The holidays are a popular time to bring home a furry new friend. Finding a cute little puppy under the tree is the dream of many hopefully kiddies, and for homeless animals in shelters and foster homes, getting a real home is the best gift ever. Think before you act. Adopting an animal as a serious commitment, so if the holiday spirit is moving you to adopt a pet for yourself or someone else, carefully consider whether the timing is right. In some households, time off from work or school during the holidays can give the new owner Angel is a nice, one year old Lab mix. She is a and pet the chance to bond and sweetheart that gets along well with other dogs and establish a routine. On the other hand, loves people. Angel is waiting to meet her forever family the holidays can be hectic, making the at the Cumberland County SPCA and Animal Shelter in adjustment difficult for pet and owner Vineland. 856-691-1500. alike. So before you head to the animal shelter, consider these important points. Don’t make a choice for someone else. Surprises are wonderful, but never surprise a person with a pet. Get the recipient’s okay, and then take the recipient to the shelter where the person and pet can choose each other. If the animal will live with you, include other members of the household in selecting the animal. Wait until things settle down. If you plan to have houseguests or entertain during the holidays, wait to bring home the pet until the holiday hubbub has passed. Commotion is over-stimulating — and sometimes terrifying — to an animal unused to its surroundings. And waiting until you have more time to devote to your new pet will make it easier to enjoy the new addition to your family.

All I want for Christmas is... by Sherrii Brentari
Every year my son asks me, “Mom, what do you REALLY want for Christmas? He asks this because he’s certain I never get what I really want. And, he’s sort of right. Now, don’t get me wrong. I get all kinds of amazing presents from my family. They know me well, and over the years I received countless books, games, puzzles, and art supplies. All of my very favorite things! I can count on gift certificates to my favorite stores and restaurants and even movie tickets. But I almost never get to use them. The books collect dust on the shelves. The puzzles and games never come out of the boxes. Often the gift certificates expire before I get to use them, and the last movie I’ve seen in a theatre was Pulp Fiction. This year, when my son asked what I REALLY wanted I didn’t hesitate. I knew exactly what I wanted. The perfect gift. Exactly what I need most in my life.... MORE TIME. I’m not alone, almost everyone I know needs more time. It’s a universal problem and MORE TIME would be the best gift ever. If you could order it on line, or stand in line to buy it holiday shopping would be a breeze. Although you can’t just run to the mall and pick it up, you can give the gift of time in a lot of ways. Just think about all of the chores that suck up time and find a way to remove some of the things on your loved one’s daily to-do list. Cleaning and cooking are the biggest time suckers in my life. Can you imagine how much extra time you would have if you didn’t have to clean your house or cook dinner every night? Most people I know can’t afford to eat out every night or hire a full time maid, but there are affordable options to consider. A gift certificate to a cleaning service is an ideal gift for almost anyone. It’s practical, one-size-fits-all, and it can make a huge difference in the quality of every day life. For busy families with children, and especially new moms, and even grandparents, the gift of a clean home is priceless. For the cost of dinner for two at a nice restaurant and a movie, you can purchase a gift certificate for a basic package and introduce your loved one to the concept of getting help with their house cleaning. There are many reputable companies that offer a variety of services that can make any home sparkle. It’s important to check references, especially when purchasing a gift for a friend or relative. A close friend of mine recommended Shore Naturals, a cleaning
service located in Egg Harbor Township, in part because they use only natural and environmentally conscious products and equipment. After meeting with Sandy Bollo, owner of Shore Naturals, I realized what an impact this gift was going to make on my entire family and I wondered why I didn’t ask Santa for this gift years ago. “I understand how much cleaning is important to live a healthy and happy life, says Sandy. She stressed the importance of customer service and keeping her employees properly trained and happy. Any hesitations I had about allowing a stranger into my house to touch “my stuff were gone 5 minutes after she walked into my messy kitchen and explained the process of uncluttering my life. You don’t even have to straighten up before they come. “We are your helping hand and we believe that you should not stress to be ready for your cleaning day, says Sandy. Shore Naturals offers gift certificates starting at $25 which can be applied to any cleaning service. They are available for purchase on line at www. shorenaturals. com. For more information call Sandy at 609-7981420. Now... what’s for dinner? Of course, there’s always the option of take-out food. But my family has had it’s fill of fast food and my children think McNuggets are a food group, so I personally am not too excited about food prepared outside of my home. The solution? A personal chef service. Yeah, I know, sounds really expensive right? Again, there are a lot of excellent chefs in the area that offer the service and I’m sure they have varying price points, so this gift might take a little research. I got lucky. One of my close friends recommended
I meet with Chef Amanda Nahas, owner of Whip It Out—an In-Home Personal Chef Service that offers customized packages and special-needs and medical diets. Amanda has a background in nutrition and she’s an amazing chef. She actually comes to your house, does an in-depth assessment of your food preferences and needs and then creates custom menus just for your family. Now here’s the really great part — once you decide on a package and choose your meals, she comes to your house on the pre-arranged “cook-date with all of the groceries, cooks for a few hours, and then packs up the meals in carefully labeled containers she provides. And then she cleans everything up and leaves! You are left with a wonderful aroma, a fully stocked fridge, and all of your meals to enjoy at your convenience. Just go to the freezer, Whip Out one of Amanda’s pre-cooked gourmet meals, and dinner is only minutes away! How cool is that? Whip It Out offers gift certificates starting at $50 which can be applied to any service. For more information call Amanda at 609-992-5251 or visit www.WhipItOut.net I can’t really think of anything that could make me happier than having a freezer full of good, healthy, home cooked meals... except for maybe having time to actually sit down at a clean table, in a clean kitchen and eat those meals with my family. Now that is my version of heaven. If you have any questions or would like to share your “Gift of Time ideas shoot me an email at sbrentari@ atlanticshorenews.com.

Impressions by Nance Piazza
Holiday Happiness
Sitting around the kitchen table with my sisters and brother, some of their kids, and a couple of my own, my brother breaks into antics from the past.. Our laughter resonates throughout the house, just as it did so many years ago when we all lived together. I look around the table to see the wide-eyes of the next generation observing us, their own parents, in a whole new light. We are real people, and we were kids, too. I am instantly transported back to my childhood with every passing story my siblings tell. Hearing the familiar unity of laughter coming from their now grown children, my parents wander onto the room to join us. Sitting there, slouched in my chair, my arms and ankles comfortably crossed, I am reminded that here, amongst my own, I am loved for exactly who I am, and these people have got my number. They know all about me. Some may not like that but, to me, it’s the best feel-good part of the Christmas holidays. As my father shares a story from the past with us, I can’t help but study the listening faces. All now grown-up/grown old and different, yet-- sitting with them together as a family-- they are very much the same as always. Christmas time stops time, just for a day— at least for me it does. Long enough for me to remember where I come from. The shopping, the running around, the stress that holidays seem to bring out for some people isn’t for me. If I take my kids to the Mall, we wander around the stores pointing things out that usually make us laugh, buying what we need if we see it, not worrying about if we don’t. Then the kids get a cinnamon bun and hot chocolate, I double palm a piping hot coffee, and we relax in the food court. After that, we wander around some more. No hustling, no bustling. My kids would rather have fun, walk-around time with mom, than be told we have to hurry up here and hurry up there. Not cool. When I think about the best parts of the holidays, the things that come to mind are hanging out with family, all the different desserts and foods readily available, and unscheduled, unrushed shopping with my kids.. The Christmas decorations, ugh....they are dust collectors.... but the Christmas lights are really nice. If you want to do something that will calm your nerves this holiday season, grab a kid or two, and go get a peppermint hot chocolate and a pumpkin pie Latte at Larry’s Restaurant Café on Main Road in Vineland. Drive down Landis Avenue, under the canopy of Christmas lights, all the way to the end. It’s absolutely beautiful and good for the soul. Life: It’s the longest thing you’ll ever do, so why rush it. Happy Holidays Everybody Get out there and live. It’s so worth it! The Middletons, owners and operators of Larry’s II Restaurant and Cafe on Main Road in Vineland got a visit from Santa December 4th, with their traditional Breakfast with Santa Buffet. Pictured from Left to right are: back row Nicole and Bob Middleton III ;Denise and Bob Middleton; Ryan and Melissa Middleton Jimmy, Aiden,--Santa-- Gracie, and in her mothers arms, Nora.

“Wow, this place looks a lot different,” notes a pleasantly surprised shopper who wandered into Wrap It Up, a gift store located in Central Square, Linwood. She notes the expansive selection of greeting cards still lines the walls of the quaint shop, but suddenly she notices that the selection of items on the shelves has morphed into a carefully selected menagerie of endless gifting possibilities. “We really want to offer a unique blend of products, something different than other stores in the area.” says Somers Point resident Gail Rosenthal, who recently purchased the store with her husband Bob. “We’re having a lot of fun, but it’s hard work,” says Gail. “I love the new Chantilly Lane Musicals. They are plush animals that play music and talk to each other— you have to see them to appreciate it, they’re really cute.” It’s obvious that Gail has an eye for fun gifts and quality items by the vast selection of distinctly stylish options now lining the shelves. In addition to a varied selection of the popular Lampe Berger Lamps and oils, you’ll find everything from china tea sets and designer hand bags to that special something for the man in your life.

Food for Thought by Jean Hecker
A Treat for All Seasons Every year, while Linda and I were in Sacred Heart Grade School, on a Saturday at the beginning of the Christmas holidays, my mom would pile us into the old Navy Blue Chrysler Imperial and off we would go to Hammonton, NJ. Here we would make 2 stops: one at Tomasello Winery and the other at the Deerpark Wholesale Cookie Factory to buy holiday treats for our teachers, the Sisters of St. Joseph. I would marvel at the huge jugs of wine and beautiful tins of cookies mom picked out and knew that the next stop would be the convent to drop off the seasonal “wine and cookies”. The convent was a very exclusive enclave, not open to all. I was always awed by the silence and sense of peace that permeated the sparse, lovely rooms and small chapel. We would talk in whispers, waiting with great anticipation for Mother Superior to arrive to greet us. We did this every year that I can remember, and my mom and dad were really kind to them. Another year. my parents bought them their first great big television set for the living room. They also replaced all of the painted metal outdoor furniture at the convent with new stuff, because the metal made white marks on their black clothing. I was always proud to know that my mom and
Jean’s Midnight Snack Ingredients:
• As much Nutella as you want. • As much Marshmallow Fluff as you want • “Carr’s Whole Wheat Crackers” —which really are like a cookie (they are in the cracker aisle at most stores or Graham Crackers work well too)
• Glass of non-fat milk
Take the cracker, plop on all the Nutella it will hold, then plop on top all the marshmallow fluff you want. Eat with as much gusto as you can muster and wash it down with an 8 ounce glass of milk. Simply the best! Can also be made with the cracker, Marshmallow Fluff and sliced banana for a mock Banana Creme Pie also fabulous!
dad were generous people. Sometimes, I wondered if all of that stuff was just a bribe to keep me and Linda in good standing with the nuns. When I was in third grade, Sister Margaret Dorothy felt obligated to tell my mom at a parentteacher meeting that “Jeanie does what Jeanie wants to do!”.... (Whatever that meant!) To my great embarrassment, I had to hear that phrase repeated over and over for about the next 20 years of my life! Anyway, my mom and dad were not rich. We were just a typical, middle -class family, sometimes struggling to make it through, but Linda and I were never aware of that. We felt rich in love and warmth all year round. We never knew that mom had to juggle a family budget, way back then, sometimes on only a $100 a week! This is the season to count our blessings, whether they be past or present, or even in hopeful anticipation of the future. Have a Happy Holiday and Healthy New Year...here is my favourite little treat, one that I can make for myself anytime without any fuss...and it uses one of the healthiest treats around - Nutella!

2010 Top Gifts Zipfy Mini Luge
Family Favorite We LOVE the Zipfy Mini Luge. It’s fast, easy to manuver, lightweight, and easy to store. The best thing? Almost anyone can ride it! It’s recommended for Ages 5 and up, but even our 3 year olds were able to hang on and swoop down tiny hills. It’s weight capacity is reported to be 250lbs, and it is strong enough to hold the weight, but our older kids had a tough time fitting on the pint sized seat. The price is right, we suggest getting one for every child, our kids got impatient waiting for their turn.

Big Kids’ Pick The Shred Sled takes a bit to get used to, especially if you’re not already a practiced skater. The older kids loved the look and feel, very flashy, lots of embelishments. Unlike a standard skate board, the Shred Sled is not stable when it’s at rest, much like a bike, but that’s part of its appeal. Overall, a great gift for any active tween, teen, or kid at heart who has the need for speed and isn’t afraid of trying something new.

Editor’s Favorite Really, really unique. We’ve never seen a toy so easily understood by children of all ages. Kimochi character boxes come in a variety of designs (Cloud, Cat, Hugtopus, Lovey Dove, Bug) along with little “Feeling” pillows with emotions on one side and a graphic faces matching the emotion on the other side. Infants loved the soft cuddly characters and toddlers like taking the feeling pillows in and out of the characters. Our 2 and 3 year old “product testers” picked up on the concept immediately taking turns mimicing the feelings and instantly began roll playing situations to match the Kimochi emotions. Best toy on the market for teaching children to express and understand emotions. Amazing.

Available at most stores where toys are sold and www.BuyAquaSand.com
Pop on pals amusement park play set was a hit with our toddler
testers and parents alike. We like the entire concept of the Pop on Pals line, easy to play with figures that children can transform themselves with minimal help. The bright colors and varied activities of this set kept the kiddies entertained while the sounds were engaging without being too loud.
you can imagine. It’s the king of the cash register toys. Our kids loved using the scanner and the credit card swiper. Our girls were delighted that the microphone actually works. “Price check!” This toy takes role play to a whole new level.
chop balance bike a quality toy that needs no bells and whistles.
by Summit Toys

an equally soft blanket that neatly tucks into the friendly, animal shaped pillow. The pets are really detailed and unlike anything we’ve seen before. The selection is unique and unusual pets are grouped into several collections including: Safari Collection, Zoo Collection, Bug Collection, Wildlife Collection, Baby Collection, and Storytime Collection, The quality impressed us the most, and the whole package is machine washable. Great for sleep overs, road trips, or nap-time at daycare.
zillionz talking cash register truly has all the bells and whistles
Zillionz Talking Cash Register It talks… it counts… it’s the Talking Cash Register – a great learning tool for learning about money and math. Available in steel/blue and pink/ lavender. Ages 4 & Up — $39.99
Zoobies are very similar to the popular Pillow Pet, except they also come with
up to take turns tossing monkeys, bananas, and coconuts at the targets. The game is so cute it can be used as a decoration in your child’s room. A very quality product, there were no issues with the target staying in place even during rougher play. Our 3 year old product tester couldn’t stop “feeding” the monkey.
Three-In-One Doorway Target Game Adorably
detailed doorway target can hang around as a cute decoration or be used for endless game play.
Bright colors and cute characters instantly hold a babies attention. Pieces are large with no little pieces to worry about and very easy for chubby hands to hold. Our kids found an endless array of things to do with the shaker eggs. The whole set is very well packaged and everything stores inside the drum which doubles as a carrying case. The Parum Pum Pum makes a really great gift and the packaging is so colorful and clever you don’t even need to worry about wrapping paper... it even comes with a gift card already inside and a cute little book.

HEXBUG Nano Habitat Set
The HEXBUG Nano Habitat Set includes 2 extremely rare Nanos and everything you need to build your habitat. Configure the pieces any way you like, then turn your Nanos loose to play. Real fun with real science. — $29.99
Available at most stores where toys are sold and www.Target.com
Remarkably simple, this very sturdy well-made balance bike comes only partially assembled, but we had it together in just a few minutes. The solid wood design makes this model stand far apart from the rest. We found it the perfect size and weight for our 2 and 3 year olds. There was no hesitation by the kids, they all hopped right on. Without having to worry about the pedals, kids were able to concentrate on balance and had a great time just scooting around.
Aqua Sand Polar Playground is really cool. Many of our parent
product testers had as much fun as the kids. The sand really does stay dry, our more scientific minded kids did many experiments to find out why. The verdict? It’s magic. Be prepared to buy refill sand. You can use the sand more than once, but it’s difficult to keep the colors divided after use and it’s impossible to gather it all back up again. A little messy, but we didn’t notice any stains, so it’s a relatively “clean” mess to clean up. It’s a great activity for a rainy or snowy day, kept our kids busy for hours.
Hexbug nano habitat set is all about the science. Our kids never had
so much fun with “bugs.” Although the habitat set was great, watching the cat chase the nanos was definitely more entertaining. Overall, a really cool toy for kids of all ages. Of course because of the small parts it’s not recommended for small children but our toddlers loved just watching the little guys scatter around much like real “bugs.”

You and Yours Peace, Joy, Hope, and Happiness this Holiday Season
Very cool. We’re not sure if this should be on the kids’ wish lists or the Dads’. A little on the delicate side, definitely not for younger kids. Fairly easy to manuever, and the video quality is surprisingly clear.
GLIDE™ by ZABAZOO Take aim and carefully push the handmade GLIDE stones across the supersonically slippery board to land in the target. With a 4 foot long board, only the most skilled will have the aim to knock an opponent out! — $29.95 Easy enough to play for almost any age. Our tweens and teens had a blast. A great game for parties. You can play with up to 4 players or break into teams. It brings out the competitor in everyone, so watch out. We liked how easy it was to fold up and put away. Kept the entire family entertained all night. Available at most stores where toys are sold — $14.99 www.amazon.com

Video Games
Megamind by THQ
Based on the upcoming film from DreamWorks Animation, this new video game series features unique gameplay for each video game system and allows players to battle villains with inventive mega-gadgets and super abilities. SRP: $39.99 (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)/$29.99 (DS)/$19.99 (PSP) Available at www.thq.com This one is for the little guys. Easy to play and understand. A little too easy for the older kids, our 8 year old became bored quickly, but it was simple enough for the 4 year old to join in the action. We were a little disappointed it wasn’t more like the movie, even the voices were different.
The Biggest Loser by THQ
One of the most popular interactive health and fitness video games. Players who are looking to lose a little weight, a lot of weight or maintain their current physique, will now be able to kick their workout routine up a notch and push themselves to the next level. SRP: $39.99/$49.99 Available at www.thq.com Mom’s Favorite! We like that you can work out with either Bob or Jillian. It’s not as challenging as being on the show, but it definitely gives you a work out. More affordable than many other fitness games. We love it!
Battlefield Bad Company 2 Ultimate Edition by Electronic Arts
All-out-warfare multiplayer. Experience the signature Battlefield multiplayer across a variety of huge open maps, each with a different tactical and gameplay focus and set across many different environments SRP: $39.99/$$29.99 Available at www.amazon.com A lot of game for the price. We liked the maps and the vehicle selection is cool. Our favorite thing? The interactive terrain engine. Better than Call of Duty.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit by Electronic Arts
Play as either cops and racers in both a tremendously deep, fully-defined single player career and a groundbreaking multiplayer experience across all race modes. Autolog system connects friends directly to each other’s games, SRP: $39.99 Available at www.amazon.com Awesome graphics, very cool online multiplayer with huge community of racers. Our kids couldn’t wait to get online with their friends. Parents like this game because it has much less violence than many of the other popular games.

With the Wand in your hand, you’ll have total control of all your Wii software as well as a rubberized B-Trigger, larger 1 and 2 buttons and an improved and re-worked d-pad for more comfortable and accurate classic and horizontal game play. For more information visit www.nyko.com –$39.99 Available at www.nyko.com AMAZING. We loved it. Anyone who plays the Wii often knows how frustrating it can be when the game doesn’t respond directly to the controller. The Wand+ allowed our testers to play in a wider playing field with greater distance from the sensors and the response to movement rate was impressive. If your family likes the Wii you’ll need to get more than one Wand+. Our testers quickly began to argue over who’s turn it was.

The extraordinary new, exclusive building and design toy! Qubits are based on the strongest shape in nature, the triangle. The flexible, rubber-like pieces can be bent into an endless array of shapes and geometric structures. This 160 piece set includes an Activity Guide and is packed in a handy storage box. Ages 7 + —$60.00 Available at www.amazon.com Anyone who enjoys puzzles or building toys won’t be able to stop building. The older kids (and parents) had tons of fun trying to recreate the sample designs. The little guys just had fun snapping the pieces together into patterns and really, really long “snakes.” The set comes with so many pieces several players can create at the same time without having to worry too much about “sharing” special pieces.
Yamodo Party Time and Yamodo Good to Go Yamodo Party Time is a family based game that welcomes an unlimited number of players at almost any age. Write a funny definition, add a quick doodle, and feel free to lobby the judge on why your definition is best.—$24.95 Yamodo Good to Go are great stocking stuffers and really encourage creativity. Kids and adults will stay entertained for hours creating drawings and definitions for this inspired collection of made-up words.— $16.99 Available at Barnes & Noble, Toys R US, and www.Yamodo.com Sort of like a cross between Pictionary and Mad Libs. Older kids like the Good to Go versions for their back-packs. Even our parent testers who aren’t normally big fans of board games liked Yamodo Party.

Washington Report by Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02)
Remaining Hopeful During the Holidays Typically, this time of the year finds us focused on holiday festivities and family celebrations. However, 2010 has been a very challenging year for many South Jersey residents and countless Americans, thus making it difficult to fully embrace the spirit of the season. As we all know, the economic outlook continues to be shaky at best while unemployment remains unacceptably high. Small businesses, restricted from available credit, are struggling to keep their doors open and employees working. And personal savings are increasingly strained. It is an understandably difficult time for some residents to feel joyous. There is reason, though, to remain hopeful. On January 5th, the 112th Congress will be sworn in, bringing to Washington critical checks and balances to reduce spending and bring down the deficit, thus creating an environment to promote economic growth and create jobs. Long gone will be the senseless partisan distractions, new expansive government programs and budget-busting priorities of the last two years which have left our nation financially weaker and millions of Americans looking for work. Pro-growth policies and commonsense business solutions, such as repealing the 1099 reporting requirement established under the new health care law for small businesses, will be put forward to lead the country out of its economic recession. The new tone and renewed focus will help instill certainty to business owners and entrepreneurs while creating confidence in consumers and the markets. Certainty and confidence are exactly what our employers’ need before additional capital investments and hiring can begin. Closer to home, it is important for each of us to put our families, friends and neighbors front and center this holiday season, remembering the strength and support of those around us. It is in these challenging times that we must rely on each other; focus on the values and quality interactions that can be found at the dinner table or in the living room; and look to the simpler, inexpensive activities to bring the holiday spirit into our homes. It is also the time to remember to give what we can – money, food, clothing, blood, or time – to charitable organizations across South Jersey. At any given time, the need for charity far exceeds what is readily available; in past year, the need has multiplied. Thus, with the holidays in full swing, let us focus on the true meaning of the season and do our part to embrace the spirit of the season. We should be mindful of those who are currently struggling and those less fortunate even in better economic times. We should take time to remember those who make our communities better and those who seek to make the world safer, in particular, our dedicated servicemen and women who are away from their homes this holiday season. We have experienced many challenging times as a nation before as we continue to now, but history has repeatedly proven that we find a way forward. Let us use this time to look towards 2011 and the changes ahead with a renewed sense of optimism and hope.

The Local View by Mayor Chuck Chiarello
The Holiday Season in Trenton It’s that time of year when the world falls in love… so the old song goes. It seems that, in recent weeks, the ideas have been flowing and the tone between the legislature and the governor is starting to stabilize! The governor has been showing his “countdown calendar” around the state, saying how many days are left to the start of the new 2% budget cap in January. Work has actually been getting done -- sometimes behind closed doors -- to help municipalities keep their heads above water in the new year. Just a few short weeks ago, many of the Governor’s “tool box” items to help save municipalities seemed a million miles away. Since December, a reasonable compromise has been reached on Arbitration Reform. “Arbitration” has single handily been identified as the number one cause for increased budgets throughout New Jersey. This has to do with labor contracts, which many times far exceed the new 2% budget cap. COAH, which is the Council on Affordable Housing, has long been a thorn in the sides of municipal officials. Finally, there is movement on COAH in the Assembly that will realistically ease some of the financial demands that municipalities face in providing low and moderate priced housing. At the time of this article, the hopes were good for COAH reform legislation making it through the process -- which means the Assembly, the Senate, and the Governor’s signature. Civil Service Reform is still another stumbling block. Efforts are being made to make this form of job security more flexible in today’s realities of ever-tightening budgets. The main issue is for towns to be able to opt-out of the Civil Service system and the outdated rules that have prevented towns from taking cost saving measures in consolidating departments or merging with other communities. Everyone is still not in agreement on this “tool box” item. While the holiday season has brought some action in Trenton, I am sure that there will be many more battles to fight in the months to come. The full assembly and senate are up for reelection in 2011. It will be difficult enough for municipal officials to keep their towns afloat with the new 2% budget cap and, at the same time, run for cover with the flying rhetoric that will come with the election season. Most people don’t understand what the 2% budget cap means for a municipality. Simply put, every increase in expenses -- whether for healthcare, pension, salaries and wages, utilities, fuel costs, insurance, and more-- must not exceed 2% in total. As an example, a one million dollar budget could only increase by $20,000 (in total) based on the expenses that I just mentioned. Insurance has increased by 8% this year, healthcare up 12% and we won’t even mention gas prices—so, the task is daunting. As we enter a new year, I send best wishes to municipal officials everywhere. It will be the most challenging and difficult budget process they have ever faced. If it doesn’t fall under the 2% budget cap, cuts will have to be made which may lead to more layoffs and even the elimination of services. You can already hear the ideas being kicked around to raise new revenues for towns to stay afloat--trash fees, recreation fees and more. Welcome to the New Year---things will never be the same.

Gift Giving: It’s the Thanks that Counts
CLASSIFIEDS HOMES FOR SALE • RENTALS • HELP WANTED
During this season, most people shift into another gear and increase activities that might not end until sometime around the first of the coming year. By that time, some people are close to a nervous breakdown or they are operating in a zone where nothing can touch them. But this article is about an activity that is the theme that permeates the whole Christmas season----gift buying and gift giving. But this is not even about that; this is about “gift receiving.” We hear a lot about giving gifts to our friends and loved ones, but very little is written or said about the protocol of how to receive a gift. Knowing how to receive a gift is just as important as giving a gift. Is there a problem in that area, you ask? Yes, there is. We can all relate to at least one experience where we felt disheartened because of a negative reaction to a gift we gave someone. Some people have no clue about being gracious when receiving a gift or how a negative reaction can jeopardize a friendship or relationship with a family member. Let’s presume that we give gifts out of the kindness of our hearts to people we either admire, love, like, appreciate or respect. That being the case, we can safely say that the gift is meant to convey a message of, “I care about you, and you are special to me.” However, during the process of receiving gifts, some gift recipients usually make two avoidable but common mistakes. Both can cause hurt feelings and sometimes loss of a friend. Mistake #1: Verbal or non-verbal disappointment. Frowning and other facial gestures showing dislike for the gift or complaining about the gift all in front of the giver. Receiving a gift you do not like or want must be followed by a smile and a “Thank you, I appreciate you thinking about me.” That is not a fib; it is called tact, diplomacy and courtesy. Mistake#2: Making light of a ,gift because it is not as expensive as you would prefer is awful manners (this does apply to husbands who are using the gift as a coming out of the dog house offering as these gifts should be as expensive as she deems necessary). Unless you are a hopeless snob a ten-dollar pair of gloves, given with love, should be received with the same joy and appreciation as if they were more expensive. After all, it is the thought that counts. And on a very different level, receiving any gifts from children should ascend to the highest level of praise, joy, thankfulness and appreciation with lots of hugs and kisses. So, when receiving gifts, be mindful of how you react in the presence of the gift giver. Even a moment’s show of dissatisfaction or negativity can damage a relationship for a long time. During this Christmas season, buy, give and receive gifts as a backdrop to the main reason for Christmas. So for all that wish to receive it, “Merry Christmas.”

What had happened was... Happy Holidays. This time of year draws up old memories right? Well grab your cocoa and sit back for a yarn from yesteryear. My youth was full of comic books, YooHoos and a lot of Twinkies ( a collective gasp was heard by all…). I would make my own super hero fortresses. I’d pretend that my Spider-Man action figure really shot webs and would target my demon of a little brother. We played cops & robbers and cowboys & Indians ( before they got the Native American upgrade from Microsoft ). It was Post-Norman Rockwell All American suburbia at its best. Those were good times. I’ll always remember pretty much to the minute when I knew there was NO Santa Claus! To me, it felt like the end of something. I knew things would never be the same and the world was just not that magical. It was a grey day. My Marvel Comics Nerd Posse and I were goofing around on a cleared lot where a new house was to be built. We climbed on piles of downed trees waiting to be cut-up. They were mountainous to a 9 yr old mind you. We all discussed the validity of Santa Claus. We discussed how there was no way that fruity little elves could build TYCO Race Tracks with glue, wood, a handsaw and a ball-peen hamme, while singing carols & dancing a jig!! We laughed our pre-pubescent asses off. But when the laughter stopped , I felt real cold inside. What else wasn’t real? I can take myself right back to that moment anytime I think of it. It brings with it some mixed emotions. The crisp air. The cold breeze chills me still. My cold runny nose. The ends of my sleeves on my jacket crusted with Twinkie & YooHoo residue. ( kind of like a dim witted Aqualung… ) I didn’t want IT to ever change! That in itself was a challenge to grasp. Why was IT ever there at all if IT wasn’t ever real? It wasn’t fair. We didn’t asked to be lied to. As we moved on, it didn’t stop gnawing at us. We were made to feel like we were idiots for buying this sleigh full of crap. But then again, we’ll buy anything wont we, as long as someone’s selling… My 5th Annual Toys For Tots Benefit Comedy Show will be held Friday night , December 17th , 8pm - 10pm at The Riverside Inn. 5397 Somers Point Mays Landing Rd , Mays Landing. Marines will be in attendance accepting UnWrapped Gifts for Boys and Girls. Admission is FREE. Call 609-476-0266 for Info Stick around after the comedy show because its also The Riversides Christmas Party Rock N Roll Bash with The xXx Band from 10pm - 2am rockin the house!!
