OUT OF THE BOX THEATRE COMPANY In the 1920s, urban America shed its moral inhibitions as brazenly as women had discarded their high-button shoes and whalebone corsets. Hot jazz, flappers and flowing bootleg booze were emblematic of a devil-may-care, post-WWI cynicism and irrational exuberance. Like F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," The Wild Party evokes the darker recesses of that era. On April
8-11, Out of the Box Theatre Company presents their unique, cabaret-style interpretation of The Wild Party, a steamy prohibition tale based on a oncebanned, book-length poem written in and about the Roaring Twenties. The Center Stage Theater will be turned into a 1920s speakeasy, encouraging audience members to come dressed in era-appropriate costumes. There will be Prohibition-themed drinks and on-stage cabaret seating, and will be presenting the show as a staged concert complete with a live jazz band led by our fantastic music director, Kacey Link. SHARKS: THE MAGNIFICENT AND MISUNDERSTOOD GHOSTS IN OUR SEAS
PHOTO: DAVID DOUBILET
Sharks are silent shadows that patrol at the edge of our vision in the sea. These graceful and swift creatures also swim through our basic and primal human fear of the unknown. In reality, sharks have much more to fear from humans. Get a rare glimpse into the disappearing world of sharks through the lens of National Geographic’s most published underwater photographer, David Doubilet, and his wife and journalist partner, aquatic biologist Jennifer Hayes. These passionate advocates for sharks will take you on a journey through a shark’s life and share intimate images and close encounters with these majestic and misunderstood ghosts of the sea. Scheduled for March 21 at UCSB's Campbell Hall. For tickets and a complete calendar of events go to ArtsandLectures.UCSB.edu or 805.893.3535.

Q/A with Karen English, owner of !Romp - fine Italian shoes, boots, bags and accessories for Women. You obviously have a passion for fine European footwear, especially boots. Was this your primary motivation for opening Romp? Absolutely! I knew the Central Coast was in need of a fine shoe store. My desire was to bring in beautiful footwear that could not be found in other boutiques around the country. Tell us a bit about your background. Both of my parents were always very well dressed and I inherited that love of fashion. I used to sit and watch my Mom get ready for work and I loved how she would pull together a look by accessorizing with scarves, jewelry, belts and of course shoes. My first retail job was at age 16 and I knew early on I wanted my own store.
What are your best-selling lines/brands and which are exclusive to you? I have many top sellers including; Alberto Fermani, Fiorentini & Baker, Chie Mihara, Coclico and Calleen Cordero in my San Luis Obispo location. Exclusive to Romp and also top sellers are Gianluca Tombolini, Area Forte and Clocharme, which I source from Italy on my twice yearly trips to Milan. I love surprising my customers with fresh and exciting lines that I discover in my travels. With all of the designer shoe, bag and jewelry collections out there, how do you go about selecting and curating the looks you bring into the store? I rely a lot on the “look” I find in Italy to dictate the collections. I select what I fall in love with and operate mostly on a sensory reaction to the product. If it stops me in my tracks and makes my heart race, it is in the running. I am constantly seeking new collections, as the goal is always to find the most unique and exclusive lines for my customers. What else would you like for potential customers to know about Romp? We’re known for our Italian imports, especially boots, yet we absolutely have something for everyone and at every price range - be it a beautiful pair of shoes, an exclusive bag from Italy or something as simple as a comfortable and affordable shoe from Bernie Mev. You can indulge in the most exclusive lines we offer or simply score a pair of our best-selling flips for under forty dollars. Also, the staff at Romp all have such a love of shoes and there’s no high pressure selling, just lots of fun and enthusiasm. We want every woman to walk out feeling they have just been treated to a special experience, having found something they will love and treasure for years to come! 2928 SAN MARCOS AVENUE • LOS OLIVOS 805.688.1071• ROMPSHOES.COM

When Bob Bryant opened his 900 square-foot jewelry store in 1965, he probably couldn’t imagine that fifty years later, the business would still be there serving some of its’ original customers, along with their children and even grandchildren. But Bryant & Sons, Ltd. remains in the same location in State Street’s historic El Paseo shopping area, with son Mike leading it since 1981. After a halfcentury of helping people celebrate and commemorate special occasions, Bryant & Sons, Ltd. will spend 2015 celebrating its own golden anniversary. A lot has changed in all that time. State Street has grown up, and the original tiny studio-front store has been transformed into a beautiful 4500 square-foot multi-level jewelry salon. But the defining hallmarks of Bryant & Sons, service and selection, remain untainted by time. The service is as personalized as ever with certified gemologists and master goldsmiths on staff, and their in-house workshop is invaluable for anyone considering a custom-crafted piece. The selection of distinguished jewelry and timepieces features the world’s finest lines, including Cartier, Patek Philippe, Breitling, Baume & Mercier, Michael M, Scott Kay, Roberto Coin, Mikimoto, as well as Baccarat crystal. What’s the secret to such long-running success? Mike attributes it to being an authentically homegrown Santa Barbara business. Locals have owned and staffed the

Q/A with Dani Leholm, owner of Dani BOY KIDS, a charming children’s boutique filled with fabulous clothing for mini fashionistas and cool little dudes.
Dani Boy Kids
What was your inspiration for opening a children's designer clothing store in Montecito? My daughters are the biggest motivation behind my drive. I love bringing my 8 year old daughter on buying trips, giving her a peek at the upcoming season, seeing her reactions and listening to her suggestions. Kids everywhere provide so much inspiration! I love to see them all “tricked-out”, expressing in their own unique sense of style. Confident kids like this stand out in a crowd and they are definitely the next fashion trend setters! Tell us a bit about your background and what fuels your passion for kid's fashion. I was the manager and buyer for Due Maternity before I had my own kids and I loved helping style women throughout their pregnancies. Now, I see these same customers in Dani Boy Kids and I get to dress and style their children and watch them grow up.
uuu What are your best-selling lines/brands and which are exclusive to you? Some of our best-selling lines are LAmade, Hudson Jeans and Frye sneakers. We are also proud to carry great sellers, that are exclusive to us in the Santa Barbara area, including; La Miniatura, Munsterkids, Scotch Shrunk for boys, Scotch R'Belle for girls, Imoga Collection and DL1961. The collections you carry are so cool and fashionable, are you ever tempted to wear some of the clothes that are in theory, intended for children? Tempted? Yes, all of the time! I have definitely worn some of the larger-sized lines and I am not the only adult shopper in my store. What else would you like for potential customers to know about Dani Boy Kids? I am a third generation Santa Barbara resident, currently raising a fourth. As I was growing up, my grandmother would take me to a children’s clothing store called Christine’s, located here in Montecito. I remember it like it was yesterday. I want to help create those same memories for this generation of kids and felt there was a need for a stylish store just for children. Dani Boy Kids is that store. It’s the kind of store you go to when you have that special father-daughter dance and you want a one-of-a kind dress, the perfect holiday outfit for your toddler, or clothes that you can both agree upon for your soon-to-be teen. We also carry shoes, games, backpacks, books, gift items and so many great lines that are not available in other stores. We are all about accommodating our customer’s needs. If we don’t have the item or size you need, we will go above and beyond to find it for you. Stop by any time to play a little dress-up with us. 1187 COAST VILLAGE ROAD, SUITE 5 • MONTECITO 805.770.3156 • DANIBOYKIDS.COM

ARA
Walking into ARA feels a bit like entering an intimate museum, filled with beautifully crafted jewelry THAT HAS A SOMEWHAT ancient vibe. Of course, the major difference between the lovely Coast Village Road flagship boutique and an actual museum is that you don’t have to fog up the glass cases swooning over these treasures. You can actually touch them, try them on and if you are so inclined (and you will be), ARA founders/owners own them. While the collection at ARA Cuneyt and Ali has an air of Mediterranean antiquity, it also presents as very wearable and modern, with clean, bold designs. Everything is hand-hewn in 24k gold; nothing is plated and many of the gemstones are left in a raw and earthy form. Molded coins and oxidized silver mixed with yellow gold combine to provide a historic richness of mystery and character to some designs. Sparkling diamonds in a rainbow of colors, sometimes paired with unexpected materials such as wood, are used to create other unique pieces. An array of colorful gemstones and other mineral forms, collected from all around the world, are forged into stunning adornments for the neck, ears, wrists and fingers. ARA's origins trace back to Bodrum, Turkey, where brothers Cuneyt and Ali were born and raised. They are the creative force behind the now global brand and at an early age began molding, crafting, and collecting gems and gold. The family entered into the jewelry making business in 1987 and after a few years, the brothers began to create, manufacture and sell their own pieces. As the demand grew, more goldsmiths were hired to work alongside the brothers. In January 2002, the line was introduced to an international audience at a New York City trade show. The collection was an immediate success and it is currently carried at over 350 boutique jewelry stores across the globe. The ARA workshop and first retail boutique are located near the waterfront, in the coastal town of Bodrum, Turkey, which is sometimes referred to as the Aegean Riviera. It was only natural that upon Cuneyt’s first visit to Santa Barbara, he felt completely at home. Loving the familiar warm climate and pristine beauty, the decision to establish a flagship store here on the American Riviera was an easy one. ARA recently relocated from State Street to Coast Village Road in Montecito and the new storefront boasts an abundance of natural light and space. The welcoming staff members possess a wealth of knowledge regarding the world of gemology and they welcome customers to come in and indulge and adorn themselves with these beautiful one of a kind offerings.

Folio Press & Paperie LOCAL BEAT Wootton Printing Paper and printing have long linked Frank and Marlene Bucy, the owner-operators of Santa Barbara’s premiere print shop, folio press & paperie/Wootton Printing. They met each other 21 years ago in a local print shop; Frank worked in the graphic design department, and Marlene frequented the store. They hit it off, married three years later, and honeymooned in Italy, swooning their way through the fine stationery stores of Florence. That same year, wanting to save a piece of history and sensing that handmade things would stage a comeback, Frank rescued a 1924 leg-powered Chandler and Price letterpress from the landfill and began some small-scale artisanal printing. By 2006, the Bucys were ready to start their own business, and as it happened, Wootton Printing, Santa Barbara's oldest printing shop, which had operated continually since 1931, was up for sale. The couple bought it, and a year later opened folio press & paperie, the retail portion of the business. In 2014, they relocated both businesses from Hollister Avenue back to downtown Santa Barbara, where Wootton had first opened nearly eighty years ago. The new location is just off of State Street, three blocks from Stearns Wharf. Much of the inventory is designed and printed in-house and displayed alongside an impressive selection of letterpress cards and stationery sets from other small print shops across the United States. The Bucys also stock a selection of beautiful European stationery, as well as wax sealing sets and writing utensils. High-quality journals, jewelry, handbags, wallets, hats, children's items, books, calendars, and other gift items - many made locally - round out the unique mix of merchandise. Wootton Printing provides in-house design and printing - letterpress, offset and digital - for customers who have both business and social needs. Business services include branding, correspondence and presentation pieces, brochures, hang-tags, labels, menus, CD covers and more. Wootton can also meet any need for custom social stationery, from wedding and party invitations to holiday cards, baby announcements, religious rites - truly anything. They offer in-house die-cut embossing and debossing, and thermography services. And they are happy to collaborate with a client’s designer to bring the client’s vision to life in the best way possible. It is one of the older sections of the city and still maintains somewhat of an old-school vibe and aesthetic. Check out some of the more recent additions and longstanding haunts that make this a vital and exciting neighborhood to watch.

Restaurant Descriptions ANDERSEN'S DANISH RESTAURANT & BAKERY
Have you found us yet?
Andersen's is known for their fine European and Nordic menu, whether it would be for breakfast with homemade sausage, country potatoes and fresh large eggs or delectable homemade pastries, strudels and scones. For brunch try the mimosas, they are the biggest “Viking Size Spectaculars”. During lunch they serve many culinary delights, along with their daily specials and comforting soups and delightful desserts. Everything is made daily from scratch. Dinner entrees include salmon hollandaise, oven roasted duck, goulash and Dover sole to name a few and pair it with carefully selected wines from our extensive wine list. They have a lovely outside patio, great for people watching right on State Street. 1106 State Street, 805.962.5085 ARCH ROCK There’s a phrase in business known as “economies of scale,” and customers at Arch Rock are reaping the benefits. The recently acquired Arch Rock (formerly Arch Rock Fish) is now part of the Santa Barbara based Genuine Restaurant Concepts family, which also includes Brophy Bros, The Cliff Room, On the Alley, Benchmark Eatery and the classic Farmer Boy Restaurant (re-opening 2015). GRC’s purchase power generates savings, which it then passes on to customers. In the restaurant’s former incarnation as a seafood house, the menu listed only a couple of meat items. One was a steak for $36; now there’s a 10-ounce New York for $22. The hamburger used to be $16; now the same burger is $12. You can grab a one-and-a-half-pound lobster on Monday and Tuesday nights for $24.95. With menu selections of starters, salads, pork chops, short ribs, roasted chicken, ahi tuna, planked salmon and sandwiches, there’s

GOING OUT FOR PIZZA USUALLY MEANS EITHER A SIT-DOWN RESTAURANT WHERE PIZZA MAKES UP PART OF THE MENU, OR A PIZZA “JOINT” WHERE YOU ORDER AT THE COUNTER and then eat amid simple surroundings. Patxi’s Pizzeria, the new Santa Barbara addition to a family of 14 restaurants that began in Palo Alto ten years ago, offers a third way. Chef and co-founder Patxi Azpiroz treats pizza as restaurant food and creates a restaurant experience to match, with great food and caring, customer-centric service amid cool digs in a historic building on lower State Street. The rustic modern room, combines wood floors with brushed-metal chairs, and the big roll-up garage door connects the indoors with the big outdoor patio. Twenty mostly local beers are on tap, plus plenty of local wines. Patxi’s deep-dish Chicago-style pizzas - even better with fresh California ingredients - are cooked slowly in one oven, while the thin-crust Italian-style pies cook quickly in an Italian-made oven. Appealing salads like the one with arugula, radicchio and parmesan are perfect complements, as are starters made for sharing, such as the bruschetta of creamy burrata cheese with pesto, garlic-roasted tomatoes and focaccia flatbread. Vegan and gluten-free? You bet. Beyond being “super concerned with the quality of our food and the quality of our guests’ experience,” says Azpiroz, “our underlying philosophy is to be a part of the community.” The restaurant demonstrates that with its “52 Weeks of Giving” program. Every week throughout the year, Patxi’s hosts fund-raisers for local organizations dedicated to children’s health, education and welfare, giving 10 percent of the day’s receipts to the organization. To find out more, visit the link on the website’s home page.

CORNER OF STATE AND ANAPAMU
Benchmark Eatery
THE NEW STATE STREET STANDARD FOR EVERYONE
American restaurateurs are great at segmenting the market. Hipsters, sports lovers, college crowds, families with kids, sophisticates - there are restaurants for every group but hardly any that can satisfy them all. Benchmark Eatery on State Street is the rare exception. By catering to no one in particular and relentlessly pursuing its motto of providing “simple and honest product with a genuine commitment to service,” the young restaurant attracts every type of customer you can think of - and they keep coming back. “We try to be authentically Santa Barbara, which has its ultra-rich but is made up primarily of working people,” says owner John Bennett, whose family also owns Brophy Brothers and On the Alley. “There are plenty of high-end dining establishments and drinking places for the college scene, and you need those, but there’s not much where people can sit with their kids or go on a date.” The Chesterfield booths inside lend a touch of upscale intimacy, the heated outdoor patio is full-on casual with a view over State Street, and the long bar is an inviting bridge that links them. Wine, beer, cocktails and food are all fairly priced and well made. Want a true benchmark of the eclectic menu of familiar, sometimes updated, classics? Try the burger, a model of the form. High-quality beef topped with melted cheddar arrives on a brioche bun loaded with crisp farmer’s market lettuce, thickly sliced organic tomatoes, lots of fries, a snappy dill pickle and condiments on the side. It’s a standard that sets the standard. So when you’re ready to see the true eclectic face of Santa Barbara, stop in at Benchmark Eatery. You’re bound to see someone who reminds you of you. BENCHMARK EATERY Generous drinks, a friendly and casual atmosphere, and value-driven food are the hallmarks of Benchmark Eatery, which opened recently at the corner of Anapamu and State, filling the need for such a restaurant toward the upper end of the State Street shopping zone. Steak and frites, lamb, fish ’n’ chips, pizzas and other satisfying fare characterize the menu, plus generous drinks, all at prices that won’t make a meal here seem like another State Street shopping spree. Tufted low-back leather booths and images on the walls by local photographer Arna Bee make Benchmark as great for a date as it is for a family dinner out, and the double-sided indoor-outdoor bar with a great selection of beer keeps the fun rolling. 1201 State Street, 805.845.2600, benchmarkeatery.com BLUSH

gourmet variations on classics like lobster mac and cheese, the menu features seasonal Californian cuisine with inventive signature cocktails that truly highlight a remarkable dining experience. Also available for private events and outside catering, Blush serves food and cocktails daily, including lunch, dinner, and late night. Their popular happy hour runs daily from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 630 State Street, 805.957.1300 BOATHOUSE Located at Hendry's beach, the Boathouse is the perfect addition to this secluded spot. Owners Tom White and his son, Adam, transformed this restaurant into a hip, nautical eatery that serves mouth-watering dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The ocean views have always been spectacular, but now the building and the food match the setting. The interior and enlarged outdoor patio take full advantage of the postcard views. On the patio, sheets of glass with contemporary stainless steel hardware minimize any on-shore wind. The interior is fittingly nautical, yet simple. The dinner menu follows suit with delicious seafood including fresh local catches, cioppino and fish tacos as well as mesquite-grilled steaks to name a few. The full bar provides a break from the sun with their delicious honeycomb mojito, blood orange margarita or signature Boathouse punch. A walk up snack bar is available for folks on the run or those who want to enjoy a meal on the beach. 2981 Cliff Drive, 805.898.2628 DININGANDDESTINATIONS.COM

TRE LUNE Real. Classic. Italian. MAYBE THE SURPRISE HERE IS THAT THERE ARE NOT MANY SURPRISES,” SAYS SOEMI CARAMEL, GENERAL MANAGER OF TRE LUNE IN MONTECITO. “We have a lot of regulars, and they come because they like what we have.” For more than a decade now, carefully prepared genuine Italian cuisine has been the stock in trade at “Three Moons,” a charming, casual dining room with hardwood floors, white table cloths, and framed black-and-white paparazzi photos of celebrities adorning the walls. The food is authentic. Many of the pastas, including the ravioli, gnocchi, and lasagna, are made in-house. From the bread and olive oil to the falloff-the-fork ossobuco, Tre Lune delivers. After regular Ellen DeGeneres repeatedly ordered a salad with grilled fish in it, the restaurant added the now-popular “Ellen salad” to the menu: tomatoes, arugula, grilled shrimp, scallops and salmon and mustard vinaigrette. Wild-boar penne, basil pesto, tuna tartare, lobster ravioli and veal milanese (a pounded, breaded veal chop on the bone) are standouts. You’ll find white truffles in winter,
farmer’s market produce all year, local seafood (sea bass, halibut, stone crab) and imported whole branzino, cooked in the pizza oven or in a salt crust, plus first-rate pizzas. The all-Italian wine list is a yearly Wine Spectator award winner, and more than 40 wines are offered by the glass daily, along with negroni, bellini and other classic Italian cocktails. The restaurant also serves a largely Americanstyle breakfast with Italian twists, and at least once, you should plan to attend the annual Opera Night in spring, when Opera Santa Barbara performers work the room while guests enjoy a four-course dinner. same feeling. Their staff feels the same, and they are proud that many of this extended family have been with them since they opened their first restaurant. At the new Red Barn Jeff says, “We’re doing what we heard everyone wants, revisiting our classic Brothers’ cuisine, dishes like the prime filet with Stilton and port-wine sauce, the pan-roasted salmon with horseradish crust, the glazed pork chop with apple sauce, and appetizers like house-made smoked salmon and the tuna tartare, everybody’s been chomping at the bit for that.” The restaurant has basically been gutted, taking it down to its twoby-fours. While the outside looks the same, it’s interior has been updated with a high ceiling, a new kitchen and a wine cellar to properly store their vast collection of mostly wines. 3539 Sagunto Street, Santa Ynez, 805.688.4142 BUCATINI With its intimate dining room and lovely patio, Bucatini is so casual, welcoming and unpretentious that its first-rate regional Italian food can come as a surprise. a complement to danish indulgence
When you visit Solvang, you have to indulge in a few Danish diet busters, like sausage, pastries and aebleskiver. Later, when it’s time for something green, fresh, and healthy, Fresco Valley Cafe is waiting. Located a bit off Solvang’s sometimes crowded main drags, this hidden gem of a restaurant attracts lots of locals who love the calm they find on its sun-soaked garden patio, and visitors who are happy to sit a while.
The restaurant offers plenty of seasonal local produce - much of it organic and delivered by the farmers themselves - plus eggs from free-range chickens and excellent fresh local seafood. The “something for everyone” menu is long on simplicity and familiarity, offering fantastic soups, satisfying appetizers, tortilla wraps, and classic sandwiches and salads. The pastrami sandwich, the chicken salad, the BLT, the turkey club, the French dip, the burgers and the many other sandwiches are loyal renditions of the classics. Ditto the Cobb salad, the Caesar, the warm spinach salad, the Greek salad the seared ahi salad, and the many others. “Some places have amazing sandwiches with infused this and that,” says owner Matt Raab. “But sometimes you want what you remember as a kid.” A local craft beer or a glass of wine made from grapes grown within 15 miles of your glass, will make those memories sing. Finish with a slice of mixed-berry-lemon cheesecake or a baseball-sized chocolate mousse “truffle.”

KEEPING GOOD FOOD IN THE FAMILY
Jane is a family affair in the best sense. Jane Chapman runs the friendly, comfortable dining room with her parents, Mark and Margaret Huston, who have operated the Montecito Café together for 28 years. When the family decided to open a second restaurant, they named it after Jane’s grandmother Jane. Jane feels real. It doesn’t pose or fuss or intimidate. Open for lunch and dinner, it simply provides - an inviting atmosphere, carefully prepared food and genuinely friendly service. Upstairs are interior balcony tables and a popular private-party room. Next to the fireplace below, a communal table that seats 18 occupies the center of the room, with its warm-yellow walls, dark hardwood floors and open-beam ceilings. Jane is ideal for a pre-theatre bite, and you can practically step from your chair onto the red carpet for Santa Barbara film festival events at the Arlington Theatre, next door. Jane and her staff know many of their largely repeat local clientele by name, including a number of winemakers, who feel right at home with the thoughtful list of mainly California wines. And they like that everything at Jane is made from scratch daily on the premises. Stocks for sauces are cooked down from bones. Hamburger buns and sausage are made in-house. Specialties reflect the focus on ingredients, including the big “salad bowls” and “pasta bowls,” fabulous burgers, and wild-caught local fish, with seafood specials appearing twice daily, depending on what’s good at the harbor. To finish, don’t miss the Jane sundae — vanilla soft-serve ice cream with homemade toffee and caramel sauce. The prices are right, and the vibe is pure feel-good Santa Barbara. cosmopolitan feel. Consider it a temple to fun and good food, with wide-ranging influences that coalesce brilliantly in tapas-style small plates called antojitos. Locals flock to the raw-bar for the ceviches, fresh rolls, and innovative nods to the sea. Menu favorites include pork-belly confit quesadillas, shrimp-and-crab enchiladas swathed in poblano cream sauce, and pulpo ala plancha, seared spanish octopus served over potato confit, celery-citrus mustard and olive aioli. It’s carefully considered food that dazzles you with details. The bar follows suit, with juices squeezed daily in-house and an impressive collection of artisanal tequilas that have a story. The Margaritas are pure expressions of the form, made with tequila, agave nectar and fresh lime juice. The wine list focuses on local boutique, small-batch and cult favorites and has something to pair with everything, including an “amazing prosecco” to go with the octopus. Desserts are fresh interpretations of Mexican classics. Go simple with gorgeous vanilla bean flan or indulge mightily with the chocolate-peanut caramel semifreddo - a hit of decadence, which, like Cielito itself, you won’t soon forget. Andersen’s Danish Bakery AND Restaurant Pastry is just the Beginning
After 40 years of success in Santa Barbara, Andersens’ Danish Bakery and Restaurant can hardly be called a “find.” Everyone knows it’s there at the front of La Arcada, and everyone knows how good its wholly homemade pastries are, even if they don’t know what it takes to maintain that standard. “This is our family, we’re proud of our heritage, and we spend a lot of time with our product,” says Charlotte Andersen, who runs the business with her mother, Birte. The Andersens are constantly searching for the best ingredients, and they make everything themselves. The “find” at The Andersens’ is the restaurant menu. It’s perfect for a bite to start the day or talk business over lunch, or before the theater or gallery-hopping on State Street. Those who know only Andersens’ top-selling butter ring might be surprised to find crepes, crab cakes, eggs Benedict, burgers, a tiger prawn salad, pâté, oven-roasted duck with an apple, bacon and port reduction, and much more on the menu. They may be unaware of the terrific happy hour. From 3-7 p.m. daily, the many varietal wines are $5 per glass, crostini included. Beers are $4 and sometimes $3. Buy one appetizer and get a second one for half off. Ask about half-off deals on bottles of wine during winter days, and enjoy local musicians on Friday and Saturday evenings. At the adjacent Liselotte Room and two upstairs party rooms, groups can enjoy high tea, passed hors d’oeuvres or sit-down meals for showers, birthdays and private events. And since there’s never a room charge, it’s one of the best event deals in town. JB 1106 STATE STREET • 805.962.5085 • ANDERSENSSANTABARBARA.COM

At Jane, the only thing more fun than sitting at a large, communal table talking with people you’ve never met in a lively restaurant is enjoying a delicious burger on a homemade bun with homemade mayo, and a roasted chile for accent. You can, of course, have your own table. Salad bowls are popular at lunchtime, too, like the half papaya filled with crab on a bed of butter lettuce, sprinkled with toasted almonds and two yummy sauces. This long fermentation process is what allows their bread to gain its construction and feisty yeasty flavor. They put a lot of time into each loaf. A Santa Barbara Find
Arlington Tavern ONE OF WEBSTER’S DEFINITIONS FOR A “FIND” IS A “VALUABLE DISCOVERY.” THE ARLINGTON TAVERN IS EXACTLY THAT. AND SINCE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PUBLIC MARKET IS NOW OVER, THE STREET IS BACK TO NORMAL, AND PART OF THE NEW, WIDER SIDEWALK is now a front patio for the restaurant, making this find easier to find than ever. The “AT” isn’t big; it’s intimate, set in a building that dates to 1906 and still has the original brick walls, interior arches, oak floors, and Victorian windows, some with now-slightly rippled original glass. Those surroundings make the bar a satisfying respite, but so is the outdoor back patio. Draped with white lights and surrounded by greenery, it’s a little world apart. The menu fits the surroundings. It’s a multifaceted gastronomic gem, consisting of familiar ingredients from local purveyors, combined with knowledge and care and enlivened with seasonal nuances based on what’s good at the twice-weekly farmer’s market. Everything is made in-house. Highlights include the AT Mac & Cheese (with gruyere, truffles, leeks and herbed bread crumbs), filet mignon in a Bordeaux-style cabernet-thyme reduction, local black cod with trumpet mushrooms and tarragon-mustard butter, and the always-different Farmer’s Market Salad hits all the right notes. Note that when the dessert menu changes occasionally, the lemon cake with blueberry compote and fresh thyme always remains. Nearly 25 beers are available and 55 wines, mainly from California, with selections from Oregon, France, Italy and Argentina. About 30 choices are poured by the glass. Happy hour is every day from 4-6, and there’s a late-night menu, too. JB 21 WEST VICTORIA STREET, SANTA BARBARA • 805.770.2626 • ARLINGTONTAVERN.COM

S MALLER H OMES
with Heart & Soul BY JAMES BADHAM PHOTOGRAPHY BY JIM BARTSCH
Since 1986, Giffin & Crane have built and remodeled some of the loveliest and in some cases, most expansive houses in Santa Barbara. Recently, however, they have been asked increasingly to construct or remodel homes that are smaller, more intimate, and more personal. It’s a sign of changing times and evolving tastes and priorities. As with food, wine, cars, clothing, and a whole raft of other purchases, homeowners increasingly seek quality, craftsmanship and value over square footage. Whether remodeled or newly built, homes increasingly reflect homeowners and their geographical settings. They may be more fire-resistant and feature native and other drought-tolerant plants rather than a thirsty lawn. They may have an overall reduced environmental footprint, using heating, cooling and electricity more efficiently. They may be “smart” homes, wired to respond to cellphone commands. They are easier to maintain and manage and are scaled to their owners’ reality, including the financial one. All three of the homes show here - a historic San Roque Tudor remodeled as a vacation getaway, a custom-built “modern barn” for an interior designer, and a reimagined Mesa cottage for a downsized fresh start - fit the “living smaller” ethos, and all three have acres of personality, style and soul.

san roque tudor getaway MIKE AND TONI HEREN LIVE IN ATHERTON, CALIFORNIA, BUT BOUGHT THE 1936 SAN ROQUE TUDOR SHOWN HERE TO USE AS A VACATION GETAWAY. WHILE THEY WERE HAPPY WITH THE FLOOR PLAN OF THEIR 1,600 SQUARE FOOT HOME, they did make some changes. Toni, a wellknown landscape designer, redid the yard to make it feel more like their own. Inside, the couple left the kitchen as is (the previous owners had hired Giffin & Crane to remodel it eight years prior), but applied a big dose of TLC to other elements - the baths, lighting, and floors - to restore some of the home’s period details.
The Douglas fir box beams in the living room were stripped of paint and refinished to bring out the grain in wood the likes of which, Bruce Giffin says, “you can’t get anymore.” A classic but over-adorned fireplace was restored to its original brick and enhanced with a plaster surround hearth, making it a proper focal point for the airy, cozy room. The bathrooms received new tile, and the wood-framed windows were refurbished, along with their rare antique hardware. The character of this 78 year-old home now shines through brilliantly. Tudor renewal (from above): The previously renovated kitchen, with its enticing green soapstone counter tops, was left as is; in the living room, the Douglas-fir box beams with gables were refinished, the windows and their antique hardware restored, and the fireplace returned to its former understated glory as the focal point of the room.

A FRENCH BARN FOR 2015
W
hen interior designer Jill Hall decided to retire and swap her large Montecito home for something much smaller in Mission Canyon, something “easy and inexpensive,” she turned to Giffin & Crane to design and build the 1,700 square-foot home as a modern take on the
iconic French barn. Located on the only level spot on a steep lot, the compact house nestles into the slope and provides outdoor areas where Jill can enjoy the sunset, have a barbecue or just relax. Jill chose simple, low-maintenance materials for both the interior and exterior: polished, easy-toclean concrete floors with a super-efficient radiant heating system, galvanized corrugated zinc roofing (she “threw acid on it” to add patina) and steel-framed windows and doors. Salvaged interior doors and hardware lend character and color, as does the soothing texture of colored stucco. The garden is a unified, yet freeform oasis of drought-tolerant landscaping. Jill’s new home is at once modern and traditional, with “nothing too precious or wonderful.” It’s just the right size for the designer, who has long since “unretired,” and says she “loves living small,” and advises anyone considering the same to do as she did and build enormous closets.

LESS IS MORE ON THE MESA When Lillian Cross found herself without her beloved late husband, she followed her children’s advice, moving out of the home where she had lived for decades and finding something new: the 50 year-old, 1,300 square-foot Mesa cottage that is now her home. Having been redone by a house-flipping speculator, a redo of the redo was in order. Lillian identified her primary needs as a beautiful garden, a place to enjoy the outdoors, and easy-to-climb steps from the driveway to the front door. She began with the garden, hiring landscape architect Chuck McClure to redesign the yard that now includes terraced plantings and a papyrus-ringed fountain. Lillian can enjoy the landscaping from the comfort of her covered back patio, where she can read in the shade and enjoy the Santa Barbara climate. Having replaced the stairs to the front door with new ones that are much easier to navigate, she partnered with Sue Aldrich to create a warm and inviting interior. Both bathrooms were renovated, as was the kitchen, where a post was removed to improve the sight lines and a flush ceiling with recessed lighting was added. The result transformed the character of the house and brought Lillian happily into the next phase of her life. 92

A singular Mesa space (clockwise from bottom left): The redone driveway and stairs provides easy access from the garage to the front door; the back yard is a soothing enclave with terraced sandstone planters, a replastered stucco wall by the pond, and comfortable shaded rattan seating; to improve interior sightlines, a load-bearing post was removed from the kitchen and replaced by a recessed ceiling beam, and space-dividing partial walls were added at either end of the dining room to provide seismic rigidity and help to structure the space.

AFTER 15 YEARS AT A MONDAY NIGHT POKER GAME, I am still the “new guy” at the table. This group of players, old buddies from high school, dealt the first hand in 1978. A few of the guys have what are now considered vintage match collections, from beloved bars and restaurants; some still around, some distant, yet distinct memories, but none forgotten.
