Jersey Shore Family Guide to

by sherrii brentari

“Mom, Mom... can we go Pokémon hunting now?” As I load my kids into the van in search of the elusive Pokémon and local Pokémon stops, I pause to evolve my first Eevee and then wonder how I’ve gotten so involved in the latest gaming fad. Kids, teens, and adults from every walk of life are wandering out in the real world with smartphones to play the game. If your child is one of the 7.6 million people who have downloaded the game you should probably study up. Some scary things have been related to Pokémon Go in the news. Reports of car crashes, tresspassing, accidents and even muggings have been connected to playing Pokémon Go, and it’s easy to be concerned about your kids wandering out at all hours to play this game.

What is Pokémon Go? In short, Pokémon Go is a new breed of video game called “augmented reality.” The game mixes real-world features with video elements. Pokémon “Trainers” walk around — looking at a virtual map on their smartphones that corresponds with the real world — to capture the magical, imaginary creatures known as Pokémon. Trainers “catch” the characters by virtually shooting “Poké Balls” at them. The game uses your phone’s GPS and clock to decide where and when different Pokémon will appear.

6

The excitement of the chase combined with the search for PokéStops and Pokémon Gyms can turn even the most mild mannered kid into a virtual reality junky.

Pokémon Pros Child-friendly. The game features the little creatures in various real-world locations and generally includes no real violence and nothing that is inappropriate for a child to see. Encourages active movement. It gets the child outside and moving around. Your child can’t sit on the couch and play until they pass out. Instead, it requires walking around and visiting different locations while looking at a map to identify where Pokémon might be lurking. Family Fun. It offers parents the opportunity to join in the fun and bond over the game as they hunt for Gyarados and Charmanders with their kids. Explore the neighborhood. The search for Pokemon hot spots take players to places they’ve never been before. We found a lot of churches are home to PokéStops and local Starbucks have more than their share of rare Pokémon.

J

Pokémon Cons Extreme data usage. The game eats up your phone’s data. If you do not have unlimited data in your phone plan, you could be in trouble. Potential unexpected expense. Although the game itself is free to download, Pokémon Go offers in-app purchases that range in price from 99 cents to $99.99. Players are encouraged to buy coins to purchase lures, incense, eggs and PokéBalls to help advance their games. Before play make sure to review your family’s app permissions.

Personal information. Watch out for your personal info. Nintendo asks that you register to use Pokémon Go, including email addresses and things like your child’s birth date. If you use Google or Facebook, remember, you are opening up your personal information – posts, emails – to Niantic, the game’s developer. The company requires you to notify them if you want collection of that material stopped.

Stranger danger. Players can interact with other players in their area as they visit PokéStops and gyms. Make sure your child understand boundaries and is aware of their surroundings at all times. Accidental breakage. Wondering around, phone in hand is an accident waiting to happen. Make sure you invest in a sturdy protective case to guard your child’s divice agains drops, spills and crashes. Distraction. Walking or riding a bike while looking down at a device can be dangerous. There have already been many reports of players getting injured by not watching where they are going. Warn your children to watch where they are going, especially when it comes to busy streets or high-altitude areas. Make sure to use the Vibration option, which alerts players to the presence of nearby Pokémon. The kids won’t miss anything in the game, but they’ll be less likely to wander into the street.

reviews FOR AGES 4-8

Bella Up, Up and Away by Ryan O’Rourke (Harper Collins 2016, $17.95) Another fanciful picture book about Bella the curious cat who lives in a lighthouse. The author/ illustrator, Ryan O’Rourke is a professor of illustration at the New Hampshire Institute of Art, and the pictures are made up of mixed media and digital compositions. They are inspired by the author’s summer vacations on Cape Cod. Bella, the cat was first introduced to us in her adventure titled Bella Lost and Found. She is back in Bella Up, Up and Away. When she meets a cat friend, Claude, she invites him to join her in an adventure. Wisely, he chooses to remain on shore taking a nap on a life raft while Bella plays in the ocean’s edge, and then creates a sand castle imagining she is a knight defending her kingdom. When a strong wind blows the life raft Claude is sleeping on out to sea, Bella has a real life adventure trying to rescue Claude. She sees the seagulls flying and thinks she will reach him by flying with a kite she finds in the sand. Alas, she loses her grip on the kite and ends up in the ocean with Claude. Nervously, they watch as a scary fin appears near them, but it turns out to be a friendly dolphin who tows them back to shore. Claude and Bella celebrate their new friendship and their rescue by sharing a meal in Bella’s lighthouse home. This book is a sweet tale of friendship, although I would have liked to see a way to include the hero dolphin in the celebration. —Reviewed by Mary Beth Fine, Atlantic County Library System/Brigantine

n

Yoon’s writing style is easy to get lost in, and graphics that show how Madeline passes the time litter the novel and are a unique draw that was a great addition. While the romance could have seemed very cliché since Maddy doesn’t have many opportunities to experience contact with other people, the gradual way Olly worms into her world was very believable, and his personality is infectious. Maddy’s conflict of if she was living trapped inside of her safe bubble as opposed to living in the world outside and experiencing life as she always dreamed of is riveting and heartbreaking. I couldn’t stop turning the pages to find out if Maddy could possibly have a happily ever after with the world so against her. Everything, Everything is a beautiful novel that really lets us know that “life is a gift. Don’t forget to live it.”
