Whiskey + Leather
EQUALS AN EXCEP TIONAL SHOPPING EXPERIENCE Contrasting themes permeate Whiskey + Leather, the cool new lifestyle store on Coast Village Road – men’s and women’s clothing, antique treasures and the latest big looks in fashion, and a fresh bright interior, anchored by dark, worn original wooden floors. It’s these fun qualities that set this boutique apart from the crowd. Co-owners Zee Chew and Ariel Hujar, capitalized on their shared love of fashion and past experience to create this unique lifestyle brand. The name was inspired by a mutual love of cocktails, a good time and of course clothing. And they made sure that it was gender-neutral, so that men and women would feel equally comfortable shopping the store. As for the curated mix of timeless treasures and au courant ready-to-wear and accessories, the pair “wants the shopping experience to feel like you are hanging at a friend’s house, getting dressed up for a night out.” That feeling is taken a step further, as the cash wrap counter doubles as a place to display a wonderful selection of jewelry and fine spirits and where friends and customers can gather. Top-selling men’s lines include Scotch & Soda and 7 diamonds and for women, Tularosa, Monrow, Hudson, and Joah Brown. And if you are lucky enough to stop in on a day that adorable shop dogs Tugboat and Josie are “working”, expect an enthusiastic greeting from the pair. They’ve never met a customer they didn’t like.

Tami Snow
ART+ARTIST
With their love of life, color
and creativity, artist Tami Snow and Amy Cooper of Plum Goods were a match from the day they met. As co-workers at a local company they sat side by side and bonded over life in Santa Barbara, raising daughters and finding the humor in just about everything. After opening Plum Goods in 2010, Cooper stopped by Snow’s house and fell in love with a painting on her wall. Eager to find out the name of the artist, she was thrilled to discover it was Snow, who had been painting for decades but hadn’t shown her work in many years. They were quick to plan a show with her latest work, and now, many shows later, Snow is Plum Goods’ best selling artist.
Snow’s paintings are known for her confident use of line, color and form, drawing inspiration from the simple joys of everyday life. “Her work appeals to a wide range of people, from first time buyers to major celebrities. We’d love to tell you who, but we don’t sell and tell,” said Cooper. As local entrepreneurs, moms and optimists, the pairing of Snow and Plum is a celebration of happiness, friendship, family, life, love and connection. To view the current collection, purchase, or find out more about the artist, visit Plum Goods, 909 State St. • 805.845.3900 • plumgoodsstore.com DININGANDDESTINATIONS.COM

J. Woeste in Los Olivos is that rare store where it’s almost as much fun to hang out
as it is to shop - just ask the local who likes to nap here at noon. But if the napping’s good, the shopping’s better. People love surprises, and they’re everywhere at this 17-year-old indoor-outdoor store, which has become a must-stop for visitors and a favorite with locals. It’s a place to take your time, get lost and discover. “It’s like a treasure chest with a lot of whimsy,” says proprietor Jefferson Woeste. Succulents, a specialty, are ubiquitous, arranged in diverse containers and combined with each other and with decorative elements in dozens of minivignettes. Turn a corner and a new theme emerges - angels, Buddhas, frogs, birds, turtles. There’s even a hen house, and Jefferson’s two friendly dogs. The merchandise changes constantly. You can buy the biggest, most resonant wind chime ever, garden pavers in the shape of flip flops, a vivid green sculpted metal aloe plant, shovels with scenes cut out from the blades, glass and ceramics, statues, wind catchers, lamps and interior accessories, unique seasonal pieces, the best African violets and Reiger begonias, and much more. There’s a lot to see, so catch that nap before you arrive. 2356 ALAMO PINTADO AVE • LOS OLIVOS 805.693.1951 • JWOESTE.COM

Together, they handpick the boutique's unique selection of clothing, accessories, gifts and playthings. Lines like Billabong, Junk Food, and Rock Your Baby keep it cool for the boys. PORCH true to nature
Cross the threshold of Porch and enter a dreamy world, where clean, contemporary design strikes
a perfect balance with warm, comfortable living – where sustainabililty and style live in perfect harmony. Located steps from the Pacific, on Santa Claus Lane in Carpinteria, this eclectic home décor and garden shop can’t help but embody a beachy style and relaxed vibe. Porch owners Diana Dolan and Christie Boyd channel their mutual admiration for nature, as they curate the store with “what we love!” This “love” is reflected in the abundant inventory of unique gifts, tabletop, books, textiles, lighting, furnishings and other swoonworthy home décor items – all of course with a touch of eco-chic. A 3,000 square foot outdoor garden blends seamlessly with the interior space, as it showcases the best of outdoor living, including plants, garden art, outdoor furniture, containers, and a covetable selection of fire pits – a garden must for outdoor Santa Barbara entertaining. The goods move fast here, so fresh inventory hits the floor daily, which is a good thing for the legions of loyal regulars. Porch also houses an art gallery space, which rotates the works of local artists every eight weeks. So find a bit of time to take a little shelter at Porch. 3823 SANTA CLAUS LANE, CARPINTERIA • 805.684.0300 • PORCHSB.COM

provides a beautiful way for customers to express themselves with gifts of jewelry. The name Waxing Poetic embodies life’s voyage, while the words mean “speaking in a flowery or poetic fashion.” The individual words remind us that “waxing” is “to become or evolve into something else” and “poetic” means…just that, and everything related. The sentiment reflected in these handcrafted, artisanal designs, and the evocative words carved in the metals, gives voice to the universal truths of love, hope, faith, family – and a voice to the gift giver’s sentiment. Through their hearts and hands, two sisters have created collectible expressions, which commemorate moments in our lives. This versatile line was designed to allow customers to mix and match, providing the opportunity to create unique pieces of jewelry that reflect the story of life’s journey. Treasured moments can be remembered and cherished with one of many Waxing Poetic handcrafted designs. As life moves, stories grow; providing an opportunity to select additional pieces to illustrate one’s evolving journey.

MH Home Design
How did MH Home Design land in Montecito? We have always loved Coast Village Road and dreamed of having a store there. Since opening the showroom, we’ve met the most interesting people and have made some wonderful relationships with our clients and that has been incredibly rewarding. Tell us a bit about your backgrounds. Owner, Maureen Hemming, has been an interior designer in the Santa Barbara area and through-out the US for over 16 years. Her style is Traditional - influenced by art, light and structure. Nicole Berry, a native Californian, professional photographer and painter, has traveled and lived all over the world. As Creative Director, she infuses the design and store buying process with a twist of art. Sophia Recalde, our Director of Operations, an LA native, with a background managing musicians and events, runs the store-front, online store and serves our clientele with loads of style. Our Associate Designer, Erin McDermott, rounds out our team and brings her own unique vision and experience to the store. How do you connect with clients and help translate their visions into home design and what are some of the most unique aspects of the retail space/design services you provide? We use photographs, samples and CAD drawings, to create the style and function of a space and we have an extensive fabric library right here in the showroom. Our local clients and the designers we work with really appreciate the convenience of not having to commute to LA. We also have our own workrooms and relationships with the best furniture makers in the world. We offer drapery, hardware, custom rugs - everything you need for the home, outdoor and office space. How do you go about "curating" the retail space? We travel to Europe, New York, Santa Fe, Anguilla, Aspen and beyond. We search, read, and research to find distinctive art, artisans and furniture. We also collaborate with the best and most influential craftsman, workrooms and artists. What are your best-selling lines/brands/collections and which are exclusive to you? What is offered in your private label collections? We have our own furniture and fabric lines and are collaborating on an accessory line. We carry a boutique textile line out of London, called Evitavonni - their bedding is absolute heaven! We have also collaborated with Ralph Lauren and offer their home collection of accessories, fabrics and furniture. Currently our customers love the gorgeous hand carved onyx bowls and ceramics by Ron Dier. What else would you like for potential customers/clients to know about MH Home Design? We really love what we do and hope our excitement and passion continues to inspire and provide the best experience and results for our customers to enjoy the most precious space of all – their own home. 1255 COAST VILLAGE ROAD, MONTECITO 805.565.0404 • MHHOMEDESIGN.COM

YOUR
DREAM KITCHEN HAS COME TO TOWN
It awaits in the inspiring new Reed Interiors Kitchen Design showroom in downtown Santa Barbara. Stop in and let us share the best in contemporary European kitchen design in a vibrant space, created by French architect and designer Michel Clair. He and the rest of the Reed Interiors kitchen team are waiting to put you on the path to a kitchen that will really be the heart of your home. We combine years of experience with the latest technology and the finest Italian design and craftsmanship to ensure that you get the kitchen you really want, in the budget you have planned. We: Consult closely with you to understand your needs, desires and taste. • Work with you to create a budget and get the most from it. Balance beautiful form with superb function and space optimization. • Make it so that you love it. STYLES One exciting European trend is to rework the interiors of historic buildings to embrace contemporary design and functionality. In Santa Barbara, it can mean a modern kitchen renovation to complement and freshen Mission style, Spanish revival, Victorian, Ranch style - or any style. It can mean more modern or less. The “Recent Shaker” line, for instance, embodies the essence of this revered American style, updated with modern lines and innovations. 56

design can be fun and E Madison Interior Lifestyles makes sure it is. Owners, Courtney and Anthony Dever, definitely know their way around the interior design business. With a successful flagship store in South Orange County and a thriving interior architectural design firm under their belts, in the spring of 2015, they turned their attention to Montecito – where years ago they fell in love with the sense of community and the locals owned and operated boutique culture of the area. E Madison designs, which are beautifully reflected in the retail showroom space, have a warm traditional and timeless sensibility. Inspiring vignettes fill the space, making it easy to imagine how the store décor might work in your own home. The showroom, “re-imagined” seasonally with the latest buying trip finds, provides a place for customers and clients to find inspiration and to transform their home design visions into reality. The E Madison team takes pride in building long-standing relationships with their clients. This allows for each client’s personality and needs to truly become a part of the design process and finished project. In addition to their own signature private label products, E Madison is currently expanding to offer custom furniture pieces, including a fabulous reproduction of an 1830’s vintage settee. For those who enjoy instant gratification and “want it yesterday”, you’ll be happy to know that you can actually have it today, as everything in the store is available for purchase. The inventory includes luxurious linens, furniture, lighting, and accessories, as well as other décor accents, pillows, books, jewelry, gifts, rugs, dishes, candles. Whether you are up for the major overhaul or want just a few little items to spruce up your living space, explore E Madison for a fresh take on traditional home décor. 1159 COAST VILLAGE ROAD • 805.618.1810 • EMADISONHOME.COM

“We like to think we offer a classic steakhouse experience,” says Leonard Schwartz, executive chef and general manager of Lucky’s in Montecito. “What that means for us is that we want you to be very happy from the time you arrive until you’re ready to leave.” Here’s how that happens. Whether you’re a Montecito regular, a local out for a special occasion, or a visitor on vacation, you arrive at Lucky’s with high expectations. The staff appreciates that, and they work to make sure you have a warm, full experience. However you are dressed, you’re greeted warmly at the door and made to feel comfortable. You’re then shown to a table, where an attentive server takes care of you. You can order wine from an extensive list, with great choices at all prices, or a perfectly crafted cocktail, the kind befitting a fine steakhouse. Once you’ve settled in, you’re presented with a menu that “doesn’t have a lot of surprises on it and isn’t meant to,” says Schwartz. “It’s intended to satisfy the cravings people
have at a steakhouse.” That includes ten cuts of prime corn-fed Midwestern beef, plus a daily grass-fed selection. Of course, you want it cooked exactly how you order it. Surprising to some are the several simply but carefully prepared fresh-fish selections: salmon, sand dabs, Dover sole, tuna, a daily special and fresh Maine lobster. You can choose from an assortment of best-in-category steakhouse sides, such as superb creamed spinach or delectable onion rings. From steaks to sides to an after-dinner Cognac, says Schwartz, “It’s important our guests have a good time. They’re making memories, and we want them to be good.” 1279 COAST VILLAGE ROAD, MONTECITO • 805.565.7540 • LUCKYS-STEAKHOUSE.COM

Ca s a Bl a n c a THE “HOUSE” TEQUILA TAKES ON NEW MEANING August will mark the five-year anniversary of Casa Blanca Restaurant & Cantina and its unique mix of fresh Mexican food, cool décor, expansive patios, big-screen TVs, and good-time vibe. And with 140 brands of tequila in stock, the sipping’s outstanding, too, whether it’s a classic Margarita, an inventive specialty cocktail or a connoisseur’s super-premium añejo. In the past year, Casa Blanca has raised its already top-shelf tequila game, introducing a house tequila from the venerable Herradura tequila distillery. A Casa Blanca crew traveled to Herradura’s historic hacienda in Jalisco, the heart of tequila country, and spent the day with the master distiller, walking the agave fields, and watching the harvest and the distillation process. They sipped from several barrels and purchased their favorite, a reposado blend aged a year in American oak. The tequila was bottled and labeled at the hacienda, and Casa Blanca Herradura Reposado tequila was born. Since then, six staff have made three more trips to Herradura to purchase three more barrels. And recently Casa Blanca started a similar program with Patron, buying a barrel of extra añejo (aged 34 months) at a price that allows them to pour what could be a $50 shot for $15. The bar crew is inspired and ready to share stories - and new tequilas - to inspire you. Salud! 330 STATE STREET • 805.845.8966 • CASABLANCASB.COM DININGANDDESTINATIONS.COM

Traditional Italian Cuisine
Loyalty has its dangers. Ca’Dario chef-owner Dario Surlati jokes that if he changed his menu, he might get in trouble with his customers. “They come in for certain favorite dishes,” he says, some of which he’s been serving since the restaurant opened in 1997. Of course, who can blame the chef ’s regulars for holding him hostage to his own cooking? He’s from Lake Cuomo, and his menu reflects his northern roots in classic dishes like homemade ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta and drizzled with sage butter; whole ovenbaked branzino, an identity element of Italian cooking; and a 24-ounce bone-in rib-eye steak that’s a $36 bargain. “Authentic,” Surlati says, describing his food in a word - which is why it never gets old. But while the regulars might own the main menu, Surlati uses the daily specials to introduce rare regional dishes. From Rome, there’s baked gnocchi topped with butter, sage and Parmesan, and from Trentino, he might serve canerderli, a kind of dumpling made with bread, eggs and speck (smoked prosciutto). He also taps local sources for spot prawns, halibut, duck, quail and even venison - maybe grilled and finished in the oven with shallots, garlic and rosemary. Add wines from California, Italy, Chile, France and Argentina, and a dessert list of carefully made classics, and you’ll be defending the menu against change, too. 37 EAST VICTORIA STREET • 805.884.9419 • CADARIO.NET

Diners entering Jill’s Place for the first time might wonder why a track with meat hooks runs along the ceiling or why an array of sharpening steels hangs in a boxed display. Talk to Jill Shalhoob though - easy enough, since she’s always here checking on her loyal, mainly local, customers - and cast your eyes on the neon sign that reads “The Butcher’s Daughter,” and it all adds up. Those things are here because this unpretentious restaurant used to be her fathers’ butcher shop, and Jill essentially grew up here. After her dad expanded and moved, she opened a deli, then the restaurant. It’s all about roots, tradition and family, the kind of place visitors want to find - and sometimes do. Open from morning ’til night, Jill’s Place offers great values on perfectly cooked steaks, a sensational open-face meatloaf sandwich and plenty of burgers and other sandwiches, salads and comfort-food favorites like split pea soup and spaghetti Bolognese made according to Jill’s grandmother’s recipe. Jill’s dad taught her how to season and cut meat, and she still does. The coffee’s good, and the bar offers Happy Hour Cosmos and Martinis for $7. Order a mixed appetizer plate of steak, chicken and sausage bites, and settle in. 632 SANTA BARBARA ST. • 805.963.0378 • JILLSPLACESB.COM

a Black Sheep to love The world needs more places like The Black Sheep, the colorful, friendly, innovative restaurant that opened in spring 2015. Convivial owner, Ruben Perez, loves to share and talk about good food and wine, and in the kitchen, his father, Chef Robert, brings passion and decades of haute cuisine experience to a menu of shareable plates featuring Latin and Asian accents. The thinly sliced scallop crudo comes with a candied carrot purée, frisée, scallions, ginger-chili mirin and “white” soy vinaigrette, while the beef bone- marrow bruschetta features the rich marrow balanced with a parsley-shallot salad, whole-grain mustard and a red wine sauce. Tender meat slides effortlessly from wild-boar ribs to combine with Asian cabbage and a unique blend of Asian fish sauce with ginger and sriracha. The buratta salad is a benchmark of its kind that also includes fresh in-season fruit, and the daily-changing risotto makes a great shared dish. The shoyu ramen with slow-roasted pork belly and roasted shiitake mushrooms provides a tantalizing surprise for noodle lovers. Larger dishes include sea bass with chorizo and a braised New Zealand lamb shank with Indian spices. Nearly forty microbrew beers are available by the bottle, as is a well-considered list of primarily California wines. 36 EAST ORTEGA STREET • 805.965.1113 • THEBLACKSHEEPSB.COM

For an authentic French experience in the heart of State Street, visit Relais de Paris – Entrecôte. Similar to all realis in France, Relais de Paris in Santa Barbara serves simple, honest food in a beautiful welcoming Parisian setting. Relais de Paris offers classic fare made with organic local ingredients and served in an inviting 1920s dining room. Antique brass-and-copper chandeliers hang from the 20-foot ceilings above brick walls, a lovely bar, hardwood floors, banquettes, and tables topped with white cloths and butcher paper. Chef Michael Bertho, who was born in Brittany, makes sure everything is done just right. The star of the menu is the restaurant’s namesake entrecôte - a steak beloved in France. Here, it’s served in classic style - perfectly cooked, thinly sliced and topped by a tangy secret green sauce that follows a complex lineage back to 1959. Alongside is a pile of slender, perfectly crisp frites made in the slow, time-honored way, as is the deeply flavored Frenchonion soup. (The onions spend six hours caramelizing over low heat.) The rest of the menu follows suit, including escargots in garlic-parsley butter, croque monsieur, Pacific mussels in wine sauce, roasted chicken, omelettes, crêpes and tasty desserts. Open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch.

We asked Ayda Robana of Om Sweet Mama to share a few of her favorite recipes for summer entertaining. Here, her bright, fresh dishes make the most of
the season’s offerings. “This menu, along with a cold bottle of sparkling rose, is what I would serve for a light summer lunch in my garden, after a day at the beach”, says Ayda. “I believe in being intentional not only about the ingredients I use, but also how I present them - colorfully and beautifully – as a way of showing artistry on a plate.” Expressing her gratitude for the region’s bounty, she says, “We are so lucky to enjoy produce year-round from local farmers markets in the area, almost any day of the week and equally blessed by the bounties of the sea. The seafood in Santa Barbara is among the highest-quality in the United States and is coveted and revered by chefs and diners everywhere.” Ayda Robana, a private chef and caterer in Santa Barbara for the last eight years, was among the first chefs in Santa Barbara to introduce popup meals in various locations around town. Her style is highly influenced by her world travels and a bi-cultural (Tunisian /American) upbringing. In celebration of her North African roots, she loves to tell stories through food and gather loved ones around a table to enjoy a meal together. OmSweetMama.com • 805.837.9009

Succulents FORM + FUNCTION
Santa Barbara is known for palm-lined boulevards, lush landscapes and flowing tiered fountains, but after a few years of drought, the succulent is finally getting its time in the sun. The word “succulent” comes from the Latin word sucus, meaning juice, or sap. These juicy plants store water in various structures, such as leaves and stems, making them the ideal for dry times. They are low maintenance, add texture and color to the garden, come in a wild variety of shapes and sizes, and they’re just plain cool. El Nino or not, the sweet succulent will continue to shine.
