The Inspiration
MEET JESSE AND RILEY, the dynamic mother/daughter entrepreneur duo behind the Southern California collection of handmade bags Lavender and Canvas. Here Jesse gives us a little insight into the collection, her design process with Riley, and what it’s like to run a business with your daughter.
Lavender and Canvas is a totally inspired brand from the people we get to work with, the resources we discover and get to play with to the custom projects we create. We were recently asked to collaborate with the Denver Art Museum and the iconic Sun Valley Resort to design and produce exceptional custom-made pieces.
Eat, Work, Love
I work with one of the three loves of my life - my daughter, Riley. Every day we get to join forces, navigate, and negotiate about everything from design concepts, fabrics, thread colors, suppliers, to most importantly - what’s for lunch!! Every day we are afforded the opportunity to discover how to blaze a trail for ourselves, whether things are going our way or not.
Goaltending
Our goal was to create bags that span many different generations and styles, using the finest fabrics, linens, and leathers, to create gorgeous and memorable bags with the strength and grace that will last years and years.
A Genetically Shared Passion
Riley and I have poured ourselves into this, and in just a few short months incredible bursts of surprises just kept coming our way - from a stint at a pre-Emmys lounge, editorials in some unreal publications like the Huffington Post, a sighting in ABC’s the Bachelor - we couldn’t be happier!
Creative Movement
We love creating, and we are comfortable knowing that the learning curves are rapid and steep. Be it as a mother, a daughter or entrepreneur, we have to have the courage to get over the bumps, to stay open, to listen, to grow. Indeed the word ‘courage’ comes from the Latin cor, meaning heart. The J&J customer is someone who is curious! THE INSPIRATION
ABOUT
MEET & GREET
with Jennifer Steinwurtzel, owner and curator-extraordinaire of Santa Barbara’s hottest new lifestyle store
My kiddos, Jake (5) and Jones (3) are my inspirations - my little people who remind me daily to live life to its fullest. I named the store after them because it was having them that gave me the courage to see an idea through - to create, to think big and to go for it.
ON CURATING AND EDITING
The most important part of the buying process is sticking to my vision and trusting my gut. I often discover brands on my travels or when sifting through all of the amazing designers out there, and sometimes companies discover me.
GOOD VIBES ONLY
The store feels light, fresh and modern. It was never my intent to establish a clothing store - but rather a place where people could come and be inspired - a place to hang out and experience something tactile.

Turkish towel draped crusaders, Shannon and Albert DiPadova, are helping heal the ocean one towel at a time. This local husband and wife duo create beautiful, high-quality, affordable towels and textiles and donate a portion of every sale to help fund marine agencies working to protect our oceans. Designed in Santa Barbara and woven by artisans using traditional methods, Riviera Towel Company towels are intended to go way beyond the beach. They’re seasonless and can be used by a bonfire or at the pool, as a scarf, sarong, or tablecloth, or after a nice hot shower. Inspired by the rivieras around the world, of course including our American Riviera, the color pallets for the designs come from various little details, like the bougainvillea in Santa Barbara, the blue hues of the Mediterranean sea in the South of France, and the bright lemons of the Amalfi Coast. Visit The Riviera Towel Company designer showroom located on the famous De La Guerra Plaza, just off of State Street, to see the full collection of Turkish towels, bathrobes, blankets, and tote bags, as well as a beautifully curated selection of hats, handbags, coverups, jewelry, and other fabulous finds.

LOVE DENIM BODY SHOP
ZEN AND THE ART OF REMAKING GOOD THINGS HAPPEN when Funk Zone veterans and local artists Jill Johnson and Wallace Piatt collaborate. The recent result is LOVEWORN, an edgy, approachable, and refreshingly original boutique. It’s an artistic mélange of vintage California, road-trip, rock-and-roll, and old-school surf and beach culture, reflected in an exclusive selection of custom made, handcrafted clothing and accessories. The Denim Body Shop, housed in the back of the store, boasts an impeccably-curated collection of vintage denim in a variety of sizes and styles. After spending the last decade creating in the Funk Zone, Santa Barbara’s dining, wine tasting and retail hotspot, Jill found a space that had “amazing energy, history, and was near the beach” - all requisite for the Loveworn location. Her first call was to best friend and former business partner, Wallace, who immediately came on board to co-create the interior. A full-time artist with a nearby studio, Wallace produces the silkscreened tee shirts and oneof-a-kind pieces - painted, patched, and studded jackets and “punk-rock” cashmere sweaters. Jill’s focus is on running the business and growing the brand, yet she still manages to design and sew a collection of colorful mini dresses, as well as elaborately embellished, perfectly worn-in custom denim creations. Sustainability and the environment are priorities at LOVEWORN and this commitment is always demonstrated in the effort to salvage denim, and offer repairs, alterations and custom work. Follow their colorful and inspiring Instagram feed @lovewornsb for the latest news and the freshest goods. 11 Anacapa Street • 805.895.8330 lovewornsb.com

AMBIANCE Setting an Enchanting Sartorial Tone
Ambiance owner Kannyn January
may be the new kid on the block, but she certainly knows her way around retail. Since acquiring the original Ambiance boutique in San Luis Obispo in 2004, Kannyn has launched several additional locations - Ambiance in Paso Robles and Branded in Mill Valley. And fortunately for Santa Barbara area shoppers, the most recent in the former Blanka Boutique space on Coast Village Road in Montecito. Kannyn jumped at the opportunity to take this sweet spot over when Blanka owner Jennie Stierwalt decided to focus more attention on her clothing collection. The two have history together (Jennie used to manage the SLO store), and are excited to be working together again as Jennie is now involved in the buying and merchandising for the Ambiance brand. Like her other locations, Kannyn envisions the new locale as Montecito’s go-to for the fun, fashion-minded crowd and hopes to develop a real “come and hang out” vibe. The offerings are intended for women of all ages, sizes, and style preferences and include a mix of casual contemporary lines, with a sophisticated edge. All-star collections like Alice McCall, Hammitt, Mara Hoffman, Frame Denim, Calleen Cordero and many others are in the line-up. There’s also a tightly curated selection of home and lifestyle items - books, gifts, candles, body care, and other covetable goods that will get you in the mood to shop.

M A R C N O R M A N D G E L I NA S Before a house is filled with the stuff of life, it is architecture, and when Marc Normand Gelinas, of Marc Normand Gelinas Interior Design, walks into a house, architecture is the first thing he sees. He studied at New York’s Pratt Institute, which emphasized the architecture side of design. Now, he says, “When I walk into a home, I immediately know what needs to be done and can see it finished in my head.” He then works closely with clients to share and realize that image in a way that works for them. “I educate them in terms of architectural choices, and they educate me so that we can highlight their style and taste,” he says. He works across the country but primarily in Montecito, and no two of his projects look the same. He may create a classic midcentury interior, a showcase for an art collection, or a Spanish-colonial ranch style. The through lines are clean, light, open interiors filled with natural light and characterized by architectural correctness, appealing scale and cohesive color. And while he prefers sleek, modern kitchens, which he effortlessly incorporates into homes of disparate styles, the client’s preference is always his will. One of his favorite things to hear is, “I listened to them and gave them exactly what they were looking for without them knowing that’s what they were looking for.” 805.722.0052 • MARCNORMANDGELINAS.COM 54

EVERY
KITCHEN HAS A STORY
W
hen Michel Clair, lead designer at Armony Cucine, and Romain Doussineau, owner of Reed Interiors, first met with the home owners, they were charmed by their genuine, warm welcome and immediately realized that this kitchen design would have to reflect their generosity while providing gourmet functionality and efficiency. The existing old-fashioned kitchen was ready for a full modern remodel, as were the new homeowners. The objective was to open the space and ensure that design and functionality would cohabitate in harmony. First and foremost, the owners wanted the island to accommodate large groups of people, gathering friends and family is essential for this welcoming couple. A large center island, with a multitude of drawers, accessories and lighting created a natural focal point. Numerous appliances including the GAGGENAU refrigerator, freezer, wine cooler and ovens, led to create a wall of columns offering an array of cooking zones. The cooking space was significantly opened up with the sink remaining centered in front of the window to enjoy the ocean view. The choice of material ended up as a mix of glossy LINO color lacquer (softer than pure white), which was also duplicated for the butler kitchen, and wood veneer for the columns and the island, adding texture and warmth. The design results created a kitchen with clean lines, a welcoming and warm gathering place, and gourmet functionality. Most importantly the kitchen blends in harmoniously with the existing home and the homeowners love it.

The Little Door santa barbara
French expat restaurateur and partner Fréderic Meschin says that leaving Los Angeles after 35 years to open The Little Door Santa Barbara felt like “coming home.” Like the town between Bordeaux and Cognac where he grew up, Santa Barbara is also a small seaside community that attracts many visitors and has great local wines, tremendous organic produce and easily accessible just-caught seafood. The Little Door Santa Barbara captures the casual, romantic feel of a Belle Epoque restaurant. Soft light that, as Frederic says, “honors the night,” bathes the bar and the dining room in a warm glow. The walls are hung with a collection of drawings and watercolors by Belle Epoque artist Edouard Chimol. Executive Chef Oscar Ledesma offers contemporary-American fare, but includes decidedly French accents and influences from around the Mediterranean, including the Middle East and North Africa. The menu is intentionally compact to reflect what’s freshest and best today at the harbor and the farmers markets. It includes appetizers like charcuterie and California foie gras, fresh mussels and oysters. Entrées include whole local rockfish or chicken baked in the oak-fired oven, grilled local salmon and halibut, an impressive collection of steaks, and delicious, beautifully seasoned vegetarian and lamb couscous. Passionate about service and hospitality, Fréderic and companion Fatos Silan provide a warm welcome while attending to every detail to ensure that The Little Door Santa Barbara opens to a world of deep enjoyment. NO BONES ABOUT IT: SANTA BARBARA FISHOUSE IS THE REEL DEAL
“There are so many corporate chains around,” says Adam White, the general manager, who learned to fish from his dad, Tom White, and created the restaurant with him. “But we're local, independent and family-owned - and we’re going to keep it that way.”
IT’S NICE TO KNOW that a place called the Fishouse continues to be all about fresh seafood. The White family could rest on their strong local following and their waterfront location, but they prefer to keep upping their game. A couple of years ago they added a great outdoor patio, and they recently redid the dining room with new chairs and tables and a cleaner lighter, more modern palette. But the place remains as comfortable and unpretentious as ever. Feel free to doodle on the butcher paper over your table cloth. The raw bar has been cranked up lately from quite good to great. Three to four types of oysters are now available daily, including Kusshis and Kumamotos, all garnished with various types of caviar. Santa Barbara Channel sea urchin (uni) is some of the best in the world, and it’s served here stylishly on scallop shells. That kind of raw bar beauty demands sparking wine, and the Fishouse now offers about ten varieties in half and whole bottles, also a great choice with tuna tartare and ceviche, both of which are part of the thoroughly updated main menu. So are fresh farmed abalone, which are plucked to order from their saltwater holding tank, making the Fishouse one of the few restaurants serving that long-lost California delicacy. “There are so many corporate chains around,” says Adam White, the energetic general manager, who learned to fish from his dad and created the restaurant with him. “But we’re local, independent and family-owned - and we’re going to keep it that way.” FISHOUSE • 101 EAST CABRILLO BLVD. • 805.966.2112 • FISHOUSESB.COM

Bluewater Grill is the newest addition to Santa Barbara’s sustainable-fresh-seafood dining scene, and co-founders Richard Staunton and Jimmy Ulcickas are serious about their mission. Staunton works local waters in his fishing boat, the Pilikia, and the restaurant occupies the old lighthouse building that formerly housed legendary Castagnola’s Fish House, which also featured fresh fish caught by their fleet. Bluewater’s seafood is sustainably caught and managed, and the fish-origins chart will tell you exactly where it came from. As for vegetables and produce, think local, seasonal and farmers market. Chef Chanel Ducharme’s kitchen stocks a full raw bar with super-fresh oysters and local sea urchin (uni), whole oven-roasted fish, seasonally available halibut and white seabass; swordfish caught individually from the Pilikia, and a rotating collection of six seasonal specialties including bouillabaisse, seafood paella and New England clambake. At the inspiring and educational Second Tuesday Tastings, Ducharme pairs seasonal seafood with sake, beer or a local wine - the list is a deep dive into the grand cache of great Central Coast seafood accompaniments. It’s all served in the historic building at the foot of State Street, now a beautiful, airy, two-level restaurant with an upstairs bar and outdoor patio that serves up some of Santa Barbara’s best ocean views all day long. CA’DARIO IN GOLETA AND THE SB PUBLIC MARKET
Dario Furlati
, chef-owner of the locally beloved Ca’Dario Ristorante, has been expanding lately. In 2014 he opened Ca’Dario Pizzeria three doors down from the restaurant. Now he has two brand-new locations: Ca’Dario Pizzeria in the Public Market and a second Ca’Dario Cucina Italiana next to The French Press in Goleta’s Storke Plaza. The pizzeria suits the Public Market’s grab-and-go sensibility. Whether you choose a classic Margherita pizza or one with truffle cheese and wild mushrooms, you’ll have a perfect meal for one person or a quick bite for two.
“We cater to people who want something fast and good,” Furlati says and isn’t that everybody?
He might also have mentioned people who want great value, because at just $9, these pizzas are a steal. Small bites are $7, and salads $8. There is just one dessert - a fantastic tiramisú. At print time, the beer and wine license was expected any day, so Moretti Italian beer, plus prosecco and lambrusco, will be served soon. The new Ca’Dario Cucina Italiana in Goleta continues in the tradition of its elder Santa Barbara sibling, but this location has a separate bar, and the classic pastas, roasted meats and fish, and other delights come from a big, open display kitchen. TOMA
INSPIRATION OFF THE BEATEN PATH
Wild Boar special with white polenta and hedgehog mushrooms.
Many who know and love Toma have read here previously about owner Tom Dolan’s annual European travels, hiking village to
village in search of great food and wine to serve at his Santa Barbara restaurant. This year, he hit Romania, Hungary and Italy. First up, the rugged and little-visited Carpathian Mountains, an Austrian Alps lookalike in Romania’s gorgeous Transylvania region. He saw no vampires when he visited Bran Castle, famously linked to the Dracula legend, but did encounter local wolves, as well as elk and wild boar, all of which are more populous there than anywhere else in Europe. Inspired by the wild game dishes of the region, Tom returned to Santa Barbara with new ideas for the Toma menu, and Executive Chef Nat Ely made them happen. Try them with some Tenute Lageder Krafuss pinot noir, which Tom found later in Italy’s Alto Adige region, or, of course, an award-winning local version of the same varietal from the famous Santa Rita Hills AVA. And if you’re snacking on calamari, octopus or other seafood, try the crisp Elena Walch pinot bianco, another Alto Adige find. Between Romania and Italy, Tom trekked Hungary’s Bukk National Park from his base in Tokaij, famous for its sweet wines. But he returned with some of the new-style whites being made with the same Furmint grapes, vinified in a more modern dry style. As usual, stopping in at Toma means tasting a bit of Tom’s latest travels.

The Comfort of Classic Wherever they come from, year after year customers keep saying, “It feels like home away from home.”
A
t a time of change
so rapid it can leave anyone feeling adrift and disoriented, it’s nice to know that some things remain largely as they were when you fell for them in the first place. People know that in Europe, where you can still enjoy time-honored cooking in, say, a converted farmhouse in the south of France. In Santa Barbara, aka the Riviera of the Pacific, Stella Mare’s is just such a place. For 22 years Stella Mare’s has been serving true traditional French cuisine in a historic, cozy converted house dating to 1872 and set beside the peaceful waters of the Andree Clark Bird Refuge. To locals, it’s as comfortable as a favorite chair. To visitors from Los Angeles and far beyond, it’s the closest place for perfectly prepared classics like coq au vin, cassoulet, escargot, mussels with frites, quiche lorraine, grilled artichokes, and an array of steaks at fantastic prices. Wherever they come from, year after year customers keep saying, “It feels like home away from home.” Families come for Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving and other special occasions, and among the three hundred events held every year are weddings and birthdays, plus corporate events attracting those whose job is to fuel change, but who also want to dine in comfort and eat food that is simply French-classic fabulous.

A local couple tie the knot in the backyard of their historic downtown Santa Barbara home. Initially, neighbors on the Mesa, newlyweds Leanne Schlinger and Nick Diebolt knew each had met “the one” on their first date. The union was made official last fall when they married in the backyard of “The Farmhouse”, their historic 1906 home nestled behind the Santa Barbara Mission. Built around the theme of their favorite sentiment “Home is With You”, the nuptials included a creative array of custom elements and details that made this swoon-worthy celebration intimate and unforgettable.

1. The bride and groom, both UCSB alums, spend a lot of time at their Montana home, where they love to fish, hike, bike and explore the great outdoors. However, the couple considers Santa Barbara, where they both own local businesses, to be their true home. Leanne is very active in local philanthropy and serves on the Board of the Granada Theater, MOXI, and the Community Environmental Council’s President Council. She also runs her family’s foundation, Schlinger Family Foundation, which helps support hundreds of local charities. 2. The place settings were designed to have the feel of the couple’s furnishings, china and glassware - almost like an extension of their home. This eclectic mix worked perfectly for the family style service and platters of delectable cuisine. 3. The bride's father passed before the nuptials took place, so daughter, Lila escorted Leanne down the aisle. This gesture was also symbolic of the three family members starting their new lives together. 4. An “I Only Have Pies for You” pie station featured Bakery Farmstand traditional homemade pies, made from scratch with fresh local organic ingredients. 5. Upon arrival guests were greeted with craft cocktails from the Good Lion Bar, featuring honey from Montana Leanne & Nick’s favorite summer getaway - and fresh herbs and citrus. 82

The bride’s rings were handmade in Santa Barbara, and the groom’s vintage ring belonged to Leanne’s father. 10. 11. The 100+ year-old oak tree, adorned with photos, prayer beads, and favorite fishing hat served as a remembrance of Leanne’s father. 12. Dixie, the family pup played an essential and adorable part as a ring bearer. 13. As a nod to their neighbors-on-the-Mesa history,
Leanne worked with Ranch Gear in Santa Ynez Valley to create custom embroidered denim jackets for herself, Nick and Lila to wear at the reception. 14. A selection of curated cocktails and lemonade served from the bed of a vintage truck, and the bride’s daughter’s actual lemonade stand added a touch of whimsy to the affair. 15. A petite bouquet from Riley’s Flowers was a perfect compliment to Lila’s dusty rose shoes. 16. Throughout the cocktail hour and reception, guests sipped drinks and dined on cuisine from Catering Connection, under twinkly lights and the warm glow of torches. 17. The bride wore a stunning handmade lace gown from Olvis. Her daughter’s dress was created from the wedding dress Leanne wore when she married Lila’s father. 18. Leanne & Nick wrote personal vows to exchange on the floral draped veranda of their historic home known as “The Farmhouse”. Sponge Cake is the centerpiece of my dream picnic at the Rose Garden. A simple cheese board, with some nuts and fruit, and a cold glass of local rosé to accompany this sweet treat makes for an intimate and unforgettable afternoon gathering with family and friends. My obsession with this elegant cake began when I lived in London and worked in a small bakery in Primrose Hill. Kids and their parents would come in for tea after school and order a slice of this delicious layered confection, called Victoria Sponge. I loved everything about it and insisted the head baker teach me the recipe. I made it my own by adding ricotta in the cake batter and mascarpone to the icing. V ICTORI A STREET SPO N GE CAKE 3/4 cup softened butter 3/4 cup granulated sugar Zest of 1 lemon 1 teaspoon lemon juice 3 large eggs, separated 1 cup full-fat ricotta cheese 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder Dash of salt Fruit jam for the filling

Spread ¼ cup of your favorite jam on each side of the cake, followed by a generous dollop of mascarpone cream on one half. ABOUT AYDA ROBANA I have always loved hosting friends and family around the dinner table, so in 2007 I decided to turn my passion for cooking into a small business. For over a decade, I owned and ran a local luxury catering company called Om Sweet Mama. I recently rebranded to more closely reflect my personality and my food philosophy and now operate as Ayda Robana Catering. I continue to specialize in seasonal local cuisine and focus on sustainably raised and harvested meats and seafood, and plant-based menus. My food is clean and simple, with lots of Mediterranean and international influences. I gain inspiration from adventures abroad and most importantly, from my passion for connecting with people from different cultures. Collecting their family recipes and cooking together is a way to have a heart to heart connection and experience cultures outside of one’s own.
