about Warren Buffett partnering with Joanna Gaines to bring her new furniture line into his furniture marts. And that was that - I knew instantly that I wanted to open a store, anchored by her collection. I immediately sent off the application to carry the line, and after an initial rejection and several months of pleading phone calls to their headquarters, I finally got a yes! What’s the best part about owning a business in Santa Barbara? That it allowed me to go into business with my daughter, Lynsey and her husband Jason Trueman, who live here with their two kids. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know my Santa Barbara clientele. When you spend time on the store floor, you build a relationship of trust with your customers, and they want to come back and buy from you. Was there a specific moment or event that inspired you to set up shop in SB? As I mentioned, my daughter and her family live here, and ultimately, I wanted to partner with her in business. So when this beautiful light-filled Sevilla Square space became available, we jumped on it! And also, who doesn’t want to be in Santa Barbara!

What are you most coveting in the store right now? Well, everything, but especially our selection of sofas. My favorite furniture line right now is Spectra Home. They make high-performance, washable slip-covered pieces with amazing fabrics. I can’t get enough of their twill/linen and cotton/jute. When you have something like a cotton/jute blend, it’s like a pair of blue jeans, and it’s just going to bet better with time.

GOING LOCAL When Bob Bryant opened his 900 square-foot jewelry store in 1965, he probably couldn’t imagine that almost fifty-five years later, the business would still be there serving some of its original customers, along with their children and even grandchildren. But Bryant & Sons, Ltd. remains in the same location in State Street’s historic El Paseo shopping area, with son Mike leading it since 1981. A lot has changed in all that time. State Street has grown up, and the original tiny studio-front store has been transformed into a beautiful 4500 square-foot multi-level jewelry salon. But the defining hallmarks of Bryant & Sons, service and selection, remain untainted by time. The service is as personalized as ever with certified gemologists and master goldsmiths on staff, and their in-house workshop is invaluable for anyone considering a custom-crafted piece. The selection of distinguished jewelry and timepieces features the world’s finest lines, including Cartier, Patek Philippe, Breitling, Baume & Mercier, Michael M, Scott Kay, Roberto Coin, Mikimoto, as well as Baccarat crystal. What’s the secret to such long-running success? Mike attributes it to being an authentically homegrown
Santa Barbara business. Locals have owned and staffed the store for decades establishing long-term relationships with its customers, as well as nationwide clientele including celebrities and entertainers. That indelible local connection also feeds the Bryants’ inclination to give back to the community generously supporting local schools, The Daniel Bryant Youth & Family Treatment Center, the Council on Drug and Alcohol and other area nonprofits. Bryant & Sons is synonymous with luxury - they once sold a 30-carat diamond wedding ring - but their wide-ranging inventory includes something for everyone. If only Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly had such access, the opening scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s might have included much more than just window shopping.

GOING LOCAL No trip to the Santa Ynez Valley feels complete without taking a stroll through J. WOESTE in LOS OLIVOS. On a recent excursion over the pass, we popped into this horticultural haven. Luckily for us, the owner and visionary behind this gorgeous garden and home decor store, Jefferson Woeste, was there to share a bit about his magical Los Olivos location. What inspired the J. Woeste concept? After years of operating a large retail nursery, my husband Bruce and I realized our passion truly was to have a home store. We wanted succulents as a focus, balanced with treasures for both the home and garden. What's the best part about having this enchanting spot in Los Olivos? We love hearing people say that our space makes them feel happy and our clients love to share J. Woeste in Los Olivos with friends. It’s like they discovered us and have to share - discovery is everything. How do you go about curating everything from the most beautiful begonias we've ever seen to genuinely unique garden and home goods? We have been sourcing product for over 21 years from the Central Coast and all parts of the US - trade shows in Atlanta, New York, Dallas, Las Vegas, and Seattle. Part of our journey has been to find the most talented artisans and highest quality plant growers available. We enjoy bringing these products back for the “J. Woeste Team” to create an exceptional experience for our customers. What's the last item from the garden or shop that you couldn't do without that now graces your home? We are currently landscaping our home, and couldn’t resist the granite bench that now greets guests as they walk the path to our front door.
Shop the J. Woeste in Los Olivos garden for a vast collection of potted succulents, outdoor sculpture, resonant windchimes, artisan ceramics, and peruse the 114-year-old farmhouse for homewares, entertaining essentials, luxurious lotions, bright begonias, cheeky gifts and more.
Tell us what the secret is to J. Woeste's longevity and how you have built such a loyal customer base over the years. I don’t feel it’s a secret, or that there is a secret. We are grateful to our customers for allowing us to be creative in our oasis in the Santa Ynez Valley. I think they are the secret - we can't do this without them!

A COMPLETE BATHROOM REDESIGN
H
aving entrusted Reed Interiors for their full kitchen renovation three years prior, a Summerland couple expanded their cottage’s renovation with a beautifully redesigned master bathroom. At the helm of the project was the renowned French designer, Gilles Clauss, who joined the Reed Interiors' team two years ago. Addressing the task of redistributing the master bathroom’s space with a comfortable and minimalistic atmosphere, Gilles incorporated his client's modern taste while respecting their budget and timeline. The client's priorities included separating the “water closets” from the main space to create more intimacy, and the division
of a “dry” area for the vanity, and a “wet” area with an Italian shower and freestanding bathtub. Utilizing only a wall of glass for separation between the dry and wet areas, Gilles' solution was effective, elegant, and efficient. For the bath vanities, medicine cabinets, countertops and integrated sinks, Gilles selected the new European supplier, PuntoTre. The result is a sleek, modern, and seamless design. Ever mindful of the complexities and disruptive nature of a bathroom remodel, Gilles and the Reed Interiors team maintained a precise attention to detail every step of the way, resulting in a beautiful renovation exceeding the client's expectations.

This dish speaks to my heart in more ways than one. It's a hearty and satisfying one-pot meal. In Tunisia, it's known as the "poor man's stew" because the ingredients are simple. I first had it with my dad in my grandmother's neighborhood at a sandwich shop called Ammi Nasser. I remember smelling the spicy cumin-filled broth and devouring the chickpeas and leaving the garnishes to the side. As a young adult, my friends and I would stop for a 3:00 am bowl of Lablabi on our way home from a night of dancing at the clubs. Now it's a nourishing meal I make in the fall and winter months for my family, friends, and clients. I've added a few unconventional twists, starting with tomato paste and ending with kale. Lablabi is a great vegan dish, but as an option, you can add an egg or a bit of good quality tuna on top when serving.
IngreDients 1 pound dried chickpeas (garbanzo beans), soaked overnight (or 4 15-ounce cans of chickpeas, rinsed and drained) 1/4 cup good quality olive oil 2 carrots, finely chopped 1 medium yellow or white onion, finely chopped 2 stalks celery, finely chopped 6 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons cumin 1 lemon, juiced 1 tablespoon tomato paste 2 tablespoons Tunisian harissa 2 bay leaves 1 tablespoon salt (optional) 8 cups of water or stock 2 cups of stemmed kale, finely chopped
Garnish opTions • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped • An extra dollop of harissa • A squeeze of lemon • Handful of capers • Raw egg yolk or coddled egg • A scoop of good quality tuna • A drizzle of olive oil
Directions Soak chickpeas overnight. Drain and rinse. In a large stockpot or Dutch oven, gently warm the olive oil and add the carrot, onion, and celery. Soften for 5-10 minutes. Add garlic, cumin, lemon juice, tomato paste, and harissa, and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes. Add rinsed, drained chickpeas and 8 cups of liquid (either water or stock). Add two bay leaves and salt to taste. Bring to a boil and simmer for 1-2 hours. If substituting canned chickpeas for fresh, simmer for about 30 minutes. Add kale and garnish with your choice of toppings. Enjoy!
