Earth Day, inspired by a massive oil spill off of the coast of Santa Barbara in 1969, is now celebrated around the globe every April 22nd, but for Amy Cooper, owner of the sustainable lifestyle store Plum Goods, Earth Day is every day. She honors this local legacy by offering products at her downtown location that are made to last, better for the planet and the people making them, and that you can feel good about buying. Case in point - British brand Riz Boardshorts are crafted from 100% recycled plastic bottles pulled out of the ocean and digitally printed with earth friendly inks. What inspires you about the concept of luxury consignment? My inspiration comes from our established customers and repeat consignors. When I see how much they love finding a stunning couture dress, shoes, or bag for a fraction of the price, it motivates me to continue my endless search for rare and exclusive items. How do you go about curating and editing the store offerings? By now we know our customers’ tastes and exactly the what they want. Based on that knowledge we edit and curate the goods consignors bring to us.

A Fashion Connoisseur's Feast

What is the most fabulous or unusual piece that you have ever had in the store and the story behind it? The one that stands out the most was a exquisite yellow dress by designer Chado/Ralph Rucci that came a few months ago. After doing a little research, we found that it was a runway piece ordered by Neiman Marcus, which had an exclusive NM client waiting list. Luckily, we got the original runway dress, and needless to say, it sold immediately.

What are you tempted to take home from the store right now? I can honestly say that if I could, I would take everything home with me! Thankfully it’s not all in my size, and besides, I have our clients to think about!

W E D D I N G T R A D I T I O N S have remained relatively constant throughout my lifetime with the same tried and true elements. The white dress, the cake, the bouquet toss, and the wedding march will always be staples of the American wedding, but gone are the days of adhering to traditions simply for tradition’s sake.

While trends shift from season to season, the familiar elements of a wedding are evolving, and our team couldn’t be happier with the explosion of curated selections, the boldness of starting new traditions, and the blending of religions and cultures. Most of our clients are young professionals who have a distinct style, cuisine preferences, and many are well rehearsed at attending weddings, so they know which elements and traditions ring true for them. Ticking off the boxes on the standard checklist for planning each tradition is no longer the goal. Now it’s about tailoring these traditions to suit each client’s unique desires. Tossing the bouquet, stomping a glass, walking down the church aisle, processional music, and even serving cake are all undergoing a thoughtful review by each client. Often the result is what we like to call the “New Traditional.” Here’s our team’s take on a few of the classics revisited in a fresh new way.

8. WEDDING COLORS are straying from the traditional white and accent colors. The “new white” is any neutral or metallic accented with colors, patterns and natural elements like wood.

Gelinas designed the fireplace and left the plaster unpainted and unpolished to give a subtle variation in texture from the painted walls. The iron chandelier was a collaboration with local craftsman, Steven Handelman. Both elements add a touch of subtle drama to the elegant master suite.

Of course, it does not hurt that he holds a BFA in Interior Design from the renowned Pratt Institute in New York City and a wealth of experience and knowledge in both the design and art worlds. But what separates this indemand designer from the pack is his innate ability to interpret his clients’ needs, ideas, and personal aesthetics into well-designed, comfortable, and functional spaces. Gelinas recently remodeled this Eucalyptus Hill home in Montecito for a retired Canadian couple who wanted to reclaim the home’s Spanish Style roots. Built in the 1970’s, the house underwent a not-so-proper English Country Style remodel in the 80’s. After removing thousands of pounds of pink marble and mirrored walls, Gelinas capitalized on the “good bones” of the house and transformed the interior to reflect a clean, no-nonsense take on traditional Spanish Colonial Style. With white walls and ceilings throughout, light-filled rooms are accented with blues and greens, meant to bring in the colors from the outside gardens. Ernest Hemingway once said, “Always do sober what you said you would do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.” Whether or not Tom Dolan had a glass in hand when he decided to make an annual wine-centric sojourn to Italy, he has for years continued doing what he said he would. Every summer, to enhance the guest experience at his restaurant, Toma, he spends a couple of weeks exploring a particular Italian wine region, walking village to village up to twenty miles a day as a prelude to fantastic food and wine at local establishments at night. He then returns to Toma with his latest finds. In past years, Tom has hiked through Piedmont, Tuscany, Umbria and Alto Adige. Last summer, he headed for Friuli and the Gorizia wine region in the northeast, and neighboring Slovenia. He pursued the famous white Friulano varietals, plus a bit of Ernest Hemingway’s legacy. “Papa” traveled the Gorizia Valley as an ambulance driver for the Italian army during World War I and later described it in his novel A Farewell to Arms. Tom followed a century later and brought back Friulano white wines that pair nicely with seafood dishes, especially mussels, clams and calamari. Step into Toma, and you can write your own little story on that theme.

Ayda Robana of Om Sweet Mama delights the senses with her fresh take on a tropical, Mexican Cuisineinspired menu. The recipes are simple, colorful, and as alluring as glassy waves on a fine summer day. YUCATAN CEVICHE 3 lbs. sushi-grade saltwater fish, skinned, de-boned, bloodline removed (yellowtail tuna, halibut, sea bass, etc.) 1 ½ cups fresh lime juice 1 ½ cups young coconut juice 1 ½ cups young coconut meat (from 2 coconuts) ½ small habanero 1 small clove garlic, minced 1 small red onion, finely chopped 1 teaspoon fresh ground ginger My love of Tulum 1 tablespoon pink Himalayan salt 1 stalk lemongrass, bruised and for Hartwood restaurant 1 bunch cilantro, chopped in particular inspired this menu. 1 ripe avocado, sliced Hartwood is my happy place. Set on 1 small bunch radishes, mandolin sliced the jungle side of the beach road, it's lush Garnish: radish sprouts, edible flowers with vegetation and warm candlelight. With no Cut up the fish into small cubes. Add lime juice, coconut water, onion, habanero, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, and salt. Scrape out the flesh of the young coconuts and chop into small diced pieces. Add to the mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 3-4 hours. Add cilantro, avocado, and radishes. Garnish with radish sprouts, edible flowers, and pickled onions. Serve with beet tostada, plantain chips, or corn chips and salsas. electricity and only a barbecue and wood-burning oven for cooking, many of their dishes are served cold or at room temperature. There's always two or three ceviches on the menu, and after a hot day at the beach, that's all I want to eat. I revel in these long Mexican beach days - sand, salt, and sea, a good book, a few friends, and the daily catch - all taken in with a fresh cocktail and lingering sunset. I often try to recreate that vibe in my own backyard with the bountiful blessings that Santa Barbara provides from the sea and land during our warm Spring and Summer months. -Ayda Robana

HIBISCUS SIMPLE SYRUP 1 cup granulated sugar Juice of 2 limes, 1 grapefruit, and 1 lemon ½ cup dried hibiscus flowers Reduce down sugar and citrus juice on medium heat in a small saucepan for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn off heat, add dried hibiscus flowers, and let steep for 1 hour until cool. Strain off the simple syrup. For the grilled citrus garnish, slice your choice of citrus (grapefruit, orange, lime, etc.), place on a heated grill, and char on both sides. Allow cooling before adding to drink. PAINTING UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN with artist Garrett Speirs

IT IS LOCAL ARTIST GARRETT SPEIRSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; LONGTIME LOVE OF THE ITALIAN COUNTRYSIDE, along with his devotion to the study of plein air painting that compels him to share it with fellow artists, both aspiring and accomplished. Speirs first visited Cortona, Italy in 1985 as an undergraduate student at the University of Georgia and has returned many times since - as a graduate student, a professor of painting, and as a painter and photographer. These journeys inspired him to create the Plein Air Tuscany study abroad program. Plein air translates to painting in the open air and in this case, under the blue skies of Tuscany. The immersive adventure allows participants, regardless of skill level, to experience the magic of capturing the luminous effects of natural light with a paintbrush in hand. In-depth learning and personalized instruction are provided within an intimate group of less than a dozen students. Days are spent painting, exploring the Tuscan countryside, indulging al fresco on the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fresh bounty and wine, and discovering local art and history along the way. Nine days of painting under the Tuscan sun and you are sure to realize your masterpiece.

Just about every little thing is taken care of, and if we get stuck then Garrett is there to help figure out the next brush stroke. It's a dream come true.
