The Inspiration

MEET JESSE AND RILEY, the dynamic mother/daughter entrepreneur duo behind the Southern California collection of handmade bags Lavender and Canvas. Here Jesse gives us a little insight into the collection, her design process with Riley, and what it’s like to run a business with your daughter.

Lavender and Canvas is a totally inspired brand from the people we get to work with, the resources we discover and get to play with to the custom projects we create. We were recently asked to collaborate with the Denver Art Museum and the iconic Sun Valley Resort to design and produce exceptional custom-made pieces.

Eat, Work, Love

I work with one of the three loves of my life - my daughter, Riley. Every day we get to join forces, navigate, and negotiate about everything from design concepts, fabrics, thread colors, suppliers, to most importantly - what’s for lunch!! Every day we are afforded the opportunity to discover how to blaze a trail for ourselves, whether things are going our way or not.

Goaltending

Our goal was to create bags that span many different generations and styles, using the finest fabrics, linens, and leathers, to create gorgeous and memorable bags with the strength and grace that will last years and years.

A Genetically Shared Passion

Riley and I have poured ourselves into this, and in just a few short months incredible bursts of surprises just kept coming our way - from a stint at a pre-Emmys lounge, editorials in some unreal publications like the Huffington Post, a sighting in ABC’s the Bachelor - we couldn’t be happier!

Creative Movement

We love creating, and we are comfortable knowing that the learning curves are rapid and steep. The recent result is LOVEWORN, an edgy, approachable, and refreshingly original boutique. It’s an artistic mélange of vintage California, road-trip, rock-and-roll, and old-school surf and beach culture, reflected in an exclusive selection of custom made, handcrafted clothing and accessories. The Denim Body Shop, housed in the back of the store, boasts an impeccably-curated collection of vintage denim in a variety of sizes and styles. After spending the last decade creating in the Funk Zone, Santa Barbara’s dining, wine tasting and retail hotspot, Jill found a space that had “amazing energy, history, and was near the beach” - all requisite for the Loveworn location. Her first call was to best friend and former business partner, Wallace, who immediately came on board to co-create the interior. A full-time artist with a nearby studio, Wallace produces the silkscreened tee shirts and oneof-a-kind pieces - painted, patched, and studded jackets and “punk-rock” cashmere sweaters. Jill’s focus is on running the business and growing the brand, yet she still manages to design and sew a collection of colorful mini dresses, as well as elaborately embellished, perfectly worn-in custom denim creations. Since acquiring the original Ambiance boutique in San Luis Obispo in 2004, Kannyn has launched several additional locations - Ambiance in Paso Robles and Branded in Mill Valley. M A R C N O R M A N D G E L I NA S Before a house is filled with the stuff of life, it is architecture, and when Marc Normand Gelinas, of Marc Normand Gelinas Interior Design, walks into a house, architecture is the first thing he sees. He studied at New York’s Pratt Institute, which emphasized the architecture side of design. Now, he says, “When I walk into a home, I immediately know what needs to be done and can see it finished in my head.” He then works closely with clients to share and realize that image in a way that works for them. “I educate them in terms of architectural choices, and they educate me so that we can highlight their style and taste,” he says. He works across the country but primarily in Montecito, and no two of his projects look the same. He may create a classic midcentury interior, a showcase for an art collection, or a Spanish-colonial ranch style. The through lines are clean, light, open interiors filled with natural light and characterized by architectural correctness, appealing scale and cohesive color. And while he prefers sleek, modern kitchens, which he effortlessly incorporates into homes of disparate styles, the client’s preference is always his will. hen Michel Clair, lead designer at Armony Cucine, and Romain Doussineau, owner of Reed Interiors, first met with the home owners, they were charmed by their genuine, warm welcome and immediately realized that this kitchen design would have to reflect their generosity while providing gourmet functionality and efficiency. The existing old-fashioned kitchen was ready for a full modern remodel, as were the new homeowners. The objective was to open the space and ensure that design and functionality would cohabitate in harmony. First and foremost, the owners wanted the island to accommodate large groups of people, gathering friends and family is essential for this welcoming couple. A large center island, with a multitude of drawers, accessories and lighting created a natural focal point. Numerous appliances including the GAGGENAU refrigerator, freezer, wine cooler and ovens, led to create a wall of columns offering an array of cooking zones. The cooking space was significantly opened up with the sink remaining centered in front of the window to enjoy the ocean view. The choice of material ended up as a mix of glossy LINO color lacquer (softer than pure white), which was also duplicated for the butler kitchen, and wood veneer for the columns and the island, adding texture and warmth. The design results created a kitchen with clean lines, a welcoming and warm gathering place, and gourmet functionality. Most importantly the kitchen blends in harmoniously with the existing home and the homeowners love it.

NO BONES ABOUT IT: SANTA BARBARA FISHOUSE IS THE REEL DEAL

“There are so many corporate chains around,” says Adam White, the general manager, who learned to fish from his dad, Tom White, and created the restaurant with him. “But we're local, independent and family-owned - and we’re going to keep it that way.”

IT’S NICE TO KNOW that a place called the Fishouse continues to be all about fresh seafood. The White family could rest on their strong local following and their waterfront location, but they prefer to keep upping their game. A couple of years ago they added a great outdoor patio, and they recently redid the dining room with new chairs and tables and a cleaner lighter, more modern palette. But the place remains as comfortable and unpretentious as ever. Feel free to doodle on the butcher paper over your table cloth. The raw bar has been cranked up lately from quite good to great. Three to four types of oysters are now available daily, including Kusshis and Kumamotos, all garnished with various types of caviar. Santa Barbara Channel sea urchin (uni) is some of the best in the world, and it’s served here stylishly on scallop shells. That kind of raw bar beauty demands sparking wine, and the Fishouse now offers about ten varieties in half and whole bottles, also a great choice with tuna tartare and ceviche, both of which are part of the thoroughly updated main menu. INSPIRATION OFF THE BEATEN PATH

Many who know and love Toma have read here previously about owner Tom Dolan’s annual European travels, hiking village to

village in search of great food and wine to serve at his Santa Barbara restaurant. This year, he hit Romania, Hungary and Italy. First up, the rugged and little-visited Carpathian Mountains, an Austrian Alps lookalike in Romania’s gorgeous Transylvania region. He saw no vampires when he visited Bran Castle, famously linked to the Dracula legend, but did encounter local wolves, as well as elk and wild boar, all of which are more populous there than anywhere else in Europe. Inspired by the wild game dishes of the region, Tom returned to Santa Barbara with new ideas for the Toma menu, and Executive Chef Nat Ely made them happen. Try them with some Tenute Lageder Krafuss pinot noir, which Tom found later in Italy’s Alto Adige region, or, of course, an award-winning local version of the same varietal from the famous Santa Rita Hills AVA. And if you’re snacking on calamari, octopus or other seafood, try the crisp Elena Walch pinot bianco, another Alto Adige find. Between Romania and Italy, Tom trekked Hungary’s Bukk National Park from his base in Tokaij, famous for its sweet wines. But he returned with some of the new-style whites being made with the same Furmint grapes, vinified in a more modern dry style. As usual, stopping in at Toma means tasting a bit of Tom’s latest travels.

A local couple tie the knot in the backyard of their historic downtown Santa Barbara home. Initially, neighbors on the Mesa, newlyweds Leanne Schlinger and Nick Diebolt knew each had met “the one” on their first date. The union was made official last fall when they married in the backyard of “The Farmhouse”, their historic 1906 home nestled behind the Santa Barbara Mission. Built around the theme of their favorite sentiment “Home is With You”, the nuptials included a creative array of custom elements and details that made this swoon-worthy celebration intimate and unforgettable.

1. The bride and groom, both UCSB alums, spend a lot of time at their Montana home, where they love to fish, hike, bike and explore the great outdoors. However, the couple considers Santa Barbara, where they both own local businesses, to be their true home. Leanne is very active in local philanthropy and serves on the Board of the Granada Theater, MOXI, and the Community Environmental Council’s President Council. She also runs her family’s foundation, Schlinger Family Foundation, which helps support hundreds of local charities. 2. The place settings were designed to have the feel of the couple’s furnishings, china and glassware - almost like an extension of their home. This eclectic mix worked perfectly for the family style service and platters of delectable cuisine. 3. The bride's father passed before the nuptials took place, so daughter, Lila escorted Leanne down the aisle. This gesture was also symbolic of the three family members starting their new lives together. 4. An “I Only Have Pies for You” pie station featured Bakery Farmstand traditional homemade pies, made from scratch with fresh local organic ingredients. 5. Upon arrival guests were greeted with craft cocktails from the Good Lion Bar, featuring honey from Montana Leanne & Nick’s favorite summer getaway - and fresh herbs and citrus. 82

6. Invitations featured original illustrations and watercolors by Moment Maps and calligraphy by Ranchera Letters. 7. The Groom’s boutonniere honored his favorite pastime by featuring “flies,” made when he was a child fly fishing in Montana. 8. Hand calligraphed menus detailed the

feast, which featured a selection of locally sourced ingredients - baby arugula and field greens salads, artisan rolls, Watkins Ranch grass-fed beef flank steak, Ojai Watkins Ranch, cage-free chicken breast, along with sides of roasted red potatoes, McGrath Family Farm butternut squash, kale gratin, and grilled asparagus. 9. The bride’s rings were handmade in Santa Barbara, and the groom’s vintage ring belonged to Leanne’s father. 10. Leanne worked with Ranch Gear in Santa Ynez Valley to create custom embroidered denim jackets for herself, Nick and Lila to wear at the reception. 14. A selection of curated cocktails and lemonade served from the bed of a vintage truck, and the bride’s daughter’s actual lemonade stand added a touch of whimsy to the affair. 15. A petite bouquet from Riley’s Flowers was a perfect compliment to Lila’s dusty rose shoes. 16. Throughout the cocktail hour and reception, guests sipped drinks and dined on cuisine from Catering Connection, under twinkly lights and the warm glow of torches. 17. The bride wore a stunning handmade lace gown from Olvis. Her daughter’s dress was created from the wedding dress Leanne wore when she married Lila’s father. 18. For a local favorite, try Inspiration Point via Jesusita Trail. This Victoria Street

Sponge Cake is the centerpiece of my dream picnic at the Rose Garden. A simple cheese board, with some nuts and fruit, and a cold glass of local rosé to accompany this sweet treat makes for an intimate and unforgettable afternoon gathering with family and friends. My obsession with this elegant cake began when I lived in London and worked in a small bakery in Primrose Hill. Kids and their parents would come in for tea after school and order a slice of this delicious layered confection, called Victoria Sponge. I loved everything about it and insisted the head baker teach me the recipe. I made it my own by adding ricotta in the cake batter and mascarpone to the icing. V ICTORI A STREET SPO N GE CAKE 3/4 cup softened butter 3/4 cup granulated sugar Zest of 1 lemon 1 teaspoon lemon juice 3 large eggs, separated 1 cup full-fat ricotta cheese 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder Dash of salt Fruit jam for the filling

In a pinch, you can make this recipe using your favorite vanilla boxed cake mix by substituting ricotta for the milk or water.

Preheat oven to 350. Lightly grease and flour a 7 or 8-inch springform pan. the butter and sugar with a hand mixer until light and fluffy. • Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, egg yolks and ricotta cheese and beat until smooth. • Mix the flour, baking powder and salt together and then beat into the butter mixture until combined. • Wash the beaters thoroughly and then beat the egg whites in a separate bowl until stiff. • Gently fold the egg whites into the batter and spoon it into the prepared springform pan. • Bake for about 45 minutes, or until a cake tester stuck into the center comes out clean. • Once fully cooled to room temperature, cut into two layers. Spread ¼ cup of your favorite jam on each side of the cake, followed by a generous dollop of mascarpone cream on one half. Sandwich the two sides together, dust the top with powdered sugar, and serve. •

an electric mixer to whisk the heavy cream on medium speed until stiff peaks and set aside. a separate bowl, whisk the mascarpone and confectioners’ sugar together until smooth, then gently fold into the heavy cream.
