NEW ORLEANS LEGENDS In a meeting of New Orleans’ best-known musical treasures, R&B legend Allen Toussaint joins with traditional jazz giants the Preservation Hall Jazz Band as the Cresent City holds sway at the Carolina Theatre. Toussaint is one of the most influential figures in contemporary New Orleans music, a renowned songwriter and producer who is celebrated for his deft touch and funky feel on the piano. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a multiple Grammy nominee, and, like Preservation Hall, a National Medal of Arts recipient. The ebullient Preservation Hall Jazz Band have kept traditional jazz alive in the French Quarter for a half-century. At the band’s 50th anniversary celebration at Carnegie Hall, audiences reveled in “the polyphonic glories of vintage New Orleans jazz, in which nearly every instrument seems to improvise around the tune at the same time” (New York Times). When these musical institutions come together in downtown Durham, expect a deep dive into New Orleans’ vibrant musical heritage. Scheduled for November 25th at The Lobero Theatre. Q: What was your motivation/inspiration for opening Industry Home? It has always been a dream of mine to own a store filled with interesting pieces I love and that I hope everyone else loves. While working as an interior designer, I kept feeling this tug towards being a store owner. Andrew and Peter Hernandez, from Brothers of Industry and friends of mine for 20 years, were meanwhile looking for a space to showcase some of their beautifully crafted furniture and lighting. The timing was right and things fell in place for us to collaborate and open up a retail location. Q: How did you assemble such a dynamic team of partners? We have all known each other since grade school and high school and each partner has a background that brings something different to the table: Andrew Hernandez in construction, Peter Hernandez in business, Kate Hernandez in antiques, Thomas Masker in electrical and I have a background in design. We came together really organically, as each of us could contribute in a different way. Q: What are some of the most unique aspects of the store and the design services you offer? The store is unique because it is filled with furniture and lighting made and designed locally and with hand curated goods, with a design atheistic in mind. We have people come into the store and say they want one of everything. I think we really create an environment, more than just a retail location. Because I am often found behind the counter, I am able to talk customers through options or custom designs. People often need a bit more help than just deciding on one piece of furniture, so the fact that I can come to their homes for consultations to flush the design out further is really special. Q: Such an interesting and varied range of pieces populate the store, yet it has a very cohesive feel. How do you and your team go about “curating” the store? For the most part we go off gut and what we like. Luckily, we all have a similar design aesthetic. Kate and I bring a feminine hand to some of our more industrial pieces by balancing them with upholstered pieces or a contrasting vintage piece. Because our look is quite eclectic it makes it fun to mix things together in unexpected ways. Q: When a client or customer walks through the door, what sort of an experience are you hoping to provide? I hope they feel at home, but at the same time transported, like they can take a deep breath. Or like they are shopping in their best friend’s home, who happens to have fabulous taste. We often get repeat customers who are excited to show their friends a piece they have been eyeing or a piece they are customizing for their home. That sort of thing makes me smile. I love watching others get excited about what I get excited about. 740 STATE STREET, SANTA BARBARA 805.845.5780 • INDUSTRY-HOME.COM

CRAZY GOOD BREAD
ossell Studer, who owns Crazy Good Bread Co. with her mother and partner, Bettie Miller, isn’t a baker; she’s a foodie who loves bread, a self-described “eater who knows what I like.” One thing she likes better than just about anything is bread “made the way it is meant to be made.” That means flour, water, salt, an all-natural starter and no commercial yeast. It also means bread with personality and pizzazz. “We want to have fun and play with flavors and discover new pairings of bread with food and wine,” says Studer, whose loaves suggest exciting new takes on bread pudding, French toast and Thanksgiving stuffing. The seminal expression of their laser focus on quality is the exquisitely crusty, enticingly chewy, visually stunning Country Loaf. It’s also the launching pad for leavened flights of fancy in the form of loaves flavored with lavender (a touch of Provence), lemon (sensational with soft brie and sauvignon blanc), and walnuts (wonderful with gorgonzola and zinfandel). Both the perfectly balanced Rosemary Olive loaf and or the exotic Fig Masala (with a sesame seed crust) will take you on a quick-as-toast trip to the Mediterranean, and for an original dessert, top a slice of Orange Chocolate bread with vanilla ice cream, and sip some Grand Marnier. And don’t miss the addictive crisps, pretzels and brioche buns. Crazy Good Bread keeps and travels well. The company began as a mail-order business but has since sprouted two bricks-and-mortar stores – one in Carpinteria and another in the recently opened Santa Barbara Public Market. Get the goods at either store, plus preserves and tasties, or order online. Shopping for a friend? A loaf in one of their spectacular boxes makes an unforgettable gift.

Q/A
with Mary Benenati, founder and owner of Onward Art & Design, a fanciful interior design store that presents design in the context of a living space, using an playful mix of furniture, objects and art.
Q: Tell us a bit about Onward Art & Design. Onward is a boutique filled with fine home furnishings, mixed in with artwork from local artists of whom I have admired for years, as well as artwork I have found in my travels to France, England and Mexico. Onward has an eclectic array of contemporary, classic, whimsical brought together to equal timeless beauty. Q: How did you get your start in the home design/art business and from where does your inspiration spring? My inspiration comes from my parents, Bob and Barbara McColm. Their appreciation for art and “thinking outside of the box” has influenced and enriched my design sense. Joining their business, Danica House, in 1982 was the beginning of my endless admiration for art and design. Q: The store collection is so eclectic and whimsical, yet aesthetically cohesive. How do you L O C A L B E AT O N WA R D A R T & D E S I G N pull that off so seemingly effortlessly? 1233 STATE STREET, SANTA BARBARA • 805.324.4337 • ONWARDARTANDDESIGN.COM Many years of design experience and truly loving the pieces I sell. There is a fine line when pulling it all together and making it all work. Q: The vibe of the store is such a fabulous mix of cool, edgy, functional, outrageous, beautiful and at times a bit irreverent and humorous. How do you decide what is “worthy”? As my husband says, “Mary loves things” and I do, but I am very picky as to what makes the cut. It has to be well-made, bring a smile, laugh or goose bumps for me to add to the mix. Q: Ravens, impalas and cobras, oh my! Much of the collection takes the form of animals; bird portraits, impala sculptures, wire cobras. Are you an “animal lover” per chance? Most certainly, I think it is the innocent beauty that attracts us to animals.

imberly Vyn
When it comes to creating beautiful jewelry, Santa Barbara designer Kimberly Vyn knows the ropes. The formally trained gemologist and avid sailor has combined her love of gems with a passion for all things nautical in her Nauti Collection. Her handcrafted necklaces, earrings and bracelets combine leather, suede, gold vermeil and sterling silver with ethically-sourced freshwater pearls. “Growing up in and around the water, I’m inspired by the ocean and everything in it,” explains Vyn, a lifelong sailor who came up with the idea for her jewelry after a trip to the West Indies. “I wanted to create the kind of jewelry that I wanted to wear. Simple, beautiful pieces that can go from a day on the water to dinner with my husband.” One peek at the collection and it’s clear Vyn has a thing for pearls. She hand selects the highest quality freshwater pearls from whites to iridescent champagnes to moonlight black. A favorite among customers is her five wrap bracelet which also doubles as a necklace. For that piece a generous amount of pearls varying in size and shape on chocolate brown leather and finishes with a coconut clasp and loop closure. Her flagship store is Plum Goods in Santa Barbara which helped to launch her collection. “I walked in and Amy Cooper, the owner, said ‘Are you the pearl girl?’,” Vyn said laughing. “We started with the nauti pearl bracelet and grew the line from there. She’s become a sounding board and a mentor for me and has been so receptive to trying out different designs to see what works for the customer. It’s a pleasure to be a part of a store with such a love for artists.” As someone who enjoys being on water more than land, Vyn’s jewelry is a perfect representation of how much the ocean and all of it’s treasures mean to her. With that in mind, she contributes a percentage of sales to a variety of charitable causes with a special emphasis on marine preservation organizations. Kim’s work can be seen at Plum Goods, 909 State Street, Santa Barbara at 805.845.3900 or visit PlumGoodsStore.com 36

FALL/WINTER 2014
ABOUT THE ARTIST AND THE EXHIBIT Telegraph Brewing Company, 418 North Salsipuedes Street, Santa Barbara, presents the fine art photography and bicycle restoration work of Santa Barbara resident, Michael Blake. His exhibit features a series of metal printed photography that thoughtfully captures his year long restoration of a 1951 Schwinn Cycle Truck, which was once operated by the United States Postal Service. Michael’s 45 prints exhibit beautiful perspectives that bring the bicycle’s iconic details to light, before and after it’s rejuvenation. Viewers are brought in close to see how sixty years of rusted character are contrasted with refreshed paint and re-plated metal. Michael’s extensive mechanical process combined with the creatively assembled artwork of parts has produced a wonderful photography series honoring the simpler days when many deliveries were made by pedal power. The son of an artist mother and an ad agency owner/ photographer father, Michael was born not with a silver spoon, but with crayons in hand. He received a BFA in Graphic Design and Photography from The Art Institute of Chicago. It was there that he started his agency and photography background. Michael currently runs his own art direction and photography business. THE SCHWINN CYCLE TRUCK HISTORY The Cycle Truck was manufactured from 1939 to 1967 in Chicago, Illinois for use as a commercial delivery vehicle. This particular 1951 bike was in service for the “U.S. Post Office Department” in Fullerton, California. All models came with a frame-mounted sign plate for advertising or a business name that was clearly visible on either side of the bike. This particular Cycle Truck has the letters “U.S.P.O. DEPT.” and a number 5 on the right side of the plate to indicate it’s place in the delivery fleet. The 20 inch front wheel makes space for the large basket that is bolted to a frame-mounted system. This Schwinn-patented design allows the rider to steer easily while carrying loads up to 150 pounds. Essentially the whole bike was built “heavy duty”, along with the Gillette Super Traction tires and tubes, which together weigh about 16 pounds. They still hold air and are at least 40 years old. This overbuilt design makes the bike weigh in at 72 pounds. Everything on the bike is original except the following; pedals, four basket mounting bolts/nuts, two fender screws and front fender bolt. Michael Blake can be contacted at blakeid@mac.com, 805.680.3761 or visit michaelblakecreative.com

here’s a phrase in business known as “economies of scale,” and customers at Arch Rock are reaping the benefits. The recently acquired Arch Rock (formerly Arch Rock Fish) is now part of the Santa Barbara–based Genuine Restaurant Concepts family, which also includes Brophy Bros, The Cliff Room, On the Alley (OTA), Benchmark eatery and the classic Farmer Boy Restaurant (re-opening 2015). GRC’s purchase power generates savings, which it then passes on to customers. In the restaurant’s former incarnation as a seafood house, the menu listed only a couple of meat items. One was a steak for $36; now there’s a 10-ounce New York for $22. The hamburger used to be $16; now the same burger is $12. You can grab a one-and-a-halfpound lobster on Monday and Tuesday nights for $24.95. In January, when Arch Rock was acquired, the food was already tasty and carefully made, so GRC left about 80 percent of the menu unchanged. A few tweaks on quality, a bit more variety, savings passed on to the customer, and everyone eats happy. With menu selections of starters, salads, pork chops, short ribs, roasted chicken, ahi tuna, planked salmon and sandwiches, there’s something for everyone in this welcoming place. A visual highlight includes its big chalk drawings created by local artist Wyatt Perkins. “We’ve made small changes, to be more casual and have broader appeal. There is always more work to do, but we have started on the path,” Operations Director Danny Quinn explains. “That’s what we do, casual, and that’s what we’re comfortable with.” Their customers are, too. hange is good, but so is finding what works and sticking with it - like Lucky’s, the benchmark of Santa Barbara steakhouse dining for the past 14 years. So what makes it work? A warm welcome, seating from formal to casual, professional service, and excellent cocktails play their role, as do wines from the around world at every price, at least twenty of which are available by the glass every day. Of course, none of that would matter if the food weren’t special. Only four percent of U.S. beef is Prime, but all of Lucky’s is, except for a filet mignon of local grass-fed beef raised by the Watkins Cattle Company in Ojai. “Prime is more expensive, but it’s more tender and flavorful,” explains general manager-executive chef, Leonard Schwartz. Other ingredients follow suit, like the perfect string beans and the tiny, sugar-sweet Gaviota strawberries from Harry’s Berries in Oxnard. “We are not about what’s new and fabulous,” says Schwartz. “People come here because they like what we are. There seems to be a comfort in knowing what to expect and leaving with that expectation fulfilled.” That’s not to say there aren’t things even some regulars don’t know about – like the à la carte brunch, served Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm. A complimentary mimosa, bellini or flute of Prosecco comes with the meal, served on the patio, in the semi-enclosed courtyard or at the bar. The menu ranges from morning eggs dishes to lunch favorites like the Lucky Burger and the open-face filet mignon steak sandwich to an array of main-course salads. or 16 years, The Brewhouse Santa Barbara has been many things to many people: the setting for a lively Saturday night, the spot for an after-work beer with friends or co-workers, the headquarters for a casual weekday lunch, the meeting place for a gang of friends to hit a Sunday brunch where they make their own pancakes. But whenever people come and whomever they bring or meet, The Brewhouse always offers a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere where people can have a good time. You can pull up to the long bar or choose a wood table or booth inside or a table outside, then order a well-poured cocktail or a beer from the extensive menu that includes 16 selections crafted a few feet away on the premises, as well as a rotating list of six “guest” beers.Add some appetizers or something more substantial from the diverse menu of fairly priced comfort food - the fire-roasted artichoke with rosemary aioli, the pasilla pork loin, the cheeseburger and the filet mignon and mushroom enchilada with ancho-lime cream sauce are all favorites and then just enjoy the vibe. Locals love the place and make up the majority of the clientele. Visitors love to find it, and when they do, they tend to return multiple times during their stay to soak up some genuine S.B. atmosphere. As brothers, family is important to owners Matt & Jeff Nichols and with their restaurants they want to evoke that same feeling. Their staff feels the same, and they are proud that many of this extended family have been with them since they opened their first restaurant. At the new Red Barn Jeff says, “We’re doing what we heard everyone wants, revisiting our classic Brothers’ cuisine, dishes like the prime filet with Stilton and port-wine sauce, the pan-roasted salmon with horseradish crust, the glazed pork chop with apple sauce, and appetizers like housemade smoked salmon and the tuna tartare, everybody’s been chomping at the bit for that.” The restaurant has basically been gutted, taking it down to its two-by-fours. f you fondly recall the days of white-table-cloth restaurants where encyclopedic menus provided an exquisite overload of classic dishes, then you’ll love Sly’s in Carpinteria. Conceived as a steak and seafood house á la San Francisco’s renowned Tadich Grill, the six-year-old restaurant run by the French-trained, much-traveled chef James Sly and his wife, Annie, is a something-for-everyone kind of place. “Sly’s is the culmination of my forty years of cooking and everything I’ve learned in the restaurant business,” says the chef-owner, who is nearly always there, welcoming guests or cooking on the line. “You can dress up or come in shorts. You can have a prime steak, relax with a hamburger or ribs or have a vegan meal.” Escargot, frogs’ legs, oysters Rockefeller, iceberg wedges, pastas and even premium farmed Central Coast abalone share space on the menu with such blue plate specials as beef stroganoff, bouillabaisse, meatloaf and chicken pot pie. Your server will even bone your Dover sole tableside. The extensive half-French, half-Californian wine list has something for every price range and taste, and the vintage cocktails, arranged on the menu chronologically by date of origin, include the whiskey cocktail (circa 1806) the gimlet (1929) and the zombie (1937). But whether guests come to eat, drink or both, at the bar or in one of the dining rooms, the mission for James and Annie is always the same: to give them “a great time with great food and service and a warm welcome.”JB 686 LINDEN AVENUE • CARPINTERIA 805.684.6666 • SLYSONLINE.COM

Cá Dario has been one of Santa Barbara's favorite Italian food restaurant for many years and for good reasons. The food is excellent, the decor is inviting and lively and the staff is professional and attentive. The menu includes dishes to please all tastes from savory antipastis, to tasty pastas and risottos, to mouth watering entrees. A few of our favorites include the grilled asparagus, wrapped with pancetta, Parmesan and balsamic vinegar for starters; corkscrew pasta with leeks, artichokes, shitake mushrooms, shaved ricotta and truffle oil; roasted quails with porcini ragout sauce, spinach, parmigiano and polenta. Ca’ Dario Pizzeria combines comfort with a slightly industrial look featuring exposed brick and steel I-beams, granite counters, vintage-industrial-style bar stools and reclaimed-pinewood tables. A collection of ingredient-driven antipasti and salads will get you started right, with six draft beers and a wine list of halfItalian, half-California wines for accompaniment, and some fine desserts are available later. But the dozen or so authentic, inventive, well-considered thin-crust pizzas listed on the 8-foot tall blackboard are the big draw here. They use imported flour and tomatoes from the region of Campagna to make the tomato sauce. Pizzas range from an ultra-traditional Margherita to fresh takes such as the Soffione con Uovo, with dandelion greens, mozzarella and a farm egg; the Rossa Piccante, featuring Fresno chilies, spicy Calabrese salami, tomato and mozzarella; and the “Carbonara,” with cream, quail eggs and pancetta. Louie’s
DESTINATIONS SITS DOWN WITH OWNER ANNE RIZZOLI
ou can probably count on one hand - maybe even one finger - the number of Santa Barbara restaurants that have been not only on the scene, but at the top of it for thirty years. Louie’s California Bistro has. In an era defined by the quick hit and the latest trend, Louie’s has endured by remaining true to first principles: a warm welcome; friendly, professional service; and great food served in a soothing environment. Whether you come for a salad or appetizers and wine on the veranda, which is heated at night and comfortable even in winter, or arrive for a special occasion evening amid the golden-yellow walls and lustrous dark wood floor of the dining room, you’ll feel at home, at ease and among friends. Owner Anne Rizzoli and Chef Marco “Tony” Manzaneres have been here since the beginning, serving what Anne refers to as “Santa Barbara wine country comfort cuisine.” Translation: finely prepared, unpretentious delights whose timeless appeal is rooted in the best ingredients and skilled, careful preparation. Seafood and shrimp cioppino; grilled salmon, meatloaf, rack of lamb or filet mignon; local sea bass with risotto; crabmeat dumplings in sun-dried tomato and artichoke cream sauce, these are unpretentious, satisfying dishes you know, and Louie’s does them right. The restaurant buys only from local purveyors, uses local ingredients whenever possible and offers a list of wines highlighting the Central Coast and many hard-to-find small-batch gems. A bit of the starter is added to each batch of dough, which, after it is flavored and shaped, will proof for up to 8 hours. This long fermentation process is what allows their bread to gain its construction and feisty yeasty flavor. They put a lot of time into each loaf. JANE
Looking for a unique and social dining experience? At Jane, the only thing more fun than sitting at a large, communal table talking with people you’ve never met in a lively restaurant is enjoying a delicious burger on a homemade bun with homemade mayo, and a roasted chile for accent. You can, of course, have your own table. Salad bowls are popular at lunchtime, too, like the half papaya filled with crab on a bed of butter lettuce, sprinkled with toasted almonds and two yummy sauces. Jane’s is relatively new to State Street, but an old favorite from the owners of Montecito Cafe, who emphasize quality, value and service. Menu favorites include grilled breast of duck, seared ahi and prawn salad bowl, the natural hamburger and fish and chips. The atmosphere is cozy and warm with a floor-ceiling fireplace. MATTEI'S TAVERN
Curators present. They arrange. Ultimately, they narrate. And while Mattei’s Tavern chef-owner Robbie Wilson doesn’t codify it on hats or T-shirts, he considers what takes place in the circa-1886 building at the north end of Los Olivos, as “curating the valley.” That is, using the superior foodstuffs that are grown, raised or gathered in the Santa Ynez Valley, plus fish from the Santa Barbara coast, to create enticing dishes. “We don’t take ourselves seriously, but we’re serious about what we do,” says the well-traveled chef. Wines are local, plates come from a local potter, and American handcrafted spirits are a focus. For a narrative image that tells the Mattei’s story, just picture a valley cowboy eating a grilled avocado with a ponzu soy citrus sauce. It happens all the time. 2350 Railway Avenue, Los Olivos, 688.3550 MESAVERDE

Hungry patrons crowd the casual and eventful restaurant where hefty crab and lobster are dropped into boiling cauldrons while award-winning chefs frantically work the open kitchen serving up signature dishes that rival any four star restaurant. The postcard views of the glistening Pacific and nearby Channel Islands are equally intoxicating. Their menu includes luscious crab cakes, New England style clam chowder and a hearty Italian cioppino served in fresh bread bowls; jumbo shrimp, mussels, scallops and market squid sautéed in white wine, garlic and herbs; marvelous lobster tacos served with homemade salsa; and a kaleidoscope of spectacular oyster dishes from the best cold water oysters served on the half shell, to oyster luckyfeller and mouth-watering, colossal-size oyster poor boys. 230 Stearns Wharf, 966.6676 SEAGRASS

BACK TO THE KITCHEN: HEALTHY LIVING WITH REAL FOOD with Nancy Newcomer I wish you could see what my kitchen looks like right now. The sink is full of dirty dishes, the cabinets are all open, and there are piles of fruit and vegetable scraps everywhere. Tablecloths, linen napkins, and place mats are strewn about while various pieces of my grandma’s silver are strategically being placed around plates and bowls. Oh, and did I mention the open liquor bottles? In the middle of it, our 90 lb. bullmastiff puppy is laying underfoot, snoring. It’s crazy, it’s messy, and it’s FUN! Great recipes are often created in chaos. The Moscow Mule was invented in 1941. Two alcohol distributors, one selling vodka, the other selling ginger beer, found that no one wanted to buy their products. The two sat down at the famed Cock n’ Bull restaurant on Sunset Blvd. in LA and conjured up a classic. Why the copper mug? Apparently a third person in the mix complained that she had a stockpile of copper mugs she needed to get rid of that were imprinted with a kicking mule. It’s gingery kick makes it warming in the winter, while the lime flavor makes it refreshing in the summer. How about dinner on the table in 15 minutes flat without turning on the microwave? My Easy Linguine with Arugula and Italian Sausage is quick, easy, and satisfying. Perfect for the family or an impromptu dinner party, your house will be filled with the smell of garlic and olive oil. Biting into a sweet, juicy pear or a crisp, tart apple brings a burst of pure autumn. As much as I love eating fresh fruit, it’s always fun to bake with too! Lucky for us, another classic is back~the Bundt Cake. You’re going to love my Spiced Apple Pear Bundt Cake ~ perfect for your fall and holiday gatherings PLUS, you’ll impress your guests when you drizzle fresh, homemade caramel on top! INGREDIENTS 5 links raw Italian sausage* 5 garlic cloves, chopped 1/2 cup chopped Italian parsley 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced into 1 inch pieces 1/2 cup canned or fresh chopped tomatoes 1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper 1/2 tsp sea salt 1-3 TB olive oil 1 tsp fennel seeds Grated Parmesan or Pecorino Romano cheese to taste

Easy Linguine with Arugula & Italian Sausage
* I prefer nitrate-free raw sausage, pork or turkey, removed from the casings, because I like to brown it like ground beef. To save more time, buy pre-cooked sausages, slice and brown them.
PREP TIME 15 MINUTES • SERVES 6 - 8
• Get a pot of water heating up for your pasta. Then, heat a large cast iron skillet to medium/high. Once hot, squeeze the sausage out of the casings into the skillet and break apart with a metal spatula while you fry it up. The fat from the sausage should provide sufficient coating so that you don't need to add extra oil at this point. • Continue to break apart the sausage as you brown it for about 4-5 minutes. Once browned, remove from pan, set aside in a bowl. Lower heat to medium and add 1 TB olive oil into the skillet. • Add bell peppers, garlic, and parsley for a quick 2 minute saute, then reduce temperature to low. • Mix in tomatoes, pepper, & salt. Turn off heat, leave in skillet. • Once your water is boiling, gently add linguine into the pot and cook according to the directions on package. I prefer the fresh pastas from your gourmet shops or refrigerator of your grocery store as they cook up quickly in 3-4 minutes. • While the pasta is cooking, add the arugula into the sausage skillet and gently mix in with other ingredients. There should be enough heat in the pan to wilt the arugula. • Once your pasta is done, drain in colander, place in large serving bowl, toss with a little olive oil so that the pasta doesn't clump together. Pour the browned sausage and arugula mixture over the pasta, sprinkle fennel seeds over top and gently toss. Serve plated or in pasta bowls. Guests may add their own cheese.

Spiced Apple Pear Bundt Cake PREP TIME 2 1/2 HOURS • SERVES 10
INGREDIENTS 3 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp sea salt 2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp fresh ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp cardamom 1/4 tsp allspice 2 apples (Pink Lady or Granny Smith) cored & diced 1 pear cored & diced 1 cup coarsely chopped, toasted walnuts 2 tsp vanilla 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 cup vegetable oil 3 eggs 1/4 cup powdered sugar Caramel sauce ~ see recipe
Salted Caramel Sauce PREP TIME 15 MINUTES • YIELD 1 CUP
INGREDIENTS 1 cup sugar 1 TB water 4 TB unsalted butter (1/2 a stick) 2/3 cup heavy cream 1/2 tsp sea salt
• Preheat oven to 325. In a mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and allspice. Set aside. • In a separate bowl by hand, combine apples, pear, walnuts, and vanilla and set aside. • In a large bowl with your electric mixer on medium speed, beat together sugar and vegetable oil. Add eggs one and a time, making sure they are completely mixed into the batter. • At a low speed, add in dry ingredients a half cup at a time, scraping sides of bowl until thoroughly blended. • By hand, fold in apple/pear/walnut/vanilla mixture. Do not over mix. Scrape into fully greased bundt cake pan. Make sure to smooth it out evenly into pan as this is a very thick batter. • Bake for about 1 hour and 20 minutes, check center with toothpick or cake tester, make sure it comes out clean. Let cool in pan on rack for 45 minutes to 1 hour before removing from pan onto cake plate. • Dust with powdered sugar and serve with homemade caramel sauce.
• On medium/high heat, mix together sugar and water in a small sauce pan. • Bring to a boil and continue to stir with a wire whisk or wooden spoon until the mixture turns to an amber color. This usually takes 3-4 minutes. • Stir in butter. Remove from the heat and add heavy cream and salt. • Stir until completely blended and serve immediately. • You may also pour into a glass jar, let cool, and store in fridge for future use. Reheat to use. Will keep for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
Moscow Mule

EARCHING FOR A RESIDENCE IN SANTA BARBARA, ASIA AND ANDREW ANTHONY CAME UPON A RANCH-STYLE HOUSE THAT OWNER MARK KIRKHART, A PRINCIPAL AND CO-DIRECTOR OF DESIGN AT DesignARC, which has offices in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, had turned into an airy,
light-filled modern dwelling with a pleasing interplay between interior and exterior spaces. Accustomed to the frigid winters of Toronto, Canada, Andrew, a television executive,
and Asia, a yoga instructor and photographer, immediately fell in love with the design and how it took advantage of the mild local climate. But they wanted a larger lot with more privacy, so they looked around, found another ranch-style house in Montecito, and then hired Kirkhart and his team at DesignARC to transform it. “It was the ideal architect-client relationship,” Andrew says. “Mark pushed us when we needed it, listened to our ideas and offered us his design perspective in a way that reflected how we live our lives and was never the least bit intimidating.” Completed in a year, the project preserved the footprint of the original three-bedroom, 2.5 bath, 3,500 square-foot split-level house but re-created the “chopped up” interior to open it, enhance flow, link interior and exterior spaces, and integrate the parts into a gracious, loft-like whole. Elements of the ranch vernacular were retained but altered to serve the modern sensibility, which is also reflected in the furnishings, all chosen by the Anthonys themselves. The original high tongue-and-groove interior ceilings remain but now seem airier, painted the same white that was used throughout the house, including on the original, idiomatic

vertical board-and-batten exterior walls. Kirkhart updated those by layering horizontal slats of fireproof pale-gray cementitious board over them, adding an intriguing visual surprise. Kirkhart opened the house further by adding glass doors and floor-to-ceiling windows throughout, resulting in new sight lines

and framed views of the surroundings, including the foliage along San Ysidro Creek, which borders the property.
The expansiveness of the kitchen, which flows smoothly into the living room and the dining room, was achieved partially by removing a pair of heavy crossbeams and replacing them with thin structural tie rods. Beneath the classic ceiling is a complementary minimalist stroke in the form of back wall with inlaid brushed-aluminum appliances and a prep area, plus a large island made of white Corian, where gas and electric stovetops provide a dream cooking area under a large, ingeniously cantilevered brushed-aluminum hood. The subdued palette of beiges, grays and whites with light and dark wood accents enhances the interior’s elegant simplicity while

evoking driftwood, sand and other soothing natural elements. Fumed-oak floors marry graciously with the white walls, and in the two en-suite bathrooms, dark ceramic tile floors add a harmonious contrast to the custom white Corian trough sinks and the custom-made quarter-sawn oak cabinetry finished to match the wood floors elsewhere. The hearths in the living room and family room and the “urban fireplace” in the master bedroom continue the color scheme. Each is covered with a smooth steel-troweled gray plaster made to emulate the appearance of concrete. Large pocket glass doors on both sides of the family room breezeway create an indoor-outdoor connection between the two large outdoor living areas. Inside the house, “floating” concrete platforms are used as low stairs to link the two interior levels; outside, separated by black river stones, they lead from the family room to the yard a couple of feet below and form a frame around a planter filled with large boulders and fescue grass, part of the bold, graphic landscaping by Michael Schneider of Orange Street Studio in L. A. This ranch-style home, built once as a nostalgic nod to the West, now embraces not only its owners, but also the essence of where they’ve come to live. DININGANDDESTINATIONS.COM

MESAVERDE
DESTINATIONS TALKS WITH CHEF AND CO-OWNER GREG ARNOLD
M
1919 CLIFF DRIVE • 805.963.4474 • MESAVERDERESTAURANT.COM
ESAVERDE serves no meat, so it is technically a “vegetarian restaurant.” But it is light years from the dry soy burgers and bland steamed vegetables that the term used to conjure - food created more as an avoidance than as an aspiration. MESAVERDE is aspirational in every sense, from the casual, confident modern décor (think concrete floors and reused-wood ceilings) that announces it as a restaurant of its time, to the attentive servers and Executive Chef Greg Arnold’s inspiring menu. Arnold focuses not just on plants, but also on the endless alchemy of fruits, vegetables, seeds, grains, nuts, herbs, spices, sauces and pastes that make vegetables sing in the cuisines of Spain, Sicily, North Africa and the Middle East. Partner that approach with Santa Barbara’s superb organic farmers market produce, and you end up with beautifully presented but entirely “unfussy” food bursting with complexity, aroma, flavor and simple plant-based goodness. Shares plates include the wildly popular wild-mushroom tacos with lemon crème fraîche, harissa, pepitas and spring onion. Need your (perfect) greens? The Market Salad includes arugula, purslane, baby kale, little gem lettuce, radishes, radicchio, spring onion, mint, sumac and fennel. Among the inventive main courses is the popular Fez (Morocco) seven-vegetable tagine with pistachios, harissa and fresh mint. They also offer local craft beers and wines, a series of “Herbal Alchemy” infusions, fresh juices, smoothies, kombucha, tea and Santa Barbara French Press coffee, perfect with a cakey homemade biscotti at 7 a.m., when they open. “It’s essentially farm to table - plant-based, modern American organic,” Arnold says. With a little help from far beyond our borders. JB
