With their love of life, color

and creativity, artist Tami Snow and Amy Cooper of Plum Goods were a match from the day they met. As co-workers at a local company they sat side by side and bonded over life in Santa Barbara, raising daughters and finding the humor in just about everything. After opening Plum Goods in 2010, Cooper stopped by Snow’s house and fell in love with a painting on her wall. Eager to find out the name of the artist, she was thrilled to discover it was Snow, who had been painting for decades but hadn’t shown her work in many years. They were quick to plan a show with her latest work, and now, many shows later, Snow is Plum Goods’ best selling artist.

Snow’s paintings are known for her confident use of line, color and form, drawing inspiration from the simple joys of everyday life. “Her work appeals to a wide range of people, from first time buyers to major celebrities. J. Woeste in Los Olivos is that rare store where it’s almost as much fun to hang out

as it is to shop - just ask the local who likes to nap here at noon. But if the napping’s good, the shopping’s better. People love surprises, and they’re everywhere at this 17-year-old indoor-outdoor store, which has become a must-stop for visitors and a favorite with locals. It’s a place to take your time, get lost and discover. “It’s like a treasure chest with a lot of whimsy,” says proprietor Jefferson Woeste. How did MH Home Design land in Montecito? We have always loved Coast Village Road and dreamed of having a store there. Since opening the showroom, we’ve met the most interesting people and have made some wonderful relationships with our clients and that has been incredibly rewarding. Tell us a bit about your backgrounds. Owner, Maureen Hemming, has been an interior designer in the Santa Barbara area and through-out the US for over 16 years. Her style is Traditional - influenced by art, light and structure. Nicole Berry, a native Californian, professional photographer and painter, has traveled and lived all over the world. As Creative Director, she infuses the design and store buying process with a twist of art. Sophia Recalde, our Director of Operations, an LA native, with a background managing musicians and events, runs the store-front, online store and serves our clientele with loads of style. Our Associate Designer, Erin McDermott, rounds out our team and brings her own unique vision and experience to the store. How do you connect with clients and help translate their visions into home design and what are some of the most unique aspects of the retail space/design services you provide? We use photographs, samples and CAD drawings, to create the style and function of a space and we have an extensive fabric library right here in the showroom. Our local clients and the designers we work with really appreciate the convenience of not having to commute to LA. We also have our own workrooms and relationships with the best furniture makers in the world. We offer drapery, hardware, custom rugs - everything you need for the home, outdoor and office space. How do you go about "curating" the retail space? We travel to Europe, New York, Santa Fe, Anguilla, Aspen and beyond. We search, read, and research to find distinctive art, artisans and furniture. We also collaborate with the best and most influential craftsman, workrooms and artists. What are your best-selling lines/brands/collections and which are exclusive to you? What is offered in your private label collections? We have our own furniture and fabric lines and are collaborating on an accessory line. We carry a boutique textile line out of London, called Evitavonni - their bedding is absolute heaven! We have also collaborated with Ralph Lauren and offer their home collection of accessories, fabrics and furniture. Currently our customers love the gorgeous hand carved onyx bowls and ceramics by Ron Dier. What else would you like for potential customers/clients to know about MH Home Design? Loyalty has its dangers. Ca’Dario chef-owner Dario Surlati jokes that if he changed his menu, he might get in trouble with his customers. “They come in for certain favorite dishes,” he says, some of which he’s been serving since the restaurant opened in 1997. Of course, who can blame the chef ’s regulars for holding him hostage to his own cooking? He’s from Lake Cuomo, and his menu reflects his northern roots in classic dishes like homemade ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta and drizzled with sage butter; whole ovenbaked branzino, an identity element of Italian cooking; and a 24-ounce bone-in rib-eye steak that’s a $36 bargain. “Authentic,” Surlati says, describing his food in a word - which is why it never gets old. But while the regulars might own the main menu, Surlati uses the daily specials to introduce rare regional dishes. From Rome, there’s baked gnocchi topped with butter, sage and Parmesan, and from Trentino, he might serve canerderli, a kind of dumpling made with bread, eggs and speck (smoked prosciutto). He also taps local sources for spot prawns, halibut, duck, quail and even venison - maybe grilled and finished in the oven with shallots, garlic and rosemary. Whale Watching Gray, Blue and Humpback Whales all migrate through the Santa Barbara Channel, breaching, spy hopping and spouting as they make their way up and down the coast. Take a Hike Santa Barbara's close proximity to the Santa Ynez Mountain Range makes for some great hiking opportunities. The most popular trails are found in the front country. Try a local favorite, Inspiration Point via Jesusita Trail. We asked Ayda Robana of Om Sweet Mama to share a few of her favorite recipes for summer entertaining. Here, her bright, fresh dishes make the most of

the season’s offerings. “This menu, along with a cold bottle of sparkling rose, is what I would serve for a light summer lunch in my garden, after a day at the beach”, says Ayda. “I believe in being intentional not only about the ingredients I use, but also how I present them - colorfully and beautifully – as a way of showing artistry on a plate.” Expressing her gratitude for the region’s bounty, she says, “We are so lucky to enjoy produce year-round from local farmers markets in the area, almost any day of the week and equally blessed by the bounties of the sea. SALMON CRUDO WITH BURRATA PREP TIME: 20 MINUTES • SERVES 4

INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 lbs sashimi grade very fresh Scottish salmon or King salmon, thinly sliced 3 Cara Cara oranges, segmented (or any citrus) 1/2 bulb of thinly shaved fennel 3 Tbsp rice wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon sugar 2 burrata balls, quartered 4-5 thinly sliced radishes 1 cup wild arugula 1 tsp white ponzu sauce 1 tsp white balsamic vinegar 2 tsp high-quality olive oil • In a small bowl, squeeze the juice from 1 orange. Quick pickle the fennel in the orange juice, rice wine vinegar, salt and sugar. Let this marinate while you assemble the other ingredients. • Peel and segment the other two oranges and set aside. • Thinly slice the radishes, using a mandolin if you have one, and set aside. • Lay out the thinly sliced salmon in the center of a serving platter. • Decorate the outer edge with arugula that has been lightly dressed with salt, white balsamic vinegar and olive oil. • Top the salmon with the pickled fennel, orange segments, and radishes. • Dress the salmon with the remaining pickling liquid. • Finish with Maldon salt (sea salt), fresh ground black pepper and a little sprinkle of ponzu. It's also nice to sprinkle on Japanese rice seasoning (optional). Serve immediately.

MEYER LEMON PANACOTTA PREP TIME: OVERNIGHT PROCESS, 25 MINUTES • SERVES 6

INGREDIENTS

SPICY GREEN SALAD WITH CITRUS MISO VINAIGRETTE PREP TIME: 15 MINUTES • SERVES 4

INGREDIENTS 1 bag spicy greens or your favorite lettuce mixture • Snap peas Purple carrots • Watermelon radish • Golden beets VINAIGRETTE: 1/2 a grapefruit • 1 small shallot • 1 clove garlic 1 small nub of ginger • 2 Tbsp rice wine vinegar • 1 Tbsp white miso • 1/3 cup olive oil • 1 tsp sesame oil TAMARI-ROASTED PEPITAS: 1 tsp tamari • 1/4 cup pepitas • Toast the pepitas in a nonstick pan over low-medium heat, then coat with tamari and allow to cool. • Finely chop the shallot. • Grate the garlic and ginger into a bowl. • Add the juice of 1/2 grapefruit. • Add the rice wine vinegar, white miso and sesame oil and whisk. • While whisking, slowly incorporate the 1/3 cup of olive oil.

3 Meyer lemons • 1/2 cup sugar + 2 Tbsp sugar • 2 Tbsp water • 2 tsp gelatin 1 cup whole milk • 2 1/2 cups heavy cream • 1 vanilla bean • With a vegetable peeler, peel the outside of the lemons. • Carefully squeeze the juice into a saucepan, removing any seeds. • Make a simple syrup using the juice of the lemons, the peel of the lemons, 1/2 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of water. Cook this down for 10-15 minutes on medium heat, until it is reduced by half and the peel is tender and candied. Allow to cool. • In a separate mixing bowl, combine 2 teaspoons gelatin and 1/2 cup of whole milk. Stir together and allow to sit for 10 minutes while you make the custard base. • In a separate sauce pan, simmer 2 1/2 cups of heavy cream and the remaining 1/2 cup of whole milk, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and the seeds and pod of a scraped vanilla bean. Heat to just before boiling and using a sieve, strain in the simple syrup mixture. Save the candied lemon peels to slice and use as a garnish. Bring the mixture back to just before boiling, stirring frequently. • Remove from heat and strain again into the mixing bowl containing the milk and gelatin mixture. Whisk well, until the gelatin dissolves. • Ladle into six 2 1/2" ramekins. Allow to cool. Then individually cover each ramekin with cling wrap and refrigerate for 6 hours or overnight. • Garnish with fresh raspberries, candied lemon peel, mint leaf, lemon curd, or creme fraiche.

Succulents FORM + FUNCTION

Santa Barbara is known for palm-lined boulevards, lush landscapes and flowing tiered fountains, but after a few years of drought, the succulent is finally getting its time in the sun.
