7. CALIFORNIA STYLE
Earth Day, inspired by a massive oil spill off of the coast of Santa Barbara in 1969, is now celebrated around the globe every April 22nd, but for Amy Cooper, owner of the sustainable lifestyle store Plum Goods, Earth Day is every day. She honors this local legacy by offering products at her downtown location that are made to last, better for the planet and the people making them, and that you can feel good about buying. Case in point - British brand Riz Boardshorts are crafted from 100% recycled plastic bottles pulled out of the ocean and digitally printed with earth friendly inks. Plum Goods is proud to be one of the first in the U.S. to sell them. After learning about the hidden costs of “fast fashion,” Cooper was motivated to expand the original Plum Goods home and gift concept, to include a new space just next door which has a focus on sustainable, ethically produced and sourced clothing, shoes and fine jewelry for men and women. We caught up with her on a recent visit to the store, where she shared some of her favorite products that prove sustainability and style can live in perfect harmony. 909 + 911 State Street • 805.845.3900 • plumgoodsstore.com

What inspires you about the concept of luxury consignment? My inspiration comes from our established customers and repeat consignors. When I see how much they love finding a stunning couture dress, shoes, or bag for a fraction of the price, it motivates me to continue my endless search for rare and exclusive items. How do you go about curating and editing the store offerings? By now we know our customers’ tastes and exactly the what they want. Based on that knowledge we edit and curate the goods consignors bring to us.

piece. Most of our items have only been very gently worn or never at all.
What is the most fabulous or unusual piece that you have ever had in the store and the story behind it? The one that stands out the most was a exquisite yellow dress by designer Chado/Ralph Rucci that came a few months ago. After doing a little research, we found that it was a runway piece ordered by Neiman Marcus, which had an exclusive NM client waiting list. Luckily, we got the original runway dress, and needless to say, it sold immediately.

What are you tempted to take home from the store right now? I can honestly say that if I could, I would take everything home with me! Thankfully it’s not all in my size, and besides, I have our clients to think about!
At the heart of Coast Village Road’s retail and restaurant epicenter is designer reverie and luxury consignment store Sepi. With roots in the Santa Barbara/Montecito area and well-established connections in Los Angeles, owner Sepi Chapple is on the radar of highend consignors looking to sell the world’s finest designer goods. Luckily for her customers, this translates into a highly-curated store filled with ready-to-wear, shoes, jewelry, accessories and dozens of glorious handbags from highly coveted designers like Chloe, Christian Louboutin, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermes, Balenciaga, and of course, Chanel - sometimes with original tags still attached! The bulk of the pristine inventory is comprised of current or recent seasons, all at very approachable prices. Q&A WITH OWNER SEPI CHAPPLE
Please describe Sepi and tell us what sets it apart from other consignment stores? Sepi is a very high end, luxury consignment store. We are quite selective regarding the items we accept - they must be designer, in perfect condition, from a recent season, or a timeless, classic, or one-of-a-kind 32

The Gallery Montecito is proud to host Malcolm T. Liepke, who is considered to be one of the country’s leaders in the resurgence
of figurative painting. Not one for superficial or trendy techniques, after a year and a half of art school in California, the Minnesota native dropped out, moved to New York and studied the work of the 19th-century masters. There he developed his own unique vision and refined the wet-on-wet technique, borrowed from artists like Sargent, Whistler, and VelĂĄzquez. With over a dozen sold-out exhibitions from New York to London and Hong Kong, his work is now in the collections of the Smithsonian Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. TRADITIONAL PHOTO: BRIAN LEAHY
Rani Hoover, Owner/Creative Director of Rani Hoover Inspired Weddings & Events, gives us a fresh take on tradition.
W E D D I N G T R A D I T I O N S have remained relatively constant throughout my lifetime with the same tried and true elements. The white dress, the cake, the bouquet toss, and the wedding march will always be staples of the American wedding, but gone are the days of adhering to traditions simply for tradition’s sake.
10
While trends shift from season to season, the familiar elements of a wedding are evolving, and our team couldn’t be happier with the explosion of curated selections, the boldness of starting new traditions, and the blending of religions and cultures. Most of our clients are young professionals who have a distinct style, cuisine preferences, and many are well rehearsed at attending weddings, so they know which elements and traditions ring true for them. Ticking off the boxes on the standard checklist for planning each tradition is no longer the goal. Now it’s about tailoring these traditions to suit each client’s unique desires. Tossing the bouquet, stomping a glass, walking down the church aisle, processional music, and even serving cake are all undergoing a thoughtful review by each client. Often the result is what we like to call the “New Traditional.” Here’s our team’s take on a few of the classics revisited in a fresh new way.

RANI'S New TRADITIONAL TIPS 1. OUR CLIENTS can’t always book the original recording artists to sing their “special” song, so I always encourage them to dip into the local talent pool to add a live performance to their processional or first dance song - these moments really dial up the romance!
2

2. THE TRADITIONAL “updo” gets added volume with luxurious, custom styled and fitted, reusable real hair extensions. Hair extensions, hair, and makeup by TEAM Hair & Makeup, teamhairandmakeup.com. 3. SAYING “THANK YOU” to your wedding party, parents and vendors is one tradition which endures. We encourage our clients to select local gifts that celebrate the moment. One of our favorites is a framed piece of local art that can be appreciated for a lifetime! Karin Shelton Butterfly Beach Giclee Print - The Santa Barbara Company, santabarbaracompany.com 4. WHILE FARM-TO-TABLE cuisine is still having its moment, cocktails are coming on strong given the influx of locally distilled spirits. Taking a favorite spirit and creating a custom cocktail accented with fresh local garnish and mixers makes for a memorable, tasty drink. Featured here - The Cutler Buck - fresh-pressed ginger juice, lemon juice, simple syrup, and a dash of bitters, topped with soda. Cutler’s Vodka - cutlersartisan.com, Cut crystal rocks glass - Coast 2 Coast Collection, c2ccollection.com 5. I ENCOURAGE BRIDES and grooms to try wearing a family heirloom piece in a fresh way - attached to the bouquet, tucked into the hair or as a belt. Necklace, Coast 2 Coast Collection, c2ccollection.com
3
6. OUTSIDE OF PROM, the pin-on corsage has been replaced with fresh nosegays (petite bouquet) for grandmothers and mothers to carry during the ceremony. I love implementing a sweet scent and handkerchief into these floral moments! Nosegay bouquets - Ella & Louie Floral Studio, ellaandlouie.com 7. THE WEDDING CAKE will always be a tradition. However, more, and more clients are choosing to treat their guests with their own style of sweet. Sometimes accompanied by a cutting cake, new interactive desserts like an ice cream bar or my personal favorite, a liquor infused strawberry bar are added as the new traditional sweet!
5 6
8. WEDDING COLORS are straying from the traditional white and accent colors. The “new white” is any neutral or metallic accented with colors, patterns and natural elements like wood.
4
9. THE TRADITIONAL solitaire ring is not only classic and timeless but remains my favorite enduring style. Currently on my radar is jewelry designer Susie Saltzman. Her designs feel both modern and vintage, classic and sweet, and ultimately unique and beautiful! Ring by Susie Saltzman. 10. GONE IS THE requisite strapless sweetheart neckline white gown. Instead, dresses in new warm neutral tones with added sheer elements give a modern and untraditionally traditional look. Hayley Paige gown available at JLM Couture, jlmcouture.com 11. MORE AND MORE clients are choosing to walk down the aisle escorted by both parents which makes this momentous traditional stroll even more touching and meaningful. Gelinas designed the fireplace and left the plaster unpainted and unpolished to give a subtle variation in texture from the painted walls. The iron chandelier was a collaboration with local craftsman, Steven Handelman. Both elements add a touch of subtle drama to the elegant master suite.
SPRING/SUMMER 2017
F R O M T H E W E S T C OA S T to the Eastern Seaboard and a few places in between, Montecito-based interior designer MARC NORMAND GELINAS breathes beautiful life into his clients’ dream homes. Of course, it does not hurt that he holds a BFA in Interior Design from the renowned Pratt Institute in New York City and a wealth of experience and knowledge in both the design and art worlds. But what separates this indemand designer from the pack is his innate ability to interpret his clients’ needs, ideas, and personal aesthetics into well-designed, comfortable, and functional spaces. Gelinas recently remodeled this Eucalyptus Hill home in Montecito for a retired Canadian couple who wanted to reclaim the home’s Spanish Style roots. Built in the 1970’s, the house underwent a not-so-proper English Country Style remodel in the 80’s. After removing thousands of pounds of pink marble and mirrored walls, Gelinas capitalized on the “good bones” of the house and transformed the interior to reflect a clean, no-nonsense take on traditional Spanish Colonial Style. With white walls and ceilings throughout, light-filled rooms are accented with blues and greens, meant to bring in the colors from the outside gardens. The designer’s "controlled" Spanish Style allows design elements like custom tile and chandeliers in the kitchen and master bedroom to get the attention they deserve. 805.722.0052 • marcnormandgelinas.com
"I don’t 'rubber stamp' a look. Each home always reflects the owner’s personal style and personality." FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
A glass shower wall keeps the intricate custom mosaic tiling on the floor and walls in full view and the oversized freestanding tub with clean lines is perfect for soaking. The large arched window and walled garden just beyond simultaneously provide privacy, natural light, and a touch of green. In this kitchen functionality and style go hand in hand. Because the owners love to cook, it’s outfitted with a professional grade stove and functional work surfaces - a butcher block topped island and veined soapstone counter tops. Custom tiles based on a traditional Spanish pattern, provide practical texture and interest to the clean design. The simple symmetry of the living room layout makes a great space for guests to gather and relax. Gelinas designed the custom rug to reflect the client’s color scheme. The veined soapstone hearth and surround adds depth and presence to the fireplace.

THE TONEHOUSE AT SAN YSIDRO RANCH Relax into Sophistication
Life is good
at the San Ysidro Ranch, and the dining at the Montecito property’s signature Stonehouse restaurant is fine, indeed. A recipient of Wine Spectator’s Grand Award every year since 2014, The Stonehouse oozes refined old-world style defined by careful attention to every detail. It begins in the exquisite, leather-rich lounge and continues in the main dining room, with its fireplace glow, signature stone walls and, high, open-beam ceiling. The adjacent indoor-outdoor terrace offers another fireplace, an arched bamboo ceiling and views to the sea. And the lower patio invites relaxation scented by sage and rosemary from the kitchen garden. Nothing is rushed, and guests generally spend two hours or more at table. While the menu features the full Santa Barbara bounty, including seasonal fresh local seafood and produce, it also offers such classics tableside preparations as steak Diane, cherries jubilee and crêpes Suzette. With a cellar of 12,000 bottles from around the world, the right wine is always at hand, as are fine specialty cocktails and some extremely rare whiskeys, tequilas and other aged spirits. And since The Stonehouse is open to the public, a true taste of the San Ysidro Ranch is available to anyone.

TO M A At Toma, Italy’s Friuli Region (and Hemingway) Hit Santa Barbara.
Toma's signature Black Spaghetti with Fresh Clams and Calamari
Ernest Hemingway once said, “Always do sober what you said you would do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.” Whether or not Tom Dolan had a glass in hand when he decided to make an annual wine-centric sojourn to Italy, he has for years continued doing what he said he would. Every summer, to enhance the guest experience at his restaurant, Toma, he spends a couple of weeks exploring a particular Italian wine region, walking village to village up to twenty miles a day as a prelude to fantastic food and wine at local establishments at night. He then returns to Toma with his latest finds. In past years, Tom has hiked through Piedmont, Tuscany, Umbria and Alto Adige. Last summer, he headed for Friuli and the Gorizia wine region in the northeast, and neighboring Slovenia. He pursued the famous white Friulano varietals, plus a bit of Ernest Hemingway’s legacy. “Papa” traveled the Gorizia Valley as an ambulance driver for the Italian army during World War I and later described it in his novel A Farewell to Arms. Tom followed a century later and brought back Friulano white wines that pair nicely with seafood dishes, especially mussels, clams and calamari. Step into Toma, and you can write your own little story on that theme.

he McConnell’s Ice Cream & Yogurt scoop shop on Mission and De La Vina in Santa Barbara has changed its name to Mission Street Ice Cream & Yogurt. But everything else is the same. The shop continues to be independently owned and operated by Bob and Jean Moss, as it has for the past eleven years, and it has the same employees, the same high-quality McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams - perennially voted among the top five in the nation by a host of prestigious publications - and the same freshly made yogurts that have been sold here for over thirty years. For most of that time, the Mission Street store has been the only one in Santa Barbara to serve a full range of McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams. With thirty flavors on the menu, and new ones arriving frequently, it’s no wonder loyal locals and excited visitors continue to pack the store. The yogurts, which are all made in house, include a variety of types and styles, from low-calorie and dairy-free whey protein, to custards, sorbets, Greek styles, tart options, and vegan choices. Some forty fruit and candy toppings, plus hot fudge, are available to take them to the next level. This is one instance in which, happily, the more things change, the more they really do stay the same. MISSION STREET ICE CREAM & YOGURT 201 W. LE CAFÉ STELLA: GO TO YOUR HAPPY PLACE
Searching for a true neighborhood restaurant?
Look no further than the casual, welcoming six-year-old restaurant Le Café Stella. Located just off upper State and Las Positas, the café is home to a friendly bar staffed by bartenders who infuse their own liquors for cocktails, big booths that easily accommodate six, an outdoor patio with a view to the Santa Ynez Mountains, an inviting grouping of sofas in the main dining room, and a loyal, long-term staff. No wonder many regulars - who may represent 75 percent of guests at any given time - say that Le Café Stella feels like an "extension of my house." They return again and again for the genuine warmth and the complete lack of pretense. "We want people to feel comfortable," says restaurant manager Marc Lohnes. The something-for-everyone menu was just updated, although favorites like beef bourguignon, coq au vin, the unbeatable sliders (lamb, beef or pork) and the Stella burger (with caramelized onions, bacon, blue cheese and garlic aioli), and some other favorites remain. Happy Hour is daily from 4-6, and the brunch menu is served weekends from 10-3. The value-focused café began life as the events site for its fine-dining cousin, Stella Mare, and still offers a perfectly equipped space for any kind of party or celebration.

at the table might be, it’s easy to get distracted by the sweeping Pacific Ocean views and watercolor sunsets when dining at Angel Oak, the world-renowned Bacara Resort and Spa’s latest culinary jewel. However, once the first plate from classically trained Parisian Chef Vincent Lesage is placed, the focus becomes the food. The simple perfection of dishes like Hamachi Crudo enlivened by a subtle chili oil, and a hint of mint and cilantro, or the dry aged New York steak served with shaved black truffle and brown butter, exemplify the melding of traditional steakhouse fare, with a fresh, imaginative, and thoroughly modern approach. And then there’s the wine. Nearly 12,000 bottles fill the cellar, constituting a very approachable roster of old- and new-world wines. The award-winning decor and design of the restaurant are undoubtedly dramatic and upscale, but the organic design elements keep the vibe welcoming and relaxed. Deftly named, with Angel representing heaven and Oak representing the earth, Angel Oak is quite simply heaven on earth.

electricity and only a barbecue and wood-burning oven for cooking, many of their dishes are served cold or at room temperature. There's always two or three ceviches on the menu, and after a hot day at the beach, that's all I want to eat. I revel in these long Mexican beach days - sand, salt, and sea, a good book, a few friends, and the daily catch - all taken in with a fresh cocktail and lingering sunset. I often try to recreate that vibe in my own backyard with the bountiful blessings that Santa Barbara provides from the sea and land during our warm Spring and Summer months. -Ayda Robana
HIBISCUS SIMPLE SYRUP 1 cup granulated sugar Juice of 2 limes, 1 grapefruit, and 1 lemon ½ cup dried hibiscus flowers Reduce down sugar and citrus juice on medium heat in a small saucepan for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn off heat, add dried hibiscus flowers, and let steep for 1 hour until cool. Strain off the simple syrup. For the grilled citrus garnish, slice your choice of citrus (grapefruit, orange, lime, etc.), place on a heated grill, and char on both sides. Allow cooling before adding to drink. PAINTING UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN with artist Garrett Speirs
IT IS LOCAL ARTIST GARRETT SPEIRS’ LONGTIME LOVE OF THE ITALIAN COUNTRYSIDE, along with his devotion to the study of plein air painting that compels him to share it with fellow artists, both aspiring and accomplished. Speirs first visited Cortona, Italy in 1985 as an undergraduate student at the University of Georgia and has returned many times since - as a graduate student, a professor of painting, and as a painter and photographer. These journeys inspired him to create the Plein Air Tuscany study abroad program. Plein air translates to painting in the open air and in this case, under the blue skies of Tuscany. The immersive adventure allows participants, regardless of skill level, to experience the magic of capturing the luminous effects of natural light with a paintbrush in hand. In-depth learning and personalized instruction are provided within an intimate group of less than a dozen students. Days are spent painting, exploring the Tuscan countryside, indulging al fresco on the area’s fresh bounty and wine, and discovering local art and history along the way. Nine days of painting under the Tuscan sun and you are sure to realize your masterpiece.
"
Just about every little thing is taken care of, and if we get stuck then Garrett is there to help figure out the next brush stroke. It's a dream come true.
"
Susan Unger, Renowned Designer
