Jersey Shore Family Summer Activity Guide 2014
publisher’s note Whether you’re a Jersey native or a shoobee who enjoy vacationing “Down the Shore” you’ll find Jersey Shore Family is your best resource to help you enjoy the best that the Jersey Shore has to offer. You will notice this year we changed things up a bit. In previous years we’ve run the popular “99 Things to do This Summer,” it became so popular with other publications we wanted to be different with the first ever 93 Days of Summer Board Game. Regular JSF fans may have noticed we put on a little weight! This issue is a whopping 36 pages and is jam packed with Summer camps, list of must do’s and more. We’re always thankful to our readers & advertisers for their support.

A Labor of Love by Carisa A. Stairs, Professional Birth Doula
Pregnancy is a time in a woman’s life filled with excitement, joy, and anticipation. Pregnancy may also bring confusion, self doubt, and bouts of anxiety; a woman may not know where to turn to help ease her worry. The answer for a lot of women is a doula. A doula provides physical, emotional, and planning support to a pregnant mother and her partner prior to, during, and after labor. As more and more expectant mothers are choosing to have doulas on their side, it is worth taking an in-depth look at what doulas bring to pregnancy and birth. It is often thought a doula’s service is only for a woman who is looking to have a natural, un-medicated birth; unfortunately this is a widely held misconception. A doula’s role is to help an expectant mother create the birth experience that she, the mother, desires. A doula accomplishes this by bringing her knowledge and experience together with the hopes, and desires of the expecting parents to develop a tailored birth plan, and then to advise and advocate for the parent’s fulfillment of their plan, throughout the birth process. A doula will work with the parents prior to the birth to educate them about the progression of labor, allowing them to have the information they need to make informed decisions. The description above should also alleviate a second misconception: the doula will replace the partner - this is not the case. Loving support to the mother in labor is a welcomed asset, and doulas rely on the strength and compassion of those close to the mother. A doula does not and cannot look to play the role of a loving partner or family member, but instead offers guidance to those in support of
30
the laboring mother. With a doula present the partner is able to participate more fully. The fears they may have had about the safety of their unborn baby and laboring mother are able to be put aside by having the knowledge and experience of a doula present. Her competence and calming influence allows the birth partner to give the mother the love and support that she needs. The presence of the doula will also alleviate the pressure of making unexpected decisions while a mother is in labor. During the emotionally charged time of birth, things may change, and quickly. A doula will serve as an advocate for the parent’s needs with the medical staff, encouraging the mother and partner to take their time when a decision needs to be made. What a doula cannot and should not do is make a decision for the parents. A doula uses her knowledge and experience to help gather all the information needed, discuss concerns, and suggest options so that the parents can make an informed decision. A professional birth doula brings together this knowledge and experience through training by an organization specialized in doula certification. One such organization is toLabor (formally ALACE). toLabor is unique among doula training organizations offering workshops that are educational, informative, and empowering, with a focus on physiological birth as well as the emotional, mental, physical, hormonal, and spiritual aspects of labor and delivery. Workshop participants leave wellequipped to start a birth doula business and to change the lives of their future clients by providing labor support and information on evidence-based practices and safe options for childbirth. The training is relevant not only to people who want a career as a doula,
Jersey Shore Family Summer Activity Guide 2014
but also for other professionals such as nurses, childbirth educators, massage therapists and anyone with an interest in birth. It is also relevant for women who want to be informed about choices in childbirth regardless of background or experience. This work carries into all aspects of one’s life and work; and for those who attend the training, they find that they walk away with a greater sense of their own awareness of how to be an active participant in their own life.
Carisa Stairs is a professional birth doula and mother of three small children. She has been working as a doula for just under three years. She believes fully in a woman’s strength! It is her passion to help a laboring woman tap into that strength and experience the wonder of the birth of her children. Deluxe Bubble Wand Kit By Arterro
We had a lot of fun making bubble wands with this pack. I think the level of fun you have with it really depends on how creative your family is. Based on their website, their goal is to make products that allow kids to be creative without telling them exactly what to do...which is kind of a creativity killer. This is not a paint-by-numbers activity, so if you want an activity that stretches the imagination, this is the project for your family! Especially at this discounted price!!!
Factiles By FACTILES Love this game/puzzle. FANTASTIC FOR CAR TRIPS! Our kids played with this for hours creating countless patterns and designs. The elementary school aged kids are actually learning about patterns in school and were surprized that they found a practical aplication for their studies. “Wow Mom... This pattern stuff is really FUN!” said 7 year old Maggie as we drove home from the grocery store. Fractiles is easy to pack up and you don’t have to worry about losing little pieces because they stick to the art board. YAY FRACTILES!
Millions of Colors Just In Time For Summer! Are you looking for something really special for your little princess. We found anamazing designer clothing brand, Millions of Colors. Find It Games
At the Beach and Kids Version The beach version of Find It was great for us, since we were heading on vacation to the beach. The kids had fun trying to find all the beach items from the sunglasses to the sailboat. Now when they play it, it reminds them of their trip to the beach. It’s a great game to play when traveling on long trips, which we do a lot of. It will definitely become a staple in our family car... And we might even get an extra for the office... it’s a great to pass time when your on hold!
