Chad’s Story In 1991, at the age of three, Chad Juros was diagnosed with leukemia. For 17 months Chad lived as an inpatient in the cancer ward of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. There, he fought the good fight, which included having to learn how to walk and talk again because of the devastating side effects of the drugs that were intended to cure him. While he was bravely fighting the battle, his father would use magic to distract Chad from the fear and pain he was enduring. While receiving his treatments, Chad would lie in his hospital bed and practice making magic for hours a day. Each week, his dad would teach him new tricks to master. In 1998, at long last, Chad was released from the hospital. That same year, Chad’s dad was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and died, leaving behind Penny, his wife, and his children, Faith and Chad. In January 2003, Chad began experiencing severe headaches. Doctors determined that Chad was bleeding from the brain.and he underwent emergency brain surgery. When Chad awoke from his surgery deficit free he decided to make his father’s dying wish his living wish. That wish was for “Chad to be considered cured and continue to spread the magic”. Spread the Magic, a nonprofit charitable foundation was formed and is dedicated to the memory and wishes of Chad’s dad, Dr. Donald Juros (1958-2000).

A Magical Princess Event to Benefit Spread the Magic Foundation
When local Magician, Chad Juros created his Foundation, SPREAD THE MAGIC for Pediatric Cancer Research, it was after he himself had battled the disease for years. Now he shares his story and promotes the message to fund the research that he hopes will eradicate childhood cancer in our lifetime. On April 7th, Little Angels Princess Events is hosting a Fundraiser for Chad’s Charity at the Mays Landing Country Club appropriately for children, specifically for little girls. The Princess Tea Party will include Breakfast, Chad’s Magic Show, Meet & Greet Fairy Tale Princesses-serenaded by local musician, Kelly LaVigna and Kid’s Zumba-lead by Fitness Instructor, Lynn Sooy. This ‘grown up’ event for Little Girls’ will give parents/grandparents and their daughters a chance to spend some ‘magical’ time together to celebrate the special moments of childhood. Atlantic County Charter Schools In Danger Charter schools are public schools that are publicly funded and privately run. They were founded to offer alternatives and innovation, so it’s no surprise that they’re one of the moststudied types of school (and school reform). Charter schools— just like any other — can perform exceptionally well, or can fail to meet standards. Many charter schools don’t actually look that different from traditional public schools, but they are often scrutinized and held to a higher standard. The promise of the possibility of charter schools outperforming traditional pubic schools was met with eager expectations. The community at large is now left to wonder if the promise was delivered or if the expectations were set to high. Maybe the studies were correct—research does show that, on average, charter schools don’t outperform traditional pubic school, they are often seen as an attempt to privatize education. In this environment of skepticism the recent popularity of charter schools is perhaps waning. The Board of Education bases charter school renewals on the following: academic performance, fiscal viability, and operational stability. In other words, unless a charter school can provide unwavering evidence that it has the capacity to improve student performance the school can be shut down. Recently, the New Jersey State Department of Education announced it will close charter schools in Jersey City, Atlantic City and Hammonton at the end of the academic year. The reasons stated were low test scores and problems with the schools’ leadership. Parents, students and teachers are shocked at the rather sudden decision. The Institute for Excellence Charter School in Hammonton had been open for four years and has received a tremendous amount of support from the families of students enrolled. They are currently petitioning the governor to repeal the decision. The Oceanside Charter School in Atlantic City had been open 14 years, however state officials claim there is “no evidence that the school is providing its students with a quality education or that it has the capacity to dramatically improve student achievement in the future.” For more information about the Save The Institute for Excellence Charter School in Winslow Township, NJ petition visit: www.change.org

Don’t throw out your leftover egg cartons -transform them into creative planters Re-purpose your recyclable paper egg cartons into wonderful crafts that will have your kids cracking up! By getting creative and having fun, you’ll set a great example of how to reuse and recycle items into ecofriendly objects. 1. After cracking and removing eggs, wash the eggshells and then boil them in a pot for three minutes to kill any bacteria. 2. Place each eggshell in a cardboard egg carton for support. 3. Fill 2/3 of each eggshell with potting soil. 4. Add a seed to the soil. Always follow the recommended seeding depth on your seed package, and be aware of the average germination time.

Sixteen years ago, the Jersey Shore Children’s Museum opened its’ doors in Egg Harbor Township to the delight of families from all corners...of .. South Jersey. What started out as an idea conceived by a local mom, Linda Szypula, with three little ones of her own, grew into reality with the help of her husband Jim and teacher friends, Chuck and Sue Gunther. Sue went on to become the museums’ Director-managing, marketing and overseeing the daily operations, and Linda’s dream of an interactive family
environment flourished. Children would come to know the museum as a favorite reward or to attend a special birthday event while parents could take comfort knowing they were in a safe, fun, secure location. Since 1997, many children’s attractions in the area have come and gone. An unstable economy has also tested the foundation of this mom and pop operation and amazingly it was one of the last ones still standing. Then in 2012 word came from the landlord at Shore Mall that their location

was slated for the wrecking ball. The end of the year would mark the end of an era… but not the end of the Jersey Shore Children’s Museum! What they didn’t anticipate was the response from older Parents, coming back to show their support for revitalization of this south jersey gem! Local mom, Mari Dattolo, who has children now in their twenties, couldn’t imagine the next generation not having the same opportunities her children were afforded. With that vision in mind, she spearheaded a grassroots campaign to SAVE THE JERSEY SHORE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM, mid December 2012. Christmas weekend saw the first Fundraiser, which initially brought the cause to the media’ attention. Mari then took to the streets to find the perfect new home and assemble a Board of Directors to include Marketing specialists, Educators, Artists, Retail Management and
Financial and Legal experts. Of the 25 Board Members and 5 Executive Board Members, 95% have older children and have realized the value and positive impact the museum has had on their development. Since the campaign started, Businesses have been coming forward to sponsor exhibits as well as families eager to hear any word on an Opening Date and NEW Location… All in Good time! As finishing touches are being made to secure a lease and a major naming sponsor, an announcement is anticipated by April 1st~ And so, for the young mom of three who dreamed of making a difference in the lives of families of the Jersey Shore, Linda- just recognized as “Teacher of the Year”-can proudly say she has accomplished her mission-yesterday, today and for many tomorrows to come!

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don’t solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.

how did We Get here? Thirty years ago, most people led lives that kept them at a healthy weight. Kids walked to and from school every day, ran around at recess, participated in gym class, and played for hours after school before dinner. Meals were home-cooked with reasonable portion sizes and there was always a vegetable on the plate. Eating fast food was rare and snacking between meals was an occasional treat. Today, children experience a very different lifestyle. Walks to and from school have been replaced by car and bus rides. Gym class and after-school sports have been cut; afternoons are now spent with TV, video games, and the internet. Now that’s the bad news. The good news is that by making just a few lifestyle changes, we can help our children lead healthier lives–and we already have the tools we need to do it. We just need the will.

Small steps the year I got P••ch• polio was written by Peg (•xp• •2/ Kahret. It is about a 12 year old girl who is diagnosed with all the types of polio: P Bulbar polio , Spinal polio , (• and Paralytic polio . Peg struggled for her life and to a way to conquer her disease. Being assisted by doctors, nursing staff, and her loving family. Peg’s temperature escalates, and is taken to the hospital; only to find out she has polio, the only case in her town of that year. Peg is immediately put into isolation, where she becomes paralyzed from the neck down, and cannot breathe properly so the put her in an oxygen tent. She develops not only one type of polio, not two, but three types. Peg Kehret tells what happens in Peg’s fight against polio. The author really makes you feel like you’re there. I think people of all ages looking for a good drama will really enjoy this book. It teaches you what happens when you’re willing to try anything to get things the way you want them. Small Steps shows real determination. This book takes you away from your world, and into Peg Shulze’s.
