he scenery changes constantly as you move through the Central Coast, and the landscape is lovely no matter where you look. Of course, California’s bounty of seafood and locally grown or produced fruits, vegetables, nuts, olives, wines and beers is evident everywhere. You’ll find honey makers and lavender farms, U-pick-‘em apple orchards and cool pizzerias, gelato and gin fizzes, oyster shooters and beer-steamed clams and mussels, steak houses and burger joints. There are farmers’ markets and backyard fruit stands, impressive high-end wineries and cozy boutique operations. The Central Coast’s Mediterranean climate means sunny weather for most of the year, with beautiful sunny days even in mid-winter. Summer brings long days on the beach, where no child ever needs a screen to be amused. Whales cruise the coast, seals and sea otters hunt closer to shore, cyclists pedal the pavement, and families hit the beach or the hiking trail. Multiple golf courses await, as do hot springs, spas, antique shops and galleries where you can purchase a local artist’s powerful depiction of the green or golden (depending on the time of year) oak-studded hills that are emblematic of the area. California cares for the natural environment. Wild animals and wild places are protected, and visitors reap the benefit in pristine landscapes and sightings of creatures that belong to them. The Golden State has many faces. Together, these five Central Coast destinations are one — one that will leave you quietly and simply happy.

S AN L UIS O BISPO The easygoing acronym for San Luis Obispo - SLO - sounds like “slow” and evokes

the same easygoing approach to good living. This is a place to relax, to pull out of the fast lane and enjoy life at a soothing smell-the-roses pace. A good strategy for a day is to plan a little and then follow whatever grabs your interest. This Central Coast city of 50,000 is beautifully situated about ten miles from the coast in a valley surrounded by oak-studded hills and dominated by San Luis Mountain, one of about nine ancient volcanic plugs in the area. You’ll find miles of cycling, walking, horseback riding and hiking trails. You can golf or go zip lining in a vineyard, and stay in anything from a B&B to a luxury hotel. The intimate downtown has everything: galleries, movie theatres, and restaurants of all kinds, microbreweries, and wine-tasting rooms serving the Central Coast’s famous vintages. With so much in such close proximity, you can go SLO down and still miss nothing.

P ASO R OBLES Paso Robles has lately become a major wine center, with more than two hundred

wineries in two American Viticulture Areas spread among the gorgeous rolling countryside. With the vineyards have come great restaurants, cheese and charcuterie, cool coffee houses, bakeries, detour-worthy boutiques, microbreweries and a lovely mix of unique lodgings that includes some truly elegant country options. Grab the best produce at three weekly Farmers’ Markets, chill in the freshwater waves at Ravine Water Park, carry a picnic to the lake in Barney Schwartz Park, soak up some aviation history at the Estrella Warbird Museum, or recall the old West at the Pioneer Museum.

M ORRO B AY Named for 576-foot-high Morro Rock, this seaside town of 10,000 is a natural outdoor

playground. You can kayak in the harbor, with the rock looming above you, go surfing or SUPing, go whale-watching trip, or cast your line from a day boat (but not close to shore, as the entire bay is a no-take state marine reserve). Some 20,000 migratory birds winter here, and 30 percent of California’s endangered snowy plover population lives here. Morro Rock itself (no climbing!) supports a pair of nesting peregrine falcons.

A VILA B EACH The little town of 1,500 on the San Luis Obispo Bay is an easy place to spend a few days. Natural mineral hot springs are a main attraction, as are the Hartford Pier, the 20

nine-hole Avila Beach Golf Resort and the Point San Luis Light, built in 1890. But the big draw is that broad, sandy beach and the boardwalk behind it, with its winetasting rooms, restaurants, ice cream parlors, and shops. Pedal or stroll along the threemile Bob Jones Trail, or just settle back and soak it all in, because there’s nowhere to go; you’re already here. Naturally, fresh fish and Central Coast wines are on the menu.

P ISMO B EACH Yep, here on the Central Coast’s own version of Daytona Beach, you can cruise the

sand in your car and camp right beside the waves. Pismo Beach is a small town with a big pier and a singular coastal strand. It’s ideal for spotting whales, seals, seabirds, and the occasional sea otter — and then to settle in at night for some fresh clams, crab or other local ocean delights. The vibe is easygoing, the preferred footwear is flip-flops, and the shopping is old-time easy. Pismo is an Oceanside classic.

CIOPINOT Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, this winner of numerous “SLO’s best seafood” awards specializes in the best the ocean offers. Its mash-up name combines the San Francisco seafood stew cioppino and the perfect accompaniment — Pinot Noirs.

1051 Nipomo St, San Luis Obispo, 805.547.1111 FALL/WINTER 2019

SIP FREELY Ciopinot charges no corkage fee for the first four bottles customers carry in, and then just $20 each after that.

SEAFOOD’S THE THING King crab legs, clams, prawns, salmon, ahi, seabass, swordfish, petrale sole — it’s all here, grilled, baked, seared, or sautéed to order — along with classics like oysters Rockefeller, clam linguini, and red snapper Veracruz and great steaks.

WELL PAIRED Given the name and great wines from California, France and Italy, food-and-wine pairing is a snap. Sancerre with raw oysters — check; sauvignon blanc with seabass — check; a nobile red with grilled steak — check and check. CELEBRATE From 5-6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday from now until July 2020, everything on the special 10th Anniversary menu is under $20. Deal you in?

CIOPINOT: SLO'S BEST SEAFOOD

For decades, Ciopinot owner, Leonard Cohen, has had seafood-loving chefs, restaurateurs, food writers and winemakers for friends. The perfectly prepared, super-fresh local seafood that unites them is on tap at Ciopinot. Stop in during its tenth anniversary to see what longevity looks like — and why Ciopinot earns SLO’s Best Seafood honor every year.

NAME MATTERS The restaurant’s name refers to San Francisco’s classic seafood stew and its perfect partner, pinot noir. Why? Well, for years, Cohen hosted an annual statewide cioppino cookoff. One year, he brought the previous winners together and even entered himself. He won. Our advice: try the cioppino (with a pinot). 1051 Nipomo Street • 805.547.1111 • ciopinotrestaurant.com

WHERE’S THE WINE

Dorn’s offers wines from Monterey to Santa Barbara. If you like one, odds are you can pick up a bottle while wine-tasting in nearby Edna Valley or Paso Robles.

DECKED OUT It’s hard to beat breakfast or a few afternoon appetizers and a glass of cold beer or wine on Dorn’s sunny, umbrelladotted, ocean-view deck.

BRUNCH ON THE WATER Grab a bloody Mary

from the full bar to go with a range of classic dishes: eggs Benedict and Florentine, huevos rancheros, egg scrambles, waffles, cornmeal pancakes and much more.

DORN'S BREAKERS CAFE: LONG LEGACY ON MORRO BAY

Since 1942 (yes, 75 years!), three generations of the Dorn family have served solid, familiar fare to locals and visitors from the restaurant’s prime spot overlooking Morro Rock, Morro Bay and the harbor. Now, that’s stability. GENERATIONALLY SPEAKING Some locals have been coming here for fifty years. “Now their kids come in with their kids,” says Chris Dorn, whose grandfather, Harry Amsel, started it all. MISTURA Peruvian is one of the hottest cuisines in the world right now, and Mistura provides a warm and beautiful showcase for it. PRIME DEAL A surprising discovery at this briny seaside establishment is the Saturday prime rib dinner. Order a small or large cut with mashed potatoes, vegetables and soup or salad for under $30.

A SERIOUSLY HAPPY HOUR Every day from 3-6 p.m.,

Dutchman’s offers specials on drinks and a special menu that includes, steamed clams, crab cakes, fried calamari, fish tacos and fresh local oysters.

WELL PAIRED The right wine makes fresh seafood so much better. With its pleasing minerality, William Fevre chardonnay goes perfectly with Morro Bay oysters (harvested a few hundred yards away). Or pair a Clayborne & Churchill pinot noir with cioppino, or a crisp Ancient Peaks sauvignon blanc with pan-roasted local rockfish. RAISE A GLASS

Dutchman’s takes pride in its ingredient-driven cocktails, like the Bloody Mary, with its house-made mix and shrimp garnish, and the Dutch Mule, made with 15-timesfiltered Cutwater Fugu vodka, ginger beer and lime.

DUTCHMAN'S SEAFOOD HOUSE: ON THE WATERFRONT IN MORRO BAY

There’s something sublime about eating seafood right on the water, and that’s what awaits at Dutchman’s Seafood House on Morro Bay. The venerable family-owned restaurant has been serving up the freshest seafood and great drinks since 1986. DOCK IT TO ME With its own dock where fishermen unload their catch right outside the restaurant, you can be sure that Dutchman’s seafood is as fresh as it gets.

ON A (LOBSTER) ROLL For his New England–style lobster roll, he recalls, “Someone said to me, ’It would be easier to buy frozen lobster.’ I said, ‘Yes, it would, but I’m not gonna do it.” His roll has only fresh Maine lobster meat, prepared in house that morning. Rare.

WINE DOWN The mostly

local wine list has something to pair with every dish, from fresh, rockfish, halibut, swordfish and seabass to softshell clams, sand dabs and steamed mussels.

DEEP SERVICE MacMillan and his wife, Shannon, are obsessed with customer service. “If someone’s not happy, it’s my fault,” Doug says. When he was choosing a recipe for his au gratin potatoes, he prepared several recipes for his regulars at Rosa’s. Their consensus favorite is what he serves at Ada’s now.

ADA'S: THE SEAFOOD SPOT IN PISMO

In July, Doug and Shannon MacMillan opened Ada’s across the street from their wildly popular Rosa’s, because, Doug says, “I wanted to do fish.” He does it very well here, taking a slightly East Coast approach underscored by an unremitting commitment to excellence. ITALY IN HIS GENES MacMillan’s mother is Italian. He visited Italy as a child and later trained in kitchens in Campania and Piedmont. That background is reflected in dishes like East Coast sea scallops sautéed with olive oil, white wine, garlic, lemon and a touch of butter. A sprightly Pinot Grigio is the perfect complement. The point at Mistura is to mix it up. Do that, and you’ll feel right at home in this lovely piece of Peru.

MISTURA

PEAK PERUVIAN IN SLO Peruvian cuisine is currently one of the world’s hottest, and NICOLA ALLEGRETTA — for thirteen years the chef at Mama’s Meatball in SLO’s Creamery Marketplace — and his Peruvian-born wife, Jackeline, have now created Mistura, the fine modern Peruvian restaurant next door.

MISTURA MEANS “MIX,” and Peru’s complex history has resulted in a blend of culinary influences, including Incan, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Japanese. It’s a sophisticated and varied cuisine filled with familiar ingredients and unexpected flavors, and Mistura does it right, serving sophisticated, visually stunning food. Jackeline designed the interior to reflect Peru, from the long “moss wall” that recalls tiered ancient ruins, to bright, earth-toned cubes arranged on various walls, their colors conjuring those seen in mineral deposits in the Andes, to the large golden hoop Jackeline fashioned and added to the glass spheres of a large chandelier, suggesting the sun and its central role in Peruvian lore. The raw bar is a great place to indulge in some truly imaginative takes on familiar uncooked fare, while the main menu served in the large dining room is a trove of super-flavorful dishes made with only organic produce; sustainably raised, free-range, hormone-free meats; and sustainably harvested local seafood. The menu includes assorted cebiches (Peruvian ceviche); empanadas, perhaps the one with Andean corn, queso fresco, ajies and the steamed fresh tamale-like corn cakes called humita; causas (a kind of sophisticated potato salad made from cold whipped potatoes and tangy complements); and entrées like beef short ribs 36

cooked for 24 hours; grilled octopus with quinoa pepper sauce; and seabass with onions, vinegar, purple olives, Peruvian chilies, and potatoes. Desserts are similarly sensational and authentically reflect the diverse elements of Peru’s cuisine. Among them is Lima’s traditional Mazamorra Morada, a purple pudding made from purple corn and fruit with cinnamon and cloves, here served beside arroz con leche. To really dive into the cuisine, make a reservation for The Experience, a multicourse menu reflecting innovative techniques applied to traditional ingredients and dishes. Whatever you have, ask your well-informed server to suggest a wine. The Tamalito Negro — a squid ink hominy tamale with wild shrimp in aji pepper sauce — is perfect with the minerally La Playa Chilean sauvignon blanc. And for a tangy fruit pick-me-up, try the non-alcoholic Chicha morada, a purple Inca drink made from organic apples, quince, pineapple, clove, cinnamon and lime juice. The point at Mistura is to mix it up. Do that, and you’ll feel right at home in this lovely piece of Peru. 570 Higuera Street • 805.439.3292 • misturarestaurants.com FALL/WINTER 2019

S LO B R E W ROCK REVERED BRAND REVIVED BESIDE AN ANCIENT VOLCANIC F E AT U R E

Space is decidedly not an issue at THE ROCK, a 35,000-square-foot structure on a 3-acre campus.

The Seven Sisters are a series of 20 million-year-old volcanic plugs up to 1,500 feet high that rise like stone sentinels from the hills between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. But it is a diminutive unnamed “lost sister” standing just under 20 feet tall about a mile south of downtown SLO that may be the most interesting family member, for she is the site of the thriving, thoroughly inviting, year-old The Rock. PROPRIETORS Rodney Cegelski and Hamish Marshall (Rod’s a native Californian; Hamish is an Aussie from Adelaide) have put their hearts, souls and sensibilities into the property that is the site of their bold efforts to expand the SLO Brewing Co. brand, which was founded in SLO in 1998 as one of the first microbreweries in California since Prohibition. They kept the downtown SLO Brewing Co. location (renaming it The Carissa) but today produce mostly seasonal batches at the tiny brewing facility within the restaurant, which sits on the ground floor beneath the partners’ cool, urban, suites-only hotel, The Lofts. Space is decidedly not an issue at The Rock, a 35,000-square-foot structure on a 3-acre campus. It encompasses a 30-barrel brewery; a spacious indoor-outdoor tasting room offering beers and beer-based beverages, plus great pub grub that includes house-made slow-smoked meats; the Central Coast’s most state-of-theart music venue, which accommodates 500 and doubles as an event space; a distillery that up-cycles rye from the brewing process; and a separate room for serving their private-brand Rod & Hammer (after Rodney and Hamish) SLO Stills whiskey. That last product embodies a blended surfercowboy aesthetic, which is strongly evidenced in SLO, the nearby Hollister Ranch, and other nearby locales and is reflected in the labeling and the bar’s décor: leather seating and cowhide carpets, an old safe (contents unknown), a classic 38

paddleboard from the 1920s, and reclaimed pilings from the Pismo Beach Pier. Perhaps what really sets the SLO Brewing Co. apart is their mix of products “It’s goofyland,” says Marshall, noting how many different things they are doing here. “We’re all over the place,” echoes Cegelski. But that’s very much by design. Opening at the peak of the microbrew craze, they knew better than to try to outcompete the big IPA brands, although the ten or so microbrews they make here are very good, indeed. So, they launched other things, using their excellent hefeweizen as the foundation for ten products — what Rod calls “beer takeoffs” — packaged in cans. Early into fruit-infused beers, they offer the top-selling blood-orange–infused Cali-Squeeze and the similar Mango-Squeeze. They have also created a microbrew version of the classic Mexican michelada cocktail, made with tomato juice and 22 spices, and sold under the Tio Rodrigo brand, and have dived into the burgeoning canned-wine market, earning a nearly perfect score for their Porch Pounder chardonnay. Their products, like The Rock itself, are in tune with what so many people are looking for today: something authentic, easy, meaningful and connected — to the past, to the present and, mainly, to people. Maybe that’s why SLO’s New Times newspaper named The Rock the city’s most family-friendly restaurant.

GOING LOCAL Meet Amber Lease, owner of WILDFLOWER WOMEN in Pismo Beach. Between raising her two sons and overseeing multiple Wildflower Women locations - a beautiful flagship store in Orcutt and another in the wine tasting hotspot of Los Olivos - she’s always on the go. We managed to catch up with Amber for a few delightful minutes in her impeccably curated Pismo boutique. Read on to hear what she had to say about growing Wildflowers, stepping outside of the box, and more. SOWING SEEDS

My parents owned Johnson’s for Children for nearly 47 years, so I literally grew up in retail. I always had the idea of either taking over their stores or opening my own. I knew I wanted to create something that truly reflected my style and sensibilities and Sandbox kids, my first store, was precisely that! I opened it in 2009, shortly after having my two sons - they were my actual little "sandbox kids."

EVOLVE AND THRIVE

By 2012 small mom and pop boutiques were feeling the heat from the online world. So, I said goodbye to a portion of my Sandbox Kids inventory and decided to cater to the moms who were already my customers and who had bought children’s clothing at my family’s stores for years. I decided to take on a world that was entirely new for me - women’s fashion! It was exciting, scary, and stressful, but so rewarding. I caught on quickly, and that allowed me to chase yet another passion - helping women to feel their best.

OUT OF THE BOX AND INTO THE DREAM CLOSET

Our stores are like curated dream closets, with an open and friendly environment, where each customer is attended to individually. The advice we always give to shoppers goes something like this - don’t be shy, take your time, and try it on, because you might surprise yourself by falling in love with something outside of “your” comfort box. We also offer every customer complimentary bottled water and of course, champagne! We are all about making the experience fun, practical, and personal.

"Our stores are like curated dream closets, with an open and friendly environment, where each customer is attended to individually." Amber Lease

CONSCIENTIOUS CURATING

The stores are relatively close to one another, so our customers can shop all three. From our Pismo Beach boutique to our valley location, there is something special for every walk of women. Although there’s a little crossover regarding the offerings, ultimately we tailor the selections to satisfy the lifestyles of each specific locale.

ON CENTRAL COAST STYLE

Central coast style is an eclectic combination of ranch, beach, equestrian, and professional looks for both the businesswomen and working mom.

CURRENTLY CRUSHING ON

For me, jumpers are the ”it” item right now! And I am not the only one - they’re proving to be a comfy new staple piece in my client’s wardrobes.

JULES D.

SAN LUIS OBISPO M E N ' S S T Y L E D E S T I N AT I O N

One step inside of clothing and lifestyle boutique, JULES D. quickly dispels the dated notion that men's fashion is boring. SLO's go-to for hip, high-quality, men's goods - shoes, bags, books, fragrance, grooming products, and a host of other fresh finds - is a feast for the eyes and will thrill seasoned shoppers and motivate the reluctant ones. For the past seven years owner, Jules DuRocher has been dressing a loyal legion of Central Coast customers. Years spent as an interior designer honed her cool aesthetic and eye for design. This experience is reflected in both the impeccably curated offerings and the store design - replete with a pool table topped with a myriad of merchandise and a Ducati Multistrada that serves as inspiration to explore the open road and to ditch the "dad" jeans for a pair of well-fitting Citizens of Humanity. The looks offered range from tailored Ted Baker suiting to street-smart John Varvatos. Bonus: inhouse stylists, Marcus and Terrence, are available to refine wardrobes or help select the perfect gift. We recently popped into Jules D. for a quick chat. Here's what she had to say about her background, looks she currently loves, the importance of finding the right fit, and more. Every Store Has a Story After a career in interior design, I found myself completely burned-out. So, about ten years ago, I went on a career walkabout and ended up managing a Ducati/Vespa shop. It was there that I discovered a love of "keeping shop" and creating the kind of environment that people love to visit, hang out, and find something cool. When I first opened Jules D., our focus wasn't necessarily apparel, but as time went on, guys loved what we were doing and demanded that we expand our selection.

Shopping Can Be Fun Customers are always met with a very welcoming and easygoing vibe. For those who don't exactly love to shop, we make it as painless as possible, even fun. Once a customer has had an enjoyable experience in the store, they become one of "our guys," and keep coming back for more. Sometimes they simply stop by to say" hi." First Round Picks The merchandise we bring into the store has to be something we would want ourselves. I gravitate towards nice things, that are built to last. Our selection is constantly evolving and often reflects whatever new interest we're experiencing in our lives. Fave Fall Collections I am super excited to have Billy Reid, Belstaff, and new fine leather goods from Bosca in the store right now. From Frumpytown to Fashionable We are all about finding the right fit for our guys. So many men out there don't realize they are walking around in the wrong size. Once one of our stylists has the opportunity to introduce them to a proper fit it's incredible how much better they look and feel.

One of my all-time favorite things to do to kick off the fall season is to "cluck" at The Three Speckled Hens antique show. Sometimes I come away with terrific finds and other times just a plethora of ideas and inspiration to recreate at the store or at home.

The weather is getting cooler so start building your outfit with the most neutral of foundations; a pretty lace bralette for an extra layer of warmth, under a crisp white shirt layered with a cozy oversized sweater, paired with skinny jeans or leather leggings.

In a world of big-box stores and corporate chains, our local business owners are working hard to preserve the distinctive character of San Luis Obispo. These independent establishments reflect our community, bring variety to our retail experience, and vitality to our neighborhoods.

CHERISSE SWEENEY

owner of

Basalt Interiors

Tell us about yourself and your business. I'm a designer with a passion for curating spaces that feel good. I'm so grateful to have made a career doing what I love. I treat the storefront as a living portfolio, so please, stay awhile, have a coffee and a nibble, sit on a very comfy sofa and let's talk about how you live, work, play and want your own space to feel. A visit to our store should be an experience. How did you land in retail? It's in my nature to hunt, gather, and serve, so retail has always felt very natural to me. I loved the corporate bustle in LA, where I worked for nearly 15 years with renowned architects and designers. I never thought I'd leave it, but now I really enjoy working in a smaller community where I get to provide an approachable, boutique design experience for all clients that walk through the door. What's the best part about owning a business in San Luis Obispo? That's easy: the community. My Great-Great Grandfather came to California from Italy during the Gold Rush. He and his brother did amazing things in developing our community, specifically downtown. They were true pioneers of the Wild West. I feel blessed to continue their humble legacy. PAT R I C K J A M E S A LEGACY OF STYLE

In 1962 Patrick James Mon Pere opened the doors to his very first namesake store, PATRICK JAMES. Since then the business has grown to include locations throughout the West and luckily for Central Coast men a smartly curated store in downtown SLO. The full range of apparel includes everything from suits and dress shirts to hoodies and shorts. Hanging beside the Patrick James private label is an excellent array of sportswear brands like Tommy Bahama, as well as contemporary collection Robert Graham.

Don't know a pant break from shore break? Not to worry - the Patrick James team is skilled in the art of ensuring proper fits for their diverse clientele. And, for those hard-to-fit guys, Patrick James offers made-to-measure custom-tailoring. The next generation, sons Mike, Pat Jr., and Clay, are now at the helm. We recently enjoyed a quick chat with Pat Jr., who is every bit as passionate about providing quality men's clothing as his father was over five decades ago. Below is what he had to say about the family business.

Tell us a little about yourself, the story of Patrick James.

Patrick James Mon Pere and son Pat Jr.

My Dad started the business 57 years ago in Fresno. His goal was to have the first natural shoulder clothing store on the West Coast. I was raised in the business, along with my two brothers and cousin.

With 12 store locations, a robust online presence, and national catalog, what makes shopping in the San Luis Obispo store unique?

Each store is merchandised for the community they serve. The SLO store carries a higher selection of tailored clothing. We've created some suit and blazer packages specifically for the students and alumni of Cal Poly. We also emphasize some upscale brands that lend themselves to SLO coastal living.

Describe the West Coast Classic style for which Patrick James is known.

For decades we were heavily invested in tailored clothing, and our tagline was "Purveyor to Gentleman." Our business has evolved to reflect both ours and our customer's lifestyles. More denim and lighter weight layers are worn on the West Coast - the style is relaxed, but still special.

After growing up in and now running the business, do you still get excited about specific collections you bring into the store? Yes, it's absolutely a passion of mine. The two things I love about the business are people and product. It's a great time for individual style, and I'm always looking for new and exciting things that I know will wow our customers.

You've probably dressed generations of men from the same family, is there a particular story involving multiple generations that stands out?

DINING & DESTINATIONS

My Dad passed earlier this year, and shortly after his lifelong best friend also passed away. At his friend's service, there were three generations of the family dressed in Patrick James. Throughout the reception, they each, at different times, came over to proudly show me the "PJ" label on the interior of their jackets. Those bonds and the shared history means a lot to me.

What else should customers know about Patrick James? We're all about

quality product, excellent service, and getting involved with our various communities. Because we tend to become friends with our customers, their word of mouth ends up being our best marketing. As a family business, every customer is important, and we love to make them happy.

FALL/WINTER 2019

Was there a specific moment or event that inspired you to set up shop in SLO? I came close to rooting in LA. Like most natives, the Central Coast was calling. I met my husband a few months after moving back, and 17 years later, we have two amazing kids that we get to raise here. I feel a connection to the Warden Building, the space Basalt now occupies. I remember standing in Jim's Campus Camera when it was here and all the smells of the old building. Some of my closest friends own businesses and work downtown as well. It's a very supportive environment. I just finished the restaurant design for what I consider to be a legacy project in a neighboring historic building, The Carrisa. What are you most coveting in the store right now? That's tough. It's the stuff that I'm waiting to get to the selling floor that's the most coveted. I love to observe the response from people that walk into the showroom. Fingers crossed they love it as much as I do. And the good news is, they usually do!

It would be an underestimate to say that BLACKWATER has come a long way since its inception in 1988. What was once a grassroots effort by two young mothers selling goods out of a garage is now a gorgeous new space in downtown SLO, lovingly-curated by motherdaughter duo and owners Erica Hamilton and Mary Alice Hamilton. Situated at the corner of Higuera and Broad, the sweet spot of downtown SLO, Blackwater is an open invitation to both nest and dress. In the mystical mélange of white sage smudge sticks, amethyst crystals, and CBD deodorant, you’ll also find a decidedly au courant selection of clothing, shoes, jewelry, and accessories dresses from covetable collection For Love & Lemons, gold metallic snakeskin booties by Matisse, and sexy pinstriped jumpsuits from Line & Dot. Be it for a fancy cocktail party or weekend two at Coachella, talented in-store stylists are ready to help coordinate head-to-toe looks from the visual feast of dreamy options. This local, family-owned boutique is a breath of fresh, XL incense stick-infused air and holds all of the beautiful things bohemian chic dreams are made of. Below, the pair dish about the details, dynamics, and joys of Blackwater. Tell us a bit about yourselves and the story of Blackwater. We are a locally owned mother-daughter business. We have been a downtown fixture for over 15 years evolving from a small clothing store to a full spectrum boutique.

What should someone who has never been to your store expect when they walk through the door? We hope they feel like they are being welcomed into our homes, immersed in a whimsical atmosphere, filled with eclectic clothing, locally sourced plants and curious home goods. How do you curate the space to strike a balance between offering a luxe look with an affordable price point? We only carry items that are genuinely worth the price and goods that we would wear or bring home. What are the joys and challenges of being in a motherdaughter business partnership? It's the best thing being together in a space where we can be creative and work in an industry that we are both passionate about. However, it can be a little mortifying when we show up somewhere wearing the same outfit. How do you define SLO style? It's the epitome of casual chic with a flair of bohemian Americana. What collection or item are you most coveting in the store right now? Our hat collections are on point. We carry the best highquality hats from Australia based Lack of Color and USbased Wyeth.

GUEST EDITOR Meet SHELLY VAN ROZEBOOM, interior designer and owner of Pismo Beach showroom and design studio COVE. With her toes now firmly planted in Central Coast sand and the ocean as her muse, Shelly artfully collaborates with clients on projects from small scale to new builds. We recently caught up with her in the store and talked decor, design, and lifelong dreams.

DREAMSCAPES

Cove is the realization of my lifelong dream to create a boutique that offers interior design services alongside a hand-selected assortment of vintage finds, artfully crafted jewelry, plush textiles, home accessories, and customizable furniture - all inspired by the beauty of the Central Coast and the lifestyle of California.

A HOME WITH A VIEW

My husband's job brought us to the Central Coast four years ago. We landed in Pismo because we're a family of beach lovers and love the feel of this small community. We couldn't afford a home with an ocean view in SoCal, but our new home has that plus a beautiful view of oak trees! We feel very grateful!

INSPO = AESTHETIC

Growing up, it was just my mom and me, and despite always living in small places, without much money, she had a knack for making our home look decorated and pulled together. I learned to do the same, but of course, over time, my taste got a little more expensive. I pull a lot of my inspiration from the Hamptons and Cape Cod, but also the relaxed boho vibe of California.

FORM + FUNCTION

I believe in making homes feel pulled together, but also livable. When I first started, I was all about customizing thrift store finds. Now I’m about investing in quality furniture that won't break down or look worn after a few years. Also, I love to mix my client's treasured family heirlooms into designs - it's these pieces that bring character to a room.

CURRENTLY CRUSHING ON

I just picked up an amazing Indian Tarahumara burden basket from New Mexico, and my creative husband reworked it into a fantastic light! It would be such a showstopper in an entryway or kitchen!

"Cove is inspired by the beauty of the Central Coast and the lifestyle of California." Shelly Van Rozeboom

DIFFERENT STROKES

I am always bringing things into Cove that feel like life on the coast. But if you are looking for something a little different, we can do that too! We love working with a variety of styles and tastes! And don't forget that we also do kitchen and bathroom design.

FALL/WINTER 2019

1.

Here, Shelly shares her top picks, tips, and tricks for capturing Coastal California Cool and Endless Summer Style.

2.

1. This watery, blue block print linen duvet is the perfect base for any bed. I love to layer prints, patterns, and pillows for a cozy feel. And of course, woven, rattan beds are a must if you are going for a coastal look! 2. These batik bone beads give a room an eclectic, traveled vibe, and I dig the contrast of brown and white! They look so pretty hanging from lamp necks, strewn across some books on a shelf or hanging from door knobs. 3. This book is my dream road trip! I always seem to add it when styling a coastal home because the pictures are GORGEOUS. And what’s even cooler is this book was written by two guys from Arroyo Grande and Shell Beach!

9. 3.

8.

4. I prefer coffee tables that aren’t too fussy. This one has a cool, organic look to it and the top is metal, so I wouldn’t feel bad about kicking my feet up on it. 5. Lately, I seem to start a living room off with a sofa that has a clean look to it. Then I tweak the style a bit with pillows, throws, etc. This one from Robin Bruce is eco-friendly and covered in a family-friendly performance fabric. Which means if your dog jumps up to cuddle with you (which my black Lab loves to do) and you spill your red wine, all you need to do is wipe it off with dish soap and water! 6. Nothing can be too precious when you live with pets, kids, or lots of people coming and going. This rug can be hosed off and is scrubbable, but it looks like wool and the texture is so pretty! Perfect for pretty much anywhere in your home, but I love it for a family room where we tend to eat and spend a lot of time.

7. 4.

7. This lamp is beyond good! It’s quite large, and the jute rope is chunky…making it a statement all on its own. It’s begging to be in a home with a view of the water!

6. 5.

8. Beautiful pillows make or break a room. Just like a good handbag or shoes for an outfit, great pillows can elevate a space. I’m a fan of linen ones, especially for the way they feel. I love to mix block printed pillows with embroidered ones to keep things interesting. 9. To break up all the hard surfaces in a

kitchen and to bring in an organic, coastal vibe, this spalted maple bowl does the trick. It would look beautiful displayed with fresh fruit and then used to make a big salad with finds from the farmers’ market.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF

W I N E IN PASO ROBLES

The sprawling Paso Robles American Viticulture Area (AVA) traces its origins to the late 1800s, when Franciscan missionaries planted the first vineyards at what is now known as the Santa Margarita Ranch. As they were then, the hills around “Paseo de Robles,” which means pass of the oaks, remain dotted with the namesake trees. The local wine industry really got started in the 1980s, when the 556,765-acre Paso Robles AVA was established. By 2000, it hosted 40,000 acres of vineyards planted with 60 grape varieties in 11 newly established sub-AVAs.

1790 As they did throughout California wine regions, Franciscan friars planted the first wine grapes in the Paso Robles region.

1973-77 Gary Eberle and Cliff Ciacobine establish the Estrella River Winery, the AVA’s largest winery, now owned by Nestlé/ Beringer.

Early 1920s Polish concert pianist Ignace Paderewski plants the first Petite Syrah grapes.

1882 The first Zinfandel vines, California’s oldest grape variety, are planted by Indiana-born rancher Andrew York on what is now York Mountain Winery.

Late 1960s – early 1970s Some of the first Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines are planted by Dr. Stanley Hoffman, with support from legendary UC Davis enologist André Tchelistcheff.

LAY OF THE LAND

The Paso Robles AVA is defined by the proximity and modulating influence of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia mountains. Vineyards in the 11 sub-AVAs grow at elevations from a few hundred feet to more than 2,000 feet above sea level. A key factor is the “Templeton Gap,” where a 500- to 700- foot drop in elevation between the Paso Robles region and Estero Bay causes cool ocean air and with it, fog, to cool the vines at night. Summer high daytime temperatures between 85 and 100 degrees give way to nighttime temperatures that are usually 40 to 50 degrees lower, the largest diurnal temperature swing of any California wine region. Those conditions extend the growing season, allowing grapes to ripen slowly, achieve excellent balance between sugars and acid.

PC: PasoWine.com

1996 An AVA expansion of 52,600 acres includes many vineyards in the region’s western hills.

2016 Sunset magazine names Paso Robles the Best Wine Region in the West.

2010 Wine Spectator magazine rates Saxum Vineyard’s James Berry Vineyard 2007 the best wine in the world.

2006 Rhône varietals, covering only 100 acres in Paso Robles, are expanded with 2,200 acres of new plantings.

2013 11 sub-AVAs are approved for the Paso Robles AVA, which Wine Enthusiast magazine names its top wine region of the year.

The EDNA VALLEY AVA (3,000 acres of vineyards) is situated in an east-west-oriented valley just southeast of San Luis Obispo and bounded by the Santa Lucia Mountains to the west. It abuts the Arroyo Grande AVA (1,200 acres) along its southeastern edge. Grapes were first planted here by Spanish missionaries, but then row crops took over for many decades. The Edna Valley AVA was established in 1987 and Arroyo Grande in 1990. The two AVAs are often talked about as if they are one, with good reason. Both share features found in other California winegrowing regions — most notably a Mediterranean climate and the moderating influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean, which extends the growing season — Edna Valley has California’s longest growing season — allowing grapes to experience longer hang time, resulting in greater balance and complex flavors. Both AVAs are favorable to grapes that prefer the cool weather typical of the area, and the Burgundian varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate in both AVAs, with some of those grapes being made into sparkling wine. While a small and relatively young region, these two AVAs are home to some world-class wines. DININGANDDESTINATIONS.COM

1. EPIC CENTER: The heart of Downtown SLO never misses a beat with its dynamic community, cultural, retail, and restaurant offerings. The verdant, tree-lined streets are home to a variety of treasured local businesses - boutiques, galleries, cafes, museums, bars, and hotels. Visit the historic San Luis Obispo Mission Plaza for a concert, take a stroll along the San Luis Obispo Creek for an urban wildlife sighting, or simply shop and eat your way around this fabulous downtown. 2. GRAPE EXPECTATIONS: Whether you're a newbie out for a laid-back day of casual tasting or the serious sip, swish, and spit type, the world-class Wine Tasting experience in Paso Robles and SLO includes options for all. California's breathtaking Central Coast is home to over 250 wineries - ranging from the intimate boutique to the big and burgeoning. So, be sure to set aside a little time for wine and start exploring. For more on SLO Wine Country flip to page 56. 3. EAT YOUR VEGGIES AND MORE: Every Thursday evening, locals and visitors gather to eat, shop, and indulge in the bounty of the region at the Downtown SLO Farmers' Market. From 6:00-9:00, several blocks of downtown SLO (Higuera Street between Nipomo and Osos streets) are shut down and transformed into a culinary and cultural Nirvana. Explore over 120 stalls, filled with offerings ranging from the fantastic and familiar - locally-grown produce, bread, and authentic BBQ - to unique specialties from SLO area restaurants and artisans. Where else could you try kombucha, craft brew, seaweed, and nitro-crafted ice cream all within the same block? Special events, activities and live entertainment top off this dynamic experience. For more info go to: downtownslo.com 4. BACK TO SCHOOL: Established in 1901 California Polytechnic State University, also known as Cal Poly SLO, is a nationally-ranked public university located on the northern edge of San Luis Obispo. The main campus bustles with over 21,000 students and covers 1,321 acres. Cal Poly's motto is "learn by doing" so if you want to know more about this esteemed institution do take one of the student-led, 90-minute, student-led walking tours. calpoly.edu 5. TAKE A HIKE: Sought after summit and favorite locals hike Bishop Peak is the most prominent of the "Nine Sisters" or volcanic Morros which stretch across San Luis Obispo. The climb to the top takes anywhere from one to two hours and handsomely rewards hikers with spectacular views of the city and surrounding peaks and valleys. Other popular hiking destinations that deliver spectacular views are Cerro San Luis, and Morro View. For directions and more info on these hikes and others head to hikespeak.com 6. ON A MISSION: Founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1772, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Mission is a treat for history buffs, believers, and anyone who appreciates the beauty of a bygone era. The current building, constructed in the typical mission style - from adobe, with porticoed arcades, and topped with a red-tiled roof - dates back to 1793. The tours are free, and a daily mass is held. Stroll the grounds to see the museum, gift shop, and courtyard gardens - a visual feast of fruit trees, cacti, old oaks, flowers and more. Relax on the grassy slope of the Mission Plaza, which overlooks the San Luis Creek - the perfect spot for a post-tour picnic. missionsanluisobispo.org 7. RAISE A PINT: Tap into SLO's abundant craft brew scene where over a dozen local breweries concoct hundreds of innovative varieties. Take a break from swirling and sipping and blow a little foam off the top of a fresh cold one. From irresistible IPAs and creamy stouts to whimsical white ales and seasonal one-offs, the diverse selection of award-winning hoppy libations leaves even the most discriminating of palates satisfied.

8. SURF'S UP: Surfing is a way of life in California, as well as the official state sport. And just to be clear, SoCal doesn't have the corner market on all the sweet surf spots. Although the Central Coast's 85mile stretch of pristine coastline may be short on pointbreaks, it's big on beach breaks. Typically, the best surf season here is fall, when surfers and S.U.P.ers can capitalize on west swells. Check out one of the many local surf shops for lessons, rentals, and valuable advice for beginners. 9. ART APPRECIATION: For an impressive collection of contemporary works by California artists, look no further than the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. The museum's continually updated exhibits feature avant-garde paintings, sculptures, and photography, and the convenient downtown "cultural corridor" location and free admission make SLOMA a must-see. The museum offers docent-led tours as well as cell-phone app and downloadable MP3 audio tours. 1010 Broad Street, www.sloma.org 10. A STICKY SITUATION: For decades visitors and locals have adorned this narrow 70-foot long alleyway known as Bubblegum Alley. Located off Higuera between Broad and Garden Street, this rainbow-hued destination is bedecked with millions of pieces of previously-chewed bubblegum, making it a rather off-beat, Instagramworthy hotspot.

FALL/WINTER 2019

o W B L L oF GoLD U F L U o S A Lablabi, known as “poor man’s stew” in Tunisia, is anything but - Chef AYDA ROBANA’S take it’s bursting with rich flavors, bright ingredients, and promises to satisfy the fiercest of fall appetites. This dish speaks to my heart in more ways than one. It's a hearty and satisfying one-pot meal. In Tunisia, it's known as the "poor man's stew" because the ingredients are simple. I first had it with my dad in my grandmother's neighborhood at a sandwich shop called Ammi Nasser. I remember smelling the spicy cumin-filled broth and devouring the chickpeas and leaving the garnishes to the side. As a young adult, my friends and I would stop for a 3:00 am bowl of Lablabi on our way home from a night of dancing at the clubs. Now it's a nourishing meal I make in the fall and winter months for my family, friends, and clients. I've added a few unconventional twists, starting with tomato paste and ending with kale. Lablabi is a great vegan dish, but as an option, you can add an egg or a bit of good quality tuna on top when serving.
