Live your day the SLO way. Take your foot off the gas and relax, feel the embrace of the oak-studded hills and the clear blue skies. Meet the friendly locals, get into an easier rhythm and then dig in to the bounty of Golden State riches that awaits. Wind down and wine down, dine well, hike a gentle trail, head for the beach or go shopping downtown. This is your invitation to ...
explore San Luis Obispo!
T
he scenery changes constantly as you move through the Central Coast, and the landscape is lovely no matter where you look. Of course, California’s bounty of seafood and locally grown or produced fruits, vegetables, nuts, olives, wines and beers is evident everywhere. You’ll find honey makers and lavender farms, u-pick-'em apple orchards and cool pizzerias, gelato and gin fizzes, oyster shooters and beer-steamed clams and mussels, steak houses and burger joints. There are farmers’ markets and backyard fruit stands, impressive high-end wineries and cozy boutique operations. The Central Coast’s Mediterranean climate means ideal weather for most of the year, with beautiful sunny days even in mid-winter. Summer brings long days on the beach, where no child ever needs a screen to be amused. Whales cruise the coast, seals and sea otters hunt closer to shore, cyclists pedal the pavement, and families hit the beach or the hiking trail. Multiple golf courses await, as do hot springs, spas, antique shops and galleries where you can purchase a local artist’s powerful depiction of the green or golden (depending on the time of year) oak-studded hills that are emblematic of the area. California cares for the natural environment. Wild animals and wild places are protected, and visitors reap the benefits in pristine landscapes and sightings of the creatures that belong to them. The Golden State has many faces. Together, these five Central Coast destinations are one — one that will leave you quietly and simply happy.

SAN LUIS OBISPO
The easygoing acronym for San Luis Obispo - SLO - sounds like “slow” and evokes the same easygoing approach to good living. This is a place to relax, pull out of the fast lane and enjoy life at a soothing smell-the-roses pace. A good strategy for a day is to plan a little and then follow whatever grabs your interest. This Central Coast city of 50,000 is beautifully situated about ten miles from the coast in a valley surrounded by oak-studded hills and dominated by Cerro San Luis Mountain, one of about nine ancient volcanic plugs in the area. You’ll find miles of cycling, walking, horseback riding and hiking trails. You can golf or go wine tasting at a vineyard, and stay in anything from a B&B to a luxury hotel. The intimate downtown has everything: galleries, movie theaters, and restaurants of all kinds, microbreweries, and wine-tasting rooms serving the Central Coast’s famous vintages. With so much in such close proximity, you can SLO down and still miss nothing.
PASO ROBLES Paso Robles has become a major wine center,
with more than 200 wineries in two American Viticulture Areas spread among the gorgeous rolling countryside. With the vineyards have come great restaurants, cheese and charcuterie, cool coffee houses, bakeries, detour-worthy boutiques, microbreweries and a lovely mix of unique lodgings that includes some truly elegant country options. Grab the best produce at three weekly farmers’ markets, chill in the freshwater waves at Ravine Water Park, carry a picnic to the lake in Barney Schwartz Park, soak up some aviation history at the Estrella Warbird Museum or recall the Old West at the Pioneer Museum.

MORRO BAY
Named for 576-foot-high Morro Rock, this seaside town of 10,000 is a natural outdoor playground. You can kayak in the harbor, with the rock looming above you, go surfing or SUPing, go whale watching trip or cast your line from a day boat (but not close to shore, as the entire bay is a no-take state marine reserve). Some 20,000 migratory birds winter here, and 30 percent of California’s endangered snowy plover population lives here. Morro Rock itself supports a pair of nesting peregrine falcons.
AVILA BEACH The little town of 1,500 on San Luis Obispo Bay
is an easy place to spend a few days. Natural mineral hot springs are a main attraction, as are Hartford Pier, the nine-hole Avila Beach Golf Resort and the Point San Luis Light, built in 1890. But the big draw is that broad, sandy beach and the boardwalk behind it, with its wine-tasting rooms, restaurants, ice cream parlors and shops. Pedal

or stroll along the three-mile Bob Jones Trail, or just settle back and soak it all in, because there’s nowhere to go; you’re already here. Naturally, fresh fish and Central Coast wines are on the menu.
PISMO BEACH
Yep, here on the Central Coast’s own version of Daytona Beach, you can cruise the sand in your car and camp right beside the waves. Pismo Beach is a small town with a big pier and a singular coastal strand. It’s ideal for spotting whales, seals, seabirds and the occasional sea otter — and then to settle in at night for some fresh clams, crab or other local ocean delights. The vibe is easygoing, the preferred footwear is flip-flops and the shopping is old-time easy. Pismo is an oceanside classic.

CLASSY COMFORT TO RICH SPECIALTIES
Stick with spaghetti and meatballs or branch out with Pasta California: artichoke hearts, shiitake mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes with penne in a light cream sauce. Eggplant with capellini and ricotta is among MacMillan’s favorites, but it’s a close tie with the rack of lamb in a rosemary reduction paired with the deep-red, Italian Barbaresco.
CHANGING DIETS
Rosa’s evolving offerings meet the changing tastes and needs of customers. Standards anchor the menu for old-time comfort, but gluten-free options from Alfredo to quinoa pasta are featured for modern diets. “We serve excellent quality. That’s our style,” MacMillan said.
ROSA’S: ITALIAN TRADITION IN PISMO BEACH For 30 years, Rosa’s Italian Ristorante has been a family affair from kitchen to customer. Owner/chef Doug MacMillan honed his craft at the elbows of his parents, Rosa and Bill MacMillan. The trio developed the recipes, created the menus and built Pismo’s cornerstone Italian eatery. Doug proudly proclaims, “They weren’t just my parents; they were my best friends. A lot of love goes into the food." SERVING IS AN HONOR Doug takes it as a compliment when customers choose his dining room. Warm lighting, ample seating, a dining room fireplace and sunlit patio welcome intimate parties of two to festive parties of 12 for regional Italian fare served within earshot of the Pacific. A LOCAVORE'S DILEMMA
Pfaff focuses on his passion for local fare.
WINE LOVERS’ PARADISE
Puricelli dedicates her energy to maintaining a vast stock of wines. She pays particular attention to local winemakers selected for their uniqueness and their vintages’ purposes and limited availability.
RIBS WITH A BUZZ
Pfaff ’s boundless energy is reflected in his coffee-and-fennel-encrusted, coffee-braised short ribs with an espresso demi-glace. Pair with an Aaron Petite Sirah blend with its coffee notes and cocoa flavors.
MAKE IT A PARTY
With live music offered three days a week, Happy Hour and Sunday Supper, every day is a party at Lido. Watch for $5 glasses of wine starting at 5 p.m. or bring your own: there is no corkage fee.
LIDO: A SHELL BEACH CELEBRATION
Chef Richard Pfaff and Sommelier Robin Puricelli believe in celebrating the everyday with customers at Lido Restaurant & Lounge. The freedom to create and explore is reflected in the energy they put into their menu and wine list. “Look at this view. What’s not to celebrate,” Puricelli asked from her seat in the glass-front dining room overlooking the Pacific.

“Food is an emotional experience. It’s information for our bodies. If it’s right, it expresses beautifully.” - Nicola Allegretta
KEEPING IT LOCAL
The chef begins his day mingling at farmers and fish markets to gather organic, grass-fed, locally grown and caught ingredients. He ends it with his own plate of lasagna. “By the time I get to it, it’s mellowed for hours. It’s the best.”
ALL EARS FOR FINE WINES
Every meal begins with freshly baked garlic bread knots. Follow them with Orecchiette e Braciole: ear-shaped pasta with rolled, stuffed top sirloin steak simmered in a luscious tomato sauce. “American wines have really improved, but the ideal pairing here is a nice Italian chianti.”
A MENU AS FRESH AS THE SEASON
While their Linguine alle Vongole paired with a Venezie Pinot Grigio is a year-round favorite, watch the menu for specials created for the day’s finds.
MAMA’S MEATBALL: FAMILY FAVORITES AND FINE WINES IN DOWNTOWN SLO
Nicola Allegretta simply wanted to feed his family the healthy, flavorful meals of his coastal Italian upbringing. Then came the food truck, growing customer demand and ultimately Mama’s Meatball in downtown San Luis Obispo. Expansion may follow customer demand, but menus track the seasons. THE PEOPLE’S PASTA The kitchen turns out fresh, melt-in-your-mouth pasta served with light, aromatic sauces, fresh fish or tender, juicy meatballs. You might even spot Mama Maria Allegretta hand rolling the signature dish. Brothers Luca and Nicola Allegretta

PERFECT PAIRINGS
Fancher recommends the tuna tartar served with crispy wonton chips and a glass of Deovlet Brut Rosé, or his favorite: rib-eye or New York steak with a glass of Herman Story Milk & Honey Red Blend.
OX + ANCHOR: ELEGANCE WITH A SIDE OF LEVITY IN SLO
Among the Central Coast’s steakhouses, only Chef Ryan Fancher’s Ox + Anchor features crispy duck leg and tater tots infused with bone marrow. A variety of beef cuts and myriad wine offerings aim for an elegant steakhouse feel. Those tater tots keep it real.
FROM MICHELIN TO PATIO Lessons learned in a career that spans from Santa Barbara steakhouse busboy to New York City three-star Michelin kitchen all come into play at Ox + Anchor. “The Michelin-star life was interesting, but not for me. “We do authenticity. There’s nothing invented. It’s just done according to recipe, tradition and history." - Luciano Bardinelli
OSSO BUCO IS THE THING
For nearly 50 years, Bardinelli’s fans have savored his osso buco. He pairs the wine-stewed veal shank with “of course a good, super Tuscan red or Barolo - some good, heavy, classic Italian wine.”
A SNAIL’S PACE
Dishes invite savoring from the escargot a la bourguignonne and minestrone zuppa to the hand-made pasta and traditional pizzas.
HEARTY FOOD, HEARTY HANDSHAKE After a meal focused on freshness and customer satisfaction, Bardinelli bids addio with hearty handshakes, kind words and a smile. “We satisfy their expectations.”
LA LOCANDA: NORTHERN ITALY SERVED IN DOWNTOWN SLO
Luciano Bardinelli has run restaurants large and small and served the everyman and the rock star from Italy to Seattle to Las Vegas. Today, his 10-table La Locanda marks the culmination of a dream and locals have lapped it up and become like family. SIMPLE SUCCESS The menu targets Northern Italian fare: a handful of antipasti, four salads, three soups and entrees that harken back to his Milano home. It’s traditional, simple and noteworthy in its consistency. Entrees focus on the marriage between select flavors. 1137 GARDEN STREET, SAN LUIS OBISPO • 805.548.1750 • LALOCANDASLO.COM

LA BODEGA: TEXAS-SIZED TAPAS IN PISMO BEACH WHEN OWNER Teresa Cordeiro sees strangers sharing tables, food, wine and conversation at La Bodega she beams. “I love the sharing that goes with sitting down for a meal, transferring ideas and taking the time to relish the company and the food. When I see people from one table suddenly getting up to say ‘hello’ to the neighboring table or spotting friends by happenstance, it’s very magical,” Cordeiro said. Born in Lisbon, Portugal and raised in the U.S., Cordeiro often traveled back to Europe to visit family and friends. Her experiences there, combined with the menu of a family with modest means and a thriving garden, developed her food sensibilities. “I learned to eat what was available, what was seasonal, what was sustainable, not just whatever my palate wanted,” she said. La Bodega’s menu follows suit. The Greek salad only includes tomatoes when the locally harvested fruits are at their plumpest and juiciest. Winter brought heaping servings of cauliflower and kale, and Brussels sprouts will hit the menu when the local harvest is on. La Bodega partners with local farmers who provide produce packed with fresh-picked flavor: Cortez, Bautista, Chavez, Dominguez and Hayashi Farms. Monterey’s own Del Monte Meats provides the beef. Oysters come from Grassy Bar Oysters in Morro Bay where she also shops for lingcod and rock cod. Rich, flavorful cheeses of Central Coast Creamery and Atascadero’s Alle-Pia Fine Cured Meats combine on La Bodega’s stellar charcuterie. She lights up when she talks about food, customers, and the rustic elegance of her restaurant. A short bar and farm-style seating bring folks together for classic paella or flaky Empanadas de Chorizo. “We deliver a casual yet fine dining experience without the white tablecloth. I hate the white tablecloth when what I really want to do is relax, enjoy good company, and be casual,” Cordeiro said. As much as she enjoys blending ingredients, pairing food with beverage, so does she enjoy mixing food with pleasure in the Spanish tradition of tapas — small shared plates filled with foods from around the world. La Bodega defies the image of tapas as mere appetizers. Served in deep, cast-iron baking dishes, the ample offerings reflect international flavors: tenderloin bites, grilled octopus, roasted Brussels sprouts, brie fondue and more. “Nobody goes away hungry. It’s fun to eat your way through the menu,” Cordeiro said. 790 PRICE STREET, PISMO BEACH • 805.295.5400 • LABODEGAPISMO.COM

DiFronzo sources tomatoes, basil, garlic, dandelion greens, citrus and broccoli rabe from his own 13-acre farm.
GIUSEPPE’S CUCINA RUSTICA WHERE TEAMWORK BRINGS PEAK RESTAURANT PERFORMANCE
First-generation Italian-American Joe DiFronzo learned hard work, teamwork and dedication on the football field and developed an appreciation for great food at home. For 33 years, he has melded those passions in one scrumptious, award-winning effort: mastering kitchen and business at Giuseppe’s Cucina Rustica in downtown San Luis Obispo and Giuseppe’s Cucina Italiana in Pismo Beach. “IT’S EASY TO GIVE IT YOUR ALL when your direct boss is there, doing the hard work in the restaurant day in and day out. He’s a very hands-on guy. That work ethic carries from the top down,” said General Manager Aurash Afshar. DiFronzo was raised in his uncles’ Italian delis and bakeries. He grew their basil and stocked their shelves. So perhaps it shouldn’t have come as a surprise when this political science major opened his first restaurant as a Cal Poly senior project in 1988. DiFronzo provided all the cooking and management for that first eight-table eatery in Pismo Beach. He soon moved into his current location on Price Street, and in 2007 opened his first downtown San Luis Obispo location. That eatery moved down the street in 2016 to the historic Sinsheimer building where sleek glass meets rustic brick and white table cloths don classic dishes. After serving as nose guard for Cal Poly Football, DiFronzo found himself shifting to coach mode as he ran his own growing team of restaurant staff. Today, he directs more than 150 employees serving two restaurants with banquet space for parties up to 100. 40
DINING & DESTINATIONS
“This has been more than a career, it’s been my lifetime ambition to provide something special to my community, my family, myself,” DiFronzo said. Two full-time pasta cooks spend their days making round after round of fresh pasta to serve in flowing mounds to grateful guests. DiFronzo tops them with authentic Italian ingredients he has hand selected and tasted. DiFronzo sources tomatoes, basil, garlic, dandelion greens, citrus and broccoli rabe from his own 13-acre farm. He works with local fisherman for plates like Pacific Halibut alla Gorgonzola, an oven-roasted fish plate drizzled with gorgonzola sauce and served with crispy polenta. His menus include seasonal specialties like Sonoma Valley organic rabbit served over house-made fettuccini with ragu and shaved pecorino. There’s a roasted beet salad with strawberries and candied walnuts, a salciccia pizza featuring house-made sausage and a plate of Morro Bay sand dabs, all available for pairing with DiFronzo’s own wines. 849 MONTEREY STREET, SAN LUIS OBISPO • 805.541.9922 891 PRICE STREET, PISMO BEACH • 805.773.2870 GIUSEPPESRESTAURANT.COM

BAXTER MOERMAN STUDIO & SHOWROOM
Each exquisite piece populating the cases of the downtown SLO fine jewelry store, Baxter Moerman, is designed and handmade by cofounders, Matthew Baxter and Matthew Moerman, alongside their in-house goldsmith, Tony. Since its founding in 2009, artisanal craftsmanship has defined the brand’s aesthetic. A wide variety of gemstones drive design decisions, while striking a perfect balance between form and function, with stunning results. The casually sophisticated, gallery-like storefront has a modern, yet organic vibe. Abundant natural light, a warm walnut wood interior, and most importantly, friendly greetings meld together to liberate customers from the stuffiness or formality that sometimes comes with an upscale jewelry store setting. There’s also the welcome tail-wagging committee, whose members include the owners’ canine companions who regularly accompany the two “Matthews” to work. Now, onto the essential ingredients that combine to create the unique collection - ethically-sourced diamonds, precious gemstones, platinum, and recycled 18k gold. From organic-shaped moonstones wrapped in brushed gold, pastel colored sapphires set in polished platinum, to classic solitaire engagement rings, Baxter Moerman is destined to adorn, no matter what your heart desires. We recently popped into the showroom to meet the owners and ogle over the collection. Here’s what they had to say about Baxter Moerman beginnings, the showroom experience, and more. Origin Story We met while working as bench goldsmiths at another local shop here in downtown San Luis Obispo. Our design aesthetic, work ethic, and love for making jewelry drew us together. The Baxter Moerman Experience We offer a pretty laid back and hospitable environment based on how we’d like to be treated. First and foremost, we listen to our customer’s needs and go from there.
"We stock our store entirely with jewelry that we have designed and made."
Feel Good Goods We joined Ethical Metalsmiths to learn how we can help make our industry cleaner and more ethical. Supply chain transparency, labor conditions, and environmental impact are huge concerns for us. Gemstone Inspo Our designs are often described as clean, simple, and classic. Mostly, we start with a gemstone that captures our interest and design around it in a way that accentuates its distinct beauty. Additional FYI We stock our store entirely with jewelry that we have designed and made. In addition to the two of us, we have a full-time goldsmith, Tony, who helps produce our designs. We both ride our bikes to work every day, and we have two shop dogs, Penny and Indi, who like to hang out in the store with us. We’re also excited to be celebrating our 10th year in business. 1128 Garden Street • 805.801.9117 baxtermoerman.com • @baxtermoerman

"AndBe style is sophisticated yet fun with an emphasis on clean lines, quality fabrics and a minimalistic look." - Andrea Dewit & Beatrice Dubes Asseo
Paso Robles has more in common with Bordeaux than you might think. Besides acres of Cabernet Sauvignon vines covering its rolling hills, thanks to AndBe owners, Andrea Dewit and Beatrice Dubes Asseo, it is also home to a low-key, highly-curated boutique, not unlike the kind you'd be thrilled to discover in the South of France. Although the two friends - Dewit from Austria and Asseo from France landed in California decades ago, their like-minded design aesthetics have remained firmly rooted in the carefree, yet chic sensibility that defines the casual European lifestyle, as well as their sophisticated gallery of goods. Below the two dish about AndBe beginnings, current cravings and more. TO BE ANDBE We have been friends for many years and are both from Europe. Seven years ago, we decided to open a multi-brand store with highend clothing and home decor, which we couldn't find anywhere else in SLO county at that time. In March of 2013, we found the perfect location on the park and started AndBe - a combination of both our names, Andrea and Beatrice. VACATION INSPIRATION We get inspiration during our regular travels to Europe, and when we like a
brand and feel it's a good fit for our store, we contact the label directly. We also visit fashion shows in LA and New York. CENTRAL PASO PARK SWEET We are located in downtown Paso Robles, on the park, surrounded by small boutiques and restaurants. The heart of Paso is a growing tourist destination, and we have customers from around the world who come to visit the Paso wine region. CURRENT COVETABLE COLLECTIONS At the moment, we are excited to introduce new Parisian Designer Diega, known for beautiful fabrics, pastel tones and ethnic patterns. We recently unpacked a collection of beautiful light linen dresses and tops in neutral tones from the Italian label Transit Par Such, along with a cashmere line from Paychi Guh and jeans and chic clothing by the German label Closed. Also, the luxury Belgian linen brand Libeco and Italian handbag Campomaggi always tops our list of covetable collections. WHEN AT HOME... GUEST EDITOR CHERISSE SWEENEY, Guest Editor, and owner of downtown SLO design house and home decor store, BASALT INTERIORS, shares her blueprints for creating a conscious living space. For this local designer transforming a hectic house into a tranquil home is all about how the little soulful details and meaningful touches create a purposeful big picture. Read on for her advice on creature comforts, awakening the senses, creating all the feels, and more. Our living spaces can have a profound impact on not only how we function, but also how we feel. And now more than ever, home should be your happy place the place where you feel most relaxed and hopefully even a bit inspired. And function needn't be compromised by form - it’s about finding a balance between the two and what works for you. Your home should be a reflection of you and the life you aspire to live. One of the most satisfying parts of my job is helping clients figure out how to identify and translate their definition of beauty, inspiration, and comfort into a peaceful interior sanctuary. Read on for a few design tips I live by. • INFUSE WITH INTENTION Before you
invest, make sure an item or object has a special meaning or essential function that will serve you well.
• IF IT MAKES YOU HAPPY Surround
yourself with colors and things that bring you joy.
• GROUNDED IN NEUTRALS Subdued earth tones can have a powerful calming effect and allow art or special pieces to take center stage.
• CREATE COMFORT It’s not only about aesthetics. Your home should also be a physically comfortable space to occupy. • MAKE IT WORK I always find a way to incorporate a family heirloom or other treasure that is important to my clients.
• CONSCIOUSLY CONSUME Whenever

PILLOW TALK The ubiquitous throw pillow is the unsung hero of interiors. Add a few for texture, comfort, or a pop of color.

LET IT GLOW Proper lighting is paramount for creating the right mood and this little gem, with a ceramic base and raffia shade sets the perfect tone.
GOOD VIBE GIFTS Jewelry always makes a lovely gift, especially when it "protects" the wearer. The evil eye charm on this necklace is a symbol of protection and is said to bring good luck.
MAKING SCENTS Awaken the olfactory system with an aromatherapy candle. I light one after a long day, and it's like taking a soothing mental trip to the spa.
UP CLOSE & PERSONAL Create an intimate space - sans electronics and technology - with a cozy seating arrangement, living greens and soft lighting. IT"S A WRAP Scarves like this 100% silk beauty can serve double duty to sustainably wrap a small gift and then be worn by the lucky recipient.

GOING LOCAL From San Luis Obispo to Ventura and locations in between, premier tile and stone company, TILECO, has got the Central Coast covered – literally. President, Gina Flint, shares a bit about the business, as well as a room by room mood board highlighting a few of the top tile trends from 2020.
ABSOLUTELY FLOORED
Tileco is a family-owned business that was started in 1977 by the Muscio family in Santa Maria. My parents, Mike and Margaret Burchiere, purchased the company in the '80s and opened the other locations. I am a product of growing up in the industry- living and breathing tile since I was born. I never thought I would end up in the business, but here I am, and I love it. We pulled my husband in as well; he is the CFO, and Bert Muscio runs the Santa Barbara store. My sister, Nikki, is in charge of all of our Social Media. We truly are a family run business, and our roots run deep on the Central Coast.
LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS
We opened the SLO showroom three and a half years ago and transferred two employees from other branches to manage it - Jeremy Swanson, who's father Don runs the Santa Maria location, also grew up in the industry. Joining him is long-time family friend, Sarah Preston, who was a customer when we pulled her in. We have an amazing, young, vivacious, and fun team that does a great job. We feel fortunate to have a successful business in this community and enjoy contributing to its beauty.
GOTCHA COVERED
Yes, we provide design services and consultations daily, and we don't charge for samples, sketches, or even job site visits. We love helping our customers bring their visions to life.
TILE-ICIOUS TRANSFORMATIONS
Tile lasts a long time, so it is important to choose wisely. My mother always says, "if you love it, you will love it forever." We are experts at getting customers to that "I LOVE IT!" moment.
PAVING THE WAY

The colors, textures, and warmth are unique to our area and influence how we decorate our homes. 2140 Santa Barbara Avenue, SLO 805.439.4601 • tilecodist.com

MAJOR FANBASE The repeating pattern of this glossy ceramic wall tile reminds me of an M.C. Escher print - it's fun and fanciful, but not overpowering. The selections from this new collection include three patterns, each in three different colorways, all of which add a rich, yet decidedly modern layer to any interior. The one pictured here, called Leaf, is probably my fave. The woven Ginko leaf fan shape has an organic vibe and at the same time, a subdued graphic quality. Design tip: A tiled wall in a dining room is a perfect alternative to wallpaper - you don't have to worry about it fading from UV exposure, and it's so easy to clean.
SUBWAY, A NEW WAY The hand-hewn artisanal look of these ceramic tiles elevates any space, especially when it comes to perfecting a subdued neutral palette or the addition of a perfect pop of color. Also, there are so many ways to style and apply this shape of tile - horizontally, vertically, staggered, herringbone style, etc. - making for a genuinely creative process with loads of design-driven options.
Fit to be Tiled
MAKE A BACKSPLASH! Color isn't the only way to make a statement. The combination of polished marble, with mosaic and a brass inlay detailing, is such a chic way to add pattern without overwhelming a space. The luxe look can add an understated touch of glamour to a fireplace surround, backsplash, powder room, or master suite bathroom.
COASTAL CRAFTSMAN COVERAGE You can't go wrong with hexagon tiles, as they provide a timeless update to almost any room in a house. And these naturally made six-sided ceramic beauties come in a variety of colors and finishes. I love the style selections from this collection of quarry tiles. They're made by using a unique hand glazing technique that blends shades sort of like a watercolor painting, making them a perfect pairing with the coastal cottages and classic Craftsman style homes sprinkled throughout the SLO region.

Wine in Paso Robles
The vineyards, varietals, and local lore to make the most of your visit to the central coast's dynamic wine country.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF WINE In PASO ROBLES The sprawling Paso Robles American Viticulture Area (AVA) traces its origins to the late 1800s, when Franciscan missionaries planted the first vineyards at what is now known as the Santa Margarita Ranch. As they were then, the hills around “Paseo de Robles,” which means pass of the oaks, remain dotted with the namesake trees. The local wine industry really got started in the 1980s, when the 556,765-acre Paso Robles AVA was established. By 2000, it hosted 40,000 acres of vineyards planted with 60 grape varieties in 11 newly established sub-AVAs.
Early 1920s Polish concert pianist Ignace Paderewski plants the first Petite Syrah grapes.
1790 As they did throughout California wine regions, Franciscan friars planted the first wine grapes in the Paso Robles region.
1882 The first Zinfandel vines, California’s oldest grape variety, are planted by Indiana-born rancher Andrew York on what is now York Mountain Winery.
1973-77 Gary Eberle and Cliff Ciacobine establish the Estrella River Winery, the AVA’s largest winery, now owned by Nestlé/ Beringer.

The
LAY OF THE LAND
The Paso Robles AVA is defined by the proximity and modulating influence of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia mountains. Vineyards in the 11 sub-AVAs grow at elevations from a few hundred feet to more than 2,000 feet above sea level. A key factor is the “Templeton Gap,” where a 500- to 700- foot drop in elevation between the Paso Robles region and Estero Bay causes cool ocean air and with it, fog, to cool the vines at night. Summer high daytime temperatures between 85 and 100 degrees give way to nighttime temperatures that are usually 40 to 50 degrees lower, the largest diurnal temperature swing of any California wine region. Those conditions extend the growing season, allowing grapes to ripen slowly, achieve excellent balance between sugars and acid.

1996 An AVA expansion of 52,600 acres includes many vineyards in the region’s western hills.
2010 Wine Spectator magazine rates Saxum Vineyard’s James Berry Vineyard 2007 the best wine in the world.
2016 Sunset magazine names Paso Robles the Best Wine Region in the West.
2013 11 sub-AVAs are approved for the Paso Robles AVA, which Wine Enthusiast magazine names its top wine region of the year.
2006 Rhône varietals, covering only 100 acres in Paso Robles, are expanded with 2,200 acres of new plantings.

The EDNA VALLEY AVA (3,000 acres of vineyards) is situated in an east-west-oriented valley just southeast of San Luis Obispo and bounded by the Santa Lucia Mountains to the west. It abuts the Arroyo Grande AVA (1,200 acres) along its southeastern edge. Grapes were first planted here by Spanish missionaries, but then row crops took over for many decades. The Edna Valley AVA was established in 1987 and Arroyo Grande in 1990. The two AVAs are often talked about as if they are one, with good reason. Both share features found in other California winegrowing regions — most notably a Mediterranean climate and the moderating influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean, which extends the growing season — Edna Valley has California’s longest growing season — allowing grapes to experience longer hang time, resulting in greater balance and complex flavors. Both AVAs are favorable to grapes that prefer the cool weather typical of the area, and the Burgundian varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate in both AVAs, with some of those grapes being made into sparkling wine. While a small and relatively young region, these two AVAs are home to some world-class wines. DININGANDDESTINATIONS.COM

A FAMOUS BREWING FAMILY PUTS DOWN ROOTS IN WINE COUNTRY
F
or Andy and Kim Busch, winemaking, like brewing, is a family affair focused on hospitality and, Kim says, “making friends, which is just as easy in the wine business as in the beer business.” It has been that way since 1861, when Andy’s great grandparents, Lilly Anheuser and Adolphus Busch, married during the formative years of what would become the world’s largest brewing company. Andy grew up in the family business and managed Grant’s Farm, the original Busch Gardens, located just outside of St. Louis. Today, he and Kim split their time between Santa Barbara and Folded Hills, located just over four miles from the Gaviota coast. They purchased the property in 2004, and eventually bought the adjacent Nojoqui Ranch. After a great deal of soil-testing, they planted their first Rhône varietals in 2014 and, two years later, released their first estate wine — a crisp, Provençal-style rosé. “We came to winemaking from a desire to preserve the land and add to the crops being grown,” says Kim. “We liked Pinot Noir, but our vineyards are the most coastal and southerly of any in Santa Barbara County. The land is too hot for Pinot Noir and too cold for Cabernet Sauvignon.” They eventually planted the Rhône varietals Syrah, Grenache, Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc and Marsanne, and have been working ever since with New Zealand–born winemaker Angela Osborne. Kim describes Angela as “an earth mama who could bring the heart we wanted” to producing wine in a style wholly tied to terroir. The grapes are often crushed by foot, the land is farmed 100-percent organically, and harvesting, bottling and releasing are done according to the biodynamic calendar. You can enjoy many Folded Hills small-production estate wines in the tasting room located in the property’s original farmhouse, which dates back to the early 1930s. Open daily from 11-5, the indoor-outdoor space has been renovated in rustic-chic style and invites guests, as Kim says, to “put up your boots; you can’t hurt anything.” In addition, Folded Hills opened the first and only tasting room in Montecito. Folded Hills is a lovely place to sip some wine, take in the incredible scenery, and enjoy a unique wine-country experience. That starts with “The Farmstead,” a farm shop open weekends from April through October. Visitors will find organic produce for sale from fifteen acres of row crops tended by renowned Santa Barbara organic farmer Tom Shepherd, as well as locally made baked goods, honeys and other good things. Kids will love feeding and petting the animals, among them a miniature jersey cow named Peaches, goats, donkeys, llamas and small Kunekune pigs. Children can also see where their food comes from while picking cherry tomatoes, strawberries, and other seasonal produce straight from field. Some Folded Hills wine names reflect the family’s heritage. For example, the Lilly rosé honors six generations of Busch women, while the reserve labels are adorned with sepia-toned images of ranch locations. Basically, Kim says, “We’ve merged our St. Louis heritage with ranch life.” Here, that also means keeping your eye out for a Clydesdale.

1. EPIC CENTER: The heart of Downtown SLO never misses a beat with its dynamic community, cultural, retail and restaurant offerings. The verdant, tree-lined streets are home to a variety of treasured local businesses - boutiques, galleries, cafes, museums, bars and hotels. Visit the historic San Luis Obispo Mission Plaza for a concert, take a stroll along the San Luis Obispo Creek for an urban wildlife sighting or simply shop and eat your way around this fabulous downtown. 2. GRAPE EXPECTATIONS: Whether you're a newbie out for a laidback day of casual tasting or the serious sip, swish and spit type, the world-class wine tasting experience in Paso Robles and SLO includes options for all. California's breathtaking Central Coast is home to more than 250 wineries - ranging from the intimate boutique to the big and burgeoning. So, be sure to set aside a little time for wine and start exploring. For more on wine country flip to page 54. 3. EAT YOUR VEGGIES AND MORE: Every Thursday evening, locals and visitors gather to eat, shop, and indulge in the bounty of the region at the Downtown SLO Farmers' Market. From 6:00-9:00, several blocks of downtown SLO (Higuera Street between Nipomo and Osos streets) are shut down and transformed into a culinary and cultural Nirvana. Explore more than 120 stalls, filled with offerings ranging from the fantastic and familiar - locally-grown produce, bread and authentic BBQ - to unique specialties from SLO area restaurants and artisans. Where else could you try kombucha, craft brew, seaweed and nitro-crafted ice cream all within the same block? Special events, activities and live entertainment top off this dynamic experience. For more info go to downtownslo.com 4. BACK TO SCHOOL: Established in 1901 California Polytechnic State University, also known as Cal Poly SLO, is a nationally-ranked public university located on the northern edge of San Luis Obispo. The main campus bustles with more than 21,000 students and covers 1,321 acres. Cal Poly's motto is "learn by doing" so if you want to know more about this esteemed institution, then take one of the student-led, 90-minute walking tours. calpoly.edu 5. TAKE A HIKE: Sought after summit and favorite locals hike Bishop Peak is the most prominent of the "Nine Sisters" or volcanic morros which stretch across San Luis Obispo and west into the Pacific Ocean. The climb to the top takes anywhere from one to two hours and handsomely rewards hikers with spectacular views of the city and surrounding peaks and valleys. Other popular hiking destinations that deliver spectacular views are Cerro San Luis and Morro View in Irish Hills Reserve. For directions and more info on these hikes and others head to hikespeak.com 6. ON A MISSION: Founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1772, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is a treat for history buffs, believers and anyone who appreciates the beauty of a bygone era. The current building, constructed in the typical mission style - from adobe, with porticoed arcades and topped with a red-tiled roof - dates back to 1793. The tours are free, and a daily mass is held. Stroll the grounds to see the museum, gift shop and courtyard gardens - a visual feast of fruit trees, cacti, old oaks, flowers and more. Relax on the grassy slope of Mission Plaza, which overlooks San Luis Obispo Creek - the perfect spot for a post-tour picnic. missionsanluisobispo.org 7. RAISE A PINT: Tap into SLO's abundant craft brew scene where more than a dozen local breweries concoct hundreds of innovative varieties. Take a break from swirling and sipping and blow a little foam off the top of a fresh cold one. From irresistible IPAs and creamy stouts to whimsical white ales and seasonal one-offs, the diverse selection of award-winning hoppy libations leaves satisfied even the most discriminating of palates. 8. SURF'S UP: Surfing is a way of life in California, as well as the official state sport. And just to be clear, SoCal doesn't have the corner market on all the sweet surf spots. Although SLO County's 100-mile stretch of pristine coastline may be short on pointbreaks, it's big on beach breaks. Typically, the best surf season here is fall, when surfers and SUPers can capitalize on west swells. Check out one of the many local surf shops for lessons, rentals and valuable advice for beginners. 9. ART APPRECIATION: For an impressive collection of contemporary works by California artists, look no further than San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. The museum's continually updated exhibits feature paintings, sculptures and photography, and the convenient downtown "cultural corridor" location and free admission make SLOMA a must-see. The museum offers docent-led tours as well as cell-phone app and downloadable MP3 audio tours. 1010 Broad Street. sloma.org 10. A STICKY SITUATION: For decades visitors and locals have adorned this narrow 70-foot long alleyway known as Bubblegum Alley. Located off Higuera Street between Broad and Garden streets, this rainbow-hued destination is bedecked with millions of pieces of previously-chewed bubblegum, making it a rather off-beat, Instagramworthy hotspot.

Land & Sea of Plenty
These Thai-inspired lettuce cups not only celebrate the fruits of the land and sea that we are blessed to have here on the Central Coast, but they also make for a fun and interactive dining experience. Guests will love creating and customizing their own cups around the table. The bold flavors and fresh elements in this dish make it the perfect casual meal to serve while enjoying a beautiful summer sunset. And almost every ingredient can be sourced locally at one of the weekly SLO County farmers markets.
PREPARATION Start by making the noodles, Marinated Sliced Cucumbers, Turmeric Sunflower Sauce, and preparing the additional garnishes. Finally, prep the ingredients for the Salt and Pepper Ridgeback Prawns. The prawns are the last step and should be served warm. INGREDIENTS Lettuce & Fillings • 1 head butter lettuce, washed and left in whole leaves • 1 package of dried glass noodles or rice vermicelli Cook the noodles per the instructions on the box. Rinse with cold water and toss with 1 tbsp. sesame oil to prevent the noodles from sticking together. Marinated Sliced Cucumber • 5 small Persian cucumbers or 1 large English cucumber • 1 handful of fresh mint leaves • 1 handful fresh cilantro • Juice of 1 lime • 1 tbsp. rice wine vinegar • 1 tbsp. coconut sugar or brown sugar • 1 tbsp. fish sauce Thinly slice the cucumber with a mandolin or knife. Chop the mint and cilantro and combine in a bowl with the sliced cucumbers. Add rice wine vinegar, lime juice, sugar, and fish sauce, mix, and let marinate while preparing the remaining recipe components. Tumeric Sunflower Sauce • 1 small knob of fresh turmeric • 1 small knob of fresh ginger • 2 garlic cloves, sliced thinly • ½ Fresno chile • ¼ cup of water • ¼ cup sunflower butter • Juice of 2 limes • ½ tsp. ground turmeric • 1 tsp. honey • 1 tsp. Sriracha • 1 tbsp. fish sauce • 1 tbsp. tahini
Salt & Pepper Ridgeback Prawns • 1 lb fresh prawns • ½ cup of corn starch • ¼ cup sunflower oil • 1 knob of fresh ginger, peeled • 2 cloves of garlic • ½ a Fresno chile • 1 tbsp. coarse salt • 1 tbsp. coarsely ground pepper • A squeeze of lime juice Source the freshest prawns available. Rinse and leave the heads and shells on. Toss in corn starch for a light coating. Discard excess corn starch. Thinly slice the ginger, garlic, and Fresno chile. Heat a heavy-bottomed pan with the sunflower oil. Add prawns to the hot sizzling oil and drop in the ginger, garlic, and chile. Toss in the pan for about 5-7 minutes until the prawns are pink and cooked through. Finish with coarse salt, coarsely ground pepper, and a squeeze of lime juice.
To assemble, use the butter lettuce leaves to contain the noodles and prawns. De-head and peel the prawns, adding 2 or 3 to each lettuce cup. Add some cucumbers, sauce, garnishes, roll them up, eat, and enjoy!

1 - EAT & DRINK: SIDECAR COCKTAIL CO. Happy hour at Sidecar is chef’s kiss delectable. You can’t go wrong with the menu, but The Cure (a tequila cocktail with lime, grapefruit, and rosemary shrub) and the Brussels sprouts are definitely fan favorites. 2 - DRIVE: PERFUMO CANYON Take the long way from town to Avila Beach, and you’ll end up winding through Perfumo Canyon. With panoramic vistas out to Morro Bay and a bird’s eye view above San Luis Obispo, it’s the perfect place to catch the sunset. 3 - DO: SURF My husband is a great surfer. I am great at sitting on the beach. But, if the conditions are perfect - hot and sunny, no wind, and tiny waves, I’ll paddle out too and catch some ankle-biters. If you don’t have your own board, there’s lots of area surf shops to hit up for a rental. 4 - HIKE: BISHOP’S PEAK Bishop’s Peak, known for hiking and climbing, really is a SLO classic. Some trails wind up to the top of the mountain and some loop around the base. You can see the top of Bishop’s Peak from almost everywhere in town, and it always
Northern California native who put down roots in San Luis Obispo 8 years ago and never wants to leave. So grateful to be in a place surrounded by so much natural beauty and feels like she’s on a forever vacation living in SLO.

Slings espresso alongside her husband at their downtown SLO coffee shop, Field Day, while constantly inspired by all the small businesses and business owners that make this town so special.
makes me smile. It’s also where Randy and I got married on a perfect Thursday, surrounded by 15 of our closest people. 5 - DRINK: FIELD DAY COFFEE Field Day is our little coffee shop! We started the business just over a year ago and can’t believe how it’s grown. Mostly, we love the way it puts us right in the middle of this community. Serving both SLO locals and the people just passing through is one of the greatest joys we know. 6 - VISIT: MONTAÑA DE ORO We are so lucky to have a state park in our backyard. Montaña de Oro, or MDO, is the perfect place to get outside. Full of beaches, trails, and campsites, the park is always inviting you to stay for an afternoon or the weekend.
